UH camps
For the price of a new DVD — $20 — football players can receive a T-shirt, sandwich meal, refreshments and wide-ranging instruction from the Warrior coaching staff at next month’s football camps at the UH grass practice field.
The Big Man’s Camp (for linemen, tight ends and linebackers) will be held Saturday, June 9, and the Skills Camp (for quarterbacks, receivers, running backs and defensive backs) will be on June 10. Each camp is $20, and is for ages 13-17. Instruction is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
There also will be a three-day youth camp (for ages 5-12) on June 11-13. The fee for that camp is $60.
A camp for teams (ninth grade through 11th grade) will be held June 18-20. The fee is $60.
The fees cover the T-shirts, meals and insurance.
To pre-register, call (808) 956-6508.

Placekicker Edgar Castaneda, who was prepared to join the Warriors as a preferred walk-on, instead has accepted a scholarship from Sacramento State.
“It was a financial decision,” said Castaneda, who recently played at City College of San Francisco.
Tyler Hadden, who endured several ailments as a second-year freshman in 2011, will enter training camp as the No. 1 kicker. He booted a 53-yard field goal in the Warrior Bowl last month.
Kyle Niiro, a walk-on last year, will replace Castaneda on the training-camp roster.
CeeJay Santos, who will transfer to UH from Weber State, must redshirt this season.

Mahalo to our Big Island contributor for this photo of former UH head coach Bob Wagner and former Kamehameha-Hawaii principal Ninia Aldrich. They were among those honored at last week’s convocation. Wagner is retiring as the school’s athletic director.
Did we mention Wagner was hugely instrumental in the creation of Na Koa?

Happy birthday to Corie Kaimikaua.
And birthday greetings to the man who defied gravity — Allen Allen.
1st
BTW, I did get to read everything first. And if it were’nt for our MNL flight returning and now just leaving, I would be home already. Hope that child is OK.
kyle niiro if given the opportunity will open eyes…kid got a leg.
i hope they supersize the sandwich meals for the big man’s camp.
talk of meal has made me hungry.
I think that’s why there’s an hour break. Gives the players a chance to make a quick run. But . . . Don’t . . . Be . . . Late.
so why don’t you just be sean or pcwarrior?
Top 10. Good night and good morning to all. Also Keaau High School is having a Spring Game tomorrow afternoon roughly at around 345 on its practice field if anyone on the BI wants to watch some football.
Go Cougars!!!
Go Warriors!
maybe we should sell bentos?
Al:
It’s actually a good thing he identifies himself as both.
yah, that’s true unlike those who had multiple identities.
i hope cindy luis “86’s” that pest from her blog. he’s making all big body over there. maybe kifi should go over there to settle things down.
I’m fascinated by the high schools’ “spring” practices.
I drove past Kalaheo this afternoon and the Mustangs were practicing. Then I learned Kalaheo’s graduation was this past Monday.
So, are spring practices for the players or for the college recruiters?
st, do the coaches feel that our receiving corps lacks speed. reason being that they seem to going after a lot of wr’s, especially those 4.5 and under.
Al:
I don’t concern myself with other blogs.
i hope the hs coaches understand that one of their duties is to help a player explore their possibilities at the next level albeit d1, d1, d2, d3, jc and the like.
this is where darren hernandez goes out of his way for his student/athletes.
There’s a difference between offering and taking.
If you book a ticket early, you’ll have a seat on the plane. Wait too long, you go on standby.
it is better to offer than to have a wish list that sits in the waste basket.
you never know…someone will take it. (as we are in the running for a 3/4 star wr type as we speak).
like i said, if you don’t ask the homecoming queen to the prom you’ll never get the opportunity.
They’re going after players, and going after them hard, but there’s also a limited number of scholarships.
The numbers game doesn’t seem to affect that SEC coach who is offering by the bushel
we may have 18-20 scholies next year.
I always felt they should move the signing day to April.
Gives players a chance to take trips without missing games. It also gives a school a better indicator of a player’s eligibility.
I don’t think it’s that high.
Happy Trails to Coach Wagner
Happy Birthday to the BDayKinds
i guess we’ll have to do the greyshirt stuff next year. then again we could experience some “natural” attrition.
Oyasumina-Tsai…
Not to jinx anything, but I’m enjoying the recent peace here.
The best thing isn’t just the politeness. But it’s opened the way for really interesting and informative commentary the past few days.
I salute all of you.
football should have an early signing period as does the other sports. this way student/athletes and coaches can focus on their season.
btw, Al. Did I mention that I’m off for the next week?
VooDooToo, here I come! 😉
just like the old days.
d1…heading north again?
or more towards the dessert?
seems like d1 has 8 weeks of vacation per year.
He’s cleaning up, so to speak.
But he works hard, so it’s all a wash.
zzzzz
btw, the blog clock is nearly a half hour off.
Al,
Each computer i use either has Sean or Sean (aka pcwarrior). I don’t really change it. But ever since kazz changed to kevin, i decided to use my real name. No more aliases.
Mr Tsai, it has been really enjoyable reading the blog lately! I think it has to do with the return if some original members. Nice to have them back!
Congratulations and god bless to both coach wags and to Ninia..
Sean. I’ll second that… I was starting to go away from reading anything but ST’s headliners for a while. Glad to see the old Blog etiquette back. Mahalo ST.
from the last post:
Garret would this not be a NCAA violation?
Pomai,
No. For years the NCAA has said that it is okay for schools to give computers and other electronic devices to student-athletes if it benefits their *education*. iPads are being used in some places for electronic textbooks instead of hardcopy textbooks, so I’m sure that the NCAA has blessed the iPad giving.
I really dislike Colorado giving iPads just to football players. Ohio State is making good use of their Big 10 TV money by giving all student-athletes an iPad.
Did anyone notice that the MWC tried really hard to get Boise State to stay…even offering Boise State more TV money from the conference than the rest of the conference members? If TV money was based on appearances this year, BSU would get more than double the TV money than the average MWC school–and way more than UH.
Basically what this means is that the MWC offered some of UH’s TV money and some of the TV money from their other schools to be given to BSU. I’m glad that BSU declined.

Good Morning! Best wishes to former UH coach Wags! Happy birthday wishes to Corie Kaimikaua & Allen Allen!
Mahalo Al for your comment yesterday about my sons! Yeah, their good kids! They grew up soo fast! Seems like yesterday we were always at some park or gym or field for one of their games. The oldest is celebrating his 31st today and is worried about his hair greying 🙂
It appears that the Big East will wait to expand until they know how much TV money they will get. With that big question answered, a school can join with the knowledge of what they will be getting. If they had a western division that included Boise State, San Diego State, SMU, Houston, BYU, and Air Force…that would be bad for the MWC’s future TV deal.
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/may/23/big-east-western-expansion-still-works/
Wow, the conference title game will be at the school that has the best regular season record. Big East title game in Boise or San Diego?
Coach Wags….congratulations on your retirement; you did a great job at UH and you deserved better. U are loved by your supporters and Hawaii.
Good morning Garret,
I think the BigEast will dangle their bb programs as a big part of negotioation$$$$.
What do you think bout Louisville’s wanting to leave the bigeast for either acc/big12???, do u think that will happen down the road?
Maybe the proper name for the bigeast shud be changed to the Big Weast the way things are going?
I hope kids take advantage of the UH camps. Those parents who pay $500-$600 to camps that come to Hawaii and offer no exposure to colleges at all are crazy.
Are they saying that linemen, tight ends and linebackers are not skilled. 🙂 just kidding.
Happy Birthday, Corie and AA.
Congrats to Wags!
Kauai peeps- see you June 8 at KCC Fine Dining to meet and greet Coach Chow and chow down on great grinds and get a great NaKoa fix on the offseason!
Don’t miss this and remember to stay late and help clean up… Last year’s REAL fun started with the balloon pop!
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7T-soni0p_Y
Yuk yuk yuk
Garret
I’m kind of surprised these leagues didn’t try to get wink-wink TV deals before coaxing away football teams.
http://nakoa.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/2102-Meet-Coach-Kauai-Flyer.pdf
Here we go, Kauai!
I’ll throw this out there, but it would be a nice gesture for Na Koa to honor Bob Wagner.
Good morning Tsaikos.
d1, porgot whether you went or going to PNW. Enjoy and congratulations on your son’s graduation.
Morning, gang!
Happy retirement, Coach Wagner!
Happy birthday, Corie!
Happy Birthday Coach Wagner, Cone, and Allen
I remember Coach Wagner’s last UH game at Aloha Stadium. It was a poignant moment. Glad to know he was successful on the Big Island. Big aloha to the man.
Did you read in this morning’s SB that a mongoose was caught on Kauai? That is the first time ever for Kauai.
Haleakala: SA not SB. Lol
Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy retirement to Coach Wagner.
ST – only the seniors are out of school, the rest of the kids get out tomorrow.
Congrats to d1’s #2! On to the real world!
Morning/afternoon everyone!
I love that the camps are very affordable for our kids. Lots of connections can be made by this exposure and interaction between UH coaches and all the aspiring, young athletes… not to mention the continued informal mentoring that our local coaches get from the UH staff too. Win-win all the way!
We’ve gotten brochures for summer camps here in Georgia… from a discounted $240 for a week-long flute camp, all the way up to $600+ for Science and other “exploratory learning environment” camps.
I don’t care who our kicker is… as long as it’s not so much of an adventure every time that phase of the game is out on the field. Let it be automatic, please! Oh, how spoiled we got in the past!
I always liked Coach Wagner. Happy trails, Coach! Mahalo for all you’ve done for our keiki, throughout these many years! To honor his contributions with a (Na Koa) luncheon or dinner is the least we could do. The state should publicly recognize his achievements as well.
And finally, happy birthday, all you birthday peeps!!!
I think most schools use the camps to supplement the pay of coaches.
I think UH wants to use the fees to cover the cost of the food, T-shirts, insurance and … user fee. Yes, UH collects a user-fee for all events on campus. It’s not very large, but still …
Please debate.
ST, was there a user fee for the Tsaiko 2nd anniversary party at the Stan Sheriff in 2008? Thought Jim Donovan gave us the room for free.
Gigi:
Thanks for the correction. I still think of the HA and the SB.
We used their catering.
Congrats to Coach Wags on his retirement. His 92 UH team set the standard as far as winning the old WAC, going to a mainland bowl, winning it, and finishing the season in the top 20.
ST: have you ever attended a class reunion at UH? It’s an all-day affair, starting with breakfast at Kennedy Theater, speeches, lunch at the Student Center, tour of the campus (including the AD), and ending with a dinner under the stars on the Hawaii Hall lawn.
UH charged $110 per person.
I thought it was worth it.
I have a UH reunion every time I go to work. I went to UH with Alan Yonan, Lucy Oda, Dennis Oda, Mike Rovner, Mike Gordon, George Lee, Dave Reardon and Nadine Kam.
Nadine Kam? Didn’t think she was that old. Is she 50 already? Geez.
Anyway, I think it’s great that UH is reaching out into the community — with camps and reunions, etc.
Layla Kiffin, wife of USC’s head coach, will have a football clinic for women.
Entry fee?
$200!!!
Lucky you live Hawaii.
In a related matter . . .
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1175650-layla-kiffin-and-the-25-hottest-college-football-coachs-wives
Well, USC is an expensive school.
Congratulations and a Big Mahalo to Coach Wags. Your Defenses were Legendary and they set the standard at UH. Enjoy your retirement!!
Dang!-Ole Miss Coach gives out over 240 verbal offers!
what will happen if all 240 athletes accept the offers? Lol
Hey, if more than 25 accept, say your phone was hacked …
surprised it isn’t illegal.
Sooner or later the new teams entering the Big East will find out the crappy deal they’ve walked into.
In ’79, the Big East was founded by a handful of basketball dominant programs. So arrogant and powerful they were they turned down a request by Penn State to join.
The Big East eventually realized the revenue football could bring in. So in ’91 they decided to become a football conference by leveraging their established name brand and luring potential football programs in to use.
With the new influx of football TV revenue (brought in by football programs) the original basketball institutions reap in the profits while not having to do anything in return. This didn’t sit well with newcomers. This is why Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Miami, West Virginia, TCU and Virginia Tech all left. If they were getting a fair shake they all would’ve stayed.
It’s like renting an apartment with three other roommates who tell you that in return for the privilege of living in a great location with them you need to pay for all of the rent, utilities, chip in for food and do all the chores to upkeep the place. You later find out one of your roommates’ parents owns the place and they’re all living there rent free.
So basically, BSU, SDST along with Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, Houston, SMU, UCF, Memphis and Navy are being asked to help pick up the rent. In return they’ll get name recognition under the Big East brand. Meanwhile, Connecticut, Georgetown, Providence, St. Johns, Seton Hall, Villanova, DePaul and Marquette all get to sit back and have the unenviable task to decide what to do with all this free cash coming in.
What a great deal, yeah? Gotta love watching free enterprise, greed, ignorance and sheer stupidity all get into bed together. Makes for great reality TV/soap opera drama.
Boise not going…
When Ninia took the job at Kamehameha BI, Kalani was just about to enter HS and known more as a basketball and Volleyball player. Then he packed on some muscle and was a Dline stud. Too bad his career was cut short by injuries to his leg, while at UDUB. Ninia’s husband was known at our church as “da guy who played Jesus”.
Oh and happy birthday to my classmate, “The A-Bomb”
Yes ST it would be great if Na Koa honors Coach Wags for all he has done for the UH football program. It was not pono the way he was shown the door. It left a bitter taste and the next coach was a farce.
Garret, re #45, the interesting thing to me in that article was the statement that the Big East will not consider adding another western school until after its new TV deal is done, i.e. until late autumn.
There had been speculation that in the next few weeks the Big East might invite Fresno State or UNLV to join for football, so as to help Boise State land its Olympic sports in the Big West. The theory was that the Big West would be certain to invite Boise if it meant getting Fresno or UNLV Olympic sports as part of a package deal. Now that possibility is off the table.
So we’re left to wonder if Boise State will succeed in buying its way into the Big West with travel subsidies and other cash inducements. It will need support from eight of the ten conference schools to do so, and I don’t see UH voting yes…
I don’t want UH to vote Boise into the Big West unless someone can prove to me that it will be beneficial to UH. Their non-football sports are bordering mediocore and travel for UH will be a pain. Plus, if we have to pay for them for travel. Just Say No!
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Best wishes to Bob Wagner. I will never forgive the guy who fired you!
Speaking of Ninia, it’s ironic that she graduated from Aiea HS but spent her while adult life at kamehameha Schools starting as a dorm advisor at Alice Knapp Dorm a d finally ending up at kamehameha BI. I.beleive she is back on Oahu working at Kawaihao Plaza for Bishop Estate. The reason I say that is because I graduated from Kamehameha but haven’t done squat for the school except to play in the alumni golf tournaments. I guess that’s enough I suppose. Lol
Her brothers were all big and athletic. Everyone here should know Pat Richardson who played I beleive in the 70’s with C Laboy. Her other brother Neal is still in the Department and was responsible for my career at HPD..
What a story that family can tell.
Jim Donovan has fired 2 coaches, so far… No outcry.
Ballpicker: What a successful family. Would everybody be that lucky.
Correction: he fired 3 coaches.
It must be so difficult to fire someone. Think how emotionally distraught the coach must feel. JD must have nerves of steel to do that. Yes, I realize that’s his job, but still…
Can the UH football team, 120 or so of them, come to the football camp, too, with
twenty dollars in their hand, and get in some supervised practiced time?
🙄
Unless there is a terrific rally, the basebows will be coming home soon. There just does not seem to be a fire burning.
Maybe the tsaikos could establish a “Wags to Riches” scholarship fund for local boys…
haha. too cute, Ipu.
My parents sent me to camp as a child and when I returned they had moved and left no forwarding address.
Good Day, great post. I believe many people lack a holistic approach to improve their happiness in life. One should not focus on carreer, sports, relation, family, religion, etc specifically. It is all about to balance all aspects of life. Please have a look at our initiative for holistic life planning: http://www.lifemanagementonline.com
whitey/jmxxxx,
Thanks for the well-wishes for #2 son. Winging it out to OR this afternoon.
Speaking of fb camps and their relationship to recruiting, when you look at the numbers of kids who will participate it illustrates the odds of actually landing a scholarship that will pay for a full-ride thru college. Out of hundreds who attend a successful camp maybe a handful will actually receive legit D1 offers and a slightly larger group after that D2 or NAIA schollies.
For the rest, I want to relate as a parent that my experience of D3 football has really opened up my eyes during these past 4 years. The overall level of athleticism may not be BCS-level stuff but for competition and excitement D3 football is right up there!
One thing that I have noticed at this level is that there is far more stability in the coaching staffs. Many of the people coaching at D3 schools are there for a long time. This is not a reflection of their quality but, I think, more of their desire to be a part of a stable environment that they can build or continue a legacy in.
No D3 school offers athletic scholarships but many of them are well-endowed institutions that have funding available for scholastic achievement. So the possibility is there for the true student-athlete to continue his (or her, in the case of other sports) career at the next level.
I could go on and on but I got a flight to catch but I’ll just end by saying that if you or your son is approached by a D3 coach it would be a good move to really listen to what he or she has to say.
Good morning TSAIKOS
I left on my “vacation” on April 25. I didn’t know until now that Shaq Stokes also left the team. Where is he headed? They seem to have some very good ones coming in though. I know coach Gib, being a first time head coach, is going through a learning phase and it will get better. I hope Coach Chow doesn’t go through what Gib is going through. I think with Coach Chow being a long time assistant at some major programs, including the pros, will cut down on some of the mistakes. I don’t think it will be a perfect season though and I hope the fans also realize such. Improve every year and you will reach your goal. Then, improve even more to ward off the giant slayers.
Have a good trip d1.
Maybe not the first year, but over the next 5 years, Chow will have a winning record.
nice pic of Royce Pollard at jets OTAs

d1:
#100 – yep, I agree with your position that the parents and student should allow time to listen rather than have regrets later – no harm to sit and listen, ask questions and always keep options open.
no “time travel” available to go back and change history!
I’m a mostly peaceful dude so I enjoy the civility shown on the blog recently. I enjoy hearing everyone’s opinion, but man I cannot take bloggers who constantly whine and complain about everything and anything. And the angry dudes – life’s too short for that.
Posters like Bulla, al, garrett, Rainbow Cliff, stevem, DPK, PowderPuff, Pride, even the here today gone tomorrow gigi – that’s why I became a fan here. Plus the host of course.
BTW, anybody heard from Rainbow Cliff lately? Haven’t seen him post for awhile.
When I was coaching, I explained to the kids (early high school age) that I bought my house for $135,000, and at that time, was paying well over $1,000 a month and still paying for 30 years. At that time, the name schools like UCLA, USC, etc., were charging over $35,000 (I know, even higher now) a year for school. So if they they go to a school like that for 5 years, it would be at least $175,000, not including plane fare for themselves and an occasional visit from their family. So if they took out a loan, they would be paying around $2,000 dollars a month for 30 years. By saying this, I also encouraged them to study hard and get good grades and financial aid would become avaiable. If they wanted to play college sports, they don’t necessarily have to focus their sights on the USCs and UCLAs, but small schools may have more money to go around based on the smaller number of enrolled students, and even staying home would be more affordable, but can’t do anything without good grades to qualify.
Jim had to fire 5 coaches to date, Bolla, Nash, DTD, Mack and Roy (water polo)
haha. “here today gone tomorrow gigi”
Hope nobody fires Jim…
I think the monkey on JD’s back is his inability to reduce the AD deficit.
Anyone know the UH baseball score?
MM
@117
The proof that things have become normal again is the return of names like “Manoa Mist, gigi, jonj, haroldwah.” There were a few others from yesterdays blog too. The banter is light and enjoyable with a family feeling and the focus remains on relationships made through UH sports and UH football.
I’m not pumping up gigi, but i think it took her return to bring this blog back to its old self.
It’s all about the “F’s”
No give up!
kanole,
6-9, down to their last out
Mahalo BaseBows!
We outta da WAC!
Thanks D1shima. Looks like pau hana for them.
Sean: really? am surprised. thanks.
No prob.
Kinda nice that Pops was on the last call for UHAD in the WAC. 🙂
It’s a bummer UH lost, but I couldn’t take looking at those empty seats anymore.
…or the Swamp People hooting it up by the field mic! 👿
Baseball Bows, what a let down. WAC was very weak this year. Makes you wonder about Trap.
I think Trap took a young team about as far as they could go.
All the Freshmen now know how they need to step it up as they get closer to and then into postseason play.
From SA Front Page:
UH Baseball
MESA, Ariz. >> Hawaii’s final Western Athletic Conference tournament lasted less than 24 hours as the Rainbows were the first team eliminated following a 9-6 loss to Louisiana Tech on Thursday at Hohokam Stadium.
Matt Sisto (8-4) was rocked for five runs on nine hits in two innings in his 55th and final start for Hawaii, which finished the season 30-25.
Justin Gordey had a career-high four hits for Louisiana Tech (25-27), which had 17 in the game off of five different UH pitchers.
Stephen Ventimilia went 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored and Kaeo Aliviado was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Collin Bennett with 0-for-4 with a walk and was held hitless for the first time in 11 WAC tournament games.
UH went 0-2 for the first time in the tournament since it was brought back in 2006. The Rainbows will move to the Big West Conference next season.
Congratulations to Edgar Castaneda on receiving a scholarship.
Mahalo BaseBows!
Interesting about San Jose hiring Boise’s former AD.
Funny how Edgar Casteneda is foregoing a walkon at Hawaii for a Scholie at FCS SacSt.
While CeeJay Santos is foregoing a Scholie at FCS Weber St to walkon at Hawaii
BTW, if Niiro leg is so strong, why was Mack thinking of using Iosefa or Kenny Estes as backup kickers last season?
wow…spring sports was kaput.
BigWave:
was it kicker or punter for Niiro? I thought it was “kicker” for field goals, PAT, and kickoff.
Nirro is a somewhat “large body” for a kicker – remember Shroudt(sp) – he was tall and thick!
al:
wahine won WAC tennis championship and several track & field athletes are still competing.
to bad Amber Kauhman could not participate due to her accident – she would have won the high jump again and probably did well at the next levels.
A House,
@130
I remember #99 giving some good licks on those kick offs!!!
With all that hype of Dunnachie given the green light last year to “boom” the ball – it fizzled out really quick – visions of a very high kick and the Warrior special team players surrounding the punt returner – many visions of fumbles via dropping the ball or jarring it loose with so many players hitting the returner!
hope, under Coach Chow, Dunnachie will really be given the opportunity to “boom the ball” – been waiting since my first U-tube videos before he enrolled at UH.
sean:
Midori keeps reminding me of those hits – especially the one where he flatteded the ball carrier near the side lines!!!
One of our very favoriate players was the “slot receiver” from Canada – darn, forgot his name, but can clearly remember how he kinda fell to the ground like a gooney bird.
2 of our most cherished players will always be Timmy Chang and Criag Stutzman as both made it clear very early that they would commit to UH – was especially happy when Billy Ray did the same.
and the bell tolls at the church next door – slow day and trying to insure we hit 100 today
nice film
slow day – heck so slow that I posted 100 on #136 when I meant 200!
Number #39 ballpicker –
Plus one! Lovely lady that Ninia ;)!
Thank you to Coach Wags!
Enjoy your retirement!!!
Happy Birthday Birthday peeps!
Grats to shima ‘ohana and number two son!
Belated grats to papajoe on the hole in one! You geev ‘um braddah!
ST
Why does Ceejay have to redshirt? Isn’t Weber St a level below D1?
# 89 –
Alice Knapp and Maude Post… those were the days! 🙂
DPK
Yes she is!
To be honest I was quite surprised that ST posted a pic of her on the blog. A good surprise I will add.
Yup those were the days!
Ballpicker,
She hasn’t aged a bit, it looks like. And you can still see the inner beauty shining in her eyes…
No leave us out. What you talking about? Das not inside, blue and white only, I gotta go to Imua lounge info you talking about right? You know you blue and white guys, you guys all da same. Always making references to blue and white kind stuff and leaving us public school guys out of da loop. First was Imua Lounge, and now it’s Pau Hana Lounge. You know what? Neva mind you guys. I going take my purple and yellow hat i went get from my friend Koakane, I going down to da St. Louis Alumni Clubhouse. Look for me ova dea, I going be singing “O Ma’u mau, O Ma’u mau, Punahou our Punahou. O’ahu a O’ahu a, Punahou our Punahou.”
#147 – Eh wait! You stay talking about Mana Richardson’s sister? She da one dat used to pick on all her bruddahs dat was three times bigger den her? She is da hammer.
Ballpicker –
Just to be fair, I guess we should say that Wags looks beautiful too, eh? 😆
Actually, Wags brings back a very different set of excellent memories. I still remember runnin’ away from work and sittin’ in TGIFriday’s on Ward and watchin’ as Wags led us to to the Holiday Bowl win. And the beatings laid on BYU after years of frustration?
Priceless!
Thanks Coach and good luck to you in the future.
kifi: 1st time seeing your name here. How long you been a Tsaiko?
sooo, how are you guys calling game 6? Will the Heat win? 2 guys suspended. Dunno, but I hope the Heat win.
the way LeBron and Wade feed off each other — priceless poetry in motion. Man, I love to watch them in action.
kifi –
I’m reminded of another very beautiful girl’s Dorm Advisor from Alice Knapp… gosh what was her name again… and who was the big garut she was married to?!
Dang, memories escape me.
Hey, memba the time the home boys from our block scored a bunch of TDs against the college “All-Stars” during the year when local All-Stars gave the college stars all they could handle in the Hula Bowl? Dem’s some great memories too. And DA almost gettin arrested because he wouldn’t take down the Hawaiian flag at Aloha Stadium during the game? 😆
IMUA! 😆
And yes, make no mistake, Ninia was da bull of dat family! 😉
DPK…
Before the Prep School dorms were completed, my junior year at KSB, 7th & 8th grade boys used Iolani Dorm & were part of the Boys’ School the rest of the school day. My kids all loved you, Micah, Sam, Mahina & the rest at the dorms. But you especially stood out for your energy & positive attitude, plus you were a smidgeon nuts upstairs.
If any of you will be on the Big Island on June 9, Bruce Kekuewa & PIAA (Doris) are having a football camp/combine at KSH for our local athletes. Bruce is trying to get them to feel & understand what it takes to make it to the next level & to familiarize themselves with drills, etc they’ll be expected to participate in at other events. Should be fun, & it’s a real nice stadium & campus (I’ll give a tour!).
And the picture…I told Ninia that I wanted to send it to a ‘friend,’ she said ‘fine,’ and I don’t think she knows that our ‘friend’ posted it on his WB blog! She’ll be surprised! We’ll miss Wags, he’s a good man; as yet, we don’t know who the new AD will be.
Back to work…..
The Heat need your prayers.
HiloBilly: Hubby and I rode in a helicopter when we were on the Big Island last year. We saw the blue roofs of Kamehameha from way up high. They contrasted with the red roofs of UH-Hilo. Fun trip.
Eh Kifi….I know you??? You went to that school on the heights right above middle campus???
MWAHAHAHAHAAHA
#100 d1,
you are absolutely right about playing the sport we love; our children, or young men just want to keep playing the game they grew up playing from pop warner to high school and college (for the lucky ones).
having gone through the process, the roller coaster ride of recruiting, the camps, the summer trips, the calls, the emails, the text messages, the visits by coaches, the ‘business’ of collegiate athletics…… it is quite overwhelming and daunting.
we are blessed that our son was given the opportunity to play at the next level at a D-1AA school and will graduate this fall with a degree and having played his last year as a 5th year senior. the memories are priceless, and that is what i hold near and dear til i leave this earth.
many parents have a D-1A mentality but a D-II or D-III son; and they burn bridges because they ‘assume’ a lot of things. when the phone doesn’t ring, when their is no written offer from the ‘bigger’ schools, they realize their options are limited at best. i suggest that parents listen to everyone, talk to all the coaches from every level, and just make sure that your son ‘fits’ into their system……
all the HS ballers from the 808 would love to stay home deep down inside, but not everyone has the privilege to do so….but they are still and will always be Sons of Hawaii in my eyes, because they represented the 808 when they were away….Hawaii is always home.
IMUA LANAKILA
good luck to all the parents and student-athletes out there, many opportunities available and keep ALL your options open.

Hard to get the monkey off your back when JD has both hands handcuffed to his ankles. Upper campus seems to be calling the shots in terms of who to hire and at what salary, who to fire and what to buy them out at. Travel subsidies won’t help the deficit either.
#156 – Hey Hilo Billy! Baby Kekuewa boy stay goin’ Bowling Green? Is that right?
DLM: I know nothing about the influence of upper campus on JD’s job. Where did you get your info from?
#159 – Hi Jesse James. Had to go to dat school. Neva pass da test for da one wea gotta use da tie every day.
Bulla:
Your post has a lot of meaning for all parents in Hawaii. It should not only apply to those students who excel in athletics but also in other endeavors such as science, music, art, etc. Not all students have the fortune of getting a full ride scholarship at the school of their choice. Many of them have to go to a school that their parents can afford but which still offers them an opportunity to study in the field of their choice. Of course, their parents would want them return one day if they do go away. Like you said they are all our Sons (and Daughters) of Hawaii. Very well said. Thank you.
Gigi. Gotta go look at da bulletin board at da coconut wireless. Das wea he wen find out dat kine stuffs.
kifi…
Yep, Kelii’s on campus in Ohio, working hard, loving it, & has a shot at starting at center. Great kid, great attitude, a good learner, from a super family. He did very well at Arizona Western; hopefully, freshman Akoakoa Paleka-Kennedy will continue the hard work. After wrestling season was pau, Akoakoa slimmed down to about 275, looks great…lean & mean at almost 6’4″. We wish both of them the best!
gigi…nice to have you back, I hope I can make it to a game & t-gate & meet all of you, bring some of the Big Island style pupu+ w/ me. BIK, you lurking and listening?
Off to watch grand-kids for a couple of hours, post later…
Jesse James. Your name sounds very familiar. Do you ride horses? or motorcycles?
Congratulations to Wags on his retirement…He never got his “just due” for building the UH Football program and like Rocha, got “shafted” in a “classless” way. Wags has done for Kamehameha and still has supported the Warrior football program over the years…I wish Wags and his family the best!!! Much Mahalos!
Also should note that JD was the “hatchet man” on Wags and many people have NEVER forgiven him for it…Likewise, JD was again the hatchet on Mack…
Bowwar: I thought Hugh Yoshida was the one who fired Wagner.
#167
Much mahalos and yes it applies across the board to both genders and all subjects. The important thing is that our kids get their degrees and become productive citizens. May God continue to protect and provide for our ohana / Aloha ke Akua
GG . . .
The messenger was the current AD.
Bulla . . .
Well said!
With the Stafford loan interest rate climbing to 6.8% this summer it is vital to seek the best fit both educationally and financially.
kifi #170….motorcycles…..also Chevys…LOL
Wafan is correct…It was Yoshida’s call, but JD was definitely the messenger. JD even offered Riley Wallace the “same deal” because he was so “outspoken” in his defense of Wags. At the time, part of the reason for Wag’s departure was “win-loss”, but the other had to do with “graduation rate”…
Like the slogan: “Are You Ready To Chevy?!”
Also the one where the girl says, “See ya in a Kia”…
Saw a white Nissan “Cube” with a license plate that said, “Tofu”…
It looke like one…
looke=looked
Happy Birthday Allen Allen…
Da Bomb…He was offered a full ride football scholarship but turned it down
to play his then newfound love, volley ball. Nice link on him here:

Merry happy graduation to m/m d1 #2!
Tough decisions ahead . . . find a job or become a professional student.
Whoo-hoo!!!
Happy birthday, graduation, retirement, celebration, whatever if I missed it!
Whoo-hoo!!!
A-House, Kyle Niiro is listed as a place kicker, yet when Hadden and Chun weren’t 100% last season, Mack said he might have to use Iosefa and Estes was seen kicking at practice, too. Never was there any mention of using Niiro.
Oh and that Canadian SB, was he Dane MacArthur?
Warrior Dave, any time you move UP you have to sit out. No matter FCS, DII, DIII and I’m not sure but maybe even NAIA
yay, Miami!!!!
Talk about extreme sacrifice, mao sugiyama.
The kids are out of school. Everyone needs to watch out when driving!
Sadly, I have waaaaaaaaaaay to many to go. Might as well be forever to go.
Tsigh . . .
Well, when all is said and done, there really is no classy way to fire someone. Hurt feelings are bound to happen. What you gonna do?
Hilo Billy –
Thanks for the kind words. Those WERE some good days! What amazed me was how your family had so many keeds pass Maude Post and Alice Knapp and every one of them were exceptional- excellent people all! Would love to see all of you again sometime! And my man Puni – never saw an 8th grader bench 225 pounds before or after him!
Tell Aunty Lisanne and Uncle Bruce we said howzit!
kifi –
No lie. You never go to the lower campus because no had one tie big enough to fit you!
#165 Gigi
Unfortunately you weren’t around when all was discussed on this blog. Glad to have you back.
Agree with all the small school commentary. Parents out there should make sure their kids also put in a few applications to smaller schools. From experience, I found that grant money is much easier to come by at those schools. Get the FAFSA in asap after new year and see what they will offer. Many schools even waive application fees. Small schools are often “diamonds in the rough” and an experience your kids will remember for their lifetime.
Congrats Coach Wags!

Glad to hear Bruce Kekuewa giving back to the Big Island and the kids at KHS Big Island. I know Kamehameha Schools has been really good to him and his family. He was the same way in high school always out going and very helpful. Him and his wife are GOOD people!! If anyone sees them on the BIG ISLAND tell him Sean from Kaiser said What’s UP and maybe I’ll see him at the airport again soon.
Mahalo

People at the time thought it was crazy for Wags to hire a soon to be thirty year old offensive coordinator who ran a very funky offense, that had never been run anywhere at the division 1 football level
It is now looked upon as an ingenious move, that has changed college football forever. People don’t know that what Auburn and Oregon are running today, has it’s roots in that original “flexbone” offense. I believe that all three academies still run variations of the original offense, that was made famous by Georgia Southern quarterback Tracy Hamm.
Surprisingly Bowling Green is 91.
Trying to find who is above UH is like digging
for gold in the beaches of Hawaii…
Ipu Man –
Betcha UH’s ranking improves dramatically after next season! 😉 It IS interesting to note who we are ranked above…
Grrrrrrrr…got this page but is not updated yet to where Hawaii is…

DPK, God willing and the creeks don’t rise, and the key players (line) stay healthy…
DPK, The Lord willing and the creeks don’t rise, and the key players (line) stay healthy…
sorry, it took so long for the first post I thought maybe the word G*d was
on the spammer no-no list…
As a parent of a high school junior (almost senior), we’ve found that some of the smaller schools will give scholarships solely based on entering GPA. Chaminade gives $4K or $8K, which can make it cheaper than UH. Screecher is looking at smaller schools, most of which are private.
A-joe – no blame my alma mater for the Big East fiasco. They were one of the originals schools. With an enrollment of about 5K, they’re a little too small to play at the FBS level. They are presently at the FCS level, although when I went there, it was D-III. Still think 16 schools for basketball is too many. I’ve read that they have scheduling problems every year.
Anyhow, got the heads up on this from Channel Two news sports,
Leahy. So if he is a Tsaiko, maybe he can show us where UH is…
kifi-
That was a very exciting offense. Still a fan of PJ and love to watch his teams run that offense. Not to mention, some of those teams are highly ranked nationally and validate the effectiveness of that scheme all the time.
Ipu guy,
Like they say, its the end of season rankings which matter the most.
ST,
According to the TV contract between the Big East and ESPN, ESPN currently has the exclusive right to discuss money with the Big East for the next TV contract. If the Big East doesn’t accept ESPN’s offer (like the Big East turned down something like $1.4 bil over 9 years last year), when this window ends (September I think) then other networks will be able to *officially* talk money with the Big East.
I saw “officially” because the TV contract specifically allows for other networks to make “presentations” to the Big East. Both NBC and Fox have been making presentations to the Big East. However, they cannot talk money directly with the Big East. Note that the Big East has hired “media consultants” that have talked with the TV networks and told the Big East how much money to expect to get if they don’t accept ESPN’s offer…and the Big East keeps turning down ESPN so they clearly think that they will get more from someone else.
SDSU also hired “media consultants” who talked directly with TV networks to figure out how much money the Big East will get. After getting the news, SDSU left the MWC for the Big East.
In other words, the “wink-wink” deals are being made. I’m also guessing that their wish list goes: BYU, Air Force, then Fresno State. If the money and other issues work out, they could get BYU–especially since BYU cannot use the WAC to fill their November schedule anymore. BYU has their TV deal with ESPN so there is no need for them to commit until after the TV details are known.
Karl Benson took UT-Arlington away from the WAC.

There are things to report. But I have to space them out. It’s a long summer.
But I like this time of year.
SteveM
We still have an ample amount of spam.
But when people play nicely, I can clean and go.
Ahhhh. I can almost hear crickets.
cheep or chirp
I don’t really know how to mimic a cricket. But whenever I feel I’m going insane, I blame the sound in my head on crickets.
Mr. Tsai,
@214
I hope those reports have to do with some transfers making it into the summer sessions. Sooner than later.
I think I can get rid of the alias for now!
As Wafan would say, Nytal!!!
