As expected, people representing coaches interested in the basketball opening have been contacting athletic director Jim Donovan and his advisory group.

This actually is a workable system. Because Donovan is making the pick, there won’t be any announced final list of candidates. A final list often has scared away potential candidates who don’t want current employers to know they’re seeking jobs elsewhere. Going through representatives gives every candidate deniability — “What? I didn’t apply?” — while allowing the agent to gauge the chances.

Donovan, who is attending today’s WAC meetings in Reno, is expected back in town tomorrow. He’ll collect applications, then likely head back to the Mainland to conduct interviews.

Former UH linebacker Blaze Soares, who is training at Triple Threat in Arizona, has drawn inquiries from more than 10 NFL teams. During his two months in Arizona, his body fat has dropped from 19 percent to 10 percent.

Soares said former UH running back/slotback Daniel Libre has been impressive during his training, also in Arizona. Libre is squat-lifting 600 pounds.

Best wishes to Caryn Kunz Lesuma, our outstanding reporter who is moving to Alaska. (Warrior tie: Caryn, her husband, and UH’s Inoke Funaki and Tuika Tufaga were classmates at Kahuku High.)

Carried over from the last blog:

The Long Beach State volleyball matches are next weekend – March 19 and 20. The guys are not playing anywhere this weekend except in one of the gyms.

There’s Wahine softball tomorrow night at 5 pm & 7 pm and baseball at 6:35 pm.

On Saturday, there’s softball at 12, 2, 4 & 6. Hawai`i plays for sure at 2 pm – and depending upon the outcome of that game – will play in one of the other two games white the first pitch across the street is at 6:35 pm.

On Sunday, the softball games are 10 am and 12 nooni and Bowsball starts at 1:05 pm.

The USC series concludes on Monday at 6:35 pm.

Got a request for one baseball ticket on March 20 – anyone here want the other ticket?

Finally got all in necessary information about the Big Blue Budweiser Bullpen Tent Event. Will report on what I learned later tonight.

Good Morning Tsaikos. Had fun at the wet and windy Wahine SB games last night. Got the official explanation and terminology of the “dumb rule” for Pomai by watching the replays. “Dumb rule” = international tiebreaker to expedite play during tournaments (even though last night was not a tournament) 🙂

Saw Jake Heun at the softball game last night, along with Brashton, Ginlack and Tachibana.

Brashton looks like he’ll be faster this year and so does Heun.

Seems like the offseason condition is doing ok.

Kinda hard to keep a straight face when e-mailing “likeoof”.

    😆

    BUMBAI U LEARN!!!!!

  71. al March 11, 2010 11:20 am

whoa kazz…calling me out on this one eh?

gib arnold is/was the front runner a day or two ago. however, two things have happened since monday…

    one,
too often folks are associating gib with his dad. the real fans still have a bitter taste in their mouth and have been vocal about it. the fact that many pun alumni are on the board doesn’t help. especially when it comes to punahou students/athletes do not revere a university of hawaii education and therefore, tend to go to the mainland for their education so why should they be allowed to voice an opinion.

    two,
a lot of good candidates are surfacing. kyle smith for example. we need a coach who will come in squeaky clean and be able to have a fresh start. one with vision and ambition. sure we have to realize this could be a “stepping stone” job for any young hopeful, but, in this day and age who isn’t looking at short term and long term plans.

the gibber can talk and is trying to talk his way in, that’s my opinion. i don’t let that spiel rattle in my head. he could be a good one, but, ran aground in the usc controversy. if he were selected and did not have any success from the get go, he will be labeled in the same conversations with his dad. jd would then be blasted because he hired him.

jd knows this and i believe him to be a sharp cookie who weighs all the ingredients before baking the cake.

    so……kazz. the bet’s on bull!
(i do have to remind you that my preference of green bottles are peroni’s.)

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid March 11, 2010 11:23 am

If I was a gal playing for a team called the Trojans, I might have attitude too…

I coulda swore I saw the Trojan coach givin’ a one finger salute to the ref after that foul ball call. I think the catcher for the Trojans shoulda “protected” home plate a lil better. 😉

  87. Kazz wasn't warned about Troy Softball's COMPLAINING March 11, 2010 11:58 am

About the softball officiating. It’s not as bad as the officiating for Warrior volleyball, but it’s up there.

I can’t even remember how many times the home plate umps have lost track of the pitch count. I dunno what the deal with the scoreboard is, but it’s always behind. Coolen has embarrassed the officiating crew several times and not to do so on purpose, but because they’ve been so off.

I swear, if these guys officiated football games, we’d see 5th and long situations.

Still, not even God can do anything about 19-3, I’m on the fence about the 8th winning 2-1 win and I know that ____ from Troy was flippin out about a possible foul tip that ended up going off the wrist of Taualii so much so she really reacted bad to it. Me and Ralph heard a “click” sound but it was muted so could have gone flush against her wrist and not off the bat which would have been a louder and sharper tone. Since Taualii is a lefty, her back is to the Troy dugout and since we were sitting at 3rd we could see everything.

Still think it’s funny Troy’s coach reacted as if she was sitting at 3rd and staring right at it instead of where she actually was and that was starting at a #24.

I dunno, I like advisory search committees.. but if you’re going to seek advise in the hopes that other people can help out with establishing hiring criteria’s.. go get a agent out of the secret service office in honolulu- throw him in the committee- he’ll let you know everything you need or dont want to know about a candidate. At least you know!

  141. NorthShoreFan March 11, 2010 2:01 pm

Advisory Search Committees…good… if you know what you looking for and have some knowledge of the requirements. Would have been nice if Artie was on the committee. He was on L&L last night and it was a good show.
After the selection, I wonder if we’ll be able to get the benchmarks that the new person will be held to.
It was interesting that we find out after that BN was somewhat restricted with the kinds of athletes he could go after. Mainly academics being the goal.
JD stated that BN met 5 of the 6 benchmarks but the win/loss benchmark was the most important.
If this be the case, he needs to let the new coach know the priorities on his list of benchmarks.
Win/Loss, tournament appearance, gate receipts, etc. and if academics turn out to be one not met, is that ok? Will the coach be left alone to prioritize the benchmarks, or… meet all benchmarks, no excuses.
How about a contract based on the level of accomplishments.
Potential for a $800K if these goals are met….if not base salary will be $_ _ _K…

Sealy names Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer as an assistant. She is the director/owner of Mizuno Long Beach VB club. She played for Long Beach State as a DS, then as setter, and they beat UH. UH players of note for the club are Emily Hartong, recruit, and Melanie Griffiths, RS. Past stars included Alix Klinemann, Cynthia Barboza and Ashley Engle. Shoji recruited Alix and Cynthia, lost out to Stanford for obvious reasons.

It’s never personal Ralph. All you do is offer and some will say yes, some will say no. It really doesn’t do anyone any good to let it get personal. We never really no why someone chooses or rejects a certain school. It wastes a lot of time and energy trying to figure it out.(No worry brah, just hang loose.)

Danielle Lawrie, UDUB, senior, pitched a perfect game 3/11/2010 against Miami of Ohio. Faced 21 batters in the 7 innings, no hits, no runs, no runners lob with 14 Ks. This is the second perfect game she has tossed this season. For those of us who got to watch last season’s national poy, it was a treat and a good measure of what a top flight pitcher can do.
I hope Kaia can bring back the glory days of Brooke Wilkins and pack the stadium once again. She is on the Australian Junior national team and her pitching coach is the current pitching coach on Troy sb team.
Lawrie is also a pitcher on the Canadian National team.

  208. NorthShoreFan March 11, 2010 6:26 pm

Ralph, must be a story behind all this with Ferrell. You have a scholie in hand and you give that up to go shopping around? After your team just got to the final 4? If she wanted to go in another direction, as was explained, seems to me like she don’t know what direction she wants to go right now.
Anyhoo, really enjoyed her play here and wish her the best. I hope she finds her “direction” soon.

  209. Stretch March 11, 2010 7:21 pm

Not sure if anyone posted this but Josh Slaats is going to miss the start tomorrow against USC. He has a sore pitching elbow so Trapasso wants him to rest since the season is still early. The rotation will go back to Klein, Spangler and Sisto. Slaats might pitch Monday.

Funny folks here should mention a Spring Training T-Gate. I was going to suggest one as an alternative to the Budweiser Bullpen until I found out that no alcohol can be consumed on campus except in specific licensed locations.

One of the reasons why it was so difficult to get timely as well as accurate information about the Budweiser Bullpen Blue Tent Event promotion is that it is really not set up for a group to buy individual tickets. Rather, it is intended to be used by individual businesses to treat customers, clients & employees. In other words, the Baseball Office expected to have to deal with only one entity, one check, and one tax-deductible donation to the baseball program.

Instead, what I tried to do was get a reasonably-priced per-person cost which would include foot/beverage/specialticket/donation to the baseball program.

    I did not succeed.

Even so, I did get some information as to how it could be structured so that the first 20 people attending would get a dedicated donation to Koa Anuenue/UH Foundation.

The basic cost is $1250 for 20 people – or $62.50 per ticket. Of that figure, an estimated $30 would cover food, beverages, and a special ticket. I got two different quotes on this portion of the cost ranging from $25 to $30 per person so I went with the higher figure to be conservative. The balance, which would be tax deductible, goes the baseball program.

Even so, up to 50 people all totaled could be accommodated at the Blue Tent Event. The additional attendees would be charged $30 each with no money given to the program – only to cover the catering costs.

I thanked to two women who provided the information and decided that it was not worth my time nor effort to try to promote a two-tiered event such as this. If someone else is willing to take it on, please contact Lisa in the Baseball Office.

However, what I thought might be interesting would be a Baseball T-Gate before & after one of the Sunday afternoon games on April 4, 11 or May 2 OR before the Wahine softball double-header on Saturday, May 1, which starts at 4 pm. We could set up by Ching Field or over by the soccer field

However, see my comments above as to why this probably wouldn’t be much of a draw.

    *********

Again, does anyone want a free baseball ticket to the Saturday, March 20 game against Air Force. Protector is taking the first ticket.

We will also have a pair of volleyball tickets and a pair of baseball tickets to give away on Friday, April 2nd, and Satuirday, April 3rd – the final double-booked weekend for this season.

Please e-mail me swood at hoku dot com.

Night all – we’ll be at both softball and baseball games this weekend. Be sure to say hello – my eyesight is now so bad that I cannot idenitfy people more than five or six feet away without my binoculars.

Kobayashi is a Punahou parent who graduated from Roosevelt. He’s not a Punahou guy if you mean he went to Punahou.

The only Punahou graduate I know of in the group is Peter Ho, the banker.

The more interesting connection to several candidates is the West Coast Conference connection and in particular the St. Mary’s connection. Carl Clapp, UH Assoc. AD revamped the Bball program with the hiring of Randy Bennett. And Eran Ganot, ex-assistant of Bennet’s at St. Mary’s is one of Nash’s assistants.

Here are all the WCC/St. Mary’s possible UH candidates: Kent, let go at Oregon is an ex St. Mary’s coach; Gib Arnold was on staff at Pepperdine and LMU; Randy Bennet, St. Mary’s HC, Kyle Smith, St. Mary’s assistant. Clapp would know all of these guys.

Flower Pods are great wanting flower shaped audio system in your teen or tween’s room. Flower Pods could be easily hooked as much as your iPod, MP3 player or CD player, and are a classy accent to display. Flower Pods are shaped like flowers, with a stem and large green leaves, all made of soppy velvety material. The Flower Pods will be attached to your mattress, or desk by simply twisting them around.

I requested every teen I do know, “Should you had a gift card to spend in a toy retailer, what would you get?” I used to be surprised to seek out out that they’d need more than video games! Here’s a list of toys I love for teenagers, in no explicit order. (And no eye rolling! I promise.)
