Walking the walk

In a difficult move, it was decided that offensive lineman Brysen “Bula” Ginlack would redshirt as a senior in 2009 to focus on academics. Ginlack was expected to be a starter.

Ginlack regained his starting job this season, and tomorrow he will participate in UH’s graduation ceremony.

“I’m really proud of that,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “We want to win, but we want to graduate our players. Academics and football have to go hand in hand.”

Also participating in the graduation ceremony are:

• Slotback Dustin Blount

• Wideout Jett Jasper

• Linebacker Joe Malabuyoc

• Slotback/punt returner Ryan Henry

• Slotback Greg Salas

• Right guard Adrian Thomas

• Wideout Mike Tinoco

• Cornerback Jeramy Bryant

Also, former Warriors:

• Adam Leonard

* Josh Rice

• Blaze Soares

    Top 5

It’s good to hear that our boys are graduating. Some people give athletes a hard time about being in school just to play sports and they don’t realize how much effort it takes to get everything done. There are plenty of students who don’t work or play sports who don’t ever graduate.

    SteveM:

I was usually hanging out on the TRIAD blogs (O&E, MLC & WWD, when HA was still in existence). I’m still in Chandler following UH sports however I can – satellite dish, DTV, internet. I was watching the 2008 UH-Nevada game last night on my DVR :-). I’ve had the opportunity to watch the UH’s baseball/softball team play against us during the playoffs on campus. It’s too bad that ASU hasn’t scheduled UH for a football game here in all the previous years. It’s just a 5 hour drive from LAS to here…done that many times, even saw a few games against UNLV there.

  7. Okole Maluna December 17, 2010 7:28 am

The list above demonstrates how so few accept, endure, sacrifice, persevere and believe the challenge to become an Academic Warrior.

So few are given the privilege. Even fewer see it through.

All that these young men have experienced can never be taken from them. Where ever their paths through life may lead, they will forever be known as Warriors.

Mahalo, men. Proud of you all.

Re next week’s T-Gate: DrDoc and I would love to make right on the spot malassadas to order, but we need to know how many people would want to have them.

Once we open up the container – the dough is made by Agnes’ Portugues Bakery – it has to be used up within the hour so we cannot take home any leftover dough because it has “died.”

Yes, we can make all of them within half an hour or so, but if they don’t get eaten right away, they won’t taste really great. Malassadas are meant to be eaten within minutes of being made.

So is there any interest here – we need to have about 50 orders – assuming that each person eats three pieces. So far, seven people have responded.

  35. A-House December 17, 2010 9:07 am

Congratulations to all the graduates tomorrow and a very special congrats to all student athletes for that is a very difficult road to follow!!

  36. Derek December 17, 2010 9:13 am

Kudos to all the graduates. To be a student-athlete and be able to graduate is like being an All-America, really. It is hard to go to school and play sports at the same time. Coach Mack has the right philosophy in graduating all our players and the summer school program has been the greatest thing in getting players to get some credits while also staying in Hawaii to work on their unsupervised drills and team bonding. With our great weather you can’t beat being in Hawaii.

Notice that the UH football team doesn’t have any major off the field problems like other schools. That means that our coaches are recruiting the right kind of players who are good citizens and the coaches are preaching the right things and the right kind of discipline. I really like that. Coaches have to practice tough love and it will pay off in the long run.

  37. Kapahulu December 17, 2010 9:13 am

Congratulations to all the UH Graduates. I’ll be there as a proud parent as my son will be one the Graduates.

(Michelle) Nagamine was the women’s head coach at Hawaii Pacific for the past three seasons, helping turn the Division II Lady Sea Warriors into a Pacific West Conference contender. She’s coached at Kamehameha almost since the day she returned to Hawaii in 1990 from an outstanding soccer career at Santa Clara, and led the Warriors to five state championships and six Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles. Nagamine had a full-time job as director of sports marketing and sales at Outrigger Hotels and Resorts. Finally, she was technical director of the popular Leahi Soccer Club, where she groomed many of the same players who smiled and clapped while Nagamine shared her vision for the Wahine program.

She must vacate all of those posts, but her infectious energy overcame any self-doubt in her final interview with the UH selection committee led by Donovan.

Risking it all on a three-year contract. That’s commitment. That’s why these coaches need to be paid a pretty handsome sum.

  43. RupertDaStupert December 17, 2010 9:43 am

Forgive me for getting off the subject a bit. All the Hotels in Waikiki are doing good business. I believe the Five-O publicity had a lot to do with that. It is good for our economy, it is good for business in Hawaii. Those who want to send fan mail, X-mas cards, etc to the cast and crew, Pls send to Hawaii Five-O, 605 Kapiolani Blvd, 96813. Scott Caan got nominated for a Golden Globe as supporting actor in Five-O. All this success tranfers to success for Hawaii. Proud of the Warriors for graduating. Education will carry them a long way to a succesful life.

  44. kawika49 December 17, 2010 9:47 am

#44 Daniel Dae Kim follows UH Warriors football. Five-O might very well work some scripts in and around UH sports. I met Alex O’Loughlin at the studios. Extremely nice person. 6’3/4 tall. Five-O is pro-active in the affairs of Hawaii. The production team really wants to involve Hawaii in its scripts. If they’re winners in the ratings, we of Hawaii are winners. The publicity they give us is worth millions and millions of dollars.

  51. RupertDaStupert December 17, 2010 10:07 am

#47, this new Five-O production staff really seems sincere in involving locals and integrating the Hawaii spirit in its scripts. The writing team of Orci, Kurtzmann and Lenkov really study and do their homework and utilize experts on Hawaii culture, language, lifestyles to make it as authentic as they possibly can. I was at the studios inquiring about getting Five-O badges for the UH sports administration to use as incentives to sign recruits. They said they are working on it as well as other souvenirs.

    THEY’VE “GONE VIRAL”!!!

Video of the UH marching band has been spreading all over the internet. The footage is of a particular unique formation they did during halftime of the USC game (and apparently others) where they form a football player running up to kick a field goal.

Interesting article about bowl game officiating crews. Included is each bowl game and which conference the officiating crew is coming out of, keeping in mind that the refs are from a neutral conference:

    http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1166247

WAC refs doing the Poinsettia Bowl (Navy vs. SDSU) and the Armed Forces Bowl (Army vs. SMU).

As was mentioned previously, Pac-10 refs are doing the Hawai’i Bowl. Pac-10 refs also doing the Vegas Bowl despite Utah moving there next year, and MWC refs for the Humanitarian Bowl despite Fresno moving in 2012.

The Brady Bunch and Saved by the Bell “Hawaiian” episodes did some damage as well.

Is is surprising that recruits are still visiting or did I not pay attention or things are moving too slow or forgot visitations can be had until each recruit does the 5 visits allowed by NCAA?

  120. bighilofan2 December 17, 2010 5:50 pm

not every player who grows up in Hawaii is ready to play for Hawaii right outta high school.

sum need seasoning. some need alotg of seasoning. den, wen da head is just right, if da alignment of the karma is right, den da moment is right.

  121. bighilofan2 December 17, 2010 5:53 pm

Tonight was a good game for the rebuilding rainbow warriors. They are still learning how to play as a team and showed progress as the game went on. Only 9 bows were suited for the game and both miles and barnes played almost the entire game. As duffer said, miles did a very good job at the point position, but has much to learn. both barnes and johnson can shoot the perimeters which forced chicago to change their defense. vander is learning how to work both ends of the court. wiseman is a good defensive player. as duffer said, kurtz can be a force, but needs to learn how to move in one motion. brumfield is talented, but has some difficulty learning how to play as a team. my choice for player of the game is joston thomas. he played with intensity, but will become better as the season goes. Coach Gib is very vocal and animated, but I think when the team starts to play as a team, he will truly enjoy the fruits of his labor. one last thing, watching the bows play this year is much better than past years. they are young, make mistakes, but the potential is awesome.

jeezy…daley would be a great pick up. getting his gteam mate would e even greater.

hawaii likes to offer the two for one deals. yup, landing daley and lattimore would be huge.

  175. jeezy33 December 18, 2010 12:33 am

Al, I think as long as we offer, we will get him. I am surprised he doesn’t have more offers with his 6-4 frame. I think he played out of position at Ventura for the team and flourished with 100+ tackles and 15 for loss. He seem’s like a hybrid type player who can play multiple positions though. Thats always good to have

  176. al December 18, 2010 12:37 am

not to mention that they could both bunk with recent commit chris gant.

small kine story on gant’s decision.

  177. al December 18, 2010 12:39 am

and from that same blog comes…

“Perhaps the Pirates’ biggest prizes, quarterback Antavius Sims, linebacker Brenden Daley and defensive end John Lattimore, will transfer after the spring semester.

Washington has invited Sims and Daley to watch them practice in San Diego ahead of the Holiday Bowl. Daley and Lattimore have lined up visits to Hawaii, which recently landed Moorpark star receiver Chris Gant.

“I’m excited to head over there and see what it’s all about,” said Daley, who will spend this weekend on Oahu.”

  178. al December 18, 2010 12:42 am

jeezy…he’d be huge, literally, if he came here and competed with george daily-lyles for the mlb postion.

then again in mack’s way of building a defense, he’d try him out at de. this guy could handle it.

can you imagine adding in john lattimore.

  179. al December 18, 2010 12:49 am

i think the moorpark cc program fell under the radar because the year before they were 0-10. hopefully we will benefit from this even further.

chris gant was the find of the year and might very well end up the gem of this recruit class. landing daley and/or lattimore would be the coup de gras.

Congratulations to all the Warriors that will graduate this semester! Not only will graduating early let them start their careers early, it helps free up scholarships for the team to offer to players starting in January. So, the players benefit and the team benefits.

Congratulations to Adam, Josh, and Blaze for getting their degrees. I’m glad that they didn’t give up on finishing their degree after their playing careers ended. Their options in life expand with that degree.

  189. whitey December 18, 2010 3:46 am

    good morning garret

  190. Garret December 18, 2010 3:52 am

People have made valid points on both sides of the issue of canceling practices. I’ve never heard of a school giving up so many of the practices allowed for a bowl team. I think that two things are important to consider:

    1. UH will be prepared for the bowl game. Mack seems to have wanted to prepare for the bowl like it was a regular game, and that could actually help the Warriors win the game. The players will kind of prepare like it was a game week, with a similar number of practices as if it was a regular game. So, I do *not* expect the reduced practice amount to affect who wins/loses the game.

    2. One thing that coaches always point out is that the 15 extra practices that a bowl game allows is very important for a teams *future* because the younger players get to practice for many of the early practices to gain experience and skills that will prepare them for the next few seasons. Mack himself has made this point. The first 5-10 practices are normally to let the redshirts/backups/younger players gain experience (kind of like a bye week) and then the starters get the bulk of the work in the final week or two like a regular game week. So, UH won’t have its game prep affected, but the lost practices could be an opportunity lost that won’t show up for the next 2-3 years.

  191. Garret December 18, 2010 3:52 am

Good morning Whitey. I’m awake before everybody else in my family so I can blog finally. My kids should wake up soon so I’ll disappear then.

  192. book review apa citation December 18, 2010 3:52 am

Great blog you may just here. I actually like the story again of this submit but there are definitely some points lacking to get the whole view on your point!

  193. Garret December 18, 2010 3:57 am

Maybe the problem is that UH has final much later than schools on the quarter system and the Hawaii Bowl is pretty early in the bowl season. Also, UH plays a game 7 days later than most teams, leaving much less time for bowl practices than most teams. For those comparing Tulsa to UH, Tulsa’s last game was *8* days before UH’s last game. Isn’t Tulsa practicing about 8 more days than UH?

This is one reason why it is considered more beneficial/prestigious to play in a bowl game later in the year. The later the game is, the more time a team has to heal up, take finals, and still get their bowl practices in.

  194. Garret December 18, 2010 3:58 am

    “final” should be “final exams”

Hey, it’s not like they lost by 75!

Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl today for the Div III NC features Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mt. Union (PA) for the sixth consecutive time! The last time these two haven’t met in the final was when Linfield won it all in 2004.

Both of these schools have excellent football programs. Because there are no roster limits in D3 they each carry total squads of around 200 including a JV program. Often in D3 a team will find success in a particular season because of the transfer of a few “ringers” from a D1 program but school like MUC and UW-W seem to build long-lasting success from within their own ranks.

  209. RainbowCliff December 18, 2010 6:20 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

Wet week in LA as rains are predicted through out this weekend and clearing up after Christmas. Bummed out as their is no joy here in Los Angeles when rain comes as roads are wet, traffic is a mess and staying dry is always a challenge BUT a wet Christmas is better then NO Christmas at all. My Tennis game suffers with all out door courts soaked so I have to get the round ball out and put on my Rainbow game for these young cats in Magic’s gym and beat them down with the post and midrange game as I still play the “D” with many of them don’t play or know how to defend.

Congrats to the seniors who will be graduating today as truly that was my FINEST moment walking away with that degree as playing your sport and going to class is not easy and during my time we had no computers, only type writers and going down to the basement at Sinclair Library researching the microfilm for topic and data. Enjoyed every moment of upper campus as Manoa is one beautiful University !

This evening Lady Skywalker is having her birthday celebration and signing letter of intent for Washington State University. I and my better half will be attending the celebration as well as invited guests and her high school team mates and friends. Father sky walker has spared no expense to this auspicious occasion as valet parking, wolfgang puck and the Mission Viejo Castle will be ROCKING with many in attendance proud of this moment. Starting freshmen middle blocker for the lady cougars, 4 years athletic scholarship majoring in animal science as she wants to be a veterinarian.

Garret, scholastic readers has given me boxes of children books for my Center. I have put one away for your girls as the books are brand new and they go all the way up to 6th grade reading. Math, science, fiction and non fiction stories. I know how Mika and Faith are AVID readers so I got them LOADED with all types of reading materials. Will get them to you when ever it is convenient before or after the holidays.

Peace on Earth will come to stay, when we live Christmas every day !

Mele kalikimaka to all of you !

    BOWL MATCH-UP

The No. 24 University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team will make its sixth appearance in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl when it faces Tulsa, co-champions of the Conference USA West Division, Friday, Dec. 24. Kick-off is 3:00 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.

The game pits two of the most potent offenses in college football. The Warriors (10-3), co-champions of the Western Athletic Conference, lead the nation in passing offense (387.8) and rank eighth in total offense (496.8) and ninth in scoring (39.9), while the Hurricane (9-3) are fifth in total offense (503.5), ninth in scoring (39.6), 15th in rushing offense (219.3) and 16th in passing offense (284.1).

UH features the nation’s top passer in quarterback Bryant Moniz. The junior leads the nation in passing (356.1) and total offense (361.9). His favorite targets are senior slot receivers Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares. Salas, a two-time first-team all-WAC pick, is the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards and ranks among the top receivers in receptions and yards per game. Pilares also ranks among the nation’s Top 10 in both categories.

Defensively, the Warriors are much improved and lead the country in turnovers forced (36) and interceptions (23). Safety Mana Silva is tied for the national lead with eight interceptions while linebacker Corey Paredes ranks 11th in tackles per game.

The Hurricane are led by junior quarterback G.J. Kinne who has thrown for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns, while also rushing for a team-high 557 yards and seven touchdowns. Junior receiver Damaris Johnson is the nation’s leader in all-purpose yardage and leads the team with 53 receptions for 771 yards. As a team, Tulsa is tied for fifth nationally with 19 interceptions.

The Warriors are 3-2 in five previous trips to the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl and will be making their 10th all-time major bowl appearance. UH’s last appearance in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl was a 49-21 loss to Notre Dame in 2008. Prior to that, Hawai‘i won three straight, defeating Houston (2003), UAB (2004), and Arizona State (2006).

Tulsa will be making their 17th all-time bowl appearance and fifth in the last six years.

    WARRIOR STORYLINES

*UH is making its 10th all-time major bowl appearance and has a 5-4 record.

*UH leads the country in passing at 387.8 per game, ranks eighth in total offense (496.8) and ninth in scoring (39.9). Tulsa’s pass defense ranks 119th nationally (305.7).

*UH quarterback Bryant Moniz is No. 1 nationally in passing (356.1) and total offense (361.9).

*Placekicker Scott Enos needs four PATs to tie Dan Kelly’s single-season school-record of 70 PATs.

*Slot receiver Greg Salas needs three receptions to break Davone Bess’ single-season record of 108 set in 2007 and 39 yards to eclipse Ashley Lelie’s single-season mark of 1,713 set in 2001.

*UH has scored 40 or more points in five of seven home games eight times overall this season. UH has won its last 34 games when scoring 40 or more points since 2005.

*UH is averaging 45.0 points and 555.7 yards of total offense per game at home this season while Bryan Moniz is averaging 392.7 passing yards per game.

*UH leads the nation in turnovers forced (36) and interceptions (23). The defense has at least two picks in each of the last 10 games after not recording an interception in its first three games.

*Safety Mana Silva is tied for the national lead with Virginia Tech’s Jayron Hosley with eight interceptions. Silva is also UH’s career leader with 14.

UH VS. TULSA: The teams have met eight times with the Warriors holding a 5-3 advantage. UH has won three of four games in Honolulu, including the teams’ most recent meeting in 2004, a 44-16 victory at Aloha Stadium. Tulsa’s only win in Honolulu occurred in 2000. Tulsa and Hawai‘i were Western Athletic Conference rivals from 1999-2004. UH won four of the six meetings in WAC play.

BOWL BOUND: UH will make its 10th appearance in a major bowl. Hawai‘i secured a spot into the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl after its win over Idaho on Oct. 30, which is the earliest bowl invitation in school history. The Warriors will play in their seventh bowl in the last nine years and sixth to the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl. UH owns a 5-4 all-time bowl record.

10-WIN SEASONS: UH finished the regular season with a 10-3 mark and in the process became the sixth team in school history to post a 10-win season. The first occurred in 1925 as the “Wonder Team” completed a perfect 10-0 season. In the modern era, all five UH teams that won 10 or more games, including this year’s squad, played in bowl games.

WAC CHAMPS: UH clinched at least a share of the WAC championship for the fourth time in school history. Hawai‘i, Boise State, and Nevada completed WAC play with identical 7-1 records. Hawai‘i won its first title in 1992, sharing it with Fresno State and Brigham Young. In 1999, the Warriors shared the title with TCU and Fresno State. In 2007, UH completed its first undefeated conference season (8-0) with an outright title.

NATIONALLY RANKED: UH is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press poll and No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches poll. The last time the team was ranked in both polls was during the season No. 19 (A.P.) and No. 17 (Coaches). UH was also ranked in the final poll in 2006 (No.24) and 1992 (No. 20).

WAC’S BEST: A total of 10 Warriors were selected to the All-WAC first and second teams. Three Warriors were named to the first team; slot receiver Greg Salas, linebacker Corey Paredes, and safety Mana Silva. Another seven Warriors were selected to the second team; quarterback Bryant Moniz, running back Alex Green, slot receiver Kealoha Pilares, offensive linemen Adrian Thomas and Laupepa Letuli, defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu, and placekicker Scott Enos. The 10 all-WAC honorees represent the most UH players selected to the all-WAC teams since 2007, when 12 Warriors were named. In 2006, a record 13 Warriors were picked to the first and second teams.

NATION’S BEST: Slot receiver Greg Salas was one of 10 semifinalists for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation’s top receiver. He was not one of the three finalists. Salas was the first UH receiver named a semifinalist since Chad Owens in 2004.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN: Slot receiver Kealoha Pilares earned a spot on the ESPN Academic All-America first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Pilares is just the eighth Warrior in program history to earn Academic All-America honors and just the third to be named first team. The last player to earn Academic All-America honors was defensive back Chris Shinnick, who earned first-team accolades from CoSIDA in 1997. Travis Sims also earned first-team recognition from the College Football Association (CFA) in 1992. Pilares and safety Mana Silva were both named to the Academic all-District VIII team earlier this season.

WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE: The 2010 season marks Aloha Stadium’s 35th anniversary

as home to the Warrior football team. The stadium opened Sept. 12, 1975 and UH boasts an all-time mark of 176-111-4 for a 61.1 winning percentage in the Halawa venue. The Warriors are 6-1 at Aloha Stadium this season, its fifth straight winning mark at the facility.

DEAN OF THE WAC: The Warriors are in their 32nd season in the Western Athletic Conference, the longest streak of any current WAC member. UH owns a 128-119-3 all-time record in league play dating back to 1979.

WARRIORS IN THE NFL: A total of 13 former Warriors are currently on NFL rosters this season,

which ranks second among WAC schools behind Fresno State. Among the former Warriors are Ikaika Alama-Francis (Miami, 4th), Davone Bess (Miami, 3rd), John Estes (Jacksonville, 1st), Wayne Hunter (New York Jets, 7th), Jake Ingram (New Orleans, 2nd), Travis LaBoy (San Francisco, 6th), Vince Manuwai (Jacksonville, 8th), Reagan Mauia (Arizona, 3rd), Mat McBriar (Dallas, 7th), Ryan Mouton (Tennessee, 2nd), Samson Satele (Oakland, 4th), Isaac Sopoaga (San Francisco, 7th), and Pisa Tinoisamoa (Chicago, 8th).

YOUNGEST COORDINATORS: The Warriors feature a pair of first-year coordinators.

Offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich (31) and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (33) are

among the youngest in the country and only Toledo’s Paul Nichols (29) and Matt Campbell

    (30) have the youngest combined age (59) than UH’s coordinators (64).

WALK-ON U.: UH’s walk-on program, monitored by associate head coach and secondary coach Rich Miano, has produced many standout players for the Warriors over the years, namely 2007 Heisman Trophy finalist and record-setting quarterback Colt Brennan. Miano was a walk-on himself who later spent 11 seasons in the NFL. Former walk-ons currently on NFL rosters include defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis (Miami), long snapper Jake Ingram (New England), linebacker Travis LaBoy (San Francisco), fullback Reagan Maui‘a (Arizona), and punter Mat McBriar (Dallas). Prominent walk-ons on this year’s squad include quarterback Bryant Moniz, center Bronson Tiwanak, defensive linemen Liko Satele and Kamalu Umu, linebacker Corey Paredes, and safeties Richard Torres and Mana Silva.

FREQUENT FLIERS: UH made a total of five road trips this season for its six away games. The

team travelled approximately 35,000 miles through the air and spent more than 27 days on the road. UH’s first trip to Army marked the farthest game east in school history. The second leg of the trip featured a non-conference game at Colorado and in between, UH spent the week in Las Vegas. All told, the trip lasted 12 days, covered 11,184 air miles and took the team to eight cities in five states and four time zones.

NATIONAL TV DARLINGS: UH has made 57 all-time appearances on national television including 37 times since 1999. UH has made four appearances on national TV this season. UH has an all-time record of 17-38-2 on national TV.

PRESEASON POLLS: Hawai‘i was picked fifth in the preseason WAC Coaches’ poll and seventh in the Media poll. The Warriors received 39 votes in the coaches’ poll and 166 votes in the media poll. Defending champion Boise State was the preseason favorite in both polls. Last season, UH was picked fifth in both preseason polls and finished in a three-way tie for fifth.

OH CAPTAIN: In a team vote, slot receiver Greg Salas, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, and linebacker Corey Paredes were named the team’s captains this season. In addition, a fourth captain will be named each game.

    OFFENSIVE STORYLINES

RARE FEAT: If Bryant Moniz passes for 371 yards against Tulsa in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, UH can become only the second team in NCAA FBS history to feature a 5,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher, and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season. Ironically, Tulsa’s 2007 squad was the only team to accomplish that feat with Paul Smith (5,065 passer), Tarrion Adam (1,225 rusher), Brennan Marion (1,244 receiver), Trae Johnson (1,088 receiver) and Charles Clay (1,024 receiver). In addition, UH is only the eighth team to feature a 3,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher, and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season (Tulsa in 2007, New Mexico in 2007, UCF in 2002, Fresno St. in 2001, Nevada in 1997 and 1998, and San Diego St. in 1995).

BIG PLAYS: This season, UH has produced 83 plays of 25-yards or more of which 27 resulted in touchdowns. Slot receiver Greg Salas has been a part of a team-leading 22 big plays. Slot receiver Kealoha Pilares has six big plays which resulted in touchdowns of 56, 65, 30, 48, 66, and 37. He also had an 80-yard non-scoring reception from Bryant Moniz against Colorado. Running back Alex Green has 13 big plays rushing the ball and another four big plays on the receiving end. On the flip side, UH surrendered 53 big plays of 25 or more yards, 11 of which resulted in touchdowns.

GOING GREEN: Senior running back Alex Green has been on a rampage in recent weeks, with four 100-yard games in the last six outings, including a school-record 327-yard performance against New Mexico State. Green broke a 60-year old mark previously held by Pete Wilson (270) in 1950. Green also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the year, becoming just the seventh Warrior to achieve the feat and first since Travis Sims in 1992. His 1,168 yards is the second highest single-season total in school history and his team-leading 17 touchdowns is two shy of the single-season school mark for a running back. In UH’s win at Utah State, he rushed for a then-career-high 172 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. The last time a UH player scored four rushing touchdowns in a game was Glenn Freitas at UNLV in 1995. Green was named WAC offensive player of the week twice and following his 327-yard output against NMSU, was picked as the Capital One Performer of the Week.

MIGHTY “MO”: Bryant Moniz is arguably one of the top quarterbacks in the country despite not being mentioned as a semifinalist for either of the national quarterback awards. The former walk-on, leads the nation in both passing (356.1) and total offense (361.9) and has completed 66.3 percent of his passes with 36 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. The junior also ranks third in points responsible for (18.36) and 10th in passing efficiency (161.9). In UH’s win over San Jose State, Moniz set the single-game school record with 560 yards passing on 32-of-44 attempts. Eight of his passes went for 25-yards or more including all three TD passes. With 4,629 passing yards this season, Moniz is the third quarterback in school history to surpass 4,000 passing yards in a season joining Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan and ranks only behind Brennan’s 5,549 yards in 2006 atop the school’s single-season yardage list.

THE “1” TO WATCH: Slot receiver Greg Salas, one of the nation’s premiere receivers and big play threats, is now UH’s all-time leading receiver with 4,131 yards, breaking Jason Rivers’ record of 3,919. He also has 272 career receptions and needs 21 catches to break Davone Bess’ record of 293. Salas is also on the verge of breaking single-season marks for receptions (needs three to break Davone Bess’s record of 108) and yards (needs 39 to break Ashley Lelie’s record 1,713). The 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior, ranks No. 2 nationally in receiving yards per game (128.8) and third in receptions per game (8.15) and also has 12 touchdowns. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving yards for the second straight year. He has 18 career 100-yard receiving games, including nine this season and has a streak of 40 consecutive games with a reception dating back to the first game of his sophomore season.

ALL-AROUND ATHLETE: In four seasons with the Warriors, slot receiver Kealoha Pilares has played three different positions on offense. However this season, he is having his breakout year. The Damien High School product currently ranks fifth nationally in receiving yards per game (108.9) and ninth in receptions per game (7.33) and currently has 1,306 receiving yards this season, the fifth highest single-season total in school history. He earned WAC Player of the Week honors after his record-breaking performance against Louisiana Tech in which he broke the school’s single-game receptions record with 18 for a career-high 217 yards and two touchdowns. Pilares started his career at running back in 2007 and led the team in rushing with 388 yards and three touchdowns. The next year, he switched to slot receiver and led the team with seven touchdowns. Last season he switched to the outside and finished the year with 66 receptions for 690 yards and four scores. He has topped the 100-yard mark six times this season and ranks second on the team with 15 touchdowns. His 3,379 career all-purpose yards ranks seventh all-time.

THE RUN-AND-SHOOT: The Warriors currently lead the country in passing, averaging 387.8 yards per game. Last season, UH finished in the top three nationally in passing offense for the 10th time in the last 11 years after averaging 337.0 ypg. UH also finished 14th in total offense (437.5), ranking in the Top 20 for the ninth time in the last 11 years.

    DEFENSIVE STORYLINES

BALL HOGS: UH leads the nation in both turnovers forced (36) and interceptions (23), the latter of which is remarkable considering the Warriors did not record an interception in either of their first three games. UH is also second in turnover margin with a 1.23 per game advantage. The defense has at least two interceptions in each of its last 10 games, including three each against Louisiana Tech, Fresno State, and UNLV. Safety Mana Silva is tied with Virginia Tech’s Jayron Hosley for the national lead with eight picks and has a UH record 14 in his career This season four different players— Aaron Brown, Jeramy Bryant, Corey Parades and Mana Silva—have logged multiple interceptions in a game.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING: With nine wins in its last 10 game, UH’s defense has come up big. Not counting the Boise State game, the defense has allowed 16.1 points and 272.7 yards per game during that stretch and forced 28 turnovers while allowing only 2.4 yards per rush and 4.0 yards of total offense per play. The defense limited Utah State to 181 yards of total offense, UH’s best defensive performance since 2005 until holding San Jose State to 164 yards of total offense three weeks later. UH also held Nevada’s high-powered offense to 293 yards of total offense, while limiting Colin Kaepernick to only 30 yards rushing and 159 yards passing.

ON THE LOOSE: Linebacker Corey Paredes is not only the team leader on defense, but he ranks 11th nationally in tackles, averaging 11.1 per game. Paredes was named WAC defensive player of the week in consecutive weeks following wins over Nevada and Utah State. The junior had his first two interceptions of his career in UH’s 45-7 win at Utah State and another against Idaho. He had two forced fumbles in UH’s upset of then-No. 19 Nevada. On the year, Paredes has tallied double-digit tackles seven times and his 144 tackles is tied for the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.

WELCOME HOME: UH’s defensive line is bolstered by a pair of first-year transfers, Kaniela Tuipulotu, an all-WAC second team pick, and Kamalu Umu. Tuipulotu, who was considered one of the state’s top recruits in 2006, attended Arizona for two years after a standout career at Kahuku High School on O‘ahu. His cousin is L.A. Laker Luke Walton (both mothers aresisters). He started seven games at Arizona during his sophomore season in 2008. Kamalu Umu, a transfer from Charleston Southern, walked-on to the Warriors and earned a scholarship and starting spot in fall camp. The Saint Louis School (Honolulu) graduate played one season at CSU after attending Arizona Western for two years. In addition, left end Liko Satele started six games last season for UH after transferring from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: Liko Satele, a World of Life Academy (Honolulu) graduate, comes from a long line of Satele’s who’ve played for the Warriors. His father, Alvis, played for UH from 1981-84 and brother Brashton (2006-08) was a former Warrior linebacker who is currently a rookie free agent with the New York Jets. His cousins are former Warriors Samson Satele (2003-06), Hercules Satele (2004-07), and Melila Purcell (2003-06). Samson is currently the starting center for the Oakland Raiders. His mother LeeAnn (Pestana) was a member of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball teams that won NCAA Championships in 1982 and ‘83 while his sister Chanteal is a junior on the current UH volleyball team.

    SPECIAL TEAMS STORYLINES

ENOS HAS LEG-UP: Senior placekicker Scott Enos has etched his name on three school records this season in addition to being named to the all-WAC second team. In last week’s win over UNLV, he broke Justin Ayat’s record for most points in a season (117). He also broke Dan Kelly’s single-season record for consecutive PATs and now has a current streak of 66. He needs four PATs to break Kelly’s single-season record of 70 PATs made. In UH’s win at New Mexico State, Enos broke Jason Elam’s record for consecutive PATs in a career of 91 and now is a perfect 100-of-100 in his two seasons with the Warriors. Enos has also converted 17 of 21 field goal attempts this season. In his first year with the Warriors last season, Enos connected on 12-of-19 field goal attempts and converted all 34 extra point attempts.

AUSIE, AUSIE, AUSIE: Punter Alex Dunnachie, one of two Australians on this year’s team, has displayed a powerful leg so far this season. His average of 43.1 yards per punt would rank third in the WAC if given enough attempts. He has 16 punts of over 50 yards including a long of 61 at Colorado and pinned 15 punts inside the 20 yard line. Last season he had 10 punts of over 50 yards, 13 punts inside the 20 and only five touch-backs. Last year also marked Dunnachie’s first year of organized football.

FOLLOWING IN HIS FOOTSTEPS: Sophomore Luke Ingram continues the family tradition of long snapping for the Warriors. Luke’s brother Jake, was a three-year starter from 2006-08 and was the first UH long snapper to be drafted in the NFL, taken in the sixth round of the 2008 Draft by the New England Patriots. Luke started all 13 games as a true freshman and did not record one bad snap all year long.

crullers – small friedcake formed into twisted strips and fried; richer than doughnuts.

  225. Shoko December 18, 2010 8:20 am

I have a serious problem with donuts (sweet tooth) and it doesn’t help that my wife likes to bake. 🙁

Anywho, can’t wait for the Hawaii Bowl and the UH BB going against FSU. Would be a nice start to a vacation with an upset and sending the Semis back home with a loss. 🙂

  226. Shoko December 18, 2010 8:25 am

If it hasn’t been mentioned already, the Mtn has expanded their coverage (Comcast Xfinity) to Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Michigan and Western New England.

I’m sure Michigan Warrior will be pleased.

  227. madeinhawaii December 18, 2010 8:32 am

Chilly morning to all! brr… .. feels like the online paper has shrunk several pages when there are so few articles on College football.

  228. hawaiiansun December 18, 2010 8:35 am

sorry, you cant underplay the lost of valuable practice time, especially in the case of the numbers the warriors missed, no matter who or how you attempt to rationalize or apply lipstick to the issue. Tulsa is a quality team with a balanced O attack and hurry-up offense. Preparation, conditioning and game-type timing comes through sustained periods of quality repetition. Given the 3-week break period–the 11-day layoff is disturbing, no doubt….hopefully, the warriors will max out, given the remainder of time remaining. It will show on game day, either way.

    Go Warriors!

  229. MichiganWarrior December 18, 2010 8:43 am

Mahalo, ST, on a great “Brothers for life” article!

  230. MichiganWarrior December 18, 2010 8:44 am

But all good things come to an end sooner or later, and what better time and place for Tulsa’s defense to show up than in the Hawaii Bowl? They’ll get it done.

On FSN – game between Serra and Folsom

    ending 1st half

    Folsom 21, Serra 20

Folsom QB – Dano Graves – me thinks brother of UH QB David Graves

    Looks like a mud bowl

    Serra QB going to SMU

  240. dennis halloran December 18, 2010 4:42 pm

Dano Graves led Folsom to a Div 2 state title by accounting for 300 plus yards passing and running

Announcers are projecting him as a slot receiver/running back and noted his older brother is a Hawaii backup QB

The SMU bound QB for Serra stunk up the place

Dude, I wish I could write articles half as good as you. Your posts are always so well written. Do you outsource it or write it yourself?

  249. omron pedometer December 19, 2010 8:29 pm

Omron monitors usually come with two cuff sizes. Contact Omron through their website, or ask the shop where you originally bought the monitor from. It’s important to use the right sized cuff, so you’re right to try to get one that fits. Using a cuff that’s too small will overestimate your BP, whereas a cuff that is too big will tend to underestimate it.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Count me as yet another individual surpr ised which you did notinclude pepsi to the ??worst??? l ist or even acknowledge their redesign.Other specific comments. The brand new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace all-around the wordmark is uneven. I just like the concept, however the execution is unhealthy. The aged 1 is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like improved in regards to the new Guitar Hero logo. The negative space in between the letters tends to make it virtually not possible to read for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it at all. The line breaks seem entirely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the word pollywogs??? on two lines, that has a hyphen?- ugh).Lastly, I’d enjoy to see your l ist of Identities which can be in desperate will need of a redesign. My #1 choose would be Verizon.

The entire point of [logo] style is just not to show off??? what you are able to do. It’s not about bells and wh istles. It is that form of considering that has a great deal of latest designers applying gradients on each style element as if they had some thing to accomplish with v isual communication. The lion drawing does notneed any longer pol ishing. From where by I stand, It will be at a level where by it might ONLY be utilized or d iscarded. In the event you suppose it requirements additional pol ishing ,that it can be too cartoony??? , or you have styl istic objections using the answer, then maybe you??? re while in the improper occupation. You??? re complaining about something extremely fundamental to fashionable graphic style. I have read from a number of the greats around the topic of style and I do believe that I have a cope with to the topic. It’s not your deal with, I understand that. What I do notunderstand is your design philosophy. It’s famous that you just assume Nike and Shell are fantastic brands. Maybe you??? re an Global Design zealot who thinks a grid would be the answer to each and every style trouble. Maybe that’s what you meant by pol ished? Or even you??? re into lots of pointless detail on the logo that should turn out to be no ise because it is shrunken down? I do notknow. My grammar is normally high-quality, thank you for asking. It really is my spelling that was off in a number of locations and for that, I apologize, but, you know, if my grammar was anywhere close as horrible as you claim then you??? d have had a very difficult time comprehending what I wrote. There will be almost nothing for you to react to. I do notknow about you, however it is really hard for me to have angry at gibber ish specifically when I’ve no notion what it means.
