Colorado surges past UH, 31-13

BOULDER — For the Warriors, there was disappointment — and self-directed anger — after squandering several opportunities in a 31-13 loss to Colorado.

In each of their first two drives, the Warriors had first-and-goal situations from the 3. Both times they came away with nada.

And when Colorado went to the no-huddle offense in the second half, the gasping Warriors’ defense collapsed.

There was some good that came out of the loss, but not enough to feel good.

  23. Garret September 18, 2010 4:13 am

If UH gets an early lead in the game, Colorado’s crowd could turn against Hawkins and be taken out of the game. If they are busy booing Hawkins, the home-field advantage will be gone.

CU head coach Dan Hawkins had pressure on him before the season even began. The heat was turned up this week, however.

Local talk radio shows, which normally spend 90 percent of their time talking about the Denver Broncos, spent time this week discussing potential replacements for Hawkins. Can Bill McCartney come back? What about Eric Bieniemy? Dave Logan?

Unless there’s a dramatic performance change soon, the fans are ready for a change at the top.

  24. mctruck September 18, 2010 4:13 am

Coach Tedford, after his Cal-Bears got stomped by Neveda, says he would vote for the Wolf-pac to be included in the Pac-12, and believes they would be competitive.

Whatelse can you say when you get run over by a non-AQ school, right?, what a way to save face.

Needles to say….many non-AQ schools seem to be catching up to the big brothers in college fb.

  25. Garret September 18, 2010 4:22 am

Another article from Colorado is far more positive about UH than about Colorado.

This is a crossroads game for the Buffs. The psyche of the team, bowl aspirations and Dan Hawkins’ job security are on the line this afternoon at Folsom Field.

“We know we have to sustain drives and score points because Hawaii’s offense is so dynamic,” McKnight said.

  26. 808ike September 18, 2010 4:23 am

    Go Warriors!!!!! WIN!!!!!! WIN!!!!! WIN!!!!!!

  27. 808ike September 18, 2010 4:29 am

    Esme out.

  29. Garret September 18, 2010 4:40 am

A 3rd Colorado paper points out that UH hasn’t beaten Dan Hawkins…so, UH can have another first today.

Colorado is hosting Hawaii, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, in the home opener at Folsom Field. In five seasons as a head coach in the WAC at Boise State before coming to CU, Hawkins went 37-3 in conference games, including a 5-0 mark against today`s opponent.

Hawaii already has 13 plays of 25 yards or more this season, including four touchdown catches of 30 or more yards by Pilares.

“These guys are a very talented squad,” Hawkins said. “They have some experience back particularly on offense and a group of receivers and a quarterback that have been together for awhile and are very, very potent and know what they`re doing on offense.”

  30. Garret September 18, 2010 4:44 am

If Colorado’s uniforms looks different on TV than what people are used to seeing, this is the reason.

This season`s team is honoring that era by wearing 1990 throwback jerseys in each of the six home games this fall. Players already know they need to make drastic improvement over last week`s performance, but the privilege of wearing the 1990 jerseys adds another level of responsibility for some.

  31. NYUH September 18, 2010 4:47 am

Nevada killed Cal last night 52-31. Cal killed Colorado 52-7 last week. Its going to be an interesting season. Glad we have Nevada at home this year.

  32. chawan_cut September 18, 2010 4:47 am

    Go Warriors!!! See you there!

and my PC is still out of commish, so please visit tombo’s site for last night’s news vids:

    Come on over!

  39. protector September 18, 2010 5:16 am

    Broil ’em baby! Go Warriors!

I hope teams like USC and Virginia Tech can get their acts together so UH and Boise’s stock will rise once again. Otherwise, their efforts are diluted & diminished nationwide & in voters’ eyes.

  40. CoolEthan September 18, 2010 5:19 am

Purrr-fect weather to todays game. Cooler than earlier forcasted. Now only reaching the upper 60’s, to maybe 70 deg. ?

It’s still going to be hot enough for that Ralphie-LocoMoco.

  41. CoolEthan September 18, 2010 5:26 am

This petition for fire Dan Hawkins is getting funnier with each posting.

  42. Lava September 18, 2010 5:29 am

How did Dan Hawkins go from the master guru at Boise to where he is today? I did not see that coming?

  43. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2010 5:33 am

    Lava:

Well, Colorado is in the Big 12, and Hawkins’ offensive coordinator at Boise State is still there.

  44. Lava September 18, 2010 5:38 am

Are you suggesting maybe a lot of Boise’s success under Hawkins might be attributed to Peterson? I thought they were both great, but now I am not so sure.

  45. Stephen Tsai September 18, 2010 5:40 am

I think the competition is different.

And I think Petersen is a really good coach.

  46. CoolEthan September 18, 2010 5:46 am

Yep- CU finally came out of Denial and realized they got the wrong coach that was Fed-Ex’d to them. Plus the baggage of having the son as starter QB scared some top recruits away.

  47. CoolEthan September 18, 2010 5:48 am

and we all know that there is a charge for baggage now. How come Southwest hasn’t entered the Hawaii mkt. yet?

  48. Hawaiianbod September 18, 2010 5:48 am

    g’morning Tsaikos!

Good morning Tsaikos. Go Warriors!!! Go For Broke!!!!!

  55. whitey September 18, 2010 6:05 am

and a happy ho hi to d1.

  56. Garret September 18, 2010 6:12 am

It will be interesting to see if the Big East does better today. If they keep doing what they have been doing they will give the MWC their AQ spot.

The Big East has a 10-7 non-conference record. Removing the FCS cupcakes, that record is 3-7. Three FBS conference wins. West Virginia needed overtime to take out Marshall. Rutgers scraped out a 19-14 win over Florida International. Syracuse unloaded on mighty Akron 29-3. Against teams from AQ conferences, The Big East is 0-5 and has been outscored by an average of 17 points per game.

  57. Garret September 18, 2010 6:12 am

The WAC is also doing *much* better in nonconference play than the Big East. That helps the SOS and computer points this season for UH.

  58. duffer September 18, 2010 6:13 am

Went to vote @ 6:00 am, but I’m a hour early. Thought polls open at 6 or was it pools.

  61. NYUH September 18, 2010 7:04 am

Idaho vs UNLV tonite on ESPNU. Should be interesting to gauge. UNLV has two losses but to Wisconsin and Utah. Idaho has a loss to # 6 Nebraska but put up a fight.

  74. wafan September 18, 2010 7:38 am

Thank you to all the Tsai-kos participating today at the RWSS clean/spruce up!!! If you are using an edged tool be careful when you celebrate another Warrior TD.

The Wahine will be amazed at the tornado that comes through there doing the work that should have been done by the university and state.

    Go Wahine!

    Go Warriors!

  75. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 7:39 am

    Go, Warriors!!!

Shucks… I don’t see today’s game listed on atdhe or channelsurfing. Guess today’s game will be BC and RK only… without the visuals.

  77. mcrtuck September 18, 2010 7:43 am

I have not had a kim chee-burger in ages; wonder how a kim chee-bufo-burger would taste?

  78. grumpy September 18, 2010 7:44 am

Hawaii has a very good little football team, but is no match for a Big 12 team. Even if that team is a Big 12 cellar dweller.

  79. mcrtuck September 18, 2010 7:46 am

I hope UH players and coaches were watching the Neveda/California game last night…..it was inspiring. Com’on Buffalos…da Warriors want some action.

Seriously, McTruck, why you gotta retype your nic?

  93. wafan September 18, 2010 8:00 am

    KK . . .

I wonder how many people want to go fishing in their tank. And all those stuffed animals!

Best was the off-duty officer I saw in the camping section. He was swinging and testing out the flashlights. As he thumped each in his open palm I asked what he was doing. He replied that while he is hiking he wanted something he could swing in case he was attacked — something that would leave a dent in whatever it was he struck.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Saw him later in the day. He showed me what he purchased. Darn thing could bring down a moose.

Hawaii on the road vs. BCS teams: 1 and 0.

    Let’s keep the trend going.

Au’ryte game time today bebe… Hope the boys is hungry today to eat some buffalo and stomp that arse! Already starting off on a good day with my sons basketball team dominating. Shouldv’e had a mercy rule in this game but oh well that’s what happens when you are just on fire. I think the score was 57-6 when the buzzer sounded. My boy had Kobe like numbers 30 pts. 20 rebs. 5 ast. 8 stls. and could’ve continued to destroy but we took him out and let the others dominate as well. Not to toot my own horn, but he surprised the hell out of me with his performance today. It was like Michael Jordan entered his 8yr. old body and let loose! Hope the Warrior Boys can provide the same dominating performance and slaughter them buffaloes all over the field!!!

    pride.

    child?

  117. Pride. September 18, 2010 8:49 am

Pauoa Boy. That reminds me of a game that my daughter had when she was ten years old. It was a team of ten year old girls playing a team of eight and nine year old boys form Pauoa. I believe the Pauoa boys scored about seventy points to my daughter’s team’s ten points. I was so angry at the boy’s coach for allowing the boy’s team’s star to run the score up on the girls.

I relaxed a few years later when that same boy Derrick Low, ran the scores up on boys his own age. Suddenly I didn’t feel so bad.

  118. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 8:50 am

Homegrown, May the sun shine showers of rainbow blessings

    Terrific news Pride.!

    😀

  126. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 9:05 am

    Pride,

We wasn’t trying to run up the score and actually had them sit in the key with there hands up and didn’t allow them to attack. We tried to have our team pass to there teammates and stop shooting the lights out but even our girls and boys kept scoring. At one point in the 4th quarter we had them have to make at least 5 passes before shooting the ball but even then it didn’t slow them down much. Most of the damage my son did was in the first half as he and this other boy sat pretty much half the game. Some of the other kids on the team surprised me too because in practice it’s like ADD, cannot keep still, but in the game they were all focused and did exactly what they were taught. I was proud of all the kids. In fact our smallest girl on the team who’s tiny but very aggresive was the second leading scorer with 8 pts. and about 12 rebs. Derrick Low, remember when I played with his brother Dustin and we would have him run against us at practice, I think he was only maybe around 11-12yrs. old at the time, but good enough to hold his own.

  127. Pride. September 18, 2010 9:05 am

    Thanks D1.

  262. Matt September 18, 2010 10:39 am

Nice, bad snap and huge loss of yards for CU. Punt coming up.

  263. Matt September 18, 2010 10:41 am

  279. buffoman September 18, 2010 10:48 am

Defense playing much better. First half looked good with the exception of a few missed tackles, and leaving that receiver so wide open but overall, much better.

    Moniz is da man.

  280. buffoman September 18, 2010 10:49 am

wondering about that clock. looked like we had one more shot at the end zone before the kick.

  281. Steve September 18, 2010 10:49 am

Score should be 24 – 0, tho, hope those 2 missed scores do not come back the haunt the Warriors.

  284. Lite Tsaik (o) September 18, 2010 10:52 am

Switched to SMU = WSU game at half. Looks like JJ is wearing a Maile lei. At least, I think it’s Maile. Any body know if he always does that?

I wonder if Ralphine will leave the stadium early.

  287. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 10:53 am

    10-0 who wouldathunk?

  288. Da Punchbowl Kid September 18, 2010 10:53 am

Notice a pattern in all three games? Warriors might falter, but they keep on fighting. That’s a key trait for any team that’s going to be successful.

10 – 0 at the half is good.

Too bad the refs and clock person cheated us outta another shot at the end zone.

Waddy guys think of the defense so far?

  292. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 10:56 am

Our Warrior Boys should be pimp slappin these buffa-hoes right now. Defense is playing well enough and getting some turnovers. They can’t stop the offense so come second half just dominate and put these hoes to rest!!!

  293. wafan September 18, 2010 10:57 am

Streaming link on #244 a bit choppy but okay.

  299. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 11:04 am

Another glaring stat that needs to be addressed… especially with our HC’s defensive background… only one sack credited to our defense so far this season! Not getting enough pressure on opposing QB’s.

  300. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 11:05 am

DPK, yes if UH continues clonking Hawkins and CO

we are all winners, but Tom Mui is closest so far…

  429. wafan September 18, 2010 12:11 pm

  431. Steve September 18, 2010 12:11 pm

Defense putting alot of pressure on the offense

  432. Cheyah! September 18, 2010 12:11 pm

I wish the Defense would play Defense! So frustrating!

    C’Mon Warriors!

  433. 808gridiron September 18, 2010 12:11 pm

  434. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 12:12 pm

So I guess I going have a heart attack soon…sheesh…

  435. wafan September 18, 2010 12:12 pm

    Steve . . .

I am not that crazy. I like breathing on my own.

  436. buffoman September 18, 2010 12:12 pm

If CU was that good I’d feel okay about the score, but they aren’t so what does that make us?

This is really bad. How can teams go into the locker room down then come out and just trash us?

    Wow.

  437. Matt September 18, 2010 12:13 pm

Need to score on this drive. How many false starts have we had in this game?

  438. Steve September 18, 2010 12:13 pm

Those 2 non-scoring series at the beginning of the game will cost the Warriors big time!!!

  439. Steve September 18, 2010 12:13 pm

This is going to get ugly very fast now!!!!

  440. 808ike September 18, 2010 12:14 pm

    Wafan,

    Do you have SMELL-A-VISION???

  441. Kekoa (iPhone) September 18, 2010 12:14 pm

Wha hoppen?! I log on expecting to see good news, and instead I’m smelling Buffalo chips! Friggin’ oddsmakers and their 11 pts.!

  442. UHfan808 September 18, 2010 12:14 pm

    Let’s go o-line!!!

  443. wafan September 18, 2010 12:14 pm

Sure wish we had those 21 missed points we missed early on now.

  444. 49erWarrior September 18, 2010 12:14 pm

    Sickening

  445. buffoman September 18, 2010 12:14 pm

So #51 create the penalty then whiffs Beatty.

  446. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:17 pm

Offense can’t be looking for the homerun ball… take the short stuff and get rid of that ball!!!

    C’mon, defense… Need A Stop!!!!!

  447. buffoman September 18, 2010 12:17 pm

Steve, ugly may be putting it mildly.

Don’t know if it was Pauoa asking about heart. don’t see it.

  448. Steve September 18, 2010 12:17 pm

The Warriors still cannot beat a Hawkins coached team, no matter how bad that team is!!!!

  449. wafan September 18, 2010 12:18 pm

    808Ike . . .

    That would be cool!

I think it was somewhere in Asia some movie was shown with scents — they called it 4D. HA!

What a gimmick. Hope it wasn’t a movie like Dirty Jobs. Ewwwwww.

  450. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 12:20 pm

Defense needs HEART, plain and simple!!! They just looked lost and out of sync… The team as a whole just looks fatigued and out of it…

  451. Steve September 18, 2010 12:20 pm

Warriors are going to be hard pressed to make a bowl game again this year.

  452. wafan September 18, 2010 12:21 pm

Warriors need to carry O2 tanks on their backs DURING the game?

I can only imagine how the thinner air is hampering their abilities.

  453. OldDiver September 18, 2010 12:21 pm

If our offense just played average we win.

  454. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:21 pm

Are we just giving up??? WTH is going on? We need a couple of stops…. we need TWO scores!!!

  455. Warrior in GA September 18, 2010 12:21 pm

Will someone please fire McMackin, he is outcoached in the second half on every single game, you could never tell that we dominated the first half…

    Donovan, get rid of him..!!!!!!!!!!!

  456. wafan September 18, 2010 12:22 pm

    Go Warriors!!!

    To the end.

  457. Steve September 18, 2010 12:22 pm

That Nevada game is going to be very, very, scary to go to.

  458. d1島 September 18, 2010 12:22 pm

    DEEEEEFEEEEENSEEEEE!

  459. 808ike September 18, 2010 12:22 pm

    UHfan808,

Will we see you at the next T-gate?

  460. d1島 September 18, 2010 12:23 pm

    That is nawwwts! 🙁

  461. OldDiver September 18, 2010 12:23 pm

Our defense has given the offense ample oppertunity to score. This is on the offense.

  462. Steve September 18, 2010 12:23 pm

    Pomai:

Here is my prediction for the Nevada game.

    Nevada 77 UH 10

  463. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:24 pm

    Was that a volleyball pass???

  464. wafan September 18, 2010 12:24 pm

    Good grief.

  465. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 12:24 pm

Wow who the frikk was praying for Colorado today…

  466. Steve September 18, 2010 12:25 pm

Even Nevada’s 3rd string offense will score on Warriors defense!!!

  467. Warrior in GA September 18, 2010 12:25 pm

Oh yeah, Rolo, yeah… he Moniz gets it!!!! throwing for 400 yards a game with 13 points isnt getting it, Nick!!!!

  468. A-joe September 18, 2010 12:25 pm

    Come on gang!

    Stand together!

    No give up!

  469. Steve September 18, 2010 12:26 pm

Hate to see what Boise St. and Fresno St. will do.

  470. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:26 pm

Congrats to Hawkins and Colorado football team.

Now we get to play against smaller guards and

tackles and make the Sheraton Bowl.

  471. UHfan808 September 18, 2010 12:26 pm

    whatevas

    LET’S GO WARRIORS!!!

    Thanks 808ike, wafan, steve 🙂

  472. wafan September 18, 2010 12:27 pm

    Offeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssse!

  473. buffoman September 18, 2010 12:27 pm

okay, a few blogs ago I asked what would be the responses from the folks if the scores listed were reversed and we were on the short end. 3:12 and 1 timeout, I’d say “stick afork in it” we’re done.

232 yards rushing? can we stop any running game.

    and an interception.

  474. A-joe September 18, 2010 12:27 pm

    Das OK!

    Keep trying!

    No give up!

  475. Matt September 18, 2010 12:27 pm

First pick of the year for Moniz off the hands of Salas.

  476. Steve September 18, 2010 12:27 pm

This season can get very ugly very fast.

  477. J September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

Who wasn’t praying for Hawai‘i today? That one brought back a better memory of the game against Air Force when Robert Lan got lucky.

  478. 702WarriorFan September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

Looks like we’re making Buff look really good…..

    Hawkins still 100% against us.

Was looking forward to beating him before he got fired.

  479. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

Gonna have this sick feeling for a week now… missed opportunites and mistakes… we just didn’t look like we wanted to win this one.

  480. wafan September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

    Darn.

Come on D! Get it back!

  481. 808ike September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

    New QB.

  482. madeinhawaii September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

Ouch.. this second half is really really hard to watch..

  483. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

    UH…you played your hearts out.

    Thank you.

  484. Cheyah! September 18, 2010 12:28 pm

No Heart at all! Put some PLAYERS on the field!

  485. Markazulu September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

Honestly Hawaii’s fault they lost I mean two drives in the opponents 5 an u dont score… what is that. An where was the “potent” offense we had some big plays but seriously our boys need to regroup. Defense played well until they gassed up. Check this stat in last week they gave up 4 unanswered td’s in the 3rd quarter this week is 2 unanswered td’s. They need to really really prevent that.

  486. Matto September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

    They’re so winded, it’s unbelievable.

Just ran outta gas in the 2nd half.

  487. Warrior Clan September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

    The defense is absolutely PATHETIC

  488. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

DISASTER, SICKENING, I swear this is so hard to watch. I need to turn this off already, trying not to get too negative but hard to make out positives on a game where we should have stomped these guys!

  489. Shoko September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

Defense is really sad. I’m done watching. you guys have a good evening or afternoon.

  490. d1島 September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

    Pomai,

    56 – 14 d1shima

  491. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

Ugly game. I still think Colorado is a terrible team. We just made them look really good today. Poor effort, play calling, mistakes, turnovers, penalties… you name it, we did it.

  492. Matto September 18, 2010 12:30 pm

Mark – yeah the 3rd quarters have been deaaaaadly for us in the last 2 games.

  493. koakane ip4 September 18, 2010 12:31 pm

    sick

  494. 702WarriorFan September 18, 2010 12:31 pm

248 yrds rushing for the buffs…. 7 for Warriors 🙁

  495. Chee! September 18, 2010 12:31 pm

    OMG.

  496. grrrrr September 18, 2010 12:31 pm

one or both of these coaches should not be back next season

  497. A-joe September 18, 2010 12:31 pm

Gang, it’s moment like these that our team really needs us the most. We need to stick together and continue to support our team.

    No give up!

    We win together.

We also need to lose together

  498. Steve September 18, 2010 12:32 pm

Next week’s game is getting my worried. Without a defense they could lose that game also.

May not win a game again, the way the defense is playing.

  499. 702WarriorFan September 18, 2010 12:33 pm

Looks like casinos made money on this game.

  500. A-joe September 18, 2010 12:33 pm

    One snap and clear.

    Bring our boys home.

    Work on our mistakes.

Lets get ready for next week.

  501. 702WarriorFan September 18, 2010 12:34 pm

Get home and regroup for the rest of the season…..#499, YES~!

  502. wafan September 18, 2010 12:34 pm

    I always ask my kids,

    “Did you learn anything?”

    “Was it you best effort?”

“What will you do to improve?”

  503. MattyBoy September 18, 2010 12:34 pm

Fire Mcmackin and everybody else! Three games already the defense has shown poor play..That goes for the offense as well..I don’t see us going to a bowl game this year..Get rid of the staff now or else settle for mediocrity!

  504. 808ike September 18, 2010 12:34 pm

    Go Wahines!!!!!!!

  505. d1島 September 18, 2010 12:35 pm

    48-hour Rule.

    See you Monday

  506. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:35 pm

We definitely don’t come out after half time with any emotion. That’s when we allow our opponents to get back into the game. We gotta fix that. We allowed Colorado to march down with a penalty and 3rd down conversion… and they came alive.

  507. Da Punchbowl Kid September 18, 2010 12:35 pm

As hard as it is to see, A-joe is right!

    Win together, lose together!

  508. wafan September 18, 2010 12:36 pm

    Go Warriors!

    Can improve!!!

  509. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:36 pm

Georgia Southern lost to Navy last week 13-7.

  510. wafan September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

    Here they come.

    Tsigh.

  511. Markazulu September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

I love the effort an I’ll always support the Warriors but not scoring in the red zone twice from 5 yards is unacceptable. Honestly I think thats what cost us this game. An stupid penalty’s. Hawaii shot themselves in the foot. An you know what they really need someone to wake them up because they allowed in the past 2 games 38 points in the 3rd quarter alone Half Time Adjustments are key… This game is vital now we will see how are Warriors respond at home are they gonna role over an say this season is over or Take it one game at a time. I wont give up on the team. Bad games happen but this is just unacceptable when u have a chance to beat a Big 12 team that was down an out.

  512. Cheyah! September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

I don’t really post negatively on here but it’s so frustrating when we just got whooped by a weak team. Geez! Still fuming by the lack of effort! Something needs to change or it’s gonna be a loooonnngg season!

  513. buffoman September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

Pauoa boy, I feel your angst. really hard to watch. How can a team on two separate occasion do what we did in the second half of games? Are we so predictable that people just know how to attack? Or are our guys already having snack and drinks and celebrating?

If we play like this, why not go play those body bag games. At least we’ll be paid well to look as bad.

  514. Bulla September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

Were we that bad or are they that good? I didn’t watch the game…….but it sounds U-G-L-Y

  515. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

300 plus yards for Moniz…not bad

  516. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:37 pm

We still got lots of promise… we just gotta address these issues and come out better prepared. Third game, and we still have substitution penalties.

  517. wafan September 18, 2010 12:38 pm

    Have fun tonight!

  518. vballfan1 September 18, 2010 12:38 pm

    Need new coaches. Aloha!

  519. A-joe September 18, 2010 12:39 pm

MattyBoy- Can’t fire Mac. UH doesn’t have the funds to buy out his remaining contract.

But, I am interested in your solution. If UH had the funds who would you bring in as the new coach and who would be his staff?

  520. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:41 pm

    Rolo will roll.

    Mac will attack.

    Aranda will bring da thunder.

  521. wafan September 18, 2010 12:41 pm

Hey, did the UC fans who wanted Hawkins fired come here?

  522. whoa September 18, 2010 12:41 pm

The coaching staff passed up an opportunity to spend 7 days adjusting to the 5,300′ altitude. I don’t care what info that ST posted about diminishing returns and the reason they chose to start the week in LV. I spent 4 years as an athlete in college going from sea level at home to Denver’s 5,280 foot altitude and 7 days in CO would have made a difference. But hey, Mack has never impressed me with his intellectual capabilities so that decision was no big surprise.

  523. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:42 pm

Please don’t say Dan Hawkins or John L. Smith!

  524. Bulla September 18, 2010 12:42 pm

    DPK

I agree, and they better get used to sharing the fame and the blame, win or lose… Just sad for the boys….. Cut down the 400+ page playbill to 4 pages and see if our Defense can adjust……

  525. 808Fan September 18, 2010 12:42 pm

“This is a big game for both schools.

    Hawaii can make a statement…”

I think Hawaii made a bigger statement than Colorado did.

  526. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:42 pm

But who will be mayor and guv?

  527. Matto September 18, 2010 12:43 pm

WAFAN – “Here they come. Tsigh.” Funny.

Clearly everyone was gassed. Combo of being on the road for so long, so far and in Colordo, so high. The power and speed in the 1st half was just not there in the 2nd half.

What’s disturbing is our inability to stop the run in any environment. I guess the positive is that we shut down the outside. But it opened up lanes in the middle. And we didn’t address that at the half – so they kept doing it.

  528. Garret September 18, 2010 12:44 pm

Were we that bad or are they that good? I didn’t watch the game…….but it sounds U-G-L-Y

    Bulla,

Colorado is a really, really *bad* team. In the first quarter they really seemed to try to give UH the game. Unfortunately, UH didn’t put the game away then…TDs would have taken the spirit out of Colorado’s players and turned the fans against them.

  529. grrrrr September 18, 2010 12:45 pm

UNR beat Cal so badly that even the Warriors felt it.

  530. Garret September 18, 2010 12:46 pm

The three big problems UH had last season were being outscored in the 3rd quarter, red zone offense, and run defense. Those problems cost UH today.

  531. Bulla September 18, 2010 12:47 pm

    Garret

Mahalo bro, that is sad, very sad.

    GO Warriors

    GO CATS x2

  532. Garret September 18, 2010 12:47 pm

The important thing to remember is that UH pulled out the win against Army and before the season began very few people would have expected UH to sweep the road trip. UH can beat Charleston Southern next week and gain some confidence for WAC play.

  533. wafan September 18, 2010 12:47 pm

    Gosh.

Next week! Cannot wait for Saturday to get here!!!

  534. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 12:49 pm

    This game is

    sorta like the movie,

    “Gone With The Wind”…

    “Frankly Scarlet, I don’t give a damn…”

    Go Warriors!

  535. Garret September 18, 2010 12:50 pm

Now is NOT the time to give up on the team. They can get to 2-2 next week and the WAC has a lot of teams that UH is better than. So, the Hawaii Bowl is not a stretch to think about. Even for those who say that BSU, Fresno State, and Nevada are too tough (remember, Nevada doesn’t seem to win at Aloha Stadium), UH could lose all of those AND one more game and still make the Hawaii Bowl.

The sky is not falling. The problems that existed last year still exist, but someday they hopefully will be solved.

  536. RedZone September 18, 2010 12:50 pm

Still no run defense and I can’t see it getting better without personnel changes. Sad.

  537. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:51 pm

Another thing I noticed… We make the first hit within a couple of yards of the line of scrimmage, and then give up another four or more yards while trying to strip the ball. Just drop those ball carriers and force them to punt. We keep giving up huge yards per carry, they start believing they can run on us, and they become more determined to get those extra yards.

  538. RedZone September 18, 2010 12:53 pm

I cringe when I see UH wasting so many timeouts on defense.

  539. Da Punchbowl Kid September 18, 2010 12:53 pm

    A-joe –

Hows da Trojans from down south doing? Last I heard they had beaten Konawaena.

  540. Markazulu September 18, 2010 12:53 pm

300 plus yards passing is good. But I’d take a 100 yard passing game with 5 td’s over a 500 yard passing an 1 td’s preformance I mean I think yardage is good but yards dont win u the game it’s all about points. Hawaii beat themselves on the 1st two drives not punching it in the endzone. It’s not a shocker that Colorado was able to score in the 2nd half but it’s just a shocker the offense didnt even go over 20 points.

  541. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:54 pm

I don’t think anyone’s given up on UH… but we, as fans, can complain and hope these recurring issues will finally get addressed. Everything is not all happy happy joy joy at the moment.

  542. Garret September 18, 2010 12:54 pm

    Bulla,

Last week, Cal 52 Colorado 7

This week, Nevada 52 Cal 31

But the crazy thing is that I think UH can beat Nevada at Aloha Stadium because they seem to fall apart in Hawaii.

  543. grrrrr September 18, 2010 12:55 pm

The sky may not be falling, but the earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos and wildfires are starting to add up

  544. Garret September 18, 2010 12:56 pm

    Michigan Warrior,

I don’t think you are giving up on the team. Others on other forums are much more brutal than anything posted on this blog.

You definitely have the right to complain. You are a fan that wants the best for the team. This year may be the pivotal year in UH’s entire athletic future, not just for the football team but for ALL sports…everyone should be concerned.

  545. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 12:57 pm

I don’t recall a single shovel pass or draw in this game… did I miss one while on a bathroom break?

  546. Markazulu September 18, 2010 12:57 pm

I like the play of John Hardy though an Aaron Brown. Our Receivers did a alrite job I just think we need to establish a run game I mean what happened to the team that rushed for 100 on USC they Really Really need to keep the other team on there heels.

  547. Derek September 18, 2010 12:57 pm

What is most disappointing is that the Hawaii defense, especially the run defense is very bad. At the point of attack, the Hawaii DL is being blown off the ball and the running back also drags the lineman/linebackers another 3 or 4 yards more. If we can’t the run, we won’t win many football games. I’ve already seen only 3 games and I can already tell that we won’t win 7 games to make it to a bowl game. Maybe with luck 6. Winnable games are against Charleston Southern, La Tech, San Jose, New Mexico St., and UNLV. They will not win at Boise, at Fresno, at Utah St., Nevada, and Idaho. All of those teams have better defenses than ours. At halftime against Colorado, the score should have been at least 24 to 0. Let them hang around in their own field and that spells trouble for us. Which exactly what happenened in the 2nd half.

  548. Matto September 18, 2010 12:58 pm

Garret, well said. I still believe if the offense can play for a full 60 and our D can tighten up, this team will rock it.

You’ve got to credit CU’s BIG men.

    Over 300 pounds and 6 foot 9 and 6 foot 8.

Ever try to push guys like that around?

I remember my Judo coach who was about

    300 pounds and I weighed only 120—and

I could not move him an inch—even with leverage.

He would just fall on me and crush me…

  553. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 1:05 pm

If we can fix the broken stuff, we can win out. We have to come out better in the second half.

We’ve shown we can do stuff against USC and Colorado. We just didn’t maintain it, and we let things get out of control. We showed some moxie in coming from behind against Army. We need to put it all together.

We are still making stupid penalties… especially substitution and false starts.

We gotta play complete start-to-finish games with full on intensity. Our livelihood is at stake!

One more thing… Salas had several drops today. Wonder why? He used to be clutch.

  554. vballfan1 September 18, 2010 1:05 pm

Same problems as last season haunting this team 🙁 To me this means there is a coaching problem or lack of coaching period.

  555. BleedGreen808 September 18, 2010 1:07 pm

What frustrates me most is that the HC is a defensive guy and his defense is under performing. I know the DC is Arranda but when the HC is a D type of guy, you would think his D would somewhat come close to being good. At this point, UH can’t stop the run if the game was on the line. Maybe the HC should concentrate on getting his D to perform at level that is expected of them.

I hate to say this and am trying to remain positive, but if the D can’t get their act together in stopping the run, it will be a long season. I would be happy of just making the bowl game at this point.

  556. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 1:12 pm

Like I said earlier, we’d meet the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage, and sometimes in back of the line, and then try so hard to strip the ball, that we allow the ball carrier to gain an extra 4+ yards after being hit. We need to just stop ’em dead in their tracks and just force them to punt. Every time we allow the extra yards, we give more confidence to both the RB’s and the opposing O-line, then they start blowing us off of the line.

  557. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 1:15 pm

True, BleedGreen808… most teams seem to reflect their HC’s personality/background. We haven’t seen that since Coach Mack has taken over. Games usually swing by defensive plays/stops. We know our offense can do what it needs to do when they’re clicking. We just need our defense to wake up and start clicking too.

  558. Ipu Man September 18, 2010 1:16 pm

I think UH needs to eat raw oysters at half time…

  559. UHfan808 September 18, 2010 1:20 pm

During the game is the appropriate time to post which good things/actions we UH fans want to see happening on the field, not what we don’t want to see.

It’s a psychological thing to send them our collective mana and provide constructive criticism. 😉

To me, positivivity and positive constructive criticism does not mean boasting about the predicted outcome (=bachi) or sugar-coating (=B.S.), but instead, is honestly stating what you want to see the team be able to do at a chosen game, period, or time frame, or work on this time and/or next time.

    😉

For those who saw the game, did Mo really look as bad as they made it sound? Did it seem that he was out of sync? What happened to the supposed changes made in the offensive set?…I guess we all are shaking our heads over this one.

Do I really want to see a replay of this game? Nah! Enuff blame to go around. I just want to see some improvements made, overall.

    Come home Warriors and heal.

After watching the horrible performance of the UH football team today in Colorado – where we failed to convert on 2 goal line opportunities to score and then came out again in the 2nd half like our wheels fell off and nothing worked, it’s starting to look like it’s going to be a long season – very much like the last 2 years under the McMackin regime.

I just can’t see paying $1M/yr. to any head coach (which we all know that UH jumped the gun in paying this much to Coach Mac in the 1st place) that has difficulty in producing reasonable winning seasons! It’s the 3rd year now and it gets frustrating when all we get are excuses… and losses that could have been wins instead!!! Don’t get me wrong….Coach Mac is a great defensive coordinator (and he’s proven that in the past), but not a $1M head coach!

Sad to say after watching games like today that I can no longer get really excited about the rest of the games in this year’s football season – as watching the consistent lack of discipline and execution throughout the defense, special teams, and now the offense becomes more and more frustrating, but just hope we get to the Hawaii Bowl with at least 7 victories! We’ve got an uphill climb with other WAC teams like Nevada, Boise St., Fresno St., etc. doing well against other teams. It will be tough to keep up when we can’t even play consistently over 4 quarters!

Well….something that keeps me excited are the great recruits that Coach Arnold recruited for the UH basketball team! He did a fantastic job in such a short time! After several frustrating years watching the games at the Stan Sheriff (and the only great thing was the beer price actually going down!), I’m excited to see this new UH basketball team in the upcoming season!!!

Hopefully Coach Mac and his coaching staff can provide the discipline and leadership that will prevent 2nd half collapses like we saw at Army and Colorado! Perhaps someone can give Coach Mac a better halftime script to inspire his Warriors – cuz whatever he’s telling them now sure is not working!!!

  572. papajoe2 September 18, 2010 2:16 pm

Just got home from PPV game and voting and catching up on the blog. I’m very disappointed in the game today. Does everybody know that dating back to last season, we lost every 3rd quarter except when we played that DII team last year. That’s 14 out of 15 games we lost the 3rd quarter. In any sport, breaks like halftime, are used to analyze and correct/make adjustments that happened in the first half and relay that to the team in the locker room or wherever. I’m sorry on being negative, as I coach positively and have been very successful doing it, but 14 out of 15 games? Isn’t something wrong with this picture? You figure out who is to blame and I’ll leave it at that. By the way, in the last 15 games we played, very few were power house teams.

#567 Continue: Good afternoon Tsaiko Nation !

Had an AWESOME day recruiting for Hawaii upper campus as

177 interest cards were GONE in less then TWO hours as my

entire table had NOTHING remaining only the school catalogue

of classes and the Hawaii shirt on my back was all I had left !

Mrs. Rainbow Cliff was a HUGE help as she kept all cards in order and

had every student fiil out pertinent information as parents found the cost

of a Hawaii education a GREAT value compare to USC and UCLA in which

their reps could not BELIEVE Hawaii had all the students for this recruiting fair

as they had to WAIT for seconds with so much DISSAPOINTMENT to their faces !

One FANTASTIC moment I had was meeting Banning High School and Carson High School Varsity Football players as they came over to the Hawaii table as MANY had relatives and

student friends that attend UH, BYU Hawaii or Chaminade University.

BIG fast studs as I definetly gave out interest cards to some HUGE offensive line men

and defensive tacklers as I just played the ALUMNI role with out NO indication of my athletic background to UH as 15 of them filled out cards with a Linebacker that I could not believe he was a sophomore at 6’4″ and a solid 250 as his handshake covered my entire hand !

High interest to Hawaii in the Harbor area as Gardena, San Pedro, Carson, Banning and Narbonne High Schools are LOADED with students who LOVES Hawaii as I will be back next

year as I found the MECCA of recruting H.S. freshmen for upper and lower campus LEGALLY !

Sorry for the TOUGH lost BUT I do believe IF I am able to get Hawaii out in the open here in Los Angeles and have the forum so that parents and students can FEEL the OHANA and see what a GREAT University Hawaii is then the academic and athletic TALENT is coming as I really saw today the power of “ALOHA PARADISE” as I was sold out of information to UH in less then 2 hours !

    AWESOME just plain AWESOME !

Taking Mrs. Rainbow Cliff out for a well deserve dinner as we TURNED the College Fair out as when I left Nevada Reno who was across from me applauded my exit as FINALLY some students can see a defecto University in the desert can FINALLY get some attention !

  575. papajoe2 September 18, 2010 2:33 pm

During the “old days,” the Dline players like the Noga brothers, Levi Stanley, Cliff Laboy, Colin Scott, etc, would be very low to the ground, their knees almost touching the ground. They would penetrate to disrupt the flow of the offense or even sack the QB or tackle the QB or RB before the handoff or right after the handoff. Did football change that much in the last 25/30 years? It seems like our Dline is standing up too quickly to see where the ball is (someone mentioned dancing with the Oline), then reacting. By then either they will be a little too late thus, tackling the running back from behind or the running back has enough time to see where the holes are and exploiting them. Once the RB picks up momentum/speed, it is harder to tackle the RB, thus allowing missed tackles or broken tackles. Granted the Dline of UH of “old” didn’t play too many marquee teams, they most of the time, were out weighed by their opponents by a lot.

  576. Markazulu September 18, 2010 2:37 pm

In all honesty I think Hawaii beat themselves with the fact they didnt score in the red zone in the 1st 2 drives. The Mo No pun intended shifted with there Goal line stand an the fact we came up empty two times inside the 5 is just unacceptable. Rolo is still learning his craft as Offensive coordinator. But man there D played outstanding in the 1st half the only difference is this Hawaii team hasnt figured out how to play all 4 quarters they either play 1 quarter good 2 quarters good or maybe even 3 quarters good They need to play Great for all 4 quarters 60 minutes.

    Go Warriors… I’m still hopeful

  577. papajoe2 September 18, 2010 2:37 pm

#576, Good job Mr. and Mrs. RainbowCliff. I always said that UH is one of the best bargain University in the USA.

Denver Post article about the game.

CU’s dormant running game came alive with Stewart and Brian Lockridge each gaining more than 100 yards. It was CU’s first double-century rushing game in eight seasons since Chris Brown and Bobby Purify ran over Iowa State.

It might have been a different ending if the Warriors hadn’t left 14 points on the field on their first two possessions.

  580. papajoe2 September 18, 2010 2:59 pm

I thought Alex Green’s first run to the goal line was a touch down. This was the first play after Kealoha Pilares’ long catch and run. All the ball needs to do is touch the white goal line to be a touchdown. I thought the replays showed on his intitial burst, he got that, but he failed on his second and third effort on that same play. Also the play clock management by Colorado was off at then end of the first half, robbing Hawaii of another play. Even when Moniz threw it out of bounds, the clock ran for 3 or 4 seconds. During the 3rd play of the first touchdown attempt, we were yelling bootleg, or end run as it was obvious our Oline couldn’t move Colorado’s Dline.

  581. Garret September 18, 2010 3:05 pm

Colorado’s website has the quotes from Hawkins, Mack, and the players from both teams.

    This is from Moniz:

ON LEAVING SO MANY POINTS ON THE BOARD- “It definitely was an issue. Two times, within five yards of the goal line, they stopped us, and that really hurt us. We put points on the board one of those times; it would have been a whole different ball game.”

    This is from Paipai:

ON CU’S NO HUDDLE OFFENSE- “It wasn’t too bad. I think we just had issues getting lined up and getting the plays from the sideline. It wasn’t that big of a deal for us.”

  582. papajoe2 September 18, 2010 3:06 pm

Sorry for the negative posts, but I, like most of you, am very frustrated by today’s game. Bulla, or anyone else, if you watch the game on replay or DVD, you will see for yourself that Colorado just isn’t a very good football team. We had many chances but I guess they are a better football team than we are since we lost by a bunch. 400+(?) yards and only 13 points. We must be the nation’s worst rushing team and worst rush defense team. I am venting because I DO care and must let off some steam.

  583. Matt September 18, 2010 3:09 pm

    Kekoa,

Mo did seem a little bit off, but he really wasn’t that bad. He still completed around 65% of his passes with 1 TD and 1 INT. He did miss some open receivers, but there were a couple of drops by the receivers and RBs too. Mo’s first INT of the season came off of a ball that ricocheted off the hands of Salas. There was another pass that was nearly intercepted and a couple others forced into coverage. We were pretty one dimensional, with only 7 yards rushing. O-line had some issues with false starts and the Center-QB exchange. On the offensive side, we just left too many chances on the field. We were within the 5 twice and came away with 0 points. Had we scored two TDs on those drives, this would have been a much different game. On the positive side Salas had 9 catches for around 100 yards and made some great blocks. Pilares also scored a TD in his 3rd straight game for his 5th of the season.

On defense, we had problems stopping the run and getting pressure on the QB. The CU O-line dominated the line of scrimmage. The announcers on FCS said that the CU O-line was supposed to be the best in the Big 12 and had a few NFL prospects. On the plus side, I thought true freshman John Hardy-Tuliau did a pretty good job in his first game on defense. I remember at least one tackle for loss and one pass breakup for the freshman. Box score lists 7 tackles and a forced fumble as well.

On ST, Enos missed a chip shot FG for his first miss of the season. Still he is 6/7 on the season after making two other FGs in the game. True Freshman Sampson brought a couple of kickoff returns out of the end zone when he probably should have taken a knee. Dunnachie had a decent game. He pinned CU deep in their territory one time and had a 61 yard punt.

We came out flat after halftime again. We were also 3 of 11 on 3rd down. I think the reason a lot of people are frustrated is that these are the same problems that we had last season. We just need to regroup and get ready for Charleston Southern and the WAC season. This team is better than they showed today.

  584. Garret September 18, 2010 3:12 pm

    This is from Mack:

“I give Colorado great credit. I think Coach Hawkins did a great job and made some fantastic adjustments at half time. He had his guys ready to play in the second half. As much as I feel we dominated in the first half, we didn’t take our opportunities.”

  585. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 3:16 pm

I don’t think any of us will give up on the team. It is just sick to watch the same effort and mistakes chronically happening from game to game. First half – team plays decent football, Second Half – teams plays like it can’t wait for the game to just end. We already know our DLine is weak and we cannot stop the run for crap. No penetration at all, linebackers not shooting gaps quick enough. I mean I’m watching how the opponents oline just clears huge gaping holes for anyone to run through. Time and again I see the oline getting to the second level before the linebackers can do anything. Its like they sit back and react instead of read and attack! I did however like the effort from John Hardy-Tuliau and think he should see more PT. I also like Aaron Brown in there at LB as well as Siaki Cravens too. Id rather put Siaki at OLB as he has the size and speed to be effective as a LB rather than at DE. What’s really annoying to watch is these frikkin shoe string tackles. I think I saw at least four or five shoe string tackles that could have allowed huge gains or actual touchdowns. Our boys need to learn to hit and wrap up, tackle, tackle, tackle…please!

Had a good workday at the stadium. Just some painting left for Kyle’s stadium maintenance crew. Everyone was jamming. Players, coaches, Coolen’s family, Tsaikos. Whew!

  588. Garret September 18, 2010 3:25 pm

    A few final thoughts:

    1. UH cannot get any more penalties because of having 12 men on the field. That is happening far more than it is supposed to.

    2. One of the biggest problems about the way that UH lost this game is that it will hurt the attendance for the Charleston Southern game. That is bad for UHAD’s bank account and for the environment at the game. If UH had won, or even lost a close game, I’m guessing more people would have come out. PPV sales will also be lower, costing UH money.

    3. The D is often disorganized until right before (or even after) the ball is snapped. Even the defensive players (like Paipai) are talking about it, and talking about how the calls for the defense are coming in really late from the sideline. We cannot blame the players if the coaches don’t signal in the play until it is too late.

    4. Mack is correct to praise Colorado’s halftime adjustments. Has any opponent praised UH’s halftime adjustments this year or last year?

    5. Red zone offense success in the first quarter would have completely changed the game.

  589. Pauoa Boy September 18, 2010 3:25 pm

That Paipai quote says it all, our defense isn’t ready in time to get set. Its like they’re lost waiting for the playcall and personnell subbing in and out. Alignments off, defense out of sync, doing more reacting instead of attacking. Is it Coach Aranda, the players??? Isn’t the MLB the one making the defensive calls on the field??? Honestly as organized as everyone says Coach Aranda really is, his defensive unit seems very unorganized and distraught when they take the field. Is it too much overload of defensive schemes confusing the boys or what??? I’m trying to figure it out but don’t know where to begin the adjustments at.

Did anyone noticed that today’s game on PPV wasn’t in HD and wasn’t clear at all. This was true especially from the far view camera which was shown most of the time. Maybe the director in the truck needs glasses or the camera man needs to have someone else adjust his camera. We are paying big bucks for this poor quality showing and have to bear with commercials too. I thought our pay on PPV covered expenses. Maybe they should either lower the prices on PPV or give UH a much bigger pay check. Watching PPV boxing or other sports, we don’t have to deal with commercials at all since we are paying for it.

    Thanks again for the recap.

  605. NYUH September 18, 2010 4:13 pm

UH needs to run the option on the goal line – stretch it out a little. It looked like they were going to pitch it out to Green but you got to execute the C-QB exchange.

Otherwise, lots of good football coming up this season. Looks like we found some new talent with Siaki and T-H.

  606. buffoman September 18, 2010 4:18 pm

everyone wants to be rah-rah go team go fans, but when one sees the same mistakes over and over and expect something different in a result (a definition of insanity) it’s really hard.

I see folks talking about qualifying for the Hawaii Bowl by loosing to BSU, FSU, USU and Nevada and winning the rest. Somehow that does not make me excited. If the expectation is that we are at the same level as those we mention as we’ll probably loose to, what does it say about the quality, and we have a $1 M coach. Shouldn’t the expectation be greater than to accept being less than average?

I love this team, went to the school, saw greatness even in losses (like to Nebraska), but in those contests, we did not seem to beat ourselves as often as we’re doing.

I think we’ve got very good ingredients. JUst am not sold on the fact that the cooks (coaches) have truly baked us a cake.

Besides our own performance (Barely winning at Army after blowing a 21-0 lead & getting outscored 31-3 in the 2nd half today), whats also embarrassing is the play of Boise beating VT on the road, Fresno beating Cincinatti, Nevada WHOOPING Cal and Boise putting on a dominant performance AS WE SPEAK at Wyoming… I guess those schools are making a VALID argument why they’re leaving the WAC and we’re not…

  608. USMA BOW FAN September 18, 2010 4:20 pm

If the defense was going to have a let-down, this game would have been it. They were on the field for a LONG time against Army. This was the end of a difficult trip. They played in altitude. Don’t want to make excuses, but they had quite a few things going against them.

  609. NYUH September 18, 2010 4:23 pm

TV production value was really bad on the FCS channel. Democrats need an economic stimulus package to make sure every college sports game is in HD. That will get them some votes. Oh wait, the F stands for Fox.

    ST

Why are the Warriors having so many problems stopping the run, and tackling???

  616. Steve September 18, 2010 4:41 pm

Just watching UNLV and Idaho, the Warriors if they do not watch out might not win another game this season. Idaho looks pretty decent also.

  617. gigi-hawaii September 18, 2010 4:43 pm

So sad we lost. Should we change the QB?

  618. Steve September 18, 2010 4:44 pm

    gigi-hawaii:

#619 Not the QB’s fault, defense just does not know how to tackle, or shed their blockers to even make a tackle.

  619. wafan September 18, 2010 4:47 pm

We need Glanville for the D.

  620. wafan September 18, 2010 4:48 pm

  627. InLV September 18, 2010 4:52 pm

Steve ain’t blaming Moniz, he’s blaming Dani Mafua for the loss.

How lame is it that good-ol Steve-o gets banned from the VB blog.

  628. buffoman September 18, 2010 4:54 pm

If you recall, the special team gave Moniz tough starts in the 3rd qtr. On the kick off the holding pushed the team back 1/2 distance to the goal. Terrible starting position. Happened again on the next kick off. Could Moniz have done better, maybe, but at that point momentum was already firmly at CU’s side.

Moniz is still the best at the control. #51 has to do a better job blocking and stop rocking back. He’s had a bunch of false starts in the first three games.

  629. Steve September 18, 2010 4:56 pm

InLv, for your info, I did not get banned from VB blog. But I can tell you a little secret, CL will not be with SA to much longer, like the end of this month only.

  631. Justin September 18, 2010 5:00 pm

Inexcusable loss. Same mistakes year after year with Mack. Red-zone issues, poor run d, penalties, overall confusion. If nothing changes, don’t expect progress.

  632. gigi-hawaii September 18, 2010 5:04 pm

My husband still predicts a 9-4 season. Two losses, two more to go!!!

  633. al September 18, 2010 5:04 pm

    ouch. ouch. ouch.

can’t let a big12 team have that many chances.

failure to punch it in, first and goal from the four really gave them new wind. whereas, it could have buried them.

i thought our best run blocker was pepa, why didn’t we go his way?

eight plays and none able to punch in. not good.

i say, try the wildcat with david graves as the trigger. it will work.

oline got to dig in and create a push. got to remember its not pass blocking inside the five.

  634. al September 18, 2010 5:05 pm

  640. Pride. September 18, 2010 5:23 pm

For those asking for Glanville to come back?

Look at the Warrior’s national ranking in two defensive categories, Total Defense and Defensive Scoring. Also listed is the D.C for those respective years. Not sure if Glanville’s big bag is the solution.

    Year/Total Defense/Scoring(Defensive Coordinator)

    2005 102 / 110 (Glanville)

    2006 93 / 69 (Glanville)

    2007 34 / 46 (McMackin)

    2008 61 / 83 (Cal Lee)

    2009 93 / 90 (Cal Lee)

  641. Michigan Warrior September 18, 2010 5:25 pm

And like Paipai said… they had more issues with getting lined up and getting the plays in from the sideline. Perhaps we gotta simplify our defense a bit. We’re supposed to confuse the enemy, not ourselves!

Papajoe2 brings up a good point. We used to be able to get lower than the opponent’s line on offense and defense, when we needed to. Seems like we don’t do that anymore, so we have no leverage for any push at all.

And I still do believe… if we fix these things and play solid (like we’ve shown we’re capable of) for the whole game… I still believe we can win out. Thing is… can we fix these things and play 60 solid minutes week in and week out?

C’mon, Warriors! I know we can do it!

  642. Steve September 18, 2010 5:26 pm

mmmm Maybe Mac should coach the Defense by himself.

RainbowCliff, you better start teaching him the words to this song:

    Fight on for ol’ SC,

Our men fight on to victory.

    Our Alma Mater dear

    Looks up to you,

    Fight on and win

    For ol’ SC

    Fight on to victory

    Fight on!

    Nah, nah, just kidding.

  645. Old School Dave September 18, 2010 5:38 pm

Lot of frustrated Warrior fans right now. To lose to a bottom feeder Big-12 team can’t be good for the program. UH NEEDS TO WIN OOC games on the continent!! Says a lot about where UH stands right now based on coaching, talent, schemes, preparation, etc. Still lots of football to be played, but this was a major lost opportunity to move the program in a positive direction. I wonder how much of a factor the current trend of NFL style practices of not tackling and the lack of live contact in practice has always affected UH in a negative way. Hawaii which has always been a finesse team since 1999, got outmuscled by a very bad Big-12 team.

  646. Old School Dave September 18, 2010 5:41 pm

BTW, Dick Tomey and Bob Wagner teams used to win with some regularity in the old WAC at Laramie, WYO – elevation 7200 ft about sea level.

  647. RedZone September 18, 2010 5:42 pm

Center snaps ball and stands in 2 point stance and doesn’t move. Of course they are not going to drive the ball into the endzpne. UH oline spends so much time pass blocking they can’t seem to go foward when they need to.

I like what Paipai said. I have always thought that UH takes too much time getting themselves ready between snaps.

  648. RedZone September 18, 2010 5:45 pm

If you want a really good DC we saw him last week. He was also the DC for Tomey and Wagner. Ellerson’s Army team blanked North Texas today and we saw what he could do with Army’s defense against us.

Gigi. Watching the game on replay now. What I like is a comment made by the announcers about Moniz. He is able to read the defense and adjust. That is the essence of the run and shoot. When all the offensive players are on the same page at the same time, we will see what we saw with Colt and the dreds. Poetry in football.

It’s a state of mind and takes a lot of “love” to achieve it.

  662. 702WarriorFan September 18, 2010 6:26 pm

Any word on injuries, if any?

Saw couple of players leaving the field and some returned.

Hope we able to recover physically – hope we can ‘snap & clear’

    within the 48hrs rule.

  663. RainbowCliff September 18, 2010 6:27 pm

#646 Pride: FUNNY statement BUT sooooo very true !

Some how upper campus and lower campus has to FIND ways

to work togther when I do these recruiting fairs for UH !

IF solid athletes are filling out these interest cards and there is

NO indication on the card that they are H.S. varsity players with

all city and state credentials then it really defeats the purpose as

the cards get LOST among the qualifying students when in reality

they should be turned over to the football office and it’s coaches.

I really make a point to not have ANY NCAA violation being fingered

at me as the rules are pretty clear of having NO contact with perspective

student athletes BUT UH admission office and athletic coaches really need

to work together as ALL day today a potential girl softball and volleyball player

came to me directly and express a desireto play for UH as their interest alone

will open doors for Hawaii to a PLETHEORA of talented athletes in the Harbor area

alone as I am AMAZE of the athletic talent here in Los Angeles and I mean

    FRESHMEN talent !

All I can do is REPRESENT and keep my keen eye open as those 15 football

players who filled interest cards were some HUGH young man as that sophomore

line backer literally BLEW me away with his physical prescence as ONE day I am

going to get one to Hawaii and then the LA Hawaii Pipeline will be ON !

    IMUA WARRIORS !

Most camps say that defense wins championships. There is a very, very, small camp that says that offensive lines win championships.

In the last three games dating to Hawaii’s last game in 2009. Hawaii has played against what most eperts would say are eleven sure NFL draft picks from opposing offensive lines.

    Wisconsin:

    Gabe Carimi 6-8 320 (Rd. 1 – 2011)

    John Moffit 6-5 320 (Rd. 2/3 – 2011)

    Josh Oglesby 6-7 331 (Rd. 3/4 – 2012)

    Kevin Zeiteler 6-4 312 (Rd. 6/7 – 2012)

    USC:

    Kristofer O’Dowd 6-5 298 (Rd. 1 – 2011)

    Butch Lewis 6-5 288 (Rd. 6 – 2011)

    Matt Kalil 6-7 295 (Rd. 1 – 2012)

    Tyron Smith 6-6 285 (Rd. 2 – 2012)

    Khaled Holmes 6-4 300 (Rd. 3/4 – 2012)

    Colorado:

    Nate Solder 6-9 315 (Rd. 2/3 – 2011)

    Ryan Miller 6-8 310 (Rd. 5 – 2012)

Hopefully, things get a little bit easier as the season progresses.

If anyone wants to read even more about the game, I finished putting together the early collection of the quotes. The Colorado papers had quotes that weren’t in the collection from UH or the University of Colorado. I’ll add the Longmont paper, the Star-Advertiser, and any other quotes to this in the morning.

    http://uhwarriorquotes.blogspot.com/2010/09/quotes-from-uh-colorado-9182010-early.html

  683. Garret September 18, 2010 9:14 pm

That long pass play was the longest play on offense in all these years that Hawkins has coached at Colorado!

Hansen connected with Clemons on a 73-yard touchdown pass down the west sideline. It was the longest offensive play for the Buffs in the Hawkins era.

    http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_16112546

  684. Garret September 18, 2010 9:14 pm

Colorado entered the game feeling that they could run the ball against UH.

“Stats don`t lie and a lot of teams have run the ball well on them,” Stewart said. “We have good backs, so we knew we were going to come out and do the same thing.”

    http://www.dailycamera.com/cu-college-sports/ci_16115519

  685. Garret September 18, 2010 9:16 pm

Note about the play where Pilares was caught from behind…if this Colorado player doesn’t make that amazing effort, Pilares would have scored instead of UH being stopped on 4th down.

On the second snap of the game, Warriors quarterback Bryant Moniz hooked up with Kealoha Pilares for an 80-yard pass play. With 13 NFL scouts watching from the press box, Smith ran Pilares down from behind after giving him a 15-yard head start to prevent a touchdown.

“Those hustle plays are the plays the coaches are harping on in practice,” Smith said. “In fact, you can`t even practice if you`re not running to the ball.”

ESPN College GameDay will be in Boise next week, the first time ESPN GameDay is in the state of Idaho. The BSU-Oregon State game will be on *ABC*, not ESPN.

Boise State confirmed Saturday night that ESPN’s College GameDay pregame show will originate from Boise State’s campus next Saturday.

“About time,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said.

The Broncos’ game against Oregon State will be a full national broadcast on ABC. Game time is approximately 6 p.m.

  688. Garret September 18, 2010 9:44 pm

BSU had agreed to pay an entry fee to the MWC, but now that fee will be waived for all 3 WAC teams.

Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada won’t pay an entry fee to join the Mountain West but may accept a lesser share of revenue sharing when they initially join, Thompson said. Boise State agreed to pay an entry fee but that was waived when the league agreed to help Fresno State and Nevada afford the transition.

I’ve been impressed with Pilares’ speed in the last few games but on that 80 yarder he didn’t really seem to be going full speed at the end. Out of breath? Out of steam.

I’m pretty sure come time to play our conference schedule, each team will play smash mouth football and run all day. I know I would against our Swiss Cheese defense. So many pukas to run through just pick one and go. I fear Nevada most with Kaepernick and Taua in the backfield. Even Idaho with Kama Bailey is going to eat us up if something doesn’t change. If I was a running back I would circle the UH game as my highlight reel breakout game and cash in on at least a 100 yard rushing day easy!

  714. leon September 19, 2010 5:57 am

Wash St vs SMU, June Jones had a maile lei on and the stands at SMU was barely half full.

  715. Pauoa Boy September 19, 2010 6:03 am

So Tiwanak says that Colorados DLine was aiming for the shins which is why they couldn’t get a push??? Really??? How about getting lower and using some leg drive. On those goal line stands the Oline was to upright from the snap. Its obvious the Dline is going to push back and dive low. Shute you had 3 previous downs to figure it out so by 4th down should’ve been like hmm…he keeps going for my shins, now what should I do…maybe get lower or wait didn’t we practice shedding cut blocks??? Its these simple lapses during the game by the players that are destroying us. Too many mental errors by everyone from top to bottom…coaches and players. What is so frikkin irritating is that they are all correctable and simple fixes but yet they are still happening at the most oppurtune times during the game. This is killing us and I dunno what the deal is but Coaches need to get a handle on the situation with a quickness and have the team play more disciplined ball. Shit we have the athletes, we have experienced minds to tap into, what the heo???

  716. Pauoa Boy September 19, 2010 6:13 am

Anyway, we need to come out and literally kick Charleston Southerns okole. Just blow them out and give the boys some confidence and some swagger heading into conference play. Keeping it close ain’t going to cut it. The Warrior boys need to just slam these guys. I haven’t made a prediction yet in hopes of not to bachi the team, but for this game against a D1AA, I think the boys will finally get it… 52 – 6.

RE: Michigan State. Anyone else think that ND’s defense on that play was odd? They didn’t put on much of a rush, which is understandable; why risk a penalty that could extend the drive. But they also dropped two guys into coverage in the middle of the field and Gantz was STILL wide open!!! MSU had all the time in the world to throw and wide open, streaking receiver.

The story below concentrates on the play clock running down, but I think ND’s defensive reaction (or lack thereof) is odder.

There must be a lot of hung over Tsaikos and Tsaikettes this morning.

  721. Bigislandkurt September 19, 2010 7:19 am

The recipe for beating the warriors is pretty apparent:

Run Run Run. The defense WILL NOT stop you. RUn RUn RUn. Keep the Clock running and and Keep Moniz and Co. off of the field.

If you do this, GARANZ you beat the WArriors. Pretty simple.

Let’s face it, after three games, our defense cannot tackle worth Sh**. Our much talked about/much praised in the off-season Dline — Maetoga, Correia, Tuipulotu, etc. have been controlled rather easily by all three teams we have faced. No pressure on the QB, no real stops for loss. Man, I really thought we were going to do better. After 3 games, it’s actually the OLINE who has been the highpoint in the trenches. No can, this kine.

Liz, thanks for the Karaoke suggestion. I’mma have to try that one…with a few shots of Patron. I think my first selection will be “I will survive” by Gloria Gaynor. “At first I was afraid, I was petrified…”

  726. UHfanInOC September 19, 2010 8:08 am

Been a lurker for a while, lots of great info thanks! Especially to those like Garret and others who spend time digging these nuggets for us folks on the mainland starved for UH sports.

    Couple of observations:

    – It looked to me when I watched this game live, the personal subbing (& fatigue) on the defense caused issues. Is there any word coming from Mack or Aranda on what’s going to be done to address this (maybe I should watch the Mack show now on FCS?).

    – Why can’t the Warriors use something other than the R&S inside the 5 as many have already suggested?

    – Hearing Coach Mack on TV, I don’t sense that he isn’t a great communicator when giving interviews and such. If this is happening in the inner circle with the team, I wonder how he can fire up the team (again the grandfatherly image comes to mind vs being a William Wallace leader). Anyone know if Mack is able to command the team and give kick in the rear/fire up speeches? Tomey would be great for this.

    – It would be really interesting to me, to see someone like Tomey be head coach, move Mack to DC and keep the rest of the coaches as is (well Aranda would move).

    – With the team in dire support of fans, especially now, why wasn’t the stadium filled against USC?

Frustrated of course, but still with the team…I’ll be watching the team next week vs Charleston on TV. Hope the news out of UH football is better in the next few weeks. Big mahalo again to ST, Garret and others for making this a great and informative blog site!

    Morning Tsaikos!

    Oh well:

The bad news: I screwed up the radio broadcast; I.e. Didn’t get it recorded.

The good news: the game is not a keeper. Don’t think there would be much of a demand for a copy.

Oldie- I think that for this game, the TV commentary is just fine.

What I like is emphasis on the positives. It made the game more enjoyable to watch- even with the loss.

  730. protector September 19, 2010 8:25 am

I kind of like al’s suggestion on #635, utilizing David Graves’ versatility near the goal line. It might give opponents more things to worry about & cause that split-second hesitation that can make a difference.

  731. papajoe2 September 19, 2010 8:38 am

I was going to wait for the new blog today for posting this, but I have to run some errands. Garret or anyone else who knows the answer please respond. I liked the idea of Hawaii playing on a neutral field on the mainland for one of those bigger pay days, if we go independent. But I also wondered if we played at the Rose Bowl for example, how would we fill up the stadium to get one of those big paychecks? By playing in the 49ers’ new stadium, will the owners of the stadium guarantee the money? Being from Hawaii, I’m still not sure if we could fill up the stadium. The Rose Bowl seats 100,000? We cannot even fill up 50,000 seat Aloha Stadium and that’s our home. Now, to my point. In today’s SA, there is mention of a doubleheader that will be played at the Georgia Dome between Aurburn and Clemson, followed by Tennessee-North Carolina. They have a sponsor for the game in Chick-fil-A. How much would Hawaii get if they played in a neutral site game? How about a double header involving Hawaii? We would be a natural draw with our exciting offense and, unfortunately for us, a draw for our opponent with our porous defense. The second game could be between marquee teams from closer to the area. We would have to play a running team because if we played a passing team, both games would take over 8 hours to complete with warm up time added. Imagine the money made from the concessions as almost all the fans will consume food and drink with the games being sooo long. Just how much money would be made if there was just 1 game involving us? What if there is a double header with a sponsor? Wouldn’t it be like a carnival atmosphere? Inviting local bands for a parade and activities nights before the games. Any thoughts on this matter?

  732. Michigan Warrior September 19, 2010 8:41 am

When we go to our hurry up offense, we are extremely productive too. If our opponents want to play that with us, we should do that against them to take back momentum. Our receivers know how to gain separation and get that YAC.

Do we need to simplify our defensive schemes to lessen confusion? And if we have too many men on the field, why didn’t we burn a timeout instead of giving up that first down? That was a crucial stop that we gave away. We let them convert the next third down, and then they just marched down the field. From that point on, they gained confidence and just poured it on. That, plus our many mistakes, from start to finish.

I still feel like, if we can fix these things, we will be successful. Can we fix these things first, before the rest of the season sneaks up on us, please? I still believe Moniz runs a sweet option. We should’ve used it on one of those goal line stands, at least. And, green broke away from blocking duties and was wide open on many dump-offs. We didn’t call a single shovel to burn them on their rush.

  733. protector September 19, 2010 8:41 am

    Pride on #668,

Good point. After the USC game, people wanted to harp on UH’s D being clueless, emotionless, incompetent, etc. and I got kind of ticked off, because nobody seemed to give USC’s O-Line and athletic ability any credit for neutralizing the pass-rush. To me, they just torched our Senior CBs who never tried to jam the receivers at the line and seemed incapable of playing bump-and-run, even though LD had a rep for it. Similarly, USC’s D was ridiculed, rather than the precision & dynamic quality of UH’s Offense (not to mention the great performance by the O-Line) being recognized.

  734. Michigan Warrior September 19, 2010 8:43 am

    A doubleheader… now that’s an interesting idea!

  735. palolo September 19, 2010 8:47 am

Can anyone tell me what is Moniz record as a starter? I can only think of 3 or 4 games that he has won. I know Austin won his only start. Hawaii has always had a poor defense, it’s just that we scored so many points we won anyway.

That’s all they are – rumors. They did that after 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and now 4. Everyone knows there will be a sequel, so of course people are wondering. I still have Game Informer Magazines that were speculating that the game after Vice City would be set in the 70’s. I wouldn’t put any stock into rumors until you hear from the company or see screenshots or interviews with people from Rockstar.

I have been reading your blog posts during my lunch break, and I must admit the entire article has been very valuable and very well written. I thought I would let you know that for some reason this blog does not display well in Internet Explorer 8. I wish Microsoft would quit changing stuff. I have a question for you. Would you mind exchanging blog roll links? That would be really neat!

You ought to seriously think about working on growing this blog into a major authority in this market. You obviously have a grasp handle of the topics everybody is looking for on this blog anyways and you could without a doubt even make a buck or two off of some advertisements. I would explore following recent topics and raising the amount of write ups you put up and I guarantee you’d begin seeing some amazing traffic in the near future. Just a thought, good luck in whatever you do!
