Booking coach?

By Stephen Tsai on May 25, 2012

It is no surprise OC Sports is considered the leading contender to land the UH head football coach’s television show. Oceanic Cable  has the television rights to UH sports, and its designated channel — digital 12 — is in need of supplemental programming. Hawaii News Now had served as  producer of the Coach Mack Show. * * * * * Initial plans call for offensive tackle Levi Legay, who is suffering from a back injury, to serve as a student […]

Snap decision

By Stephen Tsai on May 23, 2012

The Warriors are changing direction in pursuit of an eventual successor to long-snapper Luke Ingram, who will be a senior in the fall. The Warriors are in the process of trying to land a center/long-snapper from Japan. The prospect reportedly is 6 feet 2 and 290 pounds. The Warriors already have a commitment from another long-snapper, Grant Meersand of Mira Costa High. Cameron Chow, son of head coach Norm Chow, is a full-time teacher and basketball coach at Mira Costa. […]

By the numbers

By Stephen Tsai on May 21, 2012

The Warriors coaches are meeting today to discuss: • Recruiting. • The roster, which will be about 102 players for the start of training camp on Aug. 1. • Jersey numbers. Head coach Norm Chow, who has final say on all number assignments, said he would like to reduce the number of duplicate jersey numbers. * * * * * Chow said spending a couple of days in Baltimore (to meet with Under Armour executives) might be helpful in preparing […]

Wait ’til next year

By Stephen Tsai on May 20, 2012

Championship curses? Hardly. The fact is, the more teams there are in a sport, the longer the cycle and the smaller the opportunity for a championship. For instance, there are 32 teams in the NFL. If each took a turn winning a Super Bowl, one team would have had a 31-year drought. With multiple winners, the wait is longer. Of the 49 Super Bowls, 18 teams have won championships. The past 30 years, 10 of the 30 NBA teams and […]

Chang to join SMU

By Stephen Tsai on May 19, 2012

June Jones said this morning that former UH quarterback Timmy Chang will be joining the SMU football team as a graduate assistant. Jones, entering his fifth season as the Mustangs’ head coach,  said Chang will be working with the offense, of course, where he will be reunited with former UH coaches Dan Morrison and Wes Suan. Jones said Chang expressed an interest in coaching about a year ago. Chang recently earned a bachelor’s degree, a requirement for a GA’s job. […]

Going green

By Stephen Tsai on May 18, 2012

After meeting with Under Armour officials today, head coach Norm Chow confirmed the Warriors will be receiving new green jerseys for their home games this season. There will be few design changes to the predominantly black jerseys the Warriors wore last season. Chow said the team also will receive so-called “Wounded Warrior” uniforms that will be used for a military-themed game. Chow and athletic director Jim Donovan are in Maryland as part of Under Armour’s sponsorship meetings. Chow gave strong […]
