Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on July 4, 2010

Since today is a holiday, let’s take over UH for a day. Here’s the plan: • With Don Murphy taking (at least) a one-year break from running the Pigskin Pigout, UH is searching for a backup plan. One idea being floated is a telethon. Uh, no. That’s one step from standing at intersections with fishing nets. So how about reviving the Pigskin Pigout? But instead of a pricey event, throw a party. For a $10 entry fee, the Stan Sheriff […]

The Man Show

By Stephen Tsai on July 3, 2010

The past couple of years, guys tried to find a way to sneak into Heather McMackin’s football clinic for women. Now UH is floating the idea of having a clinic for male football fans. Like Heather McMackin’s clinic, this workshop would be held at both the Stan Sheriff Center and Ching Athletic Complex. And it would include video demonstrations and tips from the UH coaches. Details still are being finalized. * * * * * Terry Brennan said his son […]

The 2010 Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 2, 2010

Here’s the latest UH football roster. If a player is not listed, it means the player is A) going to grayshirt, B) is still awaiting NCAA clearance, or C) the blog host forgot to type in the name. Defensive end Veni Manu has met the NCAA eligibility requirements, but he awaits final  approval from UH Upper Campus officials. Quarterbacks: Shane Austin David Graves Bryant Moniz Brent Rausch Corey Nielsen Cayman Shutter Kevin Spain Running backs Kainoa Carlson Chizzy Dimude Alex […]

Who’s No. 1?

By Stephen Tsai on July 1, 2010

Loving the NBA’s free-agent coverage, mostly because the analysts speak LOUDLY, and at my age, I love (need?) loud talk. And while I’m sending subliminal mental messages for LeBron to choose the Knicks — hey, you have your dreams, I have mine — I started to think: Who’s the Warriors’ Lebron? If all of the UH players became free agents who gets the most attention? I’m thinking slotback Greg Salas. But after watching yesterday’s unsupervised practice, it could very well […]

Field work

By Stephen Tsai on June 30, 2010

There was a large enough  turnout for today’s unsupervised workouts — more than 60 players — to run stations for offensive linmen, defensive linemen, linebackers and ball-handling players. The 90-minute workout concluded with 11-on-11 drills. Among the highlights: • Freshman defensive end Beau Yap made a sack. • Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga and strong safety Spencer Smith had back-to-back interceptions. • Facing a seven-blocker line, Meatoga, noting the offense was tipping off its plays, juked his way in for a […]

Former Warrior ailing

By Stephen Tsai on June 29, 2010

Sad to hear that former UH defensive back Kent Kafentzis, a cancer survivor, is enduring a medical setback. His family is setting up a foundation in which donations will be used to pay for his medical expenses. * * * * * To help replace the loss of income from the Pigskin Pigout, which is on hiatus for a year, Na Koa is considering holding a telethon. Proceeds will be used to pay supplement summer school, the football training table, […]

No Hawaii vacation for Bess

By Stephen Tsai on June 28, 2010

Former UH receiver Davone Bess said he will remain in Miami until the start of the Dolphins’ training camp in late July. Bess had spent the past two summers in Hawaii. “I’ve got a little spot here,” Bess said. Bess again will wear No. 15, after declining to sell it to Brandon Marshall, who popularized that number during his career wit the Denver Broncos. “I couldn’t do it, just couldn’t do it,” Bess said. He said NFL rules prohibit him […]

Sunday specials

By Stephen Tsai on June 27, 2010

OK, OK, time to clean out the In box: • The Rainbow Wahine softball team today will sign autographs and pose for pictures at the RainBowTique Ward Centre, from 11:30 a.m. to 1;30 p.m. • Several UH players, including Kealoha Pilares and Spencer Smith, will be among the instructors at the Koa Kid Football Camp this coming week at the UH athletic facilities. It’s an all-day camp, too. For details, go to Koa Kid Football. • The UH men’s volleyball […]
