The Warriors dropped a tough one, in three sets, to top-ranked Stanford.
Their season is now over, but it was exciting. And, yes, men’s volleyball is back in Manoa.

Word on the boulevard is that two former Punahou defensive backs — Mina Gould and Siu Tafuna — are expected to transfer to UH.
Gould played at Temple; Tafuna with the Naval Academy.

College level recruitment and transfers are really fluid and dynamic. No wonder the coaching ranks see so much movement or is it the cause? There are rare cases such as Wooden, Paterno, etc. Don’t know which is better, stability or change? Only thing I know for sure where change is good, is underwear!

Re-Bonham Award
In yesterday’s entry of the paper, Ann Miller writes an article on this year’s recipients of the award. What caught my eye was how one of the recipients, Cubi-Otineru, blossomed academically at UH. Even Coach Shoji, as described in the article, had his doubts about her. To face all the pressures that the student-athlete faces, off the field, on the field and in the classroom, and then to be recognized as your school’s best under the criterias of the Bonham Award says a lot. For Cubi-Otineru, one can see, is that she complements all the past winner on the list (and what a list!) very, very well.
“The Bonham Award is given annually to the top female and male senior student-athlete who “best exemplifies the ideals for which Jack Bonham stood for in the areas of athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character.”

Good to hear about the transfers, though it is too bad that the Naval Academy did not work out for Tafuna. A few months Mack mentioned that there were 5 or so players who wanted to transfer to UH and that all of them would have to walk-on. Those that earn their spots in the rotation could earn scholarships, of course.
It is good to hear that Ryan Mouton is considered the favorite to win the 5-way battle for the open starting CB spot for the Titans.
Garret… I hear u. I wonder how many transfers try per year and how many make it ? Might be a lesson to the young ones we offer scholies or walk-on pref…that home is a great place to play?

This year is *very* important for all teams who do not want to get left behind in the coming conference realignment. Not only is this the 3rd out of 4th year for the current BCS evaluation (which could theoretically get the MWC an automatic spot for 2012 and 2013), but this is the 1st year of the evaluation period (2010-2013) to determine which conferences will be AQ Conferences from 2014-2017. The Big East could lose their spot, given their performance lately and how they might lose a few of their better teams.

Good luck to the MVB team. It feels a bit like those great rivalry games in the mid 90s when the Israelis were around — UCLA had more starters from Hawaii than Hawaii did. Stanford is taking that to an even higher level — with fully 7 out of their 19 roster positions take up by Hawaii kids. Heck, they essentially start four kids from Hawaii — while Hawaii really only has one local player who has gotten any significant time.
Really shows the level of high school volleyball in Hawaii. It is sad but just like in the 90s it almost makes you wonder which team is really representing Hawaii.
Both Siu and Mina have the skills and desire to make the team. I just hope they start out as walk-ons and eventually prove themselves to earn their scholarships.
Hawaii is a volleyball state and we put out some good volleyball players. With Charlie Wade at the helm…..and with UH headed in the direction they are, I believe we just might have a better shot at landing some of the blue chippers from our state. WE got some volleyball players. ON a related note, some of our local volleyball players have not been able to cut it academically. I know one in Hilo who was strongly recruited by the former coaching staff at UH. He’s an AMAZING volleyball player from a volleyball family here in Hilo. YES, we have volleyball families here. Remember, we host the largest VB tourney in the state each spring. Bradduh just couldn’t make the grade academically.

Every year I can’t wait till August for 20+ walk on coming on to Cooke Field or it’s Ching Field now. But it will always be Cooke Field for me.
But kids like Mina Gould and Siu Tafuna — transfing to UH is what I look for every summer.

Congrats to Dave, Mary and their sons. Dave is a heck of an athlete who could have played any sport. Same for his sons– Dave and his daughter Cobey would pass/bump balls with them when they were still in diapers!! They could jump serve when they were six or seven. But at that age they could also throw a football with a perfect spiral and play the infield and make double plays in baseball like major leaguers.

It looks like the Big East wants to prevent its conference from being raided by the Big 10 by forcing Notre Dame to join the Big 10. Kicking Notre Dame out of the Big East would force them to do join some other conference…and I don’t know of any other conference that would take Notre Dame in without requiring the football team to be included.
Another article about the Big East’s situation, describing how Cincinnati might be forced to join the C-USA if the Big East gets raided by the Big 10.
Everybody likes to focus on how the MWC wants to get an automatic BCS spot, but it should be pointed out that the difference turns out to be just $1 million per school if they get that spot. However, recruiting and prestige would go up. The big revenue difference between the SEC/Big 10 and the WAC is the regular season TV deals, NOT the BCS bowl payments.
For a 12-team conference, the difference in BCS bowl money comes out to $750k…that wouldn’t even come close to covering UH’s budget deficit.

So, I got all excited when I saw that I had a suite. Then I realized: I’m staying at the Embassy Suites. Every room is a suite. lol.
with one more recruit to go…men’s basketball is going in the right direction. the gibber has done well in so short a period. he definitely works hard at his craft. i don’t think we have ever had a head coach who got down on his hands and knees in the actual recruiting process as much as he.
i have no doubt that the rainbow warrior basketball team will be back on its track in a couple years. yah, this will be a young team and will have flashes of brilliance towards the second half of the inaugural season but only after a year or two will the team start to shine. we need to be patient.
we have all been so frustrated over the years and are just itching to yell, scream, and cheer for our home team. (remember the alika/ac days?)

This final regular season series for the Wahine is as simple as it gets.
Bulldog pitching versus Wahine hitting.
Good vs Evil, north vs south, east vs west, blah blah blah… You get the picture.
For the coaches, especially Fresno’s Margie Wright, it’s all the other dimensions of her team that will mean the difference between winning and losing. Let’s face it, she knows the Wahine can bat themselves out of good pitching. It’s been done time after time. Pridmore = DOWN, Krieg = DOWN, Holverson = DOWN. Kelly Majam is not the sole key to the Wahine success and Wright knows this. You can bet she was salivating watching Krieg pitch around her and hearing about Majam’s Ks in Reno, but I’d like to see Coach Wright’s face when the rest of our order dismantled their opponents.
For Wright, she’s going to have to pull out all the stops and can’t expect her pitchers to do all the work. Fresno State is not the hitting team they should be. They are hitting a team average of .300. So they are the BEST hitting per average team we’ve faced since San Jose State.
So where else can they threaten? Well, let’s return to the “CAL” factor in stolen bases. Ok, so in conference not so much attempts. 11 to be exact but successful in 10 of them. Up until this weekend, stealing bases and playing small ball was probably not a necessity against their prior WAC opponents as opposed to the tough non conference foes they’ve faced in which they attempted to steal 28 and they were successful 23 times. Haley Gilleland is your MAIN and pretty much ONLY threat to do so as she is a perfect 8-8 on stolen base attempts and 16-19 overall.
Fresno State will want to keep the Wahine infielders pressured as much as possible. While infield errors and miscommunication was a BIG handicap on the Wahine in the first half of the season, they have DRASTICALLY improved on this as soon as the WAC season started. Me thinks Coach Wright will still want to test this out for herself. The Wahine have NOT been pressured on the bases at all this season and in the beginning when SJSU looked like to be a poor-man’s CAL, they tried to outhit the Wahine and this is something Fresno State will NOT ATTEMPT to do.
Keys for the Wahine:

-Infielding
Kaia Parnaby and Stephanie Ricketts will need to just do their thing. That’s all it is. Both pitchers have come a long way this season to let things slip out only now. Fresno State will not threaten like our batting order but they will take every advantage of every single or double and every little miscue available on the infield. Opportunistic teams can be the ones to upset the top teams.

-Capitalizing on Wahine errors
While I do NOT think Fresno State will win just off of pitching, if Moses, Melloh, and Oakes have the game of their season, the Wahine could be in trouble. Our batters have expressed their patience in waiting for their pitches so it will be very important for the Fresno State batters to stay ahead of their counts.

Expect a TON of “gamesmanship” aka whining and moaning from Fresno State. Unnecessary time for “equipment” adjustments, etc… Basically the typical mainland type of “performance” from visiting teams once they start feeling threaten by the “little” islanders. Here you have a program who’s ego IS bruised by being left off the WAC discussions and playing “second fiddle” to the Wahine’s batting power all season long. They will not care how they win it, just that they do.
Expect the SAME from the Wahine. No BS, just looking to mercy rule the Bulldogs.

No haven’t met.Maybe some day. But I know by reading this blog daily you two have a lot of pull . So heres what I’m thinking us 15 guys go eat at camelias before the volleyball game. Eat mountains of food like tsaikos do then leave our cars in the parking lot with notes saying “we tsaikos, we know al”. Okay, no? Then walk over to genji. And us talk over the rules, like no swearing, no over drinking and no groping, on the way. Got to leave with a good impression on art because he thinks we tsaikos. Although we polar opposites of tsaikos. For we only come out when the teams doing good. If Art hasn’t sniffed out by the end of the game, maybe we sing. IDK. We see. You guys come by and say hi, no?

I wanna say the past three months maybe? I really don’t go into their photo galleries.
I know a while back the UH website had some upgrades and recently the MOBILE-friendly version of the site became available. One day a few weeks ago I went to the site via my blackberry and VOILA!!! A mobile friendly version COMPLETE with “H-TV” streaming video which REALLY shocked me as I believe the UH website uses Flash and Flash is not viewable on PDA’s smartphones, iPhone, blackberry etc…
But then again the website is not flash, just the video features, so I guess that’s why.
The ONLY thing missing is mobile-friendly versions of LIVE STATS.

One thing I will say about the entire 3rd floor is how small the hallways are and how everyone is in close proximity to each other. It was my first time in there two weeks ago.
The “waiting” area at the main entrance of the 3rd floor is nicer in person. ST posted pics of the new TVs and the trophy display case months ago.
I was briefly meeting with Coach Coolen and while making my way to his office on the 3rd floor I naturally walked into the 1st floor expecting some kind of elevator to the 3rd and nope… Had to go outside to the elevators. Kinda weird… But yeah, it seems like this new football wing is MILES ahead of the rest of the complex as a whole… At least there are no more holes in the ceiling. 😯

I hope those of us that attended the “Game On” fundraiser a few years back helped ease the cost of this thing. I could have sworn that the funds raised from that event would go towards this new wing.
I hope JD and the department has an annual fundraiser like this for the public to be a part of to help defer costs of repairs and maintenance for ALL UH facilities.

Maples is an amazing facility. The stands are close, and even though there are only a few hundred here for the BYU-Northridge game, it’s pretty loud. I wonder if BYU is on a trimester break? There are a lot of BYU fans here.
Anyway if Stanford and BYU both win, there’s no need to play Saturday. Both will go to the NCAA final four. Or should I say “stay.” NCAA final four is here.

I don’t think I need to say how long ago this wing should have been completed. The reality is, Jim Donovan really just did his job like he’s supposed to. Some may think he REALLY went out on a limb to get this thing done with obvious assistance from the legislature and fans, but really that’s his job and thankfully he’s doing it.

If the Warriors win and play on Saturday at 4pm and IF and ONLY IF K5 gets the word out to Oceanic fast enough, the TV listing will be up for volleyball at 4pm and then you can use this program and set the end time pretty late if you want to DVR softball as it will be a tape delayed game. Most likely it will only be the second game of the DH which will feature the senior ceremonies.
This thing is giving me a headache…

What a season it has been. I remember attending my first game this season under the Wade Era and not being able to pay attention to the game. Mostly it was due to watching ushers chase students out of the arena in attempt to please the saimin eaters and the Wall Street Journal readers as the noisy students were interrupting their library session… 🙄
The fact that the arena was now filled with L-I-F-E is something that I knew was special. The team was coming off an upset of then #1 USC and riding high. The same players with new blood, GERMAN blood, injected into the Green and White, and add in a new coaching staff and success was BORN!!!
From Spiderman, Venom, and the Red Power Ranger, to the legend that is Alan “Rubberband Man” Hackbarth Warrior Volleyball has returned to the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
I cannot recall such a quick revival since 1999 with the football team.
On the court we saw the emergence of the hearlded Jonas Umlauft becoming everything we hoped he’d be right before our eyes. We saw the emergence of Nejc Zemljak as a true threat at the service line. We saw Joshua Walker literally reach new heights. We saw a revived middle attack from both Matt “Dragon” Rawson and Steven Grgas. We saw Ric Cervantes giving up his body to save a point. We saw a lot of things that made us smile MORE than moments that made us cringe.
It was a BEAUTIFUL ride and I look for more in the years to come!
Mahalo to Coach Charlie Wade and his Warriors for giving us, the fans, a HELLUVA OF JOURNEY!!!

Report claims that the Big 10 Conference is expanding to 16 teams, pretty much ending the Big East as a BCS AQ conference and forcing the Big 12 to get 2 teams…if they don’t lose Texas to some other conference and implode.
dang. but what a great year. from the wilt-ed (on) last few years where it was dismal, what a total change of everything. the fans are back. the players enjoy playing again. congratulations coach wade on a great first season. can’t wait to see what’s ahead!

Watching the game, the more I see Stanford the more I got to hate them.
So much money, so arrogant, so much feeling entitled. I am definitely pulling for Northridge. Men of War had an unbelievable season. The difference was passing. I thought Stanford passed a lot better than we did. Next year the focus should be on better passing and finding a great libero. With 2 new middle blockers, 6’8″ and 6’9″ Shane Popelka and Shane Welch I hope these 2 newcomers will be an intimidating force. We’ll get Stanford at our place next season. For sure, we’ll get our revenge.

wade’s warriors have arrived well before its expected delivery.
i hope there are incentives built into his contract that will not only signify a well deserved mahalo but will also increase his finances.
the university of hawaii sports programs have a positive glow about them. mvb has definitely found its place in the sun once again. wvb is back on the rise and the team plays to the crowd. wbb has taken care of the ethical issues and they to are poised to become a respectable program once again.
mbb in just a short four to five weeks led by the gibber has definitely become the new talk at all the water cooler stations. what he has done recruiting wise has caused enough stir amongst the community unlike in the past decade. if this recruit class can prove on the court this winter, that program will turn around real quick in the attendance and will overflow into the cash tills. the rainbow warriors are back.
softball has just been unbelievable. the long ball has returned and proven to be king…er, queen. the team is just a complete feel good story and it couldn’t have happened to a more diligent and good guy like bob coolen.
baseball is showing glimpses of its return to our gloried past that ole les murakami developed with much vision and insight. if trap can continue to lure the local stars to wearing the old green n orange coupled with some young guns from the mainland the hardball will once again be the talk of the town throughout the little leagues and on up to the american legions.
the king of uh sports needs to step up and be counted. for without football success, many other sports will not be funded properly. in these tough economic times we need the king to return. we need to have that rust palace a rocking and rolling. one soldout aloha stadium is equivalent to 20 home baseball games, ten seasons of wbb, etc, etc. that is how huge football is to the university of hawaii.
football is still the pulse of the state. we waited so long for june jones to come a riding in on his white horse. too bad he traded it in for a pony. but, believe that it can come back. we have to trust in mack.
and lets not forget that in the past few years that he has taken over the uhad things have surely turned around not only with his three hires but also as a result of his visions of grandeur for his alma mater. good job jimbo!

Volleyball LIVES at the University of Hawaii.
From our Rainbow Wahine to our Warriors, the masses unite, they show up in droves, they scream like they’ve never screamed before. At the end of the day, one’s college experience cannot be completely defined via championship rings and that is nowhere more fact than at UH.
One doesn’t have to look far to see the smiles on the faces of our Rainbow Wahine who reached the lofty heights of being the #3 team in all the land and argueable the BEST team in the nation sans the freaks of nature in Penn State and Texas.
If you graduate and walk away with four national championship rings then more power to you, but do you want to live in obscurity? How many life long connections, academically and athletically will you have made when no one knows what you do outside the classroom? Friends and some family in the stands to cheer you on can only take you so far.
If you graduate and have one or no rings, it’s somewhat empty, but would you have given that up for the strangers that you have met? The connections you have made to help further your career because of who you are OUTSIDE the classroom? Remember those memories you’ll have from children and old alike asking for a picture, an autograph, or a moment to say “mahalo” for representing the State of Hawaii and it’s people.
Life is not won by how many “toys” you end up with, but with how many friends you have to share the “toys” you have with.
At UH Manoa, a prospective volleyball recruit has the world right before his or her eyes. Members of both the Rainbow Wahine and the Warriors have succeeded in the classroom and on the court as well and are greeted by the THOUSANDS in attendance. If you want to learn what REAL LIFE pressure is like, imagine the hopes and dreams of thousands of strangers riding on your every serve, every block, and every kill. It is then and only then will you grow as a human being. It is then and only then will you realize responsibility in ways a classroom cannot teach you as a young adult.
Volleyball is it in Hawaii. The most knowledgable and loyal fans of ANY sport at UH Manoa.
We can bring it to you.

Warrior Football is it. We love Coach Mack and still have every reason to let him work on what he believes will end up being beneficial for the program on and off the field.
Time is ticking though.
Our “smaller” programs are thriving and our non-revenue ones are pulling in the kind of success that bigger kala programs should with respect to comparative resources.
UH Rainbow Warrior Basketball is making that upward trek and football remains to be seen.
The Wahine volleyball team can only whip the WAC around and pull in their share of the revenue, but it’s not enough.

Yes, Shoji got his 1,000th win & the WVB team got to the NCAA Semifinals. But Charlie’s MVB team is the most improved for the two first-year coaches. You could see that the team was gelling through the season and played at a high level through today. There’s still improvement needed, but for the development of the players and the increase in the fan base, I think Charlie deserves (my) UH Coach of the Year award.

It looks like the Pac 10 is expanding to 12 teams fairly soon, but the MWC may be proactive and expand from 9 to 12 teams before the Pac 10 does anything. It will be interesting to see what 3 teams they plan to add.

The SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12, and MWC are all actively pursuing expansion and improving their status. Karl Benson and the WAC seem to be sitting on the side and hoping things go well instead of talking about grabbing teams from elsewhere or keeping their membership strong.
Two years ago when BYU’s President talked about how he wished that his conference had a deal with ESPN like the WAC (even though they make 2x to 3x the money with the current MWC TV deal), that would have been a great time for Benson to publicly invite BYU or any other MWC team to join the WAC. It would have been a nice way to boost the WAC in the eyes of the public over the MWC…but Benson did nothing. So, everybody ignored BYU’s President talking nicely about the WAC and instead focused on BSU’s President talking about their desire to go to the MWC. That made the MWC look like it was much, much better than the WAC…and perception becomes reality to the public.
I’m not just second guessing things now…I posted this suggestion 2 years ago in this blog right after posting the comments from BYU’s leadership here. The WAC could have gotten the focus to be on BYU wanting to leave the MWC for the WAC instead of having everybody talk about BSU leaving the WAC for the MWC.
IMHO as long as benson is in charge the WAC will flounder, we need a strong comish an that’s not him, you can see all he is doing is looking out for BSU. It’s time to hire some new blood

Well now what is their excuse going to be for not going to the Na Wahine Koa softball games this weekend? Out of all the events going on they are the ones that are going to win the WAC an possibly go on to win the National Championship. So fellow TSAIKOS I challenge you to put your butts where your mouths are, show up an support the best dang team in the country. And for the others that cry about the cost, GOOD LORD IT’S FREE.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
