Warriors land two more

After completing their UH recruiting trip this morning, offensive lineman Thomas Olds of San Clemente High and linebacker Brenden Daley of Ventura College accepted football scholarships from the Warriors.

Here’s Olds’ video: Olds.

Here’s Daley: Daley

In heavy, heavy rain, the Warriors practiced for two hours today. It was the Warriors’ first fully attended practice in two week. But the offense looked sharp, and the defense played well.

* * * * *

The Warriors canceled plans to attend the water park today.

There is a rule that UH will do everything as a team this week. That means the entire team has to go to each of the events. That’s a good theme, but it should be extended to the haka. I think the coaches need to perform it, too.

The Warriors checked into a hotel yesterday afternoon, and starting today they are on a strict schedule, which includes an 11:30 p.m. curfew.

Umbrellas are the order of the day. Wish I had rain boots. Hope it stops raining so hard by practice.

  2. Slugger December 19, 2010 8:16 am

Morning, ST! Great blog title for the season.

    bhf2,

    Practice later this morning.

  3. palolo December 19, 2010 8:18 am

Anyone know the Warrior practice schedule, and is it open to the public?

  4. haka December 19, 2010 8:18 am

  6. Pomai December 19, 2010 8:20 am

Come on Warriors this is nothing for a true warrior, practice hard, practice like your life depended on it, condition the body and the mind, in the last of the game you don’t want your mind gassed you need it just as sharpe as the start of the game.

  7. Pomai December 19, 2010 8:24 am

After the bowl game I think if I was coach Aranda I would make contact with Dick LeBeau, see if he would like a vaction to Hawaii after the season?

  8. rain man December 19, 2010 8:24 am

    RAIN! BOWS!

    RAIN! BOWS!

    RAIN! BOWS!

    RAIN! BOWS!

  9. gmahoney December 19, 2010 8:27 am

Where did this rain come from?

Mahalo to UHFan and James for a wonderful Christmas party. Nice to meet Kama Krab and Nohea, who scooped alot of prizes. As Kama said, he watches way too much football.

Oh and ST, if you want to help me cheat, SPEAK UP! I’m old!

  10. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:32 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

The Warriors wil make it rain all over Tulsa on Christams Eve! The heavens weep for them!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  11. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 8:43 am

    Palolo:

It’s 10 a.m. to noon, today through Wednesday.

Thursday’s walk-through is closed to the public.

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:46 am

Sooooo, um, Tsai, ya planning to watch a lil NFL on the tube today at say, ohhh, 11 AM?

A certain former Warrior is making his first start at offensive tackle for a team known as the um, J-E-T-S! 😉

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:48 am

That is of course assuming that the power is on in ur neck of the woods.

Oooooh, I see above that you’ll prolly be at practice.

  14. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 8:49 am

    DPK:

Unfortunately, duty calls, and I will be at football practice.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:49 am

The Jets coaches have a lot of faith in Hunter, it looks like.

  16. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 8:49 am

My phone and laptop are being charged as we speak, DPK.

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:53 am

Well, stay dry out there buddy. We appreciates your sacrifices.

  18. TChahng [DroidX] December 19, 2010 8:53 am

GO WARRIORS! Good morning ST. Good morning Tsai-Kos. Good morning rain.

  19. wafan December 19, 2010 8:53 am

    Good morning, everyone!

  20. wafan December 19, 2010 8:54 am

Geez. Am I back in the PNW?!?!

  21. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 8:54 am

I had a lot of faith in Hunter … until he gave up the two sacks on the last two plays last week. But he’s a good player, and I would never speak ill of someone who was nicknamed “The Terrorist” at UH.

  22. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 8:55 am

Kekaula called this morning. He went to Ala Moana. Power was out.

  23. Pomai December 19, 2010 8:55 am

Thanks to all the tsaikos who made last nights xmas party da bomb.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:56 am

Where are the respective teams practicing? Will you cover the other guys’ practices too?

  25. MattyBoy December 19, 2010 8:56 am

Today is their first fully-attended practice? Oh no. That doesnt sound too good. You think 5 fully attended practices is going to be ok for the Warriors?

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 8:59 am

That’s the same as any other game week, Matty. Hopefully it will.

  27. wafan December 19, 2010 9:01 am

Thank you to (J)J and UHFan808! Great job planning and a lot of fun last night. And, thank you to Myki and SJ for being the supporting cast members.

Tough tests last night, too. Dang, did not think I would need to actually think on vacation.

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  28. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 9:04 am

Not much the team could do because of finals.

  29. wafan December 19, 2010 9:06 am

Thanks, too, to the K & D Cab, Co.

  30. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 9:09 am

Tulsa’s last day of finals was last week Tuesday. That gave the Hurricane a few more fully attended practices.

  31. RainbowCliff December 19, 2010 9:11 am

#9:gmahoney: The rain is coming from here in LA. It’s been showering since Friday and will continue today and hopefully stop by Thursday. 7 days straight from night until morning. We are under flash flood watch as 5 to 10 inches have showered our streets and the foothill mountains. Forcasters initially attributed the big rainstorm to a “Pineapple Express”, a weather pattern that delivers moisture from the Hawaii area to the Pacific Coast.

Welcome to the RAINS good folks of Tsaiko fame as you should dry up faster as I have FOUR straight days of it !

    Good Morning !

  32. na koa mike December 19, 2010 9:11 am

Congratulations to the 13 Warrior graduates!

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 9:15 am

According to the weather radar it looks like the rain will be here for a long while.

  34. chawan_cut December 19, 2010 9:18 am

    congratulations to our warrior graduates!

rain, shine, the water park is still fun.

  35. RainbowCliff December 19, 2010 9:28 am

Da Punchbowl Kid: Howz It kind sir !

If your weather radar is accurate then you are in the same boat as I over here in Los Angeles. Won’t see dry weather until late Thursday afternoon. Friday is the Hawaii bowl as

am I to understand the team is going to practice in the rain FOUR straight days pending if you stop before we do ?

Hope the team can accomplish a good practice in the rain ?

  36. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 9:32 am

At least the weather will affect the other team as well… when does Tulsa arrive?

  37. jm2375 December 19, 2010 9:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Thanks to all the party planners. It was a great party but the games were kinda hard. What did you guys think, we’re in college and these were finals? 😆

Rain coming down here in buckets, although probably not as much as the A-house/ST neighborhood.

    Stay dry and safe everyone!

  38. Slugger December 19, 2010 9:42 am

K, gotta find my poncho & get ready to head out to practice & get wet. Now where is my umbrella…?

    Laters…

  39. jm2375 December 19, 2010 9:44 am

water park gonna be cold for da local boys.

$475K for a charter? 250 people? Who da he$$ did they bring?

  40. Lava December 19, 2010 9:46 am

I’m not so sure about practicing in this weather. At this point of the season, it seems more might be lost than gained.

  41. Committed Road Warrior December 19, 2010 9:54 am

    jm2375:

250 people sounds like the team and the band are coming in from Tulsa. If that’s true, then that’s better than what Nevada did last year when they participated in the Hawai’i Bowl…they flew the team to Hawai’i rented the UH band.

  42. josh December 19, 2010 9:57 am

Any good news on the recruiting front? I hear Darien Bryant is still a possibility? Would be HUGE to beat out Nebraska for a recruit.

  43. Pomai December 19, 2010 10:02 am

#41 – I think they must have hired the fumbler to make their travel plans. LOL

  44. NYUH December 19, 2010 10:06 am

At least one of Hunter’s sacks had to do with Sanchez’s poor pocket presence. Enjoying the Giants crush Vick.

  45. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 10:09 am

Maybe some of the fans came with the team. That way they could help subsidize the charter flight.

  46. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 10:09 am

I would auction off tickets to fly with the team for a bowl game.. why not?

  47. jm2375 December 19, 2010 10:18 am

CRW – someone posted that they’re not bringing their band or cheerleaders.

  48. Kazz December 19, 2010 10:20 am

Nevada rented our band last year?

Eh… had no idea, really never paid much attention to that game as there was NO ONE worth cheering for in the 2009 Hawaii Bowl.

  49. Pomai December 19, 2010 10:21 am

TU’s travel party is limited to about 100 players, coaches and their families, trainers, equipment managers, essential staff and a few key administrators and their families.

Tulsa arrives today in this rain storm! Precurser of things to come for them!!

  51. gigi-hawaii December 19, 2010 10:24 am

    Hi ST and Tsaikos!

Too bad Tulsa is arriving in this storm. They obviously were expecting sunshine. Still, it’s warmer here than there!!!

    Count your blessings, huh? LOL.

  52. bighilofan2 December 19, 2010 10:24 am

welcome to Hawaii, Tulsa and Yosemite Sam. Rain, tunda, lightnin… 😆

  53. bighilofan2 December 19, 2010 10:25 am

well, day might as well come Hilo. the weather is nice ova hea.

  54. A-House December 19, 2010 10:26 am

I thought the Hawaii Bowl payout was $750K per team.

Tulsa article says they will get $600K.

Yep, much to our surprise, Fumbler is hard at work at Tulsa!!

Tulsa only sold 800 of their 10,000 ticket allotment which means they gottas “eat” a bunch of tickets. I believe fans can purchase tickets and allot them to the military living in Hawaii. Pretty good x-mas present – free tickets to the Hawaii Bowl – if they are interested.

  55. A-House December 19, 2010 10:28 am

    Big Hilo:

I think we got just as much rain as you guys over there.

Hope the wahine basketball game tonight is not rained out.

  56. Kekoa December 19, 2010 10:28 am

Jm2375 ~ Thanks to the party planners *Exams* – my GPA plunged to a sizzling 1.0!

Can I apply for an academic exemption?

  57. Ralph December 19, 2010 10:28 am

Tulsa is arriving on a good day. After a 10+ hour travel there is nothing like crashing in bed with the sound of rain drops and wind blowing outside.

  58. d1島 December 19, 2010 10:37 am

The Tulsa World article doesn’t say anything about TU or C-USA eating the cost of unsold tickets. It only says the 800 that were sold are plus money.

Tulsa has 10,000 tickets priced at $40 each. As per C-USA policy, the Hurricane would get to keep the first $100,000 of any ticket sales and half of the remainder, which is split with the league.

But because travel costs to the islands are so prohibitive, the Hurricane has sold only about 800 tickets. Still, that amounts to $32,000 on the plus side, along with anything the Hurricane might receive later from C-USA’s bowl revenue surplus.

Participating bowl teams receive one-eighth each of the final amount and non-participating schools receive 1/24th each.

But TU must avoid cost overruns. For travel to Hawaii, C-USA allows 100 rooms ($189 per room per night before taxes) and $10,000 daily for meals. Anything beyond that falls on the Hurricane’s tab. That probably explains why the school isn’t sending its roughly 100-member band or spirit squad.

TU’s travel party is limited to about 100 players, coaches and their families, trainers, equipment managers, essential staff and a few key administrators and their families.

  59. Committed Road Warrior December 19, 2010 10:38 am

    jm2375:

From Pomai’s linked article, the phrase “a few key administrators and their families” probably accounts for the remainder of the travel party, and how they ended up with 220 people going.

Probably also explains why they chartered a Boeing 767 that’s currently enroute to HNL, as I’m sure none of them would want to make a fuel stop on the West Coast on the way:

    Kekoa – I took an “incomplete”. 😀

  61. Ralph December 19, 2010 10:44 am

heavy rains expected through Monday, that leaves Tuesday and Wednesday as the two best days for UH to hold practices with a walk thru on Thursday. With thunder showers expected it is not worth the risk of having players out on the field should lightning strike.

  62. jojo ® December 19, 2010 10:44 am

hey, looks like I got a swimming pool!

  63. GRM December 19, 2010 10:45 am

Rainbow Cliff – RE: #35: 4 days of rain – that’s nothing!! Couple of years ago, we had 40 days and 40 nights of rain! – NO KIDDING! Good thing we didn’t need Noah’s Ark.

  64. Ralph December 19, 2010 10:50 am

$10K per day for meals, $100 per person per diem, a good week for Hawaii’s restaurants. Three buffets a day per player, hey, these guys are eating more than most tsaikos.

  65. kawika49 December 19, 2010 10:58 am

#64, they may eat more, but not better. They don’t have turkey tails and malasadas.

  66. tommui December 19, 2010 11:00 am

GOOD MORNING HAWAII – well, Hawaii in the morning is better than anywhere else!

Went down Kapiolani Blvd. around 9:15am this morning – McCully had (I think) a broken water main and traffic had to be rerouted from Kapiolani to McCUlly (makai) into Kalakaua which was a bit of a mess.

Surprisingly, the traffic was light. Went to Office Depot at Ward Center – extremely light and hardly anyone in the store. Then shot over to Barnes & Noble in Kahala. Parking galore! Wonder how Ala Moana and (downstairs) Kahala Mall are doing in this rain?

  67. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 11:02 am

    bhf2 –

Howzit beeg braddah! As usual, the rain seems to be missing Hilo and the Big Island, the places that need it the mostest!

Tsai should get a medal for making practice today. I drove past Manoa twice in the last hour and the rain is HAMMERING!!!

  68. jm2375 December 19, 2010 11:05 am

    dere goes my dish signal….

Mike Vick of Philadelphia is putting on a SHOW !

Trailing 24 to 3 at half time he has led his team back with

his scrambling abilities to tie the game at 31. The young man

My grass has a sprinkler system but your express has me going outside shutting off the

timing mechanism as DEFINETLY it will save me on the water bill as that is a good thing.

One thing for sure it has kept me INSIDE to talk to you GREAT folks as that Ralph is

a TRUE pleasure in it self !

Rest assure kind sir IF you need a good plot of grade one grass I’ll mail mines over to you

knowing that you and the express were good in showering me this Christmas Vacation !

  84. Another rainy day in Paradise, but don’t forget that when the sun comes out, there’ll be a gorgeous Rainbow!!! Hopefully, the rain will hold off during tomorrow evening’s lunar eclipse.

If you’re going to be cruising the Internet today, don’t forget to stop by the Island Innovation Fund website to explore the 180+ preliminary grant applications. Some are somewhat weird while others have some very strong legs.

The public comment period ends at 5 pm on Thursday, December 23. Click my name and don’t forget to visit our proposal on page 7.

Staff at the Hawai`i Community Foundation will selected the finalists who will submit a full-on detailed grant in January.

RE Friday’s T-Gate: As of this writing, about 20 people have expressed a desire for a freshly-made malassadas. Once we open up the container – the dough is made by Agnes’ Portugues Bakery – it has to be used up within the hour so we cannot take home any leftover dough because it has “died.”

Yes, we can make all of them within half an hour or so, but if they don’t get eaten right away, they won’t taste really great. Malassadas are meant to be eaten within minutes of being made. But if we get 30 or so by Tuesday evening, then we’ll go ahead and make them.

Off to (house) and (shuffling & sorting paper) work. Back this evening.

  85. RainbowCliff December 19, 2010 11:37 am

  86. d1島 December 19, 2010 11:39 am

That punt was certainly another classic example of visualization in action. I can well imagine Coughlin telling that rookie, “don’t kick it straight to DeSean Jackson.”

The guy keeps repeating it in his mind, “Don’t kick it straight to DeSean Jackson. Don’t kick it straight to DeSean Jackson. Don’t kick it straight to DeSean Jackson.”

Next thing you know his brain sees the image of kicking it straight to DeSean Jackson and “Voila!”

    😆

  87. A-House December 19, 2010 11:40 am

    d1:

remember the Sugar Bowl and Fumbler who returned over 4,000 tickets because HE FELT THAT HAWAII FANS WOULD NOT SUPPORT THE TEAM AND DID NOT WANT UHAD TO PAY FOR THE “EXTRA TICKETS”!

Ha, without even doing a very simple survey, like how many fans are going or would go, tickets were returned and sold to Georgia. UH tried to get back the 4,000 but fell short. Acutally, over 17,500 fans in Hawaii made the trip to NOLA as many found their own sources for tickets. INcluding Hawaii fans from all over the mainland, it was estimated that over 25,000 Hawaii fans were in NOLA for the game.

Tickets alloted to a participating team is responsible for their allotment; whether sold or not!

I would think that would be the headline.

Really raining hard in Liliha/Nuuanu area since midnight. My street has a fast moving stream. Not deep enough for a surfboard w/skeg, but an air mattress has possibilities…

Too bad I’m older and wiser…and no air mattress large enough. 😐

  100. Pride. December 19, 2010 12:26 pm

Tulsa Hurricanes will feel at home in this hurricane like weather. I wonder, when was the last time that Tulsa had a hurricane in their area? Perhaps the Tulsa Tornado may have been more appropriate.

  101. papajoe2 December 19, 2010 12:27 pm

Too rainy for practice? One of my friends once told me that he would set his alarm for 3 am every morning to do several hundred situps. He said that he knew that his rivals were asleep and wasn’t working out at that time, so he had an advantage over them.

  102. tommui December 19, 2010 12:31 pm

MOMO – belated best wishes on your anniversary.

We celebrate (?) our 50th next April – strike the “celebrate” 🙂

  103. Old School Dave December 19, 2010 12:44 pm

Rain? No problem. Just move practice to the Warrior’s new in-door practice facility 🙂

  104. jeezy33 December 19, 2010 12:53 pm

LB Brenden Daley commits to Hawaii! Nice pick up

  105. jm2375 December 19, 2010 12:57 pm

Only in Hawaii would this get by an editor… 😆

During his Hawaii football career, Blaze Soares was a fierce linebacker.

But yesterday, his legs were wet ramen.

  106. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2010 1:13 pm

They use “bolied spaghetti” for that metaphor in other parts of the country. Local style for a local guy!

    “Me crush ’em!” –

    Blaze Soares

  107. al December 19, 2010 1:17 pm

  115. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 1:40 pm

Thank goodness for the new turf at UH. I mean… you wouldn’t want to be on the mound on a wet day like this… except to slip and slide in the mud like they did in 2007.

  116. Ralph December 19, 2010 1:47 pm

MIH when was the rivals posting, states he is waiting for his first offer. The video shows a dominant player, but no offers, was this posting early in the season or last years?

Ralph… dunno..dabowman from Sportshawaii and http://forums.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=219&f=1136&t=6905766 is saying so.

  118. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 2:14 pm

    Ralph!

Look at the top of this blog.. ST has added a by line.

  119. Ralph December 19, 2010 2:23 pm

I hope no one gets sick practicing in the rain cuz it was miserable driving in the rain and I can imagine what it would be like working out in this heavy down pour.

I wonder if slugger made it home safely, water must have been up to her knees.

  120. jeezy33 December 19, 2010 2:23 pm

Olds looks like a monster DT if you ask me. His you tube video has him at nose tackle blowing up guys

  121. Lava December 19, 2010 2:32 pm

I think it is starting to clear outside … never mind, it was a neighbor’s flashlight.

  122. Ralph December 19, 2010 2:36 pm

JETS Win! so where is Tsai?

  123. Ralph December 19, 2010 2:47 pm

  129. Slugger December 19, 2010 2:55 pm

Back from going to practice, walking around in the rain, lunch at Maple Garden. Gotta hit the shower.

Good spirited practice in the rain. The guys were ‘cheering’ when the rain would get real heavy. Lotta blessings!

One oddah guy there standing under his umbrella in the bleachers watching practice with me.

    GO WARRIORS!!! BEAT TULSA!!!

  130. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 2:57 pm

    slugger…

Weren’t you just getting over a cold a few days ago?

  131. Pcwarrior December 19, 2010 3:04 pm

Welcome Mr Olds, you look like a very gifted athlete that can play either way. But that mean streak you have as a D lineman could transition into a long career at the next level. UH has alot of O lineman in the NFL!

Also, welcome Mr Daley! I like the way you attack the gaps and react to the ball! Good speed and good reaction! Might be used a hybrid at DE ala

    Paipai!

    Welcome the WARRIOR Nation!

  132. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 3:10 pm

“…the offense looked sharp, and the defense played well.”

    ugh?????

  133. MattyBoy December 19, 2010 3:15 pm

Hahaha HawaiianSun! That’s exactly the same thing that I’ve said.

  134. eu wow game card December 19, 2010 3:17 pm

  135. sports for fun December 19, 2010 3:24 pm

does anyone know about the intentions of a wr/db from a high school with the name tyler, i believe? someone posted his youtube clips here a couple of times, and i was really excited when watching him play. has that young man committed to anywhere yet? does anyone know who the heck i’m talking about? lol

  136. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 3:29 pm

First full practice in 15 days in a full-on manoa rainpour….c’mon.

Prep against opponent–O n D; conditioning; and timing?

We are playing Tulsa, who beat 4-bowl bound teams. By contrast, our last 5 victories came against teams with a combined 15-48 record.

  137. sports for fun December 19, 2010 3:32 pm

found out the wr/db player’s name, tyler trosin. has he committed anywhere yet? who’s on his radar?

  138. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 3:38 pm

heard #3 trosin going to oregon state. great future talent at DB or receiver, he is awesome and hits w a hammer. plays w david graves bro at folsom.

  139. sports for fun December 19, 2010 3:42 pm

bummer. would have loved to see him in the run n shoot offense. thanks hawaiiansun.

  140. jm2375 December 19, 2010 3:42 pm

I’m gonna say it again one last time –

WHAT PART OF STUDENT-ATHLETE DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND?!!

  142. al December 19, 2010 3:49 pm

    nice job recruiting.

one can see how the quality of the new members are on the upswing. we are starting to get size, speed, and size.

  143. sports for fun December 19, 2010 3:51 pm

mih, from the looks of it, we weren’t in the running for his talents. oh well.

  144. al December 19, 2010 3:52 pm

    note to our local boys….

no wait too long if you want to be a warrior. we do not have 25 scholarships this year. we are half way done already with the limited number of slots.

this staff wants the local boys, but, they can’t wait for ever. the recruiting processes has changed immensely over the years here and abroad. more and more schools want to lock up their recruit rosters by early january.

  145. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:01 pm

    hawaiiansun & MattyBoy,

    You gotta have been there.

  146. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:03 pm

I would think if our receivers can make receptions in the rain & the D make interceptions while it’s pouring, they’ll do well when it’s sunny & dry.

  147. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 4:08 pm

    Brenden Daley

    Welcome Warrior. Welcome. welcome. welcome.

you made my day. and tell you straight. I am a WARRIOR fan. and got da mout to bck da tup. yessisiree I do.

  149. kawika49 December 19, 2010 4:12 pm

BHF2…been sunny all day here in Keaau.

  150. Derek December 19, 2010 4:16 pm

Recruits so far who have verbally commtted:

    1) Trevor Davis – WR

    2) Chris Gant – Slot

    3) Cecil “Oh see the Deer” Doe – WR

    4) Ben “Mountain” Dew – OL

    5) Ellis “Island” Henderson – WR or DB

    6) Will “The Thrill” Gregory – RB

    7) Brenden Daley – MLB

    8) Thomas Olds – OL or DL

    9) Blake “Crocodile” Muir – OL or DE

Per Al, gotta get the local prospects soon. Time is getting short. I think we are now in the dead period where coaches cannot contact the recruits until after the New Years. But, recruits can commit now if they want to. Darien Bryant committed and then de-committed from Nebraska so he’s still thinking. Still looking for a couple of defensive backs, terrorizing and relentless pass rusher, defensive linemen, great kick returner, and a holy grail. I agree,

good size we are getting. A 6’5″ 255 middle line backer is huge. Good speed too. Somehow, we have to stumble on a couple of guys who are in the 4.3 range. Then again, everybody is looking for those kinds of guys. Getting a guy that plays like a Chad Owens who can return kicks would be huge. What players in the 2011 class are already in the program and who are joining the program in January (grayshirts)? Friel? Anguay? Lau? Sellers?

    Others?

  151. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:19 pm

Hmmmm, there was another guy at practice today and he doesn’t appear to be either Olds or Daley. Interesting….

  152. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:20 pm

Welcome to both Thomas Olds and Brenden Daley!

  153. al December 19, 2010 4:38 pm

derek…we need to add to any list stering “silva” jackson and darryl “darryl, darryl, darryl….” mcbride.

  154. al December 19, 2010 4:39 pm

slugger we had lunch from maple garden aka yen king, too.

    only thing we had takeout.

  155. al December 19, 2010 4:43 pm

amazing lunches there…besides the ten buck buffet that is dollar for dollar the best kept lunch secret.

we order two choices of main dish, rice or small chinese chicken salad, with hot sour soup for 8.25. and no can finish. at dinner time it’s a buck more.

  156. al December 19, 2010 4:43 pm

slugger….if you took pictures i’ll help you id them..

  157. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:48 pm

    al,

Decided to walk across the street for lunch since I was wandering around the neighborhood in the rain and wanted something faster than me cooking lunch. Great bitter melon & pork, spareribs (two different ways), and fried chicken wings even though I was the last one there for lunch off the buffet.

So, who would the young man be who was there today? Good looking guy… 🙂

  158. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:51 pm

    al,

No pictures today, no camera & too much rain. By the time I got to shelter in the Athletic complex, the young man was standing there waiting to talk to ??? He was out on the field during practice under his umbrella. Coaches were saying hello to him. Maybe ST knows, but not at liberty to say.

  159. al December 19, 2010 4:52 pm

    derek

the dead period does not allow any face to face contact. however, a coach may call

“The only permissible communications during a dead period are phone calls (limited by NCAA regulations to one call per week) and correspondence.”

    one call per week…..yah, right.

  160. al December 19, 2010 4:52 pm

then we’ll have o summon the little birdie…

  161. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:54 pm

I’ve been impressed with Darryl McBride after seeing him this summer. Sterling Jackson, Darius Bright, Bubba! Can’t wait to see them in the game.

  162. Slugger December 19, 2010 4:56 pm

Hope Kevin Spain’s shoulder is healing ok. Saw him in street clothes at practice. Since he’s a medical redshirt, I guess he doesn’t wear a uni yet, huh.

  163. al December 19, 2010 5:06 pm

i hope graves is geting a lot of reps too.

  164. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 5:09 pm

I am liking the recruits this year. … about 8 more openings left… just 8… not a whole lot… ONLY 8… hope the local boys are reading this… 8…..

  165. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 5:22 pm

@146, you still havent said anything about O n D prep for Tulsa, conditioning and timing….just, “we should have been there”…”they look great in a torential downpour”…. doesnt say much…..did i miss something?

  166. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 5:26 pm

    9) Blake “Crocodile” Muir – OL or DE

Gray shirts… not on roster … RANDOM order

    1) Te’o, B. Iosefa – RB

    2) Samson Anguay – Slot

    3) Corey Lau – Slot

    4) Calen Friel – DT

    5) Ipulasi Eselu (grayshirt) – DE

    6) David Katina (grayshirt) – DE

    7) Marcus Umu – Safety

    8) Borden – Safety

    9) Mike Sellers – CB

    Others… ???

  167. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 5:28 pm

If we only have 25 initials and there are 18? Doesn’t that only leave 7 open spots?

  168. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 5:29 pm

Daley a candidate for DE? We lose two starters–Umu and Purcell. prototype size and mobility for that position in our scheme.

  169. jeezy33 December 19, 2010 5:30 pm

I wouldnt be so sure Iosefa and Teo have offers

    no idea who borden is

  170. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 5:34 pm

Oops sorry.. I don’t think Borden should be on that list, either… Borden’s a player who’s no longer on the roster.

  171. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 5:38 pm

you never know about grayshirts until they enroll in JAN. Im sure MAC will ‘over’ book for a myriad of attritive contingencies. cant be certain either way until camp begins in AUG.

  172. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 5:39 pm

Borden is redshirting this season. He was injured.

  173. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 5:40 pm

    Borden is a walk-on.

  174. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2010 5:41 pm

    Ran into “The Franchise” today.

He said he is deciding among UH, Washington and Oregon State. Has a trip planned for Oregon State in a couple of weeks.

  175. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 5:44 pm

  176. Ralph December 19, 2010 5:50 pm

aren’t grey shirts counted for 2011, if so, we are at 17 if Borden is deleted from the #167 list. Al’s last estimate, we may have only 18 to give this recruiting class, almost complete.

  177. hawaiiansun December 19, 2010 5:55 pm

Im hoping Rolo adds more dimension next year to our running game by using our slots to run sweeps. sampson has good speed for that package. many teams are using the oregon spread to counter the flank-blitz. Troy sure looked good in demolishing Ohio….consequentially, the trojan perimeter-running game took pressure off the pocket.

Trojan frosh QB, Conrad Robinson, looked great.

  178. Ralph December 19, 2010 5:57 pm

all of our local recruits are from the 2010 class who grey shirted, no hint of any current HS leaning toward UH for the 2011 class that is filling rapidly with west coast players.

  179. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 5:57 pm

    Ralph…

I thought al was saying 18 after the gray shirts are counted.

  180. jeezy33 December 19, 2010 6:00 pm

    Who is the Franchise?

  181. Ralph December 19, 2010 6:04 pm

MIH 18 + 8 grey shirts gives UH 24, then we should have 10 left to make 25

  182. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 6:30 pm

    Ralph..

We have 8 gray shirts about to go on scholie..

    25 max initials – 8= 17 left.

We have 9 commitments, so 17-9 = 8 scholies left.

If, however, you are correct and we already have 68 underclassmen on scholies.. then we might be near the limit and have only 2 openings left.. yikes!

  183. Ralph December 19, 2010 6:34 pm

maybe some on your current list will grey shirt, feels like a ponzi scheme, award new scholarships to the old recruits, delay the new recruits until next spring in 2012.

  184. From BREAKING NEWS

David M. Louie, a trial lawyer and managing partner with the Honolulu law firm of Roeca Louie & Hiraoka, was nominated today by Gov. Neil Abercrombie to be Hawaii’s next attorney general.

Louie, 59, will take the next several weeks wrapping up issues with his firm and then will tackle legal issues ranging from transitioning to a state appointed Board of Education to unfunded federal mandates to Medicare and Medicaid to college football’s Bowl Championship Series, Abercrombie said.

STEPHEN – Please internview this guy ASAP, please.

  185. Ralph December 19, 2010 6:42 pm

what ever happened to all of our prior recruits that had to start out at Arizona Western?

  186. A-House December 19, 2010 6:52 pm

    Olds:

beside the obvious size and strength – he can play both guard positions – looks very strong with the driving force of his lower body.

i tink he should stay at OL and play along side of Jordan L and Sean S in 2 years.

  187. Ralph December 19, 2010 6:54 pm

Na Wahine playing UCLA on 1420 at 7 p.m. tonight

  188. Ralph December 19, 2010 6:58 pm

Janice said that it was packed this afternoon despite the downpour!

  190. Ballpicker December 19, 2010 7:15 pm

Is that Josh pacheco doing wbb play by play?

  191. Slugger December 19, 2010 7:15 pm

There was a baby party there for lunch. They left about 2 pm.

  192. al December 19, 2010 7:36 pm

yes, i too hope that the franchise picks hawaii. he could influence others to do the same.

  193. al December 19, 2010 7:38 pm

mike sellers is a walk on at this point is what i am being told.

  194. al December 19, 2010 7:38 pm

  195. al December 19, 2010 7:45 pm

  197. Pcwarrior December 19, 2010 7:49 pm

  198. Ralph December 19, 2010 7:49 pm

hopefully BigHilo, BigIsland Kirk, Kawika and Hank are in the audience cheering the Na Wahine.

  199. Ralph December 19, 2010 7:51 pm

    Pacheco is the broadcaster.

7-21, 1-9 3 pt attempts, about 15 TO, if UH can control the TO the game becomes closer

    Franchise?!?!?!

May we please have a clarification on who the “Franchise” is?

My best bet is that it is Paulay Asiata out of St. Louis???

  201. Derek December 19, 2010 7:52 pm

Is Thor Salanoa will be counted as a scholarship or will he be a walk-on. I was under the understanding that he has some work to do yet before he can join the Warriors? I also believe Tank Hopkins, who is redshirting because of an injury this year will also be counted on to compete at one of the cornerback positions or even as a nickel back. Hopkins is already on scholarship from one of the previous recruting classes. Also, is Lutu still a walk-on or will he get a scholarship? Maybe he can earn one with his play in the spring and the fall practices.

  202. al December 19, 2010 7:53 pm

    pcwarrior

to be able to attend the walk on tryouts one must first be enrolled in the fall semester at manoa and fulltime student status. so, he is eligible and got injured later on therefore, he took a redshirt season.

  203. al December 19, 2010 7:55 pm

salanoa has to first enroll at manoa. something that he is working towards this past semester and the next. a summer session may also be part of his agenda. then, i believe he will be an eligible walk on.

  204. al December 19, 2010 7:57 pm

201…i think you need to guess again. i could be wrong. my franchise is another guy though.

  205. Ballpicker December 19, 2010 8:07 pm

His doing a good job considering he kills me during his noonshow to the point where in won’t even listen to a word.

  206. LizKauai (macbook) December 19, 2010 8:11 pm

    Welcome Daley and Olds!! Warriors!!!

  207. al December 19, 2010 8:13 pm

if brenden daley stays at linebacker…poor papa jim will be blowing his mind in the booth not knowing if it was daley or daily-lyles that made the hit.

    check that!

  208. al December 19, 2010 8:21 pm

i don’t know if this is a complaint or what?

it is sad that one has to go to an outside source to get up to date information on warrior basketball. probably the biggest news concerning the team is hiram thompson’s injury.

so to find current news regarding this, i go to dayton morinaga’s warrior insider site to find out what is up. dayton was the ha’s basketball beat writer until the star bulletin’s consumption of said paper left him without a job.

    yah, i miss morinaga’s musing.

  209. RedZone December 19, 2010 8:22 pm

I am hoping for a DE commit from the upper campus.

  210. al December 19, 2010 8:22 pm

got to talking briefly with bo barnes and his parents today. nice family. bo’s a real quiet kid but really polite.

  211. al December 19, 2010 8:23 pm

    redzone…ditto.

  212. protector December 19, 2010 8:25 pm

Aloha and Mahalo to all of the new members (and members-to-be) of the Warrior Ohana. Many look like they will be impact players that will solidify the depth and quality of the team. I look forward to continued great things. I also hope it puts to rest the doubters that said the faithful ones were willing to settle for mediocrity with our coaching staff. I wonder how all that

‘crow’ and ‘humble pie’ taste? Oh I forgot…those people have memories of convenience about saying all those acrimonious and absurd things.

  213. al December 19, 2010 8:34 pm

trying to sort out the number of scholies left will drive you batty. don’t try it because it will all be a moot point when the dust settles.

    you’ll see.

just sit back and enjoy what is taking place. we will witness a recruit class that tops last year’s very good class.

creative recruiting and implementation will be the rule of the day.

  214. al December 19, 2010 8:35 pm

    where did slugger go?

i had an answer for her.

  215. mauiwarrior December 19, 2010 8:38 pm

    is juda da franchise?

  216. Ralph December 19, 2010 8:38 pm

54-31 UCLA with aboout 7 minutes to go

  217. al December 19, 2010 8:48 pm

    men’s basketball recruiting……

so now that salter and coleman left the team. what that means to gib arnold and his army is that he’ll return 8 scholarship players next year. which translates to having 5 scholarships available for this year’s recruiting class numbers.

during the early signing period two potentially great high schoolers were inked. with a pressing need for more point guard types and another big for the future does gib go after two more players or run the deck picking up a total of five this year?

that would leave the following year with only one scholarship available to replace for the then departing zane “drain” johnson.

perhaps saving one scholie would be wise.

  218. al December 19, 2010 8:49 pm

    mauiwarrior….that would be my franchise.

  219. Slugger December 19, 2010 8:58 pm

Hey, I have never seen “50 First Dates” which is on TV. K, I caught up now.

Pwactice tomorree…(hillbilly Bugs Bunny pidgin; I can use it cuz I lived in them thar hills).

  220. al December 19, 2010 9:20 pm

    storybook ending…

miah’s crossing over to hoops could very well be the fairytale come true. it’s been his life long dream to ball at the college level. coming out of high school he opted for football when no big deal basketball programs offered. wise choice i always thought.

but, now he’ll get his jiminy cricket adventure. i really hope that by season’s end he is making a significant contribution to the basketball team.

wow, that would be the stuff that dreams are made of.

  225. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 10:20 pm

    howzit Tsaikos.

UCLA pounded da wahines tonight. keisha was da bright spot. i hope the Wahine recruit Paleka Kennedy. 6-3″ could be a big development with coaching.

  226. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 10:20 pm

his name is Brenden, not Branden. 😀

  227. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 10:34 pm

    madeinhawaii

loved your post in the paper. so true.

  228. whitey December 19, 2010 10:36 pm

I didn’t want to say much about Hiram’s injury, but imho, his return to immediate competition does not look good. I don’t know much about which trainer is assigned to mbb, but the team needs to have a doctor whenever they play. this should also apply to wbb.

  229. Slugger December 19, 2010 10:58 pm

    al,

If you watched the KGMB 10 pm sports news, you’ll see the visitor talking to ST while Moniz was being interviewed after practice.

(Thanks Chawan_cut! We could use your compiled news video tonight.)

  230. al December 19, 2010 11:00 pm

whitey…no one wants to volunteer as team doc for bb.

    sweet Senior dreams!

  232. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 11:06 pm

Thomas Olds. welcome welcome welcome. thanks for the commit to be a Warrior!

Same o same to Brenden Daley. besides da lightnin and tunda I’m hearing so much about, but neva experience yet today, you two is da best news yet!

plus, nobody got hurt today, and day played in da rain. right on, Warriors!

  233. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 11:08 pm

i neva see, but i heard, and i saw dat game weah da bruddaz waz huddled in da freezn rain. now dat was fri$$n nuts! our rain…. pftttt….

  234. BigHiloFan2 December 19, 2010 11:09 pm

    al,

so… you gonna answa Slugger’s inquiry about da ID?

  235. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 11:20 pm

    BigHiloFan2:

You must be referring to the graduation comment. I wish all responders would stick to congratulatory remarks instead of such demeaning remarks on such an auspicious day. My father used to say, “If you don’t have anything good to say.. don’t say anything at all.”

  236. whitey December 19, 2010 11:21 pm

al, that is not good. imho, hiram’s injury required immediate medical attention that night and probably only a doctor would be able to diagnose the injury. not treating the injury right away will probably end up with more pain and slower recovery. jd might check with hoohiki the next time any uh team plays on maui. hoohiki may have some suggestions.

  237. whitey December 19, 2010 11:29 pm

al, my last thoughts on hiram’s injury. it is worse than one dink or clunk and taping (as ralph suggested ain’t gonna work). he is definitely in need of someone like your masseur freind, ed. i truly hope i am wrong on my observations of this, but i’ll feel better when i see hiram back playing.

  238. whitey December 19, 2010 11:32 pm

b miles is a good point guard and after this week’s classic, he will be a much, much smoother point guard. he has great upside potential.

  239. Slugger December 19, 2010 11:32 pm

    Good night, Tsaikos!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    GO WAHINE!!!

  240. al December 19, 2010 11:33 pm

  241. al December 19, 2010 11:34 pm

bighilo….too late now she went moe moe.

  242. whitey December 19, 2010 11:34 pm

ok, back to the warriors. know that practice was rain drenched, but could be a blessing because you neva know what it will be like till game time. i hope no rain, but this will get them prepared for any weather.

  243. al December 19, 2010 11:35 pm

he needs some shiny noni leaves.

  244. madeinhawaii December 19, 2010 11:37 pm

With smaller teams I would think that it’s so much harder to find that right balance and get the kind of team chemistry and talent you want with the limited number of scholarships.

  245. SteveM December 19, 2010 11:45 pm

whitey — sounds like you and hoohiki have met? Great! Lots of shy Tsai-kos on Maui… 🙂

  246. whitey December 19, 2010 11:47 pm

    howzit guys.

i dunno nuff fo contribute anyting concrete about hiram an his injury, but a good rubdown always helps. 😀 just hopin dat brudda comes good sooner.

  248. whitey December 19, 2010 11:49 pm

met walter watanabe before game. he is very pleasant and easy to talk to. good man.

  249. whitey December 19, 2010 11:53 pm

bhf2, there you go!!!! good solution!!! but you have to believe in it and not ignore it as an alternative. plus no pharmaceutical drugs, just good old natural touch.

  250. Hoohiki December 19, 2010 11:56 pm

whitey, the team doctor was there and tended to Hiram immediately. Unfortunately, if it was decided that Hiram needed imaging studies right away, Lahaina does not provide access to that after 7 pm and he would need to be taken to Maui Memorial Hospital. Hiram probably got his MRI already when he got back. Hope the report doesn’t show anything serious.

Hope all is well with you…

  251. whitey December 19, 2010 11:58 pm

we had a guy here on maui who could do natural healing and was used by players from the oakland raiders. he was a heavy equipment operator by trade, did the healing after work, and asked for no money. he believed he was blessed to help others and if he accepted money he would lose his powers. he passed away a few years ago, but there are many like him and if you believe in them, they can truly help with some of your medical problems.

  252. whitey December 20, 2010 12:00 am

stevem, you see, i don’t have to know who hoohiki is, but this tsaiko truly knows what happened.

  253. whitey December 20, 2010 12:03 am

hoohiki, thanks for the explanation and know you shared the same thoughts on the injury. any injury to the back is major and like i said previously, i’ll feel better when i see hiram playing ball again. thanks for the info.

Count me as another man or woman surpr ised that you just did notinclude pepsi around the ??worst??? l ist as well as acknowledge their redesign.Other distinct comments. The new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace about the wordmark is uneven. I such as the idea, however the execution is negative. The previous 1 is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like far better concerning the new Guitar Hero logo. The damaging area in between the letters helps make it practically unachievable to learn for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it whatsoever. The line breaks seem entirely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the phrase pollywogs??? on two lines, having a hyphen?- ugh). Finally, I would adore to see your l ist of Identities that happen to be in desperate have to have of a redesign. My #1 pick could be Verizon.

I have to say that I agree using the sentiments about having AOL as range one particular. The comments posted along facet it sum it up nicely, that it does next to nothing to strengthen the brand, but only adds confusion.Out of the perfect rebrands inside l ist, I’d set SyFy at the high. Initially I hated the title, because I thought they did it ??just since,??? when in fact they’d to alter their identify resulting from being unable to legally use Sci-fi.??? Now fairly than coming up which has a entire new name that no one would know- and potentially lose a good deal with the already built in SciFi??? brand- they stuck together with the old name which has a little bit of word play. I can nonetheless call SyFy Sci-fi when it arrives up, and that helps make me satisfied.

Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.
