Sad to hear that former UH defensive back Kent Kafentzis, a cancer survivor, is enduring a medical setback.
His family is setting up a foundation in which donations will be used to pay for his medical expenses.

To help replace the loss of income from the Pigskin Pigout, which is on hiatus for a year, Na Koa is considering holding a telethon. Proceeds will be used to pay supplement summer school, the football training table, and some football-related positions.

Former UH players David Veikune, Isaako “Isaac” Sopoaga and Jake Ingram will be among the guests at the 2010 Hawaii Football Scholarship Dinner at the Honoluu Country Club.
The dinner will be held July 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tickets start at $150 apiece, and 10-seat tables may be purchased for between $1,500 and $5,000.
Proceeds help subsidize the cost of UH’s football camps.

wafan – I think you got it mixed up. Tylenol is worse on the liver. It’s easy to get the higher than recommended max daily dose, esp if you’re taking a prescription pain killer or cold drug that includes it. Max amount is 1g/dose or 4g/day.

Could Garret, ST or someone with an opinion that seems valid tell me why the WAC is such a pathetic conference? I realize that pathetic is a harsh word but really, it appears that of the so called major and mid- major conferences this one has no respect. I would guess that one question that stays with me in the matter is, “is UH the unattractive piece to the conference (largely die to the cost to travel)?” If we are indeed the entity that is holding the conference down, is it not a matter of time when the rest of the WAC will bolt to do something different just as they (BYU, Utah, etc.,) did in the past?
Really now, if this is “ugly just waiting to get uglier” should we not be more proactive in seeking contingencies as opposed to awaiting an inglorious fate…again.

I don’t think the WAC is that bad. In fact, I think it is a good, solid conference. The NFL and NBA have drawn quite a few players from the WAC.

Liked Dave Reardon’s article about Brian Ching. Only if…… I’ve known Brian and his whole family since Brian was a little boy. I give him credit for being a outstanding person, not just a soccer player. Even though not making the USA team was one of the worst feeling that he had to go through, he’s still taking it with class refusing to blame people. His father, Francis (Fongie) Ching worked for the HA a while back. Brian’s half sister is Tracie Ruiz, who won a gold medal in synchronized swimming in the Olympics back in the late 60’s or 70’s (sorry, too long ago, as I can’t remember). His mother and brothers are great people too. Hawaii, the USA soccer team, and the world will be wondering what if….. The USA forwards or strikers, Brian’s position, did not score a single goal during the World Cup in spite of having many opportunities. Too bad for them. nNo worry , Brian, Hawaii will always be here waiting for a great Hawaiian to come home.
Al: I’ll be at tomorrow’s CC. There’s plenty of parking on King Street across from First Hawaiian Bank – where Chunky’s used to be – if nothing is available on Isenberg Street or in the restaurant’s lot.

If the WAC is not bad, why is it no one wants to jump from their conference to join the WAC? Why is their power rating always looked upon as weak? Why does the WAC get but one or two invites (one being conference champion) to any NCAA competitions? In basketball, even the WCAC gets more respect than the WAC.
Please make an arguement for the WAC as I cannot see it at the moment.

I just think being in the WAC, such as it is, is better than going independent. And if the WAC is so weak, let’s see if UH can win the WAC championship. I don’t think the conference teams are all that easy to beat. If so, let’s see it happen!

Wish I could afford the tickets to next week’s fundraiser, but we just renewed our volleyball tickets yesterday and men’s basketball renewal deadline is about three weeks from now. We wanted to upgrade and move to the lower level, but our tickets would have gone from $255 for two to $595 for two.
I know, I know – gotta pay for the high costs of running these great programs, but I wish there were some upgrade prices which are at an intermediate level.
At least we were able to move down seven rows, but I hope that the view is not blocked by the waist-high metal railings at the bottom of the stars – not the lower railings in the middle of the rows

With Boise State leaving and the WAC unable to find a replacement, there is this feeling that the WAC has somehow become a diminished product. And, yes, losing Boise State will diminish the product.
But the reality is that for all of the shuffling, except for USC, all teams from the Rockies and westward have always had a diminished image. Think of the Heisman races, when Marshall Faulk lost out to Gino What’s-his-Name from Miami, or Ladainian Tomlinson barely getting any national love. (And, yes, I know Fort Worth is east of the Rockies, but TCU was in the WAC at the time.)
These days, we look back fondly on the old WAC. But the old WAC, of BYU and Utah and Air Force, still got limited love compared to the accomplishments. And UH fans don’t look back and remember those UH-Utah or UH-Wyoming games. They remember the BYU games and the Marshall Faulk games.
Trouble is you get a taste of the BCS life, and sometimes you think you’re better that you really are. I liken it to associate membership at Waialae Country Club, where you have limited access. Boise State has been to the BCS, but it never will be part of the BCS. Please, may I have your pass back before you leave. So, it’s OK to have BCS dreams; I have MegaBucks dreams all of the time. But at the end, I’m at the $5 blackjack table and the WAC and Mountain West still are not the SEC or Big Ten or, for that matter, the Big East.
If you’re a WAC or UH fan, you just make the most of it. Create your own rivalries. Enjoy the victories. And each fan should remember, it is about you. Do you really care if UH has nice academic facilities or great training room? I mean, uh, sure. But if you’re a fan, you care that you can get a good affordable and comfortable seat to an entertaining game. While it might be interesting if UH or the WAC has a good TV contract, what you really think is: Can I see every game I want to see on TV? And whether UH is $10 million in debt or $50 million in the hole, if they’re still playing games and the power hasn’t been turned off, then life goes on.
Anyone wanna bet that if Hawaii and our travel time and costs weren’t involved, the WAC would seem a little more appealing to other schools to join?
The only kind of plausible leverage we can muster, aside from offering travel subsides, is if we can really win in football and men’s basketball.
On a related note… Will Coach Coolen and Shoji offer some time to host coaching clinics to fellow UH coaches? 😎

The part of Ferd’s article that stood out to me the most was how North Texas turned down the WAC to stay in the *Sun Belt* conference. Wow.
When you think about it, the teams that broke away to form the MWC were going to pick the most attractive schools at that time for their conference. Then another group left for C-USA. So, there are fundamental problems with the schools left behind and not many attractive options to replace the losses…if not, those schools would have been invited to the MWC or C-USA.
UH and La Tech are a big problem for the conference in travel. Travel costs and time away from school due to travel time are issues that conferences need to worry about. The travel issue would be minimal for La Tech if they could join C-USA, but they aren’t attractive enough for C-USA to take them…so, if they aren’t good enough for C-USA *without* a travel problem, you can imagine how good they are for the WAC with a huge travel problem.
Both La Tech and North Texas have major facility upgrades going on…positioning themselves to get into the C-USA if the C-USA gets raided.
SJSU almost had to kill their Athletic program a few years ago and they have major financial limitations. They also are a commuter school with students that don’t care much about their athletic teams, which makes it hard to raise more money and get people to attend their games.
Utah State is small and has very limited growth possibilities due to the size of their school and the city where they are located. Their facilities will be smaller and their funding will be less because of that. That isn’t a big problem for basketball, but it is a big limitation for football.
Idaho has a lot of the same problems that Utah State has. Both Idaho and Utah State also have the problem of being in states where other schools are clearly above them in fan interest.
NMSU has had to cut $3 million from their already underfunded Athletic Department. Their TV market is small and their growth possibilities are limited. When you have to ask your fans to bring juice boxes and snacks to practices because you cannot afford to feed your players after practice and *then* you cut $3 million from your budget, you are really being squeezed.
Nevada is one of the 3 strongest teams left in the WAC and they had to cut both skiing teams and may have to cut another sport soon. They are being hurt by budget cuts due to the state of Nevada’s situation.
Fresno State is running a deficit and is having to take money from their endowment to pay their bills…and they are probably the WAC school left (I’m excluding BSU in this) in the strongest financial situation with their facility condition, donor strength, and endowment.
UH has a deficit that grows every year, big travel cost and time burden, and does not bring the TV ratings it used to. The value of the late-night ESPN time slot has been discussed a lot here, but ESPN could show UH games in that time slot for free and chose *not* to this season…they picked the season opener in order to show USC, not for UH.
This was probably more brutal than I should be. There is a reason why Fresno State, Nevada, and UH would back-stab any of the others to get into the MWC if they could. Try to forget about the lack of TV revenue and travel costs…the WAC could raise a lot of money if they had basketball success like the MWC, WCC, or Big West. But WAC schools seem to lose the opening round basketball games far too often in the tournament, and that costs every WAC school a lot of money.
If you want to look deeper into the problem, you have to look at the communities where each school is located. A booming economy there means that there are alumni with money in their pockets and companies looking to donate to the school in their area. Is Oahu’s economy booming? Reno’s? Ruston’s?
From what I can tell, the *only* WAC city that has a growing high-tech economy is Boise. That means that BSU grads working at those companies are earning 6-figures and those companies can donate to BSU. When a high-tech company (Micron) in Boise can buy (this happened last month) one of their competitors for $1.2 billion, they are just going to keep expanding. Micron recruits a lot of their workers from BSU…which University are those new graduates going to donate to?

Quick history:
In 1992, UH wins a share of the WAC title, then defeats Illinois in the Holiday Bowl. After that, the mid-WAC schools decide that to remain competitive, they needed to upgrade. So schools, like Utah and New Mexico, invest heavily in their football programs.
Now:
The same sort of commitment needs to be made by WAC schools, and schools that want to be WAC schools. But that’s not easy in these economic times.

Every sport has a *maximum* number of scholarships that they can give. UH cannot simply give more scholarships to one of their women’s sports since they already max out the number of women’s scholarships that have.
If you think about it, the maximums are GOOD for UH. Otherwise, certain Pac-10, SEC, and Big 10 schools could give out twice the number of women’s softball scholarships and make it impossible for UH to compete.

UH is cutting everything it can without affecting the on-field product too much.
The times where schools could invest more were the golden days…now, the budgets are getting squeezed from all ends.

And given the cutbacks and financial problems, it would be unreasonable for the California I-AA schools to consider an upgrade unless moving up would guarantee prosperity.
La Tech announced their facility upgrade campaign. This is good for the WAC…except that they are doing this to make themselves more attractive to the C-USA.

I don’t think North Texas wants to deal with trips to California, either.
All of the $20 million will come from private donors and they already have $9 million of it. Terry Bradshaw is one of the big donors and is on the leadership team that is getting the rest of the money.
Nevada cut the ski team last year. To me that was smart and prudent.
College sports programs that are “restrictive” to the specific location and or culture of that school that offers it is something that should be looked at in cutting if things ever get that bad.
Like with Boise State and their rodeo program, sports like these should be reduced to the “club level” as there is no national collegiate platform or “stage” for programs like these to compete in.
Not sure what Nevada is looking at cutting or what the second sport was that they did cut, but they should think about the sports that would effect their chance at national exposure.
I’m thinking this whole problem is rooted in that there is no playoff system.
They hired a *very* good company to take charge of this work.

It’s interesting for the WAC (and MWC) that the money-maker is a BCS bowl. But for BCS conferences, because they already are guaranteed BCS bowl money, their growth comes from TV revenue.

Look what happened with the NCAA men’s tournament. That is an awesome playoff system far more equitable than is possible with football since you cannot play 2 games every week in a football playoff.
The disparity between what the “haves” get in basketball money compared to the WAC is MORE than the disparity in football! The *regular-season* football games is where the money is and a playoff system would do nothing to change that. Going back to the old bowl system would be worse for the WAC and UH. Going to a playoff system would not change the fact that regular-season money dwarfs postseason money. If the football playoff system paid in a similar manner as basketball (wins equals dollars), then the WAC would be in worse shape than the current BCS system where more dollars are guaranteed than the WAC ever got from the Bowl system.

It’s hard to make everybody happy. If the SEC goes off on one those Saint Louis School-like runs, there will be things done to level the playing field. I mean, for all of the millions generated — and spent — when schools complain about the cost and advantages/disadvantages of producing media guides, there are cracks in the infrastructure.

This is not correct. The MWC makes *far* more money from their TV deal than they make when their teams make a BCS bowl. ESPN offered the MWC far more money than they offered the WAC in the last round and you know they will be determined to outbid everyone for the MWC when their TV contract is up. That would eliminate the late night time slot for the WAC…
Becoming a BCS AQ conference would give the MWC schools somewhere between $700k to $1 million more per year. SDSU gets $10 million from student fees and $1.3 million from TV. When you are talking about Athletic Departments with revenues of $30 million or so, how can an extra $700k be considered the money-maker?

If I were running the show, I’d move the basketball and volleyball coaches into the Stan Sheriff Center.
And I definitely would fix up the Koa Anuenue offices, complete with refreshment area and gifts. They always say recruiting is the lifeblood of a program. Well, Koa Anuenue, as the chief fund-raiser, is the lifeblood of the athletic department. AKA is recruiting donors; it should have the best resources and best image.
I heard that the football office needs a secretary. State can’t afford one full-time. I say we allow volunteers. I’m sure Koakane would volunteer to answer phones and take messages for free.

If UH does that, then the MWC will be forced to add UH to get/keep their AQ status. So, not only would the state of Hawaii rally behind UH (bringing more money), the system would basically force UH into a BCS AQ conference. That in turn would get the fans even more excited, especially playing teams like BYU, UNLV, SDSU, and BSU.
I think I speak for a few or if not, most of the regulars here when I say that it’s a little different from our perspective.
Some fans can understand that success is built from the top and then trickles down.
For many of us, it’s HARD to sit in the stands or watch a game knowing the infrastructure is shakey at best because ultimately, it effects the longterm stability of the programs we cheer for.
Sure, on game day all the budget and facility stuff is not taken into consideration but in reality if we cannot do what we can (i.e. join booster clubs etc…) to assist in some fiscal way towards the programs we go to see every season, then there will be nothing to look forward to.
This causes some unnecessary worry and sleepless nights for some of us, but to us it’s all related.

I should add that there are efforts to change things, involving the Legislature, private businesses, and other entities. My wife is getting annoyed with all the time I’m spending on this (especially since nobody is getting paid to work on it), but if one or both of these things actually happen, UH will be in decent shape.
That would free up more space on the 3rd floor and does make a lot of sense in general.

I worked on the Koa Anuenue accounts when I was still at UH for the Promotions Dept under Dick Fishback…that was a long, long time ago and those old offices were new back then 🙂
The one thing I like about WAC/MWC cities is they’re pretty easy to navigate, even though I’m GPS-challenged.
Salt Lake City is perhaps the most amazing. it’s built on a grid, with streets like 100 South, 200 South.

Gee, I haven’t been to the beach since 2000. When I was single, I used to go every weekend.
North Texas turned the WAC down in 2004 because their overall situation back then didn’t warrant the move. But now with their new bigger and better stadium to be completed soon and their increased student activity fees (Dig this: The student body (30,000) voted to raise their own activity fee to the maximum $20 per credit allowed.) they may be primed to make a move.

Funny story about greenpeace.. Well not really them but this local organization that helps keep people away from Monk Seals that come up on shore.
A friend told me that while they were camping last year, a Hawaiian Monk Seal came up and was lounging around on the sand. Within a few minutes a group of volunteers set up a barrier around it and a sign was posted.
The sign said there were two basic rules about approaching resting Hawaiian Monk Seals:
1) Don’t go near the seal.
2) Don’t poke the seal.
…. Now… doesn’t rule one take care of rule two?
Unless someone fashions a long “poking” device out of chopsticks? 😆

I could live with the WAC staying with the same 8 teams. But should even 1 of the WAC teams leave for greener pastures or even fold because of financial difficulties, I would prefer Hawaii going independent. Yes, I know that it would be hard to schedule teams, but by adding Portland State, Cal Davis, etc., nothing that has been said has convinced me to do back flips in joy. By going indep. we could add more home games to make more money, even if we may have to supplement some of the costs for teams coming here. Who said that we have to schedule 13 football games a year. If it works out, fine, but thinking of the STUDENT first, by being in Hawaii, maybe it would be alright to have just 12 (8 home, 4 away or 9 home 3 away) games, with all the missed classes and studies. We may already be taking steps toward that direction or maybe even making sure our future games are at least partially covered by talking with Navy for home and home games in football in the future. Is Army and Notre Dame next? We already played or will play them. If the WAC folds, the remaining teams may be forced to be independent too or even some of them folding their football team thus freeing up more independent teams. With other lesser income sports, including women’s sports, maybe Hawaii should look into a conference like the WCC, Big West, etc.. The WAC’s caliber in women’s volleyball (money maker) and softball (future money maker) seem to bring the wahine to a lower level. The WCC men’s basketball teams are very competitive and are probably making big bucks with their appearances in the NCAA tournament. Does anybody even want us? Hopefully, yes, if we start winning.

The Rainbow Wahine volleyball team has shown season in and season out that they could hang with the best in the nation and recently the Wahine softballers did the same.
While the softball team doesn’t share the exact same consistent streak of WAC titles as the volleyball ladies do, they (softball) have the potential to be the new Fresno State of WAC softball.
For both programs, no can help who we must play every season in conference play. It’s disappointing that WAC women’s volleyball is almost non-existant.

Gigi – you asked about Stretch. Saw Stretch last night when I was going to a photo club meeting. He and his Mom, Stretchette and one other was going to a wine tasting(?) at KCC. He was instrumental in setting up the Tsaiko fund with UHF and donated a bunch of change to start it up. Unfortunately he cannot make the CC tomorrow as he commutes to work to Kauai. He was wearing his UH and is still active behind the scenes helping UH.
A-JOE = still posts from time to time. Have not seen him lately at the CCs but again, I don’t attend too often either.

It’s all relative. The academic facilities, training facilities, lockers, weight room… these are selling points to get the recruits we want PLUS help to maintain their physical and intellectual edge.
That good TV contract nets us more funds at the end of each season, thus allowing us to up our competitive bar higher and higher each year, and not grow stagnant and complacent. We can’t afford to allow our University to fall THAT deeply into debt, otherwise everything would be shut down, not just athletics. We have to put forth the effort to improve our Cash Cow(s), to realize consistently greater gains. If you starve Lani Moo… do you still think you’ll get milk from her? Everyone drinks from that container of milk… not just the athletes.

Saw the Utah State has UH for its homecoming game on October 23. Last year they arrived in HNL the day before the game. HC Gary Anderson said that the Hawaii game would be like any other game and got badly beaten at Aloha.
Crazy idea, but what about building a 45K stadium (along the lines of Utah’s Rice Eccles) in the lower campus with bleacher style seating, (oh, my aching okole from the termite palace days), throughout, except in the premium sections? Would cut construction and maintenance costs. Also, UH needs to build luxury boxes as a means of generating more profits for the program. Funding would have to come from big shot donors and aggressive fund raising targeting the private sector.

We’ve discussed the issue of a new stadium many times and quite frankly, no other area can address the traffic situation better than the current location. With the Rail plan in the works, Aiea/Halawa still provides the best scenario for a centralized locale with doable access and egress. There is ample room to build upwards and two strip malls in the area that could easily be redeveloped to build an exceptional Sports Multiplex/retail rail stop center.
The Stadium has to be more than a single sport facility. It has to be able to serve a multitude of purposes to be cost effective and provide some kind of return of investment.
If the sportscaster is our usual Tsaiko sportscaster, I hope Maple Garden has enough fuuuuud!!

Hawaii needs to align itself with Fresno and Nevada to earn entry in the MWC. Sell the potential of a 12 team league with 2 divisions. Western Division UNLV, SDSU, BSU, FSU, NEVADA, UH. Eastern Division CSU, WYO, AF, BYU, TCU, NM.
The 3 universities to work on a package seeking entry with less share of the pie initially. UH to subsidize part of the travel cost. UNLV and the Boyd Group to help to get them in. Rivalries are there and could be bigger and better as time goes on. If these 3 universities are about equal in their position today they should create an alliance and work together for entry. The other schools have not done anything to bring the WAC up and has held the overall conference back to a great degree. The eastern division of the MWC would surely not mind playing in Hawaii once every 4 years. Meaning cross conference games with 3 schools rotating.
Positives will be a championship game in football, and others if they so choose to do so.
There was a suggestion before somewhat like this and I believe this would be an avenue to explore.

You bring up some good and valid points regarding the location of the stadium. In terms of providing a return in the investment, I think that Aloha Stadium is currently being underutilized in terms of “other events” there. What other events are held at Aloha, besides the Swap Meet and 50th State Fair (both in the parking lot)? Not sure if those two events are enough to generate enough income to maintain the facility. Same for the SSC. But that’s a whole different subject.
For the amount of money being spent to prop up Aloha Stadium, you could conceivably construct a new stadium in the lower campus. Minnesota’s TCF Bank stadium cost $288 million. Nothing like that on-campus feel.
BTW, does anyone know if they are going to paint that section of the Stadium in green?
Thanks ST, Garret. Great responses. I think Kazz’s #125 summarizes why I ask. I don’t want UH to be left at home. IF BSU did what they did to totally assure themselves that they would not be left at home, smart on them to ask (beg) twice (first to the WAC then to MWC).
I only hope that with BSU gone and the stature of the WAC diminished, even if UH wipes out the competition as stated by others, those will remain significant. And while I believe that time is not on our side, we have no alternative but to win, win big and win often, and maybe, just maybe, the travel to Hawaii won’t be such a huge barrier as it appears to be when talks of inclusion into a conference arrises.

Remember though, the pie will be split 12 ways, reducing the current MWC teams’ income. Will they go for that? Maybe, for a bigger TV contract.

Some programs will be left behind and I share your feeling that we really don’t want UH to be in that group.

I’ve been hoping for a Fresno/Nevada/UH alliance for quite some time, but the system doesn’t work that way. The #1 priority for the MWC is to boost their chances to get/keep AQ status. Nevada and Fresno might not hurt their BCS chances much (though the MWC would go *down* by adding them), but UH’s record the past 2 years makes it death to the MWC’s BCS AQ hopes if they add UH.
If Fresno/Nevada/UH told the MWC that it was all or nothing, they would turn to Houston and others. Even the threat of that would result in Fresno and Nevada dropping UH from their partnership.
I really feel that the expansion of the WAC from West to South East is it’s future. We may be the lower tier of FBS but that doesn’t mean we can’t have great games and cultivate fans and a marketable commodity. To do that, the WAC needs to include more geography. Get it’s name onto more TV sets at all times of the day in all sports. Build it into a brand name and try to excel in the other regularly televised sports. It’s all about packaging and marketing. The bigger your audience the bigger the network $$.
The real tragedy would be if, after Boise State departs, UH can’t fill the void.

If as you say UH does not fill the void, we would have sealed our own fate. There would be no arguing any point for conference membership at the D-1 level. Too many barriers to acceptance would keep us out of any conversation, aside from the WAC, that is, if Mr. Benson is truly an advocate for our inclusion in the conference.
I cringe at the thought of our going 5-8 this year in football, but as much as I love UH football, if it is not meant to be, then maybe we become like the WCAC where it’s venues other than football (yikes!). IT’ll probably deplete the department tremendously or completely as the remaining sports simply could not generate enough revenue to keep all floating.

I agree with ST–some school will win the WAC after BSU leaves and will earn the BCS points needed to be attractive to the MWC. If that is UH, great. If not, some other school will be happy to fill the void left by BSU.

That’s kind of what I fear.. That we will chuck the RnS if we don’t succeed with it this year.. at least insofar as getting us to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. I like that we have established ourselves as a RnS school these past 12 years. That’s how you build a reputation. Just got to get more consistent in recruiting and developing the talent and winning. But that takes finding the right combination of coaches, assitant coaches, grad assistants, and student managers. Each has to come up the ranks and keep the program alive and well.

About the Stadium. Here in Hawaii we don’t have those big corporation/business that can put money up front to build a New Stadium like they do on the mainland. What we have is alot of Military Personnel. So why not go independent and play in the Armed Forces League. Then maybe the Federal Government will build a New Stadium for the University of Hawaii.
If Daniel Inouye really wanted to do something for the State building a New Stadium would be nice.
I am not a big fan of bench seating at stadiums, even if they are cheaper. I need back support with preferably lots of leg room, too.
For me, though, nothing can beat a reclining sofa, air conditioning, and a large screen TV.

Will be entering his 3rd season in 2010; has recruited, alibit a compressed one his first year, 3 classes; his first class is only now entering the playing field; 2nd class is now entering their “red-shirt” freshman year; 3rd class in still —–, well still—? and, throw in the transfers and still—?
Can we really say that this year, 2010, his 3rd year is really the $$$ year? That would be really tough. I would say 5th year is the $$$ year because all 3 recruiting class will be on the field including, probably, a few true freshmen and red-shirt freshmen.
??? will the powers to be look at this this way or say, “he had 3 years” and fire him if 2010 is a bust. In reality, the juniors and seniors on the field in 2010 were recruited by JJ the year BEFORE” he bolted for SMU. IMHO, this is still JJ’s players and I know others will disagree with me as Coach Mack had a hand in recruiting before JJ left.
Yet, the old axiom, the leader is responsible for all things – good or bad. If Coach Mack is unable to “meld” the units into a cohesive team, then the question is is Coach Mack HC material? Perhaps, this will be the pivatol factor IF JD decides to terminate the 5-year contract after year #3.
If so, then the new HC will be faced with the same situation of the first 3-years will be players recruited by the prior coach. If this new coach “bombs”, then what?
A contrarium(sp) situation is men’s basketball where Coach Gib will have some of his recruits on the floor in 2010, year #1, and nearly or all his recruits on the floor by his 2nd year. Then, I will agree that after 3 years and the team does not win, then it’s time to consider hiring a new coach.

A House the recruits are JJ staff recruits, including Mac, they run the R N S, same offense without JJ calling the plays, Ron Lee served a year as O.C., Rolo played in the R N S, the players were recruited with the R N S in mind, so why does Mac get a pass to year 5. So can anyone coming tomorrow be able to read the cards and ouija board?

what with all this realignment talk, it is imperative above all else to win. winning places you in a position to negotiate, a position to dictate reason, and a position to make choices.
should we go south of .500 again with not much hope on the horizon…how long should they wait?

if we are left out in the cold, meaning the wac while others start to matriculate to mwc, c-usa, and any other new conferences where you are a step away from more $$$$. how long does the university wait?
jd is a businessman and a former football guy. i know he has a feel for what we need and if that isn’t happening then jd has to do the right thing. mind you that mack is not jd’s hire so there won’t be so much sentiment.

Al, can UH afford to pay Mack the remaining 2 years of his contract if they let him go after the 3rd year? Plus pay the next coach big bucks? I thought JD wanted to lessen the deficit, not increase it.
The Pac-10’s commissioner is still hoping that Texas will join their conference.
I’d say no matter what, Mack will play out 4 years. If he gets us to a bowl game this year or next, he gets his 5th year. If he gets us to a bowl game in his 4th year with an impressive win/loss record, he gets an extra year… get us to two bowl games in the next three years and he gets a roll over. Win the WAC and he gets a bonus and negotiating powers.
Hinshaw did the right thing, she moved things along, removed the bureaucracy to hire a new coach, she listened to the movers and shakers of Hawaii politics, the former staff, and she went with their recommendation, hire MacMakin and she pushed it. I don’t fault her, some bloggers are claiming in these bad times that coach Mac is her hire, technically, yes, but she made a difference on how things are being done at UH and she should be commended for her proactive stance. Who would have thought that Mac would be over his head as a HC, like he said, “this isn’t P.E. football,” and now for two seasons people are asking the same questions, whose making the calls during game time, watching the clock and calling time outs, etc.

If UH is left behind, its because we are 2500 miles out in the Pacific; Travel expenses and time away from school will be the “excuses” used by the others who will not invite UH to the round table. Yet, has anyone made a survey on length of travel and time away from classes versus traveling to other destinations such as Wyoming. There is a lot of down time waiting for connecting planes and bus rides to no where.

Na Wahine does it very year as does the VB team, but the men’s teams seem to have trouble adjusting to time changes and elevation. is this a women’s thing? are they more adapable? are men “weaker” in this area?
after this season, if we finish with a 7-6 record and make the Sheraton Bowl, I am hoping that JD doesn’t get giddy and overly anxious to roll over Mac contract. Cuz his overall record would be 20-20 and the bowl game would be the tie breaker, a winning record or a losing record. Can we do better that 7-6, I would hope so but every publication think otherwise. Like AJoe says, no matter what they think, we going strap it up and play to win.

I thought that Mack was a reasonable hiring choice at the time. However, I remember thinking (and posting) two concerns back then:
1. UH didn’t include a buyout clause, something that is standard in D-IA head football coaching contracts. UH didn’t protect themselves which didn’t make sense to me. Even if UH won the WAC the past two seasons I would still be bothered about that…because it set a precedent that I thought was bad.
2. UH overpaid. I know that ST says that Mack’s agent asked for $1.1 million, but UH didn’t have to just give Mack was his agent first asked for. UH is always budget-constrained and paying *far* above the market rate back then hurts UH. Offering what JJ earned ($800k) with $300k in incentives (for example $100k for winning the WAC, $100k for making the Hawaii Bowl, other incentives tied to attendance figures) would have made sense.
Or UH should have convinced Mack that his long-term success would have been better served by taking $100k less if that entire $100k would be applied to increasing the recruiting budget. There are a lot of ways in which UH could significantly upgrade the program (recruiting budget, compliance officer, training facilities, etc.) with money…UH cannot afford to overspend.

A House if a team is good they normally will win on the road and at home. Na Wahine in VB and SB are cases in point. Look at all the good teams that have beaten us at the Stadium, winning is not guaranteed, but they have won quite often. Could we have beaten some of them, sure, but we didn’t and they were on the road, favored, and won. So were got to be a better ball club to win on the road, mediocrity leads to more defeats than wins.
Personally speaking, UH CANNOT afford to retain a football head coach that would have 3 losing seasons with no promise of better ones in the following two.
Should it all go to heck after this football season then Jim Donovan will have ANOTHER difficult choice to look at.
The public demand and threat of losing season ticket holders for football will be greater than for baseball and for basketball. Business-wise, the choice should be easier.
A lot of money was spent on those football offices and again, if it all goes to heck after this season, you will need to supply substance to those offices.

IMHO, Mack has to win this year. Not only are do we have to win with regards to alignment, but we are running the same system on both offense and defense since before Mack was the head coach. This means that there should have been less of a learning curve.
Mack had a hand in recruiting the vast majority of the players on the defensive side since he was here for the 2007 season while JJ was the head coach. Mack also recruited a bunch of JC recruits in his first two years; many of which are seniors this year and are expected to contribute substantially (Davis, Bradley, Hopkins, Heun, Blount, Bryant, Enos, Green, Dimude, LaCount, Henry, etc.).
After a quick glance, at least half of the seniors on the team came here during Mack’s tenure. I also believe more than 2/3 of the scholarship players are Mack’s recruits or walk-ons that Mack gave a scholarship to. This is the payoff year.
I’m sorry but I’ll stand up right now and say it. If we cannot make a Hawaii Bowl this season and win that too then we need a new football coach and send the ultimate message across the board.
This is NOT just for the survival of the UH Football program, but ALL and I repeat A-L-L of UH athletics involved.
Again, we do NOT need to be reminded that the smaller income and non income generating sports have carried their weight in the same years that UH football has struggled in the last two and as a supporter of all of UH athletics I cannot stomach the fate of hunderds of UH student athletes at the hands of someone not capable and getting paid a hefty salary.
But of course if we win, go to the Hawaii Bowl and win that game as well, then different story.
One problem for UH earning enough BCS points is that you don’t earn many points with the computer rankings if you play bad teams. The WAC’s nonconference record has been horrible, which hurts UH. Nevada and Fresno tried to play good teams and couldn’t pull out the nonconference wins that the WAC needed. The bottom of the WAC schedule paycheck games that help their bottom line but hurt their computer ratings, which hurts the WAC’s computer rating.
I’ll use the Massey ratings (one of the BCS computer rakings) to give an idea of where some teams that UH has scheduled ranked last year:
71 UNLV (this would have been much lower if UH had pulled off the win)
85 Colorado
87 Utah State
90 La Tech
105 Army
107 SJSU
117 NMSU
Wahine Volleyball’s constant success and ability to challenge some of the better funded teams that just got into women’s volleyball within the last decade is a testament to the foundation built by Dave Shoji, past assistants, and past players.
The appeal and the true tradition already built into the program and the home game atmosphere in the arena when the Wahine are playing is the SAME exact “feel” we all see when we are watching Penn State football or Duke Basketball.
The foundation was there.
When Wahine Volleyball was winning national titles in the 80’s and whatnot, the BCS schools didn’t join in until years and decades later, so UH was able to do what they did, thus securing the foundation and tradition we enjoy to this day that helps bring fans out and good recruits to the program.

But in the grand scheme of things nobody really cares about anything but football. Football is the thing that makes an athletic department go. Plain and simple.
If people cared about anything else, UH would be in a much better place then they see themselves in right now. Win and win big is the only answer.
Garret #1 Hinshaw took the recommendation of her peers, she oversees the UHAD and its AD as Chancellor, but she was new on the job and wanted to make changes on how things were done at the UH. To her fault, she trusted the advise from her peers, the people surrounding the UH athletic department, and made the call. UH has an inhouse lawyer for contracts, was she proactive (the lawyer-it was a female after Kirimitsu left for St. Louis), there had to someone in the AD office or close to UHAD who could have jumped in brought up talking points. On #2 everyone surrounding UH athletics including the fans stated that UH got to dig dipper in their pocketbook and not let manini money be the sole reason we can’t get a good coach. Hinshaw came up with the money, the plundits pointed to Mac, he is the man, no one said he wasn’t a million dollar man, only in hindsight with a mediocre record that we blink and second guess ourselves and think, oops, we paid too much. (I know, lots of commas, so Wassup, don’t send me corrections and a grade) It wasn’t then, it (contract) was heralded as a break through in upping the payroll for coaches even when we couldn’t afford it.

You are right. Many people were concerned about Coach Mack’s pricetag and didn’t necessarily point out that he may have been over his head in a head coaching position.
Seems like if Coach Mack was getting paid somewhere around the 500K to 700K mark that they would have been more accepting of him if he produced the 7-7 and 6-7 season results as opposed to him getting paid over a million. Of course this is contradictory to “winning is everything”.

I hope that UH fans cheer for *all* WAC teams (except BSU) in their nonconference games this season. There are several important reasons why WAC teams need to win their nonconference games:
1. Every nonconference win provides a boost to the computer ranking of that team, which directly benefits UH when UH plays them in conference.
2. The BCS gives $9 million to the non-AQ conferences to split any way they want (this is in addition to the money earned if a non-AQ team makes a BCS game). The non-AQ conferences decided to split up the money based on how well each conference did in their nonconference games. So, the MWC gets the biggest share of that money and the Sun Belt gets the least. Every nonconference loss by a WAC team costs UH money, every win earns UH money.

3. The WAC plays something like 11 games against the MWC this season. If the WAC wins those games, they prevent the MWC from getting AQ status and take the MWC’s top spot for the BCS money. If the MWC sweeps those games, they increase their chances of getting AQ status and they could push the WAC’s revenue even lower.
When I think about it, I spend MORE dollars at other UH sports than I do for football, yet I only have season tickets in football as those are the games I can be sure to be at since they are all on Saturdays.
My season tickets are only $99.00 for the North end zone orange level and I don’t buy food at the stadium because it sucks and UH doesn’t get a cut.
For the other UH sports, I shell out game to game tickets at full price. Easily in one basketball season plus one Wahine and men’s volleyball season each, I would be spending more on those than all of football plus merchandise combined.
But again, the reason I mention that is, it’s well-known to all of us that football is the machine that drives it all.
But as we’ve all said, football MUST win now more than ever to keep the whole “car” running.
The BIGGEST picture of all is if football wasn’t around, then I want everyone that has enjoyed the victories and great moments from other UH sports like the BYU win in men’s basketball, Wahine volleyball’s NCAA appearances and annual upsets over higher ranked teams, the Wahine softball team’s NCAA appearances and recent upset over Alabama and take all those emotions and pride and throw them away in the trash because they might not have happened if the money machine that is football wasn’t around.
Bottom line for me is, if someone forced me to go back in time and pick and choose if I had to erase the memory of the entire 2007 football season over all the other great memories and moments in other UH sports, then I’d rather have NONE at all. To me it’s like asking to pick out which of my kids (if I had any) would I chose over in a life and death situation. I’d rather take death upon myself. I don’t want just one, I want them ALL!!!
More is at stake here than just football and the administrators and all involved with decisions being made for UH athletics better realize this.
Jim Donovan said that UH athletics is the “front porch” for the visibility of the university on a national scale. Let’s see him maintain that image when it’s time to really clean up the porch.
Certainly a lot of if this or if that today. If’s ain’t gonna help us this year. The team needs our positive karma. Like Garret says, “we need to win now” and have to play with who we have. If we don’t win now we may not have a program to speak of in the future. It’s too late for if’s.
Na Wahine VB season ticket renewal ended yesterday, I wonder when they will announce season tickets available for first time buyers? Does the faculty, staff and students come first in ticket purchases before any newbie steps up to the plate. We had a terrific season last year, final four, should have been beating the drums for renewals and done it months ago. UHAD got to get the rest of the public in tune and hyped to join the band wagon, late better than never. McNamara, I hope you read the blog, your kuleana is external income, and I hope season tickets is part of the job description, otherwise, who is in charge.
But getting back to A-House’s general question…
I have no clear reason or theory as to why UH’s women’s programs have had more success than our men’s.

You are correct that Chancellor Hinshaw was new to the job and she came from UC-Davis so she didn’t have experience with D-IA football contracts. The people who advised her let her down…a simple Google search will turn up websites that provide the entire contracts for most D-IA football coaches. UH could have spent 5 minutes to make sure they weren’t forgetting anything.
I *never* thought that UH needed to throw the money at Mack like they did. UH does need to spend more money, but they didn’t need to overspend in a way that doesn’t help them on the field. Mack earning $800k or $1.1 million doesn’t make the team win any extra games…but UH having $100k extra for recruiting would build the program. They basically gave Petersen (BSU) money without the years of success Petersen had at BSU to get raises up to that point.
I told many people on the day that the dollar figures were revealed that UH overspent. Hinshaw didn’t come up with the money–she just committed the Athletic Department to spend the money (while she also expects UH AD to balance the budget). It isn’t like anyone at UH got donors to cover half of the contract like they did for JJ.
No matter if UH had great success or not over the past 2 years, the money they overspent hurts the program. That is less money for recruiting, facilities, training, etc. The criticism of Mack would also be much less if the base had been lower and incentives added.
Do you honestly think that Mack would have turned down $800k? Or even $500k with up to $500k in incentives…UH could have made many incentives fairly easy to reach (no APR penalty, basic attendance numbers) while others would have been true performance measures (conference title, bowl game). The public would then view Mack as earning his money instead of focusing on $1.1 million guaranteed.

I’m sure if UH finished 12-2 the last two years including wins in the Sheraton Bowls and attendance was legitimately in the mid 40K none of us would be discussing mac’s salary as being too high. The rewards of winning and the additional revenue generated by a winning team would have paid for recruiting, etc. But we didn’t win big, we are 13-14 over 2 years and naysayers sports publication are giving us a slim chance of success, finishing anywhere from 5 to 8 place. Winning is the issue, we haven’t won enough and often enough.

McNamara doesn’t have the responsibility of season tickets. I believe I was told that Vince Baldemor does. The person who is the supervisor of the ticket sales office handles the day of game sales. It’s a bit strange the way that’s handled.

Vince Baldemor is with the UH Foundation. I believe Koa Anuenue. Since season tickets include a premium which is a donation to the Athletics programs, I believe that’s the reason he’s involved.

Coach Coolen tweets from Colorado. He probably taking in the Colorado Fireworks tournament. Two of his 2010 recruits are participating with the SD Legacy 18U team. Three teams from Hawaii are there, Kamikaze, Kaikamahine, and the Pearls. The Pearls are also in the 16U where Coolen will be spending his time, the 18’s are pretty much finished in their recruiting.

It was good to see gigi-hawaii back today. Those that do not recall her should know that she was one of the builders and contributors to the blog community here and one it’s most colorful denizens. She carried the title of “blog “Social Director” (Al was the “Restaurant Boss”). Together they are responsible for the Tsai-ko’s meeting in person in the formative days of The Warrior Beat.
Those that know what the Tsai-ko Battle ensign looks like, will know why this song is dedicated to gigi…again…

What a nice tribute! Thanks, Steve. I napped between 8:30 and 10:00 and am now wide awake.
I remember meeting you and Peaches for the 1st time at the 2nd WB party — this time in Feb 2007 at Ryan’s. I even took your picture, and I think I posted it on my blog. Fun time! Sun God was there and, of course, ST. 27 attended.
The 1st WB party was held in Dec 2006 at Murphy’s. Seventeen attended that first one.
The 3rd party was again held at Murphy’s in 2007 — so many people attended that the place was bursting at its seams.
Then there was that HUGE bash at the Stan Sheriff Center in 2008. Jim and Tracy Donovan were there and I remember ST, JD, and others performed the Haka. That was an event to remember.
In between and since those parties, there have been CCs, karaoke, and tailgates at Richardson Field prior to the games.
It’s amazing how people just come together because of the Warrior Beat and our great football team!
