Ironman

It was impressive linebacker Corey Paredes made 16 tackles against Colorado.

It also was impressive Paredes played in every defensive snap in that game.

Even more impressive: Paredes has played in every defensive snap this season.

Center Matagisila Lefiti today was medically cleared to practice. He underwent surgery in May for a fracture in his left foot.

Wow, at that altitude it is amazing that Paredes played every snap! Still, he might have been even more effective if he was able to take a breather for a few plays while his backup was in the game. But I guess the coaches feel that a tired Paredes is better than his fresh backup…

    Alright!!!, Corey.

When Pennigton was the starter for the Dolphins…more throws went in the direction of Bess; now that Henne is the starter….very few tosses in Bess’ direction???..is it just me or what?

  17. mctruck September 20, 2010 7:58 am

I guess Henne is always looking for Marshall and what’s that other guy?

  18. Garret September 20, 2010 8:00 am

    mctruck,

Bess had 6 catches last week. Miami only had 9 completions yesterday so there weren’t many receptions to go around. Bess caught more passes with Henne than Pennington last season if I remember correctly.

  22. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 8:12 am

Short yardage offense (run and pass – use other personnel if necessary); Stop the dropsies

Need pressure on opposing QB’s; Can’t stop the run (even when we know it’s coming); Need more vocal/(animated?) leaders

    Second half meltdowns

I want to hear from specific coaches as to why their part of the team is failing, and what can be done to correct it immediately. After all, they are the ones getting paid to teach.

  27. jeezy33 September 20, 2010 8:27 am

SERIOUSLY!!/???? We get our a$$ beat and were giving props to one of our defensive guys? We just lost a game. We should be talking what needs to be done to help us get better.

Maybe i could understand if he was getting sacks, forcing fumbles, getting tackles for loss… None of our UH players are making plays forcing negative plays for the opposing offense or turnovers. Maybe HArdy tuilau.

  28. Garret September 20, 2010 8:29 am

Even more impressive: Paredes has played in every defensive snap this season.

    ST,

Why did Paredes play every snap in the USC and Colorado games when the last drive in both the Colorado and USC game were after the outcome was decided?

Shouldn’t his backup get *some* game reps to gain valuable experience?

What if Paredes gets hurt, doesn’t his backup need some game reps at the position in games so that he’s ready to play? Doesn’t playing Paredes at the end of blowouts increase his risk of injury, especially since fatigue increases the probability of injuries?

Paredes is a senior, so doesn’t UH want someone to get some game experience that will be back next season at the position? Wouldn’t a good time for that be when the score was 31-13 and Colorado ran 4 plays to end the game? Or when USC was up by 13 and there was less than a minute left?

Mack talks all the time about how he likes to rotate players on defense to keep players fresh so that they can play fast. So, why is Paredes playing every play, including when the games are over and all the backups should be playing?

I know that Mack himself said last season that a starter on offense (Salas) refused to come out at the end of a blowout even though the coaches wanted to give his backup some game reps…is that happening on defense also? Do the coaches not see any benefit of giving the backups some game reps? I saw a lot of other starters in at the end of the Colorado game so this isn’t just about Paredes.

I just cannot see how what ST posted about Paredes is good for the *team*. It is impressive that Paredes has the stamina and desire to play every play. But coaches decide who play and I don’t see the benefit of playing a starter every down of every game no matter the score, elevation, or situation.

I’m giving myself a timeout after this post. If UH blows out Charleston Southern (which I think will happen) and Paredes plays every play, I will really go nuts.

  29. wait a minute September 20, 2010 8:42 am

So the roster is wrong and Paredes is really a senior? Then that isn’t good.

  30. jeezy33 September 20, 2010 8:43 am

Time to go to 3-4 . If we want any chance in the WAC

  31. Souljah September 20, 2010 8:49 am

  33. wait a minute September 20, 2010 8:51 am

  34. Markazulu September 20, 2010 8:52 am

Individual accolades is Great but you know what thats the problem this is a TEAM sport. They need to play as a Unit not only have certain individuals stand out. Some good teams have that. But Great Teams have more than a few making plays. We need more Leaders I dont see that on either side of the ball.

  38. papajoe2 September 20, 2010 9:02 am

Looks like Pomai’s early post lists everyone predicting UH to win this Saturday, most by blowouts. After watching 3 games, I just don’t have a good feeling or should I say confidence about the game. Will we take this losing Div. II (I just don’t know what they call it nowadays) team too lightly? Even though they are a “lesser” team, all they have to do is run the ball to eat up the clock and keep our offense off the field. Hopefully, they don’t have a good running game. If UH does blow this team out, I hope it will give them confidence for the rest of the season.

  39. al September 20, 2010 9:04 am

it is a growing concern that when the situation calls for it, the bench should be cleared.

  40. Derek September 20, 2010 9:05 am

What do we have to lose? I think we should blitz more and run the style that Joe Lee Dunn used to run at New Mexico when he was a defensive coordinator. I remember they used to get 7 or more sacks per game with an all out style of defense that scared the hell out of the opposing QBs who were running for their life. We are not attacking enough on defense. Maybe we are thinking too much. Maybe the defense should just let their instinct do the playing and just react naturally. Obviously, they are not a confident bunch over there. Either way, we have to change how we play defense. If we don’t we’ll get the same results of staying on the field too long. Can you imagine what Nevada will do to us running the ball?

On the other side, play calling in the red zone needs to improve. Mantra, get the ball in the playmakers hands and let them catch and run. Who’s the power back? Practice the read/option. Show some imagination for goodness sakes! And let’s not take Charleston Southern lightly. If we do, we will lose. There have been many examples of FCS teams beating FBS teams this year already. Just because we are playing at home doesn’t mean anything. We have to start making a statement after the last debacle.

  43. Shoko September 20, 2010 9:06 am

#47 al, I have to agree with dat. I do bitch and grumble but still a Warrior fan, win or lose.

My bad on the CSU record. They do have a winning team at 2-1. Leading individual rusher for 1 game at 50 yards if I read the stats correctly.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid September 20, 2010 9:20 am

    Corey is a great player.

Why not leave it at that?

  53. uhfan09 September 20, 2010 9:24 am

I know assignment football is good but we need to learn how to tackle first. I mean if the player is in perfect position and doesnt tackle and wrap up whats the point of being there in the first place. The cure go live hitting in situations not two hand touch or what ever they do.I will always say you play games how you practice during the week. Doesnt the coaches realize that after two years and three games. My prediction is good first half and poor second half like usual uh 28-24 real close.

  54. Pomai September 20, 2010 9:25 am

I do beleive that this is a very important game for UH, at least PR wise more so than the next few. If we don’t man handle these guys, or if they manage to win, we havn’t heard anything yet from the bandwagon. You will hear an uproar for Mack’s head plus his staff.

  56. RedZone September 20, 2010 9:47 am

I think they should use Paipai at ILB then we would have a good sized athletic player in there. Corey makes a lot of tackles but it is usually after the runningback has gained 4,5 or more yards. We still need that run stopping linebacker that can quickly make that read and step into the hole and be strong enough to stop the running back dead in his tracks. Watching our linebackers get dragged downfield is not fun to watch.

  57. d1島 September 20, 2010 9:48 am

Man! I know some teams gotta plug in the “directional schools” in their schedule (i.e.- Northeast West Central Middle Arkansas Tech State U.) but Charley South’s opponent last week was from Mars!

Gerald Stevenson and A.J. Toscano posted career days as Charleston Southern put up 445 yards of offense in a 28-14 victory over Mars Hill, Saturday at Buccaneer Field.

  58. Turfwar September 20, 2010 9:51 am

DPK got it right. This is Corey’s moment and for all the work he’s put in as a walk-on 35 pounds ago to a starter who’s depended on by the team and coaches he is very deserving of any accolades he gets this week. If there’s a problem on defense it’s not Corey.

  63. d1島 September 20, 2010 9:56 am

Well, at least one side will be praying for a victory!

    Next week’s game against Hawaii:

A whole five minutes after the game, and I get asked about Hawaii. The first thing I’m trying to do is not to let anybody think about Hawaii until the game was over. That’s always a difficult thing. I don’t think you have to do a whole lot to motivate people to play an FBS opponent. These guys always dream, growing up, of having a chance to play on a stage like that. The next best thing to playing for these FBS teams is playing against them. So, we’ll be motivated to go out and play a good football game, to represent the university, to represent the Lord and the things that we do.

  64. d1島 September 20, 2010 9:59 am

Boy, I’m almost not that sure their coach is actually talking about a player leading their team?

We have great leadership, but I don’t underestimate what God can do. I don’t underestimate what the leadership on this team can do.

  66. NCAA September 20, 2010 10:03 am

It seems like tackling is a big issue for the Warriors. Somehow for some reason they seem to make mental mistakes in crucial times. Correctable mistakes are not being corrected. During the days leading up to the game it is reported that game plans and corrections have been implemented yet come game time…I don’t know. Things just go wrong. You could say that the Warriors were lucky to win at Army.

Seeing how things are playing out for the other WAC teams I don’t think the Warriors will have a winning record this season. Again I hope I am wrong.

This should be a win for the Warriors. No altitude, no travel.

    44 – 9 Warriors win.

    Michigan Warrior,

“Disaster management” is more appropriate for the events of August 18, 2010.

  70. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 10:11 am

My guess with allowing Corey Paredes to stay in for the whole game might be the same for allowing Salas to do that last year… perhaps they are trying to create bigger leaders out of those who were already voted on (or those who are looked up to) to lead. As of now, I haven’t really seen any standout leaders on the defensive side. True, several players have had their moments in each of the three games, but none, aside from Corey, have been consistent throughout. He needs backup from everyone on every down!

    Just my guess…

  71. d1島 September 20, 2010 10:13 am

Of course “playing up” doesn’t always turn out to be a positive thing.

D3 Menlo College went to D2 Humboldt St. for a game and emotions got carried away to the tune of 23 total penalties for a combined 260 yards assessed against the two teams.

Bad feelings carried over to the post-game.

”We need to control our emotion. Learn to control aggression,” (HSU HC) Smith said. “We were high energy tonight but it was not malicious.”

The Oaks apparently thought it was as the team refused to shake hands with the Jacks and marched right off the field following the game. As they walked away, some HSU players waved as they departed and a few Menlo athletes answered with the middle finger salute.

Menlo coaches were nowhere to be found to get a comment on the situation.

”I’m disappointed,” Smith said. “The players worked hard to get this win. This is two years now (Menlo’s head coach Fred Guidici) hasn’t come over to shake our hands.”

  72. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 10:14 am

  74. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 10:16 am

For 2 and 1/4 seasons, this Warrior football coaching staff has consistently shown the inability to ADJUST for the second half. With the exception of a FEW games, it’s been too predictable that a winable game or at least one, that we are managing for 2 quarters can slip away.

I’m not going to predict anymore going forward, whatever will be will be and Jim Donovan will have some MORE on his plate to ponder come late December of this year.

  75. al September 20, 2010 10:19 am

    d1…hmmmmm.

  76. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 10:19 am

We started the season on a pretty good note… positive vibes from the USC game, followed by a very respectful, “class-act” feeling coming away from West Point. Yes, we have the same issues now, as we did then. But man, when our offense doesn’t produce like it’s designed to, our flaws on defense get exposed big time.

I want that feel good vibe to last through the whole season. Hope we can fix these things immediately. We need to inject some energy into our play… especially after the break!

We also need a plan for when a team goes to the no-huddle. If we play crazed and make the stops required, their no huddle only lasts three plays!!! Yeah, sometimes easier said, than done.

  77. al September 20, 2010 10:20 am

Hi DPK!!! Great minds think alike. Is there a reason why we can’t have the same score prediction?

  82. Jun Tao September 20, 2010 10:30 am

My thought is. . . I could only imagine what happens in practice with the SCOUT offense going up against the first team defense. I mean, hey, that scout team running back must look good against this defense.

The reason I say this is if the defense is missing their assignments/alignments in the GAME, then more likely then not they are missing it in practice. And practice is where it starts, which then points to coaching.

Even with the best of them, LaBoy, Sapoanga, Elimimian, Leonard, Tinoisamoa, etc… the defense was built on the bend but don’t break rule. Let the offense score as much as possible then try to limit the opposing team from scoring as much.

Yes, I am disappointed like many of you but I will support the team and the program to the end win lose or draw!

  83. NCAA September 20, 2010 10:31 am

    Another observation:

Warrior coaches look like they are playing checkers against chess champions. I’m not saying the Warrior coaches are inept. They are just being countered by better moves, that’s all.

With the exception of a FEW games, it’s been too predictable that a winable game or at least one, that we are managing for 2 quarters can slip away.Hawaii during the McMackin era is 8-19-2 in the second half. 8 wins, 19 losses, and 2 ties. If you disregard the first half score and only count the scores after halftime, we lose nineteen games and win eight. Now I’m getting more grumpy.

My question for ST (or Coach Mac): Why did Coach Mac start Tuliau and Brown instead of Falemalu and Daly-Lyles. Seems you would do this anticipating a passing team not a running team.

  90. performance coach September 20, 2010 11:01 am

    82 Jun Tao,

You’re right. I think it is too much to expect to shut opposing offenses down totally. Hold them down and outscore them is more feasible. Our offense has fumbled away our games. It really is that simple. Fumbles help to turn the momentum of the game. Our players need to understand that fumbling the ball will make us lose the game. Our QB has fumbled three times in the last two games, resulting in points for the other team or denying us points. The coaches have no control over fumbling. There are no “adjustments” to be made when a player fumbles. You just suck it up and play, and most often you lose the game.

I think there was a rule on the picks that you can’t have repeat prediction. I added an FG to solve that problem.

  92. Markazulu September 20, 2010 11:01 am

Well they still can win the WAC. They just need to play to there full potential. From everything I’ve seen they didnt do it yet. Warriors fight till the end which I hope they do for the rest of this season. Dont go down without a fight.

  93. madeinhawaii September 20, 2010 11:07 am

    Morning all..

I’m not so much frustrated with the loss than I am with our Warrior’s inability to capitalize on points in the redzone… especially on three trips to the 3 yard line with 4 chances to make it count each time..3 points out of 12 plays… aigoo! …. Maybe they just need to admit to themselves that they have no muscle up the middle in redzone situations and find ways to move the ball around…

  94. whitey September 20, 2010 11:07 am

  96. coach's cousin September 20, 2010 11:11 am

Why you guys grumbling about the coaches? What’s the matter with you guy? You guys call yourselves fans? I’ve met every single one of the coaches, and they are all very nice guys. They are trying hard and doing the best that they can. They really don’t have much experience you know. My cousin came from a high school. This is his first year coaching college football. He was a GA year’s ago, but this is his first year as a college coach. Cal Lee and Rich Miano are both great guys. They don’t have much college coaching experience other than coaching at Hawaii, so they only know what they have learned while coaching at Hawaii. Dave Aranda has a little bit of coaching experience, not that much, just a little. Tormey has a wealth of experience, but I’m not sure how much say that he has in the defense. So be nice, and give them a little bit of leeway to make mistakes. They are all just human beings, and are trying their best.

  97. whitey September 20, 2010 11:13 am

most of the football fans here have a good feeling about the warrior’s players, but what disturbs them are the coaches. to them, not able to score from inside the 5 is very poor coaching and not being prepared for each defensive snap is total ineptness of the dc. we all agree that the warriors have an excellent chance to do well this season.

  98. whitey September 20, 2010 11:18 am

read that the dc is going to correct the defensive mistakes. that is great, but my question is when and how will you do it when you can’t do the basics. maybe the warriors need a more simplif ied defensive scheme and one that can be used in games. 400+ pages is not reasonable because how often will you put those plays in game situations. i assume uh has a depth chart for each position, so why is it so hard to rotate players???? don’t they do that in practice????

  99. NCAA September 20, 2010 11:20 am

Obviously they are human beings and will make mistakes. But how many mistakes does it take before you learn from them? Coaches are paid to do the job. No leeway allowed.

coach’s cousin, i don’t think any of the fans dislike the coaches and most of the tsaiko probably know them personally. the flack is for not preparing for battle, not being able to read and change tactics, and mostly about basic issues of the game. there is no flack on the coaches as a person, but games are won or lost because of how you prepare for each battle. are we prepared to do battle this sat against csu?????

  103. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 11:28 am

No one is challenging or questioning the indivudal personalities of the coaching staff or what kind of people they are.

The University of Hawaii athletic department is in a tight situation. $10 million defecit, downward trend in attendance and overall appeal, etc…

Coach Mack is one of the most personable and likeable individuals UH has, he’s a gentleman, and even times when I would walk by or drive in to watch UH practice, he’d wave and say hello and I don’t know him on a personal level, but that’s the kind of man he is, but there is a bigger concern at hand and more is at stake than one job or several.

In 2008, I wanted more time for Coach Mack. Last season was rough, but we many here thought one more season would be the measuring stick, to a lesser extend some thought a fouth year was needed for “evaluation”.

With the circumstances surrounding the WAC and the survival of the UH athletic program, BASED ON FOOTBALL, the measuring stick is LARGER and the timeframe is smaller.

Time is no longer a luxury.

  104. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 11:29 am

Thing is… we need to make corrections during the game. Obviously, our opponent’s coaches are making changes and adjustments on the go. We need to counter what they do as well, and not wait for the after-action report to come to the conclusion that fixes were needed.

And yes… they are the ones getting paid to do this job. They didn’t just come out of high school into this position. They worked their way up, taking various paths along the way.

  105. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 11:30 am

Charleston Southern… at home against LaTech… and at home against Nevada.

We can set ourselves up for a three home game winning streak.

We have more schollie athletes than the Bucs.

LaTech has NEVER faired well at Aloha Stadium and they have a new coach.

Nevada has LOOKED impressive, but they still seem like the SAME team they have been over the past two seasons and Kaepernick has never fully dominated Hawaii, especially at Aloha Stadium.

The next three home games are ours to lose.

  112. Michigan Warrior September 20, 2010 11:49 am

Kazz, I was actually asking about the attitude itself… you know… the “This is battle. You must respond” attitude. Gotta stand tough. I think that’s also what Corey Paredes was trying to show his teammates by going the duration at elevation.

  113. NCAA September 20, 2010 11:54 am

Kaepernick had over 300 total yards against the Warriors, including over 100 yards rushing, when they last played in Hawaii. He played well. Now he is 2 years the wiser.

The Warriors are going to need to perform their assignments to the T and contain him. But first things first, prepare for this week.

  114. Derek September 20, 2010 11:57 am

Why don’t the defensive staff try to run a 5-2, especially on first down with also the strong safety available to come up and suppport the run. The cornerbacks have to play man to man and the free safety to roam the middle. Depending on what happens on first down will predicate type of defense thereafter. You have to make the offense predictable. What we need on the edge is speed to rush the passer. Why can’t we have John Hardy-Tuliau blitz more or somebody else who’s a hitter and has quickness. Believe me, sacking the QB or stopping a RB for a loss gets the crowd going. Heck, the team gets motivated too. UH’s best asset during the Tomey years is that the defense forced the action. They didn’t always have the talent level as the Nebraska’s or USCs, etc., but we were always happy that the defense played hard every down and every game. Somehow, we seem to be missing something now. Maybe, others can chime in on how they feel.

  115. uhfan09 September 20, 2010 11:58 am

coaches cousin, two years and three games is plenty of time. These coaches only think of how much yardage their offense will put up not scoring. Look 36 points first game 31 second and finally 13? seems like going down not up. Defense will not improve til they go live contact and running game will not improve until line practices short yardage if you cant get 1 yard good luck getting any.

  116. Markazulu September 20, 2010 11:58 am

The boys just gotta be ready to play football. The Coaches teaching can lead u in the rite direction but it’s up to the players. Bryant Moniz is a good quarterback but he needs to hone his ability to make himself a outstanding quarterback he get praise for his cool demeanor an his athletic ability but as a QB Leadership is key an I dont know if he has Complete trust in the Huddle. But you know what this team has talent just remember in 06 they started 1-2 an well the rest I’m sure you all remember what happened.

  117. SteveM September 20, 2010 12:01 pm

    Good noonish everyone!

Lunch time at work today. I normally don’t need a 48 hour timeout, but it helped this time. Clear. Next game: Charleston Southern and tailgate at Patio #5.

JJ was criticized for red zone problems too–esp. in 2006. Later, he lined up Kelikipi or Mauia (his version of the “Fridge”) and if was a fake dive, then a QB keeper around end. Later variations was a option pitch. Maybe the later with our current starting RBs?

  118. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 12:04 pm

    NCAA,

With their pistol option, one would expect Kaepernick to run that many, but in the games we have dealt with him, he wasn’t quite the deciding factor for Nevada and Nevada as a whole hasn’t been the offensive juggnaut that they appear to be.

Yes he’s a senior now and we’ll find out how “wiser” he’ll be this time around.

I still remember how Nevada was a bit of a turn-around game for us last season. We were on that horrible 6-game losing streak and Nevada was on an offensive tear, but when it was all said and done and IN Reno, Nevada walked away the winner by only 10 points agains our injury-ridden defense in 2009.

    We shall see…

Tsaikos and Fans that were on the road trip to either or both games MAHALO for your support. The FB Alums that we introduced to many of you were amazed at the numbers that took to the road!! I hope to have a list of the FB Alums that joined us at the games on the blog tomorrow.

    Down Memory Lane

In Colorado 6 of us who were recruited by Cal Murphy (Holmes era) got on the phone during the tailgate with Murph who lives in retirement in Canada. He was surprised to say the least.

    Early Awareness

Already the FB Alums who were in Colorado are talking about taking over Seattle next September in honor of the 1973 team who defeated the Huskies on their own turf. Plans are in the works for a special fundraiser out on Whidy Island at an estate of one of the alums. This will be a once in a lifetime event and funds raised will go to a Letterwinners Scholarship. As we garner more information from the planning group we will keep you informed.

Keep the faith! There is no football like Warrior Football, there is no university like UH-Manoa.

Agee with Derek-something missing on defense. In the past we had players that demoralized a offense with their hitting, examples Hiram Peters, Nate Jackson, Blaze Soares and Soli and Adam. Someone needs to step up and be the emotional captain that can fire up this defense and bring back the passion and attitude that is missing. Who’s going to step up?

  127. RedZone September 20, 2010 1:02 pm

Nevada is averaging over 50 points a game this year. The only way to beat them will be to out score them. Kapernick is a much better passer this year and UH does not have the players who kept him in check when he last played here. To beat Kapernick you have to keep him moving backwards and do not allow him to get to the outside where he will beat you with his speed.

  128. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 1:05 pm

    RedZone,

What was Nevada averaging in offense last season?

  129. NCAA September 20, 2010 1:05 pm

    Mr. Kazz,

It’s not like he had a lot of opportunities to play the Warriors at home. You may think he is not a deciding factor but realistically he is. He is the current WAC player of the week. The numbers he put up against Cal is a little bit better than the one he put up against the Warriors in ’08. The thing is he does present a problem to defenses.

Even though you say they lost by only 10 last year it is still a loss. K also had around 300 yards total offense that game.

There may or may not be a correlation to how the Warriors will perform against Nevada but Cal did beat up Colorado and Nevada just beat up Cal.

On any given Saturday, anything can happen, I hope it goes the Warriors way when Nevada comes to town. If the Warriors do not correct their mistakes it’s going to be a long night.

  130. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 1:07 pm

  131. madeinhawaii September 20, 2010 1:08 pm

Maybe we need a “special team” when we are inside of the 10 yard line… a team that practices 8-12 plays week, just to get inside the end zone. Put Graves or Austin in charge as QB and all the 2nd and/or third team backups.

  132. RedZone September 20, 2010 1:10 pm

    Go Warriors.

    Time to kick some bucs.

  133. NCAA September 20, 2010 1:10 pm

  134. madeinhawaii September 20, 2010 1:10 pm

    Kazz…

I want to see all the 1st team out there so that there will be no more excuses and we really get to see what our boys can do. It was just so frustrating to see the team work so hard to get where they got and come out of it, empty handed.. or 3 out of a possible 21 points.. sigh.

  135. RedZone September 20, 2010 1:12 pm

Kazz approx. 38 points per game.

  136. madeinhawaii September 20, 2010 1:13 pm

make that 3 out of a possible 24… and the bad snaps..one in the endzone…yikes!… C’mon our offense can do better… have done better.. and they should be good enough to keep the defense off the field long enough for them to get a breather, too.

We beat ourselves.. but I suppose the team feels much worse than I do. Cause they know they are all better than what the score shows…

    Warriors regroup..

    Warriors IMUA!

  137. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 1:14 pm

    NCAA,

I just don’t plain like Nevada and I cited past instances.

Yes, on ANY given day ANY team can lose and that goes for ALL college sports.

As far as comparative scores are concerned, yes I did think about the CAL/Nevada/Colorado thing not too long after I spak’d the final score on my phone on Saturday, I think we might be able to throw that out the window a bit.

Not sure what it has been, but Nevada teams, sans basketball, has always played a little behind their ususal pace when coming to the islands.

But yes, the Bucs are the focus of the week!

  138. Warrior Expat September 20, 2010 1:14 pm

Argh, that Colorado game was frustrating. Looking forward to some better games as the season goes on.

Thinking about flying from the mainland to catch another home game between now and December. Any thoughts on which one would be a good one to catch?

  139. RedZone September 20, 2010 1:15 pm

UH is in trouble this year! Colorado should have been a win plain and simple. Mack screwed up! Shoot, now UH has to scramble to just have a winning season. Need to go 6-4 the rest of the season! I don’t think so. Nevada, Boise, Fresno, Utah St. are guarantee loses. San Jose and La Tech will be hard for UH to win. Only sure wins remaining are Charleston Who and possibly Idaho.

UH defensive players are just to small. Can’t stop the run and can’t defend the pass. Just throw over the short DB’s. Tackle, tackle, tackle, learn the basics.

  147. Freddy V September 20, 2010 2:07 pm

  150. A-House September 20, 2010 2:12 pm

ST saw Mrs A-House and Midori in NY and his first question was “where is mr grumpy?”

First impressions: NY is now a lot cleaner that 2 decades ago; tons of “cops” in and around Tiems Square; West Point left am impression on me – gotta be an OCS grad to appreciate what “cadets” have in their favor, but not necesarily the best of character; Denver is nice and the staff at our hotel were really cordial – they even served “spam” for our breakfast buffet!

Observations: failure by the team to execute plays – missed assingments, poor tackling, poor blocking, and most glaring at Colorado was the near total lack of enthusiasm. Coaching lost the Colorado game; it should have been a win – no questions!!!!!!!

Yes, coaches, it was your fault and if you cannot accept this, then it will be a long season and no bowl games!!!

Kudos to Corey. Coach Aranda says he’s turning out to be a leader on the defense. It does take ALL 11 guys on the field playing TOGETHER. They’re going to work on it. I don’t know that much, but it was nice to be able to follow half of what the coach was explaining and to see what should have happened if a player had stayed on his assignment in a scheme.

I’ll let Kekoa or d1 explain more of what we heard. Good Hawaiian fuud today! mmm, lau lau…

So in other words, let’s support the team and Go Warriors.

It was great to see the A-House family (again), as well as Stretch, chawan_cut, Curt, and Meg at the Colorado game.

Colorado started picking up good chunks of rushing yards in the second half and was able to make up their deficit, but once they caught up and started going no-huddle, I knew the game was over. I agree that the coaching for this game was a primary contributor for this loss, but then again, we have a record of 1 win and a billion losses against BCS-teams on the road, so if one was playing the numbers game, this loss shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone. Even so, we should have won this…Colorado isn’t Washington State horrible, but they’re fairly bad relative to their BCS counterparts given their play so far this season. I hope the team can learn from this and move on as WAC play commences in two weeks.

Coincidentally, I go down to my seat just after kickoff and who do I see sitting in the two seats next to mine? It was none other than Curt and Meg! Pure coincidence; we didn’t buy our tickets together.

    – mini laulau is humbug (the “pine nuts” of Hawaiian fuud)

    – big chunks o’ chicken in the long rice

  160. Slugger September 20, 2010 2:45 pm

    d1,

Really? What kine tomatoes should they be? Lomi was good on the salad, though.

  161. NCAA September 20, 2010 2:51 pm

    Ms. Slugger,

I assume the Warriors video’d all practices during spring and fall camps. If the coaches reviewed the defensive alignment and assignments against the scout team and deemed it game ready, then as many have mentioned, it is the in game coaching that is lacking. Someone is failing to communicate the adjustments needed to the players or worse the coaches don’t notice that an adjustment is needed.

  162. d1島 September 20, 2010 2:54 pm

    NCAA,

Do you have any teenagers in your house?

  163. RupertDaStupert September 20, 2010 2:56 pm

There’s no accident why the run and shoot under June Jones was successful. A perfectionist who demanded of himself and his crew. Repititious practices until everyone got it “right”. There’s no accident why the run and shoot is having trouble under the present administration. There’s no accident why Hawaii Five-O premiering tonight was a successful. Jack Lord demanded perfection of himself and his crew. Repititious rehersals until everyone got it “right”. Tonight as you hear Morton Stevens theme song, it gives me chicken skin. Why Jack Lord loved Hawaii and retired here. Why June Jones said he will retire in Hawaii. And why the best theme song ever made, “I like it better than the Notre Dame fight song”, tells it all.

  164. d1島 September 20, 2010 3:01 pm

    btw, it’s Ms

    not Ms.

  165. miami beach rentals September 20, 2010 3:03 pm

The 2010 Miami Dolphins are off to a great start to the season. Hard nose defense wins games.

  166. Ipu Man September 20, 2010 3:05 pm

On Liz Chun show last night, coach Mac said

Charleston has a top NFL receiver prospect.

    Methinks a Jerry Rice-type…

    Pomai:

    UH 34 Charley 33

  167. NCAA September 20, 2010 3:09 pm

    Mr. d1島,

    I am a teenager.

BTW, I use Ms. with the period. Up to you if you want to use it without it.

  168. d1島 September 20, 2010 3:15 pm

For what word is Ms. an abbreviation?

  169. Ipu Man September 20, 2010 3:18 pm

    In my webster’s dictionary

Ms. or Ms is both ok.

  170. Slugger September 20, 2010 3:22 pm

    M-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i …. ?

  171. NCAA September 20, 2010 3:23 pm

Ms. or Ms is acceptable. British or American versions are both acceptable. It can also be stated that Mr. and Mr are both acceptable.

It’s just a title of respect I use when addressing those that I’m presuming are my elders. Nothing more nothing less.

I don’t see why you are harping on the term Ms. since it’s been in use for decades. I also don’t know if Slugger is a Mrs. so I use the term Ms. (with the period, my choice)

  172. Ipu Man September 20, 2010 3:26 pm

wonder if the karaoke crowd sings

    “Mr. & Mrs. Mississippi”?

  173. Slugger September 20, 2010 3:28 pm

    d1 ~

Dose weren’t Roma tomatoes in the lomi which is fine with me… a bit sweet, though, instead of salty for lomi salmon… glad the bread pudding was cut into smaller pieces.

    K, I need to do stuff… laters…

  174. Slugger September 20, 2010 3:29 pm

    NCAA,

You’re ok… I used Ms. even when I was a Mrs. … the young people I know call me Aunty.

  175. Ipu Man September 20, 2010 3:30 pm

I’d like to see 3 quarters with the first string Sat.

and 2nd and 3rd stringers get a chance in the 4th.

  176. d1島 September 20, 2010 3:31 pm

….did not say it was, or wasn’t acceptable.

But it did take you off your game for a bit. 😉

  177. Scrooge September 20, 2010 3:37 pm

    Bah Humbug!!!

  178. Scrooge September 20, 2010 3:38 pm

We’ll never make it to another Hawaii Bowl. Not with the present coaching staff.

  179. grumpy September 20, 2010 3:38 pm

Scrooge is making me even more grumpy.

  180. NCAA September 20, 2010 3:39 pm

When you wrote in your #164 that it is not Ms. then what else am I to interpret? That to me meant Ms. is incorrect, therefore, in my mind you meant it to be unacceptable.

Now back to the defense. What lineup will Coach Aranda feature this Saturday? Personnel changes again?

  181. SteveM September 20, 2010 3:44 pm

d1島 — did you notice I said we discovered someone who can do Karen Carpenter songs after you left Saturday night? 😕 Big surprise. Figure out who it is by process of elimination….

  182. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 3:46 pm

Hawaii Five O was never our “fight song”, just a supplement and it’s own unwritten culture amongst UH athletics.

I think it’s cool that we have a song like this to play as one of our own. Unofficial, yet official in a way.

Now that they prostituted that song with the USC marching band playing it for a television commercial for the new Hawaii Five O show, it’s lost on me…. 🙁

  183. d1島 September 20, 2010 3:46 pm

    Mr./Mrs./Miss/Ms/Ms. NCAA,

No idea what Coach Aranda will come up with for Saturday. Better for Charley South to find out Saturday night, no?

  184. Kekoa September 20, 2010 3:48 pm

The Warrior Beat Express dropped off D-1 at his home in Waipio and continued on to da Wessai. Traffic was like the calm before the storm. I arrived safely at home on the ceded lands of Kaope’a, nestled in the Villages of Kapolei.

I see Slugger mentioned her big win – as the Tsaiko table almost always produces a winner! The Blogmeister was campaining for the Helmet! I came within 2 numbers of it! Even Robert Kekaula was hoping for a win!

Coach Aranda did some fancy dancin’ about the defense. I asked him about Corey Paredes and his Herculean effort of making 16 tackles. I acknowledged his 16 tackles, and asked him, “Who is Corey’s back up?” Before I got a chance to ask him the 2nd part of that question, he apparently anticipated it. He answered that the reason why Corey had to remain on the field was because of the ‘no huddle’ strategy. He gave him the highest praise of all, but I’m sorry…that’s not enuff. It’s unacceptable. Just my humble opinion.

I hate to see the kid risk injury. Even if we all witnessed his stalwart play, and thought it was almost superhuman, “what if?”

Coach broke down the technicals involved in plugging the basic holes in the D-line. The game film clearly showed examples of the successful stops that were made…but none of the ones that we remember allowed the large chunks of real estate to be taken from us was included in the clips. The Clip Monster strikes again!

Another person questioned the breakdown in coverage that allowed the run-pass play that went for long yardage and a TD. Like everything else, coach Aranda took the blame. He promised that they would be working hard at making the corrections. He expressed his confidence in the boys getting it right for this week’s game.

Please refer to Na Koa site for more of the technicals of the skull session. Coach very patiently explained how each person on the “D” carried out their assignments, then ran the film to show exactly how it was done.

    Go Warriors!

I would love to attend one of those meetings at the Willows following a game. How much does it cost and are reservations required?

  194. Kekoa September 20, 2010 3:57 pm

MW ~ In case you missed this post early this AM on the old blog:

Michigan Warrior ~ Looking forward to seeing you and your ohana at Vegas on 9/17/11. We had such a great gathering there last year, that more Tsaiko’s from around the country have already expressed a desire to attend.

Stay tuned to SteveM’s website. He will post all the information needed to obtain tickets. He usually tells everyone how & where the post & pre-game events will be. He also provides lodging info for those who want to let others know where they can be reached.

I usually host a post game party for those that decide to stay longer, so you can always email me at kekoa22atAOLdotcom for more information.

    Kekoa,

You are right. When the air is thin and the body is laboring and oxygen is hard to come by with each sprint, tackle and bone-jarring hit, it’s harder and harder for the mind to process what is happening and sooner or later physical reaction time to prevent injury becomes a liability.

  196. d1島 September 20, 2010 3:58 pm

    $15. no resv

  197. Kekoa September 20, 2010 3:59 pm

  198. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 4:00 pm

    Gigi,

    $15.00, plus $3.00 for parking.

NO reservations. First come, first serve.

Usually a light buffet of kalua pork, laulau, chicken, poke, a salad or two, rice, and some kind of dessert, but it still is a buffet and you can return for your fill and then some.

    Gigi,

You might like the Na Koa luncheons better than the Call The Coach shows. I wasn’t a fan of the current location. When I went for Bob Coolen’s appearance, it was distracting to try to listen to Coach Coolen over this live band playing at the bar a few feet over.

Bobby Curran looked irritated also because of that.

This is the ONLY time I’ll sound like a fuddy duddy when complaining about extra noise. 😉

Are there any open tables so that I can sit by myself. Usually no one wants to sit by me. I’m not sure why? I enjoy good or bad conversation. Either way, it doesn’t matter. I mean good. Or bad. Conversation I mean. Do the coaches give autographs. That would be fun to an get an autograph. I have albums that still are in good shape. Does anyone have a phonograph? My grandfather used to have a phonograph. We used to listen to Karen Carpenter. I’m so sad that she died. Yes, sooooo sad. Real sad. That is sad. I enjoyed her music. Quite sad.

  207. gigi-hawaii September 20, 2010 4:09 pm

Kazz, I cannot drive at night because of poor night vision, anyway, so the lunch at the Willows is better for me.

I just hope we win this week or the meeting will be depressing.

  208. d1島 September 20, 2010 4:11 pm

    Coaches coach, instruct, teach…

Since spring ball the coaches talked about SC’s motion and shifts and the corresponding calls needed on the field to counter. Same instructions given thruout fall camp.

    First play…shift, motion. No call.

    Coaches remind player…gotta make calls.

    Second play….shift, motion. No call.

    Eo na toa E.

    Coaches respond.

  212. Pride. September 20, 2010 4:17 pm

    D1.

    1. Do it right

    2. Do it 100%

Need both ingredients. No sense playing hard if you are not doing it right. I kind of had a feeling that they were missing that part of the formula. Cooaches have to find a way to motivate the players to do it right. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you can’t do it right, or don’t give 100%. you don’t play.

  213. Kekoa (iPhone) September 20, 2010 4:17 pm

Kazz is correct. The venue is in an outdoor setting, and the one time I went, it rained and our umbrella had several pukas!

You have to order pupu off the menu. Slow service and high prices. Taste?…yuuck!

Valet parking only. Validated, but expensive.

At the Willows, valet parking is free with your validated ticket. The food choices have always been outstanding.

    Gigi,

If I didn’t work, I’d go to a Na Koa luncheon and have done so in the past even after a loss.

Even after a loss, it was good to hear something directly out of the coach’s mouth. They know they are in front of boosters. Boosters of humble income like all of us here (most of us 😉 ) and boosters of good wealth are in attendance at these luncheons.

In Kekoa’s case, he tried to get an answer but apparently never got what he wanted or expected, but without trying to speak for Kekoa, if that were me, I would at least know that I got my opinion across to the coach directly and if he chooses to address it in public or in private is his kuleana.

In other words, most board members of a corporation sometimes SWEAT bullets when speaking to other shareholders…

  222. d1島 September 20, 2010 4:29 pm

Kekoa, mahalo for the summary, AND for the info on future get-togethers.

Watching Hawaii 5-0 right now, and kinda getting distracted. At least they talk some pidgin in this newer version. I just hope they don’t overdo it and it comes off sounding labored. Some of the footage is shot in-your-face with a moving, bouncing camera. Can make people dizzy during intense action scenes. (I forget the name of that movie running through the woods with that handheld camera… that’s what I was trying to say.)

By the way… so much for Coach Aranda’s answer on why Corey stayed in for the duration. Colorado didn’t stay with the no-huddle for the entire game.

Interesting news emerging that not only Texas State and UTSA but also as many as EIGHT other schools may be making presentations to the WAC ADs next week about joining the conference:

    http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/20/pair-of-texas-schools-to-state-case-for-wac-membership/

Also, reports are coming out that the University of Denver will be a candidate to join as a non-football member:

wow. things are looking up for the WAC!!!

  249. momona September 20, 2010 5:08 pm

Before the start of the season, the ideal scenario for the intial 3 games would have been competitive loss to USC, win at Army and at Colorado. Next best scenario, 1 and 2 losses with UH being competitive in both losses. Worst scenario, 0-3.

After 3 games, we are in the best scenario – we just need to have some adjustments which will begin on Saturday.

The Colorado students came out in force. They were loud and also in unison with their cheers. Cmon UH students, come out to the games and support your school!!!

  250. HawaiiMongoose September 20, 2010 5:09 pm

Another report on Denver applying for WAC membership, this one from Andy Katz at ESPN:

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/blog/_/name/katz_andy/id/5595978/pioneers-aim-impress-wac-officials

I’m thinking that the earlier report that the WAC is looking at as many as eight candidate schools may be in error. The reporter could have mis-heard Karl Benson’s statement that the WAC expects to have at least eight members in 2012. However Katz’s report says there are at least five schools talking to the WAC membership committee about the possibility of joining the conference (Texas State, UTSA, Montana, U. of Denver, Seattle U.).

  260. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 5:27 pm

    Steve,

Nevada had a decent softball program. Looks like they might be headed for a bit of a decline. They were a THORN in the sides of the Wahine for several seasons as much as Fresno was and the Wolfpack even ousted the Wahine out of the 2008 WAC tounament hosted right here in Hawaii, but yes they do have softball.

Boise State JUST entered D1 softball two seasons ago and even that they look to be a team posied to continue to improve. Kelly Majam got her UH record breaking individual home run stat of 22 in Boise this past season and Coach Coolen got his 700th victory the next day in Game 3 of the series in Boise.

Dave Aranda was in another conference room working on D for the USC game.

Wish someone would donate bucks to the UH program so they could develop/buy an interactive computer gaming simulator (& someone to program it) to teach the players to recognize schemes & learn the playbook. It’s in the recognition of what your opponent is doing, as well as keeping an eye on your assignment, and remembering what you’re supposed to do in the heat of battle, and then getting your body to move the way you’re supposed to that makes a play successful…lots to do & remember in a couple of seconds. That’s why “Perfect practice makes perfect.”

    Steve,

Seattle University actually came down here and played the Wahine during the Bank of Hawaii Invitational Tournament and I believe we beat them 9-0. Seattle University does play D-1 softball in the ONLY Division 1 softball only conference known as the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.

As for the other teams like Texas State and UT San Antonio, they are not D1, they are D2, and already you can just know that the most obvious drop off in talent and skill will be in the pitching circle. I don’t how they’ve faired in their respective conferences or seaons, but I doubt they’d be a threat to other current WAC teams (sans FSU and UNR). Teams like this usually compensate for speed on the bases.

But speaking of Texas State, there is some more scheduling tweaking that needs to be done before the 2011 Wahine softball schedule is deemed complete and Texas State is a team wanting to come play against UH. I would love to see that!

Last I checked, WAC softball needs 6 to have that auto qualifier for the NCAAs and right now with BSU, FSU, and UNR out of the WAC picture for the future, the WAC ONLY has UH, USU, NMSU, SJSU, and LaTech. Idaho does NOT have a softball team.

At this point, beggars cannot be choosers and I would GLADLY like to have Texas State, Seattle U, and UT San Antonio added to the WAC softball outlook.

    Steve,

I ain’t gonna lie… The Wahine softballer’s RPI WILL be severly injured in the years to come. Whether or not we stay in the WAC with these new additions or even if we transplant our other non-football teams to a conference like the Big West, the softball team’s RPI would be ghastly…

The one thing UH softball fans can hope for is a continuation of STRONG non conference opponents Coach Coolen has been able to schedule year in and year out. Last year worked out well for the Wahine with teams like UW, Stanford, CAL, and DePaul coming to play the Wahine at Manoa. I believe the highest our RPI was prior to the NCAA tournament was 14, but as a conference, the WAC was rated 9th and Fresno State BARELY got that at large bid as they lost the WAC tourney to us.

This season, Coach Coolen has said that the non-conference schedule isn’t as good as last year’s. I think he only noted CAL as one of the more notable teams coming to Hawaii to play these non-conference tournaments. Keep in mind this shouldn’t be a trend as schedules are made about two years in advance with only a handful of games being needed to be filled within a few months time.

    Kazz,

Took words right out of my mouth. Hope she eventually transfers over to the wahine side. Kari may have something to say about it since Robyn dethroned Kari as the starting setter when both played for the Wahines.

  284. papajoe2 September 20, 2010 6:11 pm

Kazz, One thing about softball. If you get just 1 outstanding person that can pitch, then the team could be competitive. Sure a good defense and some hitting would help, and also decent backup pitching, but because of the natural rotation of softball pitchers’ delivery, they could pitch 2/3 games in a row. UH seems to have it all:)

Kazz, #282, I like what I see. The WVB team should have no problems in the WAC. The big question mark, how consistent can Mafua been in the NCAA Tournament. Shoji needs to give Uiato as much playing time as possible during the conference season, just in case.

  293. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 6:27 pm

    Papjoe2,

How quickly some forget how awesome Stephanie Ricketts was in 2009. Then again, no one was really paying attention to Wahine softball that year anyway…

But yeah, a pitcher in women’s fastpitch can take a team a long way.

In 2009, Coach Coolen crafted the schedule, or it was reported that he crafted the schedule based on the return on Olympian Justine Smethurst and the debut of Kelly Majam, then Smethurst opted to stay home in Austrailia at the 11th hour and Majam tore her ACL.

Then BAM, then senior Courtney Baughman, who earned a victory against top ranked Oklahoma early that season injured her shoulder (I think) and now UH was looking at three freshman pitchers in Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu, Sarah Robinson, and Stephanie Ricketts.

Ricketts eventually got the job and was nothing short of IRON-WOMAN. I believe she finished the 2009 season with an ERA of 1.98 and we did finish that season with a winning record and won ALL but one of our WAC series. The hitting in 2009 wasn’t there with the exception of Tanish Milca, Amanda Taualii, and Clare Warwick. We only had TWO batters hitting above .300, but managed a pretty decent season off the back of then true freshman Stephanie Ricketts.

But the reason I mention this is to add to how much one pitcher can do a lot. I think both Parnaby and Ricketts will continue to get better and if used the way Coach Coolen envisions then, we can do some serious damage provided there is not much drop off at the plate.

  294. Steve September 20, 2010 6:27 pm

Kazz, #282, the next 3 games will tell alot. Satele seems to have broken out of whatever was holding her back. Need Waber, and Hartong to play smarter.

  297. Steve September 20, 2010 6:30 pm

Kazz, do you think, Sarah, can become close to what her sister was at the plate, anyway. Also, how good do you think Makani, can be.

    Steve,

That’s one of the things Coolen, Trapasso, and Shoji have in common.

They all have been able to schedule top tier opponents outside of the WAC and to get them to come to Hawaii nonetheless!!!

  299. 808ike September 20, 2010 6:34 pm

  302. Kazz (click to support UH softball) September 20, 2010 6:44 pm

    Steve,

Kate Robinson, by looking at her accolades and watching her for the 2008 season was special. I KICK myself for not being into softball prior to that, especially when the team made noise in 2007. I only caught on when the bracelet issue in 2007 was brought up on this blog.

But I dunno, in the circle, I think Sarah Robinson’s pitching days are through. She only pitched ONE D1 game and that was a partial inning against CAL in 2009 and both she and Makani got hit pretty often.

A lot of how much players will contribute at UH will depend on their bat and we haven’t seen the opportunity to see Sarah Robinson at the plate much. She was an outstanding athlete at Moanalua and off the name alone, I was intrigued to see what she could do. But you can never try to compare one sibling to another, but we all do that, especially in sports.

Robinson played a few times at 3rd and even got some time in at the Women’s World Series. However, when I just think about this upcoming season, with Melissa Gonzalez coming off a great season last year, it would be hard to de-throne her at 3rd. Even if things got shifted and Iwata played 3rd and Gonzalez goes to SS, I do not see room for Robinson right now.

But I’m not a coach and I am not there with these players day in and day out. Anything can happen.

As for Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu, people again would forget how she had a pretty good freshman season in 2009. She won a few WAC hitter of the week honors highlighted with some nice grandslams as well. Good height at 1st at 5’11” and Coach Coolen said she improved her 1st base footwork last season. Looks like she’s nearly a lock for 1st base. She had the sophomore slump last year as Jenna Rodriguez won the DP job, so all eyes will be on her performance at the plate.

    It’s all about THE BATS!!!

  303. RedZone September 20, 2010 6:57 pm

Kate Robinson was a player who could win a game by herself.

I thought Satele played really well on Saturday. BYU put a big block which gave all the UH hitters problems except for Hewitt. Even Kanani hit under her average. Chanteal had a double 10 hits and 14 digs plus 2 blocks.

  304. 808ike September 20, 2010 7:02 pm

    Kazz,

Satele- 1) She hits cross corner pretty good. She needs to work on her line shots.I call her the ” 1-hit wonder ” because she spikes the ball with one speed.

    2) Serving is very good. (B+)

    3) Blocking ? Alot of her blocking stat is assist because of Hewitt.

    4) Passing(digging) is pretty good. She has difficulty in passing serves. (C-)

  305. Steve September 20, 2010 7:02 pm

Kazz, #302, that is why I brought up Sarah, I remember Kate really not doing anything her 1st 2 years at Manoa, then her Junior year, she came out with a bang. It was like, Coolen, where were you keeping this girl, Kate that is. Hoping Sarah does the same thing, it would give Coolen another solid bat, and make Murders Row, that much worse for the opponents.

  306. Steve September 20, 2010 7:04 pm

Kazz, one thing about Satele, she is a really big improvement over last year right side hitter. The comparison is not even close.

d1, just saw your post about Menlo-HSU. What a disappointment on both teams parts. My junior year we went down and played Humbolt. We lost by less than seven and were driving when we ran out of time. THey had a tradition of a post game cake. If they won, they got to eat it, if they lost they would deliver it to the opposing team. Even though we lost they still brought the cake to us THe players took it upon themselves saying we kicked their butts. Unfortuneately their coach yelled at them for giving us the cake. Sometimes it starts with the coaches.

Kazz, I do know one thing, Coolen will have one problem this season. Deciding on who will be his #1 pitcher. From what I seen from Parnaby this summer when she pitched against the USA team, she has really improvement. Could be a #1 pitcher for alot of top D1 teams. Nice problem for Coolen to have, do you not think so.

    Kazz,

Texas State and UTSA are actually Division 1 in all sports other than football, including softball. Their current conference, the Southland Conference, has an auto bid into the NCAA softball championship tournament just like the WAC does. Last season Texas State was the runner-up to McNeese State for the Southland softball title; McNeese State went on to be eliminated in the NCAA tournament Baton Rouge regional by LSU and Texas A&M. Here’s a write-up on the Texas State 2010 softball season:

Still went to all FB and BB games after graduating. Season ticket holder for both sports since UH joined the WAC. Have had season tickets to Baseball, Women’s and Men’s VB at various times.

Glad student activity fee was reinstated. Students that use the fee’s benefits are likely season ticket holders in the future. When I’m at the stadium or the arena I see a ton of my former classmates. We’re the old timers now. Need kids like NCAA to take our place.

All of Satlele’s blocking stats are assists and yes because she is next to Hewitt. As the outside blocker she sets up the block and is really good at doing it which is why more than half of Hewitts blocks are next to Satele.

I don’t know what the University of Denver brings to the WAC. Their enrollment is only 3,200. Denver is an attractive TV market but I doubt if DU will attract viewership. DU is a national power in Hockey and the National Champions in Skiiing. They are also becoming a power in Men’s Lacrosse. They have M & W basketball, M & W swimming, M & W Lacrosse, W Soccer. Thus only 3 current teams particpate in WAC sports. They do not have a baseball or softball field.

we were seated near the 5 yd line at Colorado and if the 4th and goal was to be a “speed option”, Moniz never had a chance as the entire center of the O-line was pushed back 2-3 yards and that cause the fumble. still cannot understand why Rolo called “dives into the middle” when Colorado had it stacked with 8 players – you lose all the time!

the other 3 and goal – on the 3rd try, Bradley ran the wrong route and ended up running into Pilares who did a “curl” just in front of his man – thus, the ball sailed into an open area and no touchdown.

  323. momona September 20, 2010 7:44 pm

#309 – I don’t believe being 3-0 was realistic at all. I believe most people would say being 2-1 would be the ideal scenario with 1-2 being more of a probability (I should have said next best scenario). If you told me BEFORE the season that UH would be 1-2 but played USC and CU competitively, I would take that with all the question marks we had back then.

  324. A-House September 20, 2010 7:48 pm

At Army, we made it a point to seek out USMA Bow Fan and meet his gracious wife, Jeanne.

and CRW who made the long drive from D.C.

At Colorado, we met up with Curt and Meg, CRW, and Warrior Dave who just happened to be in our tour group – he introduced himself first to me and Midori7 about 10 minutes later. Great to meet he and his wife.

also, got to say hi to Jim D and Al Katahara and Mae at West Point and Colorado.

Glad we made the trek as several friends from our annual x-mas party at a mutual friend’s house were also in our group and made new friends with many others who went to NY and Colorado – very difficult to beat a group of UH fans from Hawaii on the road – truly, road warriors.

OK, back to eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the next 9 months!!!!!!1

  325. A-House September 20, 2010 7:52 pm

A final observation: if we believe that UH has good players, then we are still a notch below the “middle or lower” teams within a BCS conference.

While its great to recruit players who have “poly” ties, reaching out to others may be the only road to moving up to the next one or two levels.

and, I am tired of listening to the coaches who say we will run more and substitute more and not do it during games.

  326. A-House September 20, 2010 7:53 pm

OH, yes, cannot forget to mention that Faye Wai was in our group from strat to finish.

  327. HawaiiMongoose September 20, 2010 8:02 pm

    Momona,

I’m not sure about that enrollment figure for the University of Denver; according to Wikipedia they have about 11,600 students.

In addition to the sports you mention Denver also sponsors men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s gymnastics and women’s volleyball, which are all contested in the WAC.

Denver is very strong academically. U.S. News & World Report ranks them as the 86th best “National University” which is higher than any current WAC or MWC member except BYU at 75th (UH is 159th). Also Denver has a $270 million endowment which is higher than any WAC school. These factors will matter to the WAC university presidents, who make conference invitation decisions.

  328. oldie September 20, 2010 8:21 pm

I’m wrong in my #313. We came home between the Vegas and LATech games so there was only one loss attributable to an extended stay.

In 2005 we lost at Vegas after not returning home after playing at USC. In 2007 we beat Vegas after our game at LATech. Don’t know if there were any other 2 game road trips.

  329. Shoko September 20, 2010 8:23 pm

Might I add UD also has an athletic budget of 26 million. They would certainly make a good fit in the WAC.

  330. Kazz September 20, 2010 8:27 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

Thanks for the correction and the link to Bobcat softball.

    WOW, nice resume for 2010!

I LIKE DAT!!! BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe not an exact replacement for Fresno State softball but better than nothing. So yes, if everything falls through we hope to see the Bobcats in Manoa in the 2011 softball season.

  331. Kazz September 20, 2010 8:40 pm

    Steve,

It was already documented that Kaia Parnaby had more playing time/experience than Ricketts did coming into UH and like you mentioned Parnaby kept busy during the summer, as did Iwata.

I THINK I read or heard somewhere that Ricketts played some sort of softball during the summer of 2009 prior to the start of the 2010 season, but not sure and I am pretty sure she didn’t play this summer either.

Both present different looks. With Ricketts you’re gonna get some nice drop balls and she can bring the TUNDA when needed. When Ricketts ain’t forcing 65+ MPH pitches, she’s lights out.

With Parnaby, looked like she was a real “wristy” pitcher. More movement on her pitches than Ricketts at times, but Parnaby didn’t seem to throw much off speed stuff last season. She has a riser in there that she seems to love to go to deep in the count and a lot of batters looked silly last season trying to hit her.

Who has the mental edge? Who’s going to be able to go all 7 or more when needed? Softball isn’t like baseball where a “closer” is needed so endurance, physically, isn’t an issue with either Ricketts or Parnaby.

At times last season, both showed that they can be shaken mentally at times, with Ricketts showing more in her body language with frustration and Parnaby being a little more reserved.

I guess the only concern last season with Parnaby was how she was getting hit quite often late into games. Especially during WAC play. I don’t know if it was pitch selection or what but it seemed that once the other team got their batting rotation around a few times, they figured Parnaby out.

For Ricketts it was consistency I guess for a lack of a better term. In the beginning, Ricketts got the workload off some of the better opponents on the Wahine schedule and Parnaby was getting INSANE ERA figures against lesser opponents. (Parnaby did record a fabulous win against then #13 CAL).

For Ricketts, when called upon she did the job, most noteably against #1 Alabama after the Crimson Tide took the lead in the 6th 4-3. Ricketts came in cold at the top of the 7th and 1-2-3 got Bama out to set up J-Rod’s “CRUSHER”.

Personally, I think we’re gonna be in the same boat with Ricketts and Parnaby next season as the last. I cannot see one of them superceeding the other in such a manner that we’ll have to resort to a black and white #1 and #2 pitcher.

I like the fact that we can go to both equally and in games where you go from a righty to a lefty and they are BOTH capable of K’s, it can provide some problems for other teams.

  335. momona September 20, 2010 8:45 pm

#327 – I stand corrected, 3,200 is the enrollment for the business school. DU is very strong academically, especially their business school. Their fieldhouse is new and impressive.

But in my opinion, I still don’t see how they’re inclusion for membership benefits the WAC and in particular, UH. As far as revenue generating sports, only men’s BB comes into play. Their number one revenue generating program is hockey which the WAC does not play.

While their athletic facilities are a lot more than they were 20 years ago, it is still far from where the WAC schools are today.

  336. Kazz September 20, 2010 8:47 pm

    Nevermind, just voted!!!!!!!

RE: Two years for local softball players.

As I was informed, there is a feeling that it takes local softball players some time to catch up to their mainland counter parts.

It usually has nothing to do with individual skill or athletic ability, but due to the simple fact that local softball players aren’t exposed to as many games as their mainland, more specifically California, counterparts.

In Cali, there are a ton of travel clubs which obviously equates to much for softball being played year around and where one girl in Hawaii can got to bat about 25-40 times in one year, a girl in Cali may be up to bat about 70-90 times.

Players like a Jessica Iwata are rare in that they have been great in their true freshman years and I remember an article where Coach Coolen joked that during the 2010 season, a lot of people came up to him asking him where was he was hiding Iwata.

Also let’s not forget that Iwata was more of a baseball player than a softball player for most of her life and in Kauai there is even less competition to really hone your craft.

Speaking of… some were pretty diligent to already declare that if she continues on this path, by the time Jessica Iwata’s UH playing days are done, she will have been the most successful Hawaii-born softball player to have ever played for the University of Hawaii…

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

From the SUCCESSFUL recruiting venue of 176 H.S. students this past weekend at the Harbor College Fair for UH upper campus I met both the academic advisors from football power house Carson and Banning H.S.

They have personally invited me to tour their campus as I will drop off University of Hawaii 2010 / 2011 catalog books that includes ALL courses that upper and lower campus offer. The 15 football players from Carson and Banning H.S. respectively that filled out cards of interest to UH has been mailed to office and admissions as I HOPE to see them today on the campus tour as that 6’4″ sophomore linebacker I shook hands at the fair will be a MAJOR recruit IF UCLA and USC are not recruiting him already.

I am being “PRO ACTIVE” as BUILDING this relationships with these two wealth of polynesian schools will OPEN many doors for Hawaii both academically and athletically. I will have my U of H aloha shirt and alumni name tag badge on as I know when I step in both these office doors the EXCITEMENT of Hawaii is overwealming to school officials and students who took EVERYTHING I had from my Hawaii table at the Harbor College Fair as I was EMPTY in a hour and half with ONLY my Hawaii letterwinners shirt that I had on !

I also got invited to represent Hawaii at the College and Career Convention in the Month of December at the Los Angeles Convention Center. 13,000 students and their families will be attending through out the greater LA region as they will be bussed to the event from local area high schools, charter schools, and community-based organizations.

I represented Hawaii so well that the coordinator Simon Flores is willing to give me a front row table as he witness personally the ENTHUSIASM that Hawaii brings as he saw first hand how students, parents, athletes are EXCITED to study and play for U of H with swarms of Harbor area students last Saturday willing and wanting to come to the land of aloha !

RECRUITING good folks is the KEY as I am slowly building a pipeline as my visit today to both Carson and Banning H.S. will start the ball rolling as both advisors of their perspective schools wants HAWAII to be part of their College curriculum as I will DELIVER that curriculum this MORNING !

Simply The Best, Better Then All The Rest as that LA athletic STUD is COMING !

#338… greenthumb… Yeah! That’s it! Mahalo! I was gonna say, “… ala the Blair Witch Project”, but the name of that movie excaped me. All I could think of was that it started with a “B”. Phew! Now I can move on with the rest of the week!

It seemed like the show just started… and then it was over. Just seemed to go by real fast. I agree… that girl is definitely I’m-gonna-tune-in-next-week hot! I also agree that the new McGarret is not as cool and smooth as the original.

Just another weird example of a SA poll. Heck, once again the SA polls do not work.

Magnum had local *guest* actors and/or extras involved in almost every episode. Still, it bugs me to no end that with the immense talent pool we have right here in the Tsaiko nation, Bulla is not able to play a cameo role.

Can you imagine a more pure Pidgen English speaking person than Braddah Koakane?

Who needs Hu? We got UHFan808!

Naval Officer & a graduate of that boat drivers school at Annapolis, check, we got the real deal.

Al is the REAL Chinn Ho Kelly. ‘Nuff sed.

Need a rocket scientist to invent stuff to catch bad guys? Professor Garret is here daily with technological gems.

How about an aging Asian Sports reporter that has a nose for news? An informant, if you will. Nah, he would want the leading lady to be his videographer.

DPK could write the screen play and team up with Rich (our man in Hollywood) as the executive producers.

The opening screen shot and full blast audio would have to feature our own UH band. The *50* theme song blaring while the team comes out of the end zone tunnel.

If the cast is sipping Mai Tai’s on the balconey of Schooner’s restaurant, what famous landmark is in the background? That’s right, the AZ Memorial. They flash on it in the opening credits.

Whoa…just woke from the wildest dream of the combo remake of Magnum ‘5-0’ series.

You may now return to your regular program…with NO apologies to CBS ’cause Kazz sez they SUCK anyway. Hehehe!

Have a great Tuesday Tsaiko Village people.. I’m gonna take my meds and go back to bed.

If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

There are so many dating sites out there that you don’t even know where to look but there are a few great ones where its worth to spend your time. online dating like everything else requires time and patience. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I would explore following recent topics and raising the amount of write ups you put up and I guarantee you’d begin seeing some amazing targeted traffic in the near future. 539. lose weight fast October 17, 2010 2:15 pm

… This information is really good and I will say will always be helpful if we try it risk free, So if you can back it up … That will really help us all. And this might bring some good repute to you. The diet of human beings prior to the arrival of agriculture, technology and civilization is known as the Paleolithic Diet , This Stone Age diet, in short, consisted of mainly lean red meat and vegetables. In this type of diet animal meat is consumed in large quantities and 45 to 65% of the energy needed by the body is derived from it. Over and over again, life expectancy studies related to diet, including by the World Health Organization (WHO), have concluded that Americans and Europeans would do better to eat more like third world peoples as the options provided by their additional wealth have most often lead to poor nutritional choices. This is the same basis for the USDA based their popular food pyramid in 1993 ! Researchers at Harvard have only suggested perhaps tweaking the food pyramid by replacing some dairy products and read meat with more fruits, vegetables, and fish while also emphasizing the importance of improving the ratio of “good” to “bad” cholesterol.. Plus, exercise not only makes weight loss much easier, but also lowers blood glucose levels, decreases blood pressure, improved circulation, and increases one’s metabolism. Good regular sleep patterns are also just as important. Diets based on USDA recommendations include DASH, American Diabetic Assoc, Weight Watchers, and Jenny Craig! When children understand how important “real food” is and where the natural ingredients of our food come from, they will increase the general population’s appreciation for preserving our natural environment and limiting toxins and polluting processes in our world. We may even trend back to the time when people stepped outside their homes to interact with family and neighbors in home and community gardens and block-party barbeques… Does anybody even remember how nice those days were?

Isle of Prozid is often called ‘the island of love’ and it hosts one of the most famous and visited nudist beaches in this area. It is to be found directly outside of the cove of Vela Luka. The sea there is crystal clean and the nature intact and fascinating. This beach is of white pebbles and has no facilities whatsoever, only one restaurant about 15 minutes walk from the very beach. The biggest benefit of the beach is that there are no pointed rocks so you can enjoy yourself barefooted.
