Cool times

By Stephen Tsai on October 27, 2011

LEWISTON — The Warriors had a brisk practice this afternoon at Lewiston High School, where the mercury was in the low 50s. The forecast called for the 40s, so it was considered to be somewhat balmy, in comparison. Still, several players wore attachable pouches to keep their hands warm between plays. It won’t be a problem for Saturday’s game. “We’re gonna be playing indoors,” defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu said of the game in the Kibbie Dome, where the Warriors will […]

Chun makes travel squad

By Stephen Tsai on October 26, 2011

Talk about timely kicks. Kenton Chun, who did not practice Tuesday because of tendinitis in his left  (non-kicking) knee, made several PATs without a miss today to earn a berth on the travel roster. The Warriors, scheduled to depart this afternoon, decided to wait until the final drill of practice to make a decision. Chun will handle PATs and field-goal attempts up to 40 yards. Tyler Hadden will handle kickoffs and long-range field-goal tries. • While punt returner Scott Harding […]

Tuesday report

By Stephen Tsai on October 25, 2011

• Left wideout Allen Sampson said he will undergo surgery in two weeks after the swelling recedes in his right knee. He suffered a torn ACL while making a non-contact cut against New Mexico State. • Trevor Davis and Darius Bright practiced at left wideout today. • Royce Pollard, who did not practice last week because of a tight right hamstring, worked out with the first unit today. He said his hamstring is fine. • Linebackers Corey Paredes and Aaron […]

Sampson has ACL injury

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2011

Starting left wideout Allen Sampson might miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with an ACL injury. He suffered the injury in the first half against New Mexico State Saturday. Head coach Greg McMackin indicated that freshman Trevor Davis, who made his UH debut Saturday, would start against Idaho. Left wideout Darius Bright has been suffering from a turf toe on his right foot and pain in his left foot. Davis will “probably be the starter this week,” […]

Sunday thoughts

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2011

It wasn’t pretty, but football games aren’t beauty contests, and now a week after a doomsday feel, the Warriors are back in the WAC race. Nevada is 2-0. Hawaii, LaTech, San Jose State and Fresno State are tied at 2-1. And the Warriors’ next two games are against the only teams with no WAC victories — Idaho (0-3) and Utah State (0-2). • There has to be correlation between the Warriors’ slow starts and the long wait between the end of […]

Game day: New Mexico State

By Stephen Tsai on October 22, 2011

It’s another must-win game for the Warriors, who are playing at Aloha Stadium for the first time in 28 days. (Yes, a UH supporter could have completed a rehab stint between home games.) The availability of NMSU quarterback Matt Christian (left clavicle) and UH right wideout Royce Pollard  (right hamstring) is in question, and that will impact defensive strategies. The Warriors, who have blitzed eight and 10 times the past two games, are expected to amp up the pressure against […]

Clear eyes, full calendar

By Stephen Tsai on October 21, 2011

Because Ching field was used for the homecoming fair and the downpour soaked the grass practice field, the walk-through was conducted in the Warrior Dome (Klum Gym): * * * * * * Despite the rain, there was a nice turnout for the homecoming fair (which led to the volleyball match, which led to the introduction of the basketball teams): * * * * * This week, the Warriors concentrated most of the important drills earlier in practice to enable […]

Tossing away an opportunity

By Stephen Tsai on October 20, 2011

Within the next two weeks, former UH quarterback Tim Chang’s NCAA record for most career passing yards will be surpassed. It was a record that, like Chang himself, went largely unappreciated by his home state. For some reason, Chang’s abilities and accomplishments were never embraced. He has been characterized as being too soft — a ridiculous assessment given the sport’s violent nature. Some snarky critics note that Chang also holds the career record for interceptions. But for every pick, he […]
