Comeback?

Former UH running back Nate “Nasti” Ilaoa said he is training in Arizona with the hope of participating in UH’s Pro Day April 1 in Carson, Calif.

Ilaoa, who was the Philadelphia Eagles’ seventh-round pick in 2007, has not played professionally since he was a member of the Arena Football League’s Columbus Destroyers in 2007. The league folded shortly after that.

During the 2009 season, Ilaoa served as a student manager with the Warriors.

    Good luck to Nasti Nate!

Good night! I have or will find something important to do tomorrow. 😐

ST, Your #62 from yesterday –

You imply that whether or not Bob Nash is retained as coach, the results may not be much different, as a new coach will have the same players to work with (since there will be little time to recruit).

The problem with that school of thought is the following:

    1. If the players are not good enough to make much of a difference next year and the results next year are the same as this year, you will asking yourself the same questions again. The net result would be the loss of one year.

    2. If the players are under performing because of the present coaching staff, then there is a posssibiity of a turn around even if a new coach does not have time to bring in new recruits. Think of the turn around of the football team under JJ in 1999. He had essentially players recruited by FVA. Worst case, you will have given a new coach the opportunity to build for the following year (by starting the recruiting process) instead of putting it off another year.

Like a lot of others, I admired BN from the Fab Five days when I was a student and attended those games with my student activity card and wanted him to be given a shot as head coach. BN probably didn’t have the best circumstances to show what he could do. Unfortunately, life is not often fair, and I believe UH needs to move on to stop the bleeding at the gate.

Last year when everyone said that JD needed to give BN another year on his contract for recruiting purposes, I suggested that JD add a year with a “Gentlemen’s Agreement” between the two of them where BN would step aside if things didn’t improve this year. I hope that they did make an agreement, and BN does the classy thing and retires with dignity.

Couldn’t stay up to watch the second game last night against The Citadel, but I’m glad to hear that Slaats pitched a gem. Going for the series split later on today.

That said, going back to the first game yesterday, you don’t leave 12 men on base and expect to win, simple as that. I just had to cringe when the ‘Bows left the bases loaded, or two men on. The situational hitting (hopefully) will come around as the season rolls on, but excessive LOBs will definitely work against them.

After today’s game, USC is next on the docket.

Gambatte kudasai to Nate, one of UH’s best.

Good reminder to keep the academics up.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/20173/20173

It was one of the worst moments Taua could remember and the feeling was compounded because Taua was in California, suspended because of academic issues, while his team needed him on the Islands.

  9. NYUH March 6, 2010 4:59 am

UH will have an interesting defensive problem at West Point.
    http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation

He took 6-foot-10 offensive lineman Ali Villanueva and moved him to wide receiver, a position Villanueva has never played. The moved paid dividends. It not only made Villanueva the team’s top receiving threat and helped the team win five games, the most since 1996, it also proved that Ellerson wouldn’t hesitate to make any move to help his squad win.

“Obviously, that was an extreme situation,” Ellerson said of Villanueva’s position change. “Guys have to love to play the game more than they love to play a particular position. I tell guys at the beginning of the recruiting process that if they can only be happy playing left end or right tackle or whatever it is, don’t come here because I don’t care. If a guy can only play one position, that’s a bad recruit.”

  30. Stephen Tsai March 6, 2010 9:26 am

    Oldie:
    Actually, I didn’t make a statement.
    I just posed a riddle.
I’m pretty sure, given that UH probably won’t make the tournament, we all know the outcome of what’s going to happen.
I also know that if there’s a change: 1) it’s going to take a couple of weeks. JD is heading to the WAC meetings Tuesday. If he were to pull the trigger Monday, for instance, he wouldn’t even be able to get a search started for another week, if that. 2) There’s no mid-level money. What’s that? To get a recognizable replacement would take $500,000. That doesn’t include a recognizable replacement’s staff. UH doesn’t have that money. Now we can all say you have to spend money to make money. But, no, UH does not have any start-up fees. What’s more, it can’t expect any help from the basketball booster club, which is nothing like Na Koa.
All of which means: 1) it’s going to take time that won’t help this year’s recruiting. 2) Any replacement would probably be in the same $250,000 range, which rules out getting top assistants from, say, North Carolina or Kansas.
But, obviously, changes need to be made. People are just mad at the offensive style, and it’s difficult to sell tickets to angry people.
My question is can the situation be fixed internally?
Of course, I can pose all of the questions I wish. I’m pretty sure we know how this will turn out.

  31. Old Diver March 6, 2010 9:31 am

    What if?

What if Bob Nash was hired so late in his first year he lost recruits that wanted to come here. What if BN hired a big name assistant coach who decided recruiting wasn’t really his thing and up to this point has not signed a single player. What if BN at first listened to his former teammates and UH alum who recommended players from around the country who just came here for the free recruiting trip. What if the players that did sign turned out to be marginal. What if BN decided not to listen to those friends and felt he needed to evaluate each recruit on his own, and then received criticism from those very friends that said he was no longer listening to them. And what if BN heard all the criticism from them but decided it was not his style to respond. Just saying What If.

  32. chopsueyboy March 6, 2010 9:33 am

Does it cost more to go to the WAC tournament than to come home?
Are all cost already pre-paid for airfares, hotels, etc…or refundable?
Will it be an additional cost to give up planned travel schedule and come
back to Hawaii from Idaho after tonights game?

(Not attacking you personally). If a man actually can be a fair and impartial judge of his right and wrong, I can agree with “I never apologize unless I think I am wrong…”. But the actualy message is sent in the phrase, “…if you don’t like it you can leave…”. Such a man will be forever trying to figure out why he can’t have a positive, happy relationship. Well, unless, he a masochist and she’s a sadist. That might work!

Kazz – ECU signed at least 2 more local girls for next year; both from Mililani. It’s good for them because I doubt if UH would have offered them. IMO, ECU is not signing the top local girls which UH would be in competition for.

ST – did Coolen go after Mililani’s Senas? She’s going all the way to Florida State.

Re-UH athletic director needs to make a quick decision

In regards to Coach Nash’s status I think it’s better to make a decisive decision quickly than to let it linger on.

Spare the agony. Spare the melodrama. Spare I-have-to-wait-to-the-end-of-the-season-in making-a-decision.

By now, hopefully, JD has a running account of all the data he needs. There’s no need to make additional extrapolations in deciding Coach Nash’s fate and having a decision linger on.

I think Coach Nash would agree on this.

No one is deserving of a slow burn. Especially Coach Nash. He should be spared of this grief. A quick decision does.

There’s two schools of thought here.

A quick decision by JD in retaining Coach Nash would be a vote of confidence. And an endorsement. This is one way of looking at it.

Secondly, a decision in not in keeping Coach Nash, if made quickly, would spare Coach Nash the agony of having to wait out his fate. A person of Coach Nash’s stature is deserving of this. This is another way of looking at it.

A long waited ordeal, or process, by JD wouldn’t be showing any empathy one way or the other. And I hope JD is wise enough in not having this linger on.

The balls in JD’s court, hopefully he doesn’t turn it over. A lengthy decision would put a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.I hope JD realizes this.

    wafan,

Yep, by 15 minutes. They had the Pentagon Metro station closed most of Friday, so the rush-hour commute was kinda screwy, especially for the folks who live way out in the suburbs and commute to the Pentagon by commuter bus.

  80. al March 6, 2010 2:52 pm

    regarding bob nash…

one important factor that has not yet been observed is that during the early signing period nash and company were only able to secure one commitment. that of a relatively unknown guard.

if he had a bevy of blue chip players in the fold it would make it easy to say okay one more year, however, in this case the converse may now apply.

  81. al March 6, 2010 2:59 pm

    tip my cap to…

charlie wade and the vb warriors for solving the 7’2″ obstacle and his teammates. great win. on to usc!

trap and the bball bows for coming back to even up the series. nice to see the bats wake up. lost in the shuffle was trap’s cognizance to shake up the lineup which proved very successful. also, good to see the continued progress by josh slaats and the long awaited comeback by spangler.

  82. al March 6, 2010 3:02 pm

pomai…dave shoji and charlie wade should not be watching their own shadows. i believe both have done well.

trap is showing some life at the les. he has been making some good tough decisions. also, the infusion of local talent has helped inspire a better crowd. he’ll also bring in some really good local kids again next year. i think he gets it now.

Coach Bob’s era at Manoa needs to come to an end. Both parties need to work on the exit as Bob is deserving of a gracious ending, but make no mistake, closure is needed.

  108. COPO March 6, 2010 6:23 pm

Nasty Nate Ilaoa, the best running back to ever play at UH, get it done at the Pro day and beyond!

    ST #30,

Sorry, I did not mean to put words in your mouth. We all know that you are more than capable of speaking for yourself. My apologies.

    anonymous #74,

I agree. Whatever the decision, it should be done quickly. Hopefully, a majority of the fans will support JD whether he retains BN or decides to move in another direction.

I wasn’t thinking in those terms, I was thinking of what stress there is in being a head coach in these economic times, having to do with less in almost every department(budget), and still put together a winning program, it has to be tough.

  114. Pomai March 6, 2010 9:06 pm

Softball has some really stupid rules!!!!!!

Nice to see the Wahine take care of business with ECU and despite our errors we held our own against the top team in the land losing 1-0 to Udub in eight innings.

    Proud of Ricketts tonight.

    Tomorrow is a new day!!!

  116. Ralph March 6, 2010 9:10 pm

yup excellent pitching from both ladies, unfortunately we were on the short end but tomorrow the sun rises and we shall battle UDUB again.

Study found that *third-hand* smoke (the residue from second-hand smoke) poses a danger to babies and toddlers. Scientists have know for years that tobacco smoke sticks to surfaces, but they didn’t realize that kids playing on the ground or picking up toys on the ground and sticking them into their mouths (like all toddlers do) can cause cancer. Even smoking outside does not solve the problem because nicotine residues stick to the smoker’s skin and clothing and spreads third-hand smoke everywhere inside the home.

Study found that people who have Botox treatments take longer to process angry or sad statements. They think that the problem is due to the lack of facial feedback–since Botox prevents patients from frowning, they cannot perceive angry or sad feelings as well.

10-year study of 4.9 million births in the 90s found a link between the mother’s age and autism. Surprisingly, the father’s age only played a factor when the man was over 40 and the woman was under 30–once a woman was over 30, the autism chances were raised so high that the age of the father did not matter.

Researchers have been trying for years to figure out the cause of stuttering, with all kinds of theories proposed..now, they appear to have isolated three genetic mutations in the brain cells of people who stutter. This suggests that genes could be responsible for stuttering.

To try to win the Westminster Dog Show, owners can spend more than $300k per year for 2 to 3 years to build momentum and a reputation! The determined (and wealthy) dog owners put out money for time-consuming and expensive dog show competitions (150 dog show a year!) and *lots* of ads in dog publications ($100k per year in ads!), plus other expenses such as travel and professional handler fees.

Study found that people with mild to severe depression would do about as well taking a *placebo* instead of an antidepressant, suggesting that doctors suggest alternative treatments instead of prescribing antidepressants. People diagnosed with very severe depression were found to benefit much more from antidepressants instead of placebos.

76.1% of Americans get to work by driving alone, with only 10.4% carpooling and 4.9% taking public transportation. On average, Americans spend 50.6 minutes commuting each day, with people in New York state spending 63 minutes per day commuting. I’m lucky–my commute is to walk upstairs to my office.

Winners play at 4 pm for the championship, should be UH vs UDUB. Lawrie credited with 15 Ks tonight. Too many games in which UH batters have struck out in double digits against successful programs. UH batters really feast on programs with a so so pitching staff, many games with multiple home runs, now we got to play consistent ball, with good defense, move the runners in scoring position and get clutch hits. We’re falling in the Rpi rankings.

  128. Ralph March 6, 2010 9:50 pm

JD is sayinga to himself, whew, saved money on travel expense to the WAC tournament and I don’t have GEICO. chawan will have a lot of free time in the casinos without the bows in the tournament.

Great footage of Colt & company giving the kids some pointers. The people at Barefoot are to be commended for sponsoring such a valuable event. It really was all about the youngsters having fun playing a little football with some frenz.
