Ingram cut; Scout Bowl I

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2010

It’s a shame that the New England Patriots cut long-snapper Jake Ingram. Ingram’s  a good player, and he should catch on somewhere else.  * * * * *  The Scout Bowl had an exciting finish, with the offense winning on the first play of “overtime.” With the score tied, the ball was placed on the defense’s 25. Slotback Justin Clapp ran a double move — corner/post — to break free in the end zone for the winning pass from David […]

Scout scrimmages tomorrow, Wednesday

By Stephen Tsai on November 8, 2010

The Warriors will conduct full-contact scrimmages  — featuring scouts, redshirts and lower-depth-chart players — tomorrow and Wednesday.  There are not enough healthy players to have two full teams, so it will be a scrimmage matching the offense and defense. The format is disappointing because it means there will be no draft. Running back Sterling Jackson and quarterback David Graves were projected as the top picks.  * * * * *  Shane Austin might be the backup quarterback, but he is […]

Fall break

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2010

After 10 weeks in a row without a break, the Warriors enter a bye week, which will be used mostly to rest, heal from injuries, catch up on school work — four road trips have consumed 16 school days — and recruit.  One of the concerns is safety/rover Spencer Smith’s right forearm. He missed six games after suffering a fracture against Army. He was medically cleared last week, started yesterday, and then lasted only one defensive series because of pain […]

Boise State 42, UH 7

By Stephen Tsai on November 6, 2010

BOISE — There actually are such things as good losses.  The Warriors’ 42-7 loss to Boise State wasn’t one of them.  The Warriors could not get to BSU quarterback Kellen Moore, who threw for more than 500 yards in only three quarters, nor could they give enough time to their own quarterback, Bryant Moniz. Without right slotback Kealoha Pilares, who did not play because of a strained hamstring, the offense suffered, especially left slotback Greg Salas. In the postgame, head […]

Feeling blue

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2010

BOISE — Something about Bronco Stadium’s blue field brings out the liveliness in the Warriors. They had a fun practice, showcasing some fake trick plays — spies watching? —  and working mostly on alignments and assignments on defense and special teams. (The Warriors will have a real walk-through in the hotel parking lot.)   * * * * *   The coaches are spent most of the day meeting with the dozen NFL scouts that are here for the game. […]

Not-so-private practice

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2010

MERIDIAN, Idaho — The Warriors practiced for a little more than 2 hours at Meridian High School, whose nickname  is … the Warriors.  “That’s why we picked this place,” head coach Greg McMackin mused.  It was chosen, in fact, because it was about 4 miles from the hotel where the team is staying. And Meridian’s field is an artificial surface.  The Warriors went through their menu of plays, and the defense did well, with linebacker Corey Paredes intercepting three passes […]

Getaway day

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2010

The Warriors endured a rainy workout in their final Manoa practice before Saturday’s road game against second-ranked Boise State. The Warriors departed the islands this afternoon.  The Warriors did not mind the wet conditions. Chilly rain is expected Saturday in Boise.  Right slotback Kealoha Pilares did not practice today, but will make the trip and is expected to start.  Spencer Smith, who recently was cleared. also practiced extensively, and will be used in some of the Warriors’ new defensive schemes.  […]

Tradeoffs

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2010

In traveling a day earlier, the Warriors will be giving up a full practice with their scout teams. But by leaving tomorrow afternoon, the tradeoff is the Warriors will have an extra day to get acclimated to Boise. UH associate head coach Rich Miano said the Warriors enjoy traveling because there are fewer distractions on the road. With a 3-1 road record, there probably is something to that.  The Warriors have  yet to have a bye this season. While there […]
