Sampson has ACL injury

Starting left wideout Allen Sampson might miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with an ACL injury. He suffered the injury in the first half against New Mexico State Saturday. Head coach Greg McMackin indicated that freshman Trevor Davis, who made his UH debut Saturday, would start against Idaho. Left wideout Darius Bright has been suffering from a turf toe on his right foot and pain in his left foot.

Davis will “probably be the starter this week,” McMackin said. “He’s the next guy up.”

Linebacker Aaron Brown was diagnosed with a bone bruise of his left knee. He will play against Idaho.

The Warriors will review videos of the New Mexico State game this morning, then undergo conditioning drills this afternoon. They will implement the strategies they will use against Idaho during tomorrow’s practice. The Warriors depart Wednesday afternoon.

I think that Trevor Davis will do a good job–he won’t be perfect with all of his routes and reads but he’ll give the Warriors a good threat and make some plays.

It is very unfortunate that Sampson and Bright are hurt, but that is why recruiting has to bring in more players each year to get the depth the team needs at all positions. Every college football team has a ton of injuries now, but UH’s injuries were unluckily at positions with limited experience such as WR.

  16. Garret October 24, 2011 7:10 am

For those criticizing Mack for not playing Trevor Davis earlier, it is quite likely that a true freshman wouldn’t be ready to start the season. After half of the season has passed, Davis may be ready to be a significant contributor…but that is not proof that he was ready earlier in the season.

It should also be pointed out that using Davis to criticize the coaches neglects how the coaches should be praised for recruiting Davis.

  17. Garret October 24, 2011 7:14 am

Wow, if the NCAA increases the stipend for all scholarship athletes to $2k/month, that will be a significant increase for UHAD’s budget. I think I read that UH scholarship athletes get $1k/month in stipend, so this is an extra $1k/month for every athlete on scholarship. Some conferences could decide to stay at $1k/month and others can go to $2k/month…which would end up creating divisions in D-IA football and other sports.

“This week, I’ll be asking the board to support a proposal to allow conferences — not mandate anyone, but allow conferences, not individual institutions — to increase the value of an athletic grant in aid to more closely approach the full cost of attendance,” Emmert said.

“We are going to create a model that would allow — probably … up to $2,000 in addition to” tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies.

Some people might mock, Moscow, ID . but in all seriousness it is one of the coolest college towns around. Not many places of higher education have frat houses on a golf course

  19. Garret October 24, 2011 7:15 am

Changing scholarships to multi-year instead of year-by-year would also have great impact in some situations.

Emmert said he’ll also ask the board to allow colleges and universities to provide multiyear grants, instead of year-to-year scholarships.

  30. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 24, 2011 8:16 am

    Bryson,

No comparison between JJ and Mack. It’s as Tomey would say “apples and oranges”.

If you must though, JJ was far superior as he transformed our program with FAR LESS institutional support, resources, budgets, facilities etc.

He also did things that took incredible creativity and a lot of brass balls to do. He changed (agree with or not) the culture and the identity of UH football. He put UH on the national radar.

No sense comparing the 2 coaches because there is no comparison. JJ is on an entirely different level than Mack.

  31. Bryson October 24, 2011 8:24 am

#30:I agree with JJ and Mack being on different levels…but it took JJ until his final year to take us to the promised land…Mack is in his fourth there is no crystal ball that predicts what may happen if Mack is given an extension but yes at this point JJ did more with less…

Man I am stoked about Joey Iosefa. That guy is the real deal. He is consistently breaking first contact tacklers and I am very impressed with his running style. I hope in the off season he picks up more speed (not saying he’s slow but always can get faster) and keeps his weight where it is. If he does, Hawaii will be a place for openings on 2nd team running backs for the next 3 years. I am very excited for the future with this Sol’e.

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid October 24, 2011 8:50 am

That Aggie QB deserves credit for his gritty play, inspite of injuries.

I was surprised to find out that our own Sterling Jackson was playing with TWO subluxed shoulders. That takes heart.

Here’s hoping tha A. Brown and Sampson are healed up quick.

Jackson and Iosefa are a delight to watch. Makes you wish we could use a two back set .

  40. Old School Dave October 24, 2011 8:50 am

Props to UH running backs coach Brian Smith. You can see improvement in the running back production with each game as Iosefa and Jackson continue to develop. I think as the running game improves, so will the passing attack.

  41. Stephen Tsai October 24, 2011 8:53 am

I think UH should scrap the one-size-fits-all tuition format for undergraduates.

β€’ Tuition should correlate to the amount of money you can earn in your field. Pre-med and engineering majors should pay a higher tuition rate. Journalism majors should pay $120 a semester.

β€’ Business majors should follow the Amway scale. Sign up four students, your tuition is free. And student loans should be like mortgage loans, where you end up paying three times what you borrow. Oh, wait. That already is happening.

β€’ And if you’re a sociology major, part of your graduation requirement is to perform community service.

  42. markazulu October 24, 2011 8:55 am

Mac has shown signs of brilliance! But in the first 4 years of his contract as has been during the Mcmackin year is a lack of CONSISTENCY! AN that as a fan IS KILLING ME But I still cheer for the home team. But if you start comparing our program is still progressing June Jones though in his final year all that SUCCESS kinda lift the bar an Mac in order to get people over June has to 1. Win a Bowl Game 2. Produce a WINNING team year in an year out 3. Maybe take us to another BCS game an actually compete. The thing is year in an year out in OUR FINAL GAME we get blown out on National TV and as a fan that sucks donkeys thats how you remember the season like last year top 25 blew out people sour lost to Colorado, USC & we got blown out by Boise but we figured a basic home game an we end up losing to Tulsa it was basically Greg Salas v.s. Tulsa. June Jones always had his team prepared for the bowl games except for Sugar Bowl never got blown out an I think thats why despite the shortcomings in seasons that final bowl game got that bitter taste out. While Mac losing the final game in such a fashion it kills all momentum from ND, Wisconsin, Tulsa. Under June Jones in 2004 we got blown out from Fresno ST, Boise ST on National TV an we lost in our first game to a DIVISION 2 team! Yet 4 wins in a row later an a bowl win people forgot about it! Yet in 2010 Under Mac we beat a ranked Nevada team that beat Boise at home later on, we blow out almost everyone except Boise in the Wac, Win a share of the Wac Title is all taken away as soon as that Tulsa Loss. I think June Jones always left us with a taste of Victory while under Mac we always tasted bitter defeat. Now I think coaching style their is no comparing their both totally opposite. I hope success for Mac an honestly i think he’s done a great job besides the bowl game losses.

    Go Warriors

  43. Stephen Tsai October 24, 2011 8:56 am

Subluxations are painful because the joint can pop out again at any time.

Anthony Carter played his entire senior basketball season despite a suxluxed left (non-shooting) shoulder. He incurred the injury when he was bumped by that walk-on they used to call “Rudy.”

Observation of UH Football from family and friends on the continent (all UH fans):

They play with a lot of heart and emotion, but don’t have enough talented players to compete with BCS schools.

Proud of their culture and like to dance (the haka).

They play tough at home, but usually play poorly on the continent (this perception still persists).

Intensity level not constant – seem too easy going at times, lack a sense of urgency.

Get the most from their players, especially walk-ons, but perhaps need to increase their mainland recruiting more.

Empty stadium or less fans from decades past (based on national TV broadcasts).

  47. markazulu October 24, 2011 9:15 am

Empty Stadium an less fans IS ALL ON THE FANS! But I agree nobody wants to watch their team lose but yet I see teams like Syracuse an Vanderbelt having sell outs with 2-6 records. Its really upsetting its like people take no pride in our team an in 07 just cheered because of the national success an not because they were a fan of the team. But I agree with everything you say to a degree.

  48. Old Diver October 24, 2011 9:17 am

I didn’t see the replay but at the game it appeared Aaron Brown was blocked on his left knee by one linemen while being hit high on his right shoulder by another linemen. I don’t know if thats considered dirty but I hope he is ok.

  49. madeinhawaii October 24, 2011 9:24 am

Actually an empty stadium is all by design. With PPV, UH makes as much money as having a full stadium each game. So, if Hawaii is willing to give up the Pro Bowl, they could do with a smaller stadium… that is, if PPV continues through the MWC era and beyond.

  50. madeinhawaii October 24, 2011 9:32 am

If UH is able to continue to provide PPV AND if Hawaii is willing to kiss the Pro Bowl away, what they can do is design a 30-35K seater stadium to which more seats could be added in the future, if deemed necessary. That way, you will always look like you have a full house, cut building and maintenance costs, and be able to whole-heartedly promote PPV without conflict of purpose and intent. More businesses will probably be interested in PPV knowing that more people will be looking for game venues to select from. The Warriors will always feel like they are playing to a full house because the stadium will always be more than 2/3 full.

  51. uhfan09 October 24, 2011 9:35 am

Does anyone think its time to change the special teams coach i would say his name but it hurts too much.

  54. Old School Dave October 24, 2011 10:16 am

    Eliminate PPV.

Eliminated alcohol sales and consumption (ouch!!) Don’t wait for someone to be killed or permanently maimed (along with millions $$ from a lawsuit) due to an alcohol fueled brawl in the stadium or parking lot

Build a 40K-50K stadium, like Utah’s Rice Eccles. Cut costs by having bleacher style seats, with premium (existing at Aloha) seats between the 30 yard lines, along with luxury boxes. Oh, my aching okole – but for the betterment of the UH football program.

  59. al October 24, 2011 10:27 am

    old school dave…

i think having bleachers only with no backs nor designated “my seat” spacings would keep more folks away. esecially the older guys (like me).

the other week i sat amongst the many at the spartan stadium on bench seats (alum) by the second quarter i could feel the hurt already. yes, my okole was sore and would have paid big bucks for a padded cushion (which was a missed opportunity to increase revenue).

without the seat backs to lean back upon the discomfort got even worst.

  60. al October 24, 2011 10:30 am

    ppv will never go away.

the stadium could be filled. we’ve filled it before in 2006-07 inspite of a bump in ppv viewership.

just got to get out there.

  61. al October 24, 2011 10:32 am

    build it once.

do it right the first time.

build half a stadium now with plans to add on will cost twice as much in the future.

  62. jeezy33 October 24, 2011 10:34 am

    Garrett,

The knock isn’t against Mack deciding to burn Davis redshirt.

It is the fact he went on air to say he is one of our best WRs we have and if that is true, it shouldn’t take 7 games into the season before he see’s any action. There were definitely games where our WRs weren’t performing good enough and sometimes they need a sit on a bench to realize they need to step it up. Would have been perfect to get Davis reps earlier on when our WRs were dropping passes and fumbling the football.

You don’t see other programs redshirting guys that should be playing right away.

The fact that he is starting next week shows it was worth burning his redshirt.

But if it was back to backing up Pollard, then I would say burning his redshirt didn’t make sense.

  63. Old School Dave October 24, 2011 10:36 am

Al: I hear you. My back and okole gets sore just sitting in a regular chair. Maybe the makules can spring for those premium seats with the backrest (between the 30 yd lines). I’ve seen some stadiums with bleecher seats with a long backrest.

Just thinking along the lines of cost saving measures should they consider building another stadium.

  64. al October 24, 2011 10:39 am

attendance is not just because we are fluttering around the .500 mark.

and i don’t buy the fact that the economy has anything to do with it.

i believe that we need to have a well oiled juggernaut of a football program.

when we can achieve that on campus with all of facilities up to snuff,

when we can have upper campus run the lower campus efficiently,

when we can have lower campus minister the resources from the upper campus efficiently,

when we can have the staff to manage, coach, and promote efficiently,

then we may have that well oiled and fine tuned product that everyone will not only be proud to be a part of but will participate by attending and contributing to the continued efforts to become top notch.

    …nuff said

Regarding the Mack – JJ debate, I’m guilty of doing that too, especially when I get fired up. Of course, I usually regret it later. In reality, its not fair to compare Mack to JJ. So I apologize for being one of those that admittedly does that from time to time.

But for me, in response to Brysons #31 . . . it is more of an argument of how many steps back we have seemed to have taken since JJ left. It was noted that JJ didn’t get us to the “promise land” until his last year. I think what some fans look at is the fact that Mack came in at the height of the program with more money, more resources, and a roster of talented players. What we have done since has been decent and respectable, but possibly not up the expectations that some fans had.

Now is that fair to Mack? Maybe not. But I think that is where many people come from with their comparisons.

That said, I have never called for Mack to be fired. I think the most I have said is that they not rush into his extension. But that was before he offered to take less. As of right now, I’ll hold my judgment until I see what happens the rest of the season. This team still has a shot to reach its goals. So let’s not call for the coach’s head just yet.

  69. kev-1 October 24, 2011 10:48 am

And some people frequently comment that those of us with criticism aren’t true fans or disguise ourselves as fans. That is not true, and I definitely don’t come from a bad place when I offer my opinion. I am and will always be a UH fan.

  70. d1shima October 24, 2011 10:51 am

One issue with bleacher seating is encroachment issues.

Those who date back to Termite Palace days will understand…for the young’uns, think issues similar to parking and tailgating outside the stadium. (in spite of mgmt efforts to regulate it these past two games)

“Packers coach Mike McCarthy said today rookie running back Alex Green will be lost for the season with a knee injury he suffered Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

McCarthy said it will take about seven to 10 days for Green’s knee to β€œsettle down” before determining the next step, which will likely involve surgery.

McCarthy said he and General Manager Ted Thompson are looking at options for replacing Green on the roster.”

Others have mentioned this before and may become a more attractive alternative to joining the MWC in football only.

With all the jockying for position by conferences, including the MWC, and potentially MWC losing the so-called upper crust teams, why not stay in the WAC for football only? Benson already offered this option to UH, but it was rejected; but this was before all the upheaval. Is there a “drop-dead” clause or period of time that UH can exercise this option? TCU left the Big East even before becoming a member.

Seems competition is getting better – witness SJSU, Utah St, NMSU. Drop LaTech to Conference USA.

UH pays no football “travel expenses”, keeps PPV $$$, and keeps their WAC allotment.

Unlikely that the MWC becoming an AQ conference if Boise St and Air Force leaves. Hawaii, Nevada, and Fresno cannot make-up the BCS points for the aforementioned.

Bring in San Diego St and UNLV for football only and keep the 2 Texas schools.

Is this a valid option for UH to consider? I believe so considering all the potential changes in the wind. If so, begin the planning now; don’t wait for tomorrow.

As for the “super conference” ( MWC and Conf USA ), seems that Thompson is already setting up Hawaii to pay for all football travel expenses.

Sorry to learn about Alex Green’s injury. Hope his recovery will go smoothly. 3 things are looking up for Green however. If the Packers win a 2nd consecutive Super Bowl, Green will:

    1) Get a full share of the Super Bowl winning team even though he is in injured reserve.

    2) He will surely get a Super Bowl ring. And…..

    3) He will be included in the team picture.

    That’s pretty good.

Have any of you practiced the “lower/restructure your expectation” drill?

I’ve been doing it each week and my neck and shoulders haven’t felt better in years!

It will help you understand that in my any ways, UH football is an overachiever….that’s right, OVER achiever. Given the amount of $$$ spent on football, when compared to other schools of similar budgets — we do pretty damn good! We consistently have a winning team and consistently do a lot….with less. We do have a national brand, not because of football, but because of “Hawaii” associated with football. Our state is a national brand.

For you fans struggling with the “disappointing” season, I say…..re-structure your expectations. I’ve done so and I feel great. Best of all, it was free. Hawaii bowl is a pretty good reaching point. Co-champs again…maybe. But that’s about it. Blue chip recruits? Far and few. But we’ll get a one or two each year. We lose Mo next year. No, Graves is not better…and yes, there will be a drop off. Tough schedule and new conference — bowl expectation is not a gimmie. We win some, we lose some. And so goes life as a Warrior football fan.

I’m in a different place now. Got nothing but love for my Warriors. Weekend and week out. Thank you UNLV. Thank you San Jose. I’m a better fan because of your victories! I will never revert back to my old ways……for now ;).

  102. Bowwar October 24, 2011 1:09 pm

There is no comparison between June Jones and Greg McMackin, as they both brought different things to the table…June’s biggest contribution was “changing the culture” of Warrior football (no more rainbows) and bringing a productive “offensive” package that fans would enjoy…The downside was the perceived “arrogance” that evolved around the program and the lousy way he left Hawaii…

Mack’s history is still “open”, but he has brought great coaches to his staff and has made the Warrior program more “approachable” to the community. His sincerity and grit cannot be denied…He’s very honest and likeable guy if you ever get to meet him, let’s hope it translates to “wins vs. losses”, as you gotta cheer for the guy.

Or, will Tomey elect to go with Dunnachie to kickoff, field goal, and PAT?

I like the Neiro option best!

  105. Stretch October 24, 2011 1:26 pm

If the team leaves on Wednesday, does that mean they are going to have a “full” practice Thursday in Idaho somewhere, then a walk thru in the dome on Friday?? It’s not hard to get to Idaho.

Another option is to leave on Thursday afternoon after a full team practice and arrive somewhere on the west coast and overnight there. Friday morning, take a flight to Pullman, then drive over to Moscow for a walk thru. I don’t think the time change will be too much of a factor with game being 11am Hawaii time.

I just think they are giving up one extra day of a full practice (and school) by leaving Wednesday. Having a practice on the mainland with only the traveling squad is not ideal.

  108. madeinhawaii October 24, 2011 1:43 pm

    808bowler:

There isn’t a passing QB in the country who wouldn’t struggle without good receivers. That’s why rookies like Salas and Pilares get playing time.. why Davonne makes the $$. It’s too bad, really, for Moniz, that is.

  109. Buffoman October 24, 2011 1:45 pm

I do not believe that many who write here would argue that Mack comes across as a nice guy, has made in roads with local coaches, has done much to prepare the young men academically and could probably be here for a long time. I believe that what is being questioned are:

    1. Is the compensation justified with regard to all results: on the field and in the classroom and community. It appears that he has done very well in one area, where few in any would argue but not in the other, which elicits numerous point of view,

    2. As fans are we/you happy that as one of the highest paid officials in the State and on of the highest paid amongst his WAC peers with the total return on investment.

If we are happy with #2 there should be no one unhappy that year-after-year we wind up just below being the best in the conference, in our own Bowl and unranked in the top 25. We’re just happy that he’s approachable, gets our young men to graduate, is friendly with local coaches and from time-to-time we will keep a 2-3 star player from Hawaii from leaving.

#107 – me and this was based on the fact that all the teams UH were to play had “new” QBs.

my downfall was not anticipating how good the replacement QBs would be – Jenkins was a surprise at Udub as was the UNLV QB – LaTech has a good frosh with a lot of upside – SJSU did well as did NAMSU (Christian). hear that Reno’s QB is very impressive – very little drop off from Kapernick or just as good or better. I dunno about Idaho, but Utah St QB impressed me against Auburn.

seems the new WAC QBs are in the groove to a brighter future – now all they gottsa do is win the OOC games and increase their rating.

Ya I know he would struggle but 7 games in I was hoping he would have built good chemistry.

Perhaps, if the same 4 Receivers had been together since Day 1 of training camp.

  115. ge October 24, 2011 2:16 pm

Is Mouse Davis still on the coaching staff?

Haven’t heard anything written about him since last year. He was instrumental last year in teaching the receivers the philosophies and nuances of the run and shoot.

Coach Nick Rolovich is doing a great job adding the pistol formation and establishing a running game. Team needs to have a running game to keep the defense honest.

  116. kev-1 October 24, 2011 2:19 pm

Obviously the departure of Salas, Pilares, and Green are responsible for the drop off. But you always hope you have guys waiting in the wing to get their shot. That’s what those guys did when they got theres, and I think that is what has not really happened to the level that most expect.

I disagree, however, that our recievers have not answered the call. Pollard has overcome a slow start to be the stud of the receiving corps, Stutz II has had flashes and has improved, Clapp has come out of no where to be Mr. Reliable, Sampson has also recently impressed too. Not to mention that Davis came in and made a pretty spectacular catch on his second play of his career. Receivers that people were thinking were going to light it up this year were Bright and Ostrowski, but they have both been hampered by nagging injuries. So, I think we are okay at receiver.

  117. WarriorNY October 24, 2011 2:19 pm

Next year’s receiving corps will be Stutz, Davis, a healthy Bright, Sampson or Clapp… Graves will have been in the system for 3 years… Our D is young. O-line is young… 2012 and 2013 seasons seem to be shaping up really well… Why haven’t we extended Mack’s contract? Some people are just so short-sighted.

109: Buffoman – We gotta pay what the “market bares” if we want good and solid coaches. Mac was “offered” the salary he is being paid because that is what the Market required…Afterall, didn’t we lose JJ (to a certain degree) because we refused to offer a raise till it was too late? So, we panicked and offered Mac the same amount we would have offered JJ. Is that Mac’s fault???

However, economic times have changed and many coaches have been asked to take a drop in pay (e.g. Pat Hill) due to the poor economy and rising costs. I think Mac has been understanding and has taken a requisite reduction in pay. In current negotiations for renewal, Mac has offered to take a drop in salary to $850K in exchange for increased pay for his assistants. I don’t think this is an “unreasonable” request and given our budget improvements, I think the “powers on upper campus” should work out an extension for Mac.

Taking ST’s position, if you don’t want Mac, then tell him so and start looking for a new coach…Good Luck!!! However, if you agree that Mac has improved the overall performance of the football program “on and off” the field, then this should be a “no-brainer.”

Of course, being a “no-brainer” says alot about the idiots on upper campus…They’re really messing up on contracts with both Gib and Mac.

122: No arguement. It is not Mack’s fault that UH “knee jerked” a number when seeking his services. I believe that many of the bloggers here are voicing an opinion as to whether that level of compensation is justified given the results, the economy and other positive and negative factors.

Could we get better? No one really knows. We got Nash. And he was of quality personality and character. He could not bring to the floor what was desired. We also got Von Appen. JJ proved the myth that you cannot recruit to Hawaii, he also stated that he would get UH to be ranked in the top 25. But he did come across aloof and he did not go and sit with local coaches. So, it does boil down to what makes ecnomic, social, academic and politically correct decision making. Easy (sarcasm).

Bess, Grice-Mullins, Pilares, Salas = produced Y.A.C. also. TONS of it. Helped make Colt and Moniz looked REALLY good in addition to their own merits.

Was concerned about YAC in 2008 and again prior to this season as well.

Only now we are seeing the fruits of our running game potential. The next two game sin Moscow and at home against USU are two good chances to exploit the other’s team’s running game defense. I think we can run them both over.

  130. kev-1 October 24, 2011 3:10 pm

Kevin . . . I think this team needs to run over a couple of teams in a row to build confidence. Even thought they put up a lot against New Mexico State, I get the feeling, and they have even indicated, that they could have played better. A couple of blowouts would do a lot for the confidence of the team. Maybe that’s all they need.

  134. Kevin October 24, 2011 3:25 pm

Running over as in just the running game, but we still can win out the rest of the WAC for sure provided:

    -We’re prepared.

As dumb as that sounds, we have just enough talent to beat everyone in conference. It’s just coming out with the right energy and having the right mentality in the week prior to the game is where we lacked in the games we fell short. Against SJSU, it plain ole STUPID to blame ONLY the special teams game for not making a FG or getting a PAT blocked. The special teams group is off and it’s been discussed ad nauseum how and why they are off so I won’t even talk about it, but the FACT remains. Is SJSU a team we should have been behind by 13 points to after the 1st half????????????????

I REST MY CASE. Cannot blame the faulty traffic light before your office for being late to work when the alarm didn’t go off on time at home…. AGAIN, I REST MY CASE.

The continued miscues in the kicking game are NOT going to be fixed anytime soon from the consistent inconsistencies in so many areas. First was the protection, then the various fumbles and turnovers on ST, then the kickers shanking a few, then the placeholder drops it, etc…

First and foremost, come out prepared and we can win all of our conference games.

The team that went into Ruston was the team we CAN be.

NCAA Pushes for $2000 Payments for Athletes

NCAA President Mark Emmert is backing a proposal to pay $2000 more to athletes beyond what they currently obtain for tuition, fees, room and board, books, etc. He says that he expects that all of the BCS conferences will approve of the proposal.

This will only accentuage teh differences between the haves and the have nots! Of course, the BCS conferences will adopt it. Not only because they can afford it, but it will put the non-BCS schools at a distinct disadvantage because of financial considerations. Boise State opposes the proposal. The following is a quote from the article.

One university president on a later panel said he opposed the proposal. Boise State president Robert Kustra urged supporters of the plan to look at the support that Division I student athletes receive, and compare it to “the rest of our students, who are making minimum wage, collecting tips, trying to find their way into their next semester at the university … Go back and examine the life of a student athlete in intercollegiate sports in America today, and see how privileged they are to be where they are and the opportunities they have.”

Kustra also warned that the proposal will give some schools a competitive advantage over others.

“You just heard president Emmert say that some conferences will, some conferences won’t. Well gee, I wonder who will, and I wonder who won’t,” he said to laughter. “I think I know the answer to that. The haves will, and the have-nots will try — I’ll try — but many will not be able to. And so what you’re doing, then, is fueling a little bit more of this BCS/anti-BCS debate.” Bosie State belongs to the Mountain West Conference, which does not receive an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game.

  141. d1shima October 24, 2011 3:37 pm

It’s seeming more and more like that may be the theme for this season…

We lose Pollard, Moniz, Sapolu, Lefiti, Laurel, Faaumu, Leonard who all started games on offense. Don’t know where you see the improvement coming from.

Defensively, I just wanna know what you are basing your assessment on when it comes to Leslie?

I see Clay starting over him along with Luna at safety. And yes we have a ton of players to replace on D.

  145. al October 24, 2011 3:46 pm

then he’ll know what may happen to the wbb coach.

  146. WarriorNY October 24, 2011 3:46 pm

    @138

I hate to be on the side of the BCS schools but players should be paid. The way colleges profit off their “students” is mind boggling.

  147. al October 24, 2011 3:53 pm

105…but that would make it tough on our seniors citizens on our staff.

  148. madeinhawaii October 24, 2011 3:53 pm

    WarriorNY…

Paid how much? Then the battle begins and Hawaii football closes its doors.

  149. WarriorNY October 24, 2011 4:01 pm

    @148

you’re right. UH would fall hard. But at the same time should these BCS schools getting $20 mil+ for guys that are playing for on a scholarship?

  150. WarriorNY October 24, 2011 4:05 pm

    @142

We have talented players lined up behind most of the guys we’re losing (especially the skill player positions). And many of them will get game reps this year.

  151. d1shima October 24, 2011 4:10 pm

Guverzombie says he will change to improve his poll numbers.

Is he a sports fan once again?

Bad news about Sampson and Alex Green. Hope everything works out for them…

Don’t forget Miah is a Jr for football (but a Sr in bb). I’m hoping he’s healthy for basketball season.

  153. papajoe2 October 24, 2011 4:13 pm

I know we have some young guys on the Oline that are playing. Remember, Shigmatsu ia only a freshman.

Football is making money inspite of Coach Mack’s current contract. Its just that the are supporting most of the other sports at UH.

  154. IMUA HAWAII October 24, 2011 4:15 pm

Agree w/ A-House on #87. Hawaii can become the second Boise State to come through the WAC. Don’t need to be in the Pac whatever in order to get respect. MWC is gonna drill us w/ the all schools travel subsidy. Some of that $$ could be applied towards facilities/ recruiting budget/ home game promo & student promo in order to get that stadium filled.

JD, please,PLEASE, take those big payday games w/ the brand name schools! We get respect by playing them close & beating some of them as well.

  155. bigislandkurt October 24, 2011 4:17 pm

    Just as I feared. Damn.

    Po ho for Allan Sampson.

    BIK

  156. Ipu Man October 24, 2011 4:23 pm

I remeber when they tried to show football games on tv

without sports announcers, just the sound of the crowd.

Guess they were hoping to save money that way. Well,

that failed. They found out that they need “Howard Cozells”.

Football is show business. And you need hutzpah, ala

Robert Keaula… and a Rolo offense and a big Mac defense

    with “all” their teammates.

  157. Hawaiianbod October 24, 2011 4:23 pm

Can’t blame the kicking team for 6 turnovers….

    That’s right.

    NO YOU CANNOT!

Then again, it is sports talk and sometimes there is NO logic presented.

Logic sometimes takes a backseat to bias and personal preference.

#152. Did Miah get a medical redshirt year?

  166. Kevin October 24, 2011 4:46 pm

    Paying players or just compensation?

Adapting to economic times or indulgance for wins???

Anytime extra monies are alloted in any situation, there is more than enough room for bad judgement, greed, selfishness, and .. BAD JUDGEMENT, oh and did I forget to mention BAD JUDGEMENT???

The NCAA should really closely examine the potential consequences of providing a significant increase in current stipends given to student-athletes. I fully support any kind of financial boost given to student-athletes, but the degree of such a boost should be really thought out.

$2,000.00??????????? Really? What the hell are these kids eating or where the hell are they going in there spare time?

A more reasonable increase would be in the $500.00-700.00 range. Who’s reasonable food budget alone is 500.00/mo??? I eat well and I don’t come near that a month. My enterainment budget doesn’t even come close to that as well, but $2,000.00???????

STUPID and IRRESPONSIBLE by the NCAA to support that.

  167. Kevin October 24, 2011 4:50 pm

If UH were to keep in line with this proposed increase of $2,000.00 to each scholarship student-athlete, we might as well stay in the WAC as the financial loss may be equal or more devestating over a short amount of time.

  168. Shoko October 24, 2011 4:51 pm

    Starbucks can be pretty expensive…lol.

  169. jm2375 October 24, 2011 4:55 pm

Cocobean – since Miah was a grayshirt for fb, his bb clock started when he enrolled at UH, hence the difference.

  170. rainbowfan October 24, 2011 5:04 pm

I say don’t sell alcohol in the stadium at the least, as some mainland conferences don’t allow it, per Ferd’s column today. It would be good to ban the use at tailgating too.

People point out that alcohol is sold at Stan Sheriff Center and Murakami Stadium and there is no violence at those places, but there is no tailgating involved.

  171. Da Punchbowl Kid October 24, 2011 5:14 pm

    Prayers for Sampson and Green.

  172. Last Call October 24, 2011 5:15 pm

Robert Kekaula’s new name is the Cookie Monster I guess because of his voice . It started this past weekend with NMS fans then some Hawai`i fans picked it up and it seems to be sticking.

  173. 1sportsfan October 24, 2011 5:25 pm

When Mac says don’t underestimate Idaho, I think he’s referring to the greater uncertainty of his own team. Defense, in particular, hasn’t lived up to the preseason hype. Most fans, I believe, thought D was a given and the O was iffy due to a new line and receivers. Unfortunately with the proven inconsistencies every game is a challenge even though Hawaii should be favored in most.

  174. Da Punchbowl Kid October 24, 2011 5:28 pm

    Kevin,

If they’re gonna up the scholarship moneys to athletes they had better make sure that UH and the other non BCS Schools are guaranteed a share of the the pie. Somewhere in the midst of all this money grubbing and conference re-alignment, there’s supposed to be the educationtion of college athletes AND the fostering of fair play.

  175. Da Punchbowl Kid October 24, 2011 5:30 pm

    “education” that should read. Sorry.

I agree that we definitely have players on the dept chart to fill in the puka’s. It’s sad that it has to come down to a player being hurt, instead of a simple rotation to relieve the stress on the starters. I know for a fact that most injuries can be prevented by substitution. Keeping athletes stamina consistently leveled.

Sad for Sad for Samson, heal up soon.

Congrats too TD. But why does Mac hesitate to name TD his starter? Come on now! The boy can play, let’em play!

    Warriors 19 Idaho 17

    Go Warriors!

  177. Bowwar October 24, 2011 6:01 pm

  178. wowlaulau October 24, 2011 6:05 pm

I still see quite a few of the negative posters as “whiners”. They have an opinion about everthing but very little knowledge …..

  179. madeinhawaii October 24, 2011 6:05 pm

If a scholarship player takes his 2000 and spends it to treat a non scholarship player to lunch and dinner regularly, will that be a NCAA infraction?

  180. Derek October 24, 2011 6:33 pm

Hawaiianbod: You beat me to the punch. Flacco looks like Wacko. He looks so bad it is hard to believe the Ravens are in first place. He will never win a Super Bowl. Bring back Colt Brennan!

Tough deal for Allen Sampson. Hope he recovers quickly and fully healed for spring practice. When somebody goes down, somebody else needs to step up and get the job done. Nobody on the other teams are feeling sorry for us. They have their own problems too. If we are a true team the players and the coaches will rally with the remaining roster who are ready to play. Remember, we also lost Samson Anguay for the season before the opening game. He was the starting punt returner and he clearly won the job in the spring. He and Sampson and Anguay will be back next season. We also have Ellis “Island” Henderson coming in January as a grayshirt who is supposed to be big time from the state of Washington. Promise Amadi also got hurt in fall camp and is out for the season and he will be back.

We should aspire to be the best. If Boise St. can do it I don’t see why we can’t. They obviously are doing something right that we are not. There is a formula that can win consistently and it begins with the Head Coach who assembles his staff and who in turn recruit the players to fit their system. Obviously, they get players who are not highly rated, but who are under the rader a little bit. But, Boise St. does a great job of evaluating the prospects and develop them to be excellent players. Their use of several “personnel groups” to fit certain plays have started a trend in college football. I’ve been to Boise and there is nothing there, definitely no where close to Honolulu. But, they do have a great football team.

We have been in the Top 25 before, even in the top 10, and the goal is to be a top 25 team every year. If the athletic program doesn’t share that vision unanimously then we should go back to being at least back to Divsion IAA or the FCS. I for one would be very disappointed.

  194. tommui October 24, 2011 7:45 pm

There are some factors you have to consider when we play body-bag games.

Assume we play some SEC team for $1mil. Our expenses will be about $300,000 and so we net $700,000. If we play two or three of that type of game ala Fresno, while we may net about 1.4M or 2.1M, and we lose badly, our recruiting gets hurt.

Assume we play 3 such body-bag games, and in addition to losing those games, we get busted up and lose say three more games, our recruiting will even get more hurt.

Many who attend the UH games are fair-weather fans. If we get smashed, our attendance drops. (Look at the last game we had – a 3-3 record going in and we draw only 30,000 fans). None of these fair weather fans show up after a big loss – look at the attendance the next season after the Sugar Bowl game.

The teams that would pay us a million or so are not looking for a competitive team but one that they will beat handily. The chances of an upset would be slim.

  195. Pomai October 24, 2011 7:53 pm

#179 – madeinhawaii – the short answer yes.

  196. Pomai October 24, 2011 7:59 pm

If they keep this up we will see the end of college sports as we know it, it will turn into a minor league for the pros, it’s close to that already.

  197. Don Weir October 24, 2011 8:03 pm

    1. At $2000 per athlete UH will need to come up with about $500k more. Many of us remember signing on for room/books/tuition + $15 per month for misc. As I recall my scholarship check came to about $175 per month. Lucky I was a part time teamster (Local 481) during the summer/Christmas/Easter breaks.

    2. Many stadiums have instituted a two beer per order rule as well as cutting off beer and wine sales at the end of the 3rd 1/4. Qualcomm has a system where you go up to the stadium usher and make a complaint and the security comes down to take care of the issue.

No verbal abuse allowed and no physical confrontations tolerated.

  198. Pomai October 24, 2011 8:32 pm

As some of you know my nephew was hit by a handi van a few weeks ago and has been in ICU ever since with major brain injury, today the University of Hawaii Football team gave him an autographed football, I know when he wakes up and sees it he is going to be so excited. Say what you want about this “TEAM” they have a heart of gold.

Liz: Sorry to learn about Alex Green’s injury.

Every week, I follow the Packers, the Rams, the Dolphins, and the Panthers, to check on the progress of the skilled players that came out of UH. I guess I won’t have to follow the Packer’s games until next year. That’s football I guess but that’s kind of sad.

  205. Old Diver October 24, 2011 9:07 pm

Even as Boise State’s budget rises β€” up 9 percent to $30.9 million in operating expenses for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which begins Friday β€” athletic director Gene Bleymaier continues to look for more revenue.

The athletic department receives the maximum allowed by state board policy from the university β€” $2.21 million from general education funds, $346,600 in institutional support and $976,872 in gender equity support. Earlier this year, the board capped the first two at 2011 levels and the gender equity support at 2010 levels.

    Read more: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/06/28/1706753/bsu-budget-growing.html#ixzz1bm85Fvhc

I was under the impression that UH had a much larger athletic budget than Boise State. Also didn’t realize they are receiving over three million in taxpayer support. I also read somewhere else that their football budget is much larger than the Warrior’s budget. Someone posted in response to this article that Boise State has one of the worse general student body graduation rates in the country and is putting football before everything else. If true maybe Boise States example is not the one we want to follow.

  206. Haleakala October 24, 2011 9:20 pm

    Diver:

Yes, what are UH’s priorities? Money or the lack of it will put caps on the athletic budget as well as other project and admistration budgets. I do not know what the goals are for our State university of which I am an alumnus. Of course, most of us on this blog would like to have UH have the best football team out there each and every season with a lots of money in the budget for recruiting and for development of its athletic facilities. But if that happens, some other programs will have to take it on the chin. At least for Boise State though, they are known nationwide for their highly successful football program. Football has put them on the map. What is UH best known nationallly for?

  207. sean (aka pcwarrior) October 24, 2011 9:23 pm

  209. Old Diver October 24, 2011 9:43 pm

I could not afford to assemble a public relations and advertising budget for this year that would give us the coverage the football team has given us, said Boise State President Bob Kustra. If I assembled that budget, the university would go broke trying to pay for it. The football program, and the athletic program in general, is a window through which we can invite people from around the country to look at our academic programs and learn more about us. Thats absolutely invaluable……………….this is from a Boise State release concerning the impact football has on the school in December of 2006.

  210. Haleakala October 24, 2011 9:49 pm

    Diver:

So true about Boise State. They really should have a gold mine in what their football team has gotten for them. It would be great if UH could generate some positive PR on the national scene for some program – Pacific Asian relations including sports?

  211. LizKauai (macbook) October 24, 2011 9:52 pm

    Pomai-

  212. Haleakala October 24, 2011 10:04 pm

Actually the sad truth about UH is that some of their programs may be tops in the nation. Its just that most of us in the State let alone the nation don’t know about it due to poor or non-existent PR. Remember the video during one of the nation wide telecasts earlier this year during a game, where UH highlighted cheerleaders and other students to give the message that UH is cool? That was a waste of valuable TV time. They could have provided a more positive message to the nation about what our school can be capable of.

  213. Old Diver October 24, 2011 10:09 pm

If I recall the Boise St. AD resigned this summer and there is a new person there. I don’t know who it is, but Bleymair is gone because of NCAA violations in several programs including benefits to football players during the summer.

The Warriors should have no problems with motivation going to Idaho. We want payback for the loss at the hands of the Vandals 2 years ago, a game in which Rodney Bradley broke his leg. We have some bad karma this year on the road so far so it wouldn’t hurt to do a lot of praying. Some heavenly divine maybe helped Tim Tebow yesterday!!!!! I’ll take a one point win right now.

    OLD DIVER/HALEAKALA,

Guess you folks have NEVER seen these UH commercials, produced by the same ahem… people as the ad you both despised so much that featured students having fun titled “Lifestyle”.

BTW, these ads I’m posting here preceded the commercial you so hated and were disgusted by and were aired many times… ahem MANY times before dating back to a year ago and were featured during the 2010 Hawaii Bowl and our nationally televised game against Boise State.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBP6KNy2VZU

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGC3xiBQNpY&feature=related

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lhHkmJoXrc&feature=related

If such ads offends you then that is fine, but you will be disappointed to know that several PARENTS of students at UH Manoa that came from the mainland are quite pleased with the ad as it was a refreshing piece of video and media (CLASSES ALSO OFFERED AT UH MANOA) produced by the student body.

The “Lifestyle” ad that you deem such an abomination to your senses also drew quite an applause from those watching it in the Stan Sheriff Center during several Rainbow Wahine Volleyball matches and I don’t mean just the student section. I do NOT recall ANY UH ad drawing that kind of reaction before.

  218. Kekoa October 24, 2011 10:52 pm

I’m really bummed about Sampson. The team has had a real dog luck season with regard to injuries to all the others.

We’lll be at the softball game before heading on over to The Stan for the first Wahine basketball game of the season. Still haven’t received our tickiepoos yet,

Earlier on Saturday, DrDoc will be watching the Idaho game at Murphy’s while I am at a meeting although I expect to join him for the second half.

Will be at the Regents’ meeting on Wednesday out in Kapolei because I want to hear their take on the massive loss of external funding.

The UH System Fiscal 2013 budget will be submitted within the next couple of weeks. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get a copy of it, but I’ll share whatever is in it as soon as I can. Funding for Aloha Stadium comes from DaGov’s office – will find out when that will be available to the public.

One thing that is true today- different strokes for different folks.

One size does not fit all.

We will be able to find what we are looking for in everything we see.

What the kids today like is what UH is addressing in the commercials.

I like that they use real students in the production and onscreen.

I hope the school will deliver.

Nitey Nite and Tsweet Warrior Dreams!

    Haleakala, Old Diver,

The current UH commercial created by the students was meant to attract young people to enroll at UH. It’s definitely a piece that appeals to them, not necessarily old futs like us. πŸ™‚ I like that commercial. I think last year’s commercial showing students at graduation would appeal to parents. There are many pieces in the marketing of UH to the public.

    Increased enrollment = increased income

Night all! Prayers for those who need them.

    Morning, everyone!

    Prayers for your nephew, Pomai!

We definitely need this round of conference shifting to be finalized, so we can see what our options are. Would hate to go to a weak MWC, with less national exposure and mega travel subsidies. Anyways…

Heal up, Warriors! Take care of school work, and then take care of them Vandals!

  268. Garret October 25, 2011 4:24 am

I was under the impression that UH had a much larger athletic budget than Boise State. Also didn’t realize they are receiving over three million in taxpayer support.

    Old Diver,

The numbers you provided have Boise State’s Athletic Department budget for 2009-2010 at around $28 mil…and UH’s Athletic Department budget for 2009-2010 was $35 mil. That is a big difference.

Boise State’s Athletic department gets $3 mil in support…UH’s Athletic Department gets $5.74 mil in direct support from Upper Campus and $4.8 mil in indirect support, which comes out to over $10 mil in tax money. I am just going by the number that UHAD reported.

Boise State’s budget also includes construction and maintenance of facilities. If we counted in the tax dollars spent on the maintenance of Aloha Stadium and other facilities, UH’s number would be much higher.

  269. Wes'side Warrior October 25, 2011 6:02 am

Still haven’t heard anyone come up with some sort of a CoLA formula so that we can actually compare apples with apples.
