Moniz to AFL

Former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz departed yesterday for the mainland, where he is signed to play for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League.

Moniz will be reunited with former UH defensive back Richard Torres, who signed with the Force last week. Torres will be activated for this Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Command.

The Force (6-4) is in first place in the American Conference’s South Division.

Coaches have until the end of the month to visit the schools of prospects to meet with coaches and counselors. The Warriors sent the maximum seven coaches to visit Kamehameha Schools yesterday. Today, the seven-coach party will visit Punahou School and Waianae High.

* * * * *

This past spring training, the Warriors invited high school coaches to attend practices. It seemed one tactic made an impact: Playing music during practices. Aiea and Kalaheo blared music during their spring practices.

* * * * *

This past weekend’s burglaries at the UH athletic complexβ€” similar to the ones that occurred at the coaches’ offices last summer β€” are disturbing because the front doors were not jimmied. What’s more, according to a source, some profanity-laced notes were left at the scene.

Happy birthday to Brigatta Nakano.

  17. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:14 am

Cravens’ brother was supposed to narrow his choices to three yesterday. Instead, he will wait until June to make his cuts. Apparently Michigan and USC are at the top of his list. Scores of schools have made offers.

  18. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:15 am

Georgia Force is a good way to attract attention.

Rodney Bradley parlayed a stint there into a contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

  19. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 6:16 am

Maybe the burglaries at the athletic dept were inside jobs???? Since video cameras were installed, maybe the perps will be recognized.

  20. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:20 am

    Gigi:

    I guess that’s the assumption.

The burglars did seem familiar with the layout. The areas hit aren’t readily accessible to UH visitors.

  21. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:21 am

I thought it was worse a few years ago when somebody would rip off visiting volleyball teams during matches. Money, iPods, etc. were taken from the locker room.

Sheesh. It’s bad enough to get ripped off on the court . . .

  22. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 6:21 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Gratz to Bruddah Mo on his contract with the Georgia Force. Hope we get a chance to see him and Bruddah Richard Torres!

Good to keep da connection going between UH and local high school coaches/schools.

Disturbing news on those burglaries. How come no more video surveillance footage?

  23. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 6:21 am

Time to call Hawaii Five-0. Save the notes for DNA evidence.

  24. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 6:24 am

Mahalo, A-House! Love and aloha to da ‘ohana!

We get storms roll through here every so often. Big T-storms, etc… but they usually only last an hour or two, and blow through to the coast. Always gotta pay attention, though… listening for those sirens to go off… just in case.

  26. jm2375 May 22, 2012 6:24 am

Great story on the Wahine and the letter from the team brought tears to my eyes.

    To the haters and I-told-you-so’s:

…Coach Bob Coolen will be back and yes, he may get thrown out once or twice but always in defense of his players and the team. He gives his job more than any outsider could ever understand and inspires us to do the same. We will forever be indebted to the man who allowed us to be a part of something so much more meaningful than we ever imagined possible. …

  27. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:25 am

A few years ago at my old newspaper, a writer discovered that her car was hit in the parking lot. So she sent out a system-wide e-mail saying either the person confesses or they’ll use video from the security camera to file criminal charges.

    Somebody confessed.

The funny part was there was no actual recording tape in the cameras.

  28. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:27 am

Hey, at least I have an alibi. I was living in the bathroom the past two days.

  29. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 6:27 am

Yeah, I hope so, Gigi! Bruddah Bryant is partially responsible for my present diet/fitness kick. Talk story with him once in a while online. Would be good to talk with him in person. But I know he’ll be busy, having to learn a new playbook on top of everything else. Just hope he does well to keep his spot and possibly get looks from da big boys. You never know.

Yes, ST. I dropped 12 pounds in my first week… plus a couple of inches, combined, here and there. Second week, not as dramatic, but on a steady, positive direction.

    They barely remember Lilo.

But during several interviews with opposing players, they asked about Dog Chapman.

I’ll have little to no excuse for not seeing them in action, as they play in the arena/stadium just 7 minutes away from where we live! Can’t wait!!!

  39. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:38 am

    Wes’side:

He was telling me about that.

I get a lot of those requests, like those 90-day challenges.

  44. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 6:46 am

ST… all I can say is, this stuff is fo’ realz! I wanted to introduce it to other Tsaikos, as this is very beneficial, health-wise, for all of us. Just don’t want to come off the wrong way. I still eat mostly what I want. I have zero sweet cravings too. I just hate having to get up sometimes in the middle of the night to pee. But, what is the alternative? hahaha. Biggest change is in when I eat certain things… mainly starches. I can handle that… so far.

  45. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 6:50 am

Hahaha, Gigi! Sometimes, things just get in the way. With a couple of local boys all the way out here in Georgia, it’s our chance to show our aloha to them for what they’ve given (and continue to give) to us, our school, and our state. We’ll figure it out somehow. Not like we’re rich or anything. But I think we can scrape up some tickets once in a while.

  46. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:50 am

    WW:

So, you started two weeks ago?

  47. A-House May 22, 2012 6:54 am

    + 100 here we come!!

  48. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:56 am

I think $47 is the priciest single-game ticket for a Force home game. But you can get the SteveM ticket for $12 (nose-bleed midfield).

    Also, FREE parking.

  49. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 6:59 am

Also, alcohol is sold through the first three quarters, and there is an autograph session after every home game.

  50. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 7:00 am

Interesting that there actually had to be a rule stating that the mascot, Blu, is the only animal allowed in the building.

Is that a common thing to bring pets to games?

  51. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 7:04 am

Now two weeks plus a day and a half. Down a total of 16 pounds and nearly three total inches off… mainly from da gut. Good thing is that it stays off, even after overindulging on Mother’s Day! hahaha!

FYI… I just told him that we’re talking about weight loss here, and here’s what Bruddah Mo just messaged me to share with you guys…

“Real W8 is an all natural supplement that helps your body to balance it’s blood sugar levels. When your body has a balanced blood sugar level it’s at its peak. Your body will eliminate cravings and start to efficiently burn fat and calories.”

We’re in a private group on Facebook. I can send (Facebook) invites to any of you who want to take a look at pictures, as well read the many testimonials. All about living healthier for those we love.

WW: When you stop taking the supplement after losing all the weight you want to lose, WON’T YOU GAIN IT BACK AND THEN SOME?

That’s what happened to me after I stopped NutriSystem.

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid May 22, 2012 7:11 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! πŸ™‚

Good fo’ Mo. Hope he and Torres make a great impression.

Happy Birthday Brigatta! (The name sounds like a foreign car or pistol.)

  56. Da Punchbowl Kid May 22, 2012 7:18 am

    Wes’side Warrior –

Happy to hear bout your weight loss. What supplement are you taking? Got a link? Jes curious. I was dropping some good weight at the YMCA until surgery stopped the workouts temporarily. Going back today or tomorrow. Safeway brownies don’t help of course.

Give our best to da Force Warriors!

  57. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 7:23 am

Gigi, I hope it won’t come back. I’ve never been on a diet, per se, until now. I was hospitalized for a week, due to vertigo, several years ago, and went from 165 to 200+ in a matter of a couple of years. Being inactive due to loss of balance really did me in. Since then, I’ve tried working out, but could never break the 200# barrier… until now. For me, it’s been the compilation of several things… mainly eating healthier and being more consistent with my workouts. I don’t get those dizzy spells or feel weak and tired, as others have experienced on other diets.

I’ll ask around in the various groups, to see if people have experienced weight gain once stopping the product. In my opinion, the main thing is eating the right things at the right time. Dinner used to be our biggest meal, and then I’d go to sleep shortly after. That didn’t help. So, part of my change has been due to adjusting to a bigger lunch, and a lighter dinner. Hopefully, by maintaining these *new* habits, I won’t see a weight gain once I run out of these supplements.

So, for anyone who wants info on the weight loss stuff I’m on, please send me a message on Facebook, or an email at uofhwarriors@yahoo and I’ll send group invites to you guys. I don’t want to just send it out blindly to everyone, and have some of you upset at me for whatever reason(s). You’re under no obligation to do anything. Just gonna send a group invite to you, and you can read, view before-and-after pictures, and ask all the questions you want.

For those wanting something to google… the product is called Real W8, by Asantae.

    final cold/flu remedy…neti pot.

for years an aunty of ours would preach this ancient method to prevent, aid, and cure the common cold and influenza. go read this link.

    http://www.webmd.com/allergies/sinus-pain-pressure-11/neti-pots

after years of doing the yah, yah, number i finally did try and it does help one with allergies in particular and for other nasal congestive problems.

  63. Ipu Man May 22, 2012 8:42 am

    Da Butler did it…

  64. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 8:51 am

Sometimes, when the sinuses are just so clogged up, our neti pot couldn’t get the rinse through. We now use a squeeze-bottle version, instead of relying on gravity. Works even better, and is so easy that even our thirteen-year-old has used it a couple of times.

Don’t know what they carry out in Hawaii, but here’s what we use now:

    http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=806108&productId=806108&navAction=push&navCount=0&no_new_crumb=true#BVRRContainer

  65. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 8:54 am

Since the safes were burglarized, it had to be people who knew the combination, right? How else would these safes be opened without using dynamite?

  66. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 8:54 am

If I had cleared out my sinuses years ago, when suffering from seasonal allergies, my doctor said I could have avoided the sinusitis, which lead to an inner ear infection, which led to the vertigo I suffered. Wish I’d known then what I know now! Live and learn!

  67. madeinhawaii May 22, 2012 8:55 am

Was someone hiding in the offices when they locked up? Or was it an inside job? A disgruntled employee or athlete? Aiyah!…

  68. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 8:57 am

Suspect list = those who know how to get into the safe(s). Not a good thought!

Good morning Tsaikos!!! Hope all have a good day today.

  70. madeinhawaii May 22, 2012 9:00 am

    Wes’side Warrior:

If you are mixing your own saline solution, make sure you are using distilled or previously boiled tap water in that netti pot. Users have been known to get serious infections, even brain damage from water that was contaminated with a type of amoeba.

  71. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 9:03 am

MIH, yes, I read that people died after using neti pot due to contaminated water.

  72. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 9:03 am

Yup. We use strictly distilled water with the saline mix. No tap water for this family! Not taking any chances!

    Morning/afternoon (J)J!

  77. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 9:23 am

Even then, kids wouldn’t think to ask what “construction workers” might be doing lugging that equipment around campus late at night. Guess our coaches have homes to sleep in now, as opposed to crashing in the offices.

  79. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 9:28 am

  80. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 9:31 am

My daughter has a safe in her home. Pointless to have one, huh?

  81. tommui May 22, 2012 9:31 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I often wondered why the schools or the University do not have more alarm systems – Radio shack have (comparatively) cheap sonic alarms which can be concealed and plugs in any electric socket so that you don’t have to worry about someone cutting the main alarm system = of course they can always disable the electrical system going into the building. But the cost of any alarm system certainly would be cheaper than all the computer/laptops etc that are stolen from the school

One would imagine at that late hour, the sound of a jackhammer would be somewhat suspect …

  82. A. Ku May 22, 2012 10:05 am

Moniz is a good kid and I’m happy to hear he got a shot at extending his career. Best of luck, Mo!

  84. kawika49 May 22, 2012 10:38 am

  85. SteveM May 22, 2012 10:41 am

    Good morning everyone!

    Good luck to Moniz!

    $12 nose-bleed midfield, indeed! πŸ™‚

  86. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 10:50 am

Hope the PPV (if any) doesn’t increase in price. Last year, we paid $450 (tax and fees included).

  88. Da Punchbowl Kid May 22, 2012 11:00 am

Might need to bring them to the malls around here too… for some family souvenirs. And I bet he’s trying to get you to buy one bottle from him too.

  93. al May 22, 2012 11:45 am

    “The doors were opened easily.”

…someone has a key, someone left the door open, someone has micro-tools, someone is familar

    “The safes were jackhammered.”

…must be those new noiseless jackhammers, the campus patrol personnel are deaf, the campus patrol has apnea, someone is familiar.

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid May 22, 2012 11:47 am

Baked mushroom chicken today. Gotta be strong.

  95. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 11:50 am

Not naming suspects, but the burglars entered without breaking the door locks, went to the back where the safes are hidden in an office, and then jackhammered open the safe.

Last year, it was a drawer where some of the camp money was located.

And, let’s not forget how somebody stole some plants from Mr. A-House’s rock garden.

The people with alibis are me (bathroom), Donovan and Chow (Preakness), and the softball team (Regionals). We haven’t ruled out Dog Chapman yet.

are any of the AFL games televised or on line?

  98. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 11:55 am

    Ben A. Lurker:

That’s a good thing because the Super Bowl will be there.

Most of all, they’re retaining the game.

And, also, it goes against Cowherd’s original comments that the game was dead.

  99. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 11:56 am

We’re trying to get Wes’side to Skype the AFL games.

  100. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 11:59 am

There will be some games shown on WSB-TV, whatever that is.

Earlier in the season, there were some games on the NFL Network. I guess we’re going to have AFL tailgates at the jm2375 house.

  101. Da Punchbowl Kid May 22, 2012 12:16 pm

    Stephen,

Just to clear your name, we’ll need an picture of you holding yesterday’s copy of the SA while you were, well, you know…

  102. madeinhawaii May 22, 2012 12:17 pm

Off on a tangent… are there any statistics as to what percentage of mainland athletes who take an official trip to Hawaii actually commit to Hawaii?

  103. WarriorMojo May 22, 2012 12:23 pm

Isn’t one of the coaches living in his office or has he now found a place to stay?

  104. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 12:30 pm

Oh shoot… do I even have a Skype account? Can’t remember. Only thing I recall was that I visited the site to gather information on the how, when, why, etc. Don’t know if I went through with it or not. C’mon, bolohead… don’t fail me now! Did I write down account info somewhere? Dang it!

  105. madeinhawaii May 22, 2012 12:35 pm

I recall being sent an invitation before we bought this computer. Guess I didn’t go through with the registration for the free version. It’s definitely not on this machine. How useful is it? I seem to be kept busy with whatever I already have, at the moment.

  108. Wes'side Warrior May 22, 2012 12:40 pm

Told you guys… gotta find an establishment that broasts their chicken and turkey. That’s the only way to go!

If no video exists then why not? No alarm system?

Some one knows who did it.

  116. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 1:18 pm

Wafan: it had to be someone who already had the key to the front doors. An employee, perhaps? Janitor? Security guard?

  117. madeinhawaii May 22, 2012 1:19 pm

Unless someone knows of a good hiding place inside of the premise.. but how many doors that are normally locked were opened without being jimmied?

  118. madeinhawaii May 22, 2012 1:19 pm

When was the last time that the locks (tumblers) were changed?

  119. kawika49 May 22, 2012 1:21 pm

    Locks, never stopped a thief.

  120. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 1:24 pm

I swear by our security alarm. All of our windows and exterior doors are wired and monitored by a company off island 24/7.

Someone once removed our screen to break in but when he saw the wires on our windows, he just left.

  121. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 1:25 pm

Also, I punched a code in my alarm when some sinister guy tried to intimidate me at the front door. The cops were here within 5 minutes.

  122. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 1:28 pm

In fact, our security alarm alerted the fire dept when our smoke detector blared.

  123. wafan May 22, 2012 1:30 pm

How many keys are there to those doors? Can all of them be accounted? Easy to make duplicates if you know basic casting methods.

  124. wafan May 22, 2012 1:33 pm

  126. Shoko May 22, 2012 1:45 pm

In most cases that I’ve noticed, when it comes to inside jobs the person who has access to the premises usually are accomplices. Meaning, they are the ones that, for example, leave a door open intentionally, but do not actually take part in the crime. However they do take part in the collection. πŸ˜‰

Was wondering what the deal was with Mo. Glad to hear he’s got a job.

Mo is right in saying that insulin levels must be maintained. That requires eating 5-6 meals throughout the day. It’s when your insulin spikes that negates weight loss. I remember talking to a women who said she doesn’t know why she can’t lose weight. She exercises everyday religiously and eats one meal a day. And I told her, “Therein lies the problem.” You’re so hungry at the end of the day you tend to overeat. As such, yourt body is telling you, “Hey you idiot, if you’re going to make me starve the whole day, then the first meal you eat I’m going to turn that straight into sugar and store it as FAT…lol.

The funny thing was, I didn’t think she was overweight. Maybe she suffers from the Adonis complex like I have witnessed at my gym. You know those people. They exercise everyday and look at themselves in the mirror constantly.

Boy, didn’t mean to type so much. Okay, back to lurking!

as much as I like the Heat, I doubt they will make it to the finals.

the match up will probably be the Spurs vs. the Celtics.

If that happens, I’ll cheer for the Celtics, mainly because I can’t stand Tony Parker.

  143. Garret May 22, 2012 5:21 pm

If SDSU’s Athletic Director is correct, the rumored 4-year option that the TV networks have on the MWC TV deal is true. That could mean that the MWC’s TV money won’t increase until 2020. As a football-only member, UH will get about $1 mil or so from the TV deal…but at least they killed the money-losing mtn network so UH should be able to keep PPV.

And for those of you who wonder why Boise State and San Diego State would hold firm to their commitment, San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk laid out the financial benefits for the Aztecs. As part of the Mountain West, its share of revenue from its current TV deal is $1.2 million. That is expected to be double digits whenever the new TV contract is negotiated.

the Mountain West Conference is locked up three more years with a four-year rollover.

  144. Ben A. Lurker May 22, 2012 5:27 pm

    ST, thanks.

    re: probowl

Here’s a beaking news item up on SA by Ferd

New Orleans or Honolulu could host if there’s a 2013 Pro Bowl

Asked if New Orleans was the likely site in the event the game is held,

Goodell said, “No, I wouldn’t say that.”

They are still deciding whether to have the game.

  145. gigi-hawaii May 22, 2012 5:33 pm

Garret: I am glad that UH will be able to have PPV this year. Just hope they keep the price the same, not higher.

  146. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 5:40 pm

    Mr. Lurker:

I think everyone (except Cowherd) wants to have the game. They just want to make it look more authentic. It wouldn’t hurt to have at least one big tackle during the game.

  147. Stephen Tsai May 22, 2012 5:41 pm

One thing to know about Mel Cabang shows: Do not β€” NOT β€” go to the bathroom during his set. He will embarrass you.

  148. oldtimer808 May 22, 2012 5:53 pm

ST the Surfers used to do that too if you went to the bathroom. I think it was Al Naluai who was comedic presents with Clayton as the straight man. Al would have that hand mirror and shine it at you with the put down jabber.

  149. oldtimer808 May 22, 2012 5:54 pm

And just think The Surfers were before Mel Cabang.

  150. HawaiiMongoose May 22, 2012 6:00 pm

Garret, while it’s interesting to finally have confirmation that the CBS-MWC contract does in fact contain the four-year rollover, I doubt that provision is still enforceable. There have been other media reports saying the contract is being renegotiated, which I think is a necessary consequence of CBS having broken its commitment to operate a dedicated national network showcasing MWC sports. One report said the conference presidents are pushing for at least $2 million per school per year, so UH could see an increase.

I think the SDSU AD was only telling half of the truth because he was at the Big East conference meeting and talking to ESPN’s Big East beat reporter about why SDSU won’t go back to the MWC. So it was in his interest to paint the most negative picture possible of the MWC’s TV contract situation.

  169. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 5:58 am

ppj2 what iron did you use to score your ace…pitching wedge or 9 iron?

  170. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 5:59 am

Al hole in ones are only on par 3s not 5s.

  171. papajoe2 May 23, 2012 6:05 am

Thanks everyone for the congrats on my first hole in one. I just hope it doesn’t take another 59 years for my next one.

Kekoa and everybody else that waiting. Look on the roof cuz your drinks on on da house. (I know its an old one, but I was practicing using this line for soooo long.)

oldtimer808, I usually use a pitching wedge but it was, windy so I used a 9 iron instead and told my partners I got too much club but will swing easy.

  172. Ballpicker May 23, 2012 6:16 am

Excellent papajoe2. Been close many times but no cigar. I’ve had two eagles from the fairway though on regulation par 4.

    Go warriors

    papajoe2

I know how you feel, played golf for over 40 years before I got my first. Been a single digit for almost those 40. To top it off, I thought I hit a bad shot and looked away, never saw it go in.

  175. al May 23, 2012 6:54 am

there have been some recorded history where a hole in one was accomplished on a short par 4.

and then there is the claim to fame bny kim jong-il that he carded five holes in one in one single round shooting -38 under.

    (btw, what happened to iwwthm)
