Busy night in Manoa

By Stephen Tsai on April 30, 2010

For years, people have talked about the wish of having an on-campus football stadium in Manoa. We’ll see a little bit of how the traffic conditions would be when the UH football, baseball and softball teams all stage events at the same time tonight. At least the usual Friday-evening traffic will be eased because of furloughs. * * * * * Tonight’s Warrior Bowl — actually, it’s just an offense vs. defense controlled scrimmage — will give fans debate material […]

By Stephen Tsai on April 29, 2010

The Warriors dropped a tough one, in three sets, to top-ranked Stanford. Their season is now over, but it was exciting. And, yes, men’s volleyball is back in Manoa. * * * * * Opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft was named to the AVCA All-America first team, and left-side hitter Joshua Walker was selected to the second team. Satele gets tryout with Jets, Rocky to 49ers

By Stephen Tsai on April 28, 2010

After a deal with the Oakland Raiders fell through, Brashton Satele is now headed East for a tryout with the New York Jets. Although Satele signed a contract, which included a bonus, the Raiders did not finalize the deal. The Jets then called, inviting Satele for an audition. Mike Smith, who was a UH grad assistant tutoring the linebackers last year, is now an assistant with the Jets. * * * * * Spencer Smith said to make sure I […]

Flat start for Warriors; softball show at 3 today

By Stephen Tsai on April 27, 2010

The volleyball Warriors were prepared to take a shuttle to the Honolulu International Airport today when it was discovered that one of the two back-right tires was flat. One of the Warriors got off the bus, looked at the flat, and yelled: Shoji! Rainbow Wahine head coach Dave Shoji;s two sons play for Stanford, the Warriors’ opponent in Thursday’s MPSF semifinals. A school bus was summoned as a replacement, and the Warriors headed to the airport. * * * * […]

Former UH offensive lineman Aaron Kia (Mililani High, 2005) has been invited to participate in a tryout with the San Francisco 49ers this weekend. Kia will go through the same workouts as the other free agents. If successful, he hopes to land a free-agent contract. * * * * * K5 will televise Thursday’s MPSF semifinal between UH and Stanford. * * * * * Big thanks to quarterback David Graves for answering questions on the Warrior Beat Show today. * […]

Tryout for Blaze

By Stephen Tsai on April 25, 2010

Blaze Soares clarifies that he has a tryout, not a free-agent deal, with the Chicago Bears this weekend. The difference, I’m told, is a tryout does not come with signing bonus. A free agent is part of an NFL team’s 80-player offseason roster; a tryout player is not. * * * * * We’ve seen it before. Big game. Then big disappointment. Not last night. The volleyball Warriors came back. And came back. Everybody had a role in the victory. […]

He said he is waiting for a copy of the offer to be e-mailed or faxed. •  Former UH offensive tackle Ray Hisatake will sign a free-agent contract with the Carolina Panthers. “I’m really excited about this opportunity,” said Hisatake, who was offered a three-year contract. * * * * * Sailor Blue […]

By Stephen Tsai on April 23, 2010

Avis has selected Chop Suey Boy as the winner of two tickets to Saturday’s volleyball match. Text or call me at 256-0223 so I may leave the tickets at Will Call. Because I screwed up the count, there will be an additional drawing for two more tickets Saturday morning. * * * * * * Mouse Davis is in town for tomorrow’s UH Coaches Clinic, which will be held at the UH athletic complex, and will conclude with the Warriors’ […]
