Tuesday

From today’s practice:

• Left wideout Darius Bright was absent for what was termed personal reasons.

• Terence Bell moved over from right slotback (after previously moving from right wideout) to play left wideout. Bell and Allen Sampson split reps with the first team.

• With Clayton Laurel resting a sore shoulder, Jordan Loeffler took reps as the No. 1 left tackle. Loeffler also worked at right tackle.

• David Lefotu, fully healthy from a knee issue, and Andrew Faaumu split reps at right guard.

• Matagisila Lefiti, who was on crutches after the UNLV game, practiced as the No. 1 center.

• The defensive secondary remained intact. Cornerback Mike Edwards said he believed he released early enough on one of the third-down plays in which he was called for defensive holding. On the second hold, he said he misjudged a play because of a pump-fake, and grabbed the receiver to prevent a touchdown. He apologized for both plays, as well as the fumble on the kickoff return.

• Brandon Leslie, who missed significant practice time because of a summer session class and a concussion, is getting an extended look at free safety.

    Good morning everyone!

Tsaiko-Vegas #3 was more fun and insightful for me since I did not have to dash off early Sunday morning this time. Talking with our Las Vegas pah-tay boss, I’ll start a rumor here: plan to stay through Sunday night (or longer) for #4. Just a rumor…. 🙄

    Anasia TV-gate Tsaikos –

Thank you for coming down to join us in cheering on our Warriors this past Saturday. Despite the score, it felt good to know I was in company of other fan-hopefuls.

    Next TV-gate, 10/1 @ LaTech @ 1pm HST –

We’ll travel over to Kailua side to Pinky’s as per Wassupdoc’s recommendation. Thank you, W-doc!

Will post formal announcement and remaining the schedule laters but you can RSVP number of bodies to tsaikotvgate (at) gmail (dot) com. Domo!

Actually, I think staying thru until Monday is a good tip for anyone leaving Vegas.

Also, if you are catching a cab to the airport tell the cabbie to use Flamingo instead of Tropicana. At times road work on Tropicana results in a nearly mile long line of cars waiting to make the right turn to Paradise. Glad I got the heads up on this early.

    Yea Jojo!

    HiHo!

  32. haka September 20, 2011 7:50 am

    Just my passionate opinion ~

It was a tough loss, but the team needs to know that the fans are over it already and are in the now.

If the fans can’t find the passion, how do they expect the team, who feels it the most, find it?

Everyone needs to bring the passion on Saturday!

    BRING IT!

  33. SteveM September 20, 2011 7:51 am

Of course, you should arrive on Thursday or earlier so you can stay up for karaoke until 0230+ on game day. 🙄

Tsaiko-Vegas week? Maybe do an excursion off the Vegas ship?

Sounding more like a cruise but had to remember to pay for the fuud and tips constantly.

BC mentioned this morning that UC Davis beat Stanford once…

  36. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:12 am

    #35,

Yes when Walt Harris (2005) was coaching Stanford for 2 seasons. They went 5-6 in 2005, the followed that season going 1-11 in 2006. Safe to say Stanford pretty much sucked right before the Harbaugh era.

Definitively not a Appellation St. vs. Michigan circa 2007.

  40. Shoko September 20, 2011 8:25 am

    Morning folks!

    Interesting tidbit here.

“WAC commissioner Karl Benson announced Tuesday that SJSU football coach Mike MacIntyre has been reprimanded for his actions on the field near the end of the Spartans’ 17-14 loss to Nevada last Saturday.”

“The first came after an attempted timeout was not granted by officials until 15 seconds had dripped off the clock. He also was upset with the officials’ spot of the ball on the second-to-last play of the game, which gave Nevada a first down and sealed the Wolf Pack’s victory.”

    Oooops! 😉

  41. Darren September 20, 2011 8:29 am

Looks like West Virginia was told “no thanks” by the SEC, and that Missouri is now in line for the 14th SEC team. In the potential dominoes game, that’s one less team for the new Big 12East. It’s out there that Rutgers and UConn are aggressively looking to be the 15th and 16th ACC teams. Big East has already lost Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC. That’d make five less teams for the Big 12East. Does that make TCU more likely to leave, or stay in the MW? Or does the Big 12East start looking at Boise State, AFA or others from the MW and CUSA?

The Southeastern Conference has an offer on the table for Missouri to join its league, and SEC officials are willing to wait for an answer from Missouri until the future of the Big 12 is decided.

Does that make TCU more likely to leave, or stay in the MW? Or does the Big 12East start looking at Boise State, AFA or others from the MW and CUSA?

It sounds like a number of teams are in play not for the revised Big 12. Even the MWC’s commissioner is openly talking about how the MWC could lose Boise State and Air Force to the Big 12.

Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle wrote:: “If Oklahoma and Texas do join the Pac 12, the Big 12 and Big East will create some kind of merger. Houston, Boise, BYU, Air Force and one or two others will be invited to join in the conference.”

  46. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:39 am

    #41,

MWC needs to put together an exit package deal for schools that want to leave. The ACC did it, now the MWC should too.

    $20M to exit.

    36 Months notice.

    Better safe than sorry.

  47. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:40 am

I think Hawaii would vote to approve such a clause…I mean yes we all wanted to go to the PAC-10…But once they go to 16 our chances went from slim/nothing to nothing basically.

  48. TChahng September 20, 2011 8:45 am

    Happy Birthday, Cousin Shelly!

  49. madeinhawaii September 20, 2011 8:45 am

So, the MWC might be dead before we become official members, eh? That’s worse news than last week’s game.

  50. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:46 am

    #49,

Might, but unlikely. The MWC will be fine.

  51. Darren September 20, 2011 8:47 am

Exit fee…yeah, $20 million would be a more effective deterrent than this…

Effective this date, the Mountain West has added to its Bylaws resignation parameters which establish a significant financial penalty for an institution that chooses to depart the Conference. If a member institution provides notice on or before the June 30 preceding its subsequent June 30 withdrawal date, it shall forfeit its final year of revenue. If the resigning member gives notice after the established June 30 notice date, it shall forfeit its final year of revenue plus pay a sum of $5,000,000 OR shall pay double the amount of the final year’s revenue, whichever is greater.

  53. Darren September 20, 2011 8:50 am

At least we won’t be playing Dallas Baptist in conference baseball.

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:50 am

    #51,

Well $5M is big for MWC-size schools. The problem is if the new conference Big LEast, B12 are willing to help subsidize the portion of the buyout.

Bump it up to $20-25M and that’ll keep members around. No conference, not even the SEC would be willing to pay that kind of exit fee on behalf of School ABC.

Hawaii, Fresno, UNR, UNLV, SDSU should move to make such a recommendation sooner rather than later.

  55. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:51 am

Or…The College of the Holy Ozarks in volleyball.

  56. TChahng September 20, 2011 8:51 am

  57. Shoko September 20, 2011 8:52 am

Doesn’t have to be if they don’t want it to be. It all depends on the language. It can be as iron clad as you want it.

And if the leaving party wants to challenge it in court…Good luck being in limbo and spending money on those legal fees…Oh and the wait…Love it love it love it.

Oh ok got it haha. Sorry I was reading it literally. =P.

  62. Darren September 20, 2011 8:59 am

Stiff exit fees make a statement…the ACC, and its member schools, are determined to be one of the big boy superconferences. The SEC may have overestimated its appeal…

Also, at last week’s ACC presidents meeting in Greensboro, N.C., the league’s presidents “unanimously” voted to increase the ACC’s exit fee to $20 million. This takes affect immediately. The previous exit fee amount was $12 million to $15 million.

    http://brett-mcmurphy.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/29532522/32035225

  63. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:01 am

    #62,

  64. LizKauai September 20, 2011 9:02 am

    Happy Birthday, Shelly!

    NCAA shell game continues…

    GO WARRIORS!

  65. Shoko September 20, 2011 9:03 am

The only reason I say that is because when Fresno State and Nevada announced their defection after June 30th, the so-called WAC exit fee of five million was reduced to less than one million for both schools when everything was said and done . Same with Colorado and Nebraska, if not mistaken. Once lawsuits, depending on the state in which those lawsuits are filed, the courts normally get those mediators involved. Legal fees are costly for both sides.

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:06 am

I’d like to see how the BCS AQ numbers will be for the Big LEast or B12 or the combination of the leagues.

We already know that the Big LEast sucks in football…and what’s left of the B12 in football is basically mid-level Conference USA type programs.

The MWC could very well be the better football conference especially if TCU decides to stay. Big LEast may not even be a shell of its former self when it comes to basketball with Pitt/Syracuse and maybe UCONN leaving.

  67. haka September 20, 2011 9:17 am

    #40 Shoko

I saw that game and he had a legitimate beef. The spot was really bad.

  68. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:20 am

    Shoko,

Those are legitimate issues that the MWC has to worry about. It makes it that much more important to get the language of the contract right and be willing to go all the way or at least fake it. haha.

  69. Garret September 20, 2011 9:21 am

    madeinhawaii,

The MWC will not die. Worst case, it will add a number of WAC teams…and they will be overjoyed to have UH subsidize their travel since their budgets are so tight right now.

  70. Garret September 20, 2011 9:23 am

There is no way that certain MWC teams would agree to a large exit clause right now. In fact, that $5 mil number is only if notice is given late…there is NO exit fee if a school gives notice by June 30. They just give up the final year’s conference distribution, which is tiny compared to standard exit fees.

  71. Slugger September 20, 2011 9:24 am

Congratulations, Jojo! See you at the tailgate & game!

iwwthm, no make fun of the Ozarks…I lived there once. 🙂 Nice people.

    Didn’t make it to practice & can’t tomorrow a.m.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  72. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:24 am

    #69,

UH isn’t locked into paying for any NEW members travel. It’s all TBD. If it came to that, doubt we would say, yes sir, can i have another.

  73. Garret September 20, 2011 9:25 am

Remember, current AQ conferences are not under evaluation during this 2008-2011 AQ period. The BCS has already clarified that they will retain their AQ status even if they lose a lot of teeams.

The MWC might get AQ status due to performance in the 2008-2011 AQ period. It is important to note that the MWC has no chance to get into the top 6 in the average team category in the 2008-2011 BCS evaluation period…even if the Big East and Big 12 are destroyed, they still have all their teams for the 2008-2011 evaluation period and are both significantly ahead of the MWC.

  74. Shoko September 20, 2011 9:25 am

#67 True. It was a legit challenge. It all boils down to how you handle the situation on the field. There have been coaches that have been verbally reprimanded for admonishing officials in the post-game interview. Rule is to not talk badly of the officiating on or off the field. They take the stuff very serious.

  75. Slugger September 20, 2011 9:26 am

    Happy birthday, cousin Shelley!

  76. Garret September 20, 2011 9:26 am

UH isn’t locked into paying for any NEW members travel. It’s all TBD. If it came to that, doubt we would say, yes sir, can i have another.

But what option does UH have? The WAC will be gone and there will be no other FBS conference available. The big problem with leverage comes when you have no options.

  77. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:28 am

    #76,

Do you think Utah St. and SJSU would say no to the MWC just because Hawaii wouldn’t be paying for their subs? The status quo when they begged us to stay in the WAC?

“The big problem with leverage comes when you have no options.”

    Yep.

  78. Garret September 20, 2011 9:32 am

Even when counting TCU’s numbers for the MWC, the Big East was ahead of the MWC in 2008 and 2009. In fact, the Big East was actually the #2 conference in some categories in the BCS evaluation period.

By having so little teams, the Big East got a 25% bonus in 2 of the AQ categories. They also had some teams go on nice runs recently.

The problem for the MWC isn’t the top schools, it is the bottom schools that drag the conference average down. Look at Sagarin this year for an example.

    94: UNLV

    131: Colorado State

    200: New Mexico

  79. Garret September 20, 2011 9:35 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

That is a very good point. The MWC could dictate whether or not USU and other WAC schools needed get travel subsidies from UH.

If the MWC gets raided and C-USA isn’t hurt as badly by raids, then the MWC won’t have any leverage though since they will only be able to add WAC school. C-USA has the superior TV contract and more NCAA basketball money.

  80. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:37 am

    #80,

True. That would be pretty junk for the MWC.

I used to hate Pat Forde…Recently I have been considering him my best friend. This conference realignment stuff is getting old and tiresome like a 50 cent…whoops family blog.

  81. Darren September 20, 2011 9:38 am

As intriguing as this sounds with the hopes of keeping TCU in the MW, I can’t see someone like the Fiesta Bowl being all that happy about having a MW or CUSA anchor team (when it used to be someone like Texas or Oklahoma).

According to Sentinel sources, the BCS board of directors has suggested that to continue operating, it needs six automatic qualifying conferences. That opens the door for the Mountain West and Conference USA to try and gather new friends and walk on in. Both have been on the outside looking in when it comes to the BCS party and would love to finally write their own invitation.

  82. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:38 am

Btw anyone “read” the audio or saw what went down between Mayweather and that HBO interviewer after the match?

Not only is Mayweather CS for not wanting to take on PacMan…he is also a total jerk.

  83. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 9:40 am

Are we on our way to a playoff system with 4 Uber BCS conferences? lol

  84. Garret September 20, 2011 9:40 am

I think that the MWC openly talking about forming some agreement with C-USA to get a combined AQ spot could be good for both conferences if they are raided. A full AQ spot pays double what a team earns when they make a BCS bowl game…and some of that money has to be shared with the Sun Belt, MAC, and WAC.

If the MWC isn’t raided, I think they will have their appeal granted and will get AQ status for 2012 and 2013…but probably lose AQ status after that unless certain teams improve or TCU comes back. If the MWC and C-USA is raided, sharing an AQ spot could bring both conferences a lot more prestige and money.

If the MWC cannot get AQ status after getting raided, putting itself in a category above the other non-AQs (half-AQ status) would at least be a step up.

The BCS contract ends in 2013 and the whole system will probably be redone after all the conference upheaval. The MWC having some type of AQ status at that time could help position it for the next system.

Of course it won’t happen but if I had my choice the following would be the new Big 12 or 14.

    Kansas

    Kansas State

    Iowa State

    Baylor

    SMU

    TCU

    Houston

    Fresno State

    Nevada

    Boise State

    Air Force

    San Diego State

    BYU

    Hawaii

    Iwwthm,

Isn’t that pathetic? Down to it’s core it’s a very SAD statement.

Don’t think (at least I don’t think I need to) I need to elaborate on how many other coaches in other sports at ALL athletic programs bust their okoles day in and day out as much as football coaches and yet, they are at the mercy of ONE program.

I compare my disgust to that of how BSU is being ultimately punished for the actions of their tennis program. People, including myself have commented on how unfair it is and I the grand scope of things, it’s equally just as unfair as far as ethics goes.

But, money is involved and why the hell should I expect ethic sensibility to reign supreme?

There comes a time, when all college D1 football coaches must realize that they have MORE than just their program to look out for. Ooops… the time is NOW.

This is the reality as stated. If it’s all about football, then the pressure and expectation must remain that. No passes, no excuses.

If our sports society dictates that ONE sport reigns supreme above all else just because…. Then so be it!!!

Pay them the millions, but expect the WORLD in return.

People opine how unfair it is that one sport has to feed the mouths of others, well guess what????? I and some like me that don’t put football and ONLY football on a pedestal never asked for it to be that way and the entertainment and pride that OTHER sports can bring to a community and a university is something our sports society is missing out on.

So the next time someone says, “eh who needs these other sports”, well go look your sons and daughters in the face and tell them that when they don’t want to pick up the helmet and pads as their sport of choice that could help them earn a college education or develop relationships and learn team building skills when they get older.

  95. Garret September 20, 2011 10:22 am

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

I took some time to think about it and I came around to your position on the MWC’s leverage with WAC schools. All of the WAC schools would fight for a MWC spot, so I think that the MWC will get to determine whether or not UH would have to pay travel subsidies to any WAC school that gets added to the MWC.

It should also be noted that we owe a HUGE mahalo to the Warriors play on the field last season and the UH admin behind the scenes for getting UH the MWC invitation last season. Imagine how bad things would be now for UH with realignment if UH was stuck in the WAC…with no leverage at all UH would have to agree to whatever the MWC asked for or sink with the WAC.

No matter how bad things look for MWC schools, things probably look 100x worse if you are a WAC school like SJSU and have to worry about whether or not you’ll have a conference in 2 years.

  96. Garret September 20, 2011 10:26 am

Kevin is correct that all nonrevenue sports rely upon their football (and sometimes basketball) teams to be able to survive financially. Just look at schools like Cal that had to cut a ton of nonrevenue teams because of how much money they are losing.

It should be noted that those nonrevenue sports wouldn’t exist if football and basketball hadn’t been making so much money already. We see so many schools (NMSU, SJSU, Idaho, almost all of the Sun Belt and MAC) that can only afford all of their nonrevenue sports because they play bodybag games in football.

  97. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 10:26 am

    Garret,

Why are some articles stating that a MWC-CUSA merger ala Championship game will get AQ status?

Aren’t the BCS numbers diluted at that point?

Some of these articles seem maybe not 100% sure but pretty sure its a given. I don’t understand how that would work.

  98. Stephen Tsai September 20, 2011 10:27 am

Hey, question for the people here who know better:

What happens to the Texas station if the school joins the Pac-12?

  99. Garret September 20, 2011 10:28 am

Left wideout Darius Bright was absent for what was termed personal reasons

This is not good and I hope that Bright can be back at practice soon. UH needs its starting receivers to get as many reps as possible, something that has been a problem since training camp.

  100. AlaWai September 20, 2011 10:28 am

    #100,

Supposedly PAC12 is going to make some concessions to the “equal sharing of revenue” clause.

Not sure if all the details have been ironed out. But I cannot see Texas joining any conference that will force them to ax the $300M LHN.

  102. Garret September 20, 2011 10:29 am

David Lefotu, fully healthy from a knee issue

  104. Garret September 20, 2011 10:34 am

Why are some articles stating that a MWC-CUSA merger ala Championship game will get AQ status?

Aren’t the BCS numbers diluted at that point?

Some of these articles seem maybe not 100% sure but pretty sure its a given. I don’t understand how that would work.

The MWC and C-USA have apparently been working on an arrangement where their champions will play each other for a guaranteed BCS spot. That would effectively make each conference a half-AQ conference, a step above the other non-AQs.

When you look at it from the perspective of the AQ conferences, they changed the rules a few years ago and basically guaranteed that one non-AQ team will make the BCS anyway. Since that will come from the MWC or C-USA (since all the top WAC teams are gone), they won’t be giving up any extra spots.

If 2 teams from the MWC/C-USA make BCS games, the second team will earn $4.5 mil, just like a second team from an AQ conference earns $4.5 mil (and BSU earned $4.5 mil when it was the lower ranked non-AQ team in the Fiesta Bowl).

So, it won’t cost the BCS any money but it will elevate the MWC and C-USA. Smart idea all around. The WAC/Sun Belt/MAC will lose a little money (their shares of the money that the MWC/WAC have earned from their BCS spots), but either the BCS throws a few mil to them to make up that money or they figure those 3 conferences have no leverage anyway.

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 10:36 am

    #105,

    Got it. That makes sense.

Honestly it is better than nothing should it have to go that far. No wonder before the meat of this realignment shakeup CUSA was scratching at the MWC’s door and Thompson gave one of those “we’ll call you…” deals.

    Things change.

  113. Garret September 20, 2011 11:00 am

Oklahoma gave their list of demands for them to stay in the Big 12. I actually think they are fairly reasonable–ESPN should be forced to pull back on the Longhorn Network and the Big 12 commissioner has been less than effective.

One thing that should be pointed out–over the history of the Big 12, and also if we just count the last 5 years, *Oklahoma* has gotten more money than Texas from the Big 12. When the Big 12 began, Nebraska got the most money (since they were on national TV the most), but after Nebraska stopped being ranked then Oklahoma was #1 in Big 12 revenue. I didn’t see Oklahoma complaining all those years when the conference was giving it more than Texas…

The University of Oklahoma is considering remaining in the Big 12, but only in a “reformed” version of the conference that includes hard and fast rules for Texas’ Longhorn Network and removal of Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe, a high-ranking Big 12 source told The Oklahoman on Tuesday.

Ironically, the source said, Texas supported another candidate for commissioner four years ago, when Beebe was hired, while OU supported Beebe.

I think, why would BYU entertain the big12….if invited, what with the uncertainty of stability in the big12?, and at this point with the bigeast imploding, could TCU step back and remain in the MWC along with BYU to make the conference even more attractive for whatever’s???

  115. Garret September 20, 2011 11:02 am

I wonder if the current PAC12 schools ever wonder about what a 16-team PAC would mean to the competitiveness among the schools.

We hear about USC, Oregon, Cal as being the contenders of the PAC.

If OU, Texas, Okie St. get in…you can pretty much kiss your chances at being anything more than a school that gets its paycheck every year.

Sometimes OSU, Arizona, ASU, are mentioned as possible title contenders. FORGET It now. And to the UCLA’s, Wazzu, Colorado etc…no way.

Guess its more important to scoop the money then to stay somewhat competitive.

Good news from ST on the o-line:

#97 – Definitely don’t agree with the Clown most of the time, but in this case, I agree that UH needs to go back to a more simplistic, all black uniform, (like the JJ days), that casts a spirit of ONE. All the fancy stuff takes away from what we’d like our players to be…

Pomai: I think UH will have a struggle this weekend and alot of soul searching…Nonetheless, I predict that UH will win: 35-17

As for Bright, if his personal reasons have to do with whether he wants to be a part of the team, then I think he needs to comes to grip with it or just leave…Either you’re “all in” or its time to move on…

  132. Garret September 20, 2011 12:30 pm

Navy and Air Force were about to join the Big East before the ACC took Pitt/Syracuse?

Before the sudden news broke last weekend that Pittsburgh and Syracuse were leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big East was in the final stages of acquiring Navy as a football-only member.

No official invitation was extended by the league, but both parties had extensive discussions about Navy joining the league in football only and it very well could have happened in the next couple of weeks, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

Besides Navy, the Big East also was targeting Air Force and league sources felt confident both schools would have been Big East members, perhaps within the next year – that is until Pitt and Syracuse announced they were leaving for the ACC.

I love our Coaches.. Love our players.. and so we had a couple of aberrations, it’s not the end of the world. If we get 7 wins, we’ll do better than half the teams out there. If we get 8, better still… nine – awesome!… ten? Outstanding!… 11? I’d be in the streets screaming Mack and Company’s names like I was preaching Jehovah!….

Okay.. maybe not that far.. but you get my drift… We still got a lot of season left and many opportunities to have a great, even incredible season. We were 1-2 last season and won 10.

Let’s not forget that we are a mid-major that nobody but the WAC wanted. But thanks to a lot of hard working people including our coaches we are now MWC bound … Our Oline looks depleted this season, but the cupboards are pretty well stocked for the seasons to come. Just waiting for the buggas to put on a little more meat…

Would we have as much to look forward to without Mack and Company? I shudder to think.

Okay, he’s not perfect… Maybe not your 3-5 million dollar Coach. Nor are Aranda and Rolo… but I believe we are still on the right track. Season’s may be put together on a whim.. but good programs are built over time with a lot of sweat, error and correction, more sweat, more errors, more corrections, but with determination, perseverance, tenacity, accountability and solid community involvement/participation. It’s a slow process but I can see the mountain moving.

  134. Kevin September 20, 2011 12:48 pm

It sounds to me that Oklahoma State hasn’t liked what it has been hearing from the Pac-12…the quotes from Pickens are much stronger against the move than before.

Boone Pickens doesn’t believe the Big 12 is dead. The Oklahoma State benefactor even believes Texas A&M’s departure for the SEC can be stopped.

“I think the Aggies are sobering up,” Pickens told The Oklahoman.

Pickens said if OSU and OU enter the Pac-12, “are you going to be full-fledged members? Not ever, probably. You’ll be viewed as the division without the ocean. You’ll get to play SC (Southern Cal) at Stillwater every eight years. That’s not much of a deal.”

Is there anything that prevents the MWC from rescinding UH’s invitation? What if Baylor, Missouri, Kansas, etc. says, we’ll join the MWC, but not if we have to fly to Hawaii?

Or what if CUSA says, yeah, we’ll merge, but not with Hawaii?

Garret: Found a possible problem. Mahalo.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with University’s budgeting process – regardless of the department or college or program – here is a brief summary of how things get done using the University of Hawai`i Office of Intercollegiate Athletics as an example. That’s its formal name by the way.

The budgeting process formally begins in early July at the programmatic level and then starts moving up the ladder – first at the Chancellor’s Office, then to the President’s Office, then to the Board of Regents.

At all levels, budget analysts examine the requests and require their justification.

Based upon conversations with key policy-makers over the past several months, there are serious financial issues dealing with many different topics that need to be resolved internally over the next two months since the 2012-2013 UH System Operating Budget will be submitted to the Legislature around Thanksgiving.

NOTE: Normally, the budget would be submitted about two weeks earlier, but APEC has really messed up legislative timetables.

Remember, unlike the Department of Education or the Department of Health budgets which are submitted by the Governor’s Office, the University of Hawai`i’s Operating & CIP Budgets are submitted directly to the Legislature because of UH’s semi-autonomous status within state government.

Up until three fiscal years ago, operating budget requests – such as travel expenses – were almost always routinely approved before heading on downtown; however, that changed starting in 2008 – 2009 (fall of 2007) when a number of state-wide $$$$ issues came up – the faltering economy, union contracts, rising petroleum costs & cutbacks in a wide range of public services to name just a few – and, yes, even the 2010 elections locally & nationally.

The loss of earmarks alone cost UH almost $100 million. That didn’t impact intercollegiate athletics directly, but it sure put the pressure on department heads on all ten campuses.

The Governor does not get directly involved in UH financial matters until the budget lands at the Legislature; however, over the first several years after UH became semi-autonomous, there was at least a minimal attempt to keep the relationship relatively civil.

The Governor can make her/his position known at the Legislature in a variety of different ways, but the biggest weapon is refusing to release funding come the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.

This is one of the reasons why I support revising how external financial support is generated. It’s not just salaries & shower soap & summer school scholarships but also we have to pick up travel costs both for our soon-to-be 20 teams as well as visiting teams.

Public universities with successful intercollegiate athletics programs have developed public support programs so that tax money can be used in other ways at the campuses.

No need kick out Hawaii. The MWC was formed as a new conference and left Hawaii in the old conference. Maybe a Mountain Midwest Conference would be formed with C-USA schools? 🙄

  155. Slugger September 20, 2011 2:27 pm

Congrats to Croson! She’s impressive when she goes for a kill or on her serve.

Hope the ailing Warriors are healing. GO WARRIORS!!!

  156. Kevin September 20, 2011 2:27 pm

    Iwwthm,

    RE: Hawaii and Conference Realignment.

    Good to know, BUT…….

As I say, “sleep with one eye open and one hand on the baseball bat”.

  157. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 2:30 pm

    #158,

Oh no…I am not 100% about where we are in terms of the contract with the MWC.

If it hasn’t been signed and “awaiting effective date” then we could face problems.

ANYTHING is possible….and I’d trade the bat for a shotgun to be quite frank. It’s just that kind of sports world.

  158. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 2:32 pm

    d1,

luckily for *now* we can rest assured on the NCAA moratorium that prohibits formation of new conferences.

then again if the BCS schools are basically breaking away from the NCAA the MWC/CUSA schools could do the same.

I was happy when I learned of that specific NCAA rule but it means basically nothing since Universities across the nation seem to not care about the NCAA to begin with.

    Scary and Sad.

  159. Kevin September 20, 2011 2:32 pm

    UH and autonomy….

It’s value to some appears to hinder the assistance UH athletics seeks from the legislature as a result of those seeking to garner the U-P-P-E-R hand.

    Haters gonna hate.

  160. Kevin September 20, 2011 2:34 pm

When sleeping and obviously laying down, a shotgun requires a good stance to absorb the kickback.

We’re not all like a T-800 and can fire one with one arm.

A baseball bat can result in a debilitating blow with one swing, even in a prone position.

  161. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 2:35 pm

A look at what a true MWC-CUSA merger might look like.

  162. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 2:36 pm

    From North Carolina to Hawaii….Yikes

  163. Kevin September 20, 2011 2:37 pm

    Iwwthm,

Actually, in todays COLLEGIATE and PRO sports world, a shotgun won’t do the trick. A trusted individual needs the “football”, you know, that thing that accompanies the US President around. The thing with our nuclear launch codes.

Sometimes the best way to fix everything is… ahem… a CLEAN slate.

  164. Ipu Man September 20, 2011 3:32 pm

    hmmm…no posting from 2:37pm to 3:44pm…

  165. Ipu Man September 20, 2011 3:33 pm

    Hmmmm…my clock says 3:44pm but Tsai’s clock says 3:32pm…

  166. Ipu Man September 20, 2011 3:33 pm

    Hawaii time?

  167. Ipu Man September 20, 2011 3:36 pm

I thought Darius Bright played pretty well considering

his injury. Still think he would make a great defensive back

    to cover those big receivers…

  168. Ipu Man September 20, 2011 3:41 pm

Wikipedia says UC Davis is ranked as one of the top 10 public universities in the nation, and consistently ranks amongst the best universities in the world.

Boise State’s coach Peterson coached thar…

  169. Garret September 20, 2011 3:47 pm

Because I’m PARANOID that way, Garret or anyone else with insight:

Is there anything that prevents the MWC from rescinding UH’s invitation? What if Baylor, Missouri, Kansas, etc. says, we’ll join the MWC, but not if we have to fly to Hawaii?

Or what if CUSA says, yeah, we’ll merge, but not with Hawaii?

    WarriorMojo,

I don’t think that UH’s invitation would be rescinded, that would be very bad PR. Plus, with travel subsidies and good BCS numbers last season, there is not much incentive to exclude UH.

However, certain issues have STILL not been decided on and could make UH wish to not be in the MWC. For example, the TV issue is still not determined. If the MWC makes their TV rule to be like the Pac-12 and Big 10, then UH’s PPV deal would be prohibited. The MWC could give UH just a partial TV share (since UH isn’t a member in all non-football sports)…going from $2.5 mil (plus normally about $400k from the WAC) to less than $1 mil would be hard on UH financially.

The travel subsidy issue also is not set for schools from the central and eastern time zones. If they didn’t want UH to be a part of a C-USA or Big 12 merger, all they would have to say is that UH’s travel subsidy would be $1 mil per game from the central time zone and $1.5 mil from the eastern time zone. That would force UH out of a conference merger.

So, I seriously doubt that UH’s invitation would be rescinded. However, they could easily make UH quit the conference if they wanted to. I doubt this will happen though, given the travel subsidies (which would be slightly higher for Central Time Zone schools and even higher for Eastern Time Zone schools) and having UH be football-only.

We should remember that UH is not a full member of the MWC, so if they want 12 full members and can fill up with Big 12 schools or other C-USA targets (they keep trying to get SMU/Houston/UTEP and get turned down), then they won’t want/need UH.

If the MWC/CUSA merger gets half-AQ status, then UH’s AQ numbers will be worthless to the MWC. Then we have to sleep with both eyes open instead of just 1 eye open.

  170. ai-eee-soos September 20, 2011 3:48 pm

    What you guys think ….

Boise State’s coach Peterson to UCLA ?

    slick rick on thin ice.

  171. primo123 September 20, 2011 3:49 pm

someone reported b moniz sighting at the craps table in the cal on sunday. if he likes to gamble, i wonder who he picked….rebels maybe?…

  172. J September 20, 2011 3:51 pm

“The Sugar Bowl acknowledged it made several campaign donations to then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco of Louisiana in the mid-2000s – in violation of federal tax law – and a group has filed a complaint about the matter with the IRS.”

  173. Ipu Man September 20, 2011 3:52 pm

The defensive coach for UC Davis, JasonFisk, played in the NFL from 1995-2006 with the Minnesota Vikings, Tennesee Titans, San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns and St. Louis Rams. He played in Super Bowl XXXIV, recording a sack of the Rams’ Kurt Warner, and came within one game of advancing to the Super Bowl with the Vikings during the 1997 season.

  174. whitey September 20, 2011 3:56 pm

primo123, i am not sure, but normally da warriors leave Vegas right after the game on Hawaiian 17 around 1:30am, so am confused as to how b moniz can be at the cal. unless, it is his dad or relative.

  175. whitey September 20, 2011 3:57 pm

last year, if you took the early sunday am flight and if da warriors were on the road, they were usually on that flight. i would assume that nothing has changed.

  176. Kevin September 20, 2011 3:58 pm

    Whitey,

    Or could be more rumors.

BUT nobody spreads rumors on a blog right?

  177. whitey September 20, 2011 3:58 pm

but then i could be mistaken cause i was not on that flight this year.

  178. whitey September 20, 2011 4:01 pm

kevin, i not saying much on this, but am kind of laughing when i see this kind of things posted. could be true, but could be false, but would have disputed it if i was on the flight like i was two years ago from vegas.

  179. d1shima September 20, 2011 4:01 pm

    Maybe was Bobby Moniz.

    Or Barbara Moniz,

    or Ba-chan Moniz…

  180. madeinhawaii September 20, 2011 4:03 pm

OH yeah.. lots of Moniz (monies) on the craps tables… I’m sure.. show me some corroborating evidence, please.

  181. whitey September 20, 2011 4:04 pm

kevin, if any of the players were at the cal, fremont, main street, golden nugget, 4 queens, or fitzgeralds, it would have been posted long ago. downtown is an extension of hawaii and anyone thinking you can go unnoticed there is drunk, stoned, or stupid.

  182. whitey September 20, 2011 4:05 pm

d1, you get plenty names up your sleeve. hahahahaaaaaa

  183. Doyle Tricoche September 20, 2011 4:14 pm

So I know that Offer of the Day would be a great idea but any other tips would be much appreciated! thanks xxx

  184. Kevin September 20, 2011 4:15 pm

Just sayin wouldn’t be the first time someone comes on a blog to spread a rumor about a UH student-athlete, especially after a loss.

Of course the little sly “wonder who he bet on” comment only shows discontent for the target individual.

Typical internet classless and cowardly act.

  185. primo123 September 20, 2011 4:16 pm

i knew i shoulda took his picture…..well i KNOW it was him….I guess we can leave it at that….but peoples…..it was just weird seeing him there after his 20 point fav team just lost by 20…..i wish he woulda used better sense that coming out to the casino after that loss….doesnt give you a good feeling about it all….maybe i watch too much tv…..

  186. primo123 September 20, 2011 4:29 pm

Dont spread it any further. I called Coach T and he said he’ll handle it. Whats done is done. Nothing Moniz did individually affected the outcome of the game, they sucked at all phases of the game. Just bad judgment on his part for showing up at the casino, it just didn’t look good. Hope he wins the rest of games this season. Go Bows!

  187. whitey September 20, 2011 4:31 pm

best way to find out, ST what flight did da warriors leave las vegas??? my feeling is that they left on the 1:30 or 1:55 am Hawaiian flight right after the game and no player had permission to extend their stay.

  188. tom mui September 20, 2011 4:34 pm

ST – perhaps you should require a real names on the blog to avoid innuendos, libelous or slanderous remarks or materials on the blog.

Too many people throw in their manure hiding behind their blog names in the internet.

  189. LizKauai September 20, 2011 4:35 pm

  191. Bryson September 20, 2011 4:38 pm

Maybe D.Bright is doing some soul searching, maybe he had a class to make up hopefully it’s nothing serious but only those within the program know why he was absent….as for the injury he’s been playing with if he’s not able to do what he needs to out there the coaches should recognize that and let him heal I wouldn’t mind seeing A.Sampson starting again he held his own against PAC 12 corners and I also saw him constantly playing each play at full speed so I hope he gets a shot on Sat if D.Bright can’t go

  192. LizKauai September 20, 2011 4:40 pm

  193. Bryson September 20, 2011 4:41 pm

So what big deal if Moniz was at the casino,it is after the game they have Sunday off,as long as he’s 21 it doesn’t matter, maybe he was spending someone with his family..

  194. COCOBEAN September 20, 2011 4:43 pm

    Garret,

The Big 10 has been tight lipped about their intentions. What do you think is on their mind? There’s been talk in the past about them trying to get into the East Market. Missouri to the Big 12 was talked about waay before Missouri to the SEC. They’ve ben wooing ND forever.

Any inkling whats going on with them. The Big 10 network seems to have more money making potential than Texas’ and BYU’s or anything any other conference may be thinking doing.

  204. Jack Flash September 20, 2011 5:10 pm

    Aloha all,

Just got back from Vegas. Good trip (other than the UNLV loss of course!) Was nice to see so many Hawaii fans at the game! Sunday, I went to the Cal to cash in some chips from the night before, and saw B. Moniz sitting at the roulette table with a couple friends! So, I walked over, put down a bet on red (winna!) and I told him good luck with the rest of the season, and that they will get their swagger back. He’s really humble and seemed genuinely happy that someone came over to talk to him, rather than just gawk from a distance. It’s all good. He looked like he was just enjoying a little time off before heading back to Hawaii.

  205. wafan September 20, 2011 5:11 pm

    Hi Tom!

    Still at the office?

  206. wafan September 20, 2011 5:12 pm

    Nytal!

  207. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 5:16 pm

Sorry, but if Sunday is a mandatory day off, Moniz is 21+ years old, and got the coaches permission to go gamble off a few bucks I really don’t see what the big deal is.

  208. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 5:17 pm

Unless there is some kind of NCAA/WAC/UHAD rule that prohibits gambling by players. But I don’t know of any particular rule.

  209. whitey September 20, 2011 5:19 pm

primo123, i apologize. looks like jack flash confirmed your take. i am kinda amazed that the coaches complain about the trip being too long, then spend another day in vegas instead of coming home to rest and recover. just my take

  210. Shoko September 20, 2011 5:20 pm

Hmm, Moniz sighting playing craps day after game? Well, better that than him cashing a parlay ticket! Then again, it could be Mo’s doppleganger. 😉

  211. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 5:21 pm

    #211,

    Yeah that’s true.

  212. whitey September 20, 2011 5:24 pm

so instead of coming home early sunday morning, the athletic dept had more than enough money to pay for the extra night, but couldn’t afford to pay for the return trip after the UW game. most of the visiting teams to hawaii ask for an earlier game so they can return home after the game, so am kinda confused on this trip being extended if the athletic department needs money.

  213. ai-eee-soos September 20, 2011 5:25 pm

” … The Pac-12 will not be getting any bigger. The conference announced Tuesday night that it would not expand, dousing speculation that it could be a destination for Big 12 schools Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and possibly Texas and Texas Tech.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, who has been saying the league was not being proactive about adding schools, said the following in a statement:

“After careful review we have determined that it is in the best interests of our member institutions, student-athletes and fans to remain a 12-team conference. While we have great respect … ”

From USA Today sport section … link …

  214. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 5:27 pm

    re: Student Athlete Gambling

Taken from a U of Indiana compliance webpage…Apparently student athletes are only restricted from gambling on SPORTS..BOTH PRO AND COLLEGIATE.

    http://iuhoosiers.cstv.com/compliance/ind-compliance-gambling-ncaa-rules.html

  215. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:28 pm

Ok then, I’ve met Jack Flash in person so easier to believe.

So with that being said, the implication of a student-athlete that is of age being at a craps table in Vegas means what??? Well, as Jack Flash mentioned “it’s all good”.

Sometimes when people present things on a blog, their intention is usually negative considering the context of the post when someone says “I wonder who he bet on… the Rebels???”.

Some people would prefer people to wallow in a black hole after a loss I guess.

  216. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 5:31 pm

    #215,

    Good news!….I think.

Big East may still to crap-o-la and TCU might want to come back to a MORE stable MWC at this point.

  217. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:32 pm

    iwwthm,

Of course. It makes sense, but a craps table ain’t that.

Of course the person that originally laid down the sighting wanted to portray the false image of just that… a potential violation and an assassination of character (in this case, a student-athlete).

Again the typical norm following a loss in which said person lost money on the game.

Again, gambling is a choice and no one forces one to play “easy money”.

  218. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 5:32 pm

    #217,

Yep…i don’t see a problem either. Not like they are supposed to live in a box 24/7.

I would have loved the chance to play roulette with him. I think I’d have been a winner too.

  219. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:34 pm

    whitey,

Well, I dunno what the accounting figures are, but you raise a legitimate question.

But there are other sports at UH that will end up paying the price for extended trips in their season for budgetary reasons.

    Double-standard you know.

  220. whitey September 20, 2011 5:37 pm

maybe i not thinking straight, but staying an extra night is not logic unless we get plenty of money floating around at manoa. so the question of trip being too long is not a valid one for da warriors. think i go rest and maybe it will make sense. very confusing on how the coaches think.

  221. whitey September 20, 2011 5:39 pm

    kevin, BINGO!!!!!!!!

  222. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:39 pm

    Well…

If the two big brothers want something, mommy and daddy can say they’re gonna cut back, but they can turn around and cut off the allowances and perks to the little brothers and little sisters to offset what the two big brothers want.

  223. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:44 pm

But then little sisters and little brothers are busting their okoles to cover their end of the deal only to have mommy and daddy say no can because the big brothers come first but then….

    NEVERMIND.

    I better stop while Im ahead…. 👿

  224. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:47 pm

One thing to consider is that if $$$$$ is an issue, Boyd Gaming is a big supporter of UH athletics and if they had worked out a deal at their properties to cut back costs to UH then, this extra night stay issue may be moot.

  225. Kevin September 20, 2011 5:48 pm

I still don’t take back what I said at 221, 224, and 225 though as it relates in SO MANY other ways.

  226. Shoko September 20, 2011 5:50 pm

Could staying the extra night after the game have been part of a package deal for staying in Vegas for the week? Just wondering…

  227. Loura Kotlowski September 20, 2011 5:56 pm

Really I know that OOTD would be a good idea but any other tips would be very appreciated! thanks xxxxxxxxxxx

  228. el burro sabio September 20, 2011 6:38 pm

Do we know for a fact when or what flight the team returned on? And what time Mo was sighted?

  229. KBayJohn September 20, 2011 6:44 pm

    @Liz for #194.

I so agree, those people have suffered so much over the last year and continue to suffer for such a great country and people. God bless them and I will say a prayer for them tonight.

  230. Jack Flash September 20, 2011 6:46 pm

Well, there weren’t any other players there that I recognized. Maybe Mo just switched to catch a later flight so he could be with some friends who made the trip? I dunno. Like I said before, he seems like a very cool person- very approachable. He even got up to shake some folk’s hands and give/receive hugs from some other bystanders.

  231. Jack Flash September 20, 2011 6:48 pm

#231- sorry bro- it’s Vegas. I wasn’t keeping track of time. The sun was still out, and I was drinking a beer!

  232. madeinhawaii September 20, 2011 6:54 pm

    chawan-cut

    Mahalo!

  233. madeinhawaii September 20, 2011 7:12 pm

Road trips wouldn’t be too bad if you have the freedom to be with whomever you want to be with and go here, there, anywhere, when you’re not practicing. But when you have strict curfew, does and don’ts … can and cannot dos … it can get pretty monotonous and boring. After a while, you find it hard to get a good night’s sleep because you’re not fully expended, physically, emotionally, or otherwise. It’s hard to share a room for more than a week with someone who’s not a family member or your better half… much less have to spend your time with the same bunch of guys day in and day out and exercise diplomacy 24-7 … the kettle can get a full head of steam with no where to let it out.

When I worked in Japan, I traveled extensively, and while I used to love company outings, after three days … forget it.. I wanted to go elsewhere with anybody else but someone from the same company. But as a corporate officer, you had to behave properly.. say the right things… bend don’t break.. etc.. etc.. Usually there were less than 100 people and I usually had my own room but even then…three days and I would just about go stir crazy. When we had to share rooms, it was so much more difficult to endure.

  234. 22Tokyo September 20, 2011 7:23 pm

#194 Thank you LizKauai….it’s 2:33pm, the Typhoon is scheduled to hit Tokyo in a couple of hours. It’s been raining since last night and the wind is beginning to pick up. American embassy is telling us the wind speed of the center of the Typhoon is 85 knots with gusts up to 120 knots.

    Thanks again for the prayer….

  235. rainbowfan September 20, 2011 7:37 pm

At about 7:15 pm on the Call the Coach show tonight, a caller really ticked off the Coach. What did the caller say ? I missed that part of the show.

  236. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 7:51 pm

    #239,

I think he criticized how Mack shouldn’t put Parmesan cheese on seafood based pastas.

  237. whitey September 20, 2011 7:56 pm

or maybe the caller asked if he wants a “bobbie” sandwich (biting my lips)

  238. izzy September 20, 2011 8:03 pm

    # 173: “someone reported b moniz sighting . . .”

    # 187: “i knew i shoulda took his picture . . .”

    # 188: “I called Coach T and he said he’ll handle it.”

If you tell the truth, there will be less you’ll need to remember.

  239. izzy September 20, 2011 8:08 pm

    Re: #215

There goes my plan to have the Warriors campaign for entry to the Pac-12 making it “The Baker’s Dozen.”

  240. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:09 pm

It’s nice to hear Larry Scott talk a bit of sense about all of this.

The added competition of Texas, OU, OSU to the PAC12 would decimate and shame the bottom tier of the PAC…even more so than it is now.

There is hardly parity in the teams that exists now let alone adding schools like OU and Texas.

Wazzu, Colorado, Oregon St, UCLA may never see a bowl game for 20 years if the conference were to expand.

  241. kev-1 September 20, 2011 8:10 pm

That’s funny. Cuz I was at the casino on Saturday during the game and was sitting at the craps table with a guy that looked just like Moniz. HEY, WAIT A MINUTE????? Who was that in the game then? IMPOSTER!!!! No wonder we lost.

Trust me, you can believe this story as much as the other one about Moniz being in a casino. Somehow I don’t thing ANY of the coaches OR players would have been cool with that. Not even Moniz.

  242. kev-1 September 20, 2011 8:11 pm

I believe Larry Scott about the Pac12 not expanding about as much as I do the Moniz gambling story.

Is Pinnochio running this blog tonight?

  243. Slugger September 20, 2011 8:12 pm

    22Tokyo,

More prayers for you guys in Japan. My hula sister’s son is there teaching English, as well as my cousin. Hope the flooding isn’t devastating.

    Stay safe!

    #248,

PAC-12 is not expanding tonight or even this week. You can take that to the bank.

  245. 22Tokyo September 20, 2011 8:17 pm

Thanks Slugger….it’s beginning to get nasty here….

  246. kev-1 September 20, 2011 8:18 pm

    #250 okay, next week then.

lol . . . just messing. Its just hard to believe anything with this conference talk. Everything is so darn secretive in college football. Just ask JJ . . . ooops

  247. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:20 pm

re: Coach Mack Upset on Call the Coach.

From what I read from another site…Mack got upset because some caller commented on how he shouldn’t mislead people saying UC-Davis is some powerful/giant killing team.

  248. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 8:21 pm

    kev-1,

JJ secret was pretty well kept. Impressive imo.

  249. rainbowfan September 20, 2011 8:33 pm

    #253, thanks.

I heard some of the coach’s answer, he said something like he,the coach, will say whatever he wants to say. That the caller must have never played football before. That his team doesn’t care who they play, they only are playing football jerseys on the other side or something. He was really ticked off – seemed like he was going to swear.

It seems UH really underestimated UNLV as did ALL the prognosticators.

  250. kev-1 September 20, 2011 8:34 pm

#254 . . . totally agree. I actually just found out a couple weeks ago from reading an article about SMU that it was JJ that expressed interest. Here I thought the secret was the other way around.

  251. Hawaiianbod September 20, 2011 8:39 pm

iwonder – yeah, caller said Coach Mac shouldn’t make UC Davis out to be world beaters. Beating Stanford three years ago has no bearing on this year’s team. That’s when Coach Mac went Off, telling the caller to coach his own team, don’t listen to his show, etc. It was funny! (The will replay it Wednesday, 1420 am, 1 p.m.)00

  252. Hawaiianbod September 20, 2011 8:41 pm

    #257,

I didn’t hear the show…but Coach’s remarks don’t seem to relate to the callers comments on UC Davis. Did the caller say something else offensive to him to rile him up?

We got back from Las Vegas a few hours ago. It was an enjoyable trip except for the game! It was a pleasure to meet the other Tsaikos at the Fiesta Henderson tailgate party. A special thank you to SteveM for the hospitality and the introductions. Also to Liz for the Pez dispenser and the Warrior stickers and the good conversation. Also it was nice to talk to Izzy and to WaFan about Washington where my son recently graduated from school The Tsaikos are a great bunch !

al, not going say much about planning travel for da warriors cause they have their own travel dept. what i was confused about how the coaches say that they won’t do back to back travel in the future because it is hard, but yet they extend their stay by one more day. still scratching!!!

  276. whitey September 20, 2011 10:19 pm

i wonda how much the raiders pay for their charter flights with hawaiian. know not cheap, but just curious.

al, not sure, but i think hawaiian is doing only the raiders this year. we’ve talked about this charter business for da warriors, but you have more knowledge than me about why they no like charter. UH has their reasons, but imho they are too locked in that they don’t know how to make it work.

Not sure why UH wouldn’t be able to charter flights.

It’s not like they only get their schedule 2 weeks before the start of football season.

As Tim Gunn would say “Make it Work, Make it Work.”

  301. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 20, 2011 11:11 pm

Is it true that Darius Bright will be replaced at wideout? Also Tank will defend the short side and Edwards will defend the wide side.

Was this stated by Mack on the show tonight?

  302. A-joe September 20, 2011 11:25 pm

Charter flights worked well with Aloha but not with Hawaiian. Hawaiian doesn’t have enough planes to take out of circulation and dedicate to another chartered route.

As for direct routes to destinations already serviced by Hawaiian, (Vegas, Seattle, SF…) it makes more economical sense to simply fly on a regular flight rather than a chartered plane.

    But,

Other schools have chartered larger planes to Hawaii. Extra seats aboard are then sold at a premium to boosters to raise money and offset the team’s travel costs. Might work for us at an LV game, but not to other destinations like Boise, or Wyoming.

Anyone up for a direct flight into beautiful, Las Cruces?

In ’07 we tried to arrange for a charter flight to new Orleans. We talked with Omni and ATA. Both gave us the same info. To charter a flight, we needed to:

-Be a legitimate group or organization. A high school band or a church group would qualify. Not 350 of your closest friends.

-We could not make a charter flight, turn around try to resell the seats.

-We needed ground transportation available to and from the airport and hotels for all passengers.

-We had to give Omni and ATA a minimum 90 days notice on travel. They would in turn have to clear the route and time with the FAA. That in itself killed the buzz on the whole idea. =(

Someday, though. Someday we going charter a flight for the Tsaikos. =)

Glad you remembered what JD said about the charters. Hope Stretch put in his suggestion to Hawaiian about adding an extra flight for FB gamedays. That would be a winnah for the neighbor isles, Hawaiian Air and UH.

K, night all… Mom goes to LV tomorrow morning & I’m the taxi. Missing practice again.

  315. Kevin September 21, 2011 12:20 am

RE: NIKE POSSIBLY PURCHASING UNDER ARMOUR

Personal preference aside, it just worries me simply because Nike said the UH product was worth LESS than what eventually Under Armour was willing to give UH.

So I don’t think it’s out of place for me to have some concern with regards to how UH programs like football and particularly softball will be effected should this actually happen.

The one positive as mentioned in the article is Nike’s global reach and advertisement dollars and while the article ASSUMES UA will still have most of control, still….

So if it all goes down, to me there is room for concern when the parent company tells UH to their face that that are worth less than what their subsidiary ends up offering them.

I mean who’s to say that someone at Nike will review UA contracts with all the schools and they decide, “oh wait, yeah…. it’s Hawaii so let’s dumb this deal down a bit here”… I mean like I said, THEY DID IT TO US BEFORE AND WE SHOWED NIKE THE DOOR AND RIGHTFULLY SO AS WE FOUND SOMEONE THAT THOUGHT UH WAS WORTH MORE THAN A FEW TABLE SCRAPS.
