The middle man

By Stephen Tsai on April 3, 2011

Last year, George Daily-Lyles was the No. 1 middle linebacker in the Warriors’ base 4-3 defense. Thing was, for the final two-thirds of the 2010 season, the Warriors were mostly in the “45,” a scheme in which the nickelback position known as quarter replaced the middle linebacker. This spring, with outside linebacker Corey Paredes sidelined while recovering from shoulder surgery and a linebacker being used as a stand-up pass rusher, Daily-Lyles remains on the field in nearly every defensive scheme. […]

Football Saturday

By Stephen Tsai on April 2, 2011

For the halfway point — eighth of 15 spring practices — the Warriors were in full pads, but not full contact. “Did you hit anybody today?” quarterback Bryant Moniz asked linebacker Aaron Brown. Brown responded: “Not today.” Moniz said: “Then it wasn’t a full-contact practice. … When Aaron hits somebody, then it’s official. It’s on.” Among the highlights: • Billy Ray Stutzmann and Miah Ostrowski were the No. 1 slotbacks. • Left wideout Darius Bright made two terrific leaping catches […]

Friday’s contest

By Stephen Tsai on April 1, 2011

Want a football glove autographed by former UH running back Alex Green? To enter the drawing, please post: Spring time is football time. Avis picks a winner tonight. * * * * * Among the memorable things about UH’s pro day were the cheers. They came from former UH teammates, some who had not seen each  other in three months, rooting for players to do well in the running, jumping and lifting tests. Even players who completed their eligibility at […]

Pro Day

By Stephen Tsai on March 31, 2011

CARSON, Calif. — Former Warriors were impressive at today’s pro day at the Home Depot Center. Seventeen former UH football players went through speed, jumping, agility and weight-lifting tests. Afterward, representatives from each NFL team met, then came up with a consensus on what they decided would be the final results. Slotback Kealoha Pilares apparently has fully recovered from a knee injury suffered in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl. One NFL scout timed Pilares at 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard […]

Wednesday's notes

By Stephen Tsai on March 30, 2011

Because of the NFL lockout, players who were eligible for the draft in previous years are not allowed to participate in college-sponosored pro days this year. That means that former UH quarterback Colt Brennan, defensive end Melila Purcell III and cornerback JoPierre Davis are not eligible to participate in UH’s pro day tomorrow in Carson, Calif.  All three had agreed to attend until UH received a ruling saying those players’ participation was not allowed. Here’s the pro day roster: Cameron […]

D-ends step up

By Stephen Tsai on March 29, 2011

The Warriors made an easy transition back to work yesterday after a one-week hiatus for spring break: • Defensive left end Liko Satele’s left arm was in a brace because of an injured left forearm. Satele won’t participate in contact drills the rest of the spring, but he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in August. UH head coach Greg McMackin said Satele  played well during the first five spring practices. • Paipai Falemalu, the […]

Back to work

By Stephen Tsai on March 28, 2011

After a one-week hiatus — spring break! — the Warriors resume spring training this afternoon (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.). Among the things to look for: • The return of slotback Miah Ostrowski, who spent the past three months with the UH basketball team. There will be some restrictions on Ostrowski for practices today and Wednesday, but he is one of the top contenders for a starting job. • There should be more clarity on the depth chart at quarterback. […]

The simple life

By Stephen Tsai on March 27, 2011

A long time ago, I was sitting in the waiting area in an East Coast basketball office. That was when I learned that, at the time, the head coach had a secretary who had a secretary who had a receptionist. I’m reminded of that during the NCAA Tournament while watching televised sideline shots of head coaches who look like CEOs. And I’m reminded of that while wandering around UH. UH does indeed run a down-to-earth program. The football office still […]
