Feeling blue

BOISE — Something about Bronco Stadium’s blue field brings out the liveliness in the Warriors. They had a fun practice, showcasing some fake trick plays — spies watching? —  and working mostly on alignments and assignments on defense and special teams. (The Warriors will have a real walk-through in the hotel parking lot.)

The coaches are spent most of the day meeting with the dozen NFL scouts that are here for the game. This morning, the scouts watched wide-angled videos of the Warriors games in a hotel conference room. A Minnesota Viking scout attended yesterday’s 2-hour practice.

  13. Shoko November 5, 2010 6:36 am

One thing I noticed with the Idaho Statesman and the Reno Gazette-Journal, the stories they report is that they always give respect to the opposing team.

    Case in point:

Terrific trio: Hawaii’s high-octane passing attack powered by Moniz, Salas and Pilares

    HNL:

There’s the usual at the top of the list: Greg Salas, Kealoha Pilares and Alex Green.

But, lately, scouts want more information on Jeramy Bryant and Mana Silva.

And, again, everybody seems to think that Adrian Thomas will get a shot in somebody’s NFL camp.

  17. Stephen Tsai November 5, 2010 6:47 am

    Shoko:

    1) They have good reporters over there.

    2) They get access to UH players, whereas Nevada and Boise State do not allow an “opposing” team’s media to interview their players in the week leading to a game.

Even Mack thought that was strange.

  18. Stephen Tsai November 5, 2010 6:49 am

UH will be breaking out some new schemes this week.

Remember the hook-and-lateral play last week? That actually was a set-up for a more innovative play. UH has some innovative things in the works.

  21. Stephen Tsai November 5, 2010 6:53 am

Interesting debate in today’s Idaho Statesman.

It appears there is a chance that Boise State could go undefeated and still miss out on a BCS game.

What’s interesting is what’s not being said. In the past, the WAC would help place its member in other bowls to open up more bowl opportunities for league members. Anyone else notice that Benson has been rather quiet on Boise’s situation? Anyone notice that Boise never really mentions the WAC much? Interesting to see where Boise lands if it doesn’t get a BCS bid.

  22. LizKauai (iPad) November 5, 2010 6:57 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Are no scouts looking at Moniz?

  23. Shoko November 5, 2010 6:57 am

    ST #18,

Agreed, they do have good reporters and it is strange that there are differing policies about interviewing players in the week leading the the game. But it should be noted that the Idaho Statesman (Cripe and Murphy) or the Reno Gazette-Journal (Murray or Hinxman) don’t have anything to do with the media policy set forth by the two schools. Perhaps, UH should change their policy as well? Just a thought…

  24. Shoko November 5, 2010 7:01 am

Interesting tidbit of TCU joining the Big East. Seems like a done deal, but one never knows for sure until the official statement from the conference is announced.

The 16 Big East presidents voted Tuesday to add two additional football-playing schools, a move sure to trigger another round of conference realignment.

The Big East currently has eight football-playing members and will expand to 10. TCU, a member of the Mountain West Conference, is expected to be among the schools considered by the Big East. Villanova, which is a member of the Big East in all sports except football where the Wildcats play in the FCS, is also one of the top targets.

It’s been a LONG time coming. I sure hope my MN Vikings draft a Warrior this year! I wouldn’t mind they signing a former warrior who wore #15 either!

Last warrior drafted by the purple people was consensus All-American Al Noga in ’86.

Hopefully, Boise State will still get their BCS Bid after lost to Warriors tomorrow. Hopefully.

Then finally, BSU power comes in to play. There have been many BCS Bowl teams with one lost. Even with one lost, BSU belongs in BCS Bowl Games.

    We shall see after tomorrow…

Go Warriors… And Buck those Broncos…

  28. expat November 5, 2010 7:15 am

The WAC will only just be able to fill its existing bowl tie-ins, right? We have four bowls — right now Hawaii, Nevada, and Boise are eligible.

Fresno should be able to pick up one more win but there are no easy games left for them. They might be a bit banged up facing Idaho right after Nevada and then Boise.

LaTech will have to win three of their next four which means they will have to beat either Fresno or Nevada to be bowl eligible. They should be able to beat both SJSU and NMSU.

Idaho has to win three of their next five games. Assuming they can beat SJSU at home and Utah State on the road they will have to beat either Nevada or Boise at home or Fresno away.

There is a possibility that the WAC ends up with more eligible teams than spots but for that to happen Fresno or Nevada would really have to falter. Should be interesting down the stretch.

  29. Stephen Tsai November 5, 2010 7:16 am

    Shoko:

No, at first, we thought, If we can’t interview them, then their hometown reporters shouldn’t be allowed to interview UH players.

But that’s just small thinking. As isolated as UH is, it needs the publicity. The Warriors have players with such interesting stories. Those stories need to be told outside of the state.

  30. Stephen Tsai November 5, 2010 7:18 am

If TCU bolts, as everyone expects, that leaves room for one more opening …

Hmmm. Which WAC school has a bowl tie-in?

  31. Shoko November 5, 2010 7:18 am

    Expat,

Don’t forget about the Kraft Fight for Hunger Bowl. Prognosticators have predicted that Nevada will be in there with the PAC 6th place team.

  33. Michigan Warrior November 5, 2010 7:20 am

#22… ST… so true! In the not-too-distant-past-WAC, before the defectors left to create the MWC, there was constant talk of how many WAC teams we might be able to send to the post season every year. We’d always look at how many were eligible, and who we might be able to send out to a Bowl Game outside of those hosted by the conference.

  34. gigi-hawaii November 5, 2010 7:20 am

    ST,

why didn’t Heffernan confiscate the spy’s video camera? He could then purge it and return the camera to the spy.

David says BSU could be fined if the spy was hired by BSU.

  35. Slugger November 5, 2010 7:24 am

Morning, gangees!!! It’s probably colder here in MN than in Boise.

Cheaters never win. This is the first time I’ve heard of someone trying to spy & video tape the practice.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  36. Michigan Warrior November 5, 2010 7:25 am

#28… I think it will come down to final BCS rankings. One thing’s for sure… Notre Dame won’t be in a BCS game this year too, and the ACC and Big East teams aren’t even in the top 12 or top 16 (yet). Boise should still be higher than teams from both of those conferences, unless they have a total meltdown this month.

  37. Shoko November 5, 2010 7:28 am

    ST #30,

Well, you know how it is with hometown papers, they get preferential treatment. They are what brings people to the games, so its not surprising.

I agree that Warriors with intersting stories needs to be told. Chris Murray (RGJ) picked up the story of Might Mo couple of weeks ago prior to the Pack-Warrior game. Delivering pizzas to provide for his family and such. When you think about, Chris didn’t have to report that, but he did. Why? Because there are alot of Hawaii fans in the area.

  38. bighilofan2 November 5, 2010 7:29 am

    one more time….

We are Hawaii. We are the Warriors. We have presence. We have confidence. We posture ourselves properly. When we walk into a room, we have a walk with a commanding presence. Boise state has to beat us. They have to play their best game to beat us. We are the leaders in the WAC for the year 2010. We are in the lead in the conference. We are at the top of the conference standings. Boise State has to beat us. They will need all of the help that they can get. They will need hometown advantage, they will need to paint their field blue. They are coming onto our field to try to beat us. Yes, our field. Every field that we step onto is our field. Everything between the lines is ours. We will own the line of scrimmage, we will own the field. No matter what city we go to, we will own the field. That is our posture. That is the culture that we are building as Warriors. Teams have to play up to us. Nuff said.

  39. HawaiiMongoose November 5, 2010 7:30 am

ST, #31, I’m not sure why the MWC would seek a replacement if they lose TCU. Without the Horned Frogs they’d have no shot at AQ status, which would eliminate their motivation to continue adding schools with strong football programs. And they would be be at nine members, which is ideal for football scheduling. I don’t see them adding another mouth to feed for no good reason.

  40. bighilofan2 November 5, 2010 7:34 am

a visual Meltdowns has a starting point. Boise is gonna know tomorrow that the Warriors are for real.

  42. RupertDaStupert November 5, 2010 7:35 am

Greg Salas is a magical player. Jim Schultz with his great circus catches remains indelible in my mind. Golden Richards was very speedy and parlayed it into a career with the Dallas Cowboys. Allen Brown was superb. Walter Murray was a tall, do it all speedster. Ashley Lelie made unbelievable catches. Devone Bess-who needs to say more? Chad Owens-Mighty Mouse. Mo Moniz is not accurate by nature, but is a magical player. He has great intuition, instincts, can ad lib with the best, aware of everything going on in the field. If he continues, next year he should have a break out year. The key tomorrow will be Mo. If he can start off strong. And of couse Greg Salas doing his magic, and Kealoha, Rodney and company giving Mo good targets to throw to. The defense, will have to play a perfect game. K. Moore was like Joe Montana in his prime, unstoppable. So both the offense and defense will have to be perfect or near perfect to pull it off.

Boise should still be higher than teams from both of those conferences, unless they have a total meltdown this month.

    Michigan Warrior,

It doesn’t matter if BSU is ranked above other at-large teams in the BCS standings. If a school like Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Stanford is available as an at-large team and they will be a bigger TV draw, BSU can easily be left out. It already happened once where BSU went undefeated as a member of the WAC and did *not* go to a BCS bowl game because the MWC champion was ranked higher than them. Last year BSU was the #2 non-AQ team and made it to a BCS bowl game…but if Nebraska had beaten BSU in the Big 12 title game, then Nebraska would have taken the Fiesta Bowl (which has a tie with the Big 12) spot and Texas would have taken the at-large spot.

If you look at the order that the BCS bowls will pick this year, things are *not* favorable for BSU. BSU has no draw for the Orange Bowl and is not a new team for the Fiesta Bowl. The TV ratings already show how a Big 12 or Pac-10 team will draw bigger TV audiences for a BCS bowl than BSU.

If BSU goes undefeated and misses a BCS bowl, UH loses out quite a bit of money. However, UH should beat BSU tomorrow and then the BCS system will sigh with relief.

    HawaiiMongoose,

I don’t understand why you say that the MWC “has no shot at AQ status” without TCU. If you look at the current BCS AQ rules (which determines which conferences will get AQ status starting 2012), the MWC will be in the *same* position without TCU that they are in now.

    1. Note that the Big East is not moving quickly so *all* of TCU’s BCS points and rankings count for the MWC in this evaluation period. TCU will be playing in the MWC next season, so they count for the MWC and not the Big East.

    2. Even if you throw out Utah, TCU, and BYU and you add just BSU to the MWC, they *still* pass 2 of the 3 criteria for AQ status. They are also #7 in average computer ranking (with or without TCU) for conferences, so they will be going through the appeals process after next season. SDSU improving so significantly this season eliminates a bottom feeder and that is the key for them–their bottom teams kill their average far more than what the top teams can make up.

    3. The MWC will get a 25% bonus for their BCS points because they will have 9 teams or less counting for them in the 2008-2011 evaluation period.

Fresno State, Nevada, and any other team the MWC adds will *not* count towards the 2008-2011 evaluation period. However, they will need to have at least 2 ranked teams each year in the 2010-2013 evaluation period and that could be Air Force, Fresno, Nevada, or a team they add in 2012 to get/keep AQ status.

  53. Garret November 5, 2010 7:48 am

    PolyMom,

Thank you for the kind words in yesterday’s blog.

  54. Garret November 5, 2010 7:54 am

By the way, if you look at the numbers the Big East adding Villanova and TCU would be a net *decrease* in their conferences overall computer rating, especially since Villanova’s D-IAA years in 2010 and 2011 will count towards the Big East’s average in the 2010-2013 evaluation period. So, if the Big East expands by adding Villanova and TCU, they could be granting the MWC AQ status because Villanova will kill their average.

If the Big East adds Central Florida instead of TCU as rumored, then they *will* kill their average and all of a sudden the MWC will be a top 6 conference in all 3 categories and automatically be an AQ conference. By going to10 teams, the Big East will get a 12.5% bonus instead of the 25% bonus they have been relying on.

  55. Michigan Warrior November 5, 2010 7:57 am

Rolo had a slow start as a quarterback. But given a second chance, he was unbelievable! Rolo calls game plans as brilliant as he’s been showing, all the NFL scouts will be drooling. Dave Aranda is like General George Patton. Take no prisoners. The very thought of losing is disgusting to him. Americans/Hawaiian. will not accept losing. The very thought of losing is disgusting!!!! FOLLOWUP IN TODAY’S “FRONT-PAGE” STORY TO MY POST IN YESTERDAY’S BLOG:

Abercrombie announced a transition website — NewDayHawaii.org — and urged those interested in jobs in his Cabinet or administration to apply by Nov. 15. Bill Kaneko, Abercrombie’s campaign manager, is the transition director.

Please nominate qualified people for positions to be appointed by DaGov in his cabinet dealing with the University of Hawai`i & the Department of Athletics as well as being appointed to the Stadium Authority.

Also, according to Ian Lind’s blog, Neil appeared on the L & L show. Any comments from folks here?

NEED SOME HELP: Bought a 20 lb. frozen turkey at Safeway yesterday for $10 for tumorrow night’s Family Promise dinner, but we cannot get it thawed & roasted in time – even if we leave the football game at the half – since we will need about four defrosting days all totaled before putting the turkey in the oven. The plastic covering has a couple of holes in it which we found out when we tried to thaw it in cold water so that option is out.

Will be buying a beef roast, fish, and ham later on today as an alternative. Now all we have to do is figure out what we’re going to do with all that turkey which we’ll be roasting on Sunday. Any suggestions?

Will try to get to the softball game for a few innings before heading on over to The Stan for the volleyball match. Probably both Wahine sporting events will be blowouts.

GO WARRIORS!!! Bet Boise will be noise tomorrow.

  58. Garret November 5, 2010 8:07 am

    Michigan Warrior,

I have all of the BCS bowl picking rules memorized from when UH was going to one in 2007. To summarize things easily:

    6 AQ conference champions

TCU or Utah in National Championship game or Rose Bowl

    At-large pick from the SEC

At-large pick from the Big 10

BSU *or* an at-large pick from the Big 12 or Pac-10

That is why I phrased my answer the way I did above. I think that 2 teams from the SEC and Big 10 are given, so BSU is competing with Big 12 or Pac-10 teams.

I don’t think that Missouri is a big TV draw, but both Oklahoma and Nebraska are and one of them will probably be the loser in the Big 12 title game and could be an at-large pick.

Stanford could also be an at-large pick if they win out. Arizona could also be an at-large pick if they win out.

So, there is *1* spot for either BSU or a second team from the Big 12 or Pac-10.

  59. Michigan Warrior November 5, 2010 8:08 am

There are only 6 guaranteed slots. Those are the conference champs of the ACC, Big East, Big10, Big12, PAC10, and SEC.

There are at least 4 at-large slots to fill. As terrible as the Big East and ACC have been so far this year, they shouldn’t even be given an automatic slot.

There will be some jockeying around for position as we get closer to the end of the season, and some of these teams start knocking each other off, plus conference championship games too.

We’ll see how it all plays out.

  60. Okole Maluna November 5, 2010 8:11 am

Just Win Warriors! and get ranked in Top 25 year after year, after this year.

Then We are the Final team to add in 2012 by MWC for AQ Qualification.

They will need us if we just keep winning and rank in Top 25.

Especially, after losing Utah, BYU, now TCU?

Even lot of Boise Fans are rethinking about the Move to watered down MWC.

    Go Warriors Beat Boise

Send them with Aloha to MWC, just like we did to Fresno and Nevada.

Three peat will be nice Aloha to all who leave us…

And like I said, we’ll see who bashes whom, and how the pollsters play politics, and position teams from those conferences.

I don’t have the rules committed to memory, but it’s open in another tab.

It’s too bad that we didn’t win those two games against USC and Colorado. Might’ve been some seriously interesting conversation leading up to this Boise game, and possibly being invited to the Rose Bowl if Oregon holds on.

    Dang!

  63. Michigan Warrior November 5, 2010 8:16 am

That 9-teams-or-fewer-25%-bonus is huge! Wonder if they’ll tweak it some this off-season, especially since some BCS conferences are growing even bigger.

  64. James November 5, 2010 8:19 am

    What’s going for the WAC?

This season it has some strong teams like Idaho, Fresno State and LaTech and it has some very strong teams like Hawaii, Nevada and Boise State. The conference is set up so any team can rise and become a winner. No discrimination. No playing favorites.

What else going for the WAC?

In all its travails in recent years, now and most likely in forthcoming years, it has and will be acting in good faith and with a strong sense of integrity. It does things the right way. This is the kind of good reputation it upholds. And you know in the cowboy movies, the good guys always come out on top. They are the guys who wear the white hats.

And what about the MWC? It was ill-conceived, formed by secretive, backroom deals. It back stabs, pulls all kinds of surprises, leaves you flat on your back and in simple language is a bully on the block. It is still up to its old tricks, stealing successful teams from other conferences.

Neva mind the money. Which conference would you choose to play?

Forget conference talk. Stick to this Saturday’s game. GO WARRIORS!

  65. Michigan Warrior November 5, 2010 8:20 am

And, as I posted earlier (today) on yesterday’s blog:

Hidden in the AP’s “Virginia Tech’s streak hits 7” article in today’s Star Advertiser, there’s this:

Utah AG meets with Justice Dept. about BCS

Utah’s attorney general met with Justice Department officials this week to discuss a possible federal investigation into college football’s Bowl Championship Series.

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is investigating the BCS for possible antitrust violations and is hoping to get the Justice Department to do so as well.

“They are doing their due diligence,” Shurtleff said in a telephone interview yesterday, a day after the meeting. “They had done their homework.”

Shurtleff said department officials did not commit to conducting an investigation.

Justice Department officials did not respond to requests for comment.

  66. Pomai November 5, 2010 8:25 am

Garret what would it take for the MWC to fall apart?

  67. HawaiiMongoose November 5, 2010 8:25 am

Garret, re #53, I have to admit to parroting conventional wisdom when I say that losing TCU will kill the MWC’s chances for AQ status. I grant your point that perhaps there is a way it could still happen. Having said that, if it’s true that the MWC “will need to have at least 2 ranked teams each year in the 2010-2013 evaluation period” then I think they’ll have a problem without TCU because (based solely on past history) I don’t see more than a marginal chance of Air Force, Fresno or Nevada attaining a Top 25 ranking in 2012 or 2013. Moreover with Moniz having graduated I don’t see Hawaii being a very good Top 25 gamble in 2012 or 2013 either.

Re #55, a lot of the chatter on the Big East board suggests that Villanova will agree to move up to FBS but not until 2014. They need time to make stadium improvements and other preparations. In the meantime the conference would bring aboard TCU in 2012. If I read your email correctly that would give the Big East a nice boost for the 2010-2013 evaluation period.

  68. chawan_cut November 5, 2010 8:26 am

    duffer,

    nope. when did you send?

  69. Garret November 5, 2010 8:28 am

Wow, ESPN gave Texas a *huge* TV contract. In addition to the $20 million or so that Texas will get as part of their Big 12 TV deal, they will get $20 million for their TV network for games not shown as part of the Big 12 TV deal. ESPN outbid Fox–a week ago it seemed that Fox had the rights won. So, Texas’ “local TV” deal is with ESPN…$12 million per year for their version of K5 broadcast across the country.

According to multiple sources, Texas stands to increase its TV revenue by $12 million per year thanks to an agreement reached with ESPN to distribute the Longhorn Network on cable systems beginning in the fall of 2011.

The sources said the deal is for 10 years and guarantees Texas $12 million annually on top of the TV revenue UT would receive as part of the Big 12’s current television contracts with ABC/ESPN and Fox.

Texas is expected to earn roughly $17 million in 2011-12 and $20 million beginning in 2012-13 just from its portion of the Big 12 television money.

    What’s the dealio with Kahuku?

  73. Garret November 5, 2010 8:32 am

    HawaiiMongoose,

“Conventional wisdom” on message boards is always suspect because I can tell that most people writing their opinions haven’t bothered to read the actual AQ rules. I’ve tried to clarify things a few times, but some people don’t care about the facts and just want to say that things will never happen. This is just like how “conventional wisdom” on WSN and on other places had UH being horrible this season and Mack getting fired.

Villanova not moving up until 2014 *would* be good for the Big East since it would keep them away from the 2010-2013 AQ period. Then they would keep their 25% bonus.

The big thing for the MWC is that with all the teams that are leaving, *one* of the teams left behind will end up in second place behind BSU and that team will have a chance to end up in the top 25 because of all the conference wins it will get.

Got to go now to teach in my daughter’s Math League.

    #70… Wow!

Was #74 directed to me? I have read the rules, and I usually won’t say anything unless I’ve read something somewhere to back up what I may write.

That’s also why I said we’ll see how the rest of the regular season plays out. I still think there’s a chance that the MWC and WAC will send one rep each. Don’t know how far the loser of the TCU-Utah game will fall. And, we still have tomorrow’s game to deal with.

Auburn still has to face Alabama, and then they got their conference championship game. Still time for movement up and down the BCS Rankings.

Also wondering if the voters will push the Big East and ACC higher, the closer we get to the end of the season. I mean, who really wants to watch a BCS game when one of the conference reps isn’t even a top25 team?

Still a good month worth of politics to go.

In any case, start the video at 3:00

Footage looks pretty clear to me…

  149. Garret November 5, 2010 11:11 am

    Michigan Warrior,

I never directed anything negative towards you. I respect your opinion and have learned from your posts.

Not only is Texas going to get far more TV money by staying in the Big 12 than all Pac-12 and SEC schools get, but Oklahoma is getting its own TV network also. The other Big 12 schools (Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Kansas, etc.) attended a couple of meetings with TV network people to see how they could make a joint TV network. If all the Big 12 schools end up with much more TV money than Pac-12 and SEC schools, then the Big 12 will not lose anymore teams.

BYU helped Texas set up their TV network and BYU is putting one together for their school also. Which conference is set up to let each school run its own TV network? The conference that BYU is trying to get into and is establishing close ties with its members (Texas, Oklahoma).

Notre Dame could keep its NBC TV deal if it joined the Big 12, something that Texas probably mentioned to Notre Dame a million times during all of those meetings they had over the summer. Notre Dame gets $9 million in TV money each year. Texas will be getting $30 million. The last-place team in the Big 12 will be getting *twice* the TV money from the Big 12 *and* be able to get the money from their TV network and/or local TV deals. To join the Big 10, Notre Dame would have to give up its NBC contract and agree to earn $10 million less in TV money than Texas will get.

  151. Warrior Expat November 5, 2010 11:14 am

The smugness with which they tell their version of the story also bothers me:

And that was the full extent of the exchange. But as the Hawaii newspaper wrote, Heffernan had a very different take on the experience. He told the paper words sometimes are more powerful than actions.

“I told him to get out,” Heffernan said, smiling, “and he got out.”

And if you look at all the comments on the newspaper’s website, it would appear the whole incident is being used as “locker room material” with a slant that it could have been a secret Boise State spy. Sorry folks, but it was just us local news people shooting a story.

Unfortunately this would not be the first time an undefeated team went through the whole season and lost their eligibility for the Hawaii state tournament. It’s happened before in other sports too here in Hawaii. Sorry Kahuku you have a great team!

If ESPN is in the mood to set up special ESPN networks for schools, I wonder if they would set up a network for UH? The ESPN network for Texas will show every volleyball, baseball, softball, etc. game throughout the country with the ESPN label on it…that would be a huge thing for UH in recruiting and exposure.

Texas is getting $12 million per year from ESPN even though the network will only have 1 football game each season (the game Texas plays against a D-IAA team is normally only on PPV in Texas) and only some of the men’s basketball games. An independent UH could offer up football games also. Or, a UH within the WAC could have ESPN replace Oceanic and show UH nationwide instead of just in Hawaii. Hmmm.

  156. Garret November 5, 2010 11:27 am

I feel really badly for all of the other players on Kahuku’s team if their season is ended this way. Sadly, this type of thing has happened before…but so many players who had nothing to do with the violation will be punished.

  157. Pomai November 5, 2010 11:33 am

At first it was he was taking pictures of the team standing around their buses, then the video show the players running plays. Might not be from BSu, but still not to bright.

  158. d1島 November 5, 2010 11:36 am

No news yet on the appeal.

This from scoringlive.com from last night

If the appeal fails, Kahuku would forfeit today’s scheduled 7:30 p.m. championship game against Mililani, and the Trojans would be awarded the league’s top seed in the upcoming state tournament. OC16 sports director Dave Vinton said the 4:30 p.m. OIA White Conference championship game between Kaimuki and Kalaheo would still be played and televised live from Aloha Stadium, though the kickoff time may be pushed back pending today’s ruling on Kahuku.

A failed appeal also would mean the Red Raiders forfeiting their state tournament berth, since the allegedly ineligible player – said to be a fifth-year senior – participated in a game or games before the state berth was clinched. OIA rules limit athletic participation to four consecutive school years, starting with when the student enters ninth grade.

Tomorrow’s scheduled third-place game between Leilehua and Wai’anae would reportedly still be played, but instead of the winner earning a state berth and the loser being eliminated, now both teams would be assured of berths beforehand with the winner receiving the OIA’s No. 2 seed and the loser coming in third.

Thanks for the clarification, Garret. I really try to do some homework before typing stuff. Everyone here knows, when it comes to information and keeping us all in the loop, it’s you, Cap/Doc, Kazz, and Pomai (among others) who steer us straight. I’ll try to do a better job of cross-referencing stuff too.

I find that Fox12 story spudderly ridiculous. They really think we’re THAT stupid? Why even mention “far, far away”?

Anyways, can you guys imagine if we could bring in even half, or a quarter, of what schools like Texas and Notre Dame are doing? I know that Notre Dame’s Alumni is active and extremely supportive. As long as we keep winning, in as many sports as possible, and keep building on that which Don Weir, RainbowCliff, and others have started, we can gain a stronger following. We have to keep all of this moving forward.

I’d like to see us get to the point at which Athletics pays for itself, and starts giving off of the top to the whole university system for upkeep and improvements.

I know it’s a dream, but it’s not a dream that I have alone. We’ve been complacent for far too long. We need to change our culture, when it comes to UH… and I feel like we’re doing it.

    Go, Warriors!!!

    Own Da Field!!!

  160. d1島 November 5, 2010 11:40 am

To those who say, “Why punish the whole team?”

When the right tackle gets caught flinching and is flagged for illegal procedure, do they tell him to move back 5 yards and everyone else starts from the same place? It’s a team sport.

I think our football AND basketball teams need to be solid before ESPN might even consider a deal with us… since those are the main breadwinners. We just happen to have some added bonuses with baseball, softball, volleyball, water polo, and some track and field stars.

If we could work out a deal in which we wouldn’t be in the red at the end of every season, that would be a good start.

Back to dreaming… (and, I probably should hele on and let the kids use this machine!)

  165. Garret November 5, 2010 11:46 am

If Kahuku really had a player play during 5 football seasons, that is a major problem. The player and coaches don’t keep track of how many years a player plays for a high school team?

Garret, I agree totally! My brother was on an undefeated baseball team in the 80’s and they were penalized on 2 players GED paperwork that were accepted by the DOE by then scrutinized later after the rival coach had them viewed again. Thus making the 2 role players ineligible. However, there was one game left at the end of the season and it was against the school that turned them in. So that year my brothers team had 1 win and beat the. 30-0! (exaggerating):)

    Looks like it Pcwarrior,

from KITV website updated at 12:07 pm today

In a meeting that started Thursday afternoon and lasted well into the night OIA officials voted to force the 10-0 Red Raiders to forfeit Friday night’s scheduled Red Division championship game against Mililani High School at Aloha Stadium. However, according to league bylaws, Kahuku exercised its right to appeal the ruling, choosing to argue its case before the OIA’s Council of Principals Friday morning.

The council ruled against Kahuku’s appeal.

#177 Pcwarrior – As much as a bummer this seems to be, rules are rules, as the old saying goes,”don’t do the crime unless you can do the time”. I have to agree with d1, they must have known, and if they didn’t then blame them not the system.

  177. geevum November 5, 2010 12:17 pm

If you can’t finish public school in Hawaii in four years, you shouldn’t be allowed to play football in your fifth. This is high school, not college. Obviously his time would have been better spent studying than at practice. That’s what they get for putting athletics ahead of basic academics.

  178. d1島 November 5, 2010 12:21 pm

    geevum,

Not piling on but clarifying, S-A reports that actually 2 players were involved. Sad…

The rumor began spreading last week when an anonymous caller informed the Star-Advertiser about the two players, claiming that they are fifth-year seniors. However, Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said at the time that he and athletic director Joe Whitford had checked into it and found the two student-athletes were eligible.

To date, no team has forfeited an entire season in OIA football while in contention to win the title. The league has no current fallback plan if the worst-case scenario were to become reality. The OIA has three Division I state-tournament berths.

  179. Pcwarrior November 5, 2010 12:33 pm

    D1,

I know in my brothers year, they took it like men and went out to beat the informant coach by the rules. That team had no regrets, like you said rules are rules and I agree!

But in the next summer we as 16-18s won the American Legion state championship and beat the likes if Fetters and Master and that Iolani dynasty. And went on to play at Stanfords Sunken Diamond and the likes of Barry Bonds and Greg Maddux.

Marquee Match-up: Hawai’i at No. 2 Boise State

Saturday, November 6 at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU

Two of the top quarterbacks in the nation face-off this weekend when Bryant Moniz and the Hawai’i Warriors travel to Boise State to take on Kellen Moore and the Broncos. Moniz, who leads the nation in passing (360.8 yards per game) and total offense (373.44 yards per game), is guaranteed to be tested by the Broncos’ physical defense, which ranks third in the NCAA (236.43 yards per game).

After an impressive performance against Louisiana Tech which included 285 yards of total offense, two touchdown passes, a seven-yard touchdown reception and a 54-yard punt, Moore, who leads the nation in passing efficiency (188.30), will try to keep the Broncos undefeated and in the hunt for a national title. Boise State’s 21-game winning streak is the longest active streak among NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools.

I wonder who the Raider Hater is. Hawaii is small. The rat will be outed one way or another.

Kaimuki and Kalaheo get prime time now.

Rules are rules but this will kill the gate at both the OIA Championships and State Tournament.

The Raider fan that already printed “2010 OIA Champions” T-Shirts that was going to hustle them during the 4th Quarter of the game will now have a cool gift to give for Christmas.

That same fan that printed “2010 OIA Champions” shirts probably already has the screen made for the “2010 HHSAA Division One State Champions” shirt.

Gas sales will drop for all the Raider Nation that will no longer have to fill their tanks to make the trek over to the stadium.

Kaneohe Jack in the Box and Zippy’s will see a huge loss in late night post game pit stop food breaks for those typically making the drive back out to the North Shore.

There will be a lot less CHEEEEHOOOOOOO’s to be heard over the next few weekends.

Mililani kids will once again overtake the town center because they have nothing to do tonight. Get your theater tickets now because movies will be sold out.

St. Louis kids will breath a sigh of relief and Darnell Arceneaux is like-“I wish I didn’t have to win a state championship like this”

Darnell Arceneaux is also like-“Rod York has only been there one year and HE GOT AN OIA title?”

So much for that “School spirit personal pride” You know Coach Price and Kanoa Leahey will put a positive spin on it somehow.

  192. whitey November 5, 2010 1:18 pm

I for one can sympathize with Kahuku’s plight because my team lost it’s spot at the HHSAA championship. We went to the prelims and finished in the top 8 and was waiting for the finals. Went to get our card and was told we were late and “dq”. I was more than “pi” and vowed that this would never happen to any team in the future. With the help of another coach from the outer island, we made sure that the Oahu based schools neva took advantage of us country jacks. This case is not similar to mine, but it will make all teams be more aware about eligibility.

  193. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:19 pm

I bet all the Hawaii football leagues are double checking their playoff rosters.

  194. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:21 pm

Oahu schools have country jacks too. Blame the coach(es).

  195. whitey November 5, 2010 1:21 pm

and also can understand why there are rules, but to manini a rule to help a homebased school is not acceptable. eligibility is not a manini rule. manini rule is a subjective one which may be interpeted differently, very similar to penalities.

  205. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:32 pm

    Mr. whitey,

Again, name me a manini rule. If you understand why the rules are there then there should be no manini rule. They are there for a purpose.

  206. al November 5, 2010 1:34 pm

ncaa, and if you no can understand manini rule, let’s look at a simple football rule on pass interference. rule interpetation by officials is very subjective. a good defensive play can be judged to be pass interference. it all depends on how the official rules, not how the rules officiate.

    Go SoftBows!!!

    Beat the ‘Swords!!!

  216. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:40 pm

    Mr. whitey,

That is not a manini rule (pass interference). The call made by the official may be manini but in the official’s eye the rule was broken. By your reasoning you can also say roughing the passer is a manini rule. In fact, almost all rules can be manini since they are based on what was observed.

  217. Pcwarrior November 5, 2010 1:40 pm

    Al I agree.

KAHUKU press on and continue to strive towards your goal although this years is done. Next year will be a bitter sweet year for you and this years seniors. Continue on the tradition of Red Raider football!!!

    Now back to WARRIOR FOOTBALL!!

  218. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:42 pm

    #216,

Again, name a rule that favors one side, school, or league. Like I said, it is not the rule but an observation by a human being. Sure you may not like an outcome, but same could be said about anyone else that they deem are being wronged by an official’s call.

  219. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:48 pm

Regarding Kahuku, it could be the case where the parents did not know the rules. Just a thought.

  220. NCAA November 5, 2010 1:54 pm

Okay, just read the updated story in the S-A. It’s unfortunate what happened.

  221. whitey November 5, 2010 1:54 pm

ncaa, i can see you not one country jack, so i bow to you. me, i still one country jack and don’t plan to change anytime in the near future.

  222. d1島 November 5, 2010 1:58 pm

Since I had to skip LunChauWah today:

    Only get “Food for thot”…..

    Wea’s da “Fo da Keeds”?

Tomorrow’s Waianae-Leilehua game should be cancelled. No need risk injury since it’s no longer an elimination game. If they do play, both coaches should bus’ out the belts and make ’em flag football, no running allowed!

  223. NCAA November 5, 2010 2:00 pm

I am a country jack. It’s not about changing, it’s about seeing things from different perspectives. Like the saying goes, we can agree to disagree. That is fine with me.

  224. d1島 November 5, 2010 2:00 pm

Did you “digitally” add in the index fingers or do this year’s players not remember Blaze’s “salute” to you?

  225. NCAA November 5, 2010 2:02 pm

    Mr. d1島,

That’s a good idea. Just flip a coin for seeding purposes.

  226. PolyMom November 5, 2010 2:05 pm

@GARRETT, no, thank you for your wealth of information. It takes me a couple of hours to read all the posts on the threads…but I got a FEELING…THAT TOMORROW IS GOING TO BE A GOOD NIGHT IN HAWAII NEI!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI0W6J3oyLA

Can someone call Dan Inouye to help Hawaii? I think it will take this level of person to get involved to get Hawaii a place. Really, I feel Hawaii is discriminated against due to the distance. Hawaii is a part of America no matter what the distance to and from the Mainland.

  227. Pride. November 5, 2010 2:06 pm

Really think that the scouts are doing their due diligence on Greg Salas.

  228. Garret November 5, 2010 2:13 pm

MSNBC has a nice feature on the UH-BSU game.

Both coaches insist the showdown will have all the intensity of their 2007 matchup, when a Hawaii offense led by Colt Brennan and Davone Bess outscored the Broncos to win the conference title and a trip to the Sugar Bowl.

“Our team gets it,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “To have a team that is as hot as anybody in the country right now — this is going to be a good, tough, hard-nosed WAC championship-type game.”

Now Moniz hopes his high-powered offense can accomplish what no other WAC team has done in the last decade: beat the Boise State on its own funky blue turf.

“We know the opportunity is ahead of us, being the only WAC team to beat them on their field, and maybe the last team to do it,” said Moniz, referencing Boise State’s move to the Mountain West Conference next year. “So we’re ready for the challenge.”

    Warriors remember this:

Nuff said.

OK, film Boise’s practice and show it to us.

  255. Pride. November 5, 2010 3:39 pm

    1. Do it right.

Excecute your assignment. Do what you were coached and taught to do. If you are a defensive end, and ball flow away, do what you are supposed to do. Obey your rules, take you r proper pursuit angle. Look what for what it is that you are assigned to look for. If you have cutback, expect the cutback. If you have counters back to you look for the counter, of you have reverses, look for the reverse back to you. don’t sprint to make the tackle on the other side of the field, if you are assigned to take an angle that will insure that you catch the reverse. dop what you were taught and coached to do. Trust your brother s that they will do their job, and make sure that you do your job.

All eleven guys need to do their job. Not nine, not ten, not eight. All eleven need to do their jobs. Do your job. If your job is to set the edge, then set the edge and shorten the width of the field. O-line, don’t be blind. Expect the unexpected. Expect the blitz, the dogs, the twists. Expect the defender to take you inside then out. Expect the hard upfield rush with a club move inside. Expect everything to be thrown at you. Do not be surprised by anything.

Expec them to throw to the tight end. Expect them to set-up three tight ends to one side but to run at weak. Expect play action pass. Expect trick plays. Expect to be in a dogfight. Expect to get punched in the mouth. D-line expect to get cut, expect to be held. don’t cry, just play.

Expect the refs to hose you, don’t be surprised. Just play.

  258. Pride. November 5, 2010 3:48 pm

    2. Do it 100%

    No loafers allowed.

    No loafers allowed.

The only loafers allowed are the one in Robert Kekaula’s feet.

Eleven guys playing hard to the whistle on every play. Give 100%.

Giving 100% means physically, mentally , and emotionally.

Physically go 100% to until you hear the whistle.

Mentally means to know your assigments, and your coaching points. It means to make the adjustments on the field. It means to keep your head inthe game. Know what is happening, and be ready to enter when it is time. Don’t be celebrating a touchdown on the sideline, if you are on the PAT team. Don’t be daydreaming about your grilfriend back in Honolulu, if you are supposed to be on the punt return team. Keep your head in the ballgame.

Emotionally. Be at a high level, however keep your emotions in check. No stupid personal fouls for pushing, shoving, punching, late hits, excessive celebration. Personal fouls are selfish fouls. Don’t be selfish.

  278. isleboy November 5, 2010 4:38 pm

I for one am sick and tired concerning high school athletes violating eligibility

rules…..this has been going on for 50 years in Hawaii high school football…

    remember the 60’s…Kailua had a undefeated team…..same thing happened…inelgible

    players….

Why does it take RUMOURS to start investigations…..Coaches and School Administrators

should have been checking records in August when team was being formed…..Why now??

Feel bad for the players who did nothing wrong…..

I agree with isleboy. Why did they find out now? Its not like it hasn’t happened before. I feel for the players who play by the rules but i think that it is important that the rules are enforced. The rules are for all to follow.

    Aloha, Warriors!

As a fan of the Broncos, I very much appreciate the coaching wisdom posted by Pride, especially #259, #262. This is sound advice for every football team, and conveys the true heart of a warrior. Well said.

I am disappointed that your team exposed the Wolfpack before we were able to get some extra BCS cred for beating them, but I respect Hawai’i and admire that you gave Fresno and Nevada what they deserved.

Good luck (though, not too much) and I hope that none of the players get hurt.

  283. Ralph November 5, 2010 5:27 pm

Houston loses to UCF, SMU is now in first in C USA west division, and UCF seems to be the top dog in the east and probably favored to win the C USA championship. UH needs a team whose fans travels well n a formidable opponent to bring out the Hawaii fans on Christmas day UH vs SMU would draw fan interest from all over on ESPN. A shootout on Christmas day.

  287. madeinhawaii November 5, 2010 6:11 pm

I really believe that our defense is going to shock a lot of the Boise faithful. Against Idaho, on our first three possessions, Hawaii marched down to the redzone and turned it over twice on tipped interceptions, I think… both times, however, the defense responded and got the ball back without conceding any points to Idaho. That’s what got the Offense into rhythm and I anticipate that the defense will come on even strong against a very good Boise Defense and stun them. All they got to do is plant the seed of doubt into the minds of their fans and the hearts of their players.

    Go WARRIORS!!

HorseFeathers- are you going to the game or are you a fan from afar?

  290. geevum November 5, 2010 6:20 pm

My final thought on the Kahuku situation is that it all comes down to precedent. You can’t set a precedent that some rules will be adhered to and some not or that exceptions are made based on the might of the team. If you let this one go, then the next time someone knowingly uses an ineligible player, they can just point to the past and say there should be no consequences. A rule is rule. If it’s broken, intentionally or not, there is punishment. Too bad for the kids, but there is a mighty powerful lesson to be learned here.

And I know some folks said the game tonight should have been played regardless. What if key Mililani players were to get injured and not be able to compete in the rest of the tournament? Would that be fair?

Like it or not, I believe justice was served.

I agree with geevum. Its a B&W rule. I feel bad for the team and hope this is filed away as a life lesson. One thought…If the ineligible players were fifth year students, how old were they? If you are 18 years old are you not responsible for yourself.

  293. expat November 5, 2010 6:34 pm

    and one more tmie:

Nuff said.

Thou preparest one plate lunch before me in the presence of the Broncos. Thou anointest my head with one haku lei and my Nissan Titan runneth over dem donkeys. Fo shua “aloha” and mana shall follow me all the days of my life and we going cruz in the stadium at Halawa forever.

  307. A-House November 5, 2010 7:35 pm

First, must add our congrats to Kealoha and Mana on their recognition as true “student athletes”!

Second, for the past 4 days, I have seen rainbows within the valleys of Nuuanu and Kalihi and even above Halawa Heights. Science or “mana” sign for our Warriors tomorrow? Just like the 1992 Holiday Bowl, went jogging and saw some rain clouds approaching San Diego and at the very “tip” there it was, yes, a “rainbow”!

Third, to all the Kahuku players who trained and prepared for the 2010 season, you did well. Keep your heads up. And, for the seniors and juniors, UH is a good school with a very good football team. You can be a part of it!

khon 2 6 o’clock news: Moore and Leahy say OIA wrong to punish Kahuku football team because they used an ineligible player this season and game forfeits too harsh since player was not a starter and sparingly used throughout season ….this a sample of typical arrogant attitude of the elite within the media…rules are rules and if broken, pay the price…..Joe and Kanoa should be ashamed of their disrespect of the league rules/bylaws and using their media influence, in essence, to say that circumventing the rules are okay if it does not influence the outcome of contests…come on guys, get real because your attitude encourages arrogance among our youth….instead, you should be encouraging them to live by the rules otherwise suffer the consequences….I was shocked to hear the both of you taking the stand that you did…it may be too late for this topic but please rethink your philosophy for future opinions.

  321. Ala Wai November 5, 2010 9:23 pm

The media should report the news and editorializing should be limited to items not questioning black and white rules. The players in question will need the support of their the community, coaches and team mates. I have high admiration for Coach Torres and his team for owning up to the violation. Though deeply disappointing I hope they can rest peacefully knowing they did the right thing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Warrior Richard Torres who is playing the biggest game of his time at UH. I hope everyone rallies around the Kahuku grads on the team to support them.

The media meanwhile should remember that: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” – Samuel Johnson (1709-1784).

They seem to be in deep concentration despite BSu’s extensive orange and blue Warrior welcoming festivities. Well, you know, they had to decorate the place with orange and blue since green and black items were at a premium cost. 😉

  330. kev-1 November 5, 2010 10:05 pm

#315 Newbow . . . that’s a little bit of an overreaction don’t you think. Sure rules are rules, but this isn’t the NCAA. If the kid hardly played, then I agree that the punishment is a bit harsh. How about taking some W’s off the board or ban them from the state tournament. But if you watched any OIA football this year, you’ll notice that there isn’t a single team that even comes close to being in the same level as Kahuku.

Sounds like you don’t like Kanoa and Moore and took their opinions, that they are entitled to, and took it too personally for some reason. Joe Moore says things that irritate the heck out of me all of the time, but that doesn’t mean he is polluting the minds of our youth. Go easy my friend, and enjoy the UH game tomorrow.

  331. d1島 November 5, 2010 10:27 pm

    kev-1,

What is your response to a kid who was advised of the rule prior to the season and made the decision not to play because he was ineligible? Do you ask him, “Well, how good you? You going play plenny? If not, you should go play…nevah mind the rules!”

  332. d1島 November 5, 2010 10:34 pm

Joe and Kanoa should be happy that they can report that some Kahuku parents are thinking about suing the OIA.

Great message to the kids! You guys should be the champions so the rules should be applied differently to you. (The underlying message is, “if you no play as good as our kids, fuggetaboutit!”)

  333. OIA November 5, 2010 11:08 pm

Seems like sour grapes to me, especially since Kahuku DOMINATED and EMBARRASSED the mighty St Louis Crusaders 49-27 earlier this year, I wouldn’t be suprised where the anonymous phone call came from. hmmm

  334. LizKauai (iPad) November 6, 2010 12:10 am

Good night and Tsweet Warrior Dreams!

If you are on Kauai, please join us at Kalapaki Joe’s in POIPU to watch the Warriors and Boise tomorrow morning!

  335. Ala Wai November 6, 2010 12:23 am

The origin of the phone call is irrelevant. That Kahuku dominated the league and the ILH is irrelevant. Yes, Kahuku was clearly better than any other team in the state. Rules are established by the league and anyone participating in the league agrees to subject itself to the rules. Athletes in all sports know the rules set forth by the sport in which they play. Citizens of this country choose to live here and therefore subject themselves to its laws. If crossing the line of the rules is ignored or randomly applied to a select few what message is being sent? A society of elitism and exclusivity is an anarchy. That is why we have criminals and prisons. That is why we have professional athletes who believe they are above the law and the system. Life is not fair because all violators are not caught, but until an omnipotent and all knowing entity rules us we will be subject to rules and unfortunately victims of our own mistakes and shortcomings. Kahuku, Coach Torres and the league deserve our respect and our thanks for doing the best they know how.

Walked into the lobby to get some joe (‘nother great thing about the Marriott Courtyard is that they got Starbucks in-house). Just a regular ol’ haole boy (actually haole middle-aged man) wearing his vintage Hawaii Rainbows t-shirt. Only other folks there is a table of about six local-looking (as in Hawaii – non-haole – local) folk decked-out in Boinco blue and orange. Thought I was in bizarro-world. Turns-out one of them was one of the first Hawaii players to play for BSU and will be an honorary captain for today’s coin-toss. Pretty cool.

    focus, Warriors, focus!!!

Nuff said.

  361. RainbowCliff November 6, 2010 5:13 am

#312 Mr. A House: Can you explain to me or anyone else on this blog how the once

sacred “Rainbow” name that the Warrior football team ONCE had will apply any

significance to Warrior football who in great lengths rid that name from their existance ?

From my understanding “Rainbow” attached to Warriors was weak and feminine so the

powers of be stripped rainbow being associated to “Warrior” football as that name alone

was wanted because of it’s fierce demeanor in battle and never give up attitude.

So when a rainbow appears as you and other bloggers has stated on any area of beautiful Hawaii, then how can it relate to any significance of good omen to Warrior football when that name should NEVER be used describing this football team ?

I am a “RAINBOW WARRIOR” till the day I die as that name was meaningful to all Hawaii teams during my playing era as I do understand when a rainbow appears on the island the

significant meaning it has before our athletic contest BUT today it has no belonging to Hawaii Warrior football as I get disturb, confused and offended when mention in good spirit

to this football team who are Warriors only not “bows” !

Clarification will be appreciated as good morning to all of you !

    Rainbow Cliff

good morning kind sir. so let me speak up on behalf of my friend AHouse.

yasee, kind sir, I was a yallin maniac back in da day, 75-78. took my 2 daughters to plenny games in da south end zone, wit my frenz, mostly in da nose bleed section. CC yellow.

and my keeds still remembah da GO BOWS yallin an yallin

an denn….. we had da dark years…. da Von Appeln years…. when Alohaland was full of dispair and disrespected and and and just plain awful in da aina….

an we needed, i said needed, a mental change of pace…. enter June Jones…. and da man when give us hope. wit almost da same personel on da field, da season wen frum dark to light…. and many of us wen like… whoa….

an we started believin again…. and smilin again… and one of da tings dat wen change wuz our mindset, cuz plenny of us like to tink dat we still got it, maybe we no look like we got it… but … like…. when i see bulla’s kid’s pikchaz, i tink ah me.

so you see, Rainbow Cliff,.. I guess I’m saying… no matta wat we call dis team now, Warriors…. Rainbow Warriors…. you need da right public face fo make da name stick…

main ting… da name sticks good because you are moving a natoon, not one or 1000 men in da nation. my friend Marilyn Moniz Kahoohanohano, if she was UHAD, she’da gone back to Rainbow Warriors…

for me, I’m glad Jim Donovan stuck with Warriors… we just had too much change one time in 08. so I’m glad we are Warriors. you try fo change da little tings all one time, back an forth, we look wishy washy.

still love you and your name, and your spirit. good for you. Good for us.

I guess wat I’m saying, kind sir, is no get your britches all bunched up… you are still THE BEST at representing us, Hawaii. Love you, and have a great day!!! and….

    Go Warriors!!!!

  369. Annoddah Dave November 6, 2010 5:34 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Rainbow Cliff, you are right about the Warriors not being “Rainbows” anymore. That was the marketing change done by Coach Jones.

However, any rainbow in our fair islands is symbolic of good things to come. It brings a spiritual cleansing of the land, it brings hope for the future, it brings health and healing. Rainbows are essentially the staple of life for Hawaii. The water is the life giver and sustenance. Can you imagine Hawaii without rain. It would be an atoll devoid of life, fauna, flora, and human existence. For the ancients, the rainbow meant life could go on. Every drop of rain in Hawaii takes approximately a decade to result in our drinking water as it courses its way through the volcanic rock to be filtered and mineralized to become our life giving drinking water. Therefore, every rainbow is of particular significance to our lives in Hawaii. As for football, rainbows in the name is of little consequence as you allude. However, without the rainbow, there would be no football or life in Hawaii. That is why the ancients came here to stay. Their battles to defend the islands and their life have morphed into battles, not to the death, but ones where 6 points are achieved every time one crosses the goal line.

How’s that for a round about way of why the rainbow is still part of the culture…along with football!

    Go Warriors! Beat Boise!

The Sumb*tch Needed Killing: A Review of Death to the BCS

    October 18, 2010 by Kevin

This is a fun and infuriating book. The authors are obviously football fans and the manifest unfairness of the BCS obviously angers them. That comes through very clearly in their writing. They pull no punches and are not afraid to let their obvious contempt for the people who run the BCS — they refer to them as the Cartel — shine through. As a result, the book is anything but dry and often funny. The authors are pretty good at over the top sarcasm, and they indulge it enough that there are more hits than misses.

They have a lot to be angry about, as well. The authors conducted over a hundred interviews and looked at what must have been thousands of documents. And what they discovered is shocking, even to a BCS hating, college football cynic like myself. Even at my most cynical, I never would have guessed that a trip to the BCS championship game would have netted only 47,000 dollars. Yes, that’s forty-seven thousand dollars. The bowls are a massive scam, with payout figures eaten away by required ticket purchases and school sponsorships. Most teams who go to bowls lose significant amounts of money. even teams that go to the BCS games are not guaranteed to turn much, if any, of a profit. The chapter describing how school lined up to bankrupt themselves to attend the Motor City Bowl is shocking. The effect it had on the school that attended is as depressing as it is eye-opening.

The villains in this farce are named, and the evidence is made clear and tied together meticulously. The authors even have a very good plan for what to replace the BCS with. What they do not have, however, is a plan for how to replace the BCS. They state clearly in the book that their hope rests on either an anti-trust investigation, infighting in the BCS or general disgust with the system. The first in unlikely, the second would not guarantee that a better system would rise form the ashes, and the third is almost irrelevant. After spending the entire book demonstrating just how the BCS Cartel enriches itself at the expense of the sport despite their horrible unpopularity and how the incentives favor keeping the current system it is a little hard to believe that the information in the book, as shocking as some of it is, will force a change.

That is a small fault, however, in an otherwise enjoyable and eye-opening book. If you care about college football, good government at public schools, or well expressed contempt….

    [fill in da blank]

    okay… I’m in…..

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

All these detox procedures require only one key point and that is determination. Give it at least 10 days before trying to emit any sort of opinion on the overall effectiveness, bear in mind this is a well known treatment that has been around for decades, and that would be more then enough time to determine a scam. Take your time, and the outcome you crave will happen.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

It is perhaps all a legitimate personal thing then one that should be tried once to determine by yourself I guess.

Outside of the censure in Congress (which is absolutely meaningless and laughable if it wasn’t so pathetic) do criminal federal and state charges accrue or does he simply walk with paying back taxes, etc.?

I have both a garmin Nuvi 750 and also a model 360 that both failed within 24 hours of each other. I sent them back to garmin to get repaired , they came back fixed with no reason of the problem that was repaired Then 2 weeks later they both the 880 and also the 650 failed again. I was able to update the garmin 650 with the latest firmware and it started working again. Then 2 weeks later the 880 failed too. There is obviously a problem with this series of garmin gps. I am about to send my units back in for the second time and will make note of this, hoping for a upgraded replacement.
