Fall break

After 10 weeks in a row without a break, the Warriors enter a bye week, which will be used mostly to rest, heal from injuries, catch up on school work — four road trips have consumed 16 school days — and recruit.

One of the concerns is safety/rover Spencer Smith’s right forearm. He missed six games after suffering a fracture against Army. He was medically cleared last week, started yesterday, and then lasted only one defensive series because of pain in the forearm. Smith represents the perseverance found throughout the program. He fought his way from scout team to special teams to a starting safety’s job, as well as adjusting to three different defensive systems. He made one comeback this season. It would not be surprising if he made another.

From Nate Kuester, sports director at Boise’s Fox 12:

Hey there Setephen,

Apparently one of our photographers stirred up a hornets nest.  But what is real funny is what people are saying happened.  We still have the tape and I’ve watched it.  It’s funny to see how much it’s been built up.  I guess Coach Heffernan didn’t realize he was taking with Photographer Jeff Gordon of FOX 12, despite Jeff introducing himself and identifying him as a member of this station which we have on tape).  We have the whole calm exchange recorded and it lasted about about 30 seconds.  I want to make this clear, it was not Boise State.  It was FOX 12.  Our photographer was driving by Meridian High and saw the Warriors practicing.  Being a smart guy, he knew that was probably something I would want for my sportscast.  So he stood on public property off the school grounds shot video of the players milling around.  End of story.  I aired it on our 9 PM and 10 PM newscasts.  He was not hiding behind the fence.  It’s chain link.  How good of cover is that?  And the whole idea of a scared confrontation that is being represented is pretty funny.  But I understand how these things can take flight.  It’s fun to build up these rivalries, but it sounds like everyone is making a lot more out of this than it really was.

Regards, Nate

Just to things interesting, UH should have Aloha stadium insert a BLACK turf

    ala Boise St.

Imagine the ground heat and intimidation factor.

    Morning folks!

Although it may have been a blowout, the Warriors still have three remaining games to put up some serious beatdowns and put up some gaudy stats. Look forward to the UNLV game especially since the Rebels got that win last year. This will be a good redemption game for the Warriors.

On a bright note, considering what was expected prior to the start of the season and what the team has accomplished thus far, I would say the Warriors have surprised alot of naysayers and should be proud.

MAHALO to OUR WARRIORS, for a successful season, and the GREAT things yet to come…

  9. CoolEthan November 7, 2010 5:56 am

The smoke from Boise’s fire is still lingering back in the stadium. Somebody please put it out.

Plenty to learn from on this loss. It equates to the old saying, “Never be satisified”

Boise excercises that phrase every day, hence the endless formations and adaptions.

Hope this bye week could help with Pilares heal and return.

  10. Matt November 7, 2010 5:56 am

I hope Spencer Smith makes it back. He’s a true Warrior and one of the team leaders. Don’t want his senior season to end this way.

Aloha Kakahiaka and happy day off for those who have one!

Good rest and healing and happy bye week to our Warriors!

Yesterday was blest by being surrounded by Kymry and a high-powered gang of ladies who kept the day happy and undepressed. Having breakfast bought by #1 son who joined us for the first half was a highlight too. Mr. Kymry politely left for another part of the room to share his inner f-bombs with un-giggly fans.

One is never tested beyond one’s capacity.

I had to dash early to attend a funeral so that kinda kept everything in perspective.

    GO Warriors!

  14. Shoko November 7, 2010 6:09 am

Colorado’s Dan Hawkings walking papers might be in the works. Looks grim that Hawkings will ever see the PAC-12. Will he be gone before the season ends? Perhaps like Tim Brewster?

If there were any questions about the job status of Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, a 52-45 loss to Kansas probably has answered them. The Buffaloes took a 45-17 lead early in the fourth quarter on Rodney Stewart’s 8-yard touchdown run. But from there it went downhill quickly. The Jayhawks, who entered averaging just 16.1 points per game, scored five consecutive touchdowns in the final quarter, including a 28-yard run by James Sims with one minute left that proved to be the winning score.

  15. Garret November 7, 2010 6:09 am

I finished gathering all the quotes from the game…that was painful to read.

  16. Garret November 7, 2010 6:10 am

The new Sagarin rankings are out:

    10. BSU

    25. Nevada

    36. UH

    60. Fresno State

    102. Utah State

    104. La Tech

    113. Idaho

    148. NMSU

    163. SJSU

    140. UNLV

All 5 of the teams that UH plays in nonconference games this season lost yesterday. UH being as high as #36 in Sagarin is really good considering that. I also agree with what CRW posted yesterday about the Sagarin.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt10.htm

  17. Garret November 7, 2010 6:14 am

I hope that Spencer Smith gets fully healed during the bye week. He was a true Warrior and came back as soon as the doctors let him, but his forearm just wasn’t ready.

  18. mctruck November 7, 2010 6:24 am

TCU and BSU, both showed in my opinion that they played like they belonged in a BCS conference….top tier to boot.

Has UH ever beaten BSU?, hell yeah!!, so not this year or last year…but again this year they had too much for our WARRIORS to deal with on both sides of the ball. This year both TCU and BSU were in a class all by themselves……the irony is that the BCS voters will try their best to keep either one from playing for the national championship game; I wouldn’t be surprised to see both undefeated teams grouped together again in a lesser bowl playing against each other like last year.

Wonder if Colorado is thinking bout making coach Petersen an offer he can’t refuse???

  19. Garret November 7, 2010 6:24 am

My mistake–USC won yesterday on a last-minute FG. Army, Colorado, Charleston Southern and UNLV lost.

  20. Garret November 7, 2010 6:26 am

    mctruck,

The BCS bowl system cannot group TCU and BSU into a BCS bowl this year. The highest-ranked non-AQ school will automatically go to the Rose Bowl if a Pac-10 (Oregon) or Big 10 team is in the national title game. So, if Oregon runs the title, it will be TCU vs. the Big 10 champion in the Rose Bowl.

Hawkins will remain the coach until end of the season. Cody Hawkins is the only QB on scholorship.

The AD is who has to be in question for his decision making by extending hawkins contract earlier.

They will have plenty of choices by December of who will be their next head coach if they don’t choose the former coach Mac

  23. CoolEthan November 7, 2010 6:33 am

Would really like to see Boise in the Rose Bowl just for that enviroment and matchup against the Big 10.

There fan support needs to be in either Phoenix or S.Calif.

  24. puuloke November 7, 2010 6:51 am

If Oregon, Auburn, TCU and Boise win out, would only be right that #1 plays the higher of TCU and Boise, and the lower AQ take on the other non -AQ. After those games, chose a national champion. Hey, just like basketball’s Final Four!

  25. Hank November 7, 2010 6:55 am

    Some random thoughts…

-Our Defense played their GUTS out.

-Their Defense won the game, and the tape of the game should be kept as a learning tool for us. They really know how and when to overload one side and get pressure.

-I wonder what Coach Rolo is thinking….

-Our Special Teams continue to show improvement.

    – BS going no huddle to unbalance our defensive posture was great coaching (do you think they watched the Colorado tape?)…

    – I think UH should take that WILDCAT REVERSE that Boise took for a 14-yard TD and ADD IT TO THEIR PLAY BOOK.

    – I’ll miss watching the Warriors play BS – they’ve been a measure of how good we are and where we need to improve.

    – More than any other game – our O-line Coaches can use this game as a learning tool to help in future match ups against teams with physical front lines.

-Can’t believe Kellen Moore is 6 feet tall…he looked like 6-5 yesterday.

-Hilo fans are proud of Mana…

  26. konagirl November 7, 2010 6:56 am

    Crystal Ball…and wish list…

    Hawaii wins their remaining games

Fresno beats Nevada (I like Pat Hill much more than Ault)

    Boise beats Fresno

Nevada beats Boise (The Pack takes full advantage of the home field)

La Tech comes through with a victory over Nevada (leaving them 6-2 along with Fresno)

Hawaii (7-1) shares the WAC championship with Boise (7-1)

Boise plays in the Humanitarian Bowl as #19

Hawaii finishes the season at #25 and a victory in the Hawaii Bowl

Moniz returns for his senior year!

  27. Hank November 7, 2010 6:56 am

…would like to see BSU and Oregon for the National Championship…

…Oregon, BSU and TCU are the three best IMHO….

Hi, all I figured I’d come here to gain a bit of support. I’m on day one quitting with the patch. I’m sure some of you will tell me you have to cold turkey it and that may be but right now all i could bring myself to do is patch it and I hope I will be successful. My head is in the right place. I want to stop. I just can’t bring myself to get off nicotine in one fell swoop. Anyway, one questions is very concerning to me. One of the main reasons I quit smoking was due to breath issues.

  30. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 7:05 am

  35. expat November 7, 2010 7:26 am

11-3. Whomever we play in the Hawaii Bowl should be a fairly even match.

It is sometimes hard as Hawaii fans to be truly appreciative of how far Boise State has come in their time since moving up from 1-AA. They aren’t even the flagship state institution but they have built an incredible football program that just rolls on through coaching changes on all levels. They have not really had any reload years along the way– not at least by normal expectations.

The Warriors have had a great season so far. No shame in losing to a better team in their house. The Colorado loss was harder to take for sure.

What will be hard is if we drop any of the last three games. We have three of the worst teams in the nation coming up.

  36. gigi-hawaii November 7, 2010 7:37 am

I hope we get to play SMU in the Hawaii Bowl — just for sentimental reasons!

It will be thrilling to see JJ pitted against Rolo, for instance.

  40. johnp November 7, 2010 7:49 am

That was a good team we played yesterday. Hopefully things are in motion so we can be like Boise State Imua Warrios! Enjoy the rest of the 2010 season and play hard! We’ve been on a great ride so far this year!

  41. kama krab November 7, 2010 7:53 am

    Howzit Everybody,

    Expat #35,

I don’t expect any of the next three games to even be close. I am not saying this to be over confident, I say this because it seems like this team has gotten over the hump with respect to trap games. The mentality alone of this team is just different. Yes we got our butts handed to us yesterday but this team still wants to win as many games as they possibly can. Thus I feel that Hawaii will be 10-3 going into the Hawaii Bowl christmas eve.

  44. kama krab November 7, 2010 8:02 am

As stated in my last post,

The ride will go on. The Boise game was just a little bump in the road. This version of Hawaii football has really got me believing that this program may be turning the corner with Mack at the helm. After watching Hawaii beat Fresno and Nevada in back to back weeks and then going to Utah State and dismantling them, I new then, we where in for a good ride. From then I new that trap games at least for this season was a thing of the past.

My only worry is making this type of season the norm and not just a once every two years deal. In order for us to see greener pastures hawaii will need to win and win often.

This has been a great ride and the ride will continue for the rest of this season. I just hope that the ride will continue for years to come.

    kama krab,

With good use of the bye week I am also thinking that the remainder of the regular season should be very manageable.

Given that, I was saying yesterday that I would like to see QB1 get some PT with some of the younger receivers.

  51. Pomai November 7, 2010 8:13 am

Even winning yesterday an BSu drop in both polls. They do not want a WAC team to be in the NC game period. I don’t think that TCU is better that BSu

  52. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 8:17 am

I read somewhere that SMU isn’t expected to come back-to-back to Hawaii for a bowl game. Something about not expecting their fans to shell out the money to go to Hawai two years in a row. I think they’ll end up playing in a bowl closer to their home area.

Same here. I kinda want to see our 1st team play for the first half of each remaining regular season game, and take it from there. If we’re ahead comfortably, then let others get some much needed reps. Let our 1’s continue resting up, and then explode during our bowl game.

  55. gigi-hawaii November 7, 2010 8:21 am

    M. Warrior,

too bad! But, think how a SMU-UH bowl game would be really hyped up!!! Such a match up would be so entertaining and exciting.

    Pomai…

    UH….SJSU

    42 – 3 Michigan Warrior

By the way, did everyone overbid for this past game? Is the prize rolling over to the Bowl game?

  57. Committed Road Warrior November 7, 2010 8:27 am

    Michigan Warrior:

The Armed Forces Bowl is being played in SMU’s home stadium this year since TCU’s stadium (where the bowl is usually held) will begin undergoing much-needed renovations once the regular college football season ends.

Given that the Armed Forces Bowl is matching up teams from C-USA and the Mountain West, I think the push is to have SMU play in this bowl game if they become bowl eligible and don’t end up winning the C-USA Championship (and the resultant Liberty Bowl bid).

  58. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 8:28 am

Yeah, Gigi… they were hoping for it last year, but it didn’t happen since we lost our last regular season game and ended up not qualifying.

I think we’d roll if we played them this year.

Kinda already getting excited for next year… and yet we haven’t even finished up here yet.

Lots of positives to look forward to in many sports. Just hope the WAC does the right things for this conference. Now that he won’t have to worry about BSU, maybe Benson will go back to taking care of the conference again.

I told you guys the pollsters would try to push VT up higher, even with them struggling against a mediocre Georgia Tech team.

The Big East is in even worse position. Pitt is the front-runner in conference. Their last win was against a junk Louisville team… that same junk Louisville team that just beat second-place Big East “power” Syracuse.

Voters are pushing a bunch of ACC teams into to bottom end of the polls, since there’s no Big East teams worth anything. Pretty stupid that one BCS game will feature an unranked Big East Chumpion, when there are far more deserving teams from non-AQ conferences. Such are the rules.

I don’t see how Auburn solidified it’s position by allowing D-IAA Chattanooga to score 24 points. A team with a strong enough defense that can tackle can give Auburn a loss.

TCU’s dismantling of Utah at Utah was more of a surprise than Boise’s dominating win over a visiting Hawaii team, and yet Utah only fell 10 spots in the polls, while Hawaii basically fell off of the edge of the earth. Only way to change perception is for the rest of the conference to start winning those OoC games.

  69. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 8:58 am

Weirder thing… both Reno AND Fresno have more points than we do in the polls, and yet be beat both of them!

  70. LizKauai (iPad) November 7, 2010 9:09 am

    Pomai:

    56-3 LizKauai

  71. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 9:11 am

I might be wrong, but with Reno losing key personnel to graduation this year, I don’t think they’ll be the team to beat next year.

Similarly, Fresno loses a bunch on defense, plus their line of both sides of the ball. Also graduating will be their QB and a couple of RB’s.

As long as we can shore up our O- and D-Lines, and get our receivers on the same page with Moniz, I think we could be top dog next year.

Wondering how LaTech, Utah State, and Idaho will look next year too. We’ll have a long trip to LaTech next year, but at least most tougher games will be at home. Gonna have to make a statement against Colorado too. Gotta be ready as soon as the season starts.

  72. gigi-hawaii November 7, 2010 9:16 am

We play Nevada in Nevada next year. However, they will have a new QB, so we have a good chance to win.

  73. MattO November 7, 2010 9:28 am

Michigan – when it comes to 20 and under, most voters don’t care and don’t check who beat whom. Nevada at 21 is a lie. And Fresno getting more points is just plain daffy.

In fact, Utah being ranked #5 last week was an even bigger lie!

    Check this out:

TCU thumps Utah and it’s hailed as a big achievement. Okay, let’s take a look at who Utah has beaten. 1st game: Pitt who was then ranked #15 at the time. Pitt has since lost to unranked ND and Miami (FL). Since beating Pitt, Utah has beaten all unranked teams: UNLV (1-8), New Mexico (1-8), SJS (1-8), Iowa St (5-5), Wyoming (2-8), Colorado St (3-7), Air Force (6-4). They’re opponents have a combined win-loss ratio of: 19-48. Iowa St is probably the best on the list and even they’ve proven to be erratic.

    So why were they #5?

  74. kama krab November 7, 2010 9:30 am

The reason that Fresno and Nevada are ahead are because of there records. I highly expect Hawaii to be in front of Fresno and maybe just behind Nevada at the end of the season. Could that mean being ranked? At this time, I really don’t think so, but we could be real close if we win out.

I think we should be able to win out the regular season and have a chance to win the Hawaii Bowl no matter who we play. 11-3 is not such a bad record and does deserve national consideration. We will just have to wait and see.

  75. Pomai November 7, 2010 10:00 am

Feeling pretty bummed about our recent game, but at the same time feeling extremely optimistic about the future. As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. With that being said, we have a fairly new coach…things are getting better every year. In time our ship WILL roll in…I BELIEVE!!!

Whitey K State took down a struggling Texas team, now coach Snyder is bringing respectability back to Manhattan. When a team like Texas is down, a team got to take advantage of the situation and K State did that yesterday.

UH had the same opportunity at Colorado but unfortunately the Warriors did not capitalize on Colorado’s missteps this season.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…nice sunny day….

Interesting comments about how SMU is not interested in coming over for the Aloha Bowl.

Now thery are in a position to dictate what bowl they would like to go to…?..After …20 some years of anonimity, they now want to dictate….very interesting.

Kazz…re Na Wahine pitchers…I was looking for some different pitches from them, not just heat and location. Thus my comment on improving and needed work. D1 hitters will be able to zone in on heat and location. The scrimmage should be used to try new things, players and concepts, either offensive or defensive. It was good to see the new team and players who will be the differnce makers. J-Rod and Makani look like they could be used for situational pitching. Loved Makani’s change…batters could throw out their backs if not careful!…LOL!

Boise State handed the Warriors the same beating as Georgia Bulldogs did in the Sugar Bowl in 2007. Colt was swamped, had no chance to pass, just like Mo Moniz was zapped. Really nothing to be ashamed of. Boise and K. Moore deserve to go to the BCS championship game. I don’t see any team be it Auburn, Oregon, TCU, being better than they are. The Warriors will recover and be okay. But cheating Boise out of the championship BCS game is not okay.

Bloggers please don’t think I’m Benedict Arnold. But I got to give the devil his due. Boise State is the best. Since Chris Peterson took over in 2006, they have been great every year. So Auburn and Oregon state is ahead of Boise in the BCS standings. What has Auburn been doing since 2006? What has Oregon been doing since 2006? So Auburn has this fantastic year and Oregon has this fantastic year but their no where close to what Boise has done since 2006. It would be a crime, an outright crime to deny Boise the championship game. Our Warriors are okay. Moniz is classy and will get right back on his feet and be fantastic! We will be treated to a great pre Christmas game. But it bothers me as a fan of football what is happening to Boise.

    Northshorefan,

Depends on what Kliebenstein, Smith, and Enrique are calling plus what Coolen expects.

Coolen likes his pitchers to got inside and out left to right of the plate not much high or low movement.

It was against Chaminade so at the D2 level against our D1 pitchers there is not much Ricketts or Parnaby had to do to get the Ks. No need for Ricketts and Parnaby to bust out all their pitches.

Once the season starts the fastballs, drops, screws, risers, offspeed stuff will really come out as our fellow D1 opponents are more versitile.

I don’t know what type of cancer Kelly Majam has. I pray it goes away. But if she has to undergo treatment, I rather see her sit out this year and take care of her health. Her life is more important than any game. TCU couldn’t carry Boise’s jock straps. How did that dirty chop blocking team leap frog over Boise to take the #3 spot? Boise could beat them one hand tied behind their back.

  104. kev-1 November 7, 2010 12:19 pm

#99 Rupert . . . I agree. Boise is one darn good football team. Thing is, I thougth UH was too. I know it is a loss to one of the best teams in the country, but UH looked like they didn’t even belong on the same field. It was a chance to prove the nay-sayers wrong and earn a little respect, at least with a decent showing. But no. Not even close.

Unfortunately, this performance makes me think that staying in the watered down WAC is in the best interest of the University. I have always favored going indy, or at least courting another conference, but to do that UH needs to show that they can compete with top notch teams. This season against the three respectable teams (USC, CU, BSU), UH looked bad. That doesn’t bode well for the program.

Don’t get me wrong, I still think the Warriors are a good team, and I am not down on them at all. Boise is on a different level than we are, and have been for years. It is time for UH to jump to that level. Maybe a few years in a weak WAC to develop a winning menatlity is the right medicine?

  105. kev-1 November 7, 2010 12:24 pm

As for my thoughts regarding yesterdays loss . . .

Why doesn’t UH’s offense try to run the no-huddle on their opponents? If it works so well against us, wouldn’t it work against others?

The defense was too conservative. Too often I saw a defender with a clear lane at the QB, but just stood there looking afraid to pressure. I don’t know if that is assignment or not, but it was clear on more that a few occasions, that the d-line was content holding the line of scrimmage instead of pressuring Moore.

If something doesn’t work for a half of football, offensively and defensively, you have to make adjustments. None were made yesterday by UH and that is discouraging.

    BLITZ for C______ sake!

Okay, pau. Nuf negative. On the positive side, the team gets some much needed rest.

  106. konagirl November 7, 2010 12:26 pm

Let’s all face it, the BCS is a money making SCAM…not even the NFL has rankings…it’s a JOKE whether you think Boise is the best or not. The teams with the best records at the end of the season should play each other, just like the NFL. Standings by division, league and conference based only on a Win-Loss record…not strength of schedule, computers, voters, etc. Can you imagine if the SuperBowl was based on votes and opinions?!?! It’s all opinion based with the BCS when it should be based on win or lose. Again, it’s a JOKE and I’m so sick of it. Playing for the National Championship is no longer the honor it once was…it’s no longer “may the best team win.” I’d love to see a true playoff system where the winner really wins!

  108. RupertDaStupert November 7, 2010 12:44 pm

#Kev-1, it was disappointing losing to Boise. In the 1960’s, UH was almost a club team. Even thought of dropping football. In UH history, they never even came close to a national title. SMU has. Army has. The only sport in UH history that won a national title was of course Dave Shoji and the Rainbow Wahines. We went to only one College World series in rainbow baseball history. The Derek Tatsuno year. We never came close to winning a national title in basketball. We’re geologically in a unique position. It’s hard to recruit the 4-5 star recruits like USC, Notre Dame, Texas does to create a super team. Boise is the freak. No name but yet able to recruit the best. No great athlete wants to be recruited to an Island in the middle of the pacific. We will never get that super team without being able to compete with other colleges for the 4-5 star athletes. In sports that has 5 – 6 starters, you can get away with recruiting 2 great super athletes. In football, you can’t. With 11 on offense and 11 of defense, it would take more than a handful of super athletes to be great. So frustrating as it is, it will be status quo without the horses to gallop. We will continue to be “the little engine that could” just like Gonzaga “the little school that could” shows up for basketball post game series year after year. Even our state’s best players, leave the Islands for mainlad schools.

It astounds me that Nevada, Alabama, New Mexico, even Wyoming do not have pro sports in football, basketball or baseball. Las Vegas got rich entrepreneurs, to make it happen. Even Reno has the facilities and rich benefactors to support a pro team. We tried with “The Hawaiians” of the old World Football League. We tried with the “The Hawaii Leis” of the pro tennis league. We tried with “The Hawaii Chiefs” of the old ABL started by Abe Saperstein of the Harlem Globetrotters. We tried with the “Hawaii Islanders” of the old Pacific AAA Coast League. Fan support was low, the cost to fly the teams to Hawaii and the mainland was costly, (can you imagine the air transportation now in our bad economic times today), so pro sports failed here in Hawaii and I don’t think any entrepreneur will ever try to bring pro sports here. The UH is our “pro” sports. It would be nice for another local college to create football to make a rivalry with UH. But if you really like your pro sports, you have to transfer to the mainland. It is what it is.

    RupertDaStupert:

It’s all about recruiting and putting more into it. We are what we are..and having said that, I still think this team is worthy of being within the top 30. Considering all the conditions you stated, that’s pretty good. Considering where we were two years ago, that’s remarkable. Obviously we need to focus our efforts on recruiting even more. The conference reshuffling isn’t helping us much, though.

But we now have an upgraded athletics facility. We will have new turf in Aloha before next season. The recruits that visit this year will see a better equipped, modern and cleaner facility. Next year, even more so. We have the foundations in the making and, what I believe to be, a good coaching situation.

10-3, 11-3… both sound great to me.

We loss to Boise and I really feel badly for our player. I hope that the Coaches will study the tape not to review it for the boys but more so to review it to come up with strategies for the future and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Making sure, the next time, we have a fighting chance.

    I am a Warrior fan..

    This is my team

To be a non-AQ school and frequently hovering near or within the top 25, I think shows that we are making progress. We just need to keep getting better each game.. each off season.. each summer.. each year.

  115. kama krab November 7, 2010 1:12 pm

    Here’s the thing,

Not even Boise gets the 4-5 star players. They get the same type of players we do year in and year out. The thing that sets us apart is the winning mentality. That is what has been consistent with Boise since they have become D-1. Actually, the winning mentality has been with Boise since they started playing football. This is one thing that Hawaii lacks. Yes, we have winning season but the mentality does not stick. The reason for this is everyone in the state is not all in. In Boise, Boise football is king. It’s Boise football and nothing else. They eat, sleep, and crap football. This is what Hawaii desperately lacks. Until everyone gets on the same page, Hawaii will continue to be in the same position.

  116. madeinhawaii November 7, 2010 1:13 pm

But then… 10 weeks without a bye if pretty darn long.

  117. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 7, 2010 1:13 pm

I have to agree that UH should stay in the WAC even if its a very watered down conference onoce Div 1-aa schools come in. Boise has consistently been a BCS-level school stuck in a Mid-major conference while Hawaii is a really solid Mid-major school, but not much more than that.

In the WAC with no real competition, we will take the conference title year in and out. We will also have to get some big name schools like BYU and USC to continue to schedule us so that we can make money of ticket sales. I don’t want to think what attendance will be like against a Montana or Texas San Antonio.

The goal year in and year out should be 2 things, win the conference, get a bowl invite. Forget about Top 25, dont dream of another BCS bowl anytime soon. Unless every out of conference game is to a BCS team, the newly formed WAC will put us below the CUSA in terms of conference respectability and we are not going to be getting much national exposure. Remember, even with Boise in here now we aren’t getting much respect as a Conference. Kinda sad and unfair dont you think.

  118. Garret November 7, 2010 1:14 pm

So, BSU blew out UH…and went from 69 points ahead from the voters to 10 points behind TCU from the voters. Because of the bad SOS in the WAC, BSU was behind TCU in the BCS standings even when they were 69 points ahead with the voters. With TCU ahead with the voters, BSU is far, far behind TCU.

So, if TCU wins out (which is extremely likely), then BSU basically has no chance at the national title game and BSU has to beat out the second place Big 12 and Pac-10 teams for the final BCS bowl spot.

  119. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 7, 2010 1:15 pm

    @ Kama krab,

Chris Peterson says he never pays attention to 4star 5star ratings etc…They also talked about the players having some kind of veto authority over recruits.

    Very interesting.

  120. Garret November 7, 2010 1:17 pm

    RupertDaStupert,

I wouldn’t call TCU dirty for using chop blocks…since UH uses chop blocking now, it is hard to label that as dirty play.

  121. kama krab November 7, 2010 1:18 pm

The one thing that I do see from this team is, things may be turning the corner. We may be getting close to realizing that winning mentality. We may be building a solid program. If we are able to string together 2-3 10-11 win season, we may be able to get to where everyone wants us to be and that is on top. June was trying to build that type of mentality but kept being pushed aside. With Uncle Jim at the helm of the program, I think we have the right person to make this football program what it needs to be. Whether Mack is still the head coach or they decide to good in another direction, we will become the next Boise.

  123. Garret November 7, 2010 1:27 pm

Remember, even with Boise in here now we aren’t getting much respect as a Conference. Kinda sad and unfair dont you think.

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

I really don’t see what is *unfair* about the lack of respect the WAC has gotten. If you look at nonconference records over the last 2 years, last 3 years, last 4 years, or last 10 years, the WAC is the #8 conference in the country. In fact, the MWC is *far* above the WAC in nonconference play. And this is with BSU going undefeated in nonconference play almost every year!

The WAC *lost* its respect on the field. Let us face the facts so that we can understand the problem and look for solutions. We CANNOT ignore the fact that the WAC lost its respect on the field. I’ve pointed out the horrible nonconference records of the WAC for years, which is important because the other WAC teams getting killed in nonconference play has cost UH in terms of respect and in $$$ because $9 million in BCS money to the non-AQ conferences is split up based on which conferences win the most in nonconference play.

The MWC on the other hand has done BY FAR the best in nonconference play for all the non-AQ conferences. They have had years where they have had winnings records against the Pac-10, with even their bottom dwelling teams beating Pac-10 teams. You think that the WAC ever came close to doing that? You can also look at basketball where the MWC gets more teams into the NCAA tournament than the Pac-10, getting double the teams that the WAC gets.

If the perception went against what happened on the field or on the basketball court, I’d say that things were unfair. But the WAC lost the games and earned its reputation. If the bottom dwellers like NMSU don’t stop cutting their Athletic Budget, the WAC won’t ever get better. While SDSU raised its Athletic Budget by $5+ million recently, NMSU cut $3 million…and SDSU already spent something like $10 million more! The results show up on the field–SDSU is no longer a bottom dweller.

When BSU leaves, the WAC payout due to BCS money will go way down. Not only won’t BSU be giving the WAC $3 million to split up anymore, if the WAC falls behind C-USA in nonconference record then the WAC will lose a lot of its share of that $9 million from the BCS.

  124. RupertDaStupert November 7, 2010 1:27 pm

MadeinHawaii and Kama Crab, you both make good points. But in our 100 plus years of UH Manoa history, we have not come close to a NCAA football title. We had great All-Americans dating back to the turn of the century. But it takes 11 great ones on offense and 11 great ones on defense. Yes, your right Kama Crab, we have to eat, sleep and c ap football and we as a state we do not. I don’t know all the answers. But its astounding none of our UH teams in football, baseball or basketball “the big sports so to speak” has not won a NCAA national title. We’re probably the only Div-1 team that never won a national title in football, basketball or baseball at one time in its history. Unless that div-1 team was newly created. But for div-1 team going back a 100 years, it’s pretty incredible counting some of the great All-Americans we’ve had in each sport.

This i don’t understand. If Boise loses spots for beating weak opponents, how the F_____ does Nevada continue to climb?

  126. Garret November 7, 2010 1:33 pm

The one thing that I do see from this team is, things may be turning the corner. We may be getting close to realizing that winning mentality. We may be building a solid program. If we are able to string together 2-3 10-11 win season, we may be able to get to where everyone wants us to be and that is on top. Whether Mack is still the head coach or they decide to good in another direction, we will become the next Boise.

I completely agree with kama krab’s post here. UH needs to string together 3 straight good years to be ready for the next round of conference realignment (the time for the next AQ evaluation period means that the next invitations could occur in 2-3 years). UH needs to do so and *can* do so.

The big problem is that beating bottom dwellers like NMSU and SJSU can actually *drop* UH in the computer standings. So, UH loses BCS points for blowing out conference opponents. When the D-IAA teams join, they will count as D-IAA teams for at least one year…and that year will be a year where UH will need to be racking up BCS points. It is *impossible* to rack up BCS points when a schedule includes 3-4 teams (4 teams if Montana joins the WAC) that are classified as D-IAA schools.

Think about that for a second. In 2012 UH will need to rack up BCS points, but up to *4* teams that UH plays that season will be classified as D-IAA teams. UH can only count 1 win out of those 4 games towards bowl eligibility, but all losses count of course. That shouldn’t affect UH much, but the rest of the WAC6 might find it impossible to become bowl eligible because they play so many bodybag games that are automatic losses in nonconference play.

  127. RupertDaStupert November 7, 2010 1:33 pm

Okay Garret, I may have over reached by calling TCU a dirty team for using chop blocking. Its wrong to misdirect my anger at TCU for leap frogging Boise State. kev-1,

I just checked the computer polls and I think you should notice that Nevada DROPPED also. Nevada *blew out* Idaho 63-17…but last week they were #24 in Sagarin’s BCS rankings and this week they were #25. They DROPPED after winning 63-17 against a WAC team that could go to a bowl game. They are lucky they didn’t play NMSU or SJSU because they would probably have dropped out of the top 25 in the BCS computers.

    RupertDaStupert,

UH plays in a conference that is #8 or worse in the country every season. That is *not* a huge draw for recruits and means that the conference is not attractive to TV networks…which also hurts recruiting.

Money is also a big factor. WAC schools (aside from BSU, Fresno, Nevada, and UH) generally spend very, very little on Athletics. That results in losses, which results in a lack of respect for the conference, which hurts recruiting and TV. Also, WAC schools like Idaho, NMSU, SJSU, etc., play numerous bodybag games where they get $1 million to help keep their athletic department afloat but they lose badly and hurt the conference. Every nonconference WAC loss either directly or indirectly costs UH money–BCS payout based on conference wins in nonconference play, computer rankings, TV attractiveness for the conference, etc.

The WAC is a conference of leftovers because their teams generally have no option to go anywhere else. La Tech would leave for C-USA or the MWC in a second. BSU begged to go to the MWC for a bigger challenge. Fresno/Nevada left. UH begged the MWC to take them years ago and consistently undermined the stability of the WAC by doing so. Some programs spend the money needed and have the focus to improve their programs, which results in their getting invitations to go elsewhere.

UH might have been able to set themselves up to have the BCS points needed to make the MWC an AQ conference. But UH had a horrible AD before JD took the job and he set UH back at least 10 years…possibly forever. Winning *now* doesn’t count as much as winning in 2008/2009. That is sad, but true. If 2006/2007 had happened in 2008/2009, UH would have been invited along with BSU to the MWC and the MWC would have the BCS needed to automatically become an AQ conference…even without Utah and BYU.

We can’t do anything about the past and JD and Mack have the reins for UH’s future. JD tripled the recruiting budget, paid for a full-time recruiting coordinator, raised assistant coach salaries, and helped oversee a HUGE upgrade of UH facilities. Mack has delivered the wins on the field for UH. UH is on the right track…you don’t go from 2008/2009 to winning a national title in 1 year. First UH needs to win the WAC, then UH needs to win the WAC consistently (or go indy and win 10 games that way), and slowly build to the point where UH surpasses what BSU has now. UH has a bigger football stadium than BSU, far more local TV money than BSU, and a great facility for basketball/volleyball. UH needs a decade of winning on the field and the dedication and commitment off the field to build itself into a power.

If that does not happen, UH will far further and further behind as teams in other conferences have so much more TV money, bowl money, and everything else that will eventually be too much to overcome if UH doesn’t do something about it NOW.

  137. Garret November 7, 2010 1:54 pm

Garret – I hadn’t seen any of the BCS computer polls yet. I was referring to the AP and USA polls.

    kev-1,

The AP and USA polls are simple to understand–Nevada has *1* loss and almost all the teams near the bottom in the top 25 seem to be losing each week. So, Nevada moves up a little each week. However, Nevada’s drop in the computers might more than make up for that.

It really doesn’t matter much because BSU will beat Nevada and then Nevada will drop out of the top 25 also. The only reason Nevada doesn’t have 2 losses already is because they haven’t played BSU yet.

  138. d1島 November 7, 2010 1:58 pm

…and then again U. of South Florida was founded in the 1960’s and started playing football in the 90’s.

  139. Garret November 7, 2010 2:10 pm

    Nonconference play:

SJSU 1-4 (only win against D-IAA, they also lost to D-IAA UC-Davis)

NMSU 1-3 (only win was against New Mexico, rated below most D-IAA schools)

La Tech 1-3 (only win against D-IAA)

Utah State 2-2 (wins over BYU and a D-IAA team)

Idaho 3-2 (wins against North Dakota, UNLV, Western Michigan)

UH 2-2 (wins over Army and a D-IAA team)

If you look at the WAC6, the only nonconference wins are BYU, UNLV, Western Michigan, New Mexico, Army, and a bunch of D-IAA teams. All teams in the top half of the D-IA rankings beat the WAC6. Colorado is 0-5 in the Big 12…those types of losses hurt the WAC6’s respect.

Just remember in the future that every nonconference loss by a WAC team costs UH money. UH is reliant on its conference members winning nonconference games to help build the conference…and every bodybag game that Idaho, Utah State, SJSU, La Tech, and NMSU takes (and they all take bodybag games and they lost every single one of them over the past 10 years) makes them a nice paycheck but it costs UH money. UH is the *only* member of the WAC6 that refuses to take bodybag games (turning down $1 million from Big 10 and SEC teams)…but everybody else taking those games hurts the WAC and UH.

  140. Garret November 7, 2010 2:14 pm

Okay, I’m done ranting now. I just wanted to explain that there is nothing “unfair” about the lack of respect the WAC has gotten when you look at the results on the field. And when you look at the Athletic budgets of the WAC6 vs. the 3 schools that are leaving, you notice that there is a *huge* difference except where UH is concerned (and a lot of UH’s spending is on travel that doesn’t help build the athletic programs). The schools that don’t want to spend the money, that don’t want to try to improve, tend to sink a conference.

  141. RupertDaStupert November 7, 2010 2:17 pm

Garret, Intelligent take you made. The former athletic director HF did take Hawaii UH back almost 20 years. And his negligence to reward JJ with a new contract before 2007 was up was responsible for UH losing JJ to SMU. Although 2 million offered by SMU did not hurt. Texas will soon get $30 million in TV money

Big 12 schools will get $20 million in TV money + what they get from their own networks (Oklahoma, A&M) or local TV deals

Big 10 teams got $22 million each in TV money last year and are expected to get $40 million each soon

SEC teams get $17 million each in TV money plus local TV deals (~$20 million on average per school)

Pac-12 teams will go from $7 million in TV money to $15 million to $20 million in TV money. That increased revenue will increase the gap between the Pac-12 and the MWC/WAC.

The MWC gets $1.3 million in TV money per school.

C-USA gets $1.2 million in TV money per school and that may increase to more than what the MWC gets because ESPN is giving them a raise in the extension they are negotiating. C-USA and BYU are getting a lot of the ESPN time slots that the WAC currently has.

UH gets $400k from the WAC TV deal and ESPN is about to cut its TV money with the WAC because BSU is leaving. ESPN already gave the time slots (and money) to BYU and is giving increased money and time slots to C-USA, so the WAC is going to have less visibility and money.

Something needs to happen soon or the financial gap will get much, much worse.

  145. wafan November 7, 2010 2:27 pm

“interesting” and unfortunate game yesterday on the blue turf. Must point out the smurf-turf looks very different in person rather than that almost glow-in-the-dark look we see on television. The white backing in the endzones and advertisements along the sidelines make the color contrast apparent. Truly, if anything, the Warriors had the camouflage advantage when wearing their whites.

  146. madeinhawaii November 7, 2010 2:29 pm

    RupertDaStupert:

At best we might rival BYU or BSU with winning teams but little national respect… that is until UH is part of the BCS. BUT to get there, UH itself must be upgraded. The entire campus needs a facelift among other things. It must match the other schools in the conference academically and otherwise. We are several steps behind in that sense, but. I suspect, ahead of most of the other WAC schools and many of the other non-AQ schools. Nothing a Billions bucks probably wouldn’t cure.

Fun flights from/to SEA and BOI surrounded by BSU fans. A few Warrior fans thrown in the mix, too. The BSU fans were really excited they were going to get to ride in the BSU logo marked plane — a prospect with which I was not too thrilled. Thankfully, we were directed to the first plane with the WSU logo. HA!

Was having thoughts of blue and orange on the outside and inside the plane. A bit overstated . . . you think?

  153. Pomai November 7, 2010 2:40 pm

My last comment on the previous game – I disagree with all of you who say BSu is better than us, yes they won yesterday and they won big, but it doesn’t make them better than us as a team, as a season, they where better than us on one given day. The key to yesterdays lost – watch the re-play, don’t watch the action watch the body language of the Warriors, they were not mentally into to the game from the get go, and that’s the reason they lost, the utmost important thing is for your head to be in the game or all else is for not. IMHO BSu didn’t beat us yesterday because the Warriors that we know where not there.

    A-House 11 – 3 isn’t to bad, we almost made it.

MadeinHawaii, very true what you said. Hawaii is hurting so much economically. JJ tried to ask the state legislatures for help to upgrade the UH facilities. I remember JJ saying he was embarrassed to show recruits the shabby locker room facilities, the athletic complex, etc. I doubt the state will throw much money to improve the athletic facilities due to the budget hurting. To make money, you gotta have money. Like going to a Las Vegas Casino. Because we’re an Island, we need the mainland more than it needs us. Producer Leonard Freeman (the creator of Five-O) and Jack Lord had to fight to keep Five-O in the Islands because CBS said it was too costly to film in Hawaii but luckily they prevailed.

  163. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 2:52 pm

I agree with Garret… just because we may be picking up a couple of Texas schools and Montana, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to be worse than C-USA. The only reason we’d be lower than C-USA is if we continue to lose nearly all of our OoC games. Every single WAC team must start winning these games in order for us to gain the notoriety that we crave.

We want respect and acknowledgement, and yet we lose head to head games against other non-AQ conferences. We can’t afford these kinds of losses more than anything else.

The Big East and ACC teams haven’t been doing as well as they have in years past. We may be forced to take those long road trips to the east coast to try to gain wins against bigger money schools.

Every WAC team must win as many OoC games as possible, every year… plain and simple.

  171. Michigan Warrior November 7, 2010 3:06 pm

#153… Pomai… yes, I mentioned some of that yesterday too. No matter what sport I played in while growing up, some games you just had more butterflies than other games. Sometimes, it takes getting into the game and getting popped a couple of times to turn on the fire and calm down. I recall a couple of games ago, Moniz said that he was nervous at the start of the game and his throws were a little off. Our offense was not clicking. After he scrambled and picked up a first down, he got up off of the turf all fired up. Our offense woke up after that.

If we think about it, we got three takeaways from them, and they got none from us. If we were able to move the ball and convert on third downs, the outcome would’ve been different!

I’d like to see us go to hurry up, no-huddle sometimes too. I’d also like to see us roll out the pocket once in a while, and not be stuck with a straight drop back. A few wrinkles can change a whole lot of stuff!

  172. Garret November 7, 2010 3:22 pm

    Pomai,

If we won’t give any credit to BSU like in #153, then can we really complain about some schools not giving UH enough credit after they lose to UH?

    UH vs. BSU

    2010: BSU won by 35

    2009: BSU won by 45

    2008: BSU won by 20

    2007: UH won by 12

    2006: BSU won by 7

    2005: BSU won by 3

    2004: BSU won by 66

    2003: BSU won by 17

    2002: BS won by 27

2005-2007 were close and UH finally won in 2007, but the games weren’t that close for the rest of the games. BSU has earned their respect on the field and their DL and OL won the war in the trenches…they were the better team yesterday by far. If UH hadn’t won the turnover battle (UH had several fumbles that all were recovered but could have easily been turnovers) or if BSU had left their starters in or kept throwing the ball (like what UH has been doing in their WAC blowouts, leaving the starters like Salas and Paredes in late in blowouts), the score would have been much, much worse.

JJ never asked the legislature for money for the AD. Even HF never asked anything from the legislature. At that time only the administration met with the legislature on budget matters and athletics was the last thing on their mind. HF was not allowed to meet with legislators. Because of autonomy when legislators asked questions of the UH administration the answer was it’s none of your business. The UH administration set priorities for the entire campus and didn’t believe the worn out baseball turf was one of them. I believe it was Brian Taniguchi who visited the baseball stadium who got the ball rolling on the new turf without any input from the UH administration. It wasn’t until the controversy that Colt Brennen raised about soap did the UH administration allow athletics to interact with the legislature. And we all know what happened after that. This is a story about protecting one’s turf and happens across the country.

Kahuku wants to sue? An infraction is an infraction, without pointing finger at who done it, it is Kahuku’s infraction and it is Kahuku that will be punished.

Have we forgotten Reggie Bush and USC? No bowls, loss of scholarships, embarrassment to the school and their faithful Alumnae. Is it possible that Kahuku is holding themselves to a higher order, that rules should do not apply to Kahuku because it is someone else’s fault not the team.

It is a team player who is the focal point of the rules violation, and his violation is a Kahuku High School violation. A player commits a rules violation during a game, let’s say holding, shall Kahuku question the referee’s call because the infraction was committed by a sub who rarely plays. It is an unfortunate situation but Kahuku is not the only school penalized in sports for rules violation and they won’t be the last.

Didn’t Abercrombie say that he was interested in looking at the possibility of getting legislation that might provide financing for the travel (air fare) costs of the University’s athletics program? as well as, possibly putting the stadium in UH’s hands. Thing is, if the stadium falls under UH’s authority who will have jurisdiction over it on a day to day basis? Upper campus? Or the Athletic Dept?

If Boise State wins out and does not go to a BCS bowl, much less the National Championship, it might just be the straw that breaks the BCS back. Think about it — they would have gone two straight seasons without a loss (a staggering 26-0) not counting this year’s bowl game and in that stretch they would have beaten both Oregon and TCU. If Oregon wins out they are pretty much assured of being in the Championship game and it could very well be Oregon-TCU the way things are going.

If you go back one more year BSU would be 38-1 with their only loss a one point bowl loss to TCU. Add one more win against Oregon to the list.

If the BCS freezes them out I think there will be significant pressure from certain members of congress who are already up in arms.

On the other hand I really think the Nevada game will be a significant challenge for them. Nevada has played them tight the past few years and Moch has the speed to make life difficult for Moore.

    Garret:

You have made many comments about how BSU is such a successful program and much is the effort of Peterson and his coaching staff.

On the other hand, you made many comments about commitments of other WAC schools to not take so many “body bag games” cause it ultimately affects the low conference rating and the monetary impact on UH.

Yet, you make no mention on why the UH football staff does not make the same commitment as BSU’s Peterson nor Benson’s failure to get the WAC members to make the same commitment to excellence so the WAC conference get get a larger share of the $9 million doled out to the non-AQ conferences. How many assistant coaches has Peterson lost in the last 5 years? We know the turnover at UH and it was reported that Cal Lee will be leaving once this season is over to go help brother Ron at Kalani.

Maybe Coach Mack and his staff is actually doing this, but I have not seen or heard any statements to this effect. Maybe Coach Mack has a short-term, mid-term and long-term football program goal(s) and decided not to publish it. Maybe if he did, the general public will be more favorable in their commitment to supporting his program after they have seen his plan. Princicple wise, it’s no different than a corporate plan. It has been reported that football coaching staff has a 5-year recruiting plan which indicates where their needs will be and perhpas palyers who may fill those slots. Maybe Coach Mack has no intention of extending after his 5 year contract is up. Did I miss something?

For the WAC, who the hell is going to listen to Benson? Individual schools are more concerned about their own cause rather than the conference and I don’t think Benson has inspired them to put the conference before their school.

    Am I wrong?

  199. kama krab November 7, 2010 6:54 pm

    Expat #195,

No doubt. It would look really bad if BSU did not at least make to a BCS bowl this year but that could become reality if there is enough BCS teams to fill the at-large slots. Like it has been mentioned before, the BCS will try it’s hardest to make sure a 2009 does not ever happen again. With the one lose teams beating each other though Boise may get into a BCS bowl, but to play for a championship would be an even bigger long shot due to the WAC holding Boise back.

This will continue to happen until there is a playoff system in place cause I think that now the MWC is becoming to be raided, there may not be enough power for an undefeated Boise to make a national championship out of the MWC either. That is just the way the big boys like it. Sad but very real.

  200. A-House November 7, 2010 7:00 pm

    Bulla:

If I heard correctly, the Gov-elect wants to make the UH “travel budget” a separate line item in the budget and not part of the UH budget.

Thus, I am thinking and that is dangerous, that a $2-3million line item in a multi-million dollar State budget will hardly be noticed; contrary, a several hundred million UH budget will be a red line item. Also, if this happens, upper campus cannot deny UHAD the travel funds as it would come direct from the State to UHAD. Will this sit well with upper campus? No idea.

This is where UHAD can use legislator’s support, individuals like K. Mark Takai, Jill Tokuda, etc., to make it happen. Hence, my earlier comment on the importance on whom gets elected.

  201. momona November 7, 2010 7:04 pm

#108 Rupert – correction, Derek Tatsuno was not part of the team almost won the College World Series. The star pitchers were freshman Chuck Crim and Bryan Duquette. Tatsuno left a year or two before.

UH has won national championships in volleyball. Interestingly, HPU has won national championships in volleyball, softball and basketball.

  202. Garret November 7, 2010 7:05 pm

If Boise State wins out and does not go to a BCS bowl, much less the National Championship, it might just be the straw that breaks the BCS back.

    expat,

In 2008, BSU went 12-0…and went to the Poinsettia Bowl instead of a BCS bowl because Utah used the higher SOS of the MWC to make a BCS bowl game. I don’t remember any national outcry. If Texas had lost the Big 12 title game to Nebraska (they came less than a second away from doing so), then TCU would have faced Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl (Big 12 champion goes there) and BSU would *not* have gone to a BCS bowl game in 2009…TCU used its higher SOS from the MWC to pass BSU in 2009 to get the automatic non-AQ spot.

So, the BCS system is lucky that Nebraska didn’t win the Big 12 title game, or BSU would have missed out on 2 straight BCS bowl games and would have been passed by TCU again this year. BSU could actually have missed 3 straight BCS bowl games even after going undefeated in 3 straight seasons!

By the way, UH going undefeated in the diluted WAC will *not* make a BCS bowl game unless the MWC champion loses a game. The SOS would kill the WAC champion in the future even worse than it has killed BSU in 2008-2010.

  203. Garret November 7, 2010 7:08 pm

    Rupert,

OldDiver is correct. The Legislature actually had those hearing with HF and McClain where the Legislature asked HF to provide a list of facilities that needed improving so they could give UHAD the money to take care of things. This would have been extra money, above what UHAD gets already. UH said *NO*. UH said that they would not provide a list for them to fund. UH clearly stated that UH wants autonomy over everything else.

So, even when the Legislature had its checkbook open and was ready to give UH the money, UH said no. This was *before* JJ left UH, but I’m sure he noted how UH wasn’t concerned about improving its Athletic Facilities.

Let’s root for Fresno St., Nevada, & Utah St. to beat Boise St. If that happen and UH win the rest of WAC game, UH can be co-champion. Go Bulldogs, Wolfpack, Aggies, & Warriors.

  208. Garret November 7, 2010 7:20 pm

    A-House,

BSU lost its defensive coordinator to Tennessee before this season. The defensive coordinator they had yesterday is in his first year of being a coordinator and their defense held UH to its fewest yards since VA was the coach. However, BSU hasn’t lost many assistant coaches because they have paid their assistant coaches about the average of what Pac-10 assistant coaches make…their assistant coaches were at Pac-10 levels even before their head coaches were the highest paid WAC coaches. For the record, I think that was the *only* assistant coach that BSU lost under Petersen–they ended up promoting someone from their staff to DC and they hired *Cal’s DC* to be an assistant coach for them to mentor their first-year DC.

JJ tried to get the assistant coach’s salaries increased, but HF never went along with it. JJ offered to *reduce* his salary to help the football program but HF refused. JD *did* increase the assistant coaches salary ranges significantly and they did get raises. That is a key to keeping coaches and to getting high quality replacements when coaches leave.

UH has seemed to have 1-2 coaches replaced every offseason under Mack and roles have been adjusted. The coaching staff hasn’t been perfectly set up yet for Mack’s liking, but I’m guessing that they are much closer now than they were in past years. Now my worry is that big-money offers will come for coaches like Rolo…but UH might have a year or two more before that happens.

Benson hasn’t made any statements that schools should not take bodybag games and Benson knows that some WAC members might not be able to afford to have football teams without the bodybag games. Frankly, right now Benson and the WAC are hoping to survive and they aren’t worried about teams taking losses in return for $1 million paychecks.

  209. Garret November 7, 2010 7:23 pm

If Fresno or Nevada beats BSU, that will do several bad things:

    1. It will insure that Fresno or Nevada will end the season in the top 25, and we know BSU will end the season in the top 25. That would actually be a HUGE boost for the MWC to become an AQ conference. Plus, it would keep UH out of the rankings because they won’t rank 3 WAC teams.

    2. It would cost UH between $300k and $500k in BCS money.

    3. It would give Nevada or Fresno the pleasure of also getting a shared WAC title.

  212. kama krab November 7, 2010 7:46 pm

I very highly doubt that anyone will beat Boise this season. Even a decent Nevada team at Nevada has very little chance of beating Boise as I see it right now. The only thing I think that is not set in stone is whether or not Boise will make a BCS game. Now that is yet to be seen. Everything else is pretty much set cause Boise does not beat itself and not very much teams can beat them.

  213. kama krab November 7, 2010 7:49 pm

It would be nice to be co-champions but second is not to bad either. Next year though, I expect Hawaii to challenge for a championship because Hawaii can beat everyone that is left in the conference whether we are playing them home or away. It will all come down to whether Hawaii wants to be champion or not.

  214. d1島 November 7, 2010 7:54 pm

At this point, I would put Reno upsetting B$-You in about the same category as Hawaii’s chances yesterday. But “that’s why they play the games” always lingers….

that said, I’m again stating that I’d like to see these last 3 games used as an extension of the “bowl season” opportunity.

Are there any other major goals left for this team to attain yet?

If not, hopefully the team can get back on track after the bye week and put themselves in a position to start substituting some of the receivers that QB1 will be throwing to next season.

(A-house will be happy. This is something for which he’s been clamoring for a long time…getting the back-ups ready.)

Unless I missed something, it makes more sense for QB1 to start getting accustomed to guys like Avery, Stutzmann, Ostrowski, etc. than it does for Austin to come in with these guys as a unit.

I’d love to see the offense rolling from Game 1 against CU next season.

Currently, there is no money in the State coffers and the public isn’t opening their purse strings, very understandably so. But just a handful of years ago, FIVE, the State had in excess of $300,000,000. Which would have been enough to do all the various public school’s repairs,e excluding UH. I have no idea how or where that surplus was spent.

But that just tells us that times will change.. we will have our up years and down years. During these lean times our priority may be to simply focus on the survival of our Warrior program. But those more affluent times are around the corner.. and with every drop there is always a greater surge to follow. At that time, let’s hope we have the right leaders in place.

Here is the State Senate lineup for the coming Session. The State House is not yet organized.

    Senate President: Shan Tsutsui (Maui)

Senate Ways & Means (money) Chair: David Ige (Pearl City/Upper Aiea) replaces Donna Mercado Kim. Donna has been named Vice President of the Senate and Chair of the Committee on Investigative Affairs + Tourism. I have no idea what the first part of the Committee means since that is a function of the Attorney General’s office and/or the State Auditor. Demoting Tourism from a stand-alone committee – see below – is really puzzling as well as potentially stupid.

Senate Judiciary & Labor Committee Chair: Clayton Hee, Kane`ohe/Kahuku. Clayton is not an attorney although he has chaired the Committee before. See below for comments about the former Chair, Brian Taniguchi. The Labor Committee was a stand-alone committee during the past two years but is no more.

Senate Education Chair: Jill Tokuda (Kane`ohe/Kailua). Unlike the last two years, lower and higher education will be in one committee rather than two separate committees. Jill is extremely knowledgeable about education issues in general, but there may be some signficant pressures on her to focus on the public schools.

Senate Economic Developmenf & Technology Chair: Carol Fukunaga (Makiki/Punchbowl/Ala Moana). This is the committee which oversees Aloha Stadium. She’s smart and very knowledgeable about economic development issues.

As of this writing, newly-elected Senator Glen Wakai (Kalihi-Aiea on both sides of the freeway including Aloha Stadium), a House member who moved up when Norman Sakamoto resigned to run for Lt. Governor, has not been given any leadership position.

Likewise as of this writing, newly-elected Senator Pohai Ryan (Waimanalo/Kailua), who replaced retiring Fred Hemmings, has not been given any leadership position.

Senator Brian Taniguchi (Manoa/McCully/Mo`ili`ili/Makiki) lost his chairmanship of the powerful Judiciary and Government Operations Committee and has not been given any other leadership position. He represents UH-Manoa and has been a powerful + very, very good friend over the years.

Senator Clarence Nishihara (Pearl City/Waipahu) lost his chairmanship of the Tourism Committee which is now included in Donna Kim’s new Committee and has not been given any other leadership position.

Senator Dwight Takamine lost the chairmanship of the stand-alone Labor Committee which is now tucked into the Judiciary Committee and has not been given any other leadership position.

The other 2011 Senate leaders are Brickwood Galuteria (Waikiki/Iwilei) who will be both Majority Leader and Chair of the Hawaiian Affairs Committee; Les Ihara (Palolo/Waikiki, Majority Floor Leader; Ron Kouchi (Kaua`i) Majority Caucus Leader; Suzanne Chun Oakland (Nu`uanu/Sand Island), Chair of the Human Services Committee and Will Espero (Ewa Beach/Waipahi/Ewa Plans), Chair of the Public Safety & Military Affairs Committee, Majority Whips. With the exception of the Majority Leader’s position, the other four positions are mostly honorary.

Abercrombie will appoint someone to fill Colleen Hanabusa’s remaining two years. The Democratic Party wil submit a list of at least three qualified candidates from which he will make his selection.

Again, the State House has not been organized. Will post that information as soon as it is released.

    OTHER ISSUES

The transfer of Aloha Stadium from the Department of Accounting & General Services to the University of Hawai`i System will require a specific bill coming from the Legislature. Neil cannot do it on his own own.

Frankly, it will require clear & unambiguous face-2-face meetings with UH-Manoa administrators and legislators about the future of Aloha Stadium as well as the school’s future in intercollegiate athletics before any changes will take place.

Similar meetings need to be set up with Andrew Aoki who has been appointed as Abercrombie’s Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of policy matters.

One of the recommendations which has been submitted to the Abercrombie Transition Team headed by Bill Kaneko and Andrew is that 1) a high-ranking staffer in the Governor’s office be hired to work directly with the University of Hawai`i System; and, 2) that UH System President Greenwood be invited to be part of the Governor’s new Cabinet.

With respect to funding capital improvements projects, the Department of Athletics facilities have seen significant increases in funding over the past three years and will continue to see more. CIP projects provide jobs – primarily in the construction industry – plus they are not huge financial commitments.

What will happen to the WAC and what decisions will be made by University as to what will happen next will have a HUGE impact on a lot of different funding issues.

That’s why it’s extremely important for those of us who support intercollegiate athletics programs at the University of Hawai`i speak up to the Athletics Department administration, to the UH-Manoa administration, to the Board of Regents, to our state legislators, to the intercoming Abercrombie Admininistration, and to our Congressional Delegation.

See – politics and sports may be strange bedfellows, but they do sleep together.

MADE IN HAWAII – Your #227. Construction projects are funded through the Capital Improvements Budget through the issuance of bonds and not through yearly tax & fee collections. The surplus to which you refer comes from taxes & fees.

The surplus was spent on paying for already-committed operating expenses – about 80% salaries, fringe benefits, retirement payouts, etc – because tax revenues fell signficantly as the economy went into the toto.

At least we didn’t spend it on a war or to bail out Wall Street.

If he wins out three of the next four games, he will have a winning record for his three years on board and be 2 wins over JJ’s first three years. He said he would bring back the RnS.. and he did that, too. Next season is what he has called his pay off season. It will be interesting to see, no doubt. Chances are we will have a winning season and a bowl game. But our OoC and Conference games may be of a lower grade with graduations within the ranks of our competitors galore.

What contracts he negotiates for his staff will probably determine whether or not Rolo and Aranda are here for the long run. I think that may be a very strong possibility given the current conference mishmash going on. For the Warrior program to survive, it needs internal stability more now than ever before.

I thought such surpluses were supposed to be returned to the general public? as in refunds?

  252. madeinhawaii November 7, 2010 10:24 pm

Anyway.. time to call it a night..

    night all.

Hope our Warriors have arrived home safely and are resting up. There’s still about 1/3 of the season left. Lots to look forward to and lots to accomplish. The bye week is going to seem like an interminably long time.

  253. LizKauai (iPad) November 7, 2010 10:27 pm

When all is said and done, change is one of the most reliable variables. I would love to see UH give our coaches good contracts now to let the inevitable change happen later and not sooner.

A-House, you are right on the mark. Even if someone plans to retire at the end of his or her contract, having a plan that extends beyond that retirement is part of responsible leadership. However after listening to JD talk on this subject I’m sure this is something he expects from all his coaches. That would be a good question for him because as Jim Donovan says this is our University.

  255. expat November 7, 2010 10:46 pm

Boise State… Dan Hawkins was Dirk Koetter’s OC and then Chris Peterson was Hawkins’ OC. Bryan Harsin has been Peterson’s OC. Remarkable continuity.

Actually, since joining the WAC (2001) they are 110-15 including bowl games. In 9 completed seasons to date they have had 4 undefeated regular seasons. In only 3 of those 9 seasons have they had more than one loss.

  256. Ballpicker November 7, 2010 10:57 pm

    Good evening everyonz.

Just home form w….and getting a chance to unwind with the Mack Show.

Time to clear the table, regroup, heal and have a big finish. Great time to have a bye week.

Thanks ST for the pics and wall to wall coverage. Safe travels to all returning to the islands.

Hey no player profile tonight? I guess they fogot too much on da mind.

    Go Warriors

  257. expat November 7, 2010 10:59 pm

It is interesting that Peterson was coaching at Oregon when Koetter was the OC there — Koetter moved from being the Oregon OC to replacing Houston Nutt after his 1 year in Boise. Koetter seems to be the pivotal hire. Hawkins was coaching at UC Davis when Peterson played there, which is also interesting.

  258. Ballpicker November 7, 2010 11:04 pm

Not sure but I think there a jersey still to be won. Or did the singular person who picked Boice win?

  261. al November 8, 2010 12:25 am

    two things..,

one, why didn’t we prepare for bsu planning a no-huddle attack??

two, shouldn’t we by now realize that everyone should come at us with a no-huddle attack?

three, why haven’t we been able to solve a counter punch for the no-huddle attack?

can one of our coaches respond to these questions?

  262. Sterling Marinacci November 8, 2010 1:09 am

  263. Pomai November 8, 2010 2:53 am

BallPicker nope no jersey, don’t know what I’m going to do with it, maybe give it to the softball booster club to use as a give away at one of the games….. not sure, and for all those who wonder this ain’t one democracy you don’t have a vote. LOL

Time for the Warriors to heal both physically and mentally.

    Four more games remain.

    Go Warriors!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  266. wafan November 8, 2010 3:36 am

Funny thing happened while at the game.

Talking with the folks sitting in the rows behind. One guy sounded really familiar but I just could not place the name.

He moved from the South, now lives in Hawai’i, and is a true green Warrior fan. Finally sometime during the 1st quarter it comes to me.

Really sounded like Pomai right down to the vocal inflections and terminology.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

That is what we need — more Pomais with unabashed Warrior passion.

  269. Garret November 8, 2010 3:53 am

    expat,

I do agree with your point that BSU being passed over that many years in a row would have caused great scrutiny. The BCS system is lucky that BSU got invited as a 2nd non-AQ school last year, since there will be much less problems if BSU is passed over now instead of being passed over 3 years in a row.

  270. Garret November 8, 2010 3:59 am

    A-House,

I do agree with you that a 5-year plan would be nice to have. Trouble is, UH right now is in a holding pattern because the WAC is about to change after this year (BSU leaving, ESPN reducing the TV deal) and then change completely the following year (Fresno/Nevada leaving, Texas schools and maybe others joining, ESPN reducing the TV deal even more).

Given that the conference situation will be completely different and there is a chance of UH going indy, UH is in survival mode for the next 2 years. After 2-3 years from now we will know what UH’s situation will be, but nobody knows for sure how things will be now. Given that uncertainty, UH shouldn’t just have *1* plan…I’d have 2 or 3 plans based on the conference (or indy) status of UH in 5 years.

A classic example of a school executing a plan is BSU. Their President had a plan to move BSU from D-IAA into the WAC and to have success. He then had a plan to upgrade all of BSU’s facilities and move them into the MWC. He was open about his plan and succeeded in it. Now his plan is to upgrade BSU academically and athletically so that it is at a Pac-12 level by 2020. Even if they aren’t invited to the Pac-12, upgrading their academics and athletics will pay off for them in numerous ways.

  271. Garret November 8, 2010 4:05 am

    Pride.,

UH hasn’t taken bodybag games because it prefers home-and-home series and it has been able to get them. Also, the $1 million payout for bodybag games includes travel expenses–so, UH makes less from bodybag games than any other school in the country because of higher travel expenses.

UH has had a lot of success with games against AQ schools, more than most other non-AQ schools. However, home-and-home deals with the Big 10 and SEC are out because they make too much money off home games (due to the home team having the TV rights to games). The Big 12 and Pac-12 also will have a TV money increase of 2x or more, which means that they will be offering bodybag games instead of home-and-home deals soon. So, if UH wants to play Pac-12 teams in the future, there will be less home-and-home deals (except for certain schools that might recruit Hawaii hard) and UH will need to take $1.5 million payouts for road games or neutral site games.

The rest of the WAC6 will happily take the road-only games with the Pac-12 in exchange for huge paydays…which will make UH’s scheduling more complicated. TV contracts have already changed the scheduling for the Big 10 and SEC, and we can guess what will happen when the Pac-12 and Big 12 get their TV contracts upgraded in less than 2 years.

I’m holding to my optimistic side that the warriors have come home as a smarter team from this humbling experience. Will only help with the remaining games and playing faster.

That no huddle offense is the current buzz amongst teams that can comfortably operate it.

  280. CoolEthan November 8, 2010 4:26 am

Coach Mack and staff are chipping away towards a good season, aside from those 3 losses, 2 of those losses are against top quality teams.

  298. Michigan Warrior November 8, 2010 5:13 am

Morning, everybody! Wow… November 8 already! Winning surely helped this year move quicker!

Just wondering… Y’know how Coach Jones likes to take junk programs and turn them around? I wonder if he’d be up for a challenge like NMSU or SJSU? We need those teams to rise up and actually be competitive in OoC games. Coach Peterson should take one of those teams too. I mean, c’mon now, BSU is winning enough. Time to pass on the reins and move on to the next project! Take our junk teams and show us what you can do!!!

  299. Michigan Warrior November 8, 2010 5:18 am

    Speaking of a “to-do list” at UH…

I could’ve sworn, in the aftermath of Coach Jones’ departure, and the subsequent visits of State Reps to UH… I could’ve sworn I’d read an article in the Star Bulletin that had an itemized list published on repairs, along with estimated costs.

  310. ge November 8, 2010 6:46 am

I have learned a lot from reading this blog. So, please correct me if I am wrong. The bottom line is the revenue, which comes from TV exposure, either directly from being in a better conference such as MWC or BCS level conference, and getting the schools’s proportionate share;, or by striking your own TV deal like Texas or BYU. The other way to tap into that is to travel to one of these schools and take a so-called “body bag” game, and get a $1M+ pay-off. In the recent years, traveling to BSU has been like a body bag game but without the pay-off since it is a WAC game. With BSU leaving the WAC,

UH could replace that slot with a Pac-10 school, that would generate as much interest as BSU and get the $1M payoff as well.

Imagine the interest and hype, if UH is having a great season like this year and then play a BCS school in the middle of the season. That would be quite a challenge, like having a bowl game with the $$ payoff in the middle of the season, and then be able to play in the Hawaii Bowl at the end of the season.

This is not as good as being in a BCS conference, but okay from a revenue standpoint.

  311. A-joe November 8, 2010 7:08 am

The way you counter act incurred bodybag travel expenses is to schedule two bodybag games in a row. JJ proclaimed if we remained on the mainland and took on Georgia’s request after the Florida game and lost, we’d be the richest 0-2 team in the nation.

  312. USMA BOW FAN November 8, 2010 7:27 am

Folks saying Boise fans were nice were telling the truth.

EXCEPT for a busload of grade-school kids. While we were standing in front of the stadium waiting for the gates to open, a yellow school bus full of kids drove by. The kids were hanging out the windows and violently yelling “B.S. YOU! B.S. YOU!!!! I really had to stifle the urge to run that bus down and wash each kid’s mouth out with soap!

  313. CoolEthan November 8, 2010 7:34 am

    Bow Fan-

That busload of rugrats shouting their rant was Napolean Dynamite & Friends. They were on their Vote 4 Pedro campaign, and got lost in the moment.

  314. Garret November 8, 2010 7:35 am

One part of my plan to help raise revenue and boost recruiting for UH:

The 49ers will be playing in a new stadium in Santa Clara in the near future. That is a PRIME recruiting area for UH and there are are LOT of UH fans in the area (I see some of them every other year at SJSU games).

Whenever a new football stadium opens they need to use it for more than just NFL games to help generate money. The Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium hosts 2 or so college football teams every year, the teams earning $4+ million, and the Redskins stadium hosted BSU/Virginia Tech this year and the teams earned over $3.5 million. The 49ers stadium will be looking to host college football games, and those games will be *events* that will get a lot of media attention and fans will flock to the new stadium.

Let us establish UH as one of the teams that is associated with that stadium! UH can give up 1 home game a year to play a neutral site game at the stadium. UH can contact *Pac-12* teams that will be interested in playing in the Bay Area for recruiting purposes. Remember, with the split in divisions for the Pac-12 there will be 2-4 Pac-12 teams that will not play a game in the Bay Area every year. Those teams will want to play in the Bay Area and UH can provide them with a solution for that!

This is the drawback for UH:

    1. One less home game. Instead of having 7 or 8 home games, UH will have 6 or 7 home games. That is a loss of revenue, but with the difficulty in scheduling UH might be playing a D-IAA team that doesn’t draw many fans anyway.

    2. Increased travel. But we are talking about the BAY AREA, which has easy direct flights from Honolulu. With the WAC6 only having *1* California team and with very few nonconference games in Californai, UH needs more California games or recruiting will be hurt badly.

These are some of the benefits for UH:

    1. HUGE monetary benefits. The going rate for a non-AQ school is between $1.25 million and $1.5 million, but instead of playing at an SEC stadium to earn that money UH will be playing at a neutral site against Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, or Colorado…whichever teams are shut out of Bay Area games due to the way the way the conference schedules their games. By the way, that number could be going up to $2 million with the revenue projections I’ve seen.

    2. Pac-12 school at a neutral site is an attractive matchup that will get significant media attention. Recruits around the country will pay attention to the game, and since it will be designated a *UH* home game, UH will own the TV rights. If UH is indy, that would be worth a couple of millions. If UH is part of the WAC, they can still get $1-2 million like BSU got this year.

    3. Pac-12 schools would love to play a game at 49ers stadium because it would help their Bay Area recruiting and give them a greater national profile. The 2 Pac-12 teams that are shut out of the Bay Area every 2 years will be the perfect targets for UH. The going rate for AQ schools in neutral site games is about $3 million, so they will be getting a HUGE payday that won’t be coming from UH. What Pac-12 school is going to turn down $3 million plus a chance to keep their Bay Area recruiting going?

    4. These are *winnable* games for UH, they aren’t flying to Florida to play at someone else’s home stadium. Winning these types of games is what UH needs to build its credibility. The only way for UH to get respect is to WIN…and we aren’t talking about against D-IAA schools or NMSU, SJSU, etc.

    To summarize:

    1. UH comes out ahead financially.

    2. UH gets a huge recruiting boost.

    3. UH gets to play one division of the Pac-12 on a rotation basis.

*If* either of the LA NFL stadiums are built, UH could target those stadiums also. Maybe those would be better than the 49ers stadium for UH recruiting.

Note: With 2 teams being shut out of the Bay Area for 2-year stretches, UH could play one of those teams (say, Arizona) one year and the other one (say, Arizona State) the other year. Then the next 2-year period 2 other Pac-12 teams will be shut out of the Bay Area and UH could rotate through those teams.

    Amazing idea, Garret

  316. A-joe November 8, 2010 7:54 am

Boise’s Fox 12 Sports Director, Naete Kuester Hey there, Naete- Had there been company policy in place that would instruct so called roaming smart reporters to as a courtesy, introduce themselves to a visiting team and request permission to film, all this hoopla would’ve been easily avoided. A smart reporter (under policy set forth by their director) could have gotten interviews with coaches and players and up close footage of practice.

Hey Naete, no offense taken. Such candor from you is to be expected from a TV station in a remote outpost. But, perhaps a simple review of your Journalism 101 cliff notes would help you with establishing guidelines that help roaming reporters conduct themselves and represent their station professionally.

I’m sorry Naete, I assumed too much… you did take 101, didn’t you? My bad.

    End of story.

  317. Garret November 8, 2010 7:54 am

    dcwarrior,

I’ve got a lot more aspects of the plan besides just neutral site games, but I figured I should get feedback on this during the bye week.

I don’t want to propose solutions that seem like we are just asking for charity from the NCAA (JD already said that giving UH and the teams it plays an extra week of the season is not going to be approved by the NCAA). I’m looking for solutions where UH, the teams it plays, and the sponsors/locations *all* benefit. In the above plan, the Pac-12 teams benefit, the 49ers stadium benefits, and UH benefits…there are *no* losers in the deal.

The thing that really burns me up is that we already see from the Cowboys Stadium that *some* college teams will end up making huge money from playing at the 49ers Stadium. Why should BSU or some other MWC team makes millions every year by playing in that stadium? But I am 100% positive that if UH snoozes on this, someone else will grab the opportunity and bank those millions.

If UH goes indy, neutral site games will be a way to play teams during the conference part of the schedule (they won’t have to fly all the way to Hawaii). If UH makes $2 million and lets its mainland fans get to a game easier, all the better. Budget deficit would be gone and UH would have a surplus to boost the rest of its programs.

There are creative ways to plug the holes in UH’s budget and raise UH’s profile nationally. This is just one of them…I’ve hinted at these ideas before but I thought I should use the bye week each season to go over some of the ideas.

  318. Garret November 8, 2010 7:57 am

If UH snoozes on this, the 3 schools that I think are most likely to take advantage of the opportunity: BSU (they are already playing neutral site games and they get most of their recruits from California), Fresno (not too far away from Santa Clara so they will bring their fans), and Nevada (also not too far away). UH does *not* want those schools to have any extra recruiting power and money.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    GARRET: #317 – good thinking!

Ipu Man: #321 – there will be enough fan support on the Mainland – not enough to fill up the seats even with people from Hawaii flying in to see the games BUT the main purpose is for recruiting and to get the transportation costs down (for the Mainland teams) – and hopefully, moneys for us showing up at those Mainland sites. Probably more $$ than at Aloha Stadium with the 25,000-30,000 that show up other than for a USC or a Notre Dame.

But it is the recruiting and showing the flag that would be the main purpose.

I agree with you 100% on playing neutral site games — and a new 49er stadium would be a good place, but JD should strike while the iron is hot. We are at least three years away from that stadium being ready. Candlestick, Seahawk, U of Phoenix, and Qualcomm stadiums are venues that could be taken advantage of immediately and they are all in prime recruiting areas with easy direct flights from Hawaii.

  338. masteruke November 8, 2010 9:00 am

moore scorched our secondary because we have no secondary defense. 83 yards pass for td and the nearest defender was 25 yards back. 4 guys in the endzone and no one makes a play for the ball not one guy jumped. The secondary has been the weak link for UH as long as Miano has been here. Lb’s covering receivers inside and out the offensive coach from BSU was smiling all day. No adjustments for BSU 2 minute offense. Front four played hard but the rest of the guys didn’t showup especially the coaches. Run and shoot can score against the lesser teams but not against the big boys. Alex can run let him run

  339. dcwarrior November 8, 2010 9:02 am

WassupDoc #244 – Can you give a little more concrete advice as to what the fans should do to contact politicians/UH officials to help get them thinking about UH athletics in an integrated way with the rest of the U, instead of the benign neglect athletics now gets?

i.e., who should people email and what should they say?

Re 338:So if the secondary is the weak link tell me why during that six game stretch you had Mana Silva intercepting passes left and right,Why John Hardy-Tuliau caused a fumble which Safety Richard Torres returned for a fumble,Why Jeramy Bryant has had a pick six along with numerous fumble recoveries…Saturdays game was just a matter being out game planned…They took our offense out of the game and that’s about it…With three turnovers if we scored the final score would have been alot closer

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  386. the truth about 6 pack abs November 19, 2010 8:16 pm

Me and you relate and its good you’re committed. I am about 5’5 135lbs. First you probably don’t have much fat on your abs so just do a lot of ab work outs like crunches and situps everyday. Do cardio activities if you want to, any should work swimming, basketball, running, tennis its all good. To beef up your ab work a little more do weighted ab work outs, an ab lounge would work great for this, but if you don’t have any equipment stick the the crunches and abs. People say your diet really matters when training abs but i find that to only apply to certain people who are bigger. Just do the workouts everyday or make a schedule, set goals, and push it to the limit and you’ll have a 6 pack coming in in no time. Remember if you want a full on 6 pack you will not only have to train the middle top bottom abs but also the side of the abs.

if you look in the gang box you will see the white wires wire nutted together, but it sounds like the 2 black wires are the break in the circuit.if you have a multi meter try finding which black wire is hot with switch on,that’s the one you wire the black wire from the fixture with.wiring the white wire to the other black wire, make sure you find and wire in the ground wire, that’s what makes it all work.
