Nice in-depth analysis of Idaho in this article. Idaho opens with North Dakota and then has their paycheck game at Nebraska. Their next 2 games are against MWC teams (UNLV and at Colorado State) so I hope they don’t get too many injuries at Nebraska.

Here are a few snippets from the article.

Just setting foot in a bowl game was quite an achievement for a program coming out of the lowest ebb of a decade-long losing streak, with just three wins in two years from 2007-08. Last year’s 8-5 rebound was the Vandals’ first winning season since 1999.

The defense returns the entire front seven, but that might not necessarily bode well: Idaho was 77th nationally against the run last time around (fun fact: That was still good for third in the WAC!). What they do have is a wealth of experience in the secondary, led by senior safety Shiloh Keo, who led the Vandals with three interceptions in ’09 and tied for second in the conference in tackles.

  12. Kazz July 2, 2010 10:38 am

(carried over and opining on Garret and MichiganWarrior’s posts)

I may represent the small minority here, but I have alwats thought our sports culture as a whole in this country is B.S.

Locally-speaking, as much as I’ve attended UH football games, I’ve attented basketball, wahine vball, men’s vball, baseball, and softball.

I find VALUE in all sports. Male or female. Especially at the college level where our female athletes do just as much justice in the classrooms and in their fields of competition to represent UH as their male counterparts and at the college level a successful mens volleyball team brings as much value to the university up front as a successful football program.

I’m not stupid and I do see that dollar-wise, it’s not equal and it is the FAULT of our country’s own sports culture, but I REFUSE to be a part of that majority.

Am I naïve? To most I guess, but I don’t care.

As a country, we like to win, but we’re also choosy as to what we want to see win.

It’s best to fly above the “radar” sometimes. One may find their life more fulfilling because of it. 😎

  13. Garret July 2, 2010 10:39 am

    ST,

    Thank you for the roster!

To answer Ronnie’s question, not all of those players can be invited to Fall Camp because when I counted them it was much more than the camp roster limit. For example, we know that Corey Nielsen is not going to camp but is invited to join after the roster limits end.

  14. Slugger July 2, 2010 10:39 am

    Scott Morifuji,

Mahalo for the numbers, the backward & forward links, and the name format. Next challenge: getting the blog over to the Star-Advertiser, and not opening up the blogs in new windows. Thanks.

  15. Garret July 2, 2010 10:40 am

I’d be very curious if all 3 kickers go to fall camp. Given camp roster limitations, 3 kickers might seem like a lot to me when others like Corey won’t get to go to camp. Plus, how much kicking will 3 kickers get to do if they split reps?

  16. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 10:41 am

I do not believe all of the players are invited to camp.
For instance, I believe Kahai Choy is a first-day-of-school player. Same as Corey Nielsen.

  17. Garret July 2, 2010 10:42 am

    Kazz,

UH Athletics needs more fans like you. If they had more fans like you that went to all sporting events, things would be much better for the Athletic Department.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 10:42 am

    Garret:
Good point on the kickers. For sure, Enos and Hadden will be there. Not sure about the Kaiser guy; then again, he didn’t get a good enough look in the spring.

  19. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 10:44 am

Sierra is going to grayshirt. Lolohea, I believe, is still awaiting clearance. Katina also should be OK, although I do no see him on the list. Maybe a grayshirt?

  20. SteveM July 2, 2010 10:44 am

  23. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 2, 2010 10:48 am

Wow!! Mahalo for the list!! Will all of them play this season if they’re in good health or wil a certain number be cut?

Returning to yesterday’s blog which focused on $$$$ issues:

First of all, if I remember correctly every sport at UH has a separate booster club or a fund set up to help underwrite the team’s expenses – including the cheerleading squad.

Second, until state laws are changed permitting naming rights on physical facilities such as Aloha Stadium, the various playing venues at UH, and the various appurtances such as scoreboards, the only way to get corporate underwriting support for UH athletics programs are through tournament & event sponsorships such as the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl or specific games & matches during the regular season. If I remember correctly, every single one held at The Stan for the past several years has had a specific “Sponsor of the Day.”

Perhaps someone from the AD’s staff could tell us what the corporate donation for a specific game or match donation go towards – visiting team travel? accommodations? SSC operating costs? UH travel costs? Coaches’ salaries?

In the meantime, perhaps Garret and others wanting to change How We Do Things Around Here could take some time to put together a packet of proposals to submit for consideration at the 2011 Legislature. As a FANatic myself, I’ll be more than happy to take part.

I’ll identify the key people to contact after the General Election and the State House & Senate have been reorganized. Hopefully, a new chair will be selected for the House Higher Education Committee. There’ll definitely be a new Chair for the House Judiciary Committee.

  24. Kazz July 2, 2010 10:51 am

    ST,

What do you think of Zach Masch getting into the rotation at DT?

  25. madeinhawaii July 2, 2010 10:54 am

Wow.. forgot all about Malcolm Lane… If he comes back into the line up we’ll have two experienced deep threats… Lane and Bradley.. along with Pilares and Salas… + Green and Dimude… with a solid O-line we could be contenders… QB? hmmm… which way do we go, huh.. which way do we go?

  26. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 2, 2010 10:55 am

Got my question answered about the roster number.

  27. madeinhawaii July 2, 2010 10:56 am

But if he hasn’t turned up for unsupervised workouts… maybe he has no intention of coming back?

  28. Garret July 2, 2010 10:59 am

Utah State just signed a RB that will play for them *this* season! It appears to me that he must have been a late qualifier–he sure had a lot of recruiting options before it appeared that he wouldn’t qualify.

Robert Marshall, a bruising 6-foot-1, 230-pound running back out of Maceo Smith High School in Dallas, has committed to play for Utah State.

He’ll join the team in time for the upcoming season, shoring up and providing depth to a position still hurting from the injury to star running back Robert Turbin.

A source close to the USU football team told the Deseret News that Marshall is on campus now and working out with Aggie players. But because of NCAA guidelines, Marshall will not be able to sign his National Letter of Intent until the fall semester begins.

He was named to the Texas All District 4A-11 football team and had been recruited by schools such as Kansas, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Arkansas, UTEP and Texas A&M but never signed with any school.

  29. papajoe2 July 2, 2010 11:01 am

I don’t know if the coaches will allow 3 kickers on the roster, but kickers are a different animal. They almost always are on the side practicing on their own. They need to make Kool-aid. Make friends with Kool-aid make kool-aid with friends:))

  30. Garret July 2, 2010 11:03 am

Here is an article by Ferd in 2003 that shows how UH didn’t pledge loyalty to the WAC and resulted in schools like SMU leaving. For all the blame that Karl Benson gets here, the facts are that Dobelle’s attempt to get into the MWC resulted in the WAC imploding.

While defections were bound to happen eventually, it isn’t hard to see the decision by Rice, Southern Methodist and Tulsa to leave the WAC for Conference USA as having been given a nudge by UH.

President Evan Dobelle’s outspoken declaration of interest in the Mountain West Conference in the spring and the school’s subsequent refusals to back commissioner Karl Benson’s plan for WAC solidarity have figured in this.

At the very least, UH made it easier for the three to defect. More likely, it helped galvanize the decision.

To assure the conference the unity it needed to pull the plan off, Benson visited members asking them to pledge one-for-all solidarity. According to two people who took part, the vote was 7-3 with just UH, SMU and Nevada against. The other two might have eventually come around had UH been willing to reconsider, but it never did.

Now, UH is between the WAC and a hard place. If it gets invited to the MWC — no sure thing — it has lost any leverage and will probably have to pay handsomely for the opportunity.

Or, UH faces the prospect of staying in a watered-down WAC, where the options are staying at seven teams or gathering up whatever remnants are left to fill out the lineup.

The people who run UH should, least of all, be surprised it is coming to this.

  31. papajoe2 July 2, 2010 11:03 am

What I remember about Malcolm Lane is he has sooo much talent but always seem to drop balls thrown to him at crucial times.

  32. Garret July 2, 2010 11:05 am

Basically, Dobelle was lobbying publicly for UH to get into the MWC just like how BSU’s President lobbied 5 years later. For all the criticism we gave BSU for making the WAC look bad, UH did it first!

Dobelle has publicly touted on several occasions the MWC’s benefits to UH and what the school could bring to the conference. Asked yesterday if he was concerned UH might not receive an invitation, Dobelle said, “not really.”

  33. Garret July 2, 2010 11:07 am

Nice praise for Chad Owens’ TD return by his head coach. That was a *great* way to make his new team happy they traded for him!

Early in the fourth quarter, Owens broke off a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown to pull the Argos within a point.

“That touchdown run by Chad Owens was one of the best I’ve seen in the league,” Barker said. “That was just heart.”

  34. madeinhawaii July 2, 2010 11:07 am

Yep… and Boise gets to take all it’s BCS winnings if they get an invite, when it leaves, too, eh? Ah.. the things you don’t do can come back and bite you in the fanny…

  35. madeinhawaii July 2, 2010 11:10 am

    papajoe2:

Still Lane warranted full coverage by the defense and forced them deep. He and Bradley could really open up the inside or even the run game. Any pass they catch could be a romp to the end zone.

  36. Garret July 2, 2010 11:11 am

    madeinhawaii,

BSU will get to keep its $3 million when it leaves if they make a BCS bowl. However, the WAC will get to keep the other $3 million of the $6 million earned to split equally with the other 8 teams left.

If 2 non-AQ teams make a BCS bowl and BSU is the lower-ranked team, then they will get $3 million and the WAC will get $1.4 million.

  37. gigi-hawaii July 2, 2010 11:16 am

    Chawan,

Thanks for the video of Chad Owens’ touchdown run (in yesterday’s blog)! Terrific!

  38. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 11:18 am

    Rich:
I do not believe Malcolm Lane will be back. He was put on something of an academic probation last fall. He didn’t do as well as expected, and thus was “suspended” for the spring ball. Since he has not participated in unsupervised workouts, I think he’s done. For sure, he won’t be invited to training camp. Too bad. I like the guy. Very personable.

  39. Garret July 2, 2010 11:19 am

Bad news about Lane…but sadly, this was kind of expected.

  40. Jeff July 2, 2010 11:20 am

As if we needed more examples of what an awful President Evan Dobelle was. He also hired Herman Frazier if your remember.

  41. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 11:21 am

It will be a challenge for Masch to get into the rotation. Meatoga and Correa were clearly ahead out of spring practice. Tuipulotu, who underwent shoulder surgery last year, is now healthy. Hanohano is coming on, and the coaches really like Manapuna. But Masch is strength guy, and you always need those in the trenches.

  42. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 11:24 am

Dobelle could have been the right guy, with his ties to the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, there was a Republican in the White House at the time.

  43. Stretch July 2, 2010 11:27 am

Too bad about Malcolm Lane. I guess he didn’t want it “BAD” enough.

  44. Jeff July 2, 2010 11:27 am

    ST,

I forgot about Dobelle’s political ties. It was probably one of the reasons he was hired in the first place. He was stupid to make that ad endorsing Mazie Hirono though, especially when Lingle won the election, and we wonder why Lingle always seemed to have lukwarm support for UH ever since then.

  45. al July 2, 2010 11:28 am

st…what is the deal with friel?

  46. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 11:29 am

Frazier is smart and charismatic. But for some reason. he had difficulty finishing the job. He couldn’t finish schedules, and he couldn’t finish contracts. And this was in a robust economy with the full backing of the interim chancellor.

  47. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 11:30 am

Despite rumors, last I heard he was still committed to UH. Think they’re waiting on clearance.

  48. Stephen Tsai July 2, 2010 11:32 am

2007 was a good year for everyone — UH, fans, businesses.
    And then the bubble burst.

  49. al July 2, 2010 11:33 am

while lane’s loss is huge…i think that we have a bright (darius) situation if he doesn’t do the redshirt thing.

billy ray is coming off injuries. pollard is ready to step it up.
bright’s redshirt is dependent upon the health of the hot rod.
if bradley is 100%, then i think bright will sit and become the newbie of the year in 2011.

good to know that we have reload options at wideout.

not to mention that we are loaded at slot even with the two’s and three’s.

  70. OTTO July 2, 2010 12:13 pm

To re-ignite the discussion on WAC payout of revenues. Look at the WACSports.com website. UH is ranked way down the list in 2009-2010 Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Give points for standings in all “WAC” sports. UH doesn’t offer 4 WAC sports (M Cross Country, W Indoor Track, Gymnastics and something else can’t remember), and three of our sport teams compete outside the WAC (M Vball, Sailing and Cheerleading). So if the WAC passed out revenue sharing based on performance in the WAC, UH would still be in the bottom half…

#59… Aurite, Pride!!! Go, Warriors!!! Das what I’m talkin’ ’bout!

The Boise State game started in January. Boys need to think that way. Luckily from what I hear, players have a great relationship with the strength and conditionng coach. That coach has had them working their tail ends off since January. The key is, has been quality work? To work hard just for the sake of working hard is a waste of time. Got to work hard and smart. The hard work put in during the offseason and over the summer should enhance their performance on the field. Too many times we see athletes with bigger guns and bigger chests but yet their play on the field isn’t improved. Yes they look good without their shirts on, but did their overall peformance on the field improve? Not only did they get stronger? But did they get faster, quicker, more agile? Did they improve their balance, their endurance, and stamina? Do they have better explosion, change of direction, vision? Can they play lower, with better leverage? All of those questions need to answered in a positive way? Luckily, with the present strength coach, I believe that the answer to all of those questions is affirmative.

The Wariors need to believe today that they will beat Boise. They need to believe today that they will be BCS busters. They need to constantly use self talk to remind themselves of what their goals are.

  86. Curt July 2, 2010 12:43 pm

    gigi,

I didn’t mean to give the impression that Colt has a small chance of making the Redskins. I really don’t know. If Colt is clearly better than Bartel, Bartel would’ve been cut loose already. From reading the article on Bartel, he appears to be a “game manager” type of QB. So I infer that he likes to play conservatively, avoid mistakes, and pick his spots to go for it. We all know that Colt is a playmaker/gun slinger. He’s aggressive and takes chances. I’d like to see Colt be more selective on when to go for it. If he throws lots of interceptions, I would think the #3 position might go to Bartel. So I believe that Colt’s pre-season games are really critical.

  87. al July 2, 2010 12:43 pm

c_c…why of course. in fact, i’ll offer sunday bbq’s as well.

    #86 Curt,

OK. You make sense and I agree with you.

  97. Garret July 2, 2010 1:00 pm

Looks like BSU has a recruiting pipeline to Canada, beating out Oregon State for their latest commit. Most of their Canadian recruits have been OL or DL.

Canadian safety Taylor Loffler committed to the Broncos on Tuesday, becoming the seventh player in the Class of 2011.

Loffler, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, plays quarterback and safety at Kelowna Secondary in British Columbia.

Loffler also had an offer from Oregon State, he said.

The Broncos have enjoyed success with several Canadian players in recent years, including offensive linemen Andrew Woodruff (British Columbia) and Jon Gott (Alberta), linebacker Josh Bean (Alberta) and defensive end Mike G. Williams (Alberta).

Current defensive linemen Michael Atkinson (Ontario) and Tyrone Crawford (Ontario) are from Canada.

  98. Garret July 2, 2010 1:03 pm

UH used to have several good basketball players from Canada but I can’t remember football players from Canada. With the Warriors like RGM and Owens having success in the CFL, maybe some Canadian high school players might be curious about UH?

That reminds me Garret. I like the way that coach Gib has put together his coaching staff. Gib has contacts in California, he has another coach that knows Brazil, and a third that knows Chicago. He just added another staff member with ties to Austrailia. I’m quite excited about the direction that the basketball program is going in. It’s kind of early to tell, but the program will be very good two to three years from now.

It does seem a little thin there, and it might get thinner. Tank Hopkins probably will redshirt.
I’m having a senior moment (or eight). Which corners did UH lose from last year? Because with Steven Christian back, and John Hardy and Dee Maggitt added, I would think thee would be more corners.

ai-eee-soos. The most interesting passenger in that Volkswagen Bug was Wilt Chamberlain. He was a little taller than Jim Mills. Yes he did fit in the front seat…barely. His knees were hanging on top of the little handle, that sat right above the glove compartment.

    #143 The Beast

Coach Mack wants him ready in January 2011 and for him to hit the books this summer and fall and load up. He said it would be too frustrating for him to be on the field and not get reps; better for him to train in the weight room and be ready to roll in January. Also, with him going to DE/LB he can continue to work on his speed and power…he’s at a solid 250 and is looking pretty good according to the Pac 5 coaches that saw him work out last week. He’ll be ready to battle for reps 1/1/11/…………….

Let’s continue to support ALL the Warriors in their quest for a victorious season!!!

  152. haka July 2, 2010 3:47 pm

  153. Bulla July 2, 2010 3:53 pm

    haka,

all the Warriors make us proud, being a student athlete is tough. they got these guys going from morning to night, and that is the biggest transition for HS players besides the speed of the game.

a former coach for Tennessee and USC (asst for LB’s i think) said that for some players, the game is too fast for them, a blur….and they’re always out of position….for others, it is like the movie ‘The Matrix’, and those are the playmakers. They have that 6th sense, always around the ball and they can ‘smell’ the play.

January 2011 will be awesome, but this 2010 season will be a challenging but rewarding season for our Warriors.

  163. OldDiver July 2, 2010 5:56 pm

We’re also saving up to open our own studio so, we really have to watch our expenses for a spell … my goal is to hopefully get season tickets for the 2011 season. I have a gut feeling that while this season will be a good one and a winning one, 2011 will really be the start of some really outstanding Warrior football on both Offense and Defense and I want to be in the Stadium for that.

That TD return came at a good time for Chad Owens, who had fumbled after a catch earlier in the game.

With a wider field in the CFL game, I think Chad is going to have many great returns in the weeks ahead.

    Go for it Chad!

    a full scale carnival/event is a great undertaking…

a little over twenty years ago i was involved in the planning one of the state’s bigger events. it takes many to pull it off. for this event, a cast of thousands was required along with many resources up front. it still runs today and it still takes thousands to pull off.

  230. Trisha Wayword July 15, 2010 8:36 am

I have been blogging since 2007. For years I made a few bucks here and there with Adsense and some affiliate sells, but I wasn’t making enough to quit the day job for sure. I tried getting traffic from Adwords, SEO, Yahoo, article marketing, social sites, and even email. The problem was that I just couldn’t get enough traffic to really make anything. Then I found out about a new way to buy traffic for so freaking cheap that it was nuts. I could then send that cheap traffic (for pennies!) to my blogs, get enough sales to realize a 1000% return on my investment, and suddenly my life was changed. I’m banking $300+ on a bad day now, and the future is looking way better. If you’re sick and tired of only getting a handful of visitors to your blog, check this site out. I’m not some stupid foreigner trying to sell crap on DP. This is LEGIT! You will go from a few dozen visitors a day to thousands! —> Blog Traffic Secret
