Wednesday report

By Stephen Tsai on September 22, 2010

OK, I was correct that today is Wednesday. Hey, it was a loooong trip.  But I was wrong that it would be a long practice. The Warriors completed their work, in the rain, in 90 minutes. Of course, right when they decided it was pau hana time, it stopped raining.  Defensive tackle Siasau Matagiese, a transfer from Portland State, began practicing with the Warriors. He was wearing  a blank green jersey. Kaniela Tuipulotu did not know his name, but referred […]

“Game-Plan Tuesday”

By Stephen Tsai on September 21, 2010

With the Thursday start to the season and the consecutive road games, it is difficult to figure out the correct day. But now, with a home game on a Saturday, “Game Plan Tuesday” — when UH installs, well, its game plan — is actually on a Tuesday.  Here’s what happened today: • Matagisila Lefiti resumed practicing today. While he is “football ready,” according to the coaches, he still is not 100 percent “game ready.” He is expected to play against Charleston […]

Ironman

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2010

It was impressive linebacker Corey Paredes made 16 tackles against Colorado. It also was impressive Paredes played in every defensive snap in that game. Even more impressive: Paredes has played in every defensive snap this season. * * * * * Center Matagisila Lefiti today was medically cleared to practice. He underwent surgery in May for a fracture in his left foot. * * * * *  Happy birthday to my cousin, Shelley (Kubo) Okubo.  By the way, her sons […]

The day after

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2010

The Warriors arrived n town this morning after taking the 2 a.m. flight out of Las Vegas. The coaches will meet today, review videos of the loss to Colorado, and it’s back to business tomorrow morning in preparation for Saturday’s game against Charleston Southern.  In the grand scheme for the Warriors, the loss has little impact in their two-tier quest: 1) Win the WAC. 2) Qualify for the Hawaii Bowl. Their first WAC game is not until Oct. 2. And […]

Colorado surges past UH, 31-13

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2010

BOULDER — For the Warriors, there was disappointment — and self-directed anger — after squandering several opportunities in a 31-13 loss to Colorado.  In each of their first two drives, the Warriors had first-and-goal situations from the 3. Both times they came away with nada.  And when Colorado went to the no-huddle offense in the second half, the gasping Warriors’ defense collapsed.  There was some good that came out of the loss, but not enough to feel good.  * * […]

Rocky road

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2010

The Warriors arrived in the Rocky Mountains this afternoon, and went straight to Boulder, Colo., where they had a walk-through at Folsom Field.  They were greeted by a special host — Ralphie, the Buffaloes’ buffalo.  After the team returned to the buses, the gates were closed, and Ralphie was allowed to roam Folsom Field.  After that, it was to the hotel in Westminster. The area is really nice. There’s a mall, movie complex and skating rink across the street.  UH […]

Warriors in a bowl game

By Stephen Tsai on September 16, 2010

* * * * *  SUMMERLIN, Nev. — The Warriors today conducted their final practice in Summerlin before Saturday’s road game against Colorado.  Instead of the promised 90-minute practice, the Warriors went 2 hours. Offense is looking sharp, particularly the passing game. Former UH basketball coach Riley Wallace, who lives part-time in Las Vegas, stopped by. He was impressed with quarterback Bryant Moniz’s arm, decision-making and “toughness.”  The defense also went through their multiple schemes. There will be a different […]

Wednesday in the desert

By Stephen Tsai on September 15, 2010

SUMMERLIN, Nev. — It was long practice today — 2.5 hours — but the Warriors were able to implement their defensive schemes for this game. • Linebacker Aaron Brown resumed practicing this morning after being held out of yesterday’s workout because of  a head “ding” incurred during the Army game. He did not suffer a concussion. Although Brown practiced with the safeties last week as part of a special defensive plan, he is back at linebacker and not being considered as […]
