The day after

By Stephen Tsai on September 25, 2011

After winning by 42 points, the Warriors’ to-do list is considerably shorter. The first-unit players were nearly flawless in the first half. And the Warriors showed there is a lot of talent throughout the roster. But now the Warriors face, perhaps, the most difficult challenge on the schedule. It’s never easy going to Louisiana Tech, and the Bulldogs are coming off a strong performance, on the road, against an SEC team. But, for now, the Warriors have righted whatever emotional […]

Game day: UC Davis

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2011

Bryant Moniz tied an NCAA record with his seven first-half touchdown passes. He also broke the school records for TD passes in a half and most passing yards (424 yards). * * * * * One of the specialists asked why the WB never posts any group pictures of the specialists. Well, they never asked. So they asked. From left: Kenton Chun, Kyle Niiro, Alex Dunnachie, Luke Ingram and Tyler Hadden. * * * * * During down time, there […]

Walking the walk

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2011

In what is believed to be the first time since 2007, a visiting college football team will conduct a practice on the Manoa campus. Because of its tight schedule and the unavailability of Aloha Stadium this afternoon, the UC Davis football team is set to have its walk-through at the Ching complex this evening. After arriving today, the Aggies will visit Pearl Harbor, check into a hotel, then prepare for the walk-through. The Warriors’ walk-through will be this afternoon, also […]

Thursday

From today’s practice: • Defensive tackle Haku Correa underwent surgery today for a displaced fracture in his foot. Usually, this is a season-ending injury, but a new aggressive operation will be used in the hope he can return in six weeks. • Left tackle Clayton Laurel has been hobbling because of a sore foot. But he is expected to play. And while David Lefotu has received a lot of work at right guard, Andrew Faaumu will get the start. So […]

Ilaoa withdraws from telecast

By Stephen Tsai on September 21, 2011

Because of work and family obligations, former UH running back Nate llaoa requested — and received — a release from serving as football analyst for Oceanic’s telecasts of Warrior football games. Oceanic’s first UH football telecast is Saturday’s game against UC Davis. Ilaoa had participated in meetings, rehearsals and production sessions. But Ilaoa just started a new job that requires time that would be taken away from his game preparation. Oceanic will go with a two-announcer booth: Robert Kekaula and […]

Tuesday

From today’s practice: • Left wideout Darius Bright was absent for what was termed personal reasons. • Terence Bell moved over from right slotback (after previously moving from right wideout) to play left wideout. Bell and Allen Sampson split reps with the first team. • With Clayton Laurel resting a sore shoulder, Jordan Loeffler took reps as the No. 1 left tackle. Loeffler also worked at right tackle. • David Lefotu, fully healthy from a knee issue, and Andrew Faaumu […]

Back to business

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2011

During today’s news conference, Greg McMackin said: • There will some personnel changes in the lineup, although he was not specific. • He said the Warriors need to improve on the perimeter defense, pass protection and, although they were in the correct position in the defensive secondary against UNLV, they needed to make plays. • Right guard David Lefotu will get playing time, although it was not announced if it would be as a starter. • Defensive tackle Haku Correa […]

Aftershock

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2011

LAS VEGAS — Well, that was surprising. The UH coaches will have to address several areas in this week’s practices. And after UC Davis, the Warriors are back on the road. With the bye between the Louisiana Tech and San Jose State road games, fans will have seen the Warriors at Aloha Stadium only twice in the season’s first seven weeks. Which brings us to what appears to be the majority opinion for the Warriors: No more back-to-back road games. […]
