Walking the walk

By Stephen Tsai on December 17, 2010

In a difficult move, it was decided that offensive lineman Brysen “Bula” Ginlack would redshirt as a senior in 2009 to focus on academics. Ginlack was expected to be a starter.  Ginlack regained his starting job this season, and tomorrow he will participate in UH’s graduation ceremony.  “I’m really proud of that,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “We want to win, but we want to graduate our players. Academics and football have to go hand in hand.” Also participating in […]

Back from the dead

By Stephen Tsai on December 16, 2010

Interesting comment from quarterback Bryant Moniz: “We’re the cockroaches. Everybody thought they killed us last year. They thought we were dead. And then we got up. You know when you think you killed a cockroach, then you come back, and it’s gone? That’s us. They thought we were dead after last year. We came back. We won 10 games. We’re going to a bowl game. They need to get a bigger slipper to kill us.” * * * * *  […]

Reset

Even though the calendar shows “Wednesday,” it was “Game Week Tuesday” for the Warriors today.  There were position meetings for about an hour, followed by a one-hour practice. The Warriors worked on defensive schemes, as well as one-on-one blocking on kickoff return drills. Head coach Greg McMackin excused players who were taking final exams or finishing papers. The two starting slotbacks, Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares, were both absent. Salas is set to graduate Saturday.  McMackin said the Warriors will […]

Salas named to All-America team

By Stephen Tsai on December 14, 2010

Left slotback Greg Salas today was named to the Associated Press’ 2010 All-America third team.  And, like co-championships, such an honor comes with the designation “All America.” * * * * *  Will Gregory, a 6-foot, 200-pound running back from Dominguez High, said he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. He reports in June. Yesterday, Gregory was named to the All-CIF team.  Fun facts about Gregory:  • His uncle is George Lumpkin, UH’s personnel director.  • He works […]

Delay of game

By Stephen Tsai on December 13, 2010

The Warriors had scheduled a scrimmage today involving scout players and redshirts. But because more than 75 percent of the players said they had finals today, it was decided to cancel practice. The Warriors will have late-afternoon meetings today and tomorrow, and resume practicing Wednesday. At that time, it is hoped, the scrimmage will be played.  UH head coach Greg McMackin said it was more important for the Warriors to focus on academics. The Warriors missed 20 school days because […]
