Snap decision

The Warriors are changing direction in pursuit of an eventual successor to long-snapper Luke Ingram, who will be a senior in the fall.

The Warriors are in the process of trying to land a center/long-snapper from Japan. The prospect reportedly is 6 feet 2 and 290 pounds.

The Warriors already have a commitment from another long-snapper, Grant Meersand of Mira Costa High. Cameron Chow, son of head coach Norm Chow, is a full-time teacher and basketball coach at Mira Costa.

Ingram, who played virtually one-armed last year, should be fully healed from shoulder surgery for the Aug. 1 start of training camp. Beau Yap made most of the long snaps during spring training. Yap will enter camp as a No. 1 defensive end.

* * * * * *

The Warriors continue to craft the training-camp roster. The NCAA limit is 105 players, although the roster may expand on the first day of a school’s fall semester. The Warriors’ preference is an initial training-camp roster of about 102, with the flexibility to expand for late transfers. So far, about 90 players have been invited to training camp.

Sugoi! JJ and Mack spoke about the Far east connection for years but I guess the situation was not right. Kudos to Coach Chow. Off to SF – among other things will be at a fundraiser at the St. Francis Hotel by the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California (Hawaii expats who sponsor tailgates at San Jose and Fresno) to honor Duane Kurisu and Alan Ikawa.

As I heard it, it wasn’t the baseball receipts that were in the safes.

Also, as I heard it, it was only cash that was taken. No credit card receipts, no checks. This was grab-and-go. And leaving notes? Sheesh. We’re not talking Lex Luther here.

  14. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 7:40 am

sounds like the perps were jeering at the authorities… with their notes. “Catch me if you can!”

  15. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2012 7:41 am

I have a lot of respect for Luke Ingram. He had a really bad shoulder injury last year. But he never griped. He just taped it up, and tried to do as best as he could. But imagine having to snap with a bad shoulder while absorbing a shot from a defensive lineman. And Ingram usually was one of the first down the field.

  16. tommui May 23, 2012 7:42 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Coach Chow doesn’t fool around, does he? A possible Japan recruit – wow!

  17. WarriorNY May 23, 2012 7:46 am

    @8,

Hahaha… One day I’ll get a job that pays me and a friend to go to Hawaii to investigate claims that have already been disproven… And put it on the taxpayers tab…

  18. Old School Dave May 23, 2012 7:46 am

Hope they change all of the locks, access codes, doors, etc to where the $$ is stored at the UH AD. They might also consider daily deposits/pickups to the bank so that that a minimal amount of cash is stored onsite. Inexpensive video surveillance cameras are another precaution. UH campus security is stretched thin, don’t have much teeth as they aren’t armed. “Stop, or I’ll write you up!!”

  19. Last Call May 23, 2012 7:51 am

Out of curiosity has any reporter at the SA tried to get a feeling from Greenwood or JD on where UH might vote on the Boise State application to join the Big West ?

It dosen’t seem like it is getting much support from our fans.

  20. Old School Dave May 23, 2012 7:52 am

Hope the player from Japan has the necessary TOEFL scores which measure English Language ability to do college level work, in addition to qualifying SAT scores. English ability can be a challenge for many foreign players, particularly those from East Asia.

  21. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2012 7:55 am

If I were the Big West, I’d let Boise in, provided it signs an agreement to remain for at least five years. And I’d impose a hefty exit fee — $10 million? And if I were Boise, I’d sign it, because the non-football teams have no leverage.

  22. rage777 May 23, 2012 7:56 am

  26. Old School Dave May 23, 2012 7:59 am

ST: Good point. He could be like the “Average Asian” character played by comedian Bobby Lee on MADD TV. 🙂

  27. Annoddah Dave May 23, 2012 8:01 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

If the Big West allows Boise State in, do they have to pay travel subsidies like Hawaii? LOL. From all reports Boise does not have much of an airport to handle large planes. I think that if we have to pay subsidies for travel, it should only cover the flight from LAX or SFO to HNL and back. Getting to these hubs is on their dime…they could fly, drive, bus, or rail.

  28. Last Call May 23, 2012 8:14 am

I am more interested in where UH is on their vote.I am pretty sure most of our coaches don’t like the travel situation that comes with Boise State.

On another note the Sun Belt has officially rejected both Idaho and New Mexico State as new members according to the Idaho Statesman.

Boise’s airport is OK. I like any airport where the rental-car building is nearby.

    Fresno’s airport is really small.

And that Moscow-Pullman airport looks like it was lifted from the set of “Wings.”

How do they know? I guess you have to tell them?

  50. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2012 9:10 am

Since my okole is closing in on a million United miles, I have to be nice-nice for a few more months.

But I do notice, particularly out of SFO, if the flight to Honolulu is not sold out, there always seems to be a mysterious “mechanical problem.” Then we sit for a couple of hours until the plane fills up or we move to a later, fuller flight.

Maybe it’s just a coinky dinky.

Actually, it was JJ who used to warn me. We were once at SFO. He asked if the flight was full. The worker said, no, it’s about half-full. JJ said: “Let’s go eat. We’re not leaving on time.” And off we went to the Crab Pot, which used to be the best airport restaurant. Alas, it’s past tense.

    But I digress.

  51. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2012 9:12 am

Meant Boise State’s non-football sports have no leverage.

Jim Donovan of the University of Hawaii ranks ninth among 11 athletic directors from current or incoming Mountain West Conference members in base salary.

Donovan’s $240,000 base topped only those from Wyoming ($214,884) and Air Force ($165,300), according to a survey of 2011 figures published by USA Today.

The conference leaders were New Mexico’s Paul Krebs ($408,391) and Nevada-Las Vegas’ Jim Livengood ($350,000), according to the survey.

USAToday also said MWC commissioner Craig Thompson received $600,000.

Worst: tie between Hawaiian and United.

All those going to Vegas on Hawaiian after June 30, 2012 be prepared to land at Terminal 1, make that long walk to the tram, long walk to baggage claim, and congestion!! Terminal 2 will be closing and torn down.

Hawaiian will be located at Terminal 1 about 5 months before relocating to Terminal 3 ( the new one East of the main terminal ) IF construction is on schedule.

Why? young or old; short or tall; male or female; rich or poor; skinny or fat; good or bad health; VIP or nobody; good or bad driving record; religious or athist; etc. once the driver gets into a car, the driver can do anything he/she wants – fast or slow; run red light or stop sign, etc.

  75. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 11:57 am

This is very good news about the possible long snapper recruit out of Japan. I hope this will lead to other potential recruits from the Asian theater. This is exactly what UH needs to be the hub of the Asian market and strengthen it’s position to be a viable University for a conference on the West Coast. Can you imagine if there were a receiver in Japan that would do well at UH and UH Football being telecast back to the Japan market. All kinds of marketing possibilities if the UH marketing department becomes creative.

  76. Stephen Tsai May 23, 2012 11:59 am

    Old…808:

Most important, UH needs more o-linemen.

  77. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 12:00 pm

I hope the UH marketing department thinks about different ways of promoting UH Athletics and UH football in American Samoa and Australia and New Zealand. We have been dragging along for too long in doing an effective job of promoting UH football in these areas. Someone correct me if I am wrong since I am making as assumption in regards to these markets.

  78. G (China) May 23, 2012 12:05 pm

Never flew on Singapore, but have heard that it’s one of the best.

But I would say Asiana, Korean, and Cathay Pacific ranks in my top three

  79. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 12:05 pm

ST…yes I agree UH needs more o-lineman but apply how this would help UH in the Asian market. Can you imagine all the hype UH would receive from a new fan base because of Japanese players playing at the UH. We could in essence be Japan’s favorite team. The promotional possibilities is huge. UH by establishing a strong Asian market base can become attractive if we ever had to move conferences again. Our world is stringing and we need to be on top of the new markets out there.

  80. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 12:11 pm

The Hawaii Visitors Bureau does a good job of promoting Hawaii to the Japan and now Chinese and Korean market. Hawaiiana flourishes in Japan with Hula halaus all over Japan. We have many Kumu Hulas and Hawaiian musicians that are well established in the Japan market. UH needs to think outside of the box to capture this market and make UH football relevant to the potential huge fan base.

  81. oldtimer808 May 23, 2012 12:13 pm

Ok getting off da box since this kind of talk has been going on for years concerning Asia.

    And whoa…potential center/long snapper sounds like a Stretch-sized boy. 🙂

    Come on ‘Bows!!!

Happy….you have to let the golf course know about the hole-in-one and verified by your playing partners and the course will send the info to the newspaper. I still want to know what iron PJ used. The number 5 hole is a short par 3. We usually use a pitching wedge or nine iron and some guys use an 8 or 7 iron.

  95. MattyBoy May 23, 2012 1:12 pm

    ST,

If the case is that UH is in need of O-lineman, then why is it that they’re offering a whole bunch of defensive players? I barely see any offers for O-lineman.

  96. jm2375 May 23, 2012 1:12 pm

As a condition of entry into the Big West, B$U should have to pay an early termination fee of AT LEAST $15M, payable ONLY by B$U and not by the other conference.

So, getting to Boise from SFO or LAX could take longer than getting to HNL????

  97. PowderPuff May 23, 2012 1:16 pm

A-House…okay, maybe not THAT heavy. Haha! Ooops!

Oldtimer…is #5 the super short, downhill Par 3? I forget that course already…haven’t played West Loch in close to a decade, I think.

I think some of the offers made to defensive linemen can cross over to the offensive side of the ball since many of them play two ways. I also think the coaches are looking for the most athletic in the linemen whether offensive or defensive.

Good one, 92.jm2375: “In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child travelling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are travelling with more than one small child, pick your favourite.”

    old timer:

I don’t see any need for your apologies regarding your opinions of “grabbing the horns” on the Asia athletic market in favor of UH.

fact is I do agree with you that this may be the catalyst to increasing UH’s athletics into Japan.

I do know that Jim D has been pushing to get UH into Asia with Coach Mack in the past and Coach Gib with his tour of China last August.

Would it not be great to have at least one talented player from the Far East, down under, and Southeast Asia on each UH team? Football may be the start and then go into baseball, basket ball, softball, golf, track, swimming & diving, and water polo; not necessarily in that order.

I do know that Garret has posted many times that certain PAC 12 schools have already established the “academic” side, but UH has a lot to offer in astronomy (telescopes on Mauna Kea, Maunaloa, and Haleakala) and marine sciences and volcanology. Is there any far East athlete on any PAC 12 school? I don’t think so.

BOI has a rental car “building” now?

Last time I was there the RAC counters were in the terminal and the attendants were outside in kiosks that made a porta-potty look like a hangar.

  111. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 3:24 pm

    Hole in one? Too good!

Hubby and I own 2 sets of golf clubs. We’ll put them to good use soon at the Pearl Country Club. Nice driving range and we don’t get the sun right in our eyes as it sets.

  112. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 3:27 pm

Good about that football player from Japan. When we were there in 2008, we didn’t see any men who had the physique of a football player. Most of the men were slim and of average height.

  113. papajoe2 May 23, 2012 3:27 pm

I say the hole in one was luck because I’ve never made one before. But I aimed and used a longer than normal club. into the wind, so I won’t give it back and will enjoy it. Its ironic that on Saturday, at Mililani GC, I hit a ball into the hole from about 70 yards on 1 bounce, for a birdie on the par 5 #17. I screwed up my drive so didn’t reach in 3. I’m not saying that I’m a good golfer as I have an 18-20 handicap, but I really love the game and once in a while I get lucky. Too bad I cannot afford to golf everyday but, twice/3 times a month and 9 holes on Tuesdays at a public course and an occasional tournament is fine for me. I hope all of you golfers get a hole in one. I hope I’m there too to reap the benefits. LOL. It actually feels better today than yesterday.

  114. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 3:28 pm

It’s always a thrill to feel the jet take off the runway. I’ll miss that this year. Too many medical bills…

  116. papajoe2 May 23, 2012 3:32 pm

gigi I’ll be there for a golf tournament on Friday. Its called the Close Open and is a benefit for Pearl City High School Athletic Department put on by Close Construction. Last year they put it on for Mililani High and the previous year for Waipahu High. Look for me. Of the 100+ golfers, I’ll be the only good looking one there. bwahahahaha.

  117. Pauoa Boy May 23, 2012 3:33 pm

  119. papajoe2 May 23, 2012 3:34 pm

A friend of mine went to the Big Island last week with a gof club and scored his 19th hole in one. I’m not sure at what course, but the others said that of the 3 courses they played, it was the hardest hole.

  120. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 3:35 pm

Gigi, if you golf in a mumu, you should post it on You Tube.

Bet you would get a million hits.

Not too many people in the world golf in a muu-muu.

  129. kawika49 May 23, 2012 5:11 pm

I lost a bet and had to play with a muu muu in the next tourney. I won in my foursome that day. The muu muu was less restrctive on my body parts. Wish I could play in a muu muu more often.

  130. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 5:19 pm

  131. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 5:25 pm

    The Japanese coaches connection… Ahhh

  133. jm2375 May 23, 2012 5:49 pm

BTW, try really hard not to go through Customs at MIA. Very unorganized, considering how much international traffic they get. And then if you are connecting to a domestic flight, you have to go out to the ticketing lobby and go through TSA again.

  134. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 5:58 pm

Never been to Miami. Hear it is really hot and humid.

Orlando is nice, though. Enjoyed Disney World.

  135. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 5:59 pm

Ipu: That golf-muumuu video was posted on the WB in 2008.

  136. jm2375 May 23, 2012 6:05 pm

gigi – Miami is just as hot and humid as Orlando, but I think it’s worse in Orlando because it’s land-locked and doesn’t get the ocean breezes that Miami does. I was pleasantly surprised when we went to the Bahamas last July. It was almost like Hawaii. The water was clearer but not all the beaches are public.

  137. al May 23, 2012 6:10 pm

at 6’2″ and 290 lbs…it is quite obvious that his nickname will be “sumo”.

  138. Garret May 23, 2012 6:13 pm

Great news about the recruit from Japan! UH needs OL, long snappers are always important and too often overlooked, and this could be a great way to help UH get more recognition in the Japanese sports market.

  139. Garret May 23, 2012 6:15 pm

Interesting note in this Philly newspaper.

The conference is expected to grow to 14 teams in 2015. That’s when Navy joins for football only. Brigham Young or Air Force is expected to join Navy, according to multiple sources at the spring meetings.

    http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/20120523_League_working_on_divisional_alignment.html#ixzz1vianlMaH

  140. Garret May 23, 2012 6:16 pm

SJSU hired BSU’s longtime AD, good decision that should help them build positive momentum.

Best I can tell, SJSU didn’t interview anyone else. Bleymaier was the No. 1 candidate all along and, according to multiple sources, interviewed very well Monday

Bleymaier is credited with turning Boise State into a football powerhouse during his three decades with the Broncos.

  141. Garret May 23, 2012 6:18 pm

UH has offered far more scholarships that they have available spots, which is a change under Coach Chow that goes with the more aggressive recruiting stance. However, I don’t think ANYBODY goes this overboard with offers…

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze wants to make sure the Rebels get back to winning, but in order to do that, he needs players. So, instead of picking a handful of players to recruit, Freeze and his staff have blanketed the country with offers — 241 offers (and counting) to be exact.

That’s right, Ole Miss has 241 verbal offers out to fill 25-30 spots for the 2013 class.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/ole-miss-coach-hugh-freeze-blankets-country-more-162832015.html

  142. Garret May 23, 2012 6:19 pm

I don’t think that TCU’s AD was supposed to reveal this news…

According to Chris Level of Rivals’ RedRaiderSports.com, Del Conte, who was trying to pump up his new conference, told the group of about 200 that while the Big 12 was once in trouble, it “now has schools like Florida State, Clemson and Miami trying to get in.”

Unfortunately, that was supposed to be a secret.

  143. Garret May 23, 2012 6:21 pm

I think that Ohio State is giving iPads to *all* of their student-athletes, it is bad that Colorado only gave them to football players. This actually helps with Academics and is a nice (and legal) recruiting tool since recruits might like to know they will get a free iPad.

Ohio State announced Wednesday that the school plans to give all student-athletes an iPad as part of an academic support initiative.

JM: I visited Orlando in January 1975. It was around 65 degrees during the day. The pool was cold so I jumped in and jumped right out. Lol. Must be hotter during the summer.

  145. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 6:39 pm

Garret: Nice to see you posting again. I missed that.

  146. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 6:49 pm

Garret: Too bad Ohio State does not give free iPads to ALL students enrolled at their school.

Daughter is going to grad school in Nevada in June, and must buy the school computer for $3,000. Not free. This computer has material for her course of study (going for a doctorate in physical therapy).

UH should recruit Japanese baseball players. If you’ve ever seen high school games in Japan, you’ll know it’s incredible. I think the national high school tournament is broadcast on television nationwide.

    We need a Yu Darvish.

  152. Kekoa May 23, 2012 7:29 pm

  168. Ipu Man May 23, 2012 8:42 pm

You look marvelous Gigi, nice straight left arm, eye on the ball, feet parallel with the shoulders…how far didja ball go???

Actually I look a little bit like Kekoa but wear a S-size t-shirt.

So we may be lost cousins.

  169. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 8:42 pm

  172. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 8:43 pm

Ipu: the darn ball went about 5 feet. Sooo embarrassing. All shown on that infamous video that Stretch took.

  173. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 8:46 pm

Weeks later, we attended LizKauai’s golf tournament on Kauai. She was also being inducted as president of the Rotary Club for West Kauai.

  174. Curt May 23, 2012 8:48 pm

Howzit everyone. Been busy and haven’t been around much. Regarding comment #67, what did J(J) mean by:

“Ahhh….the search for the infamous Koa Mahu has ended…..MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”

    Has KoaMahu been unmasked?

  175. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 8:53 pm

Hi Curt: JJ was referring to A-Joe.

  176. Ipu Man May 23, 2012 8:56 pm

So Gigi, didja ever swim in a muu-muu like in this great

  177. SteveM May 23, 2012 8:57 pm

Curt — not really. I was with A-joe and (J)James in the Tsai-ko workshop one evening when the original Koa Mahu was posting. The original. I suspect there have been a few replacements since… 😆

  178. gigi-hawaii May 23, 2012 9:00 pm

Ipu: wow! beautiful painting! But, no, I have never dipped my muu in the ocean.

  179. Ipu Man May 23, 2012 9:01 pm

    Meanwhile, Go Warriors…especially this fall!

    Night all…

  180. Moocher May 23, 2012 9:05 pm

If UH wants to recruit Japan, I’ll throw this name out…Brian Derby.

He holds some football camps in Japan and being a lineman for UH, he knows what it takes.

If anyone is going to spot talent in Japan it’s without a doubt 100% Brian Derby.

    Here’s a link http://www.derbycamp.com/

apologies if I broke any rules by posting a link 🙂

  181. Curt May 23, 2012 9:09 pm

Okay. I’m a little confused. All I’m getting from this is that there are multiple KoaMahu’s. I guess the more da betta.

  182. kawika49 May 23, 2012 11:03 pm

    #183 Don’t ask, don’t tell.
