College coaches often like to say how, unlike their NFL counterparts, they are not able to just sign free agents to replenish rosters.

Not quite so, at least for one day.

Yesterday, the Warriors conducted tryouts for walk-on candidates already in enrolled at UH-Manoa. About 50 took part in the 40-yard sprints, 225-pound bench reps, and orientation session.

The player who drew the most attention was Kana Silva, younger brother of former UH safety Mana Silva.

kana

Kana Silva was hand-timed running the 40 in 4.42 seconds and 4.44 seconds.

He said he has been enrolled at UH since August. He was a wide receiver/defensive back at Kamehameha-Hawaii.

Also drawing attention was Josh Gist, a quarterback from South Carolina. He attended a junior college in 2009, but now is enrolled at UH.

josh

Gist’s best 40-time yesterday was 4.5 seconds.

Well, how would you rate this year’s recruiting class? I saw there was a “Hawaii top 10,” but I’m not sure how that list was constructed. It’s like an arranged marriage: “This is who we think you should recruit.” Maybe it was Colorado’s top 10.

A team doesn’t craft lists by geography. It goes by projected need — where will it need help in two or three years — then it rates prospects, by position, based on ability and availability (academics, prospect’s interest in the school). So a team like Fresno, for instance, is not going to have a slotback on its list.

Now Saint Louis’ Juda Parker was on a lot of lists because he’s at position that every needs — rush end. He can be defensive end in a 4-3 and an outside linebacker in a 3-4.

So, do you like the Warriors’ recruiting class? Who are your favorite pickups?

Not sure why, but I’ve got a mental block when it comes to volleyball player Michael Taxter’s last name. I’ve spelled it three different ways this season. Sign of old age when you start getting names wrong.

Much apologies.

Deepest sympathy to the family of Sumiko Kikiloi. She was a long-time UH football fan who traveled to many road games. When you make the trek to Laramie, that’s dedication.

Safe travels to Stretch, who, unlike my J-E-T-S, is headed to the Super Bowl. We’re not envious of him at all, right. Right?!?

  10. papajoe2 February 3, 2011 8:16 am

Kana, Mana, and sister, Kahea are all superior athletes. Kahea played volleyball for UH and UH Hilo. Also was a track star in high school.

See you all at the game tonight. 😀

My last posting on yesterday’s site:

AL’s 6’5″ nephew – I think his name is Parsifal.

POMAI’s comment I would agree with. Wherever the recruit is from (whether from here or somewhere else) we want WINNERS!

It would be great if we can keep our home-grown products but we want guys who want to actually Play for Hawaii.

  16. jojo ® February 3, 2011 8:39 am

    And how is DPK today?

Yes, ST, we have your back!

  18. gigi-hawaii February 3, 2011 8:40 am

I actually wore red yesterday, though I am not Chinese!

  19. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2011 8:45 am

Saw a bunch of the grayshirts at yesterdays’ workouts.
Calen Friel is a big guy.
    Samson Anguy is very fast.
OK, that’s my basic assessment. I think I would suck as a scout.

  20. Souljah February 3, 2011 9:06 am

Why does UH’s website not have the press conference?

  21. lava February 3, 2011 9:08 am

    I like Darius II.

    I also like Vele.

I am also very high on the grayshirts.

    Very good class overall.

    Kung Hee Fat Choy!

Good Luck to the walk-ons…a proud Warrior Tradition!

  24. Bowwar February 3, 2011 9:13 am

DB II looks like a future Warrior! Good to see Kana Silva trying out…Speed kills, so I’m sure we can find someplace on a the roster for him.

Whatever happened to the “military guy” that wowed the coaches in the last walk-on tryouts? I think he was a wide-out or slot…I thought he was going to play for the Warriors once he finished his military obligation…

  25. NYUH February 3, 2011 9:15 am

    Darius, make your baby proud!

    Looks like a good group

  26. al February 3, 2011 9:17 am

  27. tommui February 3, 2011 9:21 am

And a Happy Chinese New Year to all!

  28. al February 3, 2011 9:22 am

overall it is a great class save for the lack of local boys. the latter of which can be rectified next year. in all due respect it was a lean year for local studs, but, we need to go get em.

that being said…i like the speed. i like the size. if they all stick then this should be mack’s best class yet.

the last minute save by the kahuku 2, edwards, and our new samoan linebacker was huge.

i’d rate this a 7.5 to 8.5. which is rather high in my book.

  29. al February 3, 2011 9:23 am

the three new greyshirts will make an impact in the year’s to come.

  30. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 9:23 am

    Morning all!

  31. al February 3, 2011 9:26 am

next year we definetly need to find the holy grail if he is not in camp now or next year.
every year we need to keep the quest for the holy grail.

    every year we need;
    4 olineman
    4 dlineman
    4 db’s
    4 wr/sb’s
    4 lb’s
    1 rb
    3 athletes
    1 holy grail candidate

  32. al February 3, 2011 9:26 am

  33. Bulla February 3, 2011 9:29 am

    good morning Tsaikos,

dpk, easy bro, one day at a time, and go easy on the intake, only healthy stuff 🙂

LOI is over, now time for POI….haha, the Poi is doing good, about 6’1 and pretty strong… haha

  34. al February 3, 2011 9:31 am

tommui…he is not parsifal, can’t carry a tune at all.

    6’5″?
thought he was taller and he can toss the ball the length of the field.

  35. LK February 3, 2011 9:31 am

    “. . . Who are your favorite pickups? ”

Vele’s a Gov, so I’ll go with him.
There have a been a lot of former Governors who have done UH proud, that’s the extent of my scouting ability.

  36. Markazulu February 3, 2011 9:35 am

Remember Guys Hawaii is known for having 1 of if not thee best Walk on Group in history! All the Walk ons from before I’m sure we’ll have more Diamonds in the rough!
I hope to see our D play consistently like how we did at the beginning of the Hawaii Bowl for a whole season an for a whole GAME! An not get flattened over like the 2nd half meltdown. I’m proud of our boys though an am looking forward to Seasons to come. We should be stacked at Receivers! An our Running Backs are looking great an ever since Mac became our “COACH” I’ve always wanted to see our D step up This year they did for the most part step up I hope NEXT season instead a step we see leaps of improvement from every one the Players only can do so much. I wanna see improvement on Coaches, University, an most of all the FANS! To build success we need to start from the bottom an work our way to the top!

Go Warriors! An Welcome to the Warrior Ohana once a Warrior always a warrior!

  37. BG February 3, 2011 9:36 am

DPK, if you get to read this…we’re all wanting you well again! Or, at the very least, have them install a dvd player in your room (you’re special) so you can get pumped up with the inspirational Warrior games. We’re rooting for you.

Healing thoughts for Kekoa, Queen D, and the little Princess as they battle their own health issues this past week.

A lot of the old-timers too! Lovin’ it!

  45. Derek February 3, 2011 9:49 am

Al, I agree with you. When all said and done I think this is Mack’s best recruiting class so far. We can get better. This class is athletic, fast, has height, leverage, and potential to grow if they work hard in the weight room and learn their techniques. When it comes down to it, we want guys to be playmakers. No sense to be fast but can’t make plays. With this incoming group I think we some who can make an immediate impact. I like Henderson, Davis, Edwards, Amadi, Van Ackeren, and Vele. Tigi Hill is big time and I hope he will take care of his schooling. Besides our look for the Holy Grail, be can also use the next Messiah.

I saw a game in person 2 years ago between Mililani and Campbell at Mililani. On one play, I saw a Campbell runner rocket thru the line of scrimmage and was gone in an instant. Touchdown. Over 60 yards. It was like a lightning bolt, untouched, and nobody even close to him. I said to myself, this guy has the fastest 10-20 yard burst I have ever seen. He wasn’t big, only about 5’7″ or 5’8″ and not more than 155 lbs. I wondered who was this guy. It was Samson Anguay. I guess UH coaches knew where to find some talent. I thought Samson could be special if he worked hard. Kinda small, but we all know Chad Owens was kinda small too and look how he turned out. Dynamite comes in small packages. How Samson has a great career at UH.

  46. tommui February 3, 2011 9:50 am

AL #34 – he’s not the Holy Grail?
    Sorry!

  47. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 9:52 am

    al,

dpk might be coming out today.

Sounds like something Oprah might say…

    Get well DPK… Laureen… Dr. Whang… !

  48. migloto February 3, 2011 9:52 am

Josh Gist must be fast, he’s even blurry in that picture!!

  49. Markazulu February 3, 2011 9:54 am

“Most of these guys can flat fly and that’s what we’re after — speed,” -Greg Mcmackin-

This is what I like as long as they can maintain that speed they can get stronger an bigger at UH during the offseason espically since they have such a good Strength and Conditioning coach!

  50. maukaman808 February 3, 2011 9:57 am

I like the o-line guys. Hoping for a d-tackle or two but its good to get some d-ends.

  51. Bulla February 3, 2011 10:05 am

we need D ends, we need them badly… i thought some JC guys would help our contain/pursuit off the edge….got some young guys coming up who’ll do fine, but you always want that something something………auryte

DPK, take it easy, take it slow, got more time than money you know……………

  52. jm2375 February 3, 2011 10:12 am

ST – I see you finally corrected your typos in the online story. Pay me a small stipend (fb season tixs perhaps) and I’ll proofread your mvb stories. 😀

  53. SteveM February 3, 2011 10:19 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Kung Hee Fat Choy!

I like the entire recruit class.
I like all the players that put on the Warrior uniform.

  54. A-House February 3, 2011 10:25 am

    ST:

I am far from being any kind of an expert/rater, but I would say UH scored at least a B+ or A- cause they filled their needs. Their selection appears to be more based on what the player can bring to UH rather than ### of ***** next to their name.

We all know what UH and its fans can offer to incoming athletes.

Will the “last” scholarship that Coach Mack is holding will be for al’s “holy grail”? We shall see.

  55. BG February 3, 2011 10:27 am

This is football related altho’ I start off on a tangent. While having a grammar check done on my last paper, I got this comment regarding my use of the phrase “food for thought”; it said, “overused and trite”. So I decided to replace it with “thoughtful tidbits”.

Before I go to work on my next paper, I leave this thoughtful tidbit. For many students, male and female, the frosh year has many adjustments. Some students adjust better than others. Nothing new here. For athletes, it can be even more difficult because they usually can’t be the stars they were in hs and they are ego adjustments. Worse still, if they have to redshirt and can’t get on the field at all. Very difficult to feel a part of the team. I’d like to see a special effort made to really make the Hawaii experience positively memorable.

Give members of ALL the teams opportunities to learn about the different cultural values. What the traditional Samoan tat’s mean. What’s the hula all about. Why we do the haka. The proud history of the football walk-on program (imagine if Chad, Pisa, or Colt came to talk). The unbelievably awesome volleyball histories. Who are the people in the Circle of Honor? Perhaps some of the mainland or international students can talk about their home life. Take field trips to the PCC and Hanauma Bay or hike Diamond Head. Sprinkle these opportunities throughout the year and make it a special time for the student-athletes to bond with Hawaii. Maybe it’ll help someone struggling with homesickness.

    Just another Tsaikotic idea…

  56. rage777 February 3, 2011 10:30 am

If there is going to be any year that UH wins a football conference title outright, this year is it. I was looking at the key returning players and key player losses of each WAC team, and only Hawaii and New Mexico State has their QB returning. It’s time for Coach Mack to let the dogs loose and blitz the young quarterbacks this year.

  57. A-House February 3, 2011 10:37 am

To all the Tsaikos near and far, to you and your families may I say Kung Hee Fat Choy from the A-House family.

May 2011 be filled with good health and much happiness!!

    I’ll take another BCS game!!!!!

  58. Bowwar February 3, 2011 10:38 am

#31 – Al, The holy grail may exist on the team already…It just needs to be nurtured to fruition. As for a future HG, MAC has a one (?) scholarship for someone who falls through the cracks…Stay tuned, I think there will be one or two surprises as schools scramble and some borderline kids “qualify” for college.

  59. greenthumb February 3, 2011 11:00 am

#55 — BG, what a great idea! All about bonds. And a lot of it would not cost a penny. To tie it back further to sports — there has been talk here about reaching out to letterwinners. Your idea sounds like a way to say a belated thanks and you mean a lot to us to our athletes of past years and decades. As in, come back to visit and renew your ties with the UH family — your emotional support and connections will make our program stronger.

  66. jeezy33 February 3, 2011 11:29 am

    whoops… only 1 got.

  67. Derek February 3, 2011 11:33 am

    Recruiting team rankings:
Vanderbilt is at the bottom in the SEC – condolences to Darien Bryant!!!
Colorado is at the bottom in the Pac 12 – condolences to Parker, Asiata, and Tuumalo!!!!
Hawaii is #2 in the WAC, behind Louisiana Tech. Nevada is close to the bottom.
SMU is #1 in the Conf. USA. JJ, Klemm, and his group has done a very nice job. Look for SMU to see how they do in the next couple of
    years.
Washington St. is in the bottam half of the Pac 12 – condolences to Chester Sua!!!!

I hope Mack hires a special teams coach who is innovative and is a risk taker. I would say that we have been very conservative in our returns, especially punt returns. I’d like to see more agressiveness in trying to block kicks. We have one of the best in John Hardy-Tuliau in blocking kicks. Let’s use his amazing gift to make big plays for us. I know John would love it.

  68. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2011 11:40 am

    Jeezy:
Abe Elimimian and Doe Henderson, both former UH defensive backs, have been helping Crenshaw. I thin Elimimian is on staff. NOt sure what Doe’s role is, although he’s in L.A. often because he’s managing his cousin’s musical/acting career.
Alexis is a grayshirt. They actually didn’t have to announce the signings of Alexis, Gray or Alo. Those three signed scholarship agreements, which are binding only on UH’s side.
Alexis is a little bit light for a DT now, but he’ll fill out, no doubt. He has the frame. Nice future pickup since Vaughn Meatoga, Kaniela Tuipulotu and Zach Masch will be entering their senior seasons.

  69. PowderPuff February 3, 2011 11:44 am

Kung Hee Fat Choy, everyone!!! Manoa Mist, yes…I had Ms.Evinger. I was recently at the Hawaii State Library and found her byline on some Advertiser articles from 1961…holy smokes!!!

James – lots of prayers to your mom…thinking of you all.

And wow ST…I just saw a blog ranking of the top 75 Hawaii blogs and the WB is #7…congratulations, ST!!!!

  70. jeezy33 February 3, 2011 11:48 am

Yeah. I watched his AMP Nike Camp video in LA. one on one drills. He went up against Torian White and Tyler Johnstone. White going to UCLA, Johnstone going to Oregon. Alexis pretty much got dominated quite easily compared to other D linemen. Needs to gain weight, get stronger, and player more physical. But I can see the nice frame and athletic ability to be good once he does get into our strength program.
Greg Townsend and Todd Barr were the most impressive D linemen. Absolute beasts.

  71. Jump Higher February 3, 2011 11:55 am

    This is Useful. Thanks.

  73. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 12:02 pm

  74. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 12:04 pm

and um… shave ice in Waianae.. swimming with moray eels… water snakes in Pokai Bay.. discovering my first black widow spiders off Pokai Bay.. showing the teachers who said they didn’t exist on the islands… riding horseback to school each morning… mangos rolling down the picking pole and into my face… all da good stuff!

  75. Ronnie February 3, 2011 12:20 pm

I didn’t know we have black widow spiders!

  76. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2011 12:20 pm

Congrats also to the WBB on their win last night!

Any word on the coaches contract or the unveiling of the WAC championship rings?

    Good afternoon to all!

  77. PowderPuff February 3, 2011 12:22 pm

duffer…haha! re #72 – yes, I was at the library one afternoon doing research on my place of employment. How’s that one?!?! HAHA! 🙂 Hey, see you next weekend…Coach Wade talked about Cal Baptist on Call the Coach this week.

  78. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 12:26 pm

    Ronnie….

I still see black widow spiders from time to time. If they were acknowledged in Waianae back in 1961 they probably wouldn’t have become as widespread as they are now. We also have the brown widow spider which may be even more prevalent and equally toxic.

I don’t know if we’ve had any major instances with these spiders though. For the most part those shiny wasp like insects keep them in check …

  79. d1島 February 3, 2011 12:39 pm

  83. Kiamuki Kid February 3, 2011 12:53 pm

    Ronnie,

We have caught Black Widow Spiders underneath houses in Liliha. The lower body was about the size between a nickel and a quarter with a beautiful red hour glass shape mark. This was about 20-25 years ago

  84. al February 3, 2011 12:57 pm

wasn’t junior here two or three weeks ago. wasn’t he hosted by tank?

  85. al February 3, 2011 12:58 pm

kiamuki kid…those are false black widow spiders. they are merely garden spiders. some local folk did refer to them as black widows for a lack knowing.

  86. Slugger February 3, 2011 1:13 pm

    al,

I met Amadi with Tank after the Stanford MVB game. Met Junior on Saturday after the MBB game with Desmond Dean.

Congratulations to coach Mac and the assistent coaches for all the solid recruits that UH football recieved…this will be an exciting season. I hope we have more Paredes and Tuilau’s on the defense also a few more Salas and Pilares’s on the offense…offset by a terrific runningback like A.Green…mahalo coaches!!! great job!!! PS. lets beat Colorado here!

  91. d1島 February 3, 2011 2:28 pm

Safe travels Stretch…hope the road between Houston and Big D is kind to you.

  93. maui warrior February 3, 2011 2:29 pm

great job mac and co., hopefully all can have a chance to qualify and produce on the field in the years to come….

  94. d1島 February 3, 2011 2:33 pm

…pack gloves. Often found cursing myself for forgetting them when I get to the PNW.

  95. RedZone February 3, 2011 2:49 pm

    Is DII related to D1?

    Did ST make a joke?

We got dlinemen and we got my Governor linebacker. I am more than satisfied.

  96. Brother Mike February 3, 2011 2:57 pm

Wow, Jane Evinger. Haven’t heard that name in a long time. Nice woman. Not nearly as intimidating as Mr. Scott and his editing tests.

  97. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 3:15 pm

    al,

The one’s I saw were not false black widows. In fact, about 12 years after my discovery, the papers published the “discovery of black widow spiders” on Oahu in and about the same area of Waianae.

  98. tommui February 3, 2011 3:27 pm

    D1 re: #94

I got several London Fogs over the years when I forgot it at home and was in cold SFO or SEA!

  99. Kaimuki Kid February 3, 2011 3:34 pm

    Al,
Did the false Black Widows have a pronouced Red Hourglass on their lower belly?

  100. Kaimuki Kid February 3, 2011 3:35 pm

    100

  101. Kaimuki Kid February 3, 2011 3:36 pm

    MIH,

How large were the Black Widows that you found?

  102. Manoa Mist February 3, 2011 3:38 pm

#40 Bulla: If it was Jane Ebinger, I think I just got an F.
Overall, I like UH’s recruiting class. A little disappointed we didn’t get more Hawaii kids, but you can’t blame a young man for wanting to experience the bright lights away from mom and dad on the mainland.
To the Hawaii kids who did sign, I’ll support those guys for life.

  103. Ronnie February 3, 2011 3:41 pm

Yikes! Thankfully, I didn’t see any black widows growing up in Kailua (but I’ve had a few in and around my house in Yorba Linda). As it was, my sister and I wouldn’t go into our room if we saw a flying cockroach! My dad would make one of my brothers find it (yeah right) and kill it before we’d go back in there…

The first centipede I saw was when we lived in navy housing in Pearl City. I used to have nightmares about centipede soup.

  104. Manoa Mist February 3, 2011 3:41 pm

#96Brother Mike: Mr. Scott was intimidating (remember his red Porsche?) but the last day of class he blew the whole deal. He told us we didn’t really need anything he taught us, because if we weren’t sure if the grammar was correct, we could just rewrite the sentence.
    He was right!

  105. Slugger February 3, 2011 3:43 pm

My sympathies to the ‘ohana of Sumiko Kikiloi. Keeping watch over the team from above.

    al,

Nope. Saw 5-6 recruits at the MBB game coming in with Coach Lumpkin, but didn’t meet any of them.

Can’t wait to see the guys out there on the field. Always a learning experience for me. I’ll be missing half of spring practices though. 🙁

  106. Kazz February 3, 2011 3:56 pm

The devil takes many forms. Two of which I know for sure:

    1) Chris Ault.
    2) Centipedes.

  107. kawika49 February 3, 2011 3:57 pm

Still got my mitts and liners from 40 yrs ago…lol.

  108. Kazz February 3, 2011 3:58 pm

Chris Ault kinda looks like a centipede.

Always real NASTY lookin. Step on him a few times, he’ll get mad and eventually crawl off somewhere to die.

  109. d1島 February 3, 2011 4:04 pm

Congrats Nalani on the your #2 performance at the Nike/SPARQ comibine. Looks like a solid prospect. Hopefully the home team can take a look at him.

  116. chawan_cut February 3, 2011 4:32 pm

after we beat down the buffaloes here in september, they’ll have lots to think about on the long flight headed back to boulder. CU isn’t built to handle the pac-10.

  117. OM February 3, 2011 4:37 pm

    Hawaii leading BSU 21 – 13

But why is Johnson our leading scorer and Wiseman Best defender not at Boise?

    Not doing their homework??

    Got left at Home…. ????

  118. kama krab February 3, 2011 4:39 pm

Oh and looking at that list,

If some people here think Luke Kaumatele is something special, I gotta tell you, take a look at his baby brother Canton. I can tell first hand that the boy is going to be a total beast by the time he is finished at Punahou. He was with us in Intermediate for the first half of the season and boy hand solid feet and great hands. We tried to see if he could catch passes from the TE position and the boy look so fluid running his route and catching the ball. Of course his final resting place with either be on the O-line or D-line but I will tell first hand that the boy is a freak of nature. This is the type of kid in the same breath as Kamalei Correa, Jeremy Tabuyo, and Reeve Kohler (sp?). I say Mack should come and see the boy and maybe even offer him cause he maybe out of sight come 2015.

  119. Kazz February 3, 2011 4:53 pm

Zane is being held from playing due to what is called a concussion he suffered at home against Utah State.

Trevor is apparently off handling academics according to Arnold.

8 assist = 16 points he scored total of 28 points for warriors…

in a positive way, of course.

  139. Kazz February 3, 2011 6:13 pm

How come nobody mentions the fact that the last time Miah Ostrowski played team bball was back in high school???

The guy jumps into D1 ball and does quite well so far. So much so that some are talking about Hiram Thompson as if he was the black plague. I mean it’s obvious Ostrowski is doing better than Hiram at this point, but I swear to God, some people in Hawaii are the greatest at treating the student-athletes that they supposedly support like garbage.

People got a beef with Hiram’s play, go bitch to Gib Arnold. It’s not like Hiram’s got a knife to his head begging for playing time. Same goes for the over-the-top criticism of ANY student-athlete for their play.

Sure people can have an opinion and I just said mine.

Don’t like it? Tell it to MY face. People should have some damn class towards our student-athletes.

  140. wedding planning book February 3, 2011 6:18 pm

Thanks so much for giving everyone remarkably wonderful chance to read from this blog. It is usually so sweet plus full of fun for me personally and my office co-workers to search your web site minimum three times in 7 days to read the new secrets you will have. And definitely, I am just certainly impressed considering the excellent pointers served by you. Certain 1 ideas in this article are clearly the most efficient I’ve ever had.

  141. Kazz February 3, 2011 6:19 pm

Wasn’t it not too long ago that a newly signed UH Warrior cited the fan “support” on blogs as one positive as to why he chose Hawaii???

While I still firmly believe that ALL coaches and student-athletes shouldn’t read a blog and take words firmly from them, if this kid cites it as a positive then what the heck??????

I encourage ALL cross-armed/trash-talkers hiding behind their keyboards to go on with their filth that reeks of past failures in their own athletic endeavors of yesterday. That way they can continue to feel like clueless when they wonder why some kids don’t want to play for UH.

I mean, why wouldn’t a student athlete want to come to play for fans that are ungrateful and disrespectful of the efforts of student-athletes anyway right?????

  142. Shoko February 3, 2011 6:28 pm

    Alojaz people!

Nice win by the Wahines yesterday and tonight for the Warriors. Hope SJSU beats the Vandals tonight. A four-game losing streak when they play the Warriors sounds good to me. 😉

  143. wafan February 3, 2011 6:33 pm

    Nytal!

  144. bighilofan2 February 3, 2011 6:35 pm

    well said Kazz well said.

and thats what we gotta do, the faithful. the hopeful. the Warrior Nation.

we gotta back up our team. its our team!

and as a brudda Tsaiko so eloquently said, kinda. wish those who want to go away the best of luck. wish those who want to play for us be remembered as Warriors for life and forever in our grace.

  150. al February 3, 2011 6:54 pm

    mih…what about you?

  151. al February 3, 2011 7:02 pm

    by the numbers…

    mbb are now 13-9.
say they wind 4 of the last seven.
then win one in the wac and out.
    they’d be 18-14.
close to getting an nit bid?

okay back track then. win six more games including the wac tourney and they’d end up 19-13.

    get chance eh?

  152. Bonny Brauner February 3, 2011 7:06 pm

this page is exactly what i have been searching for! found your blog bookmarked from a friend. I’ll also share it. thanks!

  153. madeinhawaii February 3, 2011 7:08 pm

    al,

I don’t go in until the 25th.. doing okay so far…. meds have my BP well under control and I’m actually feelling a lot better. I’m hopeful that a stent will be all that I need to open up those arteries sufficiently. Still scary, though, anytime anybody wants to stick three feet of wire, a camera, and balloons up your body, eh?

Everybody should get their cholesterol levels checked regularly… play it safe.

  154. RainbowCliff February 3, 2011 7:08 pm

Mr. Tsai, THANK YOU so VERY MUCH on adding the photo shot of myself and Mr. Cedric
Washington picture to your Warrior Beat. I have spoken to the kind gentlemen and he is so happy and excited to this auspicious opportunity. His nephew former Rainbow Warrior Rodney Washington is PROUD of this moment for his uncle as even though they live miles apart your BLOG has brought them together sharing a WONDERFUL moment !

Superbowl shirts for your interested readers are on there way as the larger sizes I will be sending off early morning. You never know who you will meet that has had the Aloha Spirit from the Islands of Hawaii. Former Bow Rodney Washington lives in Dallas Texas, raising his family and teaching at the high school level. His goal one day is to come back and coach
for the Rainbow Warriors as his experience playing for the bows was valuable and memorable.

Have a good evening as your thoughtfullness has brought two siblings of Hawaii connection
together once again. Mahalo for your GREATNESS !

  155. Shoko February 3, 2011 7:25 pm

Upsets galore tonight. SJSU beats Idaho in two OTs and Fresno State beats NSMU in one OT. But the Warriors brought the heat and didn’t need OT to put a beatdown on BSU.

  156. Shoko February 3, 2011 7:33 pm

Prayers to MIH. Have faith, Braddah as things will work out. Get the procedure done and I have no doubt you’ll be back on the blog in no time. 🙂

DPK, prayers galore. See you back on the blog in the near future. Just have to rest and know that people here are hoping for a quick recovery.

As for me, no more sports tonight as the wife has insisted that I take out the trash for the past hour. 😆

  157. A-House February 3, 2011 8:19 pm

Continued healing prayes to DPK, MIH as he prepares his his journey, and J(J)s Mom.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  161. OM February 3, 2011 8:49 pm

If Hawaii has a chance to meet USU in the WAC finals again…

Hawaii will win the WAC Tournament and on to NCAA… You heard it right here Win WAC!!

Bring on the March Madness… I’m beginning to like this game…

Like I predicted they still have a chance to win 20 games before it’s done…

That’s why I booked Las Vegas the same time I bought this year’s season ticket!!!

But Miah need to start every game from here on out… with what Eight (8) Assist!!!

Plus he’s coming back for more next year. Miah is having an Amazing run, his dad Kui is surely enjoying and watching over Miah game from above.

    GO Warriors!

  162. Kainoa February 3, 2011 9:16 pm

I love the info you present here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m shocked at how fast your blog loaded on my cell phone .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyhow, excellent blog!

  181. wedding planning guide February 4, 2011 3:10 am

I together with my pals ended up looking at the excellent tricks found on your web page and so before long I got a horrible feeling I had not expressed respect to the web site owner for those strategies. Those women became certainly thrilled to read through them and have now actually been having fun with those things. Appreciation for simply being simply considerate as well as for deciding upon some brilliant information millions of individuals are really eager to discover. Our honest regret for not expressing gratitude to earlier.

prayers and blessings to you for your upcoming procedure. what a wake up call for all of us 🙂 life is too short, we gotta decided if we are going to eat to live or live to eat; and that is the beginning of the long journey. i don’t know what was the trigger to get me up and moving again, but it’s like a avalanche…. once it starts you can’t stop it. working out 5-6 days a week at 5 am is the price i pay to live longer and enjoy my friends and family…. and to continue doing ministry work…..so it’s not a bad trade off in my opinion. good luck and God bless 🙂

Question for the recruiting experts. Jezzy and Al, what happened to defensive tackle Walton Taumoepeau from Cerritos College? Is he an academic casualty? I thought he was going to sign with Iowa State, but noticed that he didn’t sign with anyone?

  191. Pauoa Boy February 4, 2011 5:53 am

Great game for the Warrior Basketball team. Glad to see that Miah Ostrowski is the point guard that we have been sorely waiting for. Someone who is poised and can create and makes his teammates better. Although I’d rather see Miah catching the pigskin and scoring touchdowns, he is a nice addition to the basketball team and I hope he continues to lead this team into some post season action. Nothing against Hiram but some guys just got it at the point guard position and see the floor better and I think Coach Gib is seeing what Miah brings to the hardwood.

    Great night for UHAD…

  193. Bulla February 4, 2011 6:07 am

good morning tsaikos bothe near and far,

LOI has come and gone, let us keep our fingers crossed that everyone matriculates through the proverbial ‘system’…..time will tell.

when you do look at our current situation of local recruiting, one could surmise that there is a lot that is left on the table. our top HS athletes are leaving the protective shores of our island to venture elsewhere to pursue the sport they love, and to earn a college degree. we have more than enough talent to compete at the D-1A level with our homegrown athletes, yet we find our recruiting taking us to the corners of the earth and ‘hoping’ that everything will work out.

i am not on a soapbox, but just making an observation at our most recent LOI; and it is common knowledge that there are more JC coaches recruiting on the North Shore than ever before because of the academic climate. we should be thankful, that coaches from all levels of the collegiate ranks still come to ACTIVELY recruit our local athletes. good luck to all the student-athletes out there, it’s tough, and the bottom line is…..GET YOUR DEGREE!!!!

Good morning Tsaikos. Another great day.

  196. Pauoa Boy February 4, 2011 6:10 am

Great Job to all the Coaches for this years recruiting class. On paper they look promising, quick, fast, big, strong, etc… I hope our football team is finally turning the corner in becoming the upper echelon of college football teams. Oh well about the local boys staying home, we got a few… and the ones that stayed are going to be beastin in Warrior Green come real soon. Anyway, reading Dave Reardons write up on Mike Edwards kind of pisses me off. It’s like you have nothing better to write about than bring up some ol shit!

Okay so bruddah Mike Edwards got into some BS while at Tennessee and granted although dangerous and stupid at the time, he took care of business and cleared things up. My thing is why write about something negative on a guy we just signed to our football team. I mean why bring up ol shit that’s in the past and has been cleared up and taken care of. So what if Coach Mack says it was a prank gone wrong or whatever who gives a shit! Frikkin he already learned from his mistake and moved on, did what he was supposed to do and got his business taken care of. I think it’s piss poor to keep bringing up someones past mistakes cause you have nothing better to write about. I mean are we still gonna hold it over this guys head? To bruddah Mike Edwards, thank you for choosing to become a Warrior and bleed green. I for one don’t give a crap about your past as long as you’ve put it behind you learned from it and moved on. All I want and expect out of you is to give your all on the football field, in the classroom, and being a positive example in representing yourself, your teammates, and our beloved University! I think you could be and impact player and someone who can become successful for our team. I garrans you, if you throw down on the football field like it says you can, nobody will remember shit about what happened back in the day, you feel me!

  197. Bulla February 4, 2011 6:13 am

i agree, i thought that the article was pretty weak, we all find what we look for…….let’s look for the good!

  199. whitey February 4, 2011 6:16 am

Good morning bulla. excellent point about getting further education. i am glad to see more coaches from the mainland come to hawaii to recruit as this gives more of our kids a chance to further their education and help them on their personal road of life. we may lose a lot of kids to the mainland schools, but main thing that they are getting ahead (hopefully) and can pursue their dreams. wish all of them well, both recruits and coaches.

  200. Pauoa Boy February 4, 2011 6:17 am

Yup, just kind of rub me the wrong way with Dave’s choice of words das all. Mike Edwards could definitely be that guy in the secondary that can lockdown anyone. Plus with my man John Hardy-Tuliau in the mix, our secondary can be downright scary!

  201. whitey February 4, 2011 6:19 am

Good morning PB. Hope all is well with you and the corp. You right about mike e. Time to move on.

  210. RainbowCliff February 4, 2011 6:40 am

#162 Kainoa: Living here in LA there are shirt vendors at every corner of South Central, Downtown and East LA. Hell, even the local police shop at their favorite vendor to get Superbowl shirts, Laker Championship gear and now coming up NBA All Star apparel. It is the way of LIFE here in LA as we all try to make a buck. The shirts cost much less then your NFL license products and are made from better quality material and quite frankly are better looking then your NFL license mess that they charge you $25.00 and up for their official crap.

Mr. Washington is giving to those readers on this blog who were interested in having a GREAT superbowl shirt “FREE”as a gesture of aloha that he and his nephew ex-bow Rodney Washington experience when they stayed here in Hawaii. What is ILLEGAL in Hawaii does not carry the same status here as ALL big cities got a lot of people and you got to know how to “HUSTLE” for the buck especially if you don’t have a career job.

“Book em Dano” will get in line for a shirt as it is a BIG TIME event here in LA and EVERYBODY celebrates the Superbowl as it is all about entertainment, food, drinking and parties with everyone having a Superbowl shirt not only from your license NFL but from the many vendors who do a great job creating their artistry on 100% cotton !

    Have a good morning !

  211. bighilofan2 February 4, 2011 6:41 am

i mean, urban meyer was doing what Coach Mack is doing a coupla years ago, worser case scenario.

    you coulda been nicer Dave.

  212. bighilofan2 February 4, 2011 6:43 am

alla us gotta step up samoa. especially coach. 9/3/11 is right around da corner.

my new years reso is no mo concussions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and do what i must to motivate da coaches to motivate demselfs an da Warriors to make sure no mo concussions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful morning here in LA as I am on the roads to enjoy it. Take

  216. Pauoa Boy February 4, 2011 7:08 am

Pretty excited about this years recruiting class as I think we got some beasts to work with. Plus with the grayshirts from last year, oohwee planny guys to work with and create a solid group to kill teams on the field. No moa Boise State Blue Balls this year, so there should be no reason we don’t spank everyone in conference and win the WAC title outright again! Plus with the move to the MWC next year I think the Coaches are setting us up for success starting with solid recruiting classes. Keep up the great work Coaches and just coach and develop our talent like we know you can. I see planny potential and lots of upside our players posess just help them unleash the fury on the field!

  217. Pomai February 4, 2011 7:31 am

Kind of agree with PB about Reardon’s writeup, with all the good things with the new class why go with the negative?

  218. whitey February 4, 2011 7:52 am

the more i think about what bulla said, the more i like it. whether the players choose to stay with da warriors or go away is not as important as they have an opportunity to further their education and life road. that is the higher priority for the players and families. the more mainland coaches here to recruit, the better for all of the hawaii hs players.

  219. whitey February 4, 2011 7:57 am

i agree with most about mike e, but not going criticize dave r cause that is his job and his own personal writings. mike e will have the chance to show us all what he can do both on and off the field when he enrolls here, so we welcome him to da warrior ohana. dave r will keep on writing as it is his livelihood. we may not agree with him, but that is what life is all about, always two sides to a story.

  220. whitey February 4, 2011 7:59 am

  223. Pauoa Boy February 4, 2011 8:08 am

whitey – howzit, yeah I know Dave gotta keep writing and anything to grab the readers attention and make a story but c’mon Dave…seriously. Finally we land a big time 4 star recruit and first thing you do after signing day is write and article about some negativity in bruddahs past. I mean how about writing about the potential of this class or something more positive. If I was Mike Edwards and read that article I would write Dave Reardons name down and if he ever wanted to do an interview with me or talk to me about football I would tell him suck deez nuts! IMO, just saying…

  224. Pauoa Boy February 4, 2011 8:12 am

Anyway, so Kana Silva got some wheels…how big him? Does he have the size like Mana or smaller. Regardless can use that kind of speed somewhere on the field…

  225. Kindra Sondergaard February 4, 2011 8:26 am

this page is exactly what i’ve been looking for! I found this article bookmarked from a friend. I will also share it. thanks!

  226. Bryson February 4, 2011 8:39 am

Wow this has to be said Dave Reardon is a a-hole…This kid made a mistake when he was 17yrs old and played a prank that went too far…The thing is he was never charged…Unlike like CB,Pisa and Davone this kid was not charged….So why even bring something like this up? I understand journalism and they got a job to do but why write such a piece that has no bearing on who this individual really is…Dave Reardon is the main reason I chose not to read SB because this guy at times seems like he’s more of a Star magazine reporter with the stories he writes…I hope UH takes his media credentials away ..I guarantee Mike Edwards will see this story I can only imagine how that will make him feel….

  233. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2011 9:36 am

PauoaBoy…right on the kinipopo! IMHO, Mr. Edwards mad ethe right choice because the enviornment here will allow him to “grow” up. Da bruddahs ova hea take care of each other and it is ohana.
Welcome to the Warrior Ohana, Mike. Hit he books, hit the weights, hit the field, focus on your future. You found the best place to accomplish your dreams!

    GOO WARRIORS!

  234. Turfwar February 4, 2011 10:22 am

Thank you PB. Well said. For me it’s not even that Mike is a great athlete. The courts have spoken and it was decided that there was no felony committed and yet Dave refers to the incident as a felony. I know in the business world if I accused a guy of committing a felony and I was wrong it could lead to litigation. If Mike was indeed found guilty of a felony he would have served a minimum sentence of some kind. He was not. End of story. I have hired many men with records and this kind of stuff is not to be taken lightly. And certainly not for the purpose of selling a newspaper.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
