    Coach Heffernan-

Ka’a’awa boy here. Glad to see you doing so well with our UH athletes.

What are your goals for the UH Football team in terms of strength and conditioning?

  10. Garret January 26, 2010 7:12 am

It seems that a JC DE that visited UH over the weekend is ready to commit to UH if UH offers a scholarship.

This past season, CCSF DE Frank Gaines (6-3, 220) was solid, helping to the lead the Rams to a 10-1 season. This past weekend, the talented defensive end visited Hawaii to check out what the Warriors had to offer and he said he should find out very soon whether he has an offer or not.

    Coach Heffernan:

Will there be any significant changes to the strength and conditioning program for the football team with the recent staff changes? Do the players have access to a nutritionist, or do they have special diets pertaining to what kind of results you want to see from their bodies?

    Thanks and Good Luck

Much aloha, I was wondering, do you also agree that at least the “perception” of quality recruiting when it comes to Hawaii kids have are poor at UH?

I mean, with the lack of recruiting the “big” names, the ones many make out to be “top dogs”, or at least all state first teamers, that’s bad right…?

Do you also agree with my take that the last two seasons have been failures, that maybe it’s time to put it all on the head guy and the administrators that hired him. Oh, and paid him an OBSCENE amount of money..?

    Just checking.

Actually I’d like to hear all arguements for or against my take.

No name calling, just serious talk please, I know how some of you like to bitch, moan, whine and cry when an opinions not butt-kissing or all hunky-dori.

  41. protector January 26, 2010 9:23 am

    EH NO MAKE!,

You never miss an opportunity to make a dig at Coach Mack or the team. Don’t think that you’re fooling anybody by starting something out as a compliment like the one you grudgingly made about Heffernan.

Just make sure that you’re not the one to bitch, moan, whine and cry when the majority DISAGREE with YOU! You see everybody that disagrees with you as butt-kissers; what an arsinine perception. There are many loyal fans here who are disappointed, but remain supportive and offer constructive criticism. Your criticism is “destructive” and offers no solutions other than to fire the coaches. How dare you pronounce the last 2 years of recruits as failures. Most people know that you don’t evaluate a recruiting class in the first 2 years anyway.

  42. haka January 26, 2010 9:24 am

    #41
In regards to your opinion of recruiting failure by the present coaching staff, I have to ask, “when did we ever land the top, “big name” talent locally?”

Now, if you mean that the present staff is NOT even recruiting these guys then I have to wonder if that is really true.

I too would have liked better results, but I do not know what constitutes the past two seasons as being “failures” in your mind. In my evaluation, I thought we did well with all that transpired. Rome wasn’t built in two years no matter how much the emperor got paid. The growing result of coaching changes usually never bears fruit for 3-5 years. Only on a few occasions does a coach excel in his or her first year or two after taking over a program and even at that, it is usually followed up by a down year or two.

“No name calling, just serious talk please, I know how some of you like to bitch, moan, whine and cry when an opinions not butt-kissing or all hunky-dori.”

    What do you call this?

  43. traff January 26, 2010 9:28 am

SThirteenTurbo, err I mean EH NO MAKE !,

You probably consider yourself a fan. But you don’t get that those on this blog are UH supporters – something that you are not. You can think and say what you like, but why do you feel the need to do do it here? You should keep your poison on WSN where you Gobo and Coco can all hate Mack and bad mouth UH sports together. That’s what that board is. The only thing you guys get off on more than dissing Mack is trying to annoy people. You keep fishing hoping someone will bite. Not everyone is as miserable as you.

Never have I taken a dig at the team, NEVER. Head coach yes, team, the kids, NEVER. I take offense to that.

Tommy Heffernan decision IS a good idea, a great one. Period.

Oh, and I ALWAYS offer a solution. It’s simple, fire the damn coach. How easy of a solution is that.
You a loyal fan, you a “supporter”, are you?
You buy season tickets, you make donations to Na Koa / Koa Anuenue ?

I do. Season tickets in 4 sports. I pay, I go, I support, I give, I have my opinion. Period.

You can disagree, that’s fine, that’s cool, but don’t come with soft-crap like I’m not loyal, I’m not a supporter, that’s non-sense, that my friend is asinine.

    Haka:

Never said the curent coaching staf is NOT recruiting the top kids, fact is, they’ve been late or last getting on the top kids. If they’d let me, I’d name 4 of the top 10 by anybody’s list, that told me personally, that UH was last in making contact with them, or didn’y make contact or an offer, until another school made them an offer. Period. Fact.

You said you thought we did well as a team, damn, we were 7-6, no bowl game, and EMBARASSED in a few games. Losing is fine, I can take losing, but EMBARASSING is hard to swallow my friend.

Coach Hefferman! First off, congrats and much luck!

What are the top 5 things you advise players (or others looking to get into shape) to do when they start training?

On a side note, will your program for the team be made available for others looking to the same type of training to better their health? If so, can you let Stephen know because I’m still waiting for a copy.

    Thanks for your time!

It is said that actions speak louder than words. In your case, your words define you.

EH NO MAKE!…maybe if you could give the UH staff some guidance on how to recuit the best from this state and get their commitment, maybe there will be a position for you on the staff! Then you can make the big bucks!

When you say that UH not getting the good ones from here, what you saying about the ones who do decide to stay home?
We need your help with the recuits. Hard to fire the coach right now so try work around that and give the staff some ideas.

Interesting move by Rex Ryan, head coach for the New York Jets. Fired four coaches in order to improve next year. How’s that, you coach all the way to the AFC championship. Get tickets for your whole family, because they’re all excited that your coaching in the big game. Then wham, you have no job two days later.

    What a nasty business.

I’m sure glad that our head coach understands that wining isn’t everything, and that being loyal to your friends and associates is more important.

  60. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 26, 2010 10:35 am

There are those of us who have season tickets in FIVE sports and also attend games/matches/meets on a regular basis for many other sports as our schedules permit. I don’t think I’ve missed a softball game in its entirety for years.

I have yet to run across anyone on this blog who gives the coaches in the six major sports a pass 100% of the time. Many of the regulars also make comments on a particular players, especially on particular plays or in particular games.

However, there’s a world of difference between these comments and harping on firing a coach. Do not blame “the administrators” who hired McMackin – they were caught in a situation where the head coach haad quit and the Athletic Director had been fired within days of each other – and certainly do not hold Jim Donovan responsible either.

Who else would you have brought in and who else would have wanted to be brought in?

In any case, that was then and this is now – and there are no rewind buttons on life.

If people on this blog want to fire the football coaching staff, then start raising the money to buy out McMcackin’s contract. Otherwise, we are going to have to live with him through the 2012 season.

Off to work – will try to make the Camellia Cattle Call on Friday, but I cannot say for sure until Friday’s hearing notices come out. Is the buffet the only item on the menu there? Do they have a regular menu as well.

  61. NorthShoreFan January 26, 2010 10:35 am

I can’t see how somebody who loves the Warriors but hates their local recruiting would be dogging their coach so much in the midst of recruiting season right before LOI day. Is the oft repeated coach-hate going to help the local recruits decide to stay home? What am I missing?

  64. EH NO MAKE ! January 26, 2010 10:44 am

  68. EH NO MAKE ! January 26, 2010 10:59 am

    NorthShoreFan:

Recruiting Hawaii is fairly simple to tell you the truth, and the formula works, it has a track record, it’s proven to work but other plans are chosen instead.

Deal is this, make a list, say maybe 20-25 of the top high school talent in the state. First, to make that list, watch the video tape, consult high school coaches, appreciate their input, keep a running list as to what coaches are more consistent than others over the years so UH could put more trust into their eye for talent.

Second, be ON those particular kids before their junior seasons.

Third, be first. Do not let coaches / recruiters from other schools be first in our backyard. That, according to many of the kinds, coaches and their families, is an absolute turn off

Fourth, be honest, be up front, don’t sugar coat anything.

Fifth, show them the love. Hawaii kids cannot all be Plan B’s. They can’t be the recuruits that only get shown the love after a mainland school shows interest. That, well, that reeks of “we’ll pass on the local kid because if nobody else offers he can always walk on”. That stinks.

    Sixth, stay ON them.

Seventh, UH cannot be out worked in recruiting.

It’s a given, other schools come into Hawaii with more. More money, more of a budget, more better facilities, Hawaii NEEDS to outwork the others.

Okay, it’s a given that many Hawaii kids, traditionally the ILH kids especially, are already “brainwashed” to go to the mainland, but they still need to be shown the love.

In case you’re wondering, these things are NOT being done!

What part don’t you get about coach Mack being in charge? What do you NOT understand about what it would take to remove him, and why would you? I Have never heard you respond intelligently to that.

The personal attacks, that seems to be your defense mechanism. Irritating and worse then a whiner. I hope you find what you’re looking for on another forum, because this is not what we are about on this one.

Coach Heffernan – How individualized is the offseason strength and conditioning program for the players? Is it based on individual goals or more general things like position goals, body type, etc?

  74. EH NO MAKE ! January 26, 2010 11:08 am

    Kekoa:

To be honest, you must not know what you’re talking about.

Now I’m not saying this to “stir up crap” as you call it, but that is NOT what is being done. Period.

If you believe that’s what’s going on, than I got some land near the volcano I wanna sell to you for cheap.

I’m being up front and honest folks, that’s NOT what’s being done here in Hawaii.
Talk to the kids and their families, I did, I do, I will, not ONE of them can back up wjat you BELIEVE in going on Kekoa.

  75. lava January 26, 2010 11:11 am

Eh No Make, you give me irritable bowel syndrome like that guy at the other forum that goes by IPatentllo7o1. You have to be the same troll. Please get a life.

  76. EH NO MAKE ! January 26, 2010 11:12 am

I have decided you are not worthy of responding. While your heart may be in the right place, you obviously are not up to speed in the workings of the real world.

What goes on in everyday life at the UH and what you BELIEVE to be true, well, they are worlds apart.

I wish well in all your endeavors but I don’t have time to deal with those that believe the sky is pink. In my world, it’s blue, well voggy blue these days but not pink.

I wish you well my friend

Does anybody have any questions for Tommy? Show starts in a little while.

  80. Tombo Ahi January 26, 2010 11:20 am

Coach Heffernan — I watched you play for the UH baseball team back in the day and I remember thinking “What is that bodybuilder doing playing baseball?” How early in life did you begin lifting? When is a good age for kids to start weight training? Thanks!

  81. 808Chef January 26, 2010 11:21 am

What inspires you and motivates you in life?

  89. 808Chef January 26, 2010 11:35 am

  95. NorthShoreFan January 26, 2010 11:54 am

EH NO MAKE!…I find it hard to believe that the coaching staff is that derelict in their program to assess and recruit our best players. JJ made it a point to get to the “good” ones but it seems that even with that commitment, we were not able to get commitments from a majority of the “best”.There has been some success but not to the level that the coaching staff can say they are satisfied,… I think.

At the same time, the ones that do want to be Warriors, IMHO, are the ones who have a passion for being a Warrior and representing the 808.
These guys are going to be very good representatives and players for the program and the state. Some need to go away for their own development but then when the opportunity comes, they come back! Hawaii No Ka OI!
Take the Beast. He had and has the passion to play in front of the Tsaiko’s and the 808, made the commitment to come back, give up a scholie, and prove himself to be a Warrior. That’s home state Pride, Passion and Commitment!
IMHO, he could play anywhere and be a factor.

Maybe the Tsaiko’s could be of assistence here. The Tsaiko use the connections and check up on possible future Warriors and make sure the UH staff knows what’s going on with the kids. Tsaiko’s have a huge connection and many “insiders” to high school programs.
Only thing is got to be sure not to violate and No Clue At All rules about contacting.
Anyhoo, pau rant for the day…back to the Loco Moco lunch experience. It’s about to be demolished!
Too much Tsaiko analysis today..got to rest now…

    anybody ask Coach Heffernan-

Specifically what kind of changes (compared to what has been done in the past) do you plan to immediately implement in the football training program for different positions?

What about some down the road changes?

  98. Kazz January 26, 2010 12:32 pm

  100. Old Diver January 26, 2010 12:53 pm

    Regarding # 77

    Forgot # 8

Some of the kids just don’t qualify for UH. UH doesn’t make exceptions like many Pac-10, MWC and WAC schools. When they go away just have to wish them well, and not blame UH coaches, cause they are not making admission policies. It is clear comparing years in the past, local recruiting has been priority one with Coach Mack, and who didn’t jump up and down and give out a holler when the Kapolei LB’s verbal committed.

    Go Warriors

  101. Garret January 26, 2010 1:11 pm

If anyone is curious as to the exact amount of money UH will get from the BCS, it is at this link.

The WAC gets nearly $7.8 million. Of that, $3,363,889 goes to Boise State, but the school must pay its bowl expenses out of that money.

The rest of the WAC gets $551,389 each.

  102. Garret January 26, 2010 1:12 pm

The University of Pacific just hired a coach who is in charge of recruiting in Hawaii…guess they will be hitting Hawaii hard.

Buckley today announced the hiring of Jacob Yoro as linebackers coach and coordinator of recruiting efforts in Hawaii.

Yoro comes to Pacific after one season as the linebackers coach at the University of Montana Western in Dillon, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record.

Prior to returning to the mainland, Yoro spent eight seasons coaching in the high school ranks in his native Hawaii. He spent the 2008 season at a linebackers coach and defensive consultant at Waipahu High School. Prior to Waipahu, Yoro spent six years at the St. Louis School in Honolulu where be began as linebackers coach before spending three seasons (2005-2007) as defensive coordinator. Yoro began his coaching career at Mililani High School where he was the linebackers coach.

  106. d1ε³Ά January 26, 2010 1:18 pm

…and the HC at Pacific U. has already been pounding the turf in Hawaii hard.

D3, so no schollie money but the kids who wanna play right away will be interested.

#2 son and his teammates have them scheduled for Homecoming next season…methinks they might be everyone’s favorite Homecoming opponent for awhile! 😈

….but congrats to Yoro. He’s a great coach…did a great job as DC at SLS. (just had a little trouble counting to 12 now and then)

jm2375 ~ I got your text. See you at the Feast for the Beast.

Sorry ENM: Not that I owe anyone an explanation about what I know of UH recruiting, but I did have 3 nephews that were on the UH ‘list’ for 2010.

~ All 3 had invites to visit UH aat various times (they were Jr’s).

~ All 3 were kept in the loop, by their HS coaches.

~ All 3 have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.

~ All 3 had many other schools including Stanford, BYU, Oregon, offer.

~ All 3 made their visits. 2 of 3 are going away. 1 Fresno, 1 Utah.

~ The last one may still go away. Point is, all made their choices for personal reasons and not because UH didn’t try hard enuff. It was their chance to excercise and make a determinatioin.

The ‘real’ world? If you only knew what my world was like! I normally prefer to *listen* to what everyone else has to say on the blog. Most of whom try to keep it within friendly confines.

Then there are people who just get off on saying mean things. Normally I like to joke with people. You know, “Laughter, the best medicine!”

I appreciate your trying to end it on a civil note in #85, but I am not your friend. I’ll just leave it at that.

  109. NorthShoreFan January 26, 2010 1:54 pm

Beau to Baylor and Hauoli to UDub, nuff already. Concentrate on the others we can convince to be Warriors. Get ready for the season, get stronger, quicker, faster.
Welcome and Good Luck 2010 Warriors!

  110. NorthShoreFan January 26, 2010 1:58 pm

  111. ai-eee-soos January 26, 2010 1:58 pm

Beau Yap – you shoulda gone to SMU instead.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Waco; be prepared for a cultural shock.

  112. NorthShoreFan January 26, 2010 2:04 pm

Did we get caught with too much offers and not enough scholies?

  113. Dan-O January 26, 2010 2:05 pm

People….let’s be realistic. Some kids don’t grow up wanting to be Warriors. Nothing wrong with that…..for various reasons, kids wanna go away and play and get a college education for free.

To put blame on the coaches cause kids choose elsewhere is ridiculous. Limited number of scholarships, limited number of kids can be offered. And its not even solid until the kids sign on the dotted line.

To think that we as arm-chair quarterbacks and fans know more than the coaches recruiting these players is just as ridiculous. Let’s just focus on, and welcome the ones that want to be Warriors…..and wish well the others going elsewhere.

  114. Windward January 26, 2010 2:08 pm

Heard Stuz may also be headed to Forest Grove. Oldest son is a recent grad and the facilities are constantly growing including new dorms and athletic facilities. A great location and educational opportunity for the student looking for small classes, lots of local connections, and a place to continue playing sports in college. A large segment of the students participate in sports and it helps them stay focused. Pacific is also generous when it comes to financial aid.

Any word on Kona Schwenke. Looks like he is still for the taking. Now that Jamora may be gone and Beau Yap is probably gone, might as well go hard for Kona if he still wants to be a Warrior.

    Very good!!!!!!!!

  127. Da Punchbowl Kid January 26, 2010 3:00 pm

    wafan-
The WB Show was flawless on my pc,and the interview with Coach Heffernan was great.

His biggest concerns now are to get the strength and conditioning started and to get the players to buy into whatever program he presents and to attend every session. He emphasizes commitment and accountability, working hard for the sake of the team and each other. He also wants the players to stay here in the summer and work hard together.

He had some great stuff to say regarding the work outs as well, regarding them being appropriate to football.

I have been and remain impressed with Coach Heffernan, he comes off as very knowledgable and very comitted to the program.

A great job by Tsai and Wai once more.

  128. wafan January 26, 2010 3:16 pm

    dpk . . .

    Thank you for the recap.

  129. wafan January 26, 2010 3:19 pm

The Honolulu Symphony was joined, today, by the Everett Symphony. After 77 years, this Friday will be the last performance for the year. Hopefully, they will return next year.

    Another casualty of the economy.

  130. RedZone January 26, 2010 3:30 pm

According to Heffernan they only got 2 full-time coaches and 2 GAs while some other schools may have up to 10. With what he has they have about 500 athletes they are responsible for. Facilities upgrade would be nice too.

  131. al January 26, 2010 3:40 pm

    wow.

  132. Da Punchbowl Kid January 26, 2010 3:44 pm

    wafan-

He said a lot more, not sure I could recall all of it.

He mentions that among the D line, Vaughn Meatoga impressed him the most, both for his work ethic, strength, and leadership.

  133. J-Dog January 26, 2010 3:56 pm

Jamora and Schwenke would be a dream for UH….

…and a nightmare for opposing offenses!

  134. J-Dog January 26, 2010 3:57 pm

I hope Yap to Baylor isn’t the midweek news ST was referring to a few days ago.

No forget Espenesa and Lagafuaina as well.

  135. madeinhawaii January 26, 2010 4:03 pm

No Honolulu Symphony ..one of the longest running symphony’s in the US.. and no big $$ supporter for it after all these years…wow.. No mainstream live theatre. Just the itty bitty ones and those under the UH umbrella.

  136. BigIslandkurt January 26, 2010 4:24 pm

It’s only natural that a majority of good-natured, level-headed, die hard UH football fans can’t accept the fact that there are people (and recruits) in this world who do not look at UH the same way they do.

    BIK

  137. Stephen Tsai January 26, 2010 4:30 pm

It’s pretty clear that one poster does not want UH to succeed in recruiting.
    It’s pretty sad.
To purposely bad mouth recruiting when all of the decision have not been made is intentional.
But pity the poor guy. For whatever reason, he’s pretty angry. Sounds mostly like he’s angry at himself.
And let’s face it. He’s only coming here because this has the biggest forum. I mean, he could easily start his own blog and rant away. But who would listen? Who listens now.
Anyway, we’re all decent, respectful people so we tolerate rants.
But trust me. We all know better.

  138. YODA January 26, 2010 4:31 pm

Word on the street is Epenesa is UCLA bound!

  139. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 26, 2010 4:39 pm

Early bird here at the public meeting. Wahine basketballers practicing in the SSC… Saw a sign posted on a second floor office of the athletic complex that reads: “President Greenwood, we are NOT pleased.”

    Go figure…

    a crazed looking guy.
yelling. screaming, ranting, all to no avail
as no one can hear him.
    nobody even cares.
he’s the fool on the hill.

  141. wafan January 26, 2010 4:50 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

You are probably correct. But, sometimes with my kids I really hope to be there when they get their “reward” for their behavior(s) in a few years.

  142. Bulla January 26, 2010 4:54 pm

    Yoda,

    Really?

  143. Garret January 26, 2010 5:05 pm

UOP is in Stockton, CA; Pacific U. is in Forest Grove, OR.

    d1shima,

Thank you very much for the correction! I was wrong in my post above…I’ve never heard of Pacific U and didn’t read the article close enough.

Pacific U doesn’t affect UH recruiting much, but their focus might result in some players who would have walked on to UH to choose to go there to get a chance to play. They probably will be corresponding with Doris a lot, though!

Best of luck to your #2 son…you are probably correct that Pacific U will be a lot of team’s homecoming opponent until they get a few recruiting classes in.

  144. Pride. January 26, 2010 5:10 pm

Recruitiing is more about relationships than it is about facilities.

  145. Kazz (blkberry_storm) January 26, 2010 5:25 pm

Carl Clapp is a patient guy…

  146. RedZone January 26, 2010 5:29 pm

I can remember when UH used to play Pacific.

  147. madeinhawaii January 26, 2010 5:29 pm

    Pride…

Can’t agree more. Furthermore, it really sounds to me like those relationships have been getting stronger over the past two years. The Coaches have been making their rounds and I’m sure they have their notebooks full of little facts and facets of individual players that we will never get wind of. They appear to be looking for players that not only complement the team in the positions they play, but in the character, attitude and group values that the players share.

I’m looking forward to spring practice with the new recruits and walk-ons and the new season with all its players, both familiar and new.

Wonder who are new leaders will be?

  148. protector January 26, 2010 5:30 pm

    al,

I choose, like you, to believe there’s a chance & will continue to do so. No sense giving up too early…will wait till LOI Day.

LV the Fugu hides, as he is amazed by the size of these Piranha and the lack of hair on many.

The Fugu shudders to think of the damage these Piranha’s will do to his favorite Korean yakiniku joint, but is powerless to stop them.

well today a half a dozen of us tsaikos met at camellia’s. we ate, talked, and ate some more. we got there at 12:30 the place jamming. fortunately, stevem got there early and saved a long table for us. by the time we got up to finally leave at 2:00 pm the place was empty except for the anguish owner.

i guess i would be too if a half dozen elephants came in to partake of the all you can cook lunch. especially after we presented her with a 10% discount ad. she said, “i should charge you guys extra!!”

I must admit that after all the big boys had stopped eating, only one guy was still going.

This one guy was asking the rest of us “what you guys pau already!?!?”

… And this was the guy with the broken ribs.

Good lunch, wish more of you guys could have joined us…

as the smallest member of today’s contingent representation of tsaiko’s, i felt that it was my duty to try and catch up to my fellow bloggers in girth and weight.

by the way, tom mui came down to say hello. he was just dying to see what we all looked like. after watching us feed on the yakiniku he decided to leave since no one took the time to chat with him during the feeding frenzy.

The lunch at Camellia was a relatively quiet and dignified affair. It was polite of the crowd to quiet as bulla spoke to us from the other end of the table.

“Peaches” and I have eaten and Camellia before and she knows how to clean the kalbi, kim chee, and pork stains on my shirt front. But she’s going to be curious about how the back and sides of my shirt and pants got spattered.

And anybody see my laptop? Before I fell asleep after fifths, it was being used as a tray….

wow, i did take a nap and i am still full. whew.

well, i keep saying the kid only acts like a kid. he ain’t a small piranha but a big white shark.

while it was thought that i had eaten the most, it was mostly true that i ate the slowest. we all went up to fill our two plates at the same time. i recall only being half way through when bulla went up for his second round. stevem and the kid only nodded their heads and stuffed their faces while others conversed as we ate in between the words.

ajoe and wreck were the methodical eaters. just kept a quick pace and ate the precooked stuff because the bald one kept hawking their stuff.

we decided maybe go have a once a month lunch. since we don’t get bonuses like mr. gigi we cannot afford to go out three times per week. so tomw, its back to the tuna sandwich and bbq potato chips.

okay, off to a meeting now. check back with you kids tonight. um, one thing guys, you gotta force yourself to eat some dinner tonight otherwise you will be forced to reveal your luncheon whereabouts to the boss.

    urp. oops. sorry.

ok,just got back to the bat cave, and yes, i did have a very serious case of polynesian paralysis this afternoon, no offense WreckingEyez, but you were sitting directly across from me.

As usual, Eyez won the best dressed award, my vote is that he is a mail model, that’s not a typo, he thought male they said mail, and he’s been waiting to go postal ever since…..

We did some damage, as fast as the Asian Invasion arrived, is as fast as they departed…oh well, nice to see non english reading customers walking through the restaurant with lit cigarette drooping from their lips, kind of like a charlie chan movie gone awry.

Mahalo to Kid, Al StevenM, Joe, Eyez, and Tom Mui for the laughs today…some people might have thought they were looking off Kapalua…seemed like a lot of ‘breaching’ was going on.

Al likes to eat with us, how else does he look like he lost weight, sitting between the Kid and I he looked like one lost unagi wrapped too tight….when was the last time unagi wore glasses, haha.

Good fun, good laughs, smell like garlic, so no vampires tonight, haha.

Next time, we would like all of you other TSAIKOS to crawl out from behind your monitor and get out in the real world…..we don’t bite, nibble real hard, but don’t bite!!!

My first post today and final comments on yesterday’s Camellia lunch: No more weekday Tsai-ko buffets for me if I gotta work the next day. But I’m off next week…

Remember all those days on the blog with Da Punchbowl Kid trying to get at Al’s food? Consider this…

    1. Al, da Kid and I are sharing the same cooking grill.
    2. Al and Kid are cooking mostly the same stuff.
    3. Al’s got the fastest pair of chopsticks I’ve ever seen.
    4. The Kid looks up from the grill when he speaks.

    – – – – – – – –
When going to get our first round of food, an oriental couple about 5′ tall looked at me nervously and dashed in front of me. I was thought that was rude until I saw them snatch some kal bi bulla missed, turn their bodies and gingerly escape through the small opening between bulla and the Kid. Al and bulla were along the meat line and Kid was standing behind Wreckineyez for the veggies. When I went in behind the kid, the entrance was totally blocked and there was still Addahknowjoe behind me. Then I realized the couple didn’t want to trapped among us. The entry was blocked for a while πŸ˜‰

One of the reasons I eagerly attended the first cattle call is best explained in my “Bus Stop” musing at…

    http://home.roadrunner.com/~smurashi/tsai-kos/stevemuse.html

    …an excerpt:

…then, ST talked of the blog shutting down and I realized everyone was faceless …and the memories of the bus stop came flooding back.

A lunch at Camellia? I’m going. What’s your name? Can I have your email address? Here’s my card…do you have one? Where do you work? Yeah–I still get teased about that today. But I got the info. Was I planning to see them again?… go to tailgates, football games, parties, and karaoke? No. Not at that time.

But if the blog died, at least I knew I could find them again…

The blog and Tsai-kos have come a long way since then, so the “Bus Stop” scenerio fades with every “Call”– Cattle Call, Muu Call (Maui), Calf Call (CA), Karaoke Call, Cruiser’s Call, tailgate, etc.

Interesting that the basketball jerseys for sale for men and women are for #s 20 and 21.

Now, usually the jersey #s available are of “popular” players (i.e. #1 Greg Salas and #12 Greg Alexander) or of players known.

When I think of #s 20 and 21, #20 on the Wahine Shawna Kuehu and #21 Keisha Kanekoa come to my mind. I had to think about it and Paul Campbell wears 21 and Jeremy Lay sports #20.

Now, one would think that if they were gonna sport jerseys to fans, they’d pick #s 23 for Rod Flemings and #41 for Bill Amis, but we have 20 and 21.

However if they were gonna sport jerseys to the fans for women’s basketball #s 20 and 21 DO come to mind as Kanekoa and Kuehu are more of the known players and not so much Campbell and Lay.

    Just a thought…

It is great that three former UH players are coaching at a BCS school…except when they recruit a player UH wanted.

Three of Baylor coaches are former University of Hawaii players β€” Brian Norwood, Dino Barbers and Kim McCloud.

  174. Garret January 26, 2010 9:45 pm

One of JD’s close friends in now a head coach at a high school that used to be a football power in California. That could be a big benefit to UH down the road in recruiting…

El Modena football has a glorious history, and not all of it distant. The Vanguards won three CIF championships, in 1978, ’83 and ’84, during Bob Lester’s 20-year coaching tenure. They won four league titles during the 2000s.

Monday’s announcement was attended by several people with Servite ties. Jim Donovan, a friend of Drzanek’s since they were Servite teammates in the late ’70s, flew in from Hawaii for the event.

Drzanek has passed up high school head coaching opportunities, and college jobs, too. Why El Modena, now?

“When I met the people at El Modena, I could see the community wanted someone to give them a chance and work their kids hard,” he said. “That was really attractive to me. When I first talked with Mr. Briquelet, I could tell he set the bar high, and I thought, ‘OK, I can work in this arena.'”

  175. Garret January 26, 2010 9:48 pm

BYU just added a game against Texas in 2011. Texas also added home-and-home series against SEC, Big 10, and Pac-10 teams.

The Longhorns will play a home game against BYU in 2011, adding the Cougars to a list of future opponents that already includes UCLA, Mississippi, California and Minnesota.

A home-and-home series against Mississippi will be played in 2012 and 2013, and home-and-home series against both California and Minnesota will take place in 2015 and 2016.

  176. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 26, 2010 10:07 pm

A quick report on the Aloha Stadium repairs/remediation/updates and turf replacement project courtesy of Scott Chan:.

The reason why the spring ball game is not going to be held at Aloha Stadium this year is due to the safety of the public since there are major construction projects going on.

The freebie films are being shown in the parking lot and not inside the Stadium as first proposed for the same reason.

The Pro Bowl WILL be back in Hawai`i in 2011 but the decision as to whether it will be before or after the Super Bowl will not be made until after The Big Cheeses evaluate how successful the 2010 Pro Bowl is.

The turf replacement project is already in the planning phase. The State’s share of the financing is in the Governor’s 2010 budget being evaluated by the House Finance Committee.

NOTE: Will follow up on this over the next couple of days.

The NFL has committed $100,000 and may commit another $100K after seeing how well DaGov’s request does as it wends its way through the sausage-making process.

In any case, the Request for Bids will not be issued until after July 1, 2010 with the current plan to start the actual work in late spring and summer of 2011. How long it will take will be determined by an engineering evaluation of the sub-strata below the existing turf.

NOTE: Wonder if I can get an internship with the successful bidder – assuming I am admitted into the Civil Engineering program.

Assuming that there are no money glitches nor engineering problems, the new turf will be ready for Home Game 1 with _______________(please fill in the blank) in the 2011 season.

Mahalo to Scott Chan for providing the updates.

  177. Garret January 26, 2010 10:10 pm

    WassupDoc,

Thank you for the update and I’m glad it seems that the turf will be taken care of before the 2011 season…though I wish it was ready for the 2010 season, 2011 is the best that can be hoped for at this point.

UH opens its football season in 2011 with a game against Colorado at Aloha Stadium on 9/3/11.

  178. BleedGreen808 January 26, 2010 10:12 pm

    ST,

Is there anyway you can post pictures of the new UH football wing. I am yearning to see what it looks like. Thanks!

  179. Garret January 26, 2010 10:19 pm

With Tommy Heffernan being the guest today on the WB show, it was interesting to learn that UH has 2 full-time trainers (and 2 GAs) while bigger budget schools might have 10 full-time strength and conditioning coaches. Kind of like some schools might have 8-10 compliance people while UH has 1.

No only do big budget schools have more trainers, but they pay them more too. I saw a post that said that SMU’s strength and conditioning coach earned something like $75k per year and he left for Florida State where he’ll make $160k per year. That is a HUGE difference in pay…

    Capitol -ist/WassupDoc on # 177, re: 2010 Pro Bowl

Do you think that those Big Cheeses will be conscientious about having an honest evaluation? Or will they just jimmy the figures to support that they didn’t make an idiotic venture? I find it difficult to believe that they would admit to the shift being a huge blunder. I already see it as a failure in terms of the talent / quality level of the participants and it’s sheer idiocy that the many Pro-Bowlers on the Super Bowl teams won’t be able to take part in the festivities with a deserved Hawaiian vacation.

I think that it’s great that as many Hawaii kids get scholarships as possible.
Not just for the players, their families and their future teams. But for the state as well. A well-educated populace makes us a better state.

As for basing a recruiting class’ rating on a list, the question is: Whose list?
How does anybody know who’s on UH’s list? Or what the priority is? Maybe UH got the top players on its list. Maybe it didn’t. But I’m certain that nobody outside of the coaching staff has seen the UH list.
