Ilaoa withdraws from telecast

Because of work and family obligations, former UH running back Nate llaoa requested — and received — a release from serving as football analyst for Oceanic’s telecasts of Warrior football games.

Oceanic’s first UH football telecast is Saturday’s game against UC Davis.

Ilaoa had participated in meetings, rehearsals and production sessions. But Ilaoa just started a new job that requires time that would be taken away from his game preparation.

Oceanic will go with a two-announcer booth: Robert Kekaula and Darren Hernandez.

    Hey ST,

How do you see the football team doing after that loss to UNLV???? You think they’ll bounce back? I know a lot of people now losing faith in this team because of that loss.

  5. WarriorNY September 21, 2011 5:53 am

    Morning All,

I wanted to pass this bit of news along to you all… Seems to be a good idea… It does however resemble the old WAC…

whaaaa??!!, am I 1st???, gadzzz!!, it’s 11am here in texas?

Just to get it of my chest, since I’ve been noticing this situation for much too long; I don’t like the slackadaisical body english that qb-Moniz displays. It sets the wrong tone for the offense…..he has to be the leader of the offense…so there needs to be a display of urgency. a giddiyup in his persona. but, that’s just my observance.

  7. mctruck September 21, 2011 5:56 am

o.k., o.k, system must be slackadaisical.

Aranda made some reference in that area regarding the defense. He said he wants his players to celebrate good plays, meaning congratulating teammates when they do well, meaning playing with enthusiasm, meaning having fun.

For everything about college football, the most important thing is it’s supposed to be fun.

  13. mctruck September 21, 2011 6:03 am

If I’m not mistaken???…the run-n-shoot is suppose to keep the defense off-balance?? When the man who pulls the trigger is moving about in slow motion, it gives the defense too much time to access what’s happening???, yes/no??…..just sayin.

Clay has been practicing at free safety.

Did he play in the UNLV game? I know they would like to redshirt him, if possible.

They’re giving more reps to Brandon Leslie this week.

  17. letsgowarriors September 21, 2011 6:07 am

i think he played in the UW game according to player participation.

Moniz has never been accurate. Bryant has never been a long ball qb. Greg Alexander was the same. Colt Brennan and Timmy Chang were true long ballers. When he had the rythm going, that’s when Moniz clicks. Even Colt and Timmy had moments when they lost the rythm. Moniz when he has the rythm, is a good 10-20-25 yard passer. With Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares, that’s all you needed. I thought this years team was the best in terms if talent, since 1966. I was wrong. It is a good team. But not a super team. It will do well against so so opponents, but struggle against upper tear opponents. Maybe with luck, a Aloha bowl is in the offering. I love this team win or lose!!!!

Wow, that gives minimal time to adjust to Hawaii time and minimal practice time at Aloha Stadium. Such is the life of a D-IAA school suffering from huge state budget cuts.

The head of the BCS explained the process for the MWC’s AQ waiver appeal after this season. A majority of these voters will have to vote in favor of the MWC. Will Idaho support BSU and the rest of the MWC?

No matter how badly they are raided, the Big 12 and Big East will keep their AQ status for 2011, 2012, and 2013. So, if there is only 1 football team left in the Big East, that school AUTOMATICALLY gets a BCS Bowl bid through the 2013 season!

Barring a complete disembowelment of the conference, the Big East — and the Big 12, too, for that matter — will retain its automatic BCS bid through the 2013 football season.

Even if a league does drop below NCAA-mandated levels for championship play, there is a two-year grace period during which conferences can regain their original numbers.

There are no provisions within the BCS rules for AQ conferences to lose their automatic qualifying status.

  28. Garret September 21, 2011 7:08 am

I’m sure that everyone saw the news that the Pac-12 will not expand. Some interesting tidbits here. Note that there are 5 years left on the Big 12’s ESPN contract for their first-choice TV rights…that is expected to triple if the schools stay together (bringing them to $30 mil/year per school).

I’ve been told Texas and Oklahoma officials will get together in the next week to iron out differences and pledge to at least a five-year commitment in the Big 12.

There will be a sense of urgency to add one school and possibly more to the Big 12, sources said.

The Longhorns, who had been hoping the Big 12 could stay alive from the beginning, got the news early Tuesday from Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott that he didn’t have the votes to expand.

Sources told Orangebloods.com at least six Pac-12 presidents opposed further expansion, and Larry Scott needed nine of 12 votes to approve any new additions.

Sources said after it became clear the Pac-12 didn’t have the votes to admit Oklahoma and Oklahoma State without Texas, Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus contacted UT regents and urged them not leave the Big 12 for the Pac-12.

  29. WarriorNY September 21, 2011 7:12 am

    Garret,

I’d be surprised if any of those voters, sans BSU, will vote in favor of it. They have no incentive and only takes $$$ out of their own pockets…

  30. Garret September 21, 2011 7:19 am

Some funny things about Oklahoma now saying that they want equal revenue sharing:

    1. Who has been getting the most money from the Big 12 conference distributions over the years? Oklahoma, not Texas. Has Oklahoma felt badly about getting more than Texas and millions more than other Big 12 schools? Hah.

    2. Who sued so that individual schools and conferences could sell TV rights instead of having all D-I schools share in a NCAA basketball-like TV deal? Oklahoma. Oklahoma made sure that a school like UH would never be part of Oklahoma’s TV deal. Have they complained about the hundreds of millions more than UH they have gotten from TV since then? Hah.

    3. Oklahoma gets an average of $7.5 mil from their Tier 3 TV rights according to the link below, and since that number has increased each year I’ve read that it is up to $8.5 mil now. According to the Business of College Sports, Texas was getting $338k from their Tier 3 TV rights (too many of their games are picked by ESPN or Fox) until they got the Longhorn Network. Some other Big 12 schools were getting $0 for their Tier 3 TV rights. Did Oklahoma offer to share some of their money? Or did they just start talking about sharing Tier 3 money once Texas started making more than them?

  31. Garret September 21, 2011 7:21 am

I’d be surprised if any of those voters, sans BSU, will vote in favor of it. They have no incentive and only takes $$$ out of their own pockets…

    WarriorNY,

That is why the MWC needs the support of all 5 non-AQ conferences and at least 1 AQ conference. However, the non-AQ conferences probably don’t see the benefit of putting the MWC above them. And the AQ conferences don’t get any extra money by making the MWC AQ. Still, some voters might be open-minded…but I cannot see Idaho voting to make BSU part of an AQ conference.

  32. Garret September 21, 2011 7:23 am

This talk about “sharing” non-national TV rights worries me because UH is in the same position as Texas. The MWC can tell UH to throw the entire PPV deal money into the conference TV pot (we’ve even seen this mentioned in the Star-Advertiser), which would end up costing UH about $1.5 mil.

  33. WarriorNY September 21, 2011 7:32 am

    Garret,

Good information… Idaho can probably use their vote as leverage to get into the conference next year. It seems they would have a huge role in this decision…

  34. Kevin September 21, 2011 7:32 am

I thought football was won and lost in the trenches?

Oh, I see, if you lose though, easier to pick out ONE individual who’s vitality LIVES off of the performance of his line of defense.

The offensive line is thin, injuries and lack of depth/game experience are not a secret and this is a long term issue we’ll have to deal with for the rest of the season… but still easier to pick out one individual I guess.

Kind of like a mental protective barrier some people need to have to try to help convince themselves the issues to fix are easier than they really are.

  35. RedZone September 21, 2011 7:41 am

    Go Warriors!!!!!

    Start quick and finish strong!!!!!!

  36. kev-1 September 21, 2011 7:46 am

I’m all for calling out individuals when they are not doing their part, but I don’t agree that the performance issues over the last couple of games are Moniz’s fault. Kevin is right, the line is struggling. That’s obviously going to affect the QB.

I’m more confused with the play calling than anything else. Game one we saw what we thought was a new wrinkle to the offense with Moniz on running plays, but haven’t seen that “wrinkle” since. What happened to that aspect of the offense? It was so successful the first game, why abandon it? I know it isn’t going to catch anyone off guard like it did the first game, but there is definitely a place for it in this offense.

  37. 1sportsfan September 21, 2011 7:47 am

Part of the problem may be with the receiving corps. Going back to Bess & Co. to Salas & Pilares, those guys played every down and rarely had injuries. And they were most feared after they caught the ball. And they blocked fiercely for each other. So if QB and receivers can’t get on the same page, the offense doesn’t work. Let’s hope the UNLV game shook everyone up to salvage the season.

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid September 21, 2011 7:47 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

We need to get better by doing our best one practice at a time, one game at a time. That goes for coaches and players. Last season we had the same record at this point. Its time to strap it on and work hard. I like Stephen’s #8. Redemption begins this morning at practice. Nuff said.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  39. Kevin September 21, 2011 8:01 am

Carry over from a sleepless night for myself…

The traders were closely watching the action in Under Armour on Thursday, after reports in the London could soon ink a deal to acquire its rival for as much as $100 / share.

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/44540607/Nike_Hearts_Under_Armour

Neither company would comment on the report, however Bloomberg is saying a Nike spokesperson tells them there’s no truth to it. Meawhile, other sources suggest the acquisition could make sense.

Karen Finerman is also skeptical. “If a spokesperson said no truth there’s no truth. Otherwise they would say no comment. I just can’t imagine it.”

Trader Joe Terranova sees it differently. “Nike would give Under Armour something that they need – international exposure. Under Armour does not have that. I don’t know the deal is dead on arrival.”

  40. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 8:06 am

Billy Ray Stutzmann is sitting out practice. Scott Harding is with the first team.

  41. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 8:08 am

Darius Bright is back, but Allen Sampson is with the 1s.

  42. d1shima September 21, 2011 8:08 am

I didn’t read that as a rip on QB1. Just an opinion of the state of things as one person sees it.

That view is not without merit as one knock lots of folks had in last preseason was the lack of a long-ball and his endurance as the season wore on. It was stated that those things were addressed in the off-season training regimen.

I mentioned it recently that 3 of his receivers are now in the NFL (counting AG outta da backfield) and to date, as 1sportsfan notes, a lot of things they did have yet to be replaced.

It’s not a negative to say that plenny of last year’s 5k yards of passing were YAC or that maybe the promise of improved range may have been a little overhyped; it just is what it is…

  43. d1shima September 21, 2011 8:10 am

    Yay D. Bright!

    Ouch Billy Ray 🙁

  44. d1shima September 21, 2011 8:11 am

Sampson is where with the 1’s?

  45. A-House September 21, 2011 8:12 am

what is so sacred with UH offense that it refuses to attack the perimeter?

UH got blasted by Udub and UNLV on either side!!!!!!!!

  46. Garret September 21, 2011 8:12 am

    Kevin,

UH owes a lot of its improved UA deal to the great position it was in at the time–would UA have been as interested in UH if UH wasn’t coming off a Sugar Bowl appearance and historical levels of media coverage and TV ratings? When the current deal runs out, we need UH to have similar success…or expect negotiations to be more difficult even if UA isn’t bought by Nike.

  47. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 8:13 am

Something going on this morning? It’s only me and Mike Cherry here today.

  48. Garret September 21, 2011 8:15 am

Billy Ray Stutzmann is sitting out practice. Scott Harding is with the first team.

Good for Harding but it is really sad that another starting receiver is having to miss practice. UH needs its receivers to build chemistry with Moniz and with each other–the patterns that UH’s receivers can coordinate with each other and the blocking that can happen when they are all in sync is hard to do if they cannot practice together.

OL and WR were the 2 least experienced positions for UH entering the season, the positions where UH had the most question marks. Let us hope that the rash of injuries at both positions stops soon.

  49. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 8:15 am

Today’s No. 1 receivers: LWO Sampson, LSB Harding, RSB Clapp, RWO Pollard. Who had that four-player parlay?

  50. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 8:16 am

Jaymes Song of AP has arrived.

  51. Kevin September 21, 2011 8:17 am

    D1,

It is a “rip” on QB1. When there is mention of how the R&S is supposed to keep opposing defenses off balance and then one points to the trigger man “moving in slow motion” anyone that has even loosly followed football could see that it’s not like he’s gotten 4-5 seconds of safety back there.

I too can make observations on how someone shows up late for work one day all and point out how his particular car has too much mileage on it, doesn’t have AC, and the the upholstery is coming off, but to direct their attention to that and to bypass the fact that there was a 15 car pile-up on the freeway is something else.

  52. JB September 21, 2011 8:18 am

Hey nobody has mentioned what a great job Graves did when he came in at QB.

Five out of Five passes and a touchdown drive on his first series..

This guy is going to be good, and should get much more playing time..

  53. LizKauai (iPad) September 21, 2011 8:22 am

    Get the scoops, ST!

  54. d1shima September 21, 2011 8:23 am

    Kevin,

My comment was because I thought you were commenting on a chiefgator’s comment. It seems like you have an issue with mctruck’s view about “slow motion” that I read as meaning pre-snap.

  55. al September 21, 2011 8:26 am

…and billy ray is sitting because?

  56. d1shima September 21, 2011 8:27 am

Have to admit that I didn’t see anything of Graves because you cannot see the field from the parking lot at Boyd Stadium however, if I’m not mistaken, it was stated that by that time the Rebels had a mix of 1’s and 2’s on the field and were likely running their base/old stuff…stuff that all the QB’s had a chance to study on film.

Graves did good and is prolly the future but I don’t think there needs to be a QB controversy at this time.

  57. BigWave96744 September 21, 2011 8:28 am

Brian Clay played in the UDUB game… There was a clear shot of him on the telecast..

Jersey said Clay and #8.. darker skin than Charles Clay, #87

  58. SailorBlue September 21, 2011 8:29 am

Garrett ~ here’s an interesting Q&A with Navy AD Chet Gladchuck.

    http://navy.scout.com/2/1108796.html

Main discussion is what is going on with the conferences. Navy’s in a slightly different situation being independent, but a lot of the discussion points apply to Hawaii as well.

  59. Slugger September 21, 2011 8:32 am

    Morning, ST!

Thanks for the updates from practice.

The team will bounce back. GO WARRIORS!!!

    Good morning, gang!

  60. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 8:34 am

I think the slow motion/lack of urgency that mctruck was referring to was Moniz’ getting the play from Rolo, breaking huddle, getting his line set up etc.

During the UW game at around 8-9 minutes I too was wondering why there wasn’t any sense of urgency.

Even the most amateur of amateur arm chair QB’s could see that UW would do anything and everything to run down that clock. Every second was important.

Mack then went on record as saying they “ran out of time” in the UW game.

    Oh wells.

  61. Kevin September 21, 2011 8:34 am

    Garret,

I’m confused at the direction you are going with this post in relation to what I have posted last night and today.

    Garret:

    September 21st, 2011 at 8:12 am

    Kevin,

UH owes a lot of its improved UA deal to the great position it was in at the time…

    Ok, that’s a given.

would UA have been as interested in UH if UH wasn’t coming off a Sugar Bowl appearance and historical levels of media coverage and TV ratings?

Now this is the interesting part. I’ve commented numerous times that knowing this, why didn’t Nike, our current outfitter then, see the similar value in UA? Nike did send a rep to UH and it’s not like Coach Mack was hell bent on a new outfitter because he just took over the program. UA essentially dismissed those accomplishments and really didn’t show much commitment to increasing what they previously offered to UH.

When the current deal runs out, we need UH to have similar success…or expect negotiations to be more difficult even if UA isn’t bought by Nike.

And that is a given too.

So… when a company that didn’t see much value in you is rumored to purchase the majority of stock in the company that did think you were worth something… I think I have just cause for concern.

Now, if the rumor comes true and the subsequent assumptions that UA will still operate with a big amount of “autonomy” (oh… there’s that word again!!!) then my concerns are moot.

  62. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 8:35 am

    #59

    Agreed. Imo Moniz > Graves.

  63. Kevin September 21, 2011 8:42 am

    iwwthm,

People should know by now, that in this system ,the amount of game experience and physical reps one is given at QB.. they will be far superior at game speed.

  64. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 8:43 am

So if the BIG12/Big LEast has 1 team left in the conference…it still gets an automatic bowl bid?

But how many teams do you need to consider yourself a conference?

I thought a conference needed x-number of Div 1A schools to qualify as a conference.

  65. eagle September 21, 2011 8:46 am

    Sorry if already covered …

i was thinking ’bout this when BC just repeated it…

since Boise’s HC Peterson is a UC-Davis alumnus QB & former HC:

we SHOULD Expect UCD to have ALL the Inside Dope on WHAT Works against UH — The How to Beat UH Book as Dominated by BSU …

ADD that to Our OL Problems; what a Thought … Shudder, [Not as in David]

Execution, Mis-Direction, Mind Games, Trick Plays, etc.

Good Thing we’re @ Home and “should” dominate many other phases …

  66. eagle September 21, 2011 8:48 am

    iwwthm

i think the minimum for a conference is actually six

it may be eight for automatic qualification such as NCAA tournament

NOT SURE what Curves BCS stuck int there (i’m SURE there’s quite a few)

  67. SteveM September 21, 2011 8:49 am

    Good morning everyone!

  68. bigislandkurt September 21, 2011 8:50 am

The whole Graves things does not even factor into the equation at this point. Obviously he is the future because Rolo passed over Shane Austin to give the future QB some live bullets. But it is what it is — the future. So long as Mo is healthy, he is the QB this year.

Now I’ve always been critical of Mo’s long ball. I’ve come to the realization that he is a short ball guy. Very rarely will we see a streak pattern completed in the Moniz Era. Colt and Tim C. were the last of our great long ball QB’s. I’m sure we will have one again one day, but looking at the current stable, it doesn’t appear to be the case at least for the immediate future.

    BIK

    BIK

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 8:51 am

    #69

I guess since football is semi-autonomous from the NCAA it would make sense.

You know I’d love to see a 1 team Big LEast conference with a 3-9 record go to a BCS game.

  70. letsgowarriors September 21, 2011 8:53 am

thanks for the updates. wat about the D?

  71. eagle September 21, 2011 8:56 am

    59, 65

Agree Moniz is Very Good to Great … (and it’s the coaches call anyway)

AND i have also shared the concern ’bout looking “slackadaisical”

(i KNOW he’s a hard worker and does his homework unlike any other…)

BUT i also think we lose that “quick” edge, AND the Variation/uncertainty edge, and the defense has too much time to check, re-check, adjust on too many plays (and they’ve sniffed out A LOT)…

…then after we’ve run down the clock too many times throughout the game … we say we lost because we ran out of time …

BL: i think our clock use and clock management could be better …

  72. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 8:58 am

I hope Billy Ray isn’t battling another injury…=(

It is nice to see some changes in personnel. Hopefully the new options work better.

A One-Team Big LEast would be good for a Death to the BCS Break-up

but it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve barely had one or less worthy team

just my opinion but the offense is not the big problem. Its the defense. Starting with coaches Miano and Arranda. The dline was supposed to be a strong point but so far they

have given up yards in bunches. The secondary, what can you say. Maybe its about time

that Miano steps down and give someone else the job of recruiting and teaching the DBs.

Coach Arranda goes to Bengals coaches clinics. When was the last time Cinci was a contender in the NFL. Coach Rolo should think about using a Boise State offense instead of

being a JJ follower. Just my opinion but the coaches make the calls and they recruit and chose the guys that are going to play. And so far they,ve made all the wrong choices.

    Kevin,

I understand your point and you are not wrong with your concerns. One thing that we should ponder is that Nike apparently didn’t value UH much even with success and we know that UA valued UH when it has historic-levels of success. I guess one of the points I was trying to make is that we don’t know for sure that UA will value UH much more than Nike if UH isn’t coming off a 12-0 regular season with national rankings and a Heisman candidate.

  81. Garret September 21, 2011 9:26 am

i think the minimum for a conference is actually six

    eagle,

The NCAA already waived that requirement for the WAC after UH decided to leave and their future was uncertain. The waiver is only good for 2 years…and after this season there are only 2 years left for the current BCS system.

  82. eagle September 21, 2011 9:28 am

    Masteruke

IS BOISE going to “HELP” Rolo make chages/adjustments, fixes and corrections ? [wake up]

Coach Paul Johnson (COY @ GA TECH) would say when you choose an offense you gotta know

How to Adjust (when the other TeamS throw you curves)

HOW to fix it when it’s broke

i DO think (yes i’ve talked to all of ’em) that Dave Aranda (like

Dick Tomey, Bob Wagner & McMackin) IS a Defensive Genius

AND Rich Miano didn’t survive 14-15 years in the NFL on Speed & Talent alone …

They’re Both WAY Smart AND Work WAY Hard …

That Combination Just About Always Wins …

    and Defense should be o.k.

MOST Years Offense should also be o.k. like, TOP TEN Nationally

but in years where we struggle finding a good experienced (fast progression) QB (after Rolo, After Colt) or have OL/ WR problems we’ll struggle for a while (most times NOT that long)

The Fastest Way to Lose is To Play The Other man’s Game …

    [Betcha Go to Vegas …]

  83. hossana September 21, 2011 9:28 am

Say what you will but the UH coaches have been outcoached in every aspect possible and, oh, yes, its the players that have to execute but its the coaches that have to prepare the players to execute and Coach Mack statement after the UW & UNLV game is that we can get the problems fixed or its fixable…oh, yeah, I can see him saying that after every game and loss and by the time season ends, geezus, what is he going to say, oh, we can get the problems fixed or its fixable for next year. All this B.S. about this being the best defense or one of the best defenses by the sports writers and Bobby Curran is all a product of local stupidity and provincialim…am i being too negative….think about it…i’m just conveying and giving a summary of all the people that were with us watching the game on t.v and there were approx. 20-25 of us watching this pathetic of a football team be an embarrasmment to Hawaii…not only that, UNLV is THE BOTTOM TEN in worse football teams until Hawaii which should be incl. in that category as already, Hawaii has the 115th out of 120 weak schedules….and all this B.S. about Hawaii being ranked if they had beaten UW or UNLV…stupid local yokels incl. the sports writer who have given Hawaii a vote and the public asking that Hawaii deserved to be ranked etc..if they had beaten the last two teams….IDIOTS!!

  84. Garret September 21, 2011 9:30 am

Too me practicing half speed with no pads and no hard hitting is only hurting this team remember this is not last years team time to step up and represent.

I agree with this point. On the other hand, all the injuries makes it really risky for the coaches to have the players go all-out with hitting in practice. Look at how banged up the OL and WR positions are already. When depth is thin, coaches often reduce hitting in practice.

In my opinion the injury situation makes things really hard for the coaches. Before this season UH had several years of good luck with injuries. This year the injuries seem to come at the places where UH can afford it the least.

This trickles down to everything on the field. For example, the receivers couldn’t practice with Moniz much in training camp since they were hurt. That seriously hurt the timing of passes, especially deep passes. That could lead to problems with deep passes, which leads to Moniz being criticized about his long passes. The lack of YAC may also be due to a lack of QB/WR timing (when the ball is delivered on time it is a lot easier to start running) and a lack of chemistry between the WRs which hurts the downfield blocking.

  85. eagle September 21, 2011 9:36 am

    Garret — Good Points

Wasn’t going into that much detail,

but note that a “waiver” is usually an exception to “the requirements” and as you noted usually temporary ?like the AQ for MWC in the BCS ?

  86. Garret September 21, 2011 9:53 am

    eagle,

Yes, the Big East or Big 12 would only keep AQ status temporarily, until the end of the current BCS contract, since there is no way to kick them out. If either conference gets raided significantly, I could easily see that conference losing AQ status under the new system that will start in 2014.

  87. Kevin September 21, 2011 9:58 am

    Garret,

All we have to go by is what already happened and in that seems like you answered your own question:

    Garret:

    September 21st, 2011 at 9:24 am

So… when a company that didn’t see much value in you is rumored to purchase the majority of stock in the company that did think you were worth something… I think I have just cause for concern.

Now, if the rumor comes true and the subsequent assumptions that UA will still operate with a big amount of “autonomy” (oh… there’s that word again!!!) then my concerns are moot.

So going by that, yes we cannot assume UA will extend our current deal beyond 2016 with the same terms as far as cash value and trade are concerned.

    But by saying:

I guess one of the points I was trying to make is that we don’t know for sure that UA will value UH much more than Nike if UH isn’t coming off a 12-0 regular season with national rankings and a Heisman candidate.

It seems to imply that you suggest there is a possiblity that Nike could value UH more without those accolades and in that, considering what has happened WITH our accomplishments, that shouldn’t even be considered a possibility.

  88. Kevin September 21, 2011 10:04 am

Addidas showed NO interest to UH as far as football is concerned, but Addidas sponsors men’s basketball at UH and has for a while.

And people won’t be too thrilled with Russell Athletic.

We live in the age of sudden change.

I am happy that Coach Mack and and company are firmly rooted in the spirit of the game as a developmental tool for young men of good character.

Those qualities will live as long as the people live… win, lose or tie.

  98. Kevin September 21, 2011 10:28 am

Variable change in inevitable, especially with corporations, I think we’ve all seen that.

But all I can go by is what has happened and what current business relationships are working that benefit UH and the student-athletes.

Until 2016, when the UA football deal expires, the relationships UH has formed with UA and continue to nurture will also play a big role in a renegotiation of similar or bigger terms.

Business is business, but an 8-year business relationship has it’s advantages over forming a new one with a shady past.

South: Hawaii, Fresno, Nevada, San Diego St, UNLV, BSU.

BACK TO SPORTS AND THE COMMENTATORS: As a former English teacher and editor, I really have difficulty reading some of the comments because the writers do not correct spelling, grammatical & usage errors before submitting their opinions & ideas. The ones that I wind up skipping over are those written by people who think that punctuation, capitalization, and using full names/words at least once before switching to abbreviations is a huge waste of time.

If you want your suggestions & comments to be read by the coaching staff and UH administrators at all four levels, then please pay attention to how you put your comments in writing.

Problem with that premise is that the two Oregon and Washington Schools still get to share in the BCS Bowl revenues and big TV monies. That’s way too much money to give up just for a chance to be in a bowl game.

Was on Alaska Airlines on Monday returning after the DEBACLE in Las Vegas. We had to fly to Bellingham, WA first, then fly back to Honolulu. When we re-boarded in Bellingham the person wearing a white with red stripes polo shirt with the Washington St. (WSU) logo was sitting in the first row in first class. Inquisiutive, as I entered the place, I said, WAZZU! He looked at me and I asked him if we was with the atheltics department at Wash. St. He said he’s an assistant football coach on a recruiting trip to the islands. I didn’t ask what position he coaches, but now I’m wondering if it was Chris Tormey who was at Hawaii last year. He has short hair, almost like crew cut, haole, and looked to be at least 6’2″. I asked him if Chester Sua from Hawaii is redshirting for WSU this year as a freshman, and he said NO he’s been playing. I told him good luck! Wonder who’s he’s targeting. So, the recruitiers are here constantly even during in season.

UCONN and Rutgers deny that they agreed to stay in the Big East…sounds like they are headed for the ACC. Why state that you aren’t pledged to stay unless you know you are out the door?

Multiple officials at Connecticut say the school has not committed to staying in the Big East Conference and continues to look at other conference options.

The officials, who asked that their names not be used because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations, denied that Connecticut and Rutgers agreed to stay in the conference during a three-hour meeting among Big East football members on Tuesday.

I think Bright and Sampson will split reps at LWO.

Stutzmann will play, but he’s resting a sore foot.

    Clapp will start.

Bell will play, but probably more as a RWO.

Harding is now the No. 2 LSB behind Stutzmann. He looks good. Makes catches. Fearless. Smart. I’d say mature, but then Harding is older than Jason.

Guava BBQ baby back ribs and garlic mash potatoes. Less than 19.00 for half a slab which is like a full rack anyway.

BCD get good deals on breakfast too.

Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your article seem to be running off the screen in Safari. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon. Kudos

    Harding should be fearless.

When you come from a country in which things with 4 or more legs can kill you, one tends to not fear those with just two legs.

  158. d1shima September 21, 2011 12:40 pm

    Kevin,

Wondered if Harding said at the beginning of camp, “I can use a helmet here? With a facemask?” 😆

    Garret: RE: # 28

The Warriors’ opponent this week, UC Davis, won’t be leaving Sacramento until Friday morning. After they arrive in Honolulu, they head to Pearl Harbor.

Wow, that gives minimal time to adjust to Hawaii time and minimal practice time at Aloha Stadium. Such is the life of a D-IAA school suffering from huge state budget cuts.

    Hawai’i, esp. under Price, Tomey & Wagner employed the “Commando Raid” technique of arriving late, never letting the jet lag kick in (utilizing the theory that it doesn’t affect most people for the first 24-36 hours);

from Hawai’i’s experience, although cheaper, i think it was never as good as giving the team 3-4 days to adapt…

BUT it is Way Better than “The Vegas Week” Approach [isn’t it amazing How Dumb things sound IN HINDSIGHT?)

The Commando Raid approach according to KGMB’s Chris Tanaka on this morning’s BC Show, is what the NFL uses — they can afford just about ANY Approach ….

    —–

i think most teams only get one (at the most two) walk-throughs/practices at the game stadium

    ——–

    Thanks D1

ISAAC — As D1 pointed out, Even under JJ, UH LOST TWICE to so called DI-AA schools @ HOME ! TWICE ! (Can’t say it often enough: Lesson NOT Learned!… and when we were DI-AA we beat D1 schools On-The Road even like U-DUMB (1973)

…and UC-DAVIS is better than the average FCS Team …including

1)BEATING San Jose last Year on the Road; AND

    2) 2009 @ Boise State 34, UC Davis 16; (Better than WE Did 7-42 & 9-54 L2Yrs) and

    3) Beating STANFORD Also On-The Road before that

… AND as i mentioned earlier Boise HC Peterson is from UC-DAVIS so you can Expect them to HAVE the How to Beat U.H. Book (from the only team/HC that really knows how it works)…

WE Would Struggle with ALL THAT !

ONE Thing WE SHOULD Learn from this past Week (as fans)

The Coaches Already Know — The Players have to Keep RE-Learning it …

Your Best Chance of Winning Starts with RESPECTING Your Opponent —

IT Helps You to show up in the Right Frame of Mine — To Perform @ Your Own Best

AND there’s ENOUGH Evidence that they CAN Beat U.H. (Like Bottom Tier UNLV, IF UH doesn’t show up ready to do its best — AGAIN…)

Fla. Atlantic isn’t an FCS team, why did u list them?

  163. eagle September 21, 2011 12:45 pm

BTW, i’m SURE UC-Davis already knows or believes they’re BETTER Than UNLV …

i Still think U.H. Will WIN … but that’s similar to most of us Last Week ….

[i’m doing this because i think the more Fans that understand How to Best Support U.H., the better our chances …]

If you’re interested or have questions, email me at curt_aloha at yahoo dot com. Zigga zagga, zigga zagga, hoy hoy hoy! 🙂

  168. Bowwar September 21, 2011 1:01 pm

The Cal-Davis game should be a watershed event for the Warriors…We’ll find out who “steps-up” and who don’t. Bottom-line, they need to make changes in personnel if people don’t produce. Give the opportunity to the players that “want to” make a difference versus those who “don’t show-up” when the lights are on…

  169. WTH? September 21, 2011 1:05 pm

    169,

You’re right, that was before they became FBS. But there shouldn’t be any relevance anyways, because I doubt anyone on the UH roster back in 2004 is still on it this year.

Just wondering, do you really think we’re going to lose at home to an FCS team?

I posted those scores in response; it has happened…

  179. RedZone September 21, 2011 1:37 pm

I just looked at the UCD roster and was amazed that all of their players are from California. I don’t know if I have ever seen a roster like that before.

  180. d1shima September 21, 2011 1:41 pm

    RedZone,

Yep, the “leftovers” from Cal, Stanford, UCLA and USC. There’s a lot of talent in CA and a lot of freeways to get to them.

UC-Davis has been playing quality football at whatever level they’ve been for years.

  181. Jack Flash September 21, 2011 1:42 pm

    Aloha Tsaikos,

The Warriors will NOT lose this next home game.

    Pomai-

    WARRIORS- 45, suc davis- 10.

The coaches will get things fixed. Especially with the receivers running the correct routes.

  182. d1shima September 21, 2011 1:48 pm

    Welcome home, Kekoa!

I think that accounts for erryboddy! 😉

  183. RedZone September 21, 2011 1:50 pm

UCD has some big boys on their oline.

  184. 1sportsfan September 21, 2011 1:59 pm

    Adding to the comments:

Defense was supposed to be the strength of the team. Miano called his DBs the best in a decade, smart. We had d-tackles that could move the pocket. We have the same d-line that put up a stirring goalline stand at Fresno (?) last year. They have played with flashes of meeting expectations but have problems with giving up the big play. Too many is the problem.

Big problems on special teams. I think McMackin should be angry with Tomey. Any interviews with Tomey on what he thinks? How do you get two PATs blocked, in the same game?!

Moniz is a proven R&S quarterback but if he’s spending too much time looking for where his receivers are, then not so good with a weak O-line. Remember, he has to look for his receivers and avoid a sack. Weak meaning unproven to provide sustained protection (3.5 seconds?) and inexperienced.

Warriors should win against UC Davis but most fans probably fear an ugly win.

  185. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 2:01 pm

So I finally listened to the replay of CTC show and heard the part where Mack ripped one of the callers. Pretty funny stuff.

    Both have good points imo.

    – NEVER take any team for granted. Div 1 teams have lost to Div 1aa.

    – Giving your opponent extra confidence by saying “they are big time and to be feared” isn’t the best thing.

  186. COCOBEAN September 21, 2011 2:05 pm

Damn Laura, I hate it when I have to agree with you. Clapp is almost a given because of Miah’s injury. I’d like to see what Harding can do. He exudes the “want to” in making things happen. I stated before if given a fair chance he’d lead the team in yac. But the reality is if Stuitz can go, practice or not, he’ll start.

  187. d1shima September 21, 2011 2:07 pm

Plan on the meal of your life for Thursday night.

Experts say Friday remains the most likely day that the NASA research satellite will come crashing down through the atmosphere.

NASA is anticipating a splashdown rather than a landing. Nearly three-quarters of the world is covered with water.

Otherwise read as a 1 in 4 chance that it hits land! 😯

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/130311438.html

  198. Nate Fletcher September 21, 2011 2:34 pm

The slots are taking too long to get into the passing lanes…they need to run inside slants at the line of scrimmage and immediately look for moniz. Rolo should show video of Chad Owens, how he used to pause a second at the line then run under the lb’s and catch passes over the middle in stride and end up turning 3 yd catches into 8 yd gains. Play smarter and be quick. Take too long and you give up sacks. A quick release is useless if no one is looking for the ball.

Don’t take UC Davis too lightly remember Portland State 9/09/2000 lost by 20-45 and

Florida Atlantic on 9/04/2004 lost in OT 28-35.

  216. rich2176 September 21, 2011 3:05 pm

Biggest problems I’ve noticed on offense this year:

    Mis-managed time outs;

    Inconsistent snaps from center which takes away precious time in the pocket; which leads to receivers “over-running” their routes;

    Too many dropped “catchable” passes;

    Not enough YAC.

Too many turnovers. BTW, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team miss 4 PAT’s in two games. (2 blocks and 2 missed 2 pt tries)

THE WARRIORS HAVE BEATEN THEMSELVES TWICE THIS YEAR. THEY WILL TURN IT AROUND!!

    Rich2176 #225 Inconsistent snaps from center which takes away precious time in the pocket; which leads to receivers “over-running” their routes;

    Re-Jason Kaneshiro

I read his article yesterday on former Warrior OC, Ron Lee, who is now coaching at Kalani.

Kaneshiro did a super, super job. He wrote an article that was insightfull and befitting of what you might see in a Sports Illustrated magazine. It was that good.

If the SA was smart they should allow Kaneshiro to spread his wings more.

If I had a say, I would suggest the SA move Kaneshiro into the Warrior beat writer’s/blog host’s position.

The public needs more than what they are getting now.

Caught one fish today. Almost two, but the second one nibbled and got away. Still tried to take the bait though.

  241. madeinhawaii September 21, 2011 4:18 pm

Okay.. so following the lead of Jaws… we just “stay out of the water”… especially if the sky lights up some.

  242. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 4:19 pm

    Mikey

The UC Davis release said webcast is not available.

  243. LizKauai September 21, 2011 4:20 pm

mikey, I doubt ESPN3 will be blacked out in CA…

Fishing, eh? the 6th F

  244. LizKauai September 21, 2011 4:21 pm

mikey… unless, of course, UC Davis blacks it out… which doesn’t make sense… but, oh well…

  245. LizKauai September 21, 2011 4:22 pm

    HI ST! Any pictures?

  246. LizKauai September 21, 2011 4:23 pm

Blessings and condolences to the family of the zipline installer… that hits home. Went ziplining in Costa Rica…

  247. wafan September 21, 2011 4:25 pm

    Good evening!

  248. wafan September 21, 2011 4:25 pm

Could not go ziplining . . . unless they reinforced the trees, line, gear, . . .

  249. wafan September 21, 2011 4:29 pm

    Pride. . . .

Met your little brother at the LV cc. Super nice guy! Must run in the genes.

When he said you told him to find me I thought (1) it was good thing we were in a crowded area, and (2) make sure others are around — all the time.

Then he showed me your text listing a bunch of other Tsai-kos. Figured they were good people so I must be safe too.

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Hope you are as proud of him as he is of you!!!

  250. wafan September 21, 2011 4:31 pm

    Change is good.

Just need to find the right balance and connection to make the team hum along at their usual pace.

  251. al September 21, 2011 4:31 pm

i thought felipe was on the sideline for 1420 radio broadcast and that lori santi was working the sidelines for oc16.

  252. al September 21, 2011 4:32 pm

i guess i’m easier than pride. just serve me some lunch. you know.

  253. LizKauai September 21, 2011 4:32 pm

Ditto what wafan said. Pride. – It was a treat to meet your brother and have some good Tsai-ko time with him!

  254. wafan September 21, 2011 4:33 pm

Finding it difficult to understand why folks are quick to call for heads to roll.

If you are that much better apply for the job. Otherwise, it is just a lot of hot air from some anonymous person.

  255. Last Call September 21, 2011 4:36 pm

Hawai`i games played at home on ESPN 3 have always been blacked out. I assume it has something top do with PPV .

ESPN 3 is available to Internet Service Providers but not all carry it. In Hawai`i folks with Hawaiian Tel DSL get it ,I’m not sure about Road Runner.

For fans on the mainland simply click on any game in progress and if your ISP dosen’t carry it the screen will tell you.

  256. al September 21, 2011 4:37 pm

wafan…i hear you. especially when they haven’t played or coached.

  257. wafan September 21, 2011 4:38 pm

Looks like all non-LV Tsai-kos made it home safely.

Good thing, too! Otherwise we would be forced to send search parties, or is that parties searching, for those lost Tsai-kos.

  258. bigislandkurt September 21, 2011 4:39 pm

Nate Ilaoa — That new job must really be something because I think you just passed on a chance of a lifetime.

    BIK

  259. wafan September 21, 2011 4:41 pm

Okay, next summer. Lunch. My treat.

    Sure hope you are inexpensive!

  263. wafan September 21, 2011 4:45 pm

BTW, just received the M’s October mailer. 25% off rooms October through December!

Dunno what the regular price of their rooms are but I did find out how much their king-bed suite is per night.

    Dang!

  264. wafan September 21, 2011 4:46 pm

That kind of time spent is well worth the price!

  282. Slugger September 21, 2011 5:24 pm

Happy birthday to Aaron, Ronnie’s wonderful son!

Just tried making jmxxxx’s BP… not quite the same. Have to try, try again. 😀

All the best to Nate in his new job!

Wonder how practice went today? Saw a player & a coach walking in the neighborhood at lunchawah. (Sorry, D1, don’t know how to speo dat like you.)

  283. Kevin September 21, 2011 5:39 pm

    hawnstln,

Im not from Kauai, but if you wanna make a drive to Lihue get JJ’S BROILER.

  284. d1shima September 21, 2011 5:40 pm

    Slugger,

Nothing against jmxxxx’s BP but the one at Golden Nugget is crazy good!

….and then you add the Bourbon Sauce! 😀

  285. Slugger September 21, 2011 5:48 pm

    d1shima,

You’ll have to describe that BP to us. Not making Bourbon Sauce. 😀 The stuff I have in the pantry is too old, only for cooking. Might make Sangria, though…

Are you in the PNW this weekend? GO WILDCATS!

  286. hawnstln September 21, 2011 5:58 pm

  290. postmanke September 21, 2011 6:16 pm

    Warriors 52-17 – thanks Pomai!

    D-Bright practiced today?

Would be nice to see +230 yards rushing next week… Hammer time!

  291. A-House September 21, 2011 6:43 pm

    Coach Rolo:

for your cosnideration – put all 4 receivers on the same side of the field close to the Oline – have a receiver shift over to the “tightend” position; OT takes one small step backwards making him an eligible receiver; then QB can pass to the WR shift or fake a pass to that side and pass option to the OT. reminder: tell the referee you got a trick play coming up. gottsa make/keep the defense honest.

if QB is going to throw to a 3 receiver set – havens, put them closer to the Oline so the ball will get to the receiver quicker; not 20 yards to the sideline.

why is “up the middle” so important? pros do it! running schools do it! SO WHAT?????

hey, what do I know! – never played high school or college ball – just a student of the game.

  292. A-House September 21, 2011 6:44 pm

    Happy Birfday to Aaron!!

    Thanks for visiting.

Wish you the best, and hope you can find happiness at some other site.

Re: Football discussed on this blog.

Many opine with terrific insight on the subject. Some with a keen understanding from personal involvement, like the Blog Host.

However…most of the Tsaiko’s save their best fb analysis for face time discussions at tailgates or cc’s. That< is what makes this blog so unique.

He recently was hired as marketing representative for a medical facility that performs MRIs and PET/CT scans. The job requires a lot of meetings with doctors, medical center officials, etc. He figured he couldn’t put in enough time to do the TV job justice. It was a tough decision, he said.

    I like cigarettes.

  304. Ralph September 21, 2011 7:44 pm

WVB tomorrow at 4 p.m. HST, I assume ESPN 1420, live stats on UH site. Idaho is 0-16 all time against UH. Ouch! First home game for Idaho, first road game for UH, whoever made the Idaho schedule didn’t do the home team any favors, and we complain of playing two road games in the row. 🙂 Idaho played 12 matches in the row on the road.

  305. Ralph September 21, 2011 7:45 pm

    Correct (as always).

More on the UA/Nike rumor front.

    http://www.investorguide.com/article/9588/nike-nke-rumored-to-consider-acquiring-under-armour-ua/

Nike defied bears last quarter by trouncing all earnings expectations, and shares have also since rallied and survived the August crash. However, lingering doubts remain regarding Nike’s dominant position, growth potential and market saturation. An acquisition of a fresh name like Under Armour, which is already available in 20,000 retail locations, would boost its position considerably through horizontal integration.

An acquisition of Under Armour would create new synergies which would save Nike capital by combining manufacturing facilities. In addition, Under Armour would complement Nike’s current line of subsidiaries, which include Converse, Hurley, Umbro and Cole Haan. It has been reported that Nike may offer $100 per share for Under Armour, an acquisition premium of 27%. However, Nike shareholders might wonder if the company might get a better deal down the road. After all, with such a high P/E any negative volatility is likely to bring the price down considerably, saving Nike hundreds of millions. It may be prudent for the company to wait on a better price before it pays such a high premium.

In addition, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank owns over 24% of outstanding voting shares, and his brother owns 5%. Based on Plank’s past comments and future vision for the company, it seems unlikely that he would cash out and sell his company to Nike, even at $100 per share. Under Armour also recently announced that it would double the size of its Baltimore headquarters, which suggests that the company is actually gunning for Nike, not preparing to be acquired by them.

Either way, Under Armour is still a fast-moving growth stock which has legs to run, and can even sprout wings if it successfully brings it business to emerging markets.

al-san – bp and triple choc cake are on the t-gate menu Saturday. Be sure to grace us with your presence.

There might also be some choc chip cookies to sneak into the stadium for snacks. (I didn’t say that 😀 )

  331. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 9:28 pm

    ST,

Ahh ic. Now I have always wondered about the food in the press box. I know its free…at least I think I know its free. But what kind of food is it? Catered? Or is it just a bunch of stuff that they sell in the stadium?

My binoculars aren’t strong enough to see what you guys are eating. Not that I am looking though..lol

  336. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 9:37 pm

I think Jason Kaneshiro is a great writer and even greater person.

But in multiple posts, somebody expressed unhappiness with coming to this blog. So, I figured, if somebody doesn’t want to be here, but can’t seem to leave, we’ll just help him in his pursuit of happiness.

We all wish him the best in whatever site he chooses to visit in the future.

Like most normal people, I wouldn’t do something over and over again that I don’t enjoy…Especially when I have full freedom and choice not to do it.

Sometimes when we refuse to choose, someone will choose for us…Good lesson learned tonight. A broken record can only go round and round for so long until someone sick and tired of it will pull the plug.

    The End.

  339. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 9:48 pm

    Again, no hard feelings.

And we wish him the best wherever else he chooses to go.

Trust me, I’ve read though all of the complaints relayed to me, either through e-mails or readers wanting to know what’s up with that person, and I was letting them go. But when somebody repeatedly indicates how much he doesn’t like coming here, well, hey, we’re just fulfilling his wishes.

Anyway, I’m not dealing with this anymore.

Again, if people don’t want to be here, we’ll make sure they get their wish.

    Thanks again.

I’m tired so I’m gonna try to sum it up.

Basically the Hawaii ranks 74 out of 120 in terms off the 210 television media markets…. errr, not my words:

Surveys find that about one-quarter of the United States population, or between 75 and 80 million people, follow college football regularly. But which teams do they align themselves with?

This question is not easy to answer, but we’re going to make an effort to resolve it, and then use the results to shine a light on college football’s increasingly complicated realignment picture.

The premise of the study is this: take the 210 television media markets in the United States, figure out how many college football fans they have, and then allocate them between the 120 current Football Bowl Subdivision programs.

So, according to this, these are some schools that rank lower than Hawaii (I’m highlighting teams of note):

-Wake Forest, BAYLOR, Washington State, Army, Navy, Houston, Tulane, UTEP, SMU, Rice, Marshall, Memphis, UAB, Air Force, North Texas, and of course there is the rest of the current WAC and the bottom sect of the MWC.

I dunno why I capitalized Baylor.

    Im tired.

Met your little brother at the LV cc. Super nice guy! Must run in the genes.

Hope you are as proud of him as he is of you!!!

Yes Wafan, I’m very proud of him. Served twenty years in the military and now working for the VA office.

I sometimes wonder if my parents brought home the wrong kid. My brother takes vacations to run marathons in different parts of the country. What a waste of precious vacation time.

Hey, we all tried for a long time. But this was a relationship that wasn’t working out.

    Time to stop wasting time.

So I saw ST come and sit down at our table at the Na Koa Luncheon…Then I realized there was a imposing figure sitting behind me…Didn’t expect to see RK there. For the longest time I thought he brought in his own sippy cup. I thought that was interesting…then come to find out it wasn’t really a sippy cup.

  378. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2011 11:50 pm

yeah mcdonalds is not a good place to go if you have blood pressure issues.

if you must indulge you are better off going to some place like kua aina, burgers on the edge, honolulu burger company, etc where the food while still fatty will probably have a lot less salt/preservatives. you can also have it ordered the way you want.

  379. Stephen Tsai September 21, 2011 11:52 pm

I am not YET confident that UH will win ANY games remaining on their schedule, even against an FCS school. I was there for the ASU-UCD game played here, and even though they were blown out and scored their two TDs when the reserves were in, ASU has a much better offense/defense than what UH has shown so far. On any Saturday, even the underdogs will score a “W”…just look at the past three weeks results.

Thanks for the suggestions you have contributed here. On top of that, I believe there are numerous factors which really keep your auto insurance premium all the way down. One is, to consider buying vehicles that are in the good set of car insurance corporations. Cars which might be expensive tend to be at risk of being lost. Aside from that insurance policies are also based on the value of your vehicle, so the higher in price it is, then the higher the premium you pay.
