The football team was told that because linebacker Brashton Satele had completed five years of eligibility and earned a degree in December, he would have to count as part of UH’s 2010 recruiting class if he were to successfully petition for a sixth year of football.
Lee Ann Satele, like the rest of us, thought that was an odd rule. So she personally called the NCAA and was told that, no, her son would not count as one of the 25 initial scholarships. She then notified UH.
Satele, who is taking on-line classes while training in Arizona, returned to Honolulu for a few days. He already has lost 10 pounds.

Former UH defensive tackle Michael Lafaele has been working out intensively the past several weeks. We’ve been told he is considering whether to take a retest at UH’s Pro Day in Carson, Calif.
Lafeale completed his UH eligibility at the end of the 2008 Sugar Bowl. He participated in the 2008 Pro Day, but was not drafted nor offered a free-agent contract.
He has had a successful career in marketing and advertising.

Ran into Mel deLaura at a basketball game last night. DeLaura, who was replaced as the lead strength/conditioning coach for the Warrior football team, is on vacation through Feb. 5 .He said he will announce his future plans after that.

Silly roosters used to be up in Palisades a bunch of years ago. I think they used to see the street lights or were just not very bright. Neighbors complained. Someone got ahold of the phone number of the house. Owners did not like the random calls at all hours of the night/morning. Roosters went away.

I can possibly get on board with the timing of the game, and maybe even the location, though most players seem to be a bit miffed that Hawaii is out and places like Detroit and Indianapolis become the “reward” destination. It’s not unusual for players to bring families, or for running backs to bring their entire offensive line as a thank you. I can see it now “Hey guys, thanks for blocking all year for more and getting me into the Pro Bowl. As a thank you, I’ve paid for your airfare to beautiful, wintery Detroit. You can tour the remains of the auto industry factories and even stop by Motown if you really want to. As an extra thank you, I bought all of you a bullet proof vest, in case you want to walk to dinner one night.” Doesn’t sound too glamorous.

That’s so true. Any of the NFL cities they move the Pro Bowl to is *same-o-same!* That’s why they enjoyed coming here.
They loved the diversity of our islands, and most remained here a few extra days to relax and take in the sights.
The stadium authority should have been keeping up
with the times. Right now they are our weakest link. Judging from W/Doc’s reports, they have no vision for the future.

Re: Pro Bowl
I think the problem with the Pro Bowl this year isn’t just the location. The timing is terrible.
Most of the NFL personnel people are at the Senior Bowl.
ST ~ Word on the street includes some recruiting possibilities from out of Samoa. Hoping it’s true.
As reported late last night, the Pro Bowl will be back in Hawai`i in 2011 and 2012.
Only 15 days to the real start of the 2010 softball season and 23 days to UH baseball although DaBeegs will start spring training in ten days when the throwers report to work.
Stadium:
As I see it, the problem is there just isn’t enough money.
If you charge UH rent, then UH grumbles.
If you keep concessions and parking, then UH grumbles.
If you raise parking prices — giving half of the money to UH — then the fans grumble. And they’ll grumble some more because, as everyone (re-)discovered last year, there aren’t enough parking stalls.
So where do you get additional income?
There’s the swap meet. But what happens on game days when there’s a swap meet.
I’d love to see E.K. Fernandez set up rides year ’round. Then again, Can’t do that during football season. And if you over-do it, then eventually interest goes down.
More concerts? Nobody wants to come unless it’s the back end of an Asian tour. Too expensive. MJ was willing, but he’s not with us anymore.
Who are the most popular performers now? Lil Wayne. Drake. Don’t think they would fill the stadium. Plus, Lil Wayne is going to prison next month.
Then it goes back to selling ads. Aloha Stadium actually does that very well. Problem is that competes against UH’s sales. Which is why the stadium looks like a NASCAR auto now.
And one final thing: the stadium is so old that they’re not making those type of seats anymore. Aloha Stadium gets ’em where it gets ’em.
Kkekoa and Others:
The biggest barrier to making major improvements to Aloha Stadium is dealing with naming rights as well as corporate sponsorships. I believe that there is some support at the Legislature to address these issues – probably not this Session although one never knows until it’s over – and then come back with a plan. Again, let me do some research on this and what we can do to support the efforts to change How Things Are Done Around Here.

ST as far as aloha stadium goes I think the next big event is gonna possibly be a ufc event and if the card is stacked I can guarentee a sellout, it would be good to have a permanent drive inn theater well except for the nights when the home team plays.
By the way, we should all thank Doc for her tireless and selfless work in attending public hearings and going through all of the public records that few of us would have the patience to do.
What’s more, she provides her research to us.
And if she doesn’t know something, she’ll go and find out.

Looks like a Florida receiver will be visiting UH this weekend.
Why is Notre Dame recruiting in Hawaii? They took two Hawaii boys last year and are in the running for two more Hawaii boys this year. With the ability to recruit nationally, why would they come all the way to Hawaii? I can understand Manti Te’o, but not the other three guys. It’s enough that we have to contend with the Pac 10 and the MWC, but now we go against the Big 12, SEC, ACC, and Notre Dame. Colorado, Baylor, Arkansas, and West Virginia are also in the hunt for our football players.
I know that sounds like sour grapes. I should be happy for these local kids and their famlies. Just getting frustrated at the steep uphill climb that Hawaii faces on a yearly basis. We should be very happy and fortunate for those that see and understand Gov. Burn’s vision. Those that stay home to play for the home team.

Don’t forget that this is a transition year for Notre Dame so their coaches must be scrambling a little. Hopefully next year they don’t need to go after Hawaii recruits as much.
On the other hand, it seems that they realize how good Manti is and they may feel that Hawaii recruits are better than others may realize. If they get 4 recruits out of Hawaii in 2 recruiting classes, I would think that they might try to keep that pipeline going…and unfortunately for UH (and for the Pac-10), they might be able to get a few of the top 5 recruits each year.
Hold on Garret, are you telling me you went to Heeia also. I thought we just went to the same high school, but now we went to the same elementary school too! I think you are like a year or two older than me, so we must have seen each other at some point.

My sister and I went to Heeia and my parents live very close to the school. I graduated from Castle in 85 and my sister in 89, if you want to figure out when we were at Heeia. Next time I’m in Hawaii if you still live there maybe we can catch up at a cattle call…
80% that DeLaura will end up working w/ June Jones. They’ve been life long friends since they were teammates at UH and Portland St. I even caught passes from JJ during summer at Cooke Field w/ DeLaura when I was living in an apt. at Varsity Circle (little tidbit).

I just want to say thank you to our Hawaii born, and Damien graduate, Mel deLaura. For his long hours, commitment, and being there for our players. In coaching, 10 years is a long time. For many coaches, much longer than they have ever been in one school. Mahalo!
I also want to thank him for helping co-found the Hawaii Speed and Quickness clinics with Coach Miano in 2000 and continuing to be a part of the program.

SMU’s S/C coach for football was hired away by Florida State (from what I read he made about $75k at SMU and he now makes $160k at Florida State). Given the long friendship and working relationship between JJ and Mel, the rumors started then.
A few days after SMU had an opening at S/C coach, Tommy Heffernan replaced Mel at being in charge of the offseason workouts…with some people (including Dave Reardon on WSN) saying that Mel would not have been replaced if he hadn’t taken the SMU job.
jus to be safe al, let’s make sure UH understands that rule before thinking we have another scholie.

Very good news that Brashton doesn’t count towards the initial 25. That is a major mistake late in the recruiting process by the compliance office…I’m glad that mistake was corrected and hope that UH didn’t lose a prospect because they thought they didn’t have a scholarship to offer.

She was concerned because: 1) she didn’t want Brashton to cost UH a scholarship. 2) she wanted to assure her son that he did the right thing by not delaying his graduation. He now can work on credits toward a post-graduate degree.
In case anybody was alarmed, I decided to check.
The season-ticket renewal forms for UH football have NOT gone out.
They won’t be sent until at least March.
DeLaura is not going to SMU.
If what Mrs Satele says is accurate…then whoever UH’s compliance officers’ is/are, should be canned or strongly rebuked by their superiors.
For the record, every prospect I’ve seen on these so-called lists has, at one point or another, received an offer from UH.
Whether they decide to go to UH or somewhere else is a choice made by the players and their families. I don’t believe any of us have the right to question their decisions, just as I’m sure nobody has a right to tell our children where to attend.
I’m sure we wish each island son the best wherever he chooses to go. Once again, the main thing is the player gets an extended education and makes the choice that fits him the best.
You will need to get an official response (ie. letter, e-mail) from No Clue At All before I start celebrating. Too many times I get different answers from organizations when I call for information. It depends on who you talk to sometimes and this too important to be misinterpreted. I hope there is official follow up instead of just mom calling. Dis is nutz! the school should be on it!

Also, although I am very happy for Tom Heffernan, Mel DeLaura has been such a positive influence for so many young athletes over the years, including the youngsters in the Speed and Quickness camps. I hope things work out for him.
Personally, I’d like deLaura to say and to continue being a part of the UH Athletics program.

The Warrior program may not fit the athletes and the main thing is getting a free education! How does a degree from USC, Stanford, Harvard, Notre Dame etc. look on the resume? Not saying UH doesn’t offer quality education but fact is not all athletes from the 808 can fit in with the program.

Garret, of course I no the first part of what you are saying, that’s quite obvious. However, I believe that the latter part of your statement is more along the lines of what I was thinking. Not only were they happy with what they’ve seen of Manti on film, but I think that the Notre Dame coaches also understand what kind of competitive athletes that we have here in Hawaii after they barely eked out a win to end the 2008 season when they were at Cincinatti.

Stanford replaced their wooden stands with aluminum stands on dirt in a big hole. One cannot compare Stanford’s stadium and a spanking new concrete stadium built on a level surface.
Concerning the Satele scholar issue. Could be that both explanations are correct or the rule is so poorly constructed that it is subject to misinterpretation. Hope the matter is cleared up soon.
The current infrastructure at the UH campus would be a traffic nightmare for even a 20K football stadium.

Speaking of stadium…
Looks like they’re getting to work on the unfinished portions of the Aloha Stadium roof and lights.
On-campus UH stadium:
Where would you put it? How many current buildings would have to be displaced?
How about UH buying out all the owners at Varsity Circle/Place and build an elevated stadium that will have an “under-pass” for H-1. Use part of lower campus and all of Varsity Circle/Place. If need be, stretch it out to King Street. The “lower level” can be used for buses, delivery vehicles, emergency vehicles, office and storage space, meeting/classrooms, etc. Maybe, even put a roof with walls for Cooke/Ching Field to make an indoor training field. And, get rid of the existing University Ave on/off ramp to H-1 (makai side only).
To reduce expenses, can the Engineering Department and School of Architecture do some of the planning to give students “practical” experience and college credits for their particiaption? Add the College of Business and Arts & Sciences for their expertise. Don’t forget the expertise at KCC, HCC, and LCC. Meals cooked by culinary students can be sold in a restaurant which gives students invaluable,practical experience and customers excellent cuisine. All food prepared on site by the students. Revenues to be shared with all.

H-1 on-ramp and off-ramp to UH are not ideal either, ok, unless you are coming from the East and take the exit to lower campus, that’s the only good off ramp. Coming from the West is junk and just getting back on, people here can’t yield or merge!!!
While it would be nice to have an on-campus arena:
1) Where would the money come from?
2) Where would people park?
3) Look how bad traffic is after a basketball game drawing 6,000

All of which will happen 20 years after I’m dead.

I would just ban parking on campus and nearby. A lot of on-campus stadiums don’t have parking at all. Fans are bused in or walk. This is where a UH stop on the rail would help. Lots of ways to do this, but it requires a lot of thinking out of the box which may be asking a lot.
Lots of questions about funding and more importantly maintenance (a nightmare on the upper campus) of such a facility once it’s build. On the other hand, the Stan Sheriff arena seems to be well taken care of by those in charge. I’ve seen Rich Sheriff, the manager, outside pulling weeds with the maintenance/student help in the past.
2080 is quite aways from now.
Staying with #122, yes those USC, ND, Harvard credentials look good and they definitely help get one in the door. BUT, it’s what you do once in the door that counts. Same on the ball field. Jerry Rice comes to mind as he came from a very small school, did what he had to do on the field and was rewarded for it. I can’t even remember the name of that highly touted WR from SC that got “in the door” but could not perform on the field and now we have a difficult time even remembering who he is or if he’s still in business.
Schooling is no different, went public school, went UH, but when I got in and had a chance to perform did what I had to do and am proud to say, still employed…and happy. At the end of the day, isn’t that what’s important in life? Taking responsibility for success will bring success, no matter where you go. It’s the responsibility part that’s hard.

yet, like you say, once on the field it was a totally different story, one which will end with his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. I’m still ticked at the 49ers for not signing him for 1 day before his retirement so he could end his “active status” being a 49er. on the other hand, maybe he didn’t want to do that!
however, do still remember that the first pass to him, right in the hands, fell out for an incompletion; don’t think that ever happened again!
Re #122, 140 (NorthshoreFan & Buffoman) I once worked with a guy who was a Harvard grad. Bright guy, but whenever you talked to him he would inevitably throw in the fact that he went to Harvard. Too funny.
I agree that it’s what you do after you get that diploma that counts. Important things in life are family, friends, happiness, waking up in the morning and looking forward to going to work (maybe that’s taking it too far). Anyway, you get the message.
buffoman..that’s it..everything comes down to what you do with it. You one good example. Public all the way and still successful. Then that would be a whole discussion again.
Highly touted players is the same thing. Big programs can bring the recognition but then ultimately, it’s up to the player who can develop or not. UH have a lot of former players in the nfl who might not have come to UH with the highest “credentials” out of high school.
So the disappoinment of not having the best players in the 808 this year or in future years, is offset by the fact that I know a lot of the players we have and will get in the future, will turn out to be something special for UH. The fun part of all this is that we get to watch them develop and become “special” people. That’s why I love college sports. Especially UH sports.

can’t envision an on campus fball stadium for UH. at one time possible if UH moved on the purchasing land St. Francis is located on. traffic could have been worked out and parking could have been accommodated but the owners pulled the offer off the table. also mpi might have considered closing and selling also. but times changed and each school is doing really well now. those two parcels would have give UH considerable areas to work with.

Thank you for the information that the issue with Brashton’s scholarship wasn’t under the compliance office but instead under the person in charge of scholarships. If UH received something in writing that says that Brashton’s scholarship counts towards the initial 25, then I would hope they make sure to get something in writing to back up what the NCAA told Lee Ann Satele…just to protect themselves in case the NCAA comes calling.

I agree with you, but as we all know education is important. A good book I read recently was called ‘The Richest Man in Town’ by V.J. Smith. It’s a short read, but really hit the heart pretty hard. It boils down to this…..in a very simple and basic story, a true story at that:

Bulla…IMHO, not off topic. Sports whether it be at the grade school, high school, college, or professional level teaches life lessons well. Being able to compete will teach you that “you not all that”. There will be success and failure. If you can learn to deal with it and use it to motivate, learn and persevere, you will succeed. Too corny?
Anyhoo, watching the UH athletes compete and in most games are very competitive, I always have a feeling that we will come away with a victory.
Even though we don’t get the “best of the best” year in and year out like some of the other programs. Our athletes really do a great job. Playing sports at the collegiate level is really a life course in it’s self. This past season the Warriors were faced with a lot of adversity but did great, IMHO.
Proves we have good student athletes at Manoa. Proves our coaches are doing a great job with the program.
2010 is another year fulll of expectations and excitement.

North Shore Fan re #108…when you call the NCAA for a rule clarification they will always supply you with the bylaw section, paragraph and line so you can easily find it in the coaches guide. They also offer to email you the bylaw so you’ll have it in writing. This is probably the only thing that Never Can Assume Anything does well.

Stadium on campus? We have been through this before. I recall that one of our bloggers even showed how it could be done. And there is always Bishop Estate who owns the land around Puck’s Alley and the land on King Street/Coyne Street where that strip mall is, the old Varsity Theatre, Burger King etc.
Work out a deal with them to give all those with Hawaiian blood, who qualify, a free ride (like Kam School) in exchange for a long term commitment on those properties which could be used for parking, classrooms etc. Or JJs plan to put it in the Ala Wai Golf Course!
If we have rail, UH has to be a stop. All we need is vision, commitment and a lot of $$$

all of you following the recruiting games, do you think perhaps this is why so many of the blue chippers have not yet committed? perhaps this is the real tug of war in committing to a college for four-five years.
believe me it is. happens every year and many a household. its going on in aiea, kahuku, kapalama hts, waipahu, and so on.
remember this, every national letter of intent must be signed by the student/athlete and both parents whether they are still married or divorced.
…and so finally, the boss steps in to put her foot down and the son goes there.

I’ve found that many people going away are doing so to get away.
One player last year decided to go away for that very reason. But they’re not going to say that. They’ll say, “UH didn’t show me enough love,” or “UH made an offer so late.”
If timing were an issue, then a prospect should say: OK, if I don’t get an offer by the end of November, I’m not considering UH.
UH has a limited number of scholarships. If it makes an offer, that means it really wants a guy. It’s like a prom. You don’t ask someone you don’t really want to take.
There was a hotshot basketball player who went away claiming UH didn’t show enough love.
Again, what does a school have to do? Send flowers?
Here’s a news flash: On Feb. 4 (the day after signing), no prospect is going to feel as much love as he felt the day before.

My take on the latest recruiting news, or lack thereof, is that UH had some players designated as their preferable option, and imposed some deadlines, and we hit those without announcements, so those players will be moving on to other schools, and UH will be making offers to some of its second-tier-preference guys.
maybe having a bunch of volunteer moms and dads at the athletic dept’s compliance office would serve us better.

I hope what I say doesn’t put anyone off, but this is MY take on kids deciding to go to play somewhere besides UH. I am in no way trying to put down any student-athlete. As a fan, I wish all the best from Hawaii would want to play at home in front of their ohana and friends. It could be as simple as wanting to go away and being on their own for the first time in their lives. It could be an academic program at a specific school.
Then again it could be the pressure of not just playing for UH, but for an entire state. I really don’t think you get that at any other institution in the US. The simple fact is that if they WANT to play for Hawaii they will. If they want to play somewhere else then they will. I wish nothing but the best to those student-athletes. Hopefully they represent themselves and where they are from well.

NOLI is a transposition of letters to express my frustration of the game in NOLA – pure and simple – nah, I was really trying to do the NLOI = national letter of intent, but fingers just do not cooperate when mental tiredness drops in.
In my opinion Hawaii has always done well with a good balance of Hawaii guys and mainland guys on the football team. If you’re talking 25 scholarships a year, then we’re probably looking at 12 local kids, 12 mainland kids, and maybe 1 from American Samoa. I think that with the commits that the Warriors have so far, we’re almost right on the money for this year. We’ll probably lose about three or four between now and August, but it’ll still be pretty balanced after it plays itself out.

coming down the homestretch for recruiting, I would not be surprised if there are many players who will not have any scholie offers to the school of their choice. it seems that many schools have reached a point in their recruiting that there will be a lot of disappointed players left hanging on feb 3rd.
another pitfall for these recruits to the high end schools is that the school may renege their scholie at the last minute because they feel that they have a better player that they can sign. that is very shameful, but it is the way of life in big time recruiting.
time to go back “undercover”.
With a dominating win against SJSU and about 13 more games to go, the Rainbow Wahine basketball team already surpassed the total wins they had under Jim Bolla’s reign of crap all of last season and we have essentially the same roster with a few different faces.
Makes me laugh at those that actually defended Bolla’s kicking incident as a “frustrated coach” insinuating that the players were the problem… right…
From the beginning, the drive, the inspiration, and the effort has been there for the Wahine. While the Xs and Os of the game continue to be worked on, the intangibles I just mentioned are already there.
Just needed a new breath of fresh air on the coaching staff and I said it before, the talent level that was on the roster this season and LAST season was WAY better than a 8-23 record for the 08-09 season.
And to think… these same Bolla defenders also couldn’t wait for UH to fail in Bolla’s bullcrap lawsuit against the university… 🙄

A-House, was a little smaller than what has been the usual 700-800 this season. Probably around 500-600. More people sat on “our” side of the arena (aka the side the main TV camera doesn’t show).
The Wahine handled their business pretty well tonight and even with “Wicked Wanda” as one of the officials tonight, Chawan was pretty quiet from his end of the arena tonight. Me, Myki, and SJ almost forgot he was there! 😆
Since Pride played the game I think his assessment of what our recruiting class looks like at the moment is more accurate as opposed to the few opinions of others fueled by pilau eggs, angst, and the occasional outburst of Tourette’s.

To add to this, for the local kids that grew up watching UH football live and being around relatives or friends that also follow UH football closely or loosely, I personally think that another aspect to the pressure of playing for UH and Hawaii as a whole is the way a good number of local people treat the program during rough times.
Without getting into the whole “bandwagoner” thing again, I can see and understand that if a kid that grew up watching UH football through all the good and tough times from the time he was 5 to the time he turned 18 years old and having to hear friends, uncles, aunties, or his own parents belittle UH football players (aka STUDENT ATHLETES) or even boo them at home, why he would be possibly seeking another school to play for.
Does this sound that far-fetched? I think not. Do I think every local high school kids experiences this? No, but who can deny that there is good amount of high school football players in Hawaii that experience first-hand the things said about UH football from their own friends and family when things aren’t 12-0?
And for those that want to justify “booing” the hometown team and the student athletes (i.e. NON-PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES) I am sure they think I am imagining things… Hmmm… I wonder why??? 🙄
So the next time some “Hawaii Fan” decides to boo UH at home or call a UH student athlete a (insert British slang word for cigarette *here*), they should put down the Steinlager and put on the “TAP OUT” t-shirt they just took off and try think about who maybe paying attention.
Shoot, if I had kids, I would want them to think twice about playing in front of a bunch of jerks like that.
Who knows? He may get the Jimmy Clausen bar treatment in public if he doesn’t have a good game. 😯

My father called customer service was called and they told him one would be shipped out and would arrive no later than the following Friday. No notice was given that the part was not or would not be shipped out to us.
