Super Sunday

By Stephen Tsai on February 6, 2011

Of all of the championships in sports, the Super Bowl is the fairest one of all.  Unlike the NBA, NHL and major leagues, the NFL’s title is decided in a one-game showdown on a neutral site. There’s no home-field advantage, and certainly no change in the post-season format, like the NBA going from 2-2-1-1-1 series to 2-3-2 for the final round.  Sure. the NCAA has fine tournaments and neutral-site championships, but their participations are based, significantly, on rankings and selection […]

The Salas Effect

By Stephen Tsai on February 5, 2011

Darius Bright is 6 feet 4 and Allen Sampson is about 5-6, but they share the same position, which really is two positions, slotback and wideout. This spring practice, which opens March 9, most of the UH receivers will practice at both positions.  Call it the Salas Effect, in tribute to former Warrior Greg Salas, who started his UH career as a wideout and finished as a slotback. Following the 2008 season, Greg McMackin’s first as UH head coach, it […]

The search

By Stephen Tsai on February 4, 2011

There have been a lot of interesting names popping up in UH’s search for a successor to Chris Tormey, who coordinated the special teams and coached the safeties the past two years. Tormey is now at Washington State.  But a reader made an interesting suggestion: Kim McCloud, a former UH defensive back. A Waco television station reported that McCloud will not be retained as secondary coach at Baylor. McCloud, who also has coached at Nevada, is a nice fit for […]

Star search

College coaches often like to say how, unlike their NFL counterparts, they are not able to just sign free agents to replenish rosters. Not quite so, at least for one day. Yesterday, the Warriors conducted tryouts for walk-on candidates already in enrolled at UH-Manoa. About 50 took part in the 40-yard sprints, 225-pound bench reps, and orientation session. The player who drew the most attention was Kana Silva, younger brother of former UH safety Mana Silva. Kana Silva was hand-timed […]

Top corner, Kahuku pair commit to UH

By Stephen Tsai on February 1, 2011

Cornerback Mike Edwards, who played five games as a freshman for Tennessee in 2009, said he has accepted a UH scholarship.  As a Glenville (Ohio) High senior, Edwards received offers from Tennessee, Michigan and Illinois, among others. He signed with Tennessee, and played as  a true freshman.  But in November of 2009, he was among four Volunteers arrested and charged on an accusation of armed robbery. The four were subsequently dismissed from the team. But the charges against Edwards were […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 31, 2011

The Warriors today secured a verbal commitment from defensive end Craig Cofer of Grossmont College in San Diego.  Cofer said he is 6 feet 5, 250 pounds and is capable of bench pressing 275 pounds 13 times.  “I love the weather and the beach and family aspect,” Cofer told the Warrior Beat. * * * * *  The next few days will be big for the Warriors as they solidify commitments from recruits. The coaches today will meet to discuss […]

Warriors get LB; Ching back on air

By Stephen Tsai on January 30, 2011

The Warriors have secured a commitment from linebacker Penitito Faalologo of Fagaitua High in American Samoa.  Faalologo is 6 feet 1 and 220 pounds, according to his coach, Pooch Taase.  Faalologo visited Hawaii a week ago before going to Austin, Texas, where he will compete in Wednesday’s USA vs. The World all-star football game. Taase said Faalologo will sign his letter of intent with UH that morning, the first day recruits may put their commitments in writing.  Faalologo also is […]
