Top corner, Kahuku pair commit to UH

Cornerback Mike Edwards, who played five games as a freshman for Tennessee in 2009, said he has accepted a UH scholarship.

As a Glenville (Ohio) High senior, Edwards received offers from Tennessee, Michigan and Illinois, among others. He signed with Tennessee, and played as  a true freshman.

But in November of 2009, he was among four Volunteers arrested and charged on an accusation of armed robbery. The four were subsequently dismissed from the team. But the charges against Edwards were eventually dropped. He faces no criminal charges.

Edwards spent the past year at Coffeyville College in Kansas, where he attended school but did not play football. He has three years to play three UH seasons.

Edwards, who is 5 feet 10 and 170 pounds, can run 40 yards in 4.48 seconds and 100 meters in 10.4 seconds

All-State linebacker Ben Mamea and safety Tigi Hill of Kahuku High have decided to accept football scholarships from the Warriors.

Both will sign letters of intent at a ceremony at the school tomorrow at 7:15 a.m.

Mamea is 6 feet and 228 pounds. Hill is 6-3 and 215 pounds.

The Warriors will open spring training March 7, with the first spring practice set for March 9. They will practice for a couple of weeks, going on hiatus during spring break, then come back  for a couple of more weeks of practice. The spring game is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 15. (It would be kind of cool if a tax-drop-off booth were available at the game.)

Last year’s spring practice started in late March, with the 14 practices and game spread over five weeks.

UH has scheduled a news conference for 2 p.m. tomorrow to announce its 2011 recruiting class. We’ll have updates of signings, of course, throughout the day.

* * * * * *

Former UH center John Estes, now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, is in town for another week. With the uncertainty of the NFL’s collective-bargaining agreement, Estes is considering training under Chad Ikei in Arizona to remain in shape. He spent the entire 2010 season on the injured reserve list, but now has been moved to the active roster.

Former UH linebacker Brashton Satele also is in town. Satele was on the New York Jets’ practice squad for two months before being signed to the main roster.

Well, I guess the Pro Bowl players had a good time last week. Told that he would not be allowed to plug his iPod into the restaurant speakers, Terrell Suggs decided to make his own music — and fun:

Heads up you recruit guys …better shop for some new clothes.. weather alert!

“Snow and ice fell to varying degrees from Colorado to Maine, tornadoes were possible in the South, and the weather disrupted the lives of millions. Multiple airports were at least temporarily shut down due to ice, including in Dallas — the destination for thousands trying to get to Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Flight-tracking service FlightAware.com said airline cancellations had already topped 7,700 through Wednesday.”
Have fun up there, leave your slippas and surf boards home…

  22. 702WarriorFan February 1, 2011 9:38 am

    ST
    Are Mamea and Hill qualifiers?
Read somewhere their coaches mentioned marginal on the edge or so. Hope they are qualifiers!
What about the QB candidate, any update?

  23. Derek February 1, 2011 9:38 am

No recruits from Kahuku? Unbelievable. With the bad weather in Colorado I hope Parker and Tuumalo enjoy their freezing buns in Boulder. Boise, Laramie, WY, Fort Collins, Colorado Spring, and Reno are not exactly great places as far as weather is concerned during the Nov.-March time frame. I hope we can get Justin Alo. He can redshirt this season and learn the system while Moniz and Austin finish their careers. Then it’s a battle with him, Spain, Graves, Shutter, and Neilson for the starting QB when we head to the Mountain West.
I honestly believe Mack and Rolo have already mapped it out.

  24. Derek February 1, 2011 9:42 am

Just when I posted #23, Stephen made the announcement about Hill and Mamea. It’s like “Who-ah”! I’m pretty stoked about this. To me, Hill is big time. Mamea will solidify the middle in the coming years. Things are looking up!!!!!

  25. Derek February 1, 2011 9:52 am

What! Hill is 6’3″ 215 lbs. Last I checked he was listed at 6’2″ and 210. By the time he gets to camp he might be 6’4″ and 225 lbs. and will be some kind of outside linebacker or even outside pass rusher. Wow! The possibilities. And this guy is a safety at Kahuku so we know he is very athletic. Now, is possible that he will remain at safety? Darryl McBride is a safety and he’s 6’3″ and over 200 lbs. Very, very interesting. The coaches will have to decide where is he best to place him and also where Hill wants to play. But, we know he’s a playmaker.

Look for Beau Yap to have a big, big year. And I predict Justin Vele will be at a minimum a special teams demon just like Semeri Ulufale was in his heyday. All local boys too!!! Wonderful.

  26. A-House February 1, 2011 9:57 am

    Hey, al:

2 down ( Mamea and Hill ) and how many more to go?

Welcome, Ben and Tigi, to the Warrior Ohana!!!! Way to represent!!!

  27. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2011 9:58 am

Yap is going to have a good year.

  28. lava February 1, 2011 9:59 am

    I like good news.

  29. al February 1, 2011 10:06 am

looks we just bust the over/under.

two fine young men from kahuku.
mamea will be a nice find either in the middle or outside backer.
hill will probably compete with van ackeren for aaron brown’s position in the future.

they definitely will contribute right away on special teams.

  30. al February 1, 2011 10:16 am

i think that calen friel will be the sleeper of the class. i think he moves to dtackle.

i think we have a nice bunch coming in. i hoped for more local boys and one or two more would be nice. still available are some linemen.

  31. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 10:19 am

Looks like hawaii also got commits from QB Justin Alo and LB Daniel Acevedo

    Elijah Asante
    @coachelijah Elijah Asante
Congrats Justin Alo & Daniel Acevedo U of Hawaii, Dominic Bierria U of Mexico and Christian Leui-Saole Cal Lutheran University. Carson Colts

  32. al February 1, 2011 10:20 am

    okay, so do we count…
ben dew as a local boy, since he did prep at word of life before his family moving to new zealand?

what about peni faalologo? we often call samoa as the ninth island…can we count him in this group?

technically, calen friel could be consider a part of this class as well.

and australia is an island, too.

  33. al February 1, 2011 10:20 am

    nice find jeezy.

  34. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 10:21 am

Hopefully ST can confirm now. Havent heard of Acevedo.

  35. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 10:22 am

Maybe needed him for a package deal…

  36. Derek February 1, 2011 10:24 am

Al, we can stilll get Santiago, Loewen, and Santos maybe as preferred walk-ons. I’m hoping we can get Alo and maybe get lucky with Bryant. I don’t know how many we have left to offer to this recruiting class. Maybe some guys will have to grayshirt when it’s all said and done. Defensive tackle is a priority for next year, but maybe Tuaau and Fonokalafi can come back from JC and return to the program. And hopefully, we can get Lopati back too just in time for the Mountain West. Maybe even Quines also.

  37. lava February 1, 2011 10:29 am

Parker to Colorado? Hadn’t heard that before. Sorry to report it here, since this is Warrior country.

  38. lava February 1, 2011 10:35 am

Acevedo is listed as an OLB, 6′ and 190lbs. Led the team in tackles and had 5 sacks. Not sure where he projects. He didn’t seem to be much of a factor in pass coverage, at least statistically (no picks, 1 deflection).

  39. MCB February 1, 2011 10:37 am

If you google “darien bryant” and see the latest articles, it seems that everyone thinks he is Hawaii-bound

  40. maui warrior February 1, 2011 10:45 am

if thor salanoa gets his academics in order by summer that would be 4 for local recruits in this class…..

    Daniel Acevedo video

  42. Derek February 1, 2011 10:47 am

al, I don’t have a problem if you want to count them in, however, in my eyes the defintion of a local players to me it means that the player played his high school football in Hawaii. Under that definition, Dew would be local but Faalologo would not. But, let’s not get too techinical. They are all now Hawaii Warriors that’s what counts.

Is Justin Alo the “holy grail” that we seek? Time will tell. He’s listed at 6’2″ 180 lbs so he can still grow a bit. Everybody is different so sometimes growth spurts can be early or can be late. I remember a story about David Robinson. He was recruited at Navy as a 6’6″ freshmen. As you know, he grew to be 7’0″ and he was limited to the kinds to job he had to do in the Navy because he was too tall. So, you never know. If Alo stays at 6’2″ and puts on 25 lbs to 205 that’s good enough. At 6’3″ or 6’4″ and 225 he has NFL size. But, in the end it is all about production, efficiency, and if he’s a winner, the “IT” factor.

  43. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2011 10:49 am

As I understand it, Alo probably will grayshirt, so he won’t be signing with UH tomorrow.

  44. al February 1, 2011 10:50 am

i would imagine that some are being offered greyshirt opportunities.

i think loewen is headed to the mainland.
santiago would a nice pick up. he reminds me of torres. a bit undersized physically but huge in heart and smarts.

parker, tuumalo, and now asiata are headed for colorado.

  45. madeinhawaii February 1, 2011 10:50 am

Check out that kick off return at the end… never saw that before.. all the players come together to form a huge cluster then break out at the same time confusing the coverage.

  46. al February 1, 2011 10:51 am

so what are we going to do from thursday on???

  47. Pomai February 1, 2011 10:59 am

al go to the softball games

  48. madeinhawaii February 1, 2011 10:59 am

    al,

probably start worrying about UH admissions and processing.

  49. maui warrior February 1, 2011 11:03 am

any news on cj santos? braddah is a good athlete also, could try for a different position, but that leg got some mana

    al,

where did loewen get offers from?

  50. Steve February 1, 2011 11:23 am

    Pomai,

How is the Softball Team looking?

  51. A-House February 1, 2011 11:27 am

Anyone notice the predicted temp for Denver – high of 2 degrees and low of -13 degrees.

Denver sits at 5280 feet above sea level, but Boulder is another 3000+ feet HIGHER!!!!

    YIKES, speaking of cold!!!!!!!

  52. Pauoa Boy February 1, 2011 11:30 am

Yessah, had a feeling them Kahuku boys was konna come through babay! Nice to have that pipeline going up North Shore, but we need to solidify our ties with the St. Louis boys too. Oh well I like what I see, hope all our boys who’ve committed stick to their word and sign the paper with the H Warrior logo only! Welcome to Warrior Nation playaz, now let’s do damage this year!

  53. A-House February 1, 2011 11:32 am

    ST: #43

does it mean that it would become “open season” again for Alo? say, he grows another 2″ and puts on 25# by 12/2011 – will coaches put on the big squeeze for his services?

when would he have to sign to become a Warrior?

  54. RedZone February 1, 2011 11:42 am

    Alright.

    Go Red Raiders.

  55. al February 1, 2011 11:48 am

typically only one kicker is kept on scholarship if at all. we currently have redshirt freshmen tyler hadden who was rated the #8th best hs kicker in his senior year.

it is his position to lose. his competition is kaiser hs kyle niiro, who is a pretty big leg himself.

dunnachie, also on scholarship, is a punter. he was practicing kickoffs recently. but, not as a kicker.

what this means is that we could use another kicker on the roster like cj santos. however, we won’t carry two kickers on scholie.

  56. al February 1, 2011 11:49 am

heard loewen was receiving some wac offers and possibly wyoming. unconfirmed however.

  57. al February 1, 2011 11:51 am

i would send tuipulotu, torres, and funaki in to the homes of every kahuku prospect.

although i don’t think that funaki could actually “recruit” in an official capacity.

  59. al February 1, 2011 11:55 am

i suppose we will be recruiting for our assistant coach vacancy soon after the loi’s are firmed up.

i’d like to see a young coach with a passion for recruiting who can effectively work the los angeles-anaheim-san diego counties. an-ex uh’er would be nice with contacts that include nfl teams/scouts.

i know pride. mentioned a couple really great candidates in keith bhonhapa and kim mccloud. but they would come with a nice price tag.

in the future i keep thinking that pisa tinoisamoa would also fit this bill.

  60. Unko Matt February 1, 2011 11:58 am

Hey guys, I was just shifting through some denver bronco blogs and found this: http://www.milehighreport.com/2011/2/1/1959366/2011-denver-broncos-mock-draft-part-six-senior-bowl-edition#storyjump …thought it was pretty exciting to see ppl around the nation takin notice of our warriors. I would love to see Green in a Denver uni. Go Warriors!

  61. MauiBoy February 1, 2011 11:59 am

Loewen has no offers, he was offered to walk-on to UH. Hearing he might get a bite from Weber St. nothing from Wyoming. Santos also invited to walk-on to UH.

  62. RedZone February 1, 2011 12:02 pm

For coach I would go after Jake Cookus from Weber State.

  63. Michigan Warrior February 1, 2011 12:10 pm

Alright, ST! Keep da positive vibes flowing!!!

  64. Shoko February 1, 2011 12:12 pm

Best of luck to John and Brashton.

  65. al February 1, 2011 12:13 pm

mauiboy…thanks. i guess rumors abound. i hope he gets to manoa. i think he’d make for a great offensive tackle in the future.

MW ~ Stay safe up there in Iceland. This winter stom is being called a real Monster! Those streets and hwys might be icy, so best to stay indoors if you are able.

We are going to hit a high of 82 today, up from 77 this morning in Kapolei. Wish we could ‘pipe’ some of this warmth up your way!

  67. Stephen Tsai February 1, 2011 12:47 pm

By the way, UH is not recruiting Daniel Acevedo

  68. Bulla February 1, 2011 12:52 pm

    RedZone,

interesting note about Cookus at Weber State, a young coach with a passion for the game. Another good prospect is Coach Mike Fanoga at Wyoming, time for him to move on. He is a great recruiter in Samoa and West Coast, has attended every GamePlan camp on the North Shore, and his in laws live up in Laie also. He would be a good add, he coached years at NMSU also, and loves coaching local kids.

  69. d1島 February 1, 2011 12:57 pm

  73. Turfwar February 1, 2011 1:18 pm

Great idea on Loewen al. Kid is tall and rapidly gaining weight, has good feet, plays with some attitude and could be a edge guy at 285. Thanks for the info on Acevedo ST. Maybe a walk-on?

  74. Michigan Warrior February 1, 2011 1:18 pm

#66… Kekoa… Hahaha! Mahalo for the well wishes. Wife has to work tomorrow, so hopefully, da kids will not have school so I can drive her. Not looking forward to it.
We’ve had a foot+ in one day. But since we’ve been here, I don’t ever recall getting nearly double that in half the time. We’ll see how things play out.

  79. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 1:29 pm

    Prediction.
Tigi Hills ends up being a 6-3 260 pound DE. Just my opinion.

  80. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 1:29 pm

ST. Kahuku… Who cares about all the ILH boys going to mainland.
Send Vele to Kahuku tomorrow. Represent!

  82. Michigan Warrior February 1, 2011 1:35 pm

Kahuku has been more of a secret this year… as far as recruiting goes… and it seems that most everyone else will be covering Waikiki anyways, as usual.

I agree with Jeezy…have Vele go out to Kahuku and you have all the recruits worth talking about (in terms of football)

  85. Chee Hoo February 1, 2011 1:51 pm

Kahuku is da place to be tomorrow! Besides….Kahuku has the best garlic shrimp! That in itself is worth the drive out to the North Shore! Later with the Saints! Isn’t the song suppose to go like, “Oh when the Saints come marching in”….Now days the Saints go marching out!

  86. Michigan Warrior February 1, 2011 1:55 pm

Well, this is the Warrior Beat, after all!

  87. Derek February 1, 2011 1:57 pm

To Asiata, Parker, and Tuumalo. Freeze, baby, freeze. Ha,Ha,Ha. Good luck. You’ll need it. I think we got the 3 best players in the State. Hill and Mamea was 2 of the main reasons why Kahuku was the #1 team in the state. Justin Vele, in my opinion, is better than V.J. Fehoko. He made more plays and he hits harder. He’s a load. Ask coach Randall Okimoto for his opinion. Vele is the second coming of Falaniko Noga.

Anybody knows who’s the new UH women’s soccer coach? Dana Takahara is having a very tough time this season. The way I see it, there are 3 main problems. One, they don’t have a big player inside, ala Judy Moseley. We need somebody about 6’2″ or 6’3″ with some moves. Two, better shooters. Three, a point guard who can get into the paint easily. Also, too many turnovers. Gotta have much better recruiting or else loser.

Kahuku RB Wily is a very good prospect next year. He’s only a Junior. Work hard in school and get a scholarship.

  88. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 1:59 pm

Being un biased, hard not to put Asiata, Parker, and Kaai in top 5.
I still think we got 3 of the top 10 for sure though.

Marcus Mariota is hands down the best player in the state. His video is unreal.

  89. Aina February 1, 2011 2:05 pm

Mamea and Hill are true Warriors! Good solid group of recruits snagged by Mac and Company. Big, fast, and athletic. Need to beat Colorado badly this upcoming season to stop the flow of local boys.

  90. hawaiiansun February 1, 2011 2:06 pm

if the verbals hold and the recruits qualify academically, I see this class of six (6) HS frosh DBs (4 CBs, 2 S) as the biggest and perhaps the best collection of high school DBs ever assembled in one grab ( CBs–Ijumaa Armstrong 5-10, Promise Amandi 6-0 , Brian Clay 6-1.5, Ellis Henderson 6-0, S–Hill 6-3 and Van Akeren 6-1). Combine with LBs Jared Leaf, Brenden Daley, Ben Mamea and Justin Vele and this is one of the best back-seven recruits assembled at Manoa in one class. Congrads to MAC, Coach Aranda & staff.

    Go Warriors! Bleed Green!

  99. hawaiiansun February 1, 2011 2:39 pm

#92, you may be correct….one thing for sure if Coach Aranda has his way–the aforementioned athletes I mentioned above will be given shots on D. Receivers are naturals at DB and ditto for RBs playing LB (Jared Leaf) and QBs playing safety (Graves). Look, if an athlete is an obvious bigtime assest at receiver, like Greg Salas was out of high school, there will be little intra-coach tugging. MAC, unlike JJ is D oriented and may tilt to the D.
There are quality DL on our team who would make strong OL candidates. We need more athletic offensive linemen. TEs make great conversions to either side of the trenches bc of their athletic skills.

Best case scenario, recruits should be flexible and fit where they have the best shot at the NFL level. That’s where keen-minded coaches are good salesmen and make the inspiring pitch for transition.

  100. Helekoa February 1, 2011 2:56 pm

Good News for warrior fans, Ben an Tigi committed the accept a scholarship from UH.

I would agree with 702WarriorFan. Are they both accademicly qualified? or is it just news to hype up warrior fans? according to source strait from the roots of Laie. Ben did not qualify, an Tigi was borderline. I could be wrong, I hope, if not! Then they will be taking the same rout Tevita Woodard took. Except Tevita was determine to earn his credits early by taking summer school in JC and qualify for D1. That leaves him with Three years of eligibility to play football at the D1 level. It would definitely be nice to have Ben an Tigi Qualified to play. They both would be an immediate impact on the team. This would up the number to three recruits from the island of Oahu, instead of just one, Justin Vele.

Another question is why now? Why the day before signing day? That’s a question I wouldnt know until it’s all said an done with.

Derek, I would agree with you on Justin Vele playing speacial teams, but I don’t. He too would be an immediate impact on defense for the warriors, just the same as Ben an Tigi. These guys where tearing it up on the field last year in high school. All First Team All State selections. I can only wish these boys luck an hope that they all come through with academics. These are boys where born to defend the aina! Good decision on staying home boys! Warrior Up!

  101. hawaiiansun February 1, 2011 2:59 pm

#97, there were many over the years, to be sure….Tom Tuinei (UCLA) and Amani Purcell (Penn St) stand out as well as that Punahou kid who started at safety for the warriors and transfered from Boston College….speaking about Punahou, Arnold Morgado transfered from MSU and played for Larry Price in the 70’s. UH has always welcomed back its athletes, but lately, PAC coaches (Jeff Tedford) have leaned on Hawai’i players yearning to re-matriculate to UH and have imposed harsh transfer rules to prevent their return.

  102. d1島 February 1, 2011 3:08 pm

    Derek,

Aufoga Wily was listed as a Soph. on the roster this past season.

Also Nike/SPARQ Combine results list him as c/o 2013.

    http://rise.espn.go.com/football/articles/2011/01/29-hawaii-combine-results.aspx?pursuit=Football

But if this goes to court, don’t quote me okay? 😯 😉 😆

  104. hawaiiansun February 1, 2011 3:14 pm

The last recruiting class at UH to score only one local athlete, I believe was Vaughn Meatoga’s class.
Naturally there were more local ballers that verbed to UH in that class but did not AQ.
The All-State LB from Waianae stands out. They were top recruits and verbed soley bc no other team wanted to offer bc of the adendant academic risks….hope that isnt the same scenario in this year’s class given NCAA rules that preclude overbooking. The price to pay is steep in comparison to the short-term pub.

  117. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 4:55 pm

ST said UH is waiting on 2 more mainland offers.
One a DE and one a transfer.
My educated guess is Tyler Gray and Mike Edwards

  118. Pride. February 1, 2011 5:01 pm

Is that the Mike Edwards that was dismissed by Lane Kiffin at Tennessee, or is it a different Mike Edwards.

  119. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 5:02 pm

    whoops DE.. Maybe Darien Bryant

  121. Pride. February 1, 2011 5:04 pm

  122. Pride. February 1, 2011 5:06 pm

I wasn’t listening to well. I thought Tsai said a a big time defensive guy and a defensive end. Would love to have Mike Edwards though, if we’re in play for him.

  123. Pride. February 1, 2011 5:09 pm

Can’t believe the type of wide receivers that we have in the program now. No better advertisement for Hawaii football than watching Bess with the Miami Dolphins. Salas with the right team could be on that level in a few years.

  124. jeezy33 February 1, 2011 5:12 pm

He said big time transfer and DE. So Darient Bryant makes sense and Mike Edwards transferring from Coffeyville jc

  131. Derek February 1, 2011 6:27 pm

If we get Darien Bryant it will be a great recruiting class. We got speed, lots of height, weight to grow and get stronger, and lots of potential. Big cornerbacks can become safeties, safeties can be outside linebackers, linebackers can be rush ends, and DEs can end up into defensive tackles. More speed. Looks like the group has a lot of athletic ability.

Darien Bryant, meet your fellow Warrior Darius Bright. Announcers will have a field day. Tongue twister. Both 6’4″ or 6’5″, both over 215 lbs, both run about 4.5. I wonder what their jersey numbers will be?

A lot of the speed merchants can play either offense or defense. Some even played quarterback. One of them can step up to be our kick retuner, maybe Ellis Henderson or Trevor Davis. Sampson also in the running to return kicks.

  132. HawaiiMongoose February 1, 2011 6:32 pm

Soooo… what happened to the holy grail?

  133. A-House February 1, 2011 6:37 pm

If the players know the “harsh” transfer rules, why choose to go to a PAC12 school knowing that if want to return, there will be hell to pay – not from UH or its fans, but the school they originally commited too!! I wonder if coaches tell local recruits this fact?

Hope the PAC 12 transfer rule applies to ALL players; odda wise it’s out right discrimination!!

Guess that they could transfer to a JC and then to UH after 2 years away. Unfortunately, they will be 2 years behind others who chose to stay rather than ready to “start” as a RS sophmore.

  134. Derek February 1, 2011 6:38 pm

Let’s start thinking about Sept. 3 when we play the Colorado Ta Tonka!!!!! Revenge for last year’s loss at Boulder when we had them 10-0 at the half. I hope the Ta Tonkas wilt in the Hawaii humidity. If we gave USC a tough time at home last year, I have to believe we can beat the Ta Tonkas at home. Trojans have more talent than the Ta Tonkas.

Let’s make Asiata, Parker, and Tuumalo sorry they picked the Ta Tonkas.

  135. A-House February 1, 2011 6:44 pm

birdie! little birdie! where art thou? al needs your help in “spreading the news” to us hungrily waiting fans of Warrior football.

did ST say when we will find out about the 2 “big time” defensive players?

Lane Kiffen! da one who skipped out of Tennessee ahead of the lynch mob and now at USC?

I thought the player was an OL guy.

  136. A-House February 1, 2011 6:49 pm

    Derek:

#134 – and a great big DITTO on that!

what was to be a big time win translated into the Warriors just plain winded from the start at the high altitude of Boulder – we were there with so many other hopeful UH fans only to leave the stadium deflated!

#106, ur correct about Meatoga’s class, ie Miah, et al….but those guys were grayshirts, sorry I was being a bit too technical.
BTW, Tafiti Uso was a Stanford transfer.
You bring out lots of local transfers athletes though. Im more focused on the BCS transfers, however, since they were blue chippers in high school and the focus of local attention. Still, it’s always good to welcome back any local transfer–they are a huge group, your stats bear witness to this fact and you never know–Umu made an outstanding contribution this past season and signifies the best that were under the radar and blossomed into starters for the warriors. Another transfer I think highly of is Jordan Monico. He is a legit fbs contributor with skills. According to my calculations, Jordan has two more years to play two.

Good evening Tsaiko Nation, got superbowl t shirts from Darrin Washington Inc. whose nephew Rodney Washington played for the bows from 1992-93. Spoke to Darrin about you good folks of Tsaiko Nation and he wants to donate ONE of his nice looking shirts to you.

Shirts are in black, white or grey and have front and back silk screened with packers and steelers logo. Super bowl shirts have the lombardi trophy and many other designs reprensenting Pittsburgh and Green Bay.

All I need to know from the majority who are interested is what size and color shirt in which you folks prefer ?

Will check the blog on those who are interested as you won’t go wrong with the shirt as it is FREE and Darrin Washington Inc. really appreciate Hawaii as he has fond memories coming over to the Islands and watching his nephew play.

Your kokua is GREATLY appreciated !

You win some, you lose some. Mike Edwards is a huge pickup.

4* out of high school. 21st rated cornerback out of high school in 2009. That’s bigtime. We don’t usually get those. Great job by the coaches.

  181. Pride. February 1, 2011 10:50 pm

    #179 – HOT?

  182. al February 1, 2011 10:50 pm

ahouse…as promised you got your new tonight.

  183. Curt February 1, 2011 10:53 pm

    Abunai,

You’re right about Darien Bryant. He da man. We’ll find out soon. C’mon Darien. We look forward to seeing you blazin’ the field at Aloha Stadium. That goes for the DE too. Be a part of a great defense and a great team.

  184. al February 1, 2011 10:55 pm

de/te…still get chance. last one our list. no one else on our list. it’s a good list we got. lots of speed.

mike edwards in the mold of mouton. three years sound great.

  185. Abunai February 1, 2011 11:00 pm

Al come on man get your pull on. bring them home man… LOL

  186. Pride. February 1, 2011 11:00 pm

    Defensive Tackles:

    Vaugn Meatoga – Sr.
    Kaniela Tuipulotu – Sr.
    Zach Masch – Sr.
    David Hafoka – Sr.
    Haku Correa – Jr.
    Geordon Hanohano – Jr.
    Ho’oikaika Cavaco-Amoy – Jr.
    Siasau Matagiese – So.
    Moses Samia – Fr.
    Calen Friel – Fr.

Hmmmmmmm. Seven in the upper half and three in the lower half of the board. Coaches must have something up their sleeve. They must know about capable walk-ons, or are expecting J.C. transfers coming in next year. We would probably need three transfers from next year’s recruiting class. Two for the junior class in the 2012 season and one for the sophmore class of that year.

  187. al February 1, 2011 11:07 pm

abunai…no decision by the last great recruit of this year.

today’s announcements took the class to another level in my opinion.

  188. Bryson February 1, 2011 11:09 pm

WOW!!!This class is looking awesome in terms of speed and talent…We are starting too build that foundation for success…Each year that has passed under Mack the recruiting has improved…We may not keep the very best talent home but we do a great job of scouring the mainland for kids who do wanna be here…Just one more commit i’m hoping for and that’ll be the icing on the cake!!!…Go Get’um Mack n Co.

  189. Curt February 1, 2011 11:09 pm

    al,

Is Darien Bryant the DE/TE? I was thinking he was projected as a WR.

  190. al February 1, 2011 11:10 pm

supposedly he will awaken tomw with his decision and sign the letter. tough call for any young man. he’d be the last recruit for the year says the lil birdie.

oh, well, unless the holy grail walks in the door with a signed document, that of course would be the only exception.

  191. al February 1, 2011 11:11 pm

..and come thursday no rest for the weary…recruiting for 2012 should get in to high gear.

  192. pcwarrior February 1, 2011 11:12 pm

al, after tomorrow…. you got to tell me who the holy grail is, please!

  193. pcwarrior February 1, 2011 11:13 pm

8 more hours for the boys in Kahuku to sign their letters

  194. al February 1, 2011 11:15 pm

curt…now that you brought his name up, i think he would make for a great de. looks like he could grow to 265 no problem.

  195. al February 1, 2011 11:17 pm

pride. maybe some of our commits from year’w pat return next year. there’s several that went away via the jc route whoe would look very good in a warrior black n green.

  196. Bryson February 1, 2011 11:17 pm

Yes Al Who Is The Holy Grail? Inquiring Minds Want To Know….

  197. al February 1, 2011 11:18 pm

…and mahalo to jeezy for all his hard work. must have spent more hours searching for info than he did sleeping.

  198. al February 1, 2011 11:19 pm

okay we’ll discuss the holy grail….after tomorrow. er, that would be thursday then.

  199. al February 1, 2011 11:20 pm

that holy grail will be very important in 2012. we should have another great team then.

  200. pcwarrior February 1, 2011 11:23 pm

    200 gnite all

  201. Curt February 1, 2011 11:28 pm

    pcwarrior,

al has not revealed who the holy grail is. In mode of the great de-coder, A-House, I will analyze the situation, read into al’s subliminal messages, and make my guess. I am presuming the holy grail is someone like Colt Brennan, a quarterback. Note above that al said “unless the holy grail walks in the door.” That tells me he’s a local recruit. Therefore, I take it that the holy grail is Iolani QB, Marcus Mariota, currently an Oregon commit.

  202. tommui February 1, 2011 11:36 pm

SLUGGER re: Faust – the devil you say?!!!

You are suppose to jump up and yell “howzit Tom” – what’s give with the birdie?

  203. pcwarrior February 1, 2011 11:39 pm

Curt, I’ll just sleep on it and maybe the letter will be on Coach Mac’s desk. I’ll have the old tape recorder playing in my sleep…. Marcus you’re a WARRIOR, Marcus you’re a WARRIOR, MARCUS YOU’RE A WARRIOR…. BTW MARCUS went to St. Louis.

  204. Curt February 1, 2011 11:49 pm

    pcwarrior,

Oops. My bad. You’re right; he’s from St Louis. Whatever the case, we hope he changes his mind and becomes a Warrior.

  205. homey ℞ February 1, 2011 11:54 pm

Looking good on the recruiting front.

  206. RedZone February 1, 2011 11:57 pm

  207. Bighilofan2 February 2, 2011 12:06 am

  208. Slugger February 2, 2011 12:11 am

    tommui,

I couldn’t rush the seniors in front of me to get out of the row to say HI! I thought about yelling over to you, but I’d get stink eye from the people between me & you. I coulda filled you in a little about the recruits I saw last week.

    Pride.,

#179 ~ Yup, HOT debils. Akina’s production was very cool. Les Loo was in the chorus; he plays ‘ukulele & sings with Dean.

  209. turfwar February 2, 2011 12:15 am

I don’t know how the coaches get any sleep the night before LOI signing day. Heck we can’t sleep. I’m guessing al’s been up for at least a week. Thanks for staying on it for the rest of us fans al.

  210. al February 2, 2011 12:15 am

marcus is not the holy grail…he’s a duck.

  211. Bighilofan2 February 2, 2011 12:21 am

    ok al.

who in yo mind is da holy grail?

all I know is, if the guys who say they coming stay come,

den i say Coach really put his foot down, dat da coaches put dare feet down

dat all is well in Kahuku, that Kahuku got its priorities right.

Good for Kahuku. Great for us!

Thank you Ben, Tigi. thank you from the bottom of my heart!

  212. Bighilofan2 February 2, 2011 12:25 am

i’m thinking mike edwards is da holy grail.

welcome to Warrior Nation, Mike Edwards.

  213. Pride. February 2, 2011 12:26 am

You can have your holy grail. Al. I’d rather have Justin Alo. Hopefully he can take care of business between now and graduation. Summer school too if he needs to.

  214. Pride. February 2, 2011 12:28 am

By the way, hoping that the athletic department pushes Tuipulotu for post-season honors.

  215. al February 2, 2011 12:30 am

    analyze this…

today’s recruits may have been the three most significant trio announced thus far.

first, ben mamea and tigi hill are as important as when in the eleventh hour paipai falemalu and alema tachibana committed to the university of hawaii a couple of years ago. the kahuku duo this time helped save the hawaii 2011 recruit class from disaster. (it also broke my over/under).

second, miike edwards’ verbal agreement shows that we are on the verge of becoming a who’s who in college football. to sign such a talent as he indicates that the kids out there know who hawaii is on the football map. granted we are light years away from alabama, usc, notre dame, and the like, but, we are enough at this time to be even considered and today accepted.

    .

  216. Pomai February 2, 2011 12:30 am

al forgot to mention the holy grail turned out to be a women,,,,,,,,,,,,

  217. al February 2, 2011 12:34 am

justin alo will be counted for 2012 when he comes in january as greyshirt scholarship guy. it is good that he can catch up on things that need his attention. hit the weight room and then enter the fall of 2012 at 6’2″ 220lbs.

i, too,k think that he is a good one.

  218. al February 2, 2011 12:35 am

yah, i thought tuipulotu was last year’s mvp on defense.

  219. al February 2, 2011 12:36 am

pomai…sorry but the holy grail will be a man.
    …it is written.

  220. Steve February 2, 2011 12:40 am

    Holy Grail = JJ

  221. papajoe2 February 2, 2011 12:40 am

    Is it today yet?

  222. Slugger February 2, 2011 12:50 am

    Night y’all!

  223. turfwar February 2, 2011 12:59 am

I’m with you Pride on Justin. It’s possible he could turn out to be the gem of this class. Saw this kid at the men’s volleyball game and he just looks like an athlete. Built and carries himself like a young Blaine Gaison just a little thinner and taller. Was around the program during the Tomey years and got to see Blaine develop thru hard work. I hope this kid has the same dreams and work ethic.

  224. Kekoa February 2, 2011 1:00 am

    Note to Michigan Warrior:

Our top knotch weather prognosticator, Guy Hagi, sez you folks will experience a 3 day white-out. Apparently nobody told him that it’s Black history month.Hehehe…

  225. al February 2, 2011 1:05 am

turfwar…alo will be a greyshirt guy. per tsai he won’t count on this recruit class.

  226. Bighilofan2 February 2, 2011 1:18 am

i feel dat da Tulsa concussion has had good afta effects.

i’m tinkin dat makin @$$ wen cause a renewed focus by da coaches fo neva put demselves in da make A position. actually, Mr. Cabral stay helping us out. cannot wait for Sept 3, Halawa. gonna see if da lesson was well learned. i’m hoping! fo sure!

  233. HawaiiMongoose February 2, 2011 2:36 am

#189, Curt, reportedly Bryant wants to major in marine biology, and is trying to choose between UH, Vanderbuilt and North Carolina.

According to this list, Vandy doesn’t even offer a program in marine biology:

    http://marinebio.org/marinebio/careers/us-schools.asp

Also the UNC program is oriented toward graduate students, not undergrads.

If Darien wants to get in the ocean and really experience marine science as an undergraduate, UH Manoa is the place to be.

  234. HawaiiMongoose February 2, 2011 2:38 am

    Oops, that’s Vanderbilt, not Vanderbuilt.

    #223 – You’re right turfwar. Film doesn’t lie. He’s accurate on film.

  241. Pride. February 2, 2011 4:01 am

We picked up two defensive ends over 250 pounds and a linebacker over 250. I wonder if we redshirt any of them and allow them to get up to 275 or 280 to play inside. They’ll be quicker than your normal defensive tackle.

  242. Lava February 2, 2011 4:06 am

LOI day. Let’s make it a good one.

  243. Pride. February 2, 2011 4:07 am

Notice that we have been bringing in longer offensive linemen over the last two classes. Obviously coach Shaw still favors his Big 10 type linemen. Hopefully we can keep those O-linemen lean. It’s much easier to move your feet and pass block when you’re “lean” rather than “big”.

  244. wafan February 2, 2011 4:10 am

Looks like an early Spring is forecast.

I bet the folks in the “mid”west and along the other coast are wondering about the arrival.

Blake Griffin is hands-down the best power-forward in the NBA. A redhead in the NBA. One is almost inclined to feel bad. (See: Brian Scalabrine) However, Griffin attacks the rim with such ferocity and reckless abandon that he has become recognized as a bully on the court. His highlights are so jaw dropping that opposing arenas are left with two options in his wake: deafening silence or raucous praise.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
