It's complicated; d1島 wins baseball tickets

Avis has selected d1島 as the winner of six tickets to Saturday’s UH-USC baseball game.

Congrats. I’ll leave the tickets in your name at Will Call.

In the real world, a person sees a job posting, sends in an application, goes through the interview process, and then waits for an answer.

But job-hunting in college basketball, in Facebook-status parlance, is “complicated.”

Some have their name “leaked” as being a candidate, as was the case with Henry Bibby a few years ago, just to get their name circulated. Most use third parties — other coaches, representatives — to test their chances. A head coach, for instance, would use a third party as a shield of deniability with a current employer.

The search for the next UH basketball coach will be no different. And it is why the key players will be representatives such as brothers David Pump and Dana Pump. The Pump brothers are so-called grass-root workers who put on scouting camps and combines, and work out shoe and merchandise contracts for coaches and schools.

The Pump brothers helped secure a UH coaching job for Scott Rigot, and were instrumental in the Rainbows’ recruitment of  Predrag Savovic. They also serve as headhunters for schools and coaches, such as Gib Arnold, who is expected to be a candidate for the UH job. Arnold has been one of the Pump brothers’ clients for several years.

The UH opening will attract many coaches. There just might not be traceable evidence of their interest.

Scanning the members of the advisory committee assisting in the basketball coach’s search, an observer noted, many have ties to Punahou School. Hmmm …

Don’t forget to read Dayton Morinaga’s excellent story on his one-on-one interview with Bob Nash:

On their own, UH football players have been conducting 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills

Yesterday, linebacker Brashton Satele participated.

Satele still has not received a ruling on his appeal for a medical hardship that would allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010. But his decision to return from Arizona, where he had been training, and to participate in full UH workouts indicates his optimism in his case. By the way, Satele, who already has earned a bachelor’s degree, is taking online classes.

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Keeping the fingers crossed for a favorable ruling for Brashton. Seems like common sense that he’d get the approval but I read about a PAC 10 player the other day that seemed to have a slam dunk case that got denied. You never know with the NCAA.

A little over a week until March Madness. Taking time off from work the first two days to watch the early games.

I still can’t get over how big Vince Manuwai looked in that picture that Tsai posted the other day. His upper body looked huge. I wonder if it was an optical illusion. Maybe Stephen Tsai can tell us if he got bigger or not.

  14. Pride. March 10, 2010 3:38 am

Could the men’s basketball team use their own strength and conditioning coach? How much would that cost if they don’t have one already?

  15. Pride. March 10, 2010 3:46 am

If Hawaii can’t get the best talent to play basketball in Hawaii? Does that mean that we cannot be the best conditioned? Or how about the most disciplined? Maybe the most fudamentally sound? The best shooting team? Does it take superior talent to be good shooters? How’s about the team with the highest basketball I.Q. If Hawaii, hands down is the hardest place to recruit to, why don’t we recruit what we can, and be the best that we can with whatever it is that we have left to build on?

  16. Pride. March 10, 2010 3:46 am

Sounds a little too simplistic of course.

  17. RainbowCliff March 10, 2010 3:53 am

Good morning Tsaiko Nation, the thought for the day is to smile and spread good cheer to one another. Sports that we watch or play is a cosmopolitan of life in it self ONLY because we love the excitement of competition and idolize the athlete who can do tremendous things with their bodies as they have practice hard to accomplish athletic skills in their perspective sport to make them confident in their abilities and rise to occasions that demands for them to be mentally tough during pressure situations.

Playing for Hawaii is a unique experience for ANY athlete as it is the ONLY game in town and with that you are watched, idolize and cheer by the most adoring fans who will support you because of their “LOVE” they have for you playing for their local team. The University is a “WONDERFUL” educational institution with outstanding professors as still today I am so GRATEFUL that I graduated with that degree as a scholarship student athlete and have been able for 27 years to keep myself employed with every job interview I have been on the interviewer ALWAYS look at me in great surprise when they see I am a GRADUATE from the University OF Hawaii !

I will be having the HONOR on the 27th of this month in endorsing accepted California H.S. students to attend the University and answering any questions the students or parents have coming to UH being far away from home and experiencing college as a 17 or 18 year old freshmen. I look forward to this part as I can relate so well to it as 34 years ago I was feeling what they feel anxious to get on their own, go to a GREAT school and live with excitement knowing Hawaii will be my way of life and enrich me with wondeful cultural of people. 200 incoming freshmen are expected which includes parents, relatives and close friends.

Will have my ALOHA on and ready to seal the deal with incoming HS California students ready to become a WARRIOR and a BOW !

Have a GREAT day Tsaiko Nation and ALWAYS remember “simply the best, better then all the rest” !

  18. Pride. March 10, 2010 4:01 am

RainbowCliff, thanks for oyur awesome support.

  19. RainbowCliff March 10, 2010 4:25 am

Pride: Hawaii CAN get the best athletes for basketball as the HEAD man who leads the program MUST have a LOVE for the Islands, it’s GREAT fan support and OUTSTANDING athletic facilities with a BEAUTIFUL upper campus educational institution. Condition, disciplined, fundamentally sound and high IQ has always been a factor for Rainbow Basketball of past and can be today IF former athletes can be involve in some capacity scouting and refering potential athletes to dawn the tapa green and white.

The former athletic alumni is HUGHE all over the United States and their best attribute is not so much of ‘MONEY’ but establishing relationships over the years with present coaches, athletes and parents who look up to MANY of us and trust our opinions because we made it, have decent jobs, family oriented and hold our selves in the highest esteem.

This base alone is the crutch of the whole problem as NCAA infraction of not allowing ANY former player to talk on behalf of their University or experience in their athletic sport to that interested athlete keeps Hawaii from really getting the cream of the crop. Alumni recruit students to Hawaii academically why it cannot athletically as this is a MAJOR stumbling block and waste of solid good ex- Hawaii athletes who will do it in a HEART BEAT if allowed to do it !

If you are relying on just your paid coaches or assitance they are limited being so far away as we are right here spread out all over the United States, willing and able to help in recommending players, scouting opposing teams and assuring parents that your child will be safe in paradise as well as playing for a GREAT team that is supported by tremendous fans !

That kind sir is what needed for ALL of Hawaii athletics to be successful the involvment of former athletes who can help and want to HELP !

  20. RainbowCliff March 10, 2010 4:40 am

Pride kind sir, I “THANK YOU” for your loyal support over the years and being a TREMENDOUS fan to Hawaii athletics. It is you and ALL the bloggers who post you have this ‘COMPASSION’ for Hawaii and want to see the teams be successful and represent the Islands with decency, pride and respect.

This dedication you have has ALWAYS been with me as I am so grateful for my experience going to school at UH and playing as a BOW with my compassion to “give back” to you GREAT folks as you gave me sooooo much more !

Once a BOW, always a BOW with a determination to support Hawaii athletics to the best of my ability and support the upper campus when called upon with out NO questions asked.

Have a GREAT morning Mr. Pride and continue to be the GREATEST fan in the world that supports the “RAINBOW WARRIORS” as I will always do for my entire “LIFE” !

  21. RainbowCliff March 10, 2010 4:47 am

Have a TREMENDOUS morning Tsaiko Nation as I am off to enjoy LA sunshine and spread good cheer among the many angelinos that I will see today. Remember to be kind, sincere and happy to GOD’S WONDERFUL PEOPLE and hug a kekei for me as they are adorable and precious with so much innocent and love they give growing up and carrying on your GREAT polynesian cultures and tradition. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/355585-why-do-teams-get-an-addition-game-for-playing-at-hawaii

For this reason Hawaii was not really welcomed with open arms to Division I athletics. The NCAA knew this and made an exception to the normal scheduling rules that would enable Hawaii to offer something in return to those schools making the trip to the islands. It is defined in the NCAA Rulebook as the following:

Rule 17.28.2 States Alaska/Hawaii, Additional Football Contest. Member institutions located in Alaska and Hawaii shall be permitted to exceed, by one, the maximum number of football contests permitted under Bylaw 17.9.5.1 but otherwise shall conform to the same maximum number of contests and dates of competition permitted other members of the Association.

Re: UH Bkb, I like Andy Katz’ suggestion of St. Mary’s assistant Kyle Smith as a possible Nash replacement. The Aussie connection could certainly help, as it has for the women’s team. And the Australian system has produced some pretty good talent. Think of what sort of impact Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills (a Smith recruit) or even Nathan Jawai or A.J. Ogilvy might have had on the team… Of course, I don’t think Smith has any Punahou connections.

    Speaking of complicated….

Very interesting reading Dayton Morinaga’s article this morning. It seems there is always another side to every story.

  28. Manoa March 10, 2010 5:59 am

    15 Pride, makes sense.

The problem with an uptempo offense is that it does take several top recruits to put 5 guys on the floor plus a bench with the speed and athleticism to beat another team up and down the court, pass just two times and shoot the lights out. Then press and rebound in order to get the fast break going to beat the other team down court.

We saw Riley and other coaches, like Majerus and John Thompson, beat these uptempo teams by forcing them to play half court, blocking out the rebounds, beating the press, and getting a lead and holding the ball. You need to be very athletic to control the tempo and keep it on fast.

  29. Mike March 10, 2010 6:04 am

Good points about playing up-tempo. Always chuckle whenever a new coach, college or NBA, comes in and talks about their plan to pick up the tempo and get more fast-break points. All it takes is a week of really ugly ball for the pace to correct itself to the talent. Then again, it also takes skilled, intelligent players to execute in the half court — and those aren’t easy to come by either.

  30. Mike March 10, 2010 6:06 am

Great piece by Dayton this morning.

Fun should be part of anyone’s job and it truly helps stabilize your health.

JD, whomever you select as the next mbb coach, he will also be my coach for the rainbows.

With Coach Sellito leaving HPU, maybe Bob could re-start his coaching career there.

Without any knowledge aside from what I read it still seems apparent that Jarrin and possibly Cameron would be the top two candidates. Both young, jarrin has the deeper “next level” experience and contacts (a help in recruiting) and Cameron has the record of taking a blip on the screen and made it a bigger blot.

Bob Nash has always been a class act. Great stories by Dayton Morinaga.

Having a Punahou background is not an “open sesame” as some think – but it doesn’t hurt.

Having a collegiate and recruiting background as a potential coach is going to be an asset. Having a background in the NBA may also aid in the recruiting process. Being young and hungry without any of that type of background may turn out to be a long learning process for a potential head coach.

  67. Old School Dave March 10, 2010 8:09 am

I hope JD can fend off the “Punahou” influence in the MBB Selection process, if it is indeed true. Always hire someone who is currently employed would be a good guide. JMHO.

Adding to SailorBlue’s invitation to watch the Marine Corps Color Detachment perform. The team is actually on island doing their thing at some of the high schools during the week.

The Silent Drill team is part of the visiting group. All the Marine Corps ads on TV and on Utube feature these guys tossing those rifles around like Matty Mattels. Just don’t get in the way of one ’cause dey got bayonets fixed to the muzzels! Yikes!

I highly doubt that there is some kind of Punahou conspiracy to get Gib Arnold the job. He obviously has some fans but JD is not going to paint himself into a corner like that. If Arnold gets the job it isn’t going to be because there are a bunch of people with Punahou “connections” on the advisory committee.

Look at Punahou’s current head BB coach. Wouldn’t you think that the great Punahou conspiracy would be more concerned with getting someone with Punahou “connections” into the job at Punahou? Why would they care about the UH job? It isn’t like UH has had a long line of Punahou BB players. Doesn’t make any sense.

There are certainly coaches at Punahou like Ane who have strong Punahou family history, but Alika Smith was a great pickup for Punahou — regardless of Punahou connections. The AD at Punahou also has no previous connection to the school.

Arnold may be the best choice in terms of interested candidates. You would suspect that since he is evidently currently unemployed he may be highly motivated. I still think that Akana, if interested, would be the more interesting choice.

  78. Kekoa March 10, 2010 8:49 am

We all need to continue spreading the word about the golf tournament that will benefit Doris Sullivan’s PIAA.

Just look at what she’s done to help place our student-athletes in colleges and universities around the country!

  81. Kazz March 10, 2010 8:59 am

    Troy’s softball team looks like a handful afterall… 🙁

Coach Coolen said yesterday on the Sports Animals that their pitcher has WAY more strikeouts than games played, pretty much admitting that Troy’s pitcher is a … (ahem)… “beast”. Solid enough hitting as the team is averaging just under .300 and they have several players hitting well above .300. Defensive stats show Troy is stingy as heck and this does not bode well for us.

While it’s easy to assume outfielders hate playing against the Wahine, opposing infielders may continue to drool at the opportunity to snuff us out as we don’t have much in the way of stolen bases (sans pressure on opposing teams). Troy seems to have some girls that can run too, which doesn’t work in our favor either if the infield defense hasn’t settled down since Sunday.

The balancing act remains. In the beginning of the season, hitting started out slow and infield play was sufficient, now, as the competition got tougher, it’s flipped a bit and the fragile nature of the infielders with communication and fundamental breakdowns came to the surface.

With better focus on this area and consistency at the plate combined with added running pressure to Troy, it should be a good night for the Wahine.

Without the offensive pressure from base runners and with a repeat of the defensive breakdowns our pitching staff may be shaken and their own game could be thrown off, way off.

Sounds like a lot to do, but for this team not really. As the old saying goes, “the potential is there, just gotta make it happen”. Coach Coolen said that the good teams visualize what they need to do to win and then they just play the game to see what the score was. Well, we’re not there yet, but that’s a nice blueprint to have as WAC competition is a few weeks away.

    GO BOWS!!!

  82. RupertDaStupert March 10, 2010 9:03 am

Winning is a strange bird. Red Rocha had five players who were not All-American blue chippers. Divided non would have been an impact Division 1 player with the exception of Nash. But united they were magic. Remember Tom Henderson? Even he could not make the basketball team great. Or A.C. Carter, or Roderick Fleming. It takes all five to play their part. Beavis and Butthead could have coached the fabulous five and made them winners. Their teamwork was something no great coach or mediocre coach could have improved upon. So swell and okay if we can get a class A coach. But not even a great coach can win without getting that magic ensemble who can play together and punish the opponent. Sometimes you have to be lucky. Sometimes you can teach work in progress players into winners. But getting them to even want to come in the middle of the Pacific is a miracle. We came very close to recruiting Australian 7 footer Luc Longley. But close is not enough. Definitely get a good Australia connection. More from Europe and Canada.

Okay – I’ll bite – who is Laura Pennington? Advertiser staffer? Back0in-the-day Wahine sports star?

Al: I came across the same information after doing a Google search right before I went to bed aand posted it on today’s blog. I probably wouldn’t have even thought about the name if Kazz hadn’t raised the issue plus I’d just seen a reference to Michael Vuck last weekend. Thanks for taking the effort.

We have a pair of basketball tickets for Saturday, March 20, to give away because we’ll be at the volleyball match that evening. If you’d like one or both, please send me an e-mail with your real name, blog name, and contact info including a day phone number or cell phone number.

jm2375. You can pick up the volleyball tix Saturday or Sunday morning. Please call so that we can lock down a day& time

Man all I remember about Arnold is Frank Arnold and what a disaster he was at UH. Guess you can’t hold that against the son!
But I agree with what Riley is saying in that we need to bring in someone who has head coaching experience. If Gib or Jarinn are interested in UH, let them start as assistants. In fact, we probably couldn’t get two better assistants than those guys.
Oh, heard Don Robbs say on the radio this morning Reggie Theus was “extremely disliked” at New Mexico State and that he’s not a candidate for UH.
    Extremely disliked. Geez.

I think it’s an insult to Red Rocha, saying Beavis and Butthead could have coached the Fab Five and they’d still win.

I just want a coach that can teach his team how to break a press.

  93. RupertDaStupert March 10, 2010 9:24 am

No insult to Red Rocha. He was a great coach years before the fab five and a very good coach for the old ABA Hawaii Chiefs. And Red was one of the finest human beings who ever lived.

Then again, we might not be able to cover it.
    Early deadlines tonight.
    And it’s a TV doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.

  98. spamworld March 10, 2010 10:26 am

Its interesting to me that there is so much Punahou influence in this
I hope they not only will be donating money to buy out Nash(very sad situation) and select his replacement.
But I hope some of them will step up to donate money to improve the UH facilities.

  99. Kazz March 10, 2010 10:26 am

Hawaii Athletics has Wahine Basketball vs Fresno State as TBA for the time.

Not sure what it is, but GODSPEED to the Rainbow Wahine. It has been an up and down experience for me as well as many new consistent supporters of the program to see the VAST changes in attitude and effort and in ATTENDANCE this past season. PLENTY of Xs and Os to work on for the returning players and plenty to see from Coach Dana in the upcoming seasons as we are still trying to get a feel for her vision while we all got a good “taste” of it this year.

Next season I think we should expect a significant improvement as we work up the conference standings considering the core returners.

Not much in the way of scholarships coming in next season, but with losing THREE guards after 2010-2011, the 2011-2012 season will be Coach Dana’s 3rd and by then we should have a clear picture of what the Wahine program will shape up to be under Coach Dana.

  104. Old School Dave March 10, 2010 10:53 am

Gib Arnold: I’m maybe a little more slippers and T-shirt, chili and rice at Zippy’s.” Hmmm…..then why did he not remain in Hawaii and play for UH after signing a NLI and instead go to ASU with his Dad? Being the “trendy favorite” doesn’t sound like a good reason to go with a candidate, either.

Jim Donovan needs to contact and at least make a pitch to Seattle University’s Cameron Dollar. Jump on a plane and meet with him or fly him out here. I’ll put my dollar on him. Sorry, had to say that 🙂

Also need to hire a coach whose family will enjoy living here in Hawaii. UH has had its share of athletic coaches who hated living in Hawaii and couldn’t wait to jump back on a plane to the mainland. Hard for players to respect coaches like that.

  105. expat March 10, 2010 10:53 am

I am at a loss to see how the BB advisory committee is stacked with Punahou connections… Peter Ho went to Punahou; Kobayashi went to Roosevelt; Nishizaki don’t know but not Punahou. Same for Sacharski and Schroeder — don’t know but I don’t think they went to Punahou. Now, are the connections that some of their kids or spouses went to Punahou? They all do have UH connections though. Sheesh. What is with the conspiracies? Could be a Roosevelt conspiracy what with Kobayashi and then Tsai stirring the waters.

    FSU 74-40 with 12.57 minutes to go…

  109. Manoa March 10, 2010 11:10 am

The fact is that talent and size count in basketball probably more than any other sport– there are only 5 players on the court for each team. No amount of “coaching” can make up for a team with a lot less talent.

Both the mens and womens teams are lacking in talent.

Ever go to the Iolani tournament or other venues where top high school teams play Hawaii’s best? It’s a complete mismatch. It’s not quite that bad because we recruit from out of state, but in the final analysis, that is it– Dana and the new men’s coach need better players or they have no chance. If they don’t get them, the results will be like this year no matter how hard they try.

Only a big infusion of talent will get us just to the level of respectability.

  112. Ralph March 10, 2010 11:26 am

I agree with you Manoa, we need D1 talent in both mbb and wbb, we don’t have them at this time. But we need coaches who recognizes the fact that we don’t have bonafide D1 talent on the current team and he needs to up the talent level. We seem to get the same kind and level of players, is it because we have the same recruiter in Jackson Wheeler who scours the same well once too often like Weatherford JUCO and a few others in the PNW. We have had a occasional D1 player come out of these JUCO but not everyone that they hype to UH were great skill players. Even the Iowa CC coach called Kurtz a good one with a big upside in learning offensive skills, he hardly played on a losing team. At 7’0 he couldn’t earn playing time on a team that won 10 games all season, laughable recruiting.

    Happy birthday, Laura Pennington!

  114. Derek March 10, 2010 11:50 am

The name Arnold conjures some bad thoughts as far as UH basketball is concerned. One’s enough for me. Like I said, the #1 priority for a basketball coach for us is demonstrated proven recruitment for Division I talent and an eye for evaluating Division I talent. The applicant’s should show “who” did they actually primarily recruit for their schools and name the players recruited. Example, if Cameron Dollar was actually the principle person that got Brandon Roy for UW and also John Brocman then you could say he did a pretty good job in getting some good recruits. Also, the applicants showed show where the coach will recruit and what their connections are.

The fact that Gib Arnold went to Punahou and that he was a good high school player in high school means nothing to me. It doen’t mean anything as far as can he be a good head basketball coach at a Division I level. When Bob Nash was hired I was skeptical to be the head man. First of all, he was a long time assistant. If he was head coach material I think he would have been on a fast track to be a head coach much much earlier. I can’t think of any major recruit that Bob Nash got for UH. Mostly, I think most of the top players UH got was because of Jackson Wheeler and maybe Scott Rigot and/or Jaime Dixon when they were assistants for Riley Wallace. Yeah, Nash is a good man and he is beloved and he was a loyal soldier. That’s the problem. He wasn’t fiesty and we wasn’t tough enough. The team mirrored the coach. The team played soft and did not scratch and fight or everything. Even Artie Wilson alluded to this on his show. Maybe Nash was the popular choise at the time Wallace left, but 3 years have shown that it was not the right choice. We haven’t recruited well the last 3 years and that’s why we are now. I love basketball. I played it in high school, I played it in the Army, and I played it pick up games even w/ Dwight Holiday. I can’t play it anymore because of my heart condition. The next best thing for me is to watch basketball (high school tournament, college ball, and the NBA). I refuse to go to a UH game because it is just too frustrating to watch. But I watch all the games I can on KFVE or pay per view. I long for the day when UH basketball is exciting again and can go to the big dance. Don’t hire a nice guy…hire somebody who can recruit and can sell the program on a vision toward excellence.

  115. PowderPuff March 10, 2010 11:56 am

  121. Richie March 10, 2010 12:33 pm

With an observer noting all of the ties on the selection committee to Punahou as stated in ST’s comments above, with Gib Arnold leaving USC this week and becoming available, and with another comment about people with “Punahou connections” contributing $100,000 to Coach Nash’s buy-out of the last year of his contract, it has to make you wonder if Gib Arnold was a done deal even before the official decision was made to remove Coach Nash. We’ll have to see if he is ultimately selected.

By the way, why is the contributor list not public record at a public university?

FSU 83-55, season ends for Na Wahine. FSU shot 62.1% in the first half, too big a hole to dig out of in the second half to be competitive with the #1 WAC team. Coach Dana needs to stay up there and start recruiting for next season, if she doesn’t have but one scholarship, make room, evaluate everyone on the current team and make the tough call, don’t renew everyone.

I don’t think hiring an assistant coach who was released after five years at another school is a very good resume’ for being hired at UH; regardless his so-called, “island ties.” Bottom line being, why would he be released if he was doing well with the school after five years….I don’t think sooooo!!

  172. RainbowCliff March 10, 2010 3:26 pm

Before you start shouting out Cameron Dollar you need to know the TRUE deal with him. The reason he left Washington was because he was under suspension for making phone calls to recruits during the dead period and scheduling visitation for the many players you mention above illegally that Mr. Dollar had a hand in recruiting.

Would not fit in Hawaii as he couldn’t adapt to the culture and he can’t be trusted in staying in the guidelines and rules of the NCAA. Has not had enough experience as a head coach and his only claim to fame was when Tyus Edney got hurt he played a stellar point guard game and helped UCLA to win the NCAA Championship.

Been tagging along as Lorenzo Romar pick his entire playing and coaching career as he got the job at Seattle only because Lorenzo convince the AD that Mr. Dollar made a mistake as the Washington AD at the time saw his violations blatant and out of control in which she stated he could not continue to be top assistant to Coach Romar and his Huskies.

An aggressive “YOUNG” guy who really is looking for the BIG picture and allowing him to Coach Hawaii will be a BIG mistake ! No care or understanding for the aloha spirit but a UCLA spoil player who is trying to find his lime light once again. A “wrinkle” dollar !

  182. Bulla March 10, 2010 3:50 pm

    DUFFER,

    you pregnant? haha

  183. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2010 3:51 pm

    Back to the basketball search.
There seems to be a great push for Gib Arnold, and a lot of the pushing is coming from, as we hear it, people with Punahou ties.
    Very interesting.
I think he’s just too controversial of a pick.
I don’t get a vote, but my choices are Kyle Smith or Jarinn Akana.

  184. postmanke March 10, 2010 3:52 pm

173 – I agree with you about Dollar..

The guy wins a big game ealry in the season on espn and everyone gets excited.. He’s going to be a good one, but you agree with you about the fit..

Not too sure Gib is squeaky clean in the area of recruiting as well.. interesting how this will play out.

  185. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2010 3:52 pm

    … or Ernie Kent.

  186. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2010 3:52 pm

    … Or Nolan Richardson.

  187. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2010 3:52 pm

Otherwise…hamburger, onions, celery, tomato, tomato paste, italian seasoning, sugar, red wine, white pepper, bay leaves…all in one pot and simmer for the whole day, put on noodles and serve with grated parmesan cheese (fresh kind)…

  188. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2010 3:55 pm

    … or Coach Carter

  189. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2010 3:56 pm

Why get one advisory group of non-basketball peoples? Hows about… Artie, ST, Al, Kazz, Ralph..in other words people with some mean passion for da program?

  190. wafan March 10, 2010 3:58 pm

We served a cheater spaghetti with meatballs.

Start with the bottled stuff in a crockpot. Add the Kirkland meatballs. Simmer for an hour or two before serving over pasta. Inexpensive and tasty.

  191. OTTO March 10, 2010 4:00 pm

If you want meat sauce, saute lean ground beef, onions, add a packet of Lawry’s spagetti sauce mix, add in tomato sauce (check the instructions… might be one can tomato paste and then one can tomato sauce – I forget)… simmer. done.

Or buy one bottle Ragu… and jazz it up with ground beef, or italian sausage and onions, etc….

  192. wafan March 10, 2010 4:01 pm

With all of the business people on the advisory committee does this mean the bottom-line will be the primary focus for mbb?

Is the bottom-line defined as the win/loss record as alluded by JD regarding Nash? It does make some sense since it does affect the financial bottom-line.

  193. Bulla March 10, 2010 4:02 pm

    ST

check your email, you need help for sunday dinner? how many coming?

  194. Pomai March 10, 2010 4:04 pm

Does anyone know if Jarinn Akana is even interested in the job? Don’t like this people with Punahou ties thing, hey I don’t mind them throwing a name out there just like all of us, but to use $$$$$ to get their man, not good.. JD don’t make a mistake and let the $$$$$ influence you.

  195. BigIslandkurt March 10, 2010 4:07 pm

Prego makes one good sauce, but we all know that no matter what bottled or can sauce you use, you gotta still doctor it up with more tomato paste, fresh onion, garlic and a teenie tiny bit of sugar.

Gunfunnit, now I stay ono for spaghetti. There goes the low carb thing.

    BIK

  196. Pomai March 10, 2010 4:07 pm

We’re having a fund-raising spaghetti dinner Sunday, and unfortunately, our chef can’t make it.
    Anyone know of good recipes?
    Anyone free Sunday evening?

Not my favorite vegetable, but maybe NorthShoreFan can help…and he can do karaoke at the same time. Tsinging chef. ST–give him a call. 👿

  199. Stephen Tsai March 10, 2010 4:08 pm

    OK, I’m hungry now.
    Old Spaghetti Factory, anyone?

  203. sjmacro March 10, 2010 4:32 pm

Tsai: you trying to hold a Iron Chef/Taste of Honolulu? Secret ingredient spaghetti ? 🙂 I with Wafan #191, made a variation today. Kirkland/Costco meatballs come in 6 lb bags and you can get tomato sauce and paste in gallon size, pasta in 10 lb pkgs? Have fun 🙂

Hey! We hit 200 today! Yipee skipee!

  206. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 4:53 pm

What the hell? As a coach I wouldn’t make it past the 1st half of the first game.

Now if they paid some to yell at the other team from the UH bench then I’d have to beat out Ajoe or Chawan for that.

PowderPuff is not allowed to apply. I mean there are children present at UH games.

  207. st March 10, 2010 4:57 pm

    Happy birthday, Laura Pennington!

  208. Old School Dave March 10, 2010 4:59 pm

Here’s an idea. How about making an offer to Stew Morrill of USU? Worst thing he can say is “no.” Randy Rahe from Weber State (20-9, Big Sky Champs, NCAA bid) may be worth a look, also.

  209. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 5:03 pm

Clouds NE of thw softball stadium suggest a dry-ish night.

Well… We know how that goes.

Rainbowtique making a more pro-active approach by constantly setting up their trailer outside the baseball and now the softball stadium… Interesting but ppl I talk to usually want stuff that the trailer doesn’t have.

Looks like Kaia Parnaby will start the first game at least.

  210. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 5:07 pm

Some Troy fans just bought some UH shirts and seat cushions.

    Mahalo!!!!

  215. Slugger March 10, 2010 5:35 pm

It is raining in town & up Manoa way…but not hard enough so you can’t see the valley. Wear rain gear to the game.

  216. Slugger March 10, 2010 5:36 pm

There’s a rainbow over UH campus.

    Go Wahine!

  217. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2010 5:44 pm

Off Topic..Legislature going after unlicensed vets..mainly guys who clip dog ears? Not sure how big of a problem this is but what about the budget and economy and schools and health care?
Gunfunit, got to get them to focus!

  218. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2010 5:47 pm

Watching the tv and the field looks really sticky! If it stop raining, could turn out to be ok but might be a long night if it doesn’t.

    GO WAHINE!

    SLOPPY!….SLOPPY!

  222. BigIslandkurt March 10, 2010 5:58 pm

mctruck……I, like many a Tsaiko like to believe that we were chefs in another life! For anyone who has survived being on a limited budget while in college, you probably got really good at doctoring up spaghetti. shoot, you got pretty good at doctoring a lot of things.

    BIK

  223. BigIslandkurt March 10, 2010 5:59 pm

You don’t know what you got until it’s gone. I miss Hari’s Kitchen. My friend’s mom would record all the shows and send it to us when we were in college in Colorado. We’d laugh for hours!!! But there was some good food being cooked up.

Another local classic for folks in HIlo was UH-Hilo Focus on Agriculture with Jack Fujii. It was absolutely classic!

    BIK

  224. duffer (iPhone) March 10, 2010 6:03 pm

    @ BIK

I watched that cooking show with Jack Fujii. Always wishing I was there to eat all that good food! 🙂

  225. A-House March 10, 2010 7:00 pm

Ugly game at UH – Wahine up 12 -1.

Very disappointed in the Troy coach who, after arguing a “balk or off-mound” against her pitcher, tells the 1st base ump that “we were warned about officiating before we left”. It was so loud that Papa Leahy heard it in the grand stands.

This after her players committed 2 errors and much difficulty fielding ground balls giving UH a 6 -1 lead with one out and 2 runners on base.

Perhaps she should have talked to her pitcher and reminded her to keep a foot on the “rubber”. And, called a time out to gather her infield to settle them down.

Clearly a case of NO CLASS!!! But, not unexpected as many visiting coaches from the mainland in many sports say the same thing – especially the BIG 10 in football – when they LOSE

  226. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 7:05 pm

Good grief… At this point I cannot find any pleasure in the Wahine leading 14-2.

Thos three unnecessary errors still bothering the crap outta me and that was 14 runs ago.

  227. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2010 7:10 pm

A-House, you would think the ump would have run that coaches butt after that comment!..No class!

  228. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 7:11 pm

    A-House,

Typical mainland arrogance from the Troy coach.

They don’t like it when a roster full of ethnic names is capitalizing on their errors.

  229. NorthShoreFan March 10, 2010 7:12 pm

    15-2..time to go eat dinner…next game…..

  230. wafan March 10, 2010 7:14 pm

    Nytal!

Go ‘Bows . . . class them back to Troy.

  233. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 7:41 pm

    Ok… NO MORE UNNECESSARY ERRORS!!!!!!!!!!

LET’S GO WAHINE!!!!! SWEEP THESE COMPLAINERS BACK TO SULK IN THEIR HOTEL ROOMS!!!!!!

  234. PowderPuff March 10, 2010 8:10 pm

Haha, Kazz! I am a nice yeller at the games. 🙂 Haven’t seen a hint of the Trojans yet, but I’ll let them know they should take a dip, jm2375.

ST – is it too late to consider vegetarian lasagna? I don’t want to be suggesting more difficult dishes, especially when you’re scrambling…but, just wondering. Like BIK said, you could doctor up the Ragu bottle – or the really girnormous can of sauce at Costco.

  235. Da Punchbowl Kid March 10, 2010 8:26 pm

We like ground turkey and Portuguese sausage in our spaghetti.

I remember eating blue crabs in spaghetti sauce when I was kid on the mainland. It wasn’t my favorite dish…

  236. Derek March 10, 2010 8:31 pm

Leon Rice is Associate Head Coach at Gonzaga and has been there for 11 years. He is stable and mature. Maybe he’s interested. Maybe not.
He has his roots in Washington, but as I remember correctly Dave Holmes was from Spokane, WA too and he became a very good football coach at UH.

  237. chawan_cut March 10, 2010 8:38 pm

that sucked today. fresno was just on fire from the outside and too fast. we were in it at first but they caught up and went crazy and we didn’t have the firepower to keep up.
at least this isn’t fresno, las cruces or tulsa!

  238. Da Punchbowl Kid March 10, 2010 8:43 pm

At least the Ladies of Troy are makin a game of it so far in this game.

Anybody notice if Troy has anyone named Helen on their roster?

Sorry, I just couldn’t let that one go by…

  239. jm2375 March 10, 2010 9:19 pm

everyone went to test out their spaghetti recipe?

  240. Kekoa March 10, 2010 9:51 pm

jm ~ We should make it a “Spagget Not To Forget!”

If we all cooked up and donated our best recipe, I think it would make for a great contest for bragging rights.

    Anything to help da Blogmeister.

  241. jm2375 March 10, 2010 9:55 pm

Congrats d1!! Have fun at the game.

  242. Kekoa March 10, 2010 10:06 pm

  243. Kekoa March 10, 2010 10:11 pm

jm ~ Not too much trouble, but they have to keep it Veggie style.

Not my fave. I’m like DPK, gotta have the Portuguse sausage.

Only if AL or BULLA gets going!

  253. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 10, 2010 10:37 pm

Statistically a controlled second game error wise but too much miscommunication and lack of speed at the infield. Miscues and whatnot made the second game longer than it should have been.

Wahine should have been putting more small ball pressure on Troy earlier on when Troy’s ace pitcher started lighting our batters up.

Still a lot to work on and I feel bad for our pitchers at times with the lack of consistent fielding.

Yes I am hard on this Wahine squad ONLY because they have the potential to work through these mistakes.

This team CAN win the WAC this year. CAN!!!!

  254. al March 10, 2010 10:39 pm

    diogenes…where have you been hiding?

  255. PowderPuff March 10, 2010 10:42 pm

  256. protector March 10, 2010 10:50 pm

ST & others, I do like the idea of Jarinn Akana getting a shot!

Don’t know Smith. Forget about the “buck”!

As for Arnold, didn’t like Frank or Benedict..Don’t think I’d like Gib. .Although, I did like Tom (Arnold) at times (True Lies, 9 Months, etc.).

Aloha & Mahalo to Bob Nash. Best wishes to Coach Reinebold.

  257. Pomai March 10, 2010 10:53 pm

Where’s Ralph? He needs to chime in with his take of the Wahine SB sweep tonite.

  267. Ralph March 10, 2010 11:32 pm

Kekoa I was sitting with Kazz, guy almost choked twice on his skittles. I told him too tough to bite and chew, too hard just to swallow so take his time, no, banana throws it down and chokes on them.

  268. Kekoa March 10, 2010 11:34 pm

jm ~ I have this mean visual of you getting dragged all over your neighborhood by your little 80 lb pup.

Hope you make it back *alive* from your walk in time to save our run to tree hunert tonite.

  269. Slugger March 10, 2010 11:34 pm

I gather the spaghetti sauce needs to be vegetarian. Grate some carrots; diced zucchini (adds liquid to the sauce, so cook accordingly); small cauliflower or broccoli florets; Italian parsley…lots of garlic, in addition to the usual suspects for sauce.

    Pomai,

You didn’t talk about the ‘stupid’ rule… 🙂

Off with her hea… no, no, no, off to bed…

    Esme & out… Night!

If you have leftover spaghetti sauce, poach some eggs in it for breakfast, or anytime… eat with or without pasta.

    K, night all.

    BTW,

The guy in thw yellow poncho they just showed on K5 replay is a manager of Big City Diner in Aiea across Pearl Ridge.

Me and my friends frequent there and talked UH sports with this guy last time.

I went over between games to tall story.

Nice guy and obviously a good supporter of all UH sports.

Great to see employees of UH sponsors actually at the games!!!!!

  282. Kekoa March 10, 2010 11:45 pm

Too close to quit now. C’mon Ralph, tell me how you wen jump on Kazz and pump da skittles outta him.

  283. Kekoa March 10, 2010 11:50 pm

Kazz ~ Speaking of BCD. Me, BG. Ralph and Betty stopped in to enjoy a meal after a MBB game one Friday night. Good kau kau! The fried noodle is onolicious and dey give you plenny!

  284. Ralph March 10, 2010 11:51 pm

Kekoa I told Kazz if he chokes on his skittles he is on his own, I don’t do mouth to mouth resuscitation. I might have stepped on his opu if he fell over to purge the skittles, if doesn’t pop out, well I told him so.

  285. Kekoa March 11, 2010 12:01 am

Kazz/Ralph ~ Troy looked shell-shocked in the 1st game. Struggled in the 2nd. Was it because they were upset with the umpires? They lost their reason for being here when they worried about the call and not the ball.

  286. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 11, 2010 12:03 am

BCD guava ribs are awesome from BCD. At first I didn’t like Ray Chan’s Island Style Poke because I HATE frozen fish but its growing on me.

Breakfast at BCD is also a GREAT value.

    Ok time to sleep…….

  287. Ralph March 11, 2010 12:04 am

coach was just protecting her players, game was already decided, but an energized coach can light a fire under her players and they came out focused in the second game. Something I think coach Nash lacked, the fire and zeal to be a game changer without being on the court. Some BB or baseball coach go out of the way to get themselves tossed to rile their team up.

  288. Ralph March 11, 2010 12:07 am

lots of choices this weekend, mvb vs long beach state, usc in baseball and the sb tournament. I’m going to sb, dvr the baseball and Al, don’t tell me the score. lol

  293. Kekoa March 11, 2010 12:31 am

19 to 3 is a bonafide A$$ Whuppin! No doubt those Tojams from Troy were humbled. They tried to get back up, but no can…

  294. Kekoa March 11, 2010 12:36 am

Ralph ~ No can. Got one big Bertday Luau planned for Diana’s cousin in Kaneohe. Kona keep us busy burning some pots and pans. Might have time to help Bulla with ST’s event on Sunday. All depends on how quickly we can clean up Saturday nite.

  295. Kekoa March 11, 2010 12:37 am

I was stuck in Dallas last night because my flight out of DC got into Dallas 2 hours late and made me miss my connection. I’m on standby for a flight that leaves in an hour but do not have a confirmed seat until 10:10pm!

Since Aloha Stadium is not available for the Warrior Bowl, what if UH played some other D-IA school on the mainland to end spring practice. The schools could charge admission and split the money, so it could bring revenue to UH. Having it somewhere that Hawaiian Airlines flies into could enable UH to get reduced travel costs…maybe Oregon State or Oregon or some other team not on the schedule.

This isn’t my idea–the latest people to mention this possibility is Clemson:

Head football coach Dabo Swinney has an idea to liven up spring practice — have Clemson play an exhibition game against another team.

“Let’s go play Georgia,” Swinney said. “Don’t you think that could generate some good money with all the Clemson fans and Georgia fans? Let’s split the gate down the middle.”

Swinney noted at the high school and NFL levels teams play other teams in exhibition games. So Clemson’s coach figures why not at the college level?

“You get tired of going against each other,” Swinney said.

Of course Swinney’s exhibition game would still resemble a spring game.

Quarterbacks would be off limits, there would be red-zone situational work, and the coaches would agree beforehand when to play the first team and when to play the second- and third-string players.

I’m off to the airport now…

  306. wafan March 11, 2010 3:55 am

Hope everyone has a terrific Thursday!

  307. wafan March 11, 2010 3:58 am

    Garret . . .

Hope you get on the earlier flight.

Seems nearly everytime I connect through DFW I get stuck there. Definitely not my favorite airport.

  308. wafan March 11, 2010 4:00 am

    Congratulations d1!!!

Dang, if PP sat opposite the rest of the Tsai-kos the other team would be surrounded. HA!

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Veggie Spaghetti Sauce.

I like a thin sauce with lots on interesting flavors. Here’s my standard sauce for a dutch oven.

Costco sells a very good veggie patty that comes in a plastic tub.

Brown a few of these in olive oil in your sauce pot (heavy-bottomed) or a saute pan. They will fall apart later so no need to cut them. Remove and set aside.

Add several cloves of minced garlic, a chopped sweet onion and several chopped sun-dried tomatoes, and a few chopped anchovy fillets and saute in the olive oil. Add more oil if needed.

Add two cans of stewed tomatoes, chopped, with all the sauce; two (regular size, not the small ones) cans of tomato sauce; a can of crushed or diced tomatoes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer. Add a lot of dried Italian seasoning- like 1/4 cup- to the simmering pot and return the veggie patties to the pot.

Simmer for at least 1/2 hour and serve over hot pasta. Sprinkle grated cheese and a few capers on top of the serving.
I soften some Thai rice noodles for myself to eat with the sauce. It is about the same size as linguine.

    HiHo!

  321. Maverick March 11, 2010 8:13 am

Howdy Doody sez ,”Morning peanut gallery”

Wanted to open a food kiosk called The Spagetti Corral.
Rope it off with a plastic fence with a western theme.
All the spagetti you can eat is always a noble idea.

Didn’t, or still does, Aunti Pasta’s still do that?

  322. LizKauai m/ March 11, 2010 8:14 am

Pomai, I usually add some Italian sausages to that recipe. But Kekoa asked for a veggie one so I complied.

    HiHo!

  323. djmitcho March 11, 2010 8:19 am

Good Morning All! Just been lurking for a while.

Derek re post 237, Leon Rice has already been tabbed to be the next Gonzaga coach if and when Mark Few decides to leave. Another interesting name on that coaching staff is Ray Giacoletti, the former Eastern Washington and Utah head coach. I could see him doing a good job with UH.

    Mahalo LizK ~

Trying to help Bulla get something going for the ‘Feed’ that ST is throwing on Sunday. Veggie is not a user friendly word to us guys.

I think if it were up to any of the Tseudo Tsaiko International Chefs, all kinds of exotic animal parts would end up in da sauce!

  325. jm2375 March 11, 2010 8:32 am
