DJ gets the call

By Stephen Tsai on July 20, 2010

The past two months, slotback DJ Armbrust has worked out each weekday on the Manoa campus. Some days, he will pester a quarterback to throw passes. Some days, another receiver or DB will serve as quarterback. Word of Armbrust’s dedication spread. Yesterday, Armbrust said he was invited to participate in training camp, which begins Aug. 4. “I’m really happy,” said Armbrust, who had been scheduled to join the team Aug. 23, the first day of UH’s fall semester when rosters […]

Want to make Kazz sad?

By Stephen Tsai on July 19, 2010

Avis has selected … Homey. Homey wins the poster. Text me at 256-0223 and we’ll figure out delivery. * * * * * There is a game within a game during 11-on-11 drills. If the offense makes a first down, all of the defensive players have to do 10 push-ups. If the defense forces a turnover or prevents a first down, every offensive player does 10 push-ups. But no matter which side wins (or loses), Tommy Heffernan will do 10 […]

It shouldn’t be over

By Stephen Tsai on July 18, 2010

It would be a waste if the athletic department, receiving a windfall that will keep gusting — about $1.8 million annually in student fees — believes there aren’t more financial rocks to overturn. Securing the athletics fee is a significant step, but there’s more to go to whittling an eight-figure IOU to the school. The athletic department still should pursue a larger cut of parking, concessions and H-logo merchandise. One of our readers also suggests that the athletic department: • […]

Linebacker recruit makes easy adjustment

By Stephen Tsai on July 17, 2010

A year ago, Siaki Cravens left Utah, which will join the Pac-10 in the near future. Now he is an outside linebacker for the Warriors. Second thoughts? “No regrets at all,” Cravens said. “Nothing against Utah, but it wasn’t a good fit for me. I moved on. I’m 10 times happier here than in Utah, and I’ve only been here a week Definitely no regrets. I love it here. This was one of the best decisions I made.” Cravens had […]

Masoli, Pa’aluhi won’t join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 16, 2010

Two former standout Pac-10 players — quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and linebacker David Pa‘aluhi — will not be joining the Warriors this year, according to people with close knowledge of the situation. Both had contacted UH. But it was mutually decided Masoli would not join the Warriors, according to sources. Pa‘aluhi, who was set to sign enrollment papers at UH, instead  reaffirmed a previous commitment to enlist in the military with the intent of joining Special Forces. Masoli, who was raised […]

Regents approve athletics fee

By Stephen Tsai on July 15, 2010

The Board of Regents today approved a measure that would impose a $50-per-semester athletics fee on all UH-Manoa students. In exchange, students will be able to use school IDs to gain free admission to all UH home sporting events. The fee will be implemented Jan.1, although students are expected to be able to earn free admission starting in mid-September. The athletic department is expect to earn $2 million annually from the fee — none of which will go to salaries. […]

Pass/fail test

By Stephen Tsai on July 14, 2010

If there’s one thing students find more inconvenient than a fee implementation is protesting one. Leaders of UH-Manoa student groups promise to protest when the Board of Regents meet tomorrow to discuss the activity fee, most of which will go to the athletic department. But what sort of turnout will there be from a student body of which 1,200 voted for  its ASUH president? If, say, there are 1,000 protesters in the air-conditioned Stan Sheriff Center, that would send a […]

Shawn Ching will join K5 football telecasts

By Stephen Tsai on July 13, 2010

Shawn Ching said he has accepted color analyst’s job for KFVE’s telecasts of Warrior football games. Ching’s hiring was the topic during yesterday’s meeting involving Oceanic and K5. Another meeting is scheduled for today. Oceanic and K5 produce UH sportscasts. Ching will work alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Leahey. Russell Yamanoha, who has been the color analyst the past three seasons, will become the on-field analyst. Ching, a former UH football player, was a popular news anchor for KITV for several […]
