Umu gets scholie; Manu leaves team

By Stephen Tsai on August 21, 2010

In one of those good news/sad news deals, defensive end Kamalu Umu will receive a football scholarship starting Monday, the first day of UH’s fall semester.  It’s well deserved for Umu, who is married and has a 2-year-old daughter. He really worked hard to earn the starting job at right end.  The scholarship became available when defensive end Veni Manu, a 2009 signee who recently became eligible, quit the team. Best wishes to Manu. * * * * *  We’ve […]

Quo vadimus

By Stephen Tsai on August 20, 2010

Jerry Maguire: How do I spin this? Avery: Honey, it’s spun! Jerry Maguire: What did I do to you? Avery: It’s all about you, isn’t it? “Soothe me, save me, love me.” I have to finish my job. Jerry Maguire: Everything is on the run with us. Avery: We are salespeople. We sell. It’s not “trust my handshake.” It’s “make the sale. Get it signed.” Jerry Maguire: Welcome to my nightmare. Avery: Is honesty outlawed here? Jerry Maguire: I would […]

Independence day

By Stephen Tsai on August 19, 2010

Earlier this month, the presidents and athletic directors of eight Western Athletic Conference schools not named Boise State decided that unity was the best way to ensure the league’s stability. A pledge of allegiance was crafted and, for the lawyers’ sake, an exit penalty of $5 million was included. All agreed to the terms, although now, Nevada’s memory is a bit fuzzy. The professed solidarity meant little during yesterday’s Ditch-Your-Ash Wednesday, when WAC members Fresno State and Nevada accepted invitations […]

Fresno State, Nevada to join MWC

By Stephen Tsai on August 18, 2010

Yep, it’s official.  WAC members Fresno State and Nevada have accepted invitations to join the Mountain West Conference. And, yes, it’s official.  The WAC and its most senior member — Hawaii — are in trouble. I suppose UH could wish upon a star that the MWC will offer an invitation.  More likely, UH is facing the probability of going independent in football. Maybe other sports, too. I mean, what’s softball, for instance, going to be like without Fresno State and […]

Kelly Majam

By Stephen Tsai on August 17, 2010

The news of All-America softball player Kelly Majam’s treatment for a cancerous thyroid is indeed a profile in courage. Majam, who had her thyroid removed July 27 and will undergo a one-time radiation treatment in December, will be able to play during the 2011  season. As expected of the gregarious third-year sophomore, she was upbeat at today’s news conference — optimistic about her treatment and thankful of her faith. Here’s the story: Kelly Majam. Star-Advertiser’s Jason Kaneshiro and Dave Reardon […]

Rausch named No. 2 QB

By Stephen Tsai on August 16, 2010

It’s official: Brent Rausch has been named the No. 2 quarterback. Rausch and Bryant Moniz, the No. 1 quarterback, were the only QBs to take snaps during today’s 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.  Also today:  • Slotback/punt returner Ryan Henry suffered a strained big toe. He said the injury is not serious. Miah Ostrowski took reps as the No. 2 left slotback.  • The Warriors worked on kick-blocking drills. John Hardy-Tuliau, Sterling Jackson and Siaki Cravens were the most successful.  • […]

Manoa makeover

By Stephen Tsai on August 15, 2010

Some newcomers have been making an impression during UH football training camp: • John Hardy-Tuliau — He’s having a breakout camp, especially on special teams. His future is at cornerback. He was getting a lot work there in the week that Lameterius Davis was held out while awaiting medical clearance.  • Allen Sampson — Easily one of the quickest on the team, he’s starting to pick up the offense. Might be difficult to get playing time at slotback, but he […]

Saturday's ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on August 14, 2010

Well, so much for the announced scrimmage. It was a regular practice, although the Warriors went full-speed on field-goal kicks and PATs, and full contact on drills matching the linebackers and DBs against the scout offense.  * * * * * *  Starting left cornerback Lametrius Davis, who underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in May, has been cleared to practice: * * * * * Assistant coach Cal Lee warms up his arm for a pass-rushing drill …  […]
