Shawn Ching will join K5 football telecasts

Shawn Ching said he has accepted color analyst’s job for KFVE’s telecasts of Warrior football games.

Ching’s hiring was the topic during yesterday’s meeting involving Oceanic and K5. Another meeting is scheduled for today. Oceanic and K5 produce UH sportscasts.

Ching will work alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Leahey. Russell Yamanoha, who has been the color analyst the past three seasons, will become the on-field analyst.

Ching, a former UH football player, was a popular news anchor for KITV for several years before resigning in 2008 to pursue a law career. He was a football analysts for UH radio broadcasts in 1992 and telecasts in 1993 and 1994.

  28. Garret July 13, 2010 8:45 am

Fresno State was rated the #52 team in D-IA football with this in-depth look at their team. This tidbit was impressive:

Tidbit (special teams edition) The Pat Hill-led Bulldogs have excelled on special teams, both in blocking kicks and in the return game. In fact, Fresno State leads the nation in blocked kicks since 2002 with 49, ahead of Texas (45), Louisiana-Lafayette (40) and Florida (38). Since 1997, when Hill first took over, Fresno has scored 39 touchdowns on special teams: 20 on punt returns, eight on kickoff returns and 11 via blocked kicks.

Who would have guessed that Louisiana-Lafayette would be the #3 team in the country for blocked kicks?

  29. Garret July 13, 2010 8:48 am

The next stage of conference realignment reviews will start next week when schools start to launch their own TV networks. If this proves profitable, then the overall conference TV network may be less attractive to the big-budget schools and maybe realignment to get big conference TV contracts will die down.

I would *love* for UH to someday have its own TV network that would be on basic cable in Hawaii and an option to purchase for mainland people.

The University of Texas could launch its own TV channel in the summer of 2011.

The Universities of Oklahoma and Missouri might not be far behind.

The Dallas Morning News estimated that a Texas network could command eight to 10 cents per TV subscriber.

Using the bottom figure (eight cents) and assuming the network became available at every home in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, the school would make almost $1.2 million a year.

That figure doesn’t include subscriber fees from homes outside of those cities. It also doesn’t include money from sponsorships (Think: The Bob Stoops Show, presented by Nike) or commercials. Castiglione said the school has already evaluated some of those options with its longtime corporate sponsors.

Considering a few thousand dollars can cover a basic game broadcast, the network will be able to turn a profit, Castiglione said, or the school wouldn’t be pursuing it.

Mahalo to ESPN on taking care of Coolen da Gang at the ESPY’s. First class treatment!

From Coach Collen blog on the UH website:

“ESPN has been in contact with my wife, making all of the arrangements and sparing no expense. They also invited Kelly Majam (and a guest, which is her sister, Allison) and Jenna Rodriguez (guest, her father, Larry). We are going to be living the “high life” for the next two days. ESPN is flying us first class, sending a driver to the airport to pick us up, and providing two nights at the W Hollywood. Apparently, there will be a police escorted limo to the ESPY’s on Wednesday. (My wife is most excited about the free hair styling and make up provided). Kelly and Jenna, who are both currently on the mainland, are also being picked up by drivers at their homes in California, and are both very excited. There are a total of four events scheduled (my wife bought a dress for each occasion) for the next two days beginning with VIP check in when we arrive to pick up our itinerary and “event tickets.” The girls have been busy shopping and getting ready for the big event as well.”

  37. haka July 13, 2010 9:07 am

    Coolen 🙂

  38. papajoe2 July 13, 2010 9:07 am

#30 Garrret, That’s what I was talking about. I think you mentioned that it would costs &20-30 million to start. Since Oceanic already has HDTV cameras, I think the start up costs would be less than that. Other smaller UH sports could also be included on the channel. We could use UH’s broadcast journalism students like apprentices for on the job training and even camera men, directors, producers, etc.. I know that with union contract, Oceanic would run into problems, but they could work it out in the telecast contract, making it a way for the TV production crew at UH (if they have one) using it like a class with credit counting for a degree.Commercials, like they use for PPV UH football (even though we are paying to watch) will cover some of the expenses.

  39. d1島 July 13, 2010 9:09 am

  43. Shoko July 13, 2010 9:22 am

Every University of Southern Califonia football player must meet with school compliance officials by the end of next week, in what looks to be the school’s latest effort to curtail possible NCAA-outlawed activities for its student-athletes.

A notice posted in multiple locations around USC athletics headquarters Heritage Hall reminds players to bring current copies of their housing lease, car-related data and summer and academic year employment information to the meetings.

Almost sounds like an IRS audit. 😉

  44. Kazz July 13, 2010 9:23 am

I saw that post by Coach Coolen last night and I’m still wondering what the heck is “California Chic”?

I say Coach Coolen, J-Rod, and Majam should have just walked up in there dressed the way they did at the WAC awards banquet with their UA warm up gear on looking like they were going to play a game in two hours. 😆

Arkansas State has received an official notice of inquiry from the NCAA concerning potential violations.

The school self-imposed a $43,500 fine last year after admitting “inadvertent mistakes” that led to improperly certified credits for athletes who transferred in.

The university said in a statement Monday it had received the formal inquiry concerning “potential violations involving ineligible competition of student-athletes due to failure to meet percentage of degree requirements and a potential academic fraud violation.”

The school says it will continue to assist with the inquiry and will not discuss the investigation publicly.

A little tidbit from the Sun Belt Conference.

Why do I always seem to bring to light the negative aspect of college sports? I should be a crime reporter. Okay, I’m done with the negative reporting. Carry on…

  50. papajoe2 July 13, 2010 9:36 am

Off Topic: Aloha and mahalo to Mau Pialug (sp?) for all that you did for the Hawaiian and Polynesian communities. One of my dearest friends was the late Dukie Kuahulu (master weaver, hahaha)who traveled to Tahiti on the Hokule’a on the very first voyage. Many of the original crewmen on that historical voyage has since passed on. All of them are heroes (although may be forgotten) within the Hawaiian community. I wish we could see the National Geographic version of the original voyage again as a tribute to Mau and the forgotten Hawaiian heroes. WARNING: some people dispute the NG’s version of what really happened on the voyage, but to see all those Hawaiians making history, or even repeating ancient history, for Polynesia would be very motivational for our keiki and mo’opuna.

  75. papajoe2 July 13, 2010 10:32 am

Paka, yea, the trip would be much too long. You could go down the Rio Grand into oil infested waters. Pay a couple of hundred thousand dollars to pass through the Panama Canal (or go around), avoiding crocodiles and snakes, then find your way to paradise. You might make it back in time for the 2012 season, but the conferences might all be different by then…. Have a good trip home.

  78. MichiganWarrior July 13, 2010 10:34 am

#50… I’m sure they’ll have lots of reruns of various sports events. Along with that, they can advertise the various disciplines that are offered within the entire UH system. Then there’s stuff that can be made up along the way, like weekly student talent shows, or zooming in on one or two academic stars per week, and what they do in class and in their free time. I’m sure we could come up with more than enough fresh content, to go along with limited reruns after prime time.

  79. Ralph July 13, 2010 10:37 am

Congratulations to Coolen and the Na Wahine Softball team. Enjoy the Espy’s. Lucky for Nancy Coolen that Bob got a nice bonus for his WAC title, Tournament Title and making it to the world series, she can “shop until she drop” for wardrobe, and shop some more in NY.

  80. d1島 July 13, 2010 10:46 am

    Paka,

    Enjoy the visit; safe travels.

  81. Ralph July 13, 2010 10:50 am

Winning helps UH in publicity, we see it in Na Wahine softball invitation to the ESPY and the fanfare tossed upon them by ESPN, athletics brings the University a lot of local and national exposure, it increase students applications and donations, and it generates a lot of pride within the community and alumni. UH needs to sustain its athletic program and if it means a student athletic fee to survive, then so be it. We pay for a lot of services in life that we don’t use or agree with, but they were initiated for the community as a whole.

So winning in fb and mbb is tantamount to UH survival in D1 athletics, they need to win big and generate a lot more money then past seasons and they need to progress to the next level of play such as annual bowl games in fb and NCAA regional play in mbb

  82. Ralph July 13, 2010 11:02 am

  86. NYUH July 13, 2010 11:32 am

Maybe what is needed is a Hawai’i channel. IPTV Hawaii was a good idea but first movers don’t always pan out and the technology was a bit premature. You need a HDTV solution that is web-based.

  87. Slugger July 13, 2010 11:33 am

    Paka,

  89. Lux Painter July 13, 2010 11:46 am

By the royal treatment given to Coach Coolen and the Wahine SBB, I assume we won the upset of the year award?

  90. chawan_cut July 13, 2010 11:55 am

not sure if the royal treatment guarantees win. ESPN likes to roll out the red carpet for this thing and likes to have all parties nominated on hand to show live in the audience while they open the envelope. crossing my fingers tho. would love for our team to win!

  91. Last Call July 13, 2010 12:08 pm

Espy results like the Academy Awards are a closely guarded secret. The vote counting is probably done by some independent accounting firm.

Everyone who is nominated gets the same royal treatment so I wouldn’t take it as a sign of anything.

  108. ai-ee-soos July 13, 2010 1:17 pm

The Rainbow Wahine softball booster club treasury is in good hands with Myki.

And, a happy one to you !!!

  109. Kazz July 13, 2010 1:36 pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TO SHAUNA AND MYKI!!!

  110. MichiganWarrior July 13, 2010 1:43 pm

#107… Yeah, I was hoping their bats would wake up, and we’d have a rematch with UCLA. Still was an outstanding year for Na Wahine.

  111. Kazz July 13, 2010 1:45 pm

    Chawan,

The former all american NCAA wrestler turned WWE Champion, failed Minnesota Viking and now UFC Champ Brock Lesnar is a shining example of how Dana White KNEW he had to have a main event heavyweight star with some kind of mainstream draw to his name. Lesnar was practically handed the title and it was insane to think that the UFC heavyweight champ had a 2-1 record (at that time).

But Lesnar was crafted to be the man and White made sure of it.

Gotta give it to Dana White though, the man is taking a page out of pro-wrestling by having the UFC guys work as independent contractors so they don’t have to pay for medical or retirement.

  112. Kazz July 13, 2010 1:48 pm

On top of facing great pitching, the Wahine just got tired. A month on the road in four different timezones can do things to the human body both mentally and physically.

What this Wahine team did in their sport, surpasses ANY other UH sport in the last decade, with the exception of Warrior Volleyball winning the 2002 National Championship and Amber Kaufman winning the gold.

  113. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 1:48 pm

My Korean grandmother used to watch pro-wrestling on TV. The more violent the better for her. I could never understand the appeal. Ugh!

  114. J-FORCE July 13, 2010 1:49 pm

Warriors qb Raush + Moniz combo = Deadly treat against any opponent team!!
Warriors wr Salas + Bradley + Pilares = Bess, Rivers & Mullin !!

    GO WARRIORS!!
    BEAT trojans!!

  115. Kazz July 13, 2010 1:53 pm

No doubt Kelly Majam and J-Rod will be thinking of next season in their minds as they are given the first class treatment in LA for the ESPYs.

As a freshman, Majam got a taste of both individual and team success and the combination of youth and experience can make for a dangerous athlete.

For J-Rod, she has a national title in JUCO, she made national headlines in her first year at UH. Next season will be her last as a Rainbow Wahine and she will have a different sense of urgency than her younger teammates.

The hunger of the 2011 Rainbow Wahine softball team should be borderline cannibalistic… to other teams of course! 😈

  116. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 1:53 pm

    Kazz,

the 2002 national championship — wasn’t that rescinded because one of the players played pro volleyball before he went to UH?

  117. madeinhawaii July 13, 2010 1:54 pm

    J-FORCE…

Deadly “treat”?? … I hope you meant deadly THREAT! … lol

  118. madeinhawaii July 13, 2010 1:55 pm

Didn’t Kaufman just win Gold somewhere else, again?

  119. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 1:55 pm

    MIH,

I sent you email. Don’t know if you use the same email addy.

  120. BigIslandkurt July 13, 2010 1:57 pm

    No! NO! No!
    No platooning at QB. Please.

    BIK

  121. (Jesse) James July 13, 2010 2:00 pm

    #117…they did…but we were hosed on that one…. 🙁

  122. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 13, 2010 2:00 pm

Back to student athletic fee – see DR’s blog. Anyone else disagree?

  123. chawan_cut July 13, 2010 2:00 pm

um, can you say, NO DUH!!!!

  124. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 2:01 pm

    ST,

Nice pics of the players! Glad you got some shots even though it wasn’t the real practice time.

  125. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 2:02 pm

I am so tired of this debate over the activity fee. It’s gonna happen anyway, no matter who objects.

  126. Ipu Man July 13, 2010 2:06 pm

Oh-oh…FREE SPEECH may not not be free for long.
In the Pacific Business News (in doctor’s office so not sure the date) said the Star Advertiser will start to charge people to see their page
    including blogs…soon?

  127. chawan_cut July 13, 2010 2:06 pm

shawn ching will do well with leahey.
btw, who’s gonna help out kekaula at kitv? i haven’t been impressed with the stand ins that attempt to know sports.

  128. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 2:12 pm

Do you think Kanoa would replace Jim Leahey as sports announcer? Somehow, I thought his present job as TV anchor pays more. Also, which post has more prestige?

  129. chawan_cut July 13, 2010 2:17 pm

why the heck would CSS show old jason campbell college games? maybe he runs the station and wants to relive his (overhyped) college career.

  130. J July 13, 2010 2:19 pm

    gigi-hawaii,

Your #114 comment reminded me of a film. Have you seen Hyung Sup Lim’s short, “Grandma and Wrestling”?

    http://www.asiaarts.ucla.edu/article.asp?parentid=108449

  131. d1島 July 13, 2010 2:22 pm

    c_c,

    College career?

    Play#1- Hand-off to Ronnie Brown
    Play#2- Hand-off to Cadillac Williams

    repeat…

  132. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 2:25 pm

    J,

haha!!! No, I never saw that film. Sounds fun though!

Made me remember how my grandma would say, “AIGU” when one wrestler would lift the other wrestler and throw him down onto the mat with a thud. Ow!

  133. chopsueyboy July 13, 2010 2:39 pm

    willie

You’re right, I didn’t sleep through the nude model class in ART 101 at Varsity
however as luck would have it, we had a female with lots & lots of pounds on her.
Wished I could have slept and avoid the nightmare.

  134. chopsueyboy July 13, 2010 2:39 pm

Happy Birthday wishes to Shauna & Myki

  135. Stephen Tsai July 13, 2010 2:47 pm

    Gigi:
It’s like Manoa rain. Miss a workout? There will be another one in an hour.

  136. (Jesse) James July 13, 2010 2:47 pm

CSB…..I remember that nude model class in Art 101 at the Art Building at UHM…However, our professor wouldn’t tell the class whether the model would be male or female. I chose to sign up for the film class that day where we learned about video production stuff. Lots of people, especially guys, signed up for the nude model class. I finished early so went back to the Art Building to meet my friends who signed up for that class….unfortunately the model turned out to be a man in his mid to late 50s…..MWAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

  137. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 2:52 pm

My Art 101 class was taught by Ben Norris, and all we saw were slide pictures. No models, darn!

  138. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 2:57 pm

Tyler Hadden is left handed??? He kicks with his left leg. My husband, who is left handed, said his father always told him that left handed people have the highest number of geniuses and criminals.

  139. Old Diver July 13, 2010 3:05 pm

    gigi

Is the split about 50% between geniuses and criminals?

  140. Dallas Home Loans July 13, 2010 3:07 pm

I thought it was going to be some boring old post, but it really compensated for my time. I will post a link to this page on my blog. I am sure my visitors will find that very useful.

  141. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 3:09 pm

    Old Diver,

Dunno. My father-in-law also said that left-handed people tend to be insane. haha

  142. (Jesse) James July 13, 2010 3:24 pm

#142…gigi..left handed people are the only ones in their right minds….

  143. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 3:34 pm

    #143 James,

Only a left-handed person could have made that statement…

  144. Slugger July 13, 2010 3:47 pm

    al,

Lunch at Fook Yuen today with my Mom & Uncle Walter: Dungeness crab, lobster, bitter melon & pork, all with black bean sauce, and shrimp fried rice. Yum! We also talked about guri guri… eat some for me.

  145. chopsueyboy July 13, 2010 3:59 pm

our son is left handed writing
    but right handed everything else
    special classification?

  146. Kazz July 13, 2010 4:02 pm

    Gigi,

The University of Hawaii Warrior Volleyball team won the 2002 National Championship on the court where REAL champions are decided.

On paper, through a FLAW in the rules, they had their title declared “invalid”.

  147. (Jesse) James July 13, 2010 4:11 pm

    Kazz…#147…like I told gigi…we were hosed….

  148. (Jesse) James July 13, 2010 4:12 pm

#146…CSB..my dad was born left handed….but was hit by my great-grandmother every time he used his left hand…you know the Chinese thing about left handed people….therefore, he became ambidextrous…although he wrote better with his left hand and did other things better with his right…

  149. GRM July 13, 2010 4:16 pm

    #138 Gigi,
Norris was also my instructor in Art 101. However, that year, the class didn’t have a nude model. All we did were still life & unique buildings. Sketched the old Tahitian Lanai on Ala Moana Blvd.

  150. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 4:50 pm

    GRM,

I will have to check my college transcript. Maybe, I took a different art course. What I took was the HISTORY OF ART, I believe. We did absolutely no drawing in that class.

How were you students graded on your sketches? How could you be expected to draw as well as the teacher??? Not fair!!!

  151. Maverick July 13, 2010 4:57 pm

Shawn Ching and K-5 steps up to the plate.

Hope Shawn and Pops can mesh announcing together before the season starts.

    Geeeve ’em heck guys.

  152. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 5:03 pm

gigi-hawaii #115 post from yesterday: As I stated to you VERY CLEARLY that D. Fish will come back as a Laker and retire a Laker as his BOND with Kobe was to strong to leave !

“Let the hunt for six” begin say’s D. Fish as I KNEW he will be back as LA LOVES him and he has been CLUTCH for us since he came into the league with Kobe 11 years ago.

Three year contract that will take him to 39 years of age as he will have a celebration at Staples when he retire and POSSIBLY his uniform #2 going up to the rafters to join the likes of Baylor, Chamberlain, Magic, Jabbar, Worthy, Goodrich and West who’s Laker careers are milestone in achievement !

Take care and tell hubby “I told you so” !

  153. wafan July 13, 2010 5:08 pm

Congratulations to myki, the co-treasurer of the Wahine softball boosters!!!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  154. wafan July 13, 2010 5:12 pm

Glad they finally caught the idiotic barefoot bandit. They should have started arresting all of those fools who were helping him survive and escape in WA, too.

  155. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 5:15 pm

chopsueyboy #134: MAN that was FUNNY about the BIG nude model for Art 101 as I took the class in 76-77 at the Art building in a BIG auditorium as we sketched on assignments from prof syllabus as we had NO LUXURY from any nude models posing as MANY athletes took the class and I know from my conversations with them that their TESTOSTERONE levels would not stopped them from charging the STAGE !

  156. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 5:32 pm

    Rainbow Cliff,

    Did you draw well?

  157. al July 13, 2010 5:42 pm

slugger….sounds good to me. that maine lobster with dao see is the bomb. it was hobes malmsbury who recommend the dish.

  158. al July 13, 2010 5:45 pm

you know you are old when…

“…Baylor, Chamberlain, Magic, Jabbar, Worthy, Goodrich and West”

you have watched all of these guys play in person except the youngest one on this list.

  159. Slugger July 13, 2010 5:50 pm

Finally! The NL wins the All Star game!

Great update on Coach Coolen’s trip to the ESPYs on the UH Athletics site.

    al,

    The crab was outstanding.

  160. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 5:50 pm

    Al,

If I have to use my fingers to eat lobster or crab, I won’t eat them. I prefer to use a fork or chopsticks on already shelled seafood.

  161. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 6:04 pm

Miss Gigi #157: I can HONESTLY say I did as I was FOND of Art and had many experiences from childhood drawings with sketching trees, fruit and Disneyland characters.

Pastels and charcoal I was introduce in Art 101 as deceased quaterback Michael Stennis was an AWESOME artist who’s drawings I remember so well as we sat together in class.

I was in AWED of his many drawings as a LOT of athletes would pay Mike to sketch specific drawings for their Final exam as his business mind was in rare form at this early age that would take him later on in years to become a successive business men here in Los Angeles.

Enjoyed ALL my classes at UH and did my VERY best to pass as I attended ALL my classes !

  162. Mrs. A-House July 13, 2010 6:06 pm

    Momo:

we have 3 waxed lined boxes which appear to be just right to start a garden in.

    about 20″ wide x 10″ deep x 36″ long – very sturdy.

    can use for “hydrophonic” garden?

  163. A-House July 13, 2010 6:08 pm

last thursday nite ate fresh dungeness crabs – out of the water, into the pot, and on dinner table within 90 minutes – talk about broke da mouth good!!!

    Happy Birfday to Myki!

  164. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 6:09 pm

    Rainbow Cliff,

It really boggles my mind to know that athletes can be good artists as well.

I have absolutely no artistic ability. My younger brother was the artist in the family and got a degree in art. He became a high school art teacher.

  165. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 6:19 pm

Can anyone explain to me why is their AWESOME sea food buffets in Las Vegas which is a desert surrounded by no ocean with NOTHING close to it here in LA or any part of the mainland ?

Is there a sea food buffet in Hawaii that can match Vegas as Friday’s Sam Towne is delicious with crab legs, prawns, filet, catfish, oysters and plent of fried and raw shrimp for less then $20.00 a plate with ALL you can eat and PLENTY of other delicacies !

  166. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 6:23 pm

Miss Gigi, ALL I can say that athletes during my era were very talentd on and off the field AS I had the privelage and honor of meeting and spending QUALITY time with a LARGE majority of them.

    Mahalo for your GREATNESS !

  167. Lux Painter July 13, 2010 6:23 pm

    Mrs. AHouse re:163

You should check out the hydrophonic store in Kahala (across from the Kahala Mall next (more or less) Chan’s restaurant.

  168. MichiganWarrior July 13, 2010 6:27 pm

Speaking of geniuses and left-handedness… isn’t Coach Coolen left-handed?

  169. Hobes Malmsbury July 13, 2010 6:28 pm

    AL – re:158:

I prefer clams with dao see on rice – good stuff.

Lobster I generally leave alone because of gout and the work you have to do to get at the meat. Funny, my wife is a champ at eating lobster, legs and all.

I use to serve lobster as a waiter in my early years at Don the Beachcomber!

  170. d1島 July 13, 2010 6:30 pm

    Rainbow Cliff,

    It’s called, “legalized gambling.”

  171. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 6:32 pm

Mr and Mrs A-House as always kind folks LOVE to read your posts as HOPE you and your LOVE ones are well !

KNOW you good folks will be “ROAD Warriors” as Colorado and West Point won’t be the same after you yell and cheer for your WARRIORS all through out the stadium !

Have a cool summer and give my regards to Massa Boy and Midori 7 !

  172. tommui July 13, 2010 6:33 pm

    JessieJames:

you know the Chinese thing about left handed people

I probably no longer worry about it even with 100% pake blood as my son, granddaughter, brother-in-law, niece etc all are lefties.

  173. tommui July 13, 2010 6:36 pm

Speaking of left-handed complements, Presidents Obama, the two Bushes, Clinton were lefties – so was Herb Score, but that’s another story…

  174. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 6:37 pm

    Tom,

Bush Sr is a leftie. His son is a rightie.

  175. tommui July 13, 2010 6:38 pm

Happy birthday to Myki: Have a pepper volka to celebrate in St. Pete!

  176. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 6:39 pm

d1: WOW so gambling can bring that kind of sea food to the many casino restaurants in sin city as that is AMAZING !

question ?: Is Hawaii restaurant food better then Vegas ?

  177. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 6:40 pm

As I said, my husband is left handed and it shows in his speech. For example, he will say go up Kapahulu to get to the hotels, when he really should say go DOWN Kapahulu.

I always have to remind him: UP TO THE MOUNTAINS, DOWN TOWARD THE SEA.

  178. madeinhawaii July 13, 2010 6:42 pm

    gigi…

proof positive that you have to be at least half-crazy to run this country properly, eh?

btw… Got you email.. will let you know as soon as I discuss it with the misses… she’s at work.

  179. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 6:44 pm

    MIH, okay.

  180. Slugger July 13, 2010 6:49 pm

    Coolen is a lefty.

It’s not just the Chinese who force lefties to use their right hand. My husband’s Italian Nana used to say, “Il Malocchio”, and make him use his right. He adjusted by learning to print with his right hand and hardly ever wrote in cursive script. What people do because of superstitions…

  181. Matt July 13, 2010 6:54 pm

Looks to me like Hadden is kicking with his right leg.

  182. A-House July 13, 2010 6:54 pm

    Rainbow cliff:

Thank you for your kind words and will pass on your good wishes to Midori7 and Masaboy who I just spent 7 days having fun in Alaska.

We sure are looking forward to our trip to West Point and Boulder. Our nephew, who lives in Denver, was also with us as was his older brother.

  183. Matt July 13, 2010 7:01 pm

WRT Coach Coolen: Maybe what they say about lefties and criminals is true. Opposing pitchers thought it was criminal the way the Wahine kept blasting homers all season. 😀

  184. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 7:01 pm

Well good nite good folks got a GREAT day for my day camp program tomorrow as we take over 70 inner city children to Disneyland courtesy of their “volunteer disney day” program !

Over 80% has never been to the Magic Kingdom as we have 5 year olds all the way to 16 year old teenagers who are going for the very first time !

Disney has provided us a bus and 100 one day passes with the city of LA coming through for another bus as we are off by 7:30 am with the street of 91st and Western lined up around the building as parents and children wait ANXIOUSLY for your’s truly to open up the building and get their Disneyland groove on !

7:00 am in the morning to 10:00 at NIGHT as I will be ready for this WONDERFUL acheivement putting some adorable smiles on some BEAUTIFUL kids for their
first time experience at the Magic Kingdom !

    Pleasant Dreams !

  185. Matt July 13, 2010 7:06 pm

If Hadden were kicking with his left leg, his upper body would be facing the other direction.

  186. greenthumb July 13, 2010 7:11 pm

RainbowCliff — hope you and the kids have a magical time tomorrow; not sure whose smiles will be bigger, yours or theirs.

  187. RainbowCliff July 13, 2010 7:32 pm

MAHALO greenthumb as TRUELY I am so HAPPY to this day for them as I am only guaranteed for 10 hours of pay time as I have signed a waiver for the additional 5 hours to be of volunteer service !

Couldn’t bare the thought of them not seeing the fire work show over the Magic Castle !

    Good Night !

  188. wafan July 13, 2010 7:52 pm

At Western I took art classes. One class was particularly traumatic. The flowers, fruits, and nudes were fine. Until we had our last female nude. I was busy getting my equipment set up when she walked in, sat with her back to our side of the class, and disrobed. It was difficult not to gasp aloud.

Apparently she had never seen a razor, a bra, or soap and water for that matter. The pose she struck was . . . interesting. Arms and legs akimbo. Heck, she might as well have thrown one breast over her opposite shoulder while draping and cradling the other in her lap.

I cleaned her up — in my drawing. The prof was not pleased because, as he said, I needed to draw what was there. I felt I needed to draw what I thought was beauty; a la Picasso. I got a low A for the course because of my interpretation.

Never took another class from that prof again.

  189. tommui July 13, 2010 8:03 pm

GIGI: Bush Sr is a leftie. His son is a rightie.

Junior is? I was wondering why he was so right wing.

  190. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 8:04 pm

    Tom, hahaha!!! very good!

  191. gigi-hawaii July 13, 2010 8:06 pm

    Wafan,

At least you got an A.

I can’t draw to save my life. Have a hard time cutting mats, too.

  192. jm2375 July 13, 2010 8:17 pm

I learned quickly to stay away from classes where I knew I wouldn’t do well. Art was definitely one of those courses.

  193. jm2375 July 13, 2010 8:24 pm

OK, I’m chatting with my cousin on FB and just found out he’s a lurker. Now I”m gonna have to change my name…

  195. Slugger July 13, 2010 8:38 pm

    Matt,

You’re right. Tyler Hadden is kicking with his right foot. If you look at his shoes, you can tell that the left foot is just coming off the turf.

Wonder what Dunnachie’s doing this summer?

  203. SteveM July 13, 2010 9:54 pm

I just finished packing. I think.
Mom better not bring out more boxes of chocolate covered macadamia nuts.
Heading for Seattle tomorrow for my niece’s wedding.
Really big family on my bro-in-law side and the groom side is large also.

    Talk with mom last week:
MOM: How much is the extra bag charge on Hawaiian?
    ME: Why?
MOM: COSTCO is having a sale on chocolate macadamia nuts.
ME: Sandy (my sister) says she buys it in Seattle too. Buy it there.
    MOM: [silence]
ME: COSTCO’s main office is near Seattle…
    MOM: Doesn’t seem right…
ME: Think of this way, you’re still buying it from COSTCO, they are just shipping it for you to their WA stores, where we pick them up.

Yup…the boxes still keep coming out here… 🙁

  204. whitey July 13, 2010 9:55 pm

Col A House, how was fishing in the north country????? Going next week to POW to do some damage to the over population of fish. hahahahahaaaaa.

  206. whitey July 13, 2010 10:03 pm

dang, you guys harassing dr that now his blog is not available.

  207. whitey July 13, 2010 10:07 pm

my friend who works atop Haleakala says that on clear days you can see Oahu, so I ask him, which is more far, Forida or the moon???? Answer is Florida.

  208. whitey July 13, 2010 10:08 pm

he said the moon, but the correct answer is Florida.

  209. SteveM July 13, 2010 10:12 pm

whitey — Thanks. You too! We’ll be crossing paths. I’ll be Ketchikan next Friday on cruise ship Norwegian Pearl. Juneau on Tuesday.

Taking the cruise on Sunday. Wedding is Saturday night. Quick getaway.
Had to take a cruise since we paid for all that airfare to SEA. 🙄

  210. whitey July 13, 2010 10:22 pm

SteveM, right on. I won’t be in Ketchikan when you arrive there, but will be on POW at Klawock. You will be on of the many cruise ships which make their stops there. The town business is catering to the cruise ships and they have done a very good job in accommodating all the ships. Counted 7 on my last year’s trip. They also upgraded their airport. Your cruise should be a great one as the days are long and weather is just right. Have a good one.

  211. d1shima July 13, 2010 10:22 pm

    Bon voyage,SteveM.

Way ta go, WDoc! Hung in there with DR like a champ!

c_c, watch out. Someone else trying to move in on your claim to lame….deadline? 🙄

  212. whitey July 13, 2010 10:23 pm

why is Florida the correct answer. Because can you see Florida from here???? Absolutely not!!!!!!! hahahahahahaaaa

  213. whitey July 13, 2010 10:26 pm

d1, checked with Rogers Ishizu and he will be at one of the Linfield home games which will honor his national champion team this fall. He is in the Linfield Hall of Fame.

d1shima — you got me curious so I went over to check it out myself. wow. Is there a “mercy rule” for blogs? 😯

Wassupdoc — “Hello dingalings” was accurate and succinct, but not politically correct. I was shocked…after I finished laughing and coughing. You made a lot of sense. I second the “Way ta go!”.

  218. Slugger July 14, 2010 12:24 am

    Have a good trip, SteveM!

    WassupDoc,

Good for you! I think I’ll show up at the BoR mtg. to put my 2 cents in.

  219. Slugger July 14, 2010 12:25 am

Night! Better get to bed so I can make it to practice tomorrow.

  220. wafan July 14, 2010 12:33 am

    Darn insomnia.

  221. wafan July 14, 2010 12:35 am

    SteveM, H-Bod, Whitey, and jm#### . . .

    Have safe and great trips!

  222. wafan July 14, 2010 12:41 am

The on-line edition has “The Big Q”. Does it even work? Either the poll just closed or the results are not shown. What is up with that? Or do the folks running it have to take a break to meet some deadline?

  223. wafan July 14, 2010 12:42 am

Night crew has been missing for some time now.

Those were fun days (nights?) on the blog.

  224. koakane™ July 14, 2010 12:45 am

wafan too much time on your hands, sleep sleep sleep

  225. wafan July 14, 2010 12:46 am

Wow. $30 per month for a paper subscription. Kind of spendy.

  226. wafan July 14, 2010 12:47 am

    KK . . .

HA! Some days it feels like I could use more time.

  227. Ralph July 14, 2010 12:47 am

Wafan “fun days” for the “night crew,” too bad you were already in bed at 5 pm HST and wasn’t around in real time. 🙂

  228. wafan July 14, 2010 12:52 am

    Ralph . . .

I was up about 2am (HST) most days during the school year. As I recall, you were here quite a bit, too. HA!

I cannot take a quick nap in a darkened room during the day.

  229. koakane™ July 14, 2010 12:57 am

only a matter of time before the ralph man appears so it witching hour

  230. koakane™ July 14, 2010 1:00 am

buddy left today heading back to chicago and should be arriving in about a couple of hours. time flies when good friends visit and then have to leave. where did the 13 days go?

  231. koakane™ July 14, 2010 1:08 am

oh well my extended nap time is here but leaving this to ponder

    It’s Hell to be Old

An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, “Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow.”

The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor’s office and
gave him the jar which was as clean and empty as on the previous day.

The doctor asked what happened and the man explained, “Well, doc, it’s like this – – first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing.
She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in . . . then with her teeth out . . . still nothing.

We even called up Arleen, the lady next door, and she tried too. First with both hands, then an armpit . . .and she even tried squeezin’ it between her knees . . .but still nothing . . .”

The doctor was shocked! “You asked your neighbor?”

The old man replied, “Yep, none of us could get the jar open.”

  232. SteveM July 14, 2010 1:10 am

I gotta go sleep soon so can’t chat. Sorry. Got a plane to catch.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone!

wafan — someone told me: “If you think paying $xx for a newspaper subscription is bad, you haven’t tried wrapping your fish with your computer screen”. 😐

  233. koakane™ July 14, 2010 1:13 am

    😆

  234. chawan_cut July 14, 2010 1:14 am

  235. wafan July 14, 2010 1:15 am

    SteveM . . .

My field deals with paper. HA!

Might be newsprint, card stock, C2S/C1S stock, . . . no problem there.

Of course, might have a problem picking up the dog presents with a monitor.

  236. wafan July 14, 2010 1:18 am

    SteveM . . .

You are just going to miss the heatwave in WA. Last week they were up in the low to mid 90’s.

Still cooler than what it will probably be in another month or so — 100’s.

  237. wafan July 14, 2010 1:18 am

    Try again.

If not, looks like a lot of naps tomorrow.

You can google plenty articles on Chad – no need post ’em all here.

  239. rage777 July 14, 2010 4:47 am

Is the second picture of Scott the kick and the first picture after the ball is in the air? Or is this two different kicks? It’s at the same hash mark, so I couldn’t tell. I don’t like that he is kicking so far behind the ball with his plant foot so far in front of the ball. And his plant foot is not pointing towards the field goal. If Scott is trying to not kick it as high, then he should be having his knee more over the ball then kicking in more in the back of the ball. It’s just like golf, where you place the ball in the stance makes a big difference. Can we get Elam to come in as a student manager?

My only take on the Athletic fee….

There may have been a time when Athletics was able to pay for itself at UH but then when the big money grab that is known as Title IX became law, that all changed.
Methinks many of those groups who are now decrying the new fee were at the forefront of those lauding the opportunities that it gave for “gender equity.” The problem is that the big-time money that attracted the attention of the ERA crowd after they couldn’t get the Amendment passed never filtered thru to programs like Hawaii’s.
Well folks, you can’t have it both ways! Having equal opportunities for all students comes with a price…UH Mens’ athletics just isn’t big-time enough to pull the load for everyone!
It would be a good idea if all Na Wahine showed up at SSC tomorrow to remind ASUH and GSO where the $50 is really going.
    ’nuff said…

  244. greentea July 14, 2010 5:35 pm

GIGI… Tyler Hadden kicks right footed. That is actually Scott Enos in all 3 pictures… notice the clothes, hair, and watch on wrist. Glad to see they are working together.
