Walking the walk

In what is believed to be the first time since 2007, a visiting college football team will conduct a practice on the Manoa campus.

Because of its tight schedule and the unavailability of Aloha Stadium this afternoon, the UC Davis football team is set to have its walk-through at the Ching complex this evening. After arriving today, the Aggies will visit Pearl Harbor, check into a hotel, then prepare for the walk-through.

The Warriors’ walk-through will be this afternoon, also at Ching, where it has practiced all week because it is a better setting to video practices. UH has not practiced on a grass field since the season began.

Is there still any talk at all ongoing about the “next phase” of the Ching Field project?

A downtown venue that could accommodate a HS football Friday tripleheader would prevent this kind of predicament.

  9. TChahng September 23, 2011 6:49 am

    There oughta be a law…

  14. papajoe2 September 23, 2011 7:02 am

Arrived from Vegas yesterday. Took so long to check emails, catch up on the blog, pay bills, etc.. Good to be back. Met a lot of mainland tsaikos, including Rasu, Rich, Brew, Garret and others before the game. Also, some regular Tsaikos who are from here like Kekoa and SteveM, and of course others. Catching up on the blog was depressing. It reminded me of how terrible the Warriors played, but answered some questions that I had, such as how many turnovers did the Warriors have. Seemed to me the WRs, besides the Oline, was not into the game also. If the ball didn’t come to them, they just quit. Didn’t make a good attempt at blocking, running wrong routes, gave up on some passes. Ah, enough already. I could go on and on but onward to Saturday’s game. I hope we rebound nicely, but not really slaughter them or we will get big headed.

  15. jm2375 September 23, 2011 7:19 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    Happy Aloha Friday!!

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WAHINE!!

  16. letsgowarriors September 23, 2011 7:23 am

    whos starting at FS?

  17. Garret September 23, 2011 7:24 am

I wish that I could have socialized more in Vegas…but I was feeling so drained from getting over my cold that I figured that I had to conserve my energy and limit how much I moved around. It was great to get to talk with everyone I got a chance to talk with–maybe 20 or 30 Tsaikos.

99club is great to watch a football game with–I look forward to the next time.

Thank you to the A-House family for their kindness and generosity.

Thank you again to Rich and Rasu Begasu for their hard work that made everything possible.

It was nice to be able to catch up with SteveM, I think that was the most I’ve gotten to talk with him at one time since I think we never sat next to each other at a Cattle Call. It was funny to see SteveM and hwnstln talk about some old high school stuff at halftime.

I could list another 10 or 20 people off the top of my head, but then I’m sure I’d leave someone out so I’ll stop now.

Hopefully we’ll have a great Tsaiko event when UH comes to San Diego to play SDSU. That should get a great turnout. We have the SoCal chapter (nice to see Ronnie and l_oku in Vegas) and San Diego is easy to get to (and has a variety of casinos not too far away).

  18. Garret September 23, 2011 7:25 am

If I remember correctly, 2007 was when BSU practiced at UH to prepare for the Hawaii Bowl.

  19. RedZone September 23, 2011 7:31 am

2 teams same field. Might as well scrimmage.

  22. Garret September 23, 2011 7:35 am

I’m not putting a guess in for the game on Saturday, but I think that UH will win by at least 3 TDs. This is a great time for UH to have a D-IAA opponent and get things in sync for the start of WAC play.

  23. tom mui September 23, 2011 7:49 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

whoa ralphie…trow me off you bugga.

it was wie and kerr that paired to get that opening round win.

…and not “wee(sp) and creamer”. after all those two are nearly mortal enemies.

  25. Don Weir September 23, 2011 8:00 am

    Garret,

I am flying to the mainland for the SDSU game in 2012. I am thinking that I call in a few favors and we set up some Italian food in Little Italy at a place that can handle a larger crowd. Perhaps it is time to bring together Tsaiko’s and guests and former players. It worked well in Seattle and Las Vegas several years ago when we made the effort and coordinated the evening. I will approach ESPN 1420 and see if they want to do a broadcast the Friday night before the game.

Anyone up for making it a fundraiser for the Na Koa Endowment??

I fly out on Monday and will be at the Columbus Day Festival in front of the Busalacchi’s restaurant called Cafe Zucchero working with the family at the food tent. Stop by if you have a chance

    I will be in touch.

  26. mikey September 23, 2011 8:08 am

Don, I would like to meet up you guys for SDSU game too in 2012. Don’t know how but I have it tentively set up the game on Nov. 17th or 24th at Qualcomm Stadium, whould be nice.

  27. Hilo-Warrior September 23, 2011 8:10 am

I am not one to believe in easy wins. But I honestly believe that after our last two losses that our warriors put in some extra hard work this last week. Because of the extra work and focus we will come out firing tomorrow.

So with that Hawaii 59 – UCD 10

  28. mikey September 23, 2011 8:10 am

We always look for Mexican food when ever we go to San Deigo. We don’t have enough Mex Restaurant here in Hawaii.

  29. Derek September 23, 2011 8:13 am

It’s a little weird having the opponent practice on our own field the day before the game. I guess St. Louis or Roosevelt was unavailable right?

  30. Slugger September 23, 2011 8:13 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Go USA!

Not a consumer of alcohol but a beer tour of San Diego might be of interest to some. Stone will have a convenient location in Point Loma (the brewery is in Escondido)…

  40. mikey September 23, 2011 8:27 am

Pomai: the best of the best Mexican restaurant here in Hawaii close a while back.

We stood in long line on that last sad day when La Bamba close. Haven’t had any close to match that here in Hawaii. But in San Deigo there are whole slew of them in a roll.

Can’t wait San Diego here we (Warriors!) come.

  41. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 8:28 am

    Pomai,

    Azteca’s in Kaimuki.

    Bar none, the best.

  42. Kevin September 23, 2011 8:31 am

    Pomai,

Shoot, I don’t know why I didn’t tell you this yesterday, BUT in Aiea, next to Aiea Bowl there is a good Mexican place.

    Called El Charro 488-9727.

Kind of a small place, got some seats and tables, but more enjoyable to take and go home.

Quality of the ingredients down to the tortilla is noticable compared to other places like Banditos or Cholos.

  43. mikey September 23, 2011 8:31 am

Interesting to see a 4 win for UC Davis and a tie on Pomai Hot List.

I sure hope the Offense can pick it up. May need to move my score up a notch.

    Warriors 31 – UC Davis 21

  46. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 8:35 am

Missouri has passed on the offer to join the SEC. How Texas keeps pulling miracles out of their *** is beyond me. How many lives does the Big 12 have? lol

    http://www.nola.com/bcs/index.ssf/2011/09/missouri_off_the_table_for_sec.html

Horrible news for the Big LEast as West Virginia is now the SEC’s prime target. The SAME school that WANTED to get into the SEC but was denied last week as the SEC wanted Mizzou first.

TCU has become the frontrunner for the Big 12

UCONN will be invited to the ACC within the next couple of weeks according to NBC-Sports.

The Big LEast is so screwed. LOL!

  47. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 8:37 am

    Kevin,

    Sure, can tess ‘um haha.

  48. papajoe2 September 23, 2011 8:37 am

    Pomai, UH 24, David 17.

  49. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 8:39 am

    Pomai,

The two in Kaneohe are supposed to be among the best the island has to offer. El Mariachi

45-1151 Kamehameha Hwy # B, Kaneohe, HI 96744-3211 and another one just a block down Kahuhipa, which is a street running perpendicular to Kam Hwy where El Mariachi is.

  50. Kevin September 23, 2011 8:40 am

    iwwthm,

Well, honestly, can’t test them both in one day. Would be fast asleep after either one of them.

Mexican food puts me down QUICK.

  51. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 8:41 am

I’ve eaten at the one on Kahuhipa… atmosphere is very simple but the food was good. Price was fair.

  52. mikey September 23, 2011 8:42 am

I’m crossing my fingers, where there’s demise in Big East and Big 12, it somehow always follows to Far Far West to Hawaii. And we end up getting the shaft.

  53. Pomai September 23, 2011 8:43 am

mikey thanks, I have had Mexican food all over the country and can you believe the best I have had was in West Virginia a place called the “Rio Grande” of course it was owned by a guy from Mexico, but I think he must have been to Hawaii once because he served TSAIKO size portions like on a 12″ plate, dang making my mouth water……….

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid September 23, 2011 8:48 am

Torito’s in Market City in Kapahulu, by Fun Factory li’ dat. Local Hispanics swear by it.

  55. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 8:50 am

*On Navy to Big East and Army saying Nah, Not Interested”

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7005807/navy-midshipmen-interested-big-east-not-hot-pursuit-membership

FUNNY…So Navy thinks they must get into a conference sooner rather than later because independence is a tough road in the future.

Yet Army isn’t really biting at the Big East talks or the hysteria of “mega-conferences” etc. They seem to be comfortable with independence. Very smart imo.

Now that’s what I call “Army Strong”.

    ——

“We’re not in any need or rush to do anything. We’re just concentrating on who we are and making sure we can get our program as healthy as we can…” said Boo Corrigan, Army’s AD.

“UConn is still looking at a move to the ACC, and Rutgers reportedly has gauged interest with the Big Ten and ACC.”

“Though Marinatto said the schools pledged to stay in the league after representatives from all seven remaining football schools met Tuesday night, UConn and West Virginia put out statements that did not mention a future commitment to the Big East.”

  56. mikey September 23, 2011 8:50 am

Yes Pomai I miss those Big 12″ plates and there are many in Southern California.

And up North you can find them in San Francisco, Mission District.

Thanks for many Mexican listing here in Hawaii, there kinda far for my travel but will try them soon. Dang making my mouth water too……

  57. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 8:57 am

    #52

    mikey,

The difference in this kind of the demise is it’s the fun kine of demise. The Big LEast isn’t in a position to just grab any ole team it wants at this point in terms of Football. You are seeing GREED killing GREED. A true death of a conference.

    Current FB membership is

    WV

    Pitt

    Louisville

    Rutgers

    S. Florida

    Syracuse

    UCONN

    Cinccy

Pitt and Syracuse are gone, period. WV is SEC’s target (the same conference WV wanted to get into last week but was denied in favor of Mizzou), UCONN is speculated to get a ACC invite.

Assuming Rutgers doesn’t follow suit, you have FOUR members left, maybe even THREE.

I doubt any school is willing to make a move to such a conference that won’t mean a hill off beans in a few years. It’s going to take divine intervention to save that ship.

Hawaii will be fine. No worries beef curries.

  58. Kekoa September 23, 2011 9:02 am

    Aloha Friday Tsai-ko’s!

    •Small kine reminder…Beat UCD!

•Big kine reminder…please bring gently used old childrens books, puzzels or board games to the Tailgate tomorrow.

There are several homeless family shelters on island we can re-distribute to for the children’s use.

  59. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:05 am

    re: #55 and #57,

Just one more thing. If ACC takes Syracuse, UCONN, PITT then Rutgers is a NATURAL fit and a money choice IMO.

You will have encapsulated the ENTIRE Tri-State New York Metropolitan area (NY-NJ-CT-PA) and them some.

This is the most populous metropolitan area in the nation at 19,000,000 people.

If TV is driving this…Rutgers gets the invite if they ask the ACC.

Another nail in the Big LEast coffin. Yea I am feeling bitter this morning.

  60. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 9:08 am

12″ plates, das what they serve on at the Kahuhipa place… found it!

    Maria Bonita

    46-138 Kahuhipa St

    Ste A

    Kaneohe, HI 96744

  61. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:08 am

    Kevin,

We could at least try no? I mean the worst that happens is we gotta take a few Tums or Rolaids.

  62. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:09 am

    #60,

They serve food on 13″ plates at Azteca’s.

  63. (Jesse) James September 23, 2011 9:13 am

Good morning Tsaikos…Hope all is well.

POMAI!!!! Mexico restaurant on School Street near Houghtailing. Parking is tight but food is pretty good.

  64. mikey September 23, 2011 9:15 am

Like the former Oregon President david Frohnmayer says “It’s a little like musical chairs,”

“You don’t want to be the last person left standing at the end” When music stops.

We all know here in Far far away land, We’ve been there before.

I am worried. More than upcoming game vs. UC Davis.

  65. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:17 am

Artie Wilson thinks we “have a chance” against UC-Davis tomorrow.

    That’s kind of unsettling.

  66. d1shima September 23, 2011 9:18 am

    Geez

  67. Kevin September 23, 2011 9:20 am

    D1,

Did that thing fall to earth yet?

  68. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:21 am

    #64,

The difference is the Big LEast is playing musical chairs on the Titanic while Hawaii and the MWC is on a nice little dinky (but sea worthy) sailboat watching the hysteria and drinking our 40’s.

The Big LEast dying does not hurt Hawaii.

If the 4 Big 12 schools were to leave and they raided the MWC and CUSA then at WORST the MWC would have to back fill with WAC schools. But that is NOT going to happen now that Big-12 has survived.

Sit back, open up a cold one, pop some popcorn because this is going to be fun to watch Mikey.

  69. Da Punchbowl Kid September 23, 2011 9:21 am

    “Cautiously Optimistic?”

  70. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:22 am

    Kevin,

No it did not. And now they don’t know when/where it will fall. They are scrambling to figure it out.

    Sounds familiar…

  71. d1shima September 23, 2011 9:23 am

    Kevin,

    That thing is still around…

  72. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:23 am

    #69,

Again, its fine to be cautious but you don’t want the other guy to get so pumped up into thinking they are more than what they are. It cuts both ways.

  73. Kevin September 23, 2011 9:24 am

    iwwthm,

Unacceptable. Is NASA being run like a state institution????????????

  74. mikey September 23, 2011 9:24 am

Don’t know how true but Nola.com quotes:

“The most logical 14th member would be West Virginia, although the SEC reportedly rejected the school’s overtures last week.”

“Slive has already indicated the SEC is not interested in schools from states already in the conference’s footprint, which would eliminate schools such as Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech and Clemson, plus Big East member Louisville.”

Any movement by the upper echelons trickle downs to lower ‘US Conference’ who gets raided.

We here in Hawaii are always the last to find out.

  75. d1shima September 23, 2011 9:25 am

The 6 1/2-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) was expected to fall to Earth sometime this afternoon (Sept. 23), but changes in the school bus-size satellite’s motion may push it to early Saturday, according to NASA’s latest observations of the spacecraft.

    http://www.space.com/13062-falling-nasa-satellite-reentry-united-states.html

  76. Kevin September 23, 2011 9:25 am

    Iwwthm,

Another school of thought, is that some coaches don’t want a sense of over-confidence for their team in case the opponent catches wind of it and takes exception thus adding fuel to their fire.

  77. mikey September 23, 2011 9:30 am

#65 iwwthm: Thanks, I had a good laugh for the day.

I had to read it again.

  78. mikey September 23, 2011 9:31 am

meeting – loggin off have a great Friday!

  79. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 9:35 am

Big difference in this game is that our Warriors have been able to sleep in their own beds with their own pillows… Hopefully they will be game ready on Saturday.. bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and ready for aggie burgers!

  81. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 9:48 am

Maybe Warriors should have their 3rd string Olinemen dressed and ready to play .. if the Aggie rush isn’t all that strong, then our 1st and 2nd injured can sit it out… At least that’s what I’m hoping for.. another week of rest for our injured.

  82. SteveM September 23, 2011 10:03 am

    Good morning everyone!

Wow, talk of Tsaiko-SanDiego #1 forming already. Great!

Hmmm, I wonder what Mexico Riveria cruises are sailing out of SDO the day after the game? 🙄

    RE: #17

Garret — I was thinking the same thing about you. Was nice to sit with you too…a little dangerous maybe as you engage the UNLV fans…but I had spare glasses packed. BTW, everything hawnstln said about high school is not true. No way. Wasn’t me. But next LoCal Calf Call, ask him about how Al fit into all this back then. 🙂

Also, I think you and hawnstln are in charge of organizing any Tsai-ko blog cruise out of California.

  83. Garret September 23, 2011 10:04 am

    Don Weir,

That would be awesome! Having the gathering be a fundraiser for the Na Koa Endowment would be a great idea.

My only concern is that the Tsaikos normally have their pre-game gathering at a buffet for probably a lot less than what the fundraiser would cost. We could do both events of course, kind of like in Vegas where the big UH event is on Friday night and the Tsaikos gather on Saturday before the game.

  84. Garret September 23, 2011 10:07 am

    SteveM,

I thought it was fascinating to see the UNLV fans start the game just hoping not to lose yards on each play on offense. They were actually happy when their team went 3-and-out to start the game because they didn’t turn the ball over and gained something like a total of 3 yards on the 3 plays.

When they got the fumbled punt, those fans were more shocked than UH fans. When their team got up they were as gracious as I’ve even seen home fans be. Watching Southwest Conference games in the 80s was a completely different experience…the UNLV fans were actually cordial and refrained from using any profanity.

  85. Garret September 23, 2011 10:08 am

New Mexico is getting *5.5 points* at *home* against D-IAA Sam Houston State. It is amazing to me that a future UH conference member is a 5.5 point underdog at home to a team that isn’t even one of the better D-IAA schools.

  87. Garret September 23, 2011 10:10 am

According to this, UH is a 30-point favorite over UC-Davis. That seems about right to me.

  88. Garret September 23, 2011 10:11 am

    SteveM,

Once the UH-SDSU game date is announced, I’ll look up the cruises that are leaving around that date and post some options here.

  89. Garret September 23, 2011 10:17 am

It sounds like Texas will pledge itself to the Big 12…no team that makes this agreement will be able to leave the conference for 6 years since they will not own their TV rights if they leave.

But when a school turns over its rights to a conference the way the nine remaining schools in the Big 12 have verbally agreed to do, that conference controls a school’s television rights at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 level, even if a school was to leave the Big 12.

In other words, if Texas joined the Pac-12 or any other conference over the next six years, the Big 12 would still control the rights to air Texas games, even in the other conference.

My take: This is the show of solidarity that the rest of the conference was waiting for to ensure an iron-clad commitment to hold the conference together. In the past, schools have agreed to certain forms of revenue sharing at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 level but have never turned over their rights to the conference.

Yes! Good Mexican food for takeout.

One good point about why the Big East wants to add the service academies…it could guarantee that they keep AQ status past 2013.

Let’s assume that the Big East has added all 3 service academies as football-only members. Considering all of the constant political scrutiny with respect to the BCS, if you were a BCS commissioner, would you feel very comfortable going into a Congressional hearing and trying to explain why you just screwed over a league that has Navy, Air Force and Army? I certainly wouldn’t want to be in that position. See where I’m going here? Adding all of the service academies would provide a ton of political protection for the Big East when its AQ status is reviewed in 2013. That’s worth more than any other expansion candidates the Big East could possibly consider. The other BCS leagues are likely going to end up continuing granting the Big East an AQ auto-bid as the cost of doing business to keep massive political heat of them.

    Liz,

It was also great to watch a game with you again–the first time I did so since the Sugar Bowl. You are one of the most positive people that I’ve met and it is great to be around people with such faith in the team.

  96. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 10:44 am

If that’s the case, it sounds to me like the MWC and CUSA should also actively vie for the service academies… then make it all 6 team pods… then try to renegotiate a better TV deal

  97. Garret September 23, 2011 10:45 am

For those that think that has been greedy about Big 12 revenue sharing, it should be noted that Texas doesn’t get to earn as much as they could for their 3rd tier TV rights before ESPN/Fox put them on national TV so much. The other conference members get their TV money cut and get to sell their TV rights for all the games not picked. Before the Longhorn Network, Texas would have 1 game per year to sell and they would put that on PPV that was only available in some areas.

From the USA Today database, here is what the Big 12 teams made from their 3rd tier TV rights since 2004:

    Kansas – $32.5 million

    Nebraska – $25.3 million

    Oklahoma State – $17.2 million

    Kansas State – $15.2 million

    Iowa State – $12 million

    Texas – $968,000

If you add in the conference TV money (which gives Oklahoma the most, Texas the second most, etc.), here is the breakdown since 2004:

    1. Kansas – $91.4 million

    2. Nebraska – $82.2 million

    3. Oklahoma – $79.7 million

    4. Texas – $76.2 million

    5. Oklahoma State – $74.9 million

    6. Mizzou – $73.9 million

    7. Kansas State – $69.8 million

    8. A&M – $69.2 million

    9. Iowa State – $67.9 million

    10. Tech – $57.3 million

    11. Colorado – $56.7 million

  98. Garret September 23, 2011 10:46 am

    madeinhawaii,

Trouble is, Navy and Army are really far away from the MWC schools and they have already been talking with the Big East for awhile now. The Big East really wants to hold on to their AQ spot and have been really smart about it, inviting TCU and going after the academies.

  99. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 10:50 am

Hate to lose Air Force. But looking at the CUSA schools not much chances of shifting some of those to the MWC pods and adding the academies to the two CUSA pods, eh? One, maybe, but not both. Too bad…

  100. Garret September 23, 2011 10:52 am

The TV disparity was actually much, much bigger (% wise) in the WAC than in any other conference. UH got something like $2.5 mil to $2.6 mil each year from Oceanic/K5/PPV and a little over $400k from the WAC’s TV deal. So, a total of about $3 mil in TV money. Boise State got about $750k one year I read because they played so many Friday night games on ESPN.

Schools like Idaho, New Mexico State, SJSU, and Utah State were not shown as much by ESPN so they got something like $200k to $300k from the WAC’s TV deal. UH and Boise State got $75k bonuses for moving games to Friday nights, but those schools rarely got those types of bonuses.

So, UH made $3 mil from TV some years while other conference schools made about $200k. That is a 15x difference, far bigger than any other conference.

Oklahoma asking Texas to put the Longhorn Network money into a pot that is split among the conference would be like the WAC asking UH to give a share of its PPV money to all WAC schools…and may be what the MWC is asking UH do.

  102. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 11:03 am

I don’t think Navy and Army would be a good fit in the MWC because of the extra-extra distance from Hawaii -> NY/MD.

Then again Army doesn’t have interest in the Big LEast and so the MWC is out too.

Navy would go only on the condition that there is stability. There is no stability…might not even be a conference left let alone stability.

AF isn’t stupid. They are not going to send their football program to a conference that is losing schools that are taking their FB programs with them. Plus they have to still figure out where they are going to put their other non-FB programs. WAC/WCC is no guarantee. I haven’t even read WCC or WAC rumors or chirps about whether or not those conferences would even accept AF non-FB. The smart bet would be to stick in the MWC where stable, natural traveling partners, rivalries, and w/in footprint.

  103. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 11:05 am

Too bad who plays in the BCS Bowls isn’t determined by voters and fans who are not directly affiliated in the way of $$$ with any of the conferences. Then all teams in the FBS would have their opportunities.

  104. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 11:09 am

    IWWTHM

I was looking at it from a CUSA + MWC joint endeavor. If two CUSA teams came into the MWC Pods, then Army and Navy might be a better fit in the two CUSA pods. But that won’t happen.

  106. Kevin September 23, 2011 11:16 am

The Longhorn Network $$$$$$ for Texas being put into Big 12 pot is NOT like UH’s measley $3 million being suggested to be put into the WAC or MWC pot.

The idea is the same, the reality of the actual dollars involved is too much to ignore.

You ask someone who’s already strapped for cash to share 100.00 with 8 people that will hurt. You ask someone with 100,000.00 to split with 8-10 people… well… I think that says it all.

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 11:19 am

    #104,

I think w/re to the merger they wanted 2 equally numbered conferences. 12-12 14-14 etc.

MWC would have 10 members, CUSA has 12 members. If the 2 academies join the CUSA side it would bring more imbalance

14(CUSA) – 12 (MWC)…Unless MWC invites more teams read: WAC then it probably would be a tough sell.

All of this would have to be done while you try and convince Army to join when they seem to be feeling good about where they are w/in the football landscape.

I will say that I like the idea of all the academies in a structure u are envisioning. Just would need to be tweeked.

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 23, 2011 11:20 am

    #107 **EDIT**

Interesting article about Brett Favre taking on an announcing job. What caught my attention was his stats while at Southern Miss from ’88-’90…

Anyway, Favre completed 55.4 percent of his passes in college for 6,772 yards, 39 touchdowns and 22 picks. And that got him picked in the second round of the 1991 draft by the Atlanta Falcons. The Green Bay Packers traded for him the next year, and the rest is well-documented history.

Didn’t realize his stats were so “meager”, as I was in the middle of my 5+year stint in Korea, and wasn’t paying much attention to him.

  115. Not an Expert September 23, 2011 12:48 pm

Hawaii subsidizing teams to play in Hawaii for football will cost about $150,000 per team, times 4 equals $600,000. Hawaii losing money from Oceanic of about $2 million or so because of the MWC TV rights. Less revenues more expenses where will the extra money come from? Don’t know the full details but it’s like UH being the turnip and being squeezed to kingdom come. Is UH expecting 10 to 15k increase in attendance when they play the MWC schools at the stadium?

  116. Willie September 23, 2011 12:59 pm

Havn’t score posted since the Colorado opener.

    Warriors 38 UC Davis 20

    Go Warriors!

  117. Garret September 23, 2011 1:02 pm

    Not an Expert,

It is actually $175k for travel subsidies for teams from the Mountain Time Zone.

UHAD is getting $1.9 mil from student fees.

Hawaiian Airlines is kicking in funds for the travel subsidies (they probably will cover some of the cost of the seats on flights using Hawaiian Airlines).

Don’t forget that UH is also subsidizing Big West teams that travel to Hawaii.

If the MWC is an AQ conference when UH joins, that would give about $1 mil per school more than MWC teams get now.

  118. Stephen Tsai September 23, 2011 1:03 pm

    Not An Expert:

Don’t forget the WAC revenue share UH will forfeit for this year.

  119. Garret September 23, 2011 1:05 pm

If the MWC and CUSA merge and get that automatic BCS payment, the $20 mil will be split among 22 schools…less than $1 mil per school per year. Currently, when the MWC gets a team in a BCS game (which will be basically every year, especially since the WAC won’t be competing for that spot), the MWC averages more than $1 mil per school per year.

So, the MWC won’t necessarily get more money by getting an AQ spot in combination with CUSA. The fact is that will split the money between 2 conferences and the MWC has been getting more than a 50% share of an AQ spot already. CUSA will get more money, MWC may get less. This is why CUSA keeps bringing it up and the MWC keeps saying they will think about it.

The MWC *will* make money from the playoff game between MWC and CUSA…that would probably bring in a nice amount of money since a BCS bowl spot will be at stake. Imagine UH facing Houston with a Fiesta Bowl spot on the line. Plus, both the MWC and CUSA will get a higher level of prestige compared with the other non-AQ conferences.

  120. Garret September 23, 2011 1:06 pm

    ST,

But with ESPN cutting the WAC’s TV money, that share will probably be under $1 mil. At least that is a 1-time expense, unlike travel subsidies.

  121. izzy September 23, 2011 1:09 pm

    This is cool:

    http://www.space.com/13068-seasons-change-space.html

  122. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 1:25 pm

As a football only member, we don’t know what % Hawaii would get of the MWC revenues, though, do we?

  123. A-joe September 23, 2011 1:30 pm

The MWC bylaws stipulates a members’ TV revenue cannot exceed beyond 2.3M until every other member reaches that plateau as well.

Soo, last year Hawaii generated over 4M in TV revenues. If Hawaii were in the MWC, 1.7M would have gone to MWC and dispersed amongst it’s members.

Now hypothetically, say if Hawaii had made 8M, they still would only be able to keep 2.3M and would have to give 5.7M to the MWC. Hawaii wouldn’t see any more TV revenue until each and every other member makes 2.3M as well.

    Crazy, yeah?

This is why BYU left. They felt they were unfairly carrying the league.

As Garrett stated, Hawaii is in a holding pattern with MWC about their TV revenue. A very precarious position to be in at the moment.

Darius Bright (Turf Toe – foot injury)

    Tavita Woodard (foot injury)

Clayton Laurel (hobbled by sore foot)

Desmond Dean (possible knee injury -probably not related to feet/shoe)

That’s a lot of foot related injuries three games into the season..

  125. Kevin September 23, 2011 1:43 pm

Not to nit-pick, but isn’t it a shoulder issue with Laurel?

  126. LizKauai September 23, 2011 1:53 pm

    SPEAKING OF SHOES!!!

    http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/130469378.html

    — The injury was never as debilitating as it may have sounded. A week ago, rookie Alex Green suffered an Achilles injury. Turns out, this was soreness caused by the back of shoe. Holding his cleat inside the locker room this week, Green showed his remedy.

The running back severed a triangle-shaped cut on the back heel of the shoe to relieve pressure. Now, he’s 100 percent healthy.

“Once I cut it open, it had room to breathe,” said Green, adding that he heard Jordy Nelson had a similar problem last year. “It feels fine now. As soon as we cut it and did some test runs, it didn’t bother me at all.

“Believe it or not, it was the shoe.”

Green and practice squad running back Brandon Saine played the role of Matt Forte this week. Green says he has watched film of the Bears tailback, trying to mimic his ability out of the backfield as much as possible.

“He’s a good patient runner,” Green said. “I’m simulating him the best that I can.”

Green doesn’t compare himself to Forte. They’re two different backs, he says.

So when will we see what the third-round pick out of Hawaii can do? Hard to say. Early on in camp, Green was a favorite on kick return but Randall Cobb secured that job. Green also showed potential as a third-down back, struggling at times in pass protection. Behind a spotty backup offensive line, he rushed for only 23 yards on 16 carries in the preseason.

Whatever down it is, it’s difficult to see Green stealing touches from Starks and Ryan Grant. For now, he’s in waiting.

“I’m just staying patient,” Green said, “and trying to get better every day.”

  127. madeinhawaii September 23, 2011 1:56 pm

    – there are many “timing/cohesion” issues that have resulted from injuries cutting into practice time;

    – Hawaii hits the road for it’s WAC opener next week.

Can Hawaii win the WAC by having “experienced” 2’s and 3’s?

  152. Ipu Man September 23, 2011 2:59 pm

    whack the WAC!

  153. postmanke September 23, 2011 2:59 pm

I’m no too worried about UNLV’s loss. little surprised on our run defense and how the young UNLV O-line was able to execute. No panic button yet.. it was a balance attack that beat us – not much worries – just gotta play through it!

Beat every California team no matter what!

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  162. mikey September 23, 2011 3:58 pm

Just got a e-mail showing this weekend NCAA football on TV.

UH vs. UC Davis on channel 788-1 in HD at 6:00 PM

But the game to watch is Oklahoma State @ Texas A&M 9:30 AM KITV #7 vs #8 should be a great match up.

I see that Texas A&M is heavy favorite with Football Fever Panelist.

UC Davis has a good passing game per coach Miano on Sports Animals – he said they have a very good screen pass play and also will try to run the ball up the middle and then outside.

  166. wafan September 23, 2011 4:17 pm

Ducks? Not that I know of. But then that much water might bode well for any web-footed animal. Can the Warriors run the paddle and shoot?

Ugg has been considered as a fashionable brand and spread all over the world. The ugg boots have high quality and they are the requisite needs of a majority of fashionistas. The real ugg boots should be snug, but not uncomfortable. Especially ugg adirondack must give you a feeling of stylish and comfort. Ugg clearance is simple and convenient, and the real uggs are resistance to dirty. Some people buy uggs cheap, and we can say it must be fake. Because its materials are expensive and of high quality. No matter men, women, and children can find a pair of real ugg boot.

As of 10:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 23, 2011, the orbit of UARS was 85 miles by 90 miles (135 km by 140 km). Re-entry is expected between 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, and 12:45 a.m., Sept. 24, Eastern Daylight Time (3:45 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. GMT). During that time period, the satellite will be passing over Canada and Africa, as well as vast areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The risk to public safety is very remote.

Well, that narrows it down. 🙄

KEKOA – Your #58 What organization are you collecting these items for? I started a similar drive on behalf of the Windward Homeless Coalition at the end of April. At our last outreach during a monthly Foodbank distribution in Kahuku, I gave nearly 1,000 items away in just under an hour & a half. One kid out of two had never had a book of her/his own before.

Will bring the rest of the ones we haven’t distributed yet. Perhaps we can coordinate our efforts to collect the books and distribute them.

apparently two reliable sources(dayton and brian) and the little birdie have confirmed that gerry blakes is attending citrus cc and should be eligible to come to manoa as a greyshirt in january.

should this happen the big question shall be…does he or doesn’t he, play this season or have his on court career start next fall?

i suppose a lot depends if we need him to take the court in january. in either case he’ll be able to make the next asian tour in four years.

The Big 12’s interim commissioner is also the person that was hired over a year ago to look at combining the MWC and CUSA for a football AQ spot. I wonder if that will make him more likely to suggest going after BYU or schools from the Big East since CUSA and the MWC are paying him right now.

By the way, for an interview with the Daily Oklahoman, Neinas said that he was going to suspend all of his non-Big 12 projects *except* the MWC/CUSA combination work.

“I do have a responsibility as a consultant for the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA on a project that I’ve been working on for over a year,” Neinas said. “I plan to see that project through. That should not in any way be in conflict with what I do with the Big 12.”

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

  268. Kekoa September 24, 2011 8:07 am

    Game Day!

    •Small kine reminder…Beat UCD!

•Big kine reminder…please bring gently used old childrens books, puzzels or board games to the Tailgate today.

There are several homeless family shelters on island we can re-distribute to for the children’s use. We can start with one, and see what the impact is.

This is not a giant, super-coordinated effort. It is something we Tsaiko’s can do in a very small way that will mean a lot to the children of the homeless. It would be nice to provide them with some educational material. The goal is to help break the circle of poverty these kids are facing by opening their eyes to the world thru reading and educating them.

Mahalo to BigWave for asking if we could do something to help.
