"Dawn" wins baseball tickets

By Stephen Tsai on March 12, 2010

Avis has selected “Dawn” as the winner of six tickets to Sunday’s baseball game. Text me with the full name to leave at Will Call. My cell is 256-0223. Thanks for playing. * * * * * Riley Wallace tells us that “Jim (Donovan) is really working it.” Translation: Donovan is being proactive in the search for the next UH basketball coach. Instead of just waiting for the applications to trickle in, the UH AD apparently also has been asking […]

jm2375 wins the beer

By Stephen Tsai on March 11, 2010

Avis has selected jm2375 as the winner of the case of Beers of the World. Thanks to Lisa Sekiya for donating the prize. * * * * * As expected, people representing coaches interested in the basketball opening have been contacting athletic director Jim Donovan and his advisory group. This actually is a workable system. Because Donovan is making the pick, there won’t be any announced final list of candidates. A final list often has scared away potential candidates who […]

It's complicated; d1島 wins baseball tickets

By Stephen Tsai on March 10, 2010

Avis has selected d1島 as the winner of six tickets to Saturday’s UH-USC baseball game. Congrats. I’ll leave the tickets in your name at Will Call. * * * * * In the real world, a person sees a job posting, sends in an application, goes through the interview process, and then waits for an answer. But job-hunting in college basketball, in Facebook-status parlance, is “complicated.” Some have their name “leaked” as being a candidate, as was the case with […]

(Jesse) James wins tickets; Scott Wong hired

By Stephen Tsai on March 9, 2010

Avis has selected (Jesse) James as the winner of four tickets to Friday’s UH-USC baseball game. Congrats. * * * * * As expected, Scott Wong was named as the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team’s associate coach, succeeding Mike Sealy, who is now UCLA’s head coach. The announcement had been delayed a day  because of the UH men’s basketball coaching situation. * * * * * Special thanks to UH second baseman Kolten Wong for serving as guest on today’s Warrior […]

End of Nash era

By Stephen Tsai on March 8, 2010

Athletic director Jim Donovan today dismissed Bob Nash as UH’s basketball coach. Nash as a year remaining on a contract that was extended last year. Boosters have contributed $100,000 to offset Nash’s $240,000 buyout. Donovan and Nash met last night, and Nash was asked to come up with a compelling plan to remain. Donovan said he decided this morning to make the move based purely on business — losing record, dwindling attendance. We’ve heard all sorts of names being dropped: […]

Got the time?

By Stephen Tsai on March 7, 2010

In 1995, three years after winning the Holiday Bowl and with a couple of years left on his revoloving football contract, Bob Wagner asked the higher-ups about his job situation. Apparently assured about his security, he started renovations on his house. With a game left in that season, he was fired. Business, he was told. Team had consecuive losing seasons, offense was uninspiring, and a change was needed to spur next season’s ticket sales. The point wasn’t whether it was […]

Comeback?

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2010

Former UH running back Nate “Nasti” Ilaoa said he is training in Arizona with the hope of participating in UH’s Pro Day April 1 in Carson, Calif. Ilaoa, who was the Philadelphia Eagles’ seventh-round pick in 2007, has not played professionally since he was a member of the Arena Football League’s Columbus Destroyers in 2007. The league folded shortly after that. During the 2009 season, Ilaoa served as a student manager with the Warriors.

What's my line?

By Stephen Tsai on March 5, 2010

During a presentation of the athletic department’s financial situation, athletic director Jim Donovan showed a data chart with two lines. The dark line was the department’s net budget for the past six fiscal years; the lighter line showed the budget excluding the more than $2 million earned from the Warrior football team’s participation in the 2008 Sugar Bowl. The designations were to emphasize that the Sugar Bowl season was an economic aberration. Which brings us to this season’s Rainbow Warrior […]
