Avis has selected … Homey.

Homey wins the poster. Text me at 256-0223 and we’ll figure out delivery.

There is a game within a game during 11-on-11 drills. If the offense makes a first down, all of the defensive players have to do 10 push-ups. If the defense forces a turnover or prevents a first down, every offensive player does 10 push-ups.

But no matter which side wins (or loses), Tommy Heffernan will do 10 push-ups. No wonder players have embraced Heffernan as  the football team’s strength and conditioning coach.

In a money-saving effort, the athletic department moved Chacha Kinilau from the marketing department to the administrative assistant to the associate AD’s job. The position was vacated when Erika Buder-Nakasone resigned to accept a job at Punahou School.

UH still has not hired a replacement for conditioning coach  Mel deLaura, who resigned to accept a job at Southern Methodist University. Heffernan is the only full-time employee in the UH weight room.

    From late last night:

Click http://blog.volcanicash.net/ to read David Shapiro’s newest post in his blog, “Volcanic Ash.”

What do you think the response of other students sitting around the group of protesting students will be ? What will be the response of people like Kazz and others who are passionate athletics supporters on this blog as these ticklebums cheer for the opposing team in a tight game or match at The Stan this coming season?

How much support will there be amongst students not attending? Amongst fans in general? The broader community who barely know who the head coach of Washine volleyball is?

I wanna be a poster fan for Rainbow Wahine softball.

If I win it, I’ll give it to Kazz

  30. Stephen Tsai July 19, 2010 8:54 am

Kazz has a lot of friends.

  31. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 8:56 am

  33. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 9:03 am

Boy, JJ sure robbed the UHAD when he moved to SMU. Too bad no replacement yet for Mel.

Saw Dennis McKnight on L&L show last week. He is so dynamic and engaging I wonder why he is not head coach somewhere.

  35. tommui July 19, 2010 9:10 am

    GOOD MORNING ALL!

Repeat of the last post in yesterday’s blog:

    KAZZ/AL:

My wife and I have a basic cell phone – phone, camera (how do you d/l it?) on Sprint for years.

My son-in-law and daughter are also on my bill.

Think changing the plan would be too much of a hassle since they are on the plan with me.

Would just like to have a phone, camera (just in case), GPS – though I have a TomTom portable.

    What do you recommend phone-wise?

AL: You going to the lunch at the Stadium Mall?

  36. Kazz July 19, 2010 9:11 am

    RE: UHAD positions

There is an opening posted for another compliance officer or at least someone to work in some kind of assistant capacity under Amanda Paterson.

    Posting ends this month.

  37. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 9:12 am

    Tom,

I hope I can make it to tomorrow’s lunch. We’ll see.

    Kazz,

    bwahahahaha…. You’ve been pegged.

  43. Pride. July 19, 2010 9:21 am

Eh no brag Homey, just becaue you can do 11 pushups, without stopping.

  44. roysan16 July 19, 2010 9:22 am

hmm. hoping a lurker wins the poster and keeps it

you gotta remember kazz is the one that says unflattering things about the other teams players during the game.

sure he’s done some good things, but he still has issues.

like i said hope a lurker wins.

  45. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 9:25 am

    Pride,

I actually saw homey do 11 push ups with one arm. Strong buggah.

  46. Kazz July 19, 2010 9:26 am

    ST,

JD said that they’d cut positions or not fill vacant ones in the athletic department as long as it doesn’t effect the student athletes.

So are they planning on filling another position in the weight room eventually?

  47. ╦╤─ homey ︻╦╤─ July 19, 2010 9:26 am

Pride – That’s 11 while doing them on my knuckles and with the feet elevated on the bed! LOL

    One day I shall reach 12… 🙁

  48. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 9:27 am

    homey,

next time I see you, let me measure your biceps, ok?

  49. ╦╤─ homey ︻╦╤─ July 19, 2010 9:30 am

gigi – Yeah, I pushed up a bottle of beer with one arm 11 times…

roysan16 – what if the lurker who wins the poster is a serial killer? Issues?

  50. Eye in the Sky July 19, 2010 9:32 am

Recently spotted playing some beach VB at Fort DeRussy one of PrepVolleyball’s 2012 top recruits. At least 6’3, hmmm

  52. d1島 July 19, 2010 9:33 am

    WDoc,

    re: #29

I hope the students who show up to do their protest at the games do so in an alcohol-free zone….otherwise, the counter-protests could be quite “dynamic”. 👿

  53. ╦╤─ homey ︻╦╤─ July 19, 2010 9:33 am

EitS – Any more hints on who you spotted?

  54. Kazz July 19, 2010 9:34 am

I don’t have “Issues” in my possession. That wasn’t one of the better “KoRn” albums.

  55. midori7 July 19, 2010 9:35 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

That’s a lot of push-ups. Reminds me of Major League when Wesley Snipes had to do push-ups every time he hit a pop-up in batting practice.

I wanna be a poster fan for the Rainbow Wahine softball.

  56. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 9:35 am

hmmm. which is most difficult — pushups or sit ups or chin ups?

i would think chin ups would be most difficult.

  57. jojo ® July 19, 2010 9:37 am

Loa is a mysterious individual that few have met. Loa lurks at regular intervals. Homey claims to have met Loa. I have not met Loa so I give some “HI”

If the students plan some sort of protest it probably will be minimal and consisting of ASUH members or their personal friends.

That’s just my personal opinion. Again, I’m 27 and not far removed from what people my age or in this case, somewhat younger are really thinking compared to what they will actually do.

I do NOT see UH students cheering for opposing opponents at home games. The only people I see doing that are people of the general population who have placed monetary bets on the game. 🙄

  77. madeinhawaii July 19, 2010 10:06 am

Aww shoots let the kids come with their banners and protest at the games… just as long as what they bring conforms to the stadium rules. It’ll keep the FBI busy logging more stuff into each and every one of their portfolios.

  78. (Jesse) James July 19, 2010 10:07 am

It’s raining in Mo’ili’ili now… probably a good thing practice is this afternoon. I know Kevin Spain is appreciating not being in Phoenix 110 degree temps. His Dad might be here for the USC game, so I’ll extend an invitation to the T-Gate.

  83. Kazz July 19, 2010 10:19 am

There are only TWO positions in athletics posted. One is for the compliance position and the other for Warrior Volleyball assistant coach.

I saw it on “Work At UH”.

What about asking Chris Naeole if he’d like to be the assistant to Mr. Heffernan in the weight room? I know he does not really need a job per se, but if he’s interested in Hawaii he may be a good addition, particularly for our o-line folks with regard to what’s important in strength, flexibility and power.

Actually I think that Naeole should the coach, or a volunteer coach with the Warriors. I realize that he is already coaching at Iolani, so I’m just wishing right now. I think that guys like Naeole and Jesse Sapolu have quite a lot to offer to our young men.

Would like to see Bern Brostek be an assistant to Tommy Heffernan. Bern already has trained two students who have made it into the NFL. Daniel Te’o-Nesheim with the Eagles and Max Unger with the Seahawks.

  109. A-House July 19, 2010 1:00 pm

If Darryl McBride’s JC has him coming to UH, why the “hush hush” from ST and UH?

He no qualify? No admission to UH? (just like the 2 SMU recruits?) sounds like the Texas JC recruit who was a NCAA qulaifyer, but did not do the “essay” which is required by UH. If NONE of the other academic institutions require this, why UH?

Speaking of academics, what would the PAC 10 conference look at, UH for example, to determine if it was “academically” acceptable to the conference? Advance degrees? Doctors of ??? degrees? Faculty with national or international acclaim? Grant $$$?

Why is Baylor not acceptable to PAC 10, academically?

  110. A-House July 19, 2010 1:01 pm

I hear tell that its tougher to gain entrance to UH than some PAC 10 schools. Does this count?

  111. Kazz July 19, 2010 1:11 pm

    A-House,

Probably depends on what degree a person is going after.

I used to work with a guy that went to Oregon State for his bachelors in business after he couldn’t gain admittance to UH Manoa.

    WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!

Gonna see “Inception” this evening. I’m a mark for Christopher Nolan movies and after he SAVED the Batman franchise from looking like a joke in years past, I hear some reviews that “Inception” is looking like his “epic masterpiece” to date.

  129. Shoko July 19, 2010 1:46 pm

I was perusing some Hawaii News Now stories and there were two that caught my attention. Mind you, this is NOT sports related. So read at your own risk.

Lingerie Lunchwagon in Kalihi. Ever been? I recall a similar story in Washington state that involved baristas clad in scanty bikinis in very cold conditions. The real scandal was that the workers were offering bump-and-grind lap dance in the customer’s cars for an extra BIG tip (pun intended). Do you guys think that the Kalihi lunchwagon is offensive? Okay, here’s the sport related part, maybe they should setup at the Aloha Stadium for UH football games.

Second story involved “Cheap Eats”, specifically Lyle and Russel. Didn’t those guys go on a diet earlier this year? They sure don’t look like they lost any weight. In fact, Lyle looks like he gained some weight. Okay, I’m done….

  170. tommui July 19, 2010 3:45 pm

In LUX PAINTER’s suggestion of an increase in the GET, as my accountant tells me – and he disclaims too much knowledge in this – the hotel room tax is collected by the State and turned over to the Counties. The .5% in the GET is earmarked specifically to the rail project – he didn’t know whether the C&C or Transportation people get that amount.

So the legislature can always specially earmark the additional revenues from the .5% increase for the UH.

So why can’t the legislature in its infinite wisdom, increase the GET by .5% and earmark it to the UH? If the UH handles its own contracts, what the UH does with the (hopefully) additional funds is its problem.

Yes – the legislators want to be re-elected. Yes the Christian right-wingers will scream about lottery. But the need is there and we need the $$$

Let’s get away from people who say no – I say why not?

  172. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 3:50 pm

    Tom,

I am a small business owner and don’t earn that much income from it. An additional .5% would be burdensome.

I am not sure whether a lottery is the way to go, though. But, I can imagine the excitement that would generate.

    MichiganWarrior:

    You’ve got mail!!!

  175. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 19, 2010 4:20 pm

    Tom:

The Transient Accommodations Tax is collected by the State Department of Taxation. A portion of it is distributed to the four counties based upon population and the balance goes into several different state funds – some to the General Fund, some to DLNR and DBEDT – and lots to the Hawai`i Tourism Authority which administratively is tucked under DBEDT.

The .5% GET transit tax is assessed only for goods and services here on O`ahu. It is administered by the City & County of Honolulu. I’m not sure where the adinistration is located in the City’s organizational chart, but I suspect that there’s a special office located in the Managing Director’s office with strong input from the City’s Department of Transportation Services. The State Department of Transportation has no say in how the money is spent.

With respect to adding an additional .5% earmarked for the University, where would it go? Capital or Operating Budget? Don’t forget we’re talking about at keast $150 MILLION a year even in these hard times. Also, don’t foget that about 35% of the GET is paid for by visitors.

I’m still waiting for the documents promised by Virginia Hinshaw about external grants and funding sources exclusive of alumni donations. These sums total well over $350 million a year which isn’t bad at all. However, a fairly significant amount of that money goes to research projects not directly located at Manoa – e.g., astronomy at Mauna Kea. Still, a lot is still there.

  176. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 19, 2010 4:27 pm

    Tom:

As I pointed out a day or two ago, the anti-gambling people are a lot more than just the Religious Right folks. Many progressive groups and social justice activitists as well as civic organizations such as The League of Women Voters are adamantly opposed to legalized gambling of any kind here in Hawai`i because they believe it will have a horrendous impact on the poor.

I can’t think of another subject that brings The Left and The Right together tofight legalized gambling.

Someone else stated that he was sure that legal gambling interests in Las Vegas would be opposed as well. Actually, that’s not the case. In fact, they’ve got a very skilled lobbyist working on their behalf. Why? Because they see themselves as the experts getting the startup contracts and running the casinos. They also see a whole new Asian market worth developing here in Hawai`i.

  177. madeinhawaii July 19, 2010 4:34 pm

What guarantees would you have that any money funneled in from GET would get into the Athletic Department without being watered down by the State Department of Taxation (Admin fees) and UH Admnitrative Offices (more Admin fees). Why 1/2 percent.. why not 1/4 or 1/8 percent?

  178. tommui July 19, 2010 4:35 pm

CAPITOL: re 178 Don’t know if it will be an up-hill battle but we should try – are there any other choices besides a tax increase?

I guess we could forget about the lottery and forget about the increase by saying a couple of “Our Fathers” and some “Hail, Mary”.

But we got to do something.

  179. tommui July 19, 2010 4:39 pm

Just looked at the calendar and see I have lunch with a UHF person tomorrow.

Sorry can’t make the Stadium Mall cattle call tomorrow.

MADEINHAWAII: re:179 – don’t care what percentage it would be as long as there is money going to UH. As far as the cut going to the Tax Office or even UH Administration is concern, a cut of zero is zero. At least money even with administrative costs is concern is money.

  180. madeinhawaii July 19, 2010 4:46 pm

    tommui,

I don’t mind donating that way to UH.. I just don’t like paying more for the STATE Tax Office to administer my money when they nickel and dime me for credit card fees, online echeck payment fees.. etc on top of my 0.5 percent. I paid my GET online today. On top of the 0.5% tax there is a $1.00 echeck handling fee if I pay online and as of this year they now impose an additional 1.25% handling fee on the tax due. A tax on the tax!!!

  181. tommui July 19, 2010 4:50 pm

    GIGI re:174

Assume you generate $50,000 from your business. Your GET at 4.5% would be $2,250 a year.

An increase of .5% would mean an additional $250 a year.

Most people would pass the GET to the consumer at .048%

If there is no increase in moneys generated by the State – lottery or otherwise – nothing will be done.

Can’t complain about the UH facilities etc going downhill unless we do something about it.

  182. madeinhawaii July 19, 2010 4:50 pm

But it doesn’t make sense to only tax the wholesalers when it’s the service industry that probably benefits the most from UH athletics.

why don’t you use USPS? I mailed my GET today, should get there tomorrow. No extra fees.

And even if you are late, they probably won’t penalize you. My friend, who is in the same line of business as I am, has not been penalized for her late filing.

  186. whitey July 19, 2010 4:54 pm

tommui, that has been the major problem with hawaii politics. always talking about the poor and how they will suffer. be funny if we no had tax money to pay for their privileges and see how fast they go to work. what’s wrong with lottery??? absolutely nothing!!! you notice that whenever anybody wins the powerball, the news media always puts it on front page. WHY???? we no more gambling, so why is it important???? Why, because people have a chance to make millions with a small $2 investment. What’s wrong with that????

  187. whitey July 19, 2010 4:56 pm

we put many things on the ballot, to be gay or not, etc. So why don’t we let the people decide if we shold have a lottery. If it is on the ballot, I am willing to put “fuud” on it.

  188. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 4:58 pm

    Tom,

I guess most savvy biz owners would pass the taxes on to the consumer. I can’t do that without turning my customers away. The extra tax for education could break the camel’s back.

What social effects would the lottery cause? I have read many pros and cons about it. If we tried it, would we be able to rescind it if it led to social ills? I doubt it.

  189. gigi-hawaii July 19, 2010 5:03 pm

    whitey,

maybe you are right. maybe we should put the lottery on the ballot. Let’s see how it goes!

  191. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 19, 2010 5:19 pm

If you object to the General Excise Tax concept which taxes all goods & services, then you need to speak up to the people who represent you at the Legislature. A sales tax would only hit the end buyer and not the manufacturer, wholesaler, etc. However, to make up the loss in revenues, that tax would have to be at least 10& on that cup of coffee from Starbucks or the plate lunch from L & L.

The reason for the additional fees is to help eliminate the budget deficit since regular tax revenues (income and GET) fell well over 10% over the past couple of years from the glory days in the mid-2000s. Unless people are willing to cut OPERATING COSTS – that is, salaries for prison guards and school teachers and social works and maintenance works and nurses aides at the State Hospital and secretaries and clerks in various stage agencies OR entire PROGRAMS such as public libraries or eldercare programs – there is no choice except to bump up fees or raise taxes – and the latter is not going to happen in an election year.

I attend between 75 and 90 community meetings a MONTH independent of public meetings, hearings & briefing as well as many professional trainings as possible. My day starts at 3 am when I get up, make coffee and sit down for teleconferences and meetings in Washington, DC.

Every community meeting I attend, especially during an election year, there are always a few people yelling at elected officials to stop taxing them to death while another, much larger, group is asking for more services. More than once, I’ve heard candidates say, “Folks, I cannot do all of these aat the same time – increase services and cut costs and reduce taxes. You folks have to decide which is the most important and then get back to me so that I can get it done for you.”

You can imagine how often that happens.

    Back to work – cul8z.

  192. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 19, 2010 5:24 pm

    Whitey:

The State of Hawai`i only allows Constitutional Amendments on the ballot. Hawai`i as a state does not have initiative or referendum although the City does have the latter.

To get a Constitutional Amendment on the ballot requires an enormous amount of work – and a super majority vote in both the State House and the State Senate.

Contact the person who represents you in the State House and the State Senate to discuss getting a Constitutional Amendment on the ballot.

Running a government is not as simple as some folks around here would like it to be.

Remember that ballot measure a few years ago to call a Constitutional Convention. It was blown out of the water primarily by people who were afraid that too much change – abolishing public unions, doing away with reproductive rights for women, gambling, etc – would come from the Convention.

Yes, I voted YES to hold a Constitutional Convention. Only the Legislature can put the issue on the ballot, but the public voted it down.

As a wholesaler, I simply pass that tax on.. the retailer then doubles, triples, quadruples or even more than that for his/her markup and then adds the State Excise tax to all of that. Increasing the GET is the costlier tax to the end consumer.

    IPHONE AND VERIZON RUMORS…

    Ok ok ok….

So I’ve done some talking, mostly to my brother, the techie of the family and he says what I’ve been thinking all along.

The iPhone to VZW at this time is NOTHING but rumors. Unless there is an actual software leak from Asia, which usually preceeds OFFICIAL announcements 4-5 months in advance, it’s nothing but good stories to tell and nice space fillers for online technology articles.

    ALSO,

Adobe Flash vs HTML 5…… No compairison. HTML 5 is the GOLD standard, BUT and I stress this, the REALITY is that we are at least…. at LEAST 10 years away from realizing broad usage of HTML 5. So this is no arguement. iPhone LOSES out on the next decade.

But getting back to the iPhone on VZW. The fact of the matter is this, Apple DOESN’T CARE ABOUT PRODUCT QUALITY. For all the college degrees and whatnot, Apple is failing to see that by bringing their product over to a carrier like VZW, which is the largest carrier in the nation, they will be in turn effecting the overall quality of their product. This is why:

By brother warns me that VZW is built on it’s reputation as the most reliable cellular network. My brother is an impartial speaker on this issue as he currently has Sprint, but was previously on AT&T and VZW. He went over to Sprint because while the price was the same for most plans, there are more unlimited features (like unlimited calls, text, etc…) with Sprint. Now, with a sudden influx of at LEAST 10% customer volume being added to VZW’s massive network, the reliability, data connection speeds, etc. will be effected NEGATIVELY.

For those that went to AT&T and started out on the iPhone, they cannot tell the difference from AT&T past 3G coverage to what it is now with the influx of customers because of the iPhone’s mainstream popularity. AT&T’s 3G coverage has suffered with the increase in clients.

For VZW, or ANY network to ensure the integrity of their overall coverage and data speeds, it would take a gradual process over years to catch up with the potential clients Verizon may pick up IF, IF they pick up the iPhone.

If anything, this will be more damaging to VZW as other phones on the network will be effected. Drop calls, slow downloads, name it, the problem will be shared.

Now for the iPhone and Apple, they don’t care, even though their iPhone is on VZW (hypothetical in this case). They are out to make money.

This is the BIGGEST issue I have with Apple. What most people fail to realize is that the iPhone is indeed the best phone on the market, inside and out, it is better than the rest, BUT Apple has created such a marketing monster in the iPhone that the phone just cannot and will not be able to truly function as it is supposed to be while on AT&T, which is already not as reliable as VZW, or on VZW which appears like they cannot handle the new iPhone customers at this time within their current constraints.

Apple doesn’t care and their customers can’t tell the difference…

People with HTC phones or the new family of Motorola Droids will be able to though.

In short, for BOTH parties concerned, the iPhone going to VZW would be bad. For Verizon customers their once-reliable network may go through a phase of issues other carries normally experience. The massive increase in customers on top of the customers VZW already has is a numbers game that ANY carrier would lose out on.

For iPhone customers, probably not so bad, coming from AT&T they probably won’t notice the issues they probably have been used to dealing with in the past anyway.

Again, the iPhone going to VZW is NOTHING BUT SPECULATION. If there were an announcement to be made, we may see something in the summer of 2011, but realistically, nothing would even take shape until 2012.

  215. whitey July 19, 2010 6:48 pm

doc, that’s why most think hi is a bad place to do business because it has so many laws that even the departments cannot decipher them. look at uh which has a law school, but cannot produce lawyers to protect them or look after their best interest. i think tommui had the right idea, close the law school and subsidize the accepted students at different law schools. just look at coach dana’s problems with her contract, besides have an attorney she is smart enough to have input from a genius who makes sure she is protected. uh could very well use this genius to help them with their athletic budget problems, but no they keep using flunkies.

  216. Kazz July 19, 2010 6:53 pm

    Duffer,

That’s exactly what I was talking about.

It’s not the phone’s components, totally, well… combine a not-so reliable network like AT&T and a few obvious flaws that Apple should have avoided, the iPhone itself is not the problem.

Again, it’s all in the network.

In the end of that article, they spell it out for all of us to see. Like I mentioned above, the most likely scenario is that if the iPhone comes to Verizon, there will be similar issues because of the OVERLOAD of customers under one carrier.

AT&T was never as strong as VZW, but was FURTHER impacted negatively with the SHARP increase in customers. For Verizon, it’s a better network, but again, it’s a numbers game.

If the iPhone goes to VZW, it will be a test of VZW’s ability to prepare their technology to have as little impact on their coverage and data speeds.

If I were a major shareholder of Verizon, I’d worry about maintaining the integrity of what really is the nation’s most reliable network over having a product, who’s mainstream popularity carries the risk of crippling the network over a period of time reducing it to all the others.

    Kazz #190 –

I think the rise of the Droids is good for us consumers. Hopefully, Windows Phone 7 will also be a success. Choices and competition will only make the companies more responsive to all of us.

I have the iPhone, but I realize it is not the phone or service (AT&T) for everyone. It’s no question that smartphones make life easier. Can’t do without my phone. I almost exclusively browse Warrior Beat via my phone.

  222. oldie July 19, 2010 7:09 pm

    Sorry #209 not #190.

  223. Kazz July 19, 2010 7:16 pm

    Oldie,

The more variety, the better for the consumer, I agree.

However, again, my concern is companies like Apple and even VZW in this case aren’t seeing the big picture.

In the beginning, it seemed like Apple had a vision for a great product, then when the demand became HUGE, greed took over and essentially the customers added to the problem. All phone makers now can get away with BIG flaws and the people are ok with it and will deal with it and just scoff it off.

I mean, if I paid for a phone for a certain price, I don’t want dropped calls because of the way I hold it (iPhone 4) OR if I paid for a phone I don’t want half the screen turning off (initial issues with the Droid X).

Nowadays we, the consumer accept the fact that a product WILL BE FAULTY for the first few months and then it will get better. That in itself is flawed.

But for me, I am a hypocrite in this sense. As like all of us, I’d shoot myself without my phone.

  224. Kazz July 19, 2010 7:18 pm

  231. OldDiver July 19, 2010 8:01 pm

Kazz, Sorry but I have to disagree with you that apple doesn’t care about product quality. Every survey has apple on top when it comes to customer satisfaction with the iPhone. You are confusing iPhone quality with cell service. Apple did approach verizon but was turned down because Apple wanted to control the apps via iTunes. AT&T was apple’s only taker. It has been widely reported apple and ATT signed a five year exclusive contract which expires sometime in 2012. Bashing apple now for signing a contract four years ago when it had no choice is unfair. While I do own apple shares I look forward to the cell phone competion because it can only be a good thing for consumers.

    Slugger on 118,

Thanks for the link to the Compliance page. Some of the rules boosters are NOT allowed to do border on the ridiculous. How about the one where student-athletes, relatives or guardians aren’t allowed to make phone call on your phone. I can see some aunt saying: Can I borrow your cell=phone, I forgot mine at home. You have to reply: I’m sorry aunty, but that would be a violation of booster rules? If we had a very rich benefactor step-up and say I’ll pay for the football team’s charter flights, that wouldn’t be allowed I take it. Tell me something: does anyone in their right mind really think these violations don’t go on on a daily basis in Alabama and Texas? Is it that their boosters are that much more clever than anyone else? Do they have people working in their Compliance Office lying their butts off covering up transgressions? What’s the deal?

  240. Old School Dave July 19, 2010 9:24 pm

Hats off to Tommy Heffernan and the work he’s done overseeing the football team’s strength and conditioning program. He does need an a full-time assistant to help run the entire S&C program. UH Athletic department is going to have to get with the times and get creative in hiring an assistant and paying a competitive salary to their strength staff. Gone are the days when you could simply hire someone on a part-time basis who “used to lift” and who only served as a spotter in the weight room. S&C coaches have become such an integral part of the success or failure of a program.

#239 Slugger: Got your compliance information sir and to bad during this time of Hawaii athletics that advising potential STUD athletes from LA to Hawaii is a BIG FAT NO NO !

Seems to me the “skill” positions that you need in football are here in my back yard but I am not mad or dissapointed as I gather over the years Hawaii has had “superior” athletes and many have come through former athletes reccomending their talents to the 50th state.

I understand and respect kind sir BUT there is a STUD linebacker at South West JC who is 6’4″ and 235 pounds of quick strong beef who runs and tackles like those linebackers of Georgia that we saw in the Sugarbowl as his little brother Darius attends my day camp and wears his football picture on his t shirt everyday !

JC stud has got to get his grades as not focusing on them playing for Inglewood is why he is not at Division 1 on scholarship.

Have a pleasant morning as I am off to run my inner city summer program !

Protecter: Mahalo for the clarification as I swear the name slugger I thought would be masculinity instead of femininity as I do apologize for once again getting the wrong gender behind these “tricky” blog names.

I have read the whole compliance information and MAN you can’t do NOTHING to help you good folks coming from a former athlete as it sure was not that way when I got recruited or players during my time and after. MANY former athletes reccomended Hawaii and there were PLENTY of local Hawaii boosters offering their home, food and personal money to aid student and star athletes !

WOW time has change BUT the BIG time schools still today have their players make an appearance or phone call to seal the deal as I know for a fact that USC and UCLA former players and BIG time alumni actively recruit for their schools and have off field functions of invitationd for their services with family invite.

Kids are in my office as BALL is all they want as I got to GO !

    Pat Hill takes pay cut
Ending months of speculation, Fresno State coach Pat Hill said yesterday he has agreed to a pay cut and a new contract that will extend his tenure through the 2013 season.

Hill, entering his 14th season at Fresno State, declined to give financial details of the deal, which has yet to be signed. But Hill said he agreed to the pay cut to help the athletic department and the community.

“It’s not about the money,” Hill said. “This is home. I believe in this community. I get a lot of satisfaction seeing these kids succeed on the field, with their families and in their careers.”

Fresno State announced Dec. 13 that Hill—who makes approximately $1 million per year—had agreed in principle to extend his tenure and that “discussions will begin shortly after the holidays.” His current deal runs through Dec. 31.

Hill said Monday he took a pay cut in his base salary and that the incentives in the contract have been altered to make them more difficult to reach.

“I’m really trying to be a team player. … One of the ways I can help is by taking a pay cut,” Hill said. “I wanted a chance to get this done here. I have a great group of kids and they deserve it.”
