Stay classy, San Diego

San Diego — If you don’t love San Diego, something is wrong with you.

Great people, great weather, great food.

The Warriors, though, won’t be experiencing San Diego until tonight. The Warriors have a walk-through at the Ching athletic complex this morning. They depart this afternoon. They won’t arrive at the hotel until about 10 p.m Pacific time.

Am I the only one impressed that the University of San Diego Toreros have their own custom-designed buses?

Never went to Mexico whenever we were in San Diego… relatives were too young, for the most part. But sure was good to have relatives to visit & home-cooked meals while in the Army.

It’s sharing time :). Do you see . . . great passes by our QB? Do you seeeeeeeee . . . many completed passes? Do you see a good # of touchdowns juuuuuuhhhhhhhhhst enough to gain VICTORY on our opponent’s field?

    Share your + + + POSITIVE THOUGHTS + + + from this week . . . and what you are thinking now :D.

Rail in San Diego. $5 went all over SD on and off. They had 2 security guards/police officers at each stop. Pretty good place to visit. Ate at Fillipe’s (Phillipe’s). Good Italian food and price is very reasonable. Also a great sandwich shop there but I forget the name.

    JBL VRX 900.

    Great large venue speakers.

Would solve the sound issue at Aloha Staduim.

  57. (Jesse) James October 5, 2012 9:45 am

Woo Hoo….Kevin is working hard for UH….First, he got the ammo for the cannon….now, looking at large venue speakers…. j/k LOL

  58. al October 5, 2012 9:50 am

j/j…true story. don’t tell my mom she doesn’t know this.

the border patrol did detain us for 4-5 hours.

all we had were our hawaii dr lic.

it didn’t help that we had beer in the car, old bust up jeans, plaid long sleeved shirts, a paper bag with our dirty laundry, and rubber slippers. they kept yelling at us in spanish. kept us in an interrogation room while they strip searched our baby blue ’52 chevy coupe that was registered under my friends brother who could not be found.

    we certainly looked the part.

finally, after sweating our butts all the while, the el capitan comes strolling in to work, thank God that he had visited hawaii years ago. he let us go immediately while the other guards were yelled at.

scary moments for an 18 year old.

  59. islandman October 5, 2012 9:50 am

    San Diego St. 42, Hawaii 24;

Hoping Hawaii can outscore them though.

  60. al October 5, 2012 9:55 am

kevin…would you say that we need about 50 of those through out the aloha stadium?

imagine at 2k per speaker we could have bought ten aloha stadium’s worth of speakers instead burning it on the wonder blundere (1.3m).

  61. al October 5, 2012 9:56 am

looks like we’ll save money on the cannon ammo this year.

  62. Stephen Tsai October 5, 2012 10:01 am

I mean, sheesh, does he want to really go through life as part of “Wonder Blunder.”

It’s just one concert. It can’t be that hard. Plus, doesn’t he play every instrument with that synthesizer. (See: Sir Duke).

  63. (Jesse) James October 5, 2012 10:08 am

ST…True dat. I was thinking Stevie would just put on a concert anyway once he heard of the “scam”….

RE: Stadium JBL VRX 900 speakers w/suspended sub-woofers

Check out this photo for a better idea of what these things look like:

    http://www.jands.com.au/__data/assets/image/0007/27970/JBL_VRX_self-powered_speakers_get_the_Gongweb.jpg

In the photo, the two larger speaker cabinets are actually the powerful suspended sub-woofers and below them are individual VRX 900 speakers connected forming an audio-conch shell if you will.

For this style, Aloha Stadium would actuall only need 22 configurations of these. A single configuration would involve 6-7 of these VRX 900 speakers stacked and hung from the top and arching downward towards the field with may just a single subwoofer at the top.

To give you an idea of how powerful and clear the sound is, below is a link someone posted on line before this year’s Wrestlemania event in Miami. The event was where the Dolphins play. The WWE uses JBL audio for their events and considering the amount of music and voice clarity required, they only utilized four configurations set up in the lighting and sound rig above the ring for the entire football stadium. Granted their configuration involved about a dozen or more VRX 900s, but considering the 360 degree range those speakers needed to cover, using only four configurations for a stadium BIGGER than Aloha Stadium was more than efficient. The event was sold out with a crowd of 74,000+ and the audio was flawless. They did NOT utilize the stadium’s in-house speaker system.

Al: I don’t think you and your pals did anything wrong in Mexico.

However, if you had a Mexican woman hidden under a blanket in the backseat of your car, that might have been a felony.

  73. gigi-hawaii October 5, 2012 11:03 am

ST: you have the right attitude.

It’s not going to be an easy game. I do hope we win, of course, but above all, it will be great to watch the warrior freshmen play!!!

  74. Manoa October 5, 2012 11:07 am

Kevin, the sound at Aloha is horrible– those speakers would help. In the meantime the anouncer needs to tone down the yelling because that makes it worse. It seems to get worse every game I go to.

  75. cee808 October 5, 2012 11:11 am

Improving the stadium PA would be great.

    Installing a FM broadcast TSIako system … priceless! … 🙂 http://www.tsitimers.com/pa_system.html

Seriously though, it would seem that FM or wireless would be something worth considering.

The new Cowboy’s system sounds interesting, but one limited to streaming audio might be sufficient for Aloha Stadium …

“This technology allows stadium guests who are deaf or hard of hearing to receive real-time captions for all public address system announcements and referee calls on a handheld device,”

    http://www.gtri.gatech.edu/casestudy/wireless-captioning-dallas-cowboys-stadium

  76. gigi-hawaii October 5, 2012 11:20 am

ST: how much is gas in San Diego? I’m assuming you rented a car.

  77. Kevin October 5, 2012 11:21 am

Audio and visuals are very important to the live fan experience in modern day live events. Whether it be a concert, convention, or sporting event. Having good audio and visuals are key to presenting a good product and showing you are keeping on top of providing something presentable to your customers and it makes the host of the event look legitimate.

Right now, in my opinion, the Stan Sheriff Center is the only thing “modern” when it comes to facilities at UH and their audio and visual presentation. Les Murakami is great overall, but what it is lacking is the sound system and a scoreboard that is partially functional and even then when that LED board works, it has some funky early 90’s graphics that are tremendously dated.

The LED advertisement boards and that new scoreboard are great, the sound seems improved, but the speakers are the same older ones so I assume they did something with their amplifiers or at least their soundboard at the controls. So they got all their bases covered.

Aloha Stadium and the softball stadium are very much alike. Both falling apart with patchwork jobs left and right costing more than they should. But at least at Halawa, the football players don’t have to worry about blowing out a knee or ankle because of an eroding un-even field situation.

  78. jimmy the lock October 5, 2012 11:23 am

Google is your friend. Ay caramba.

  79. Kevin October 5, 2012 11:25 am

I dont know why people even bother trying to listen to anything coming over the PA system at Aloha Stadium.

  80. Kevin October 5, 2012 11:26 am

Google is everyone’s friend. Perhaps the legislators should present their inquiries to Google at the next session. They might be able to find answers quicker.

  81. gigi-hawaii October 5, 2012 11:27 am

    well, see ya later, alligator.

  82. Kevin October 5, 2012 11:30 am

I never understood “see you later alligator”.

Was there a time in this country where just because stuff rhymed, it became “clever” to say?

Doesn’t make sense. I mean depending on the situation, do you really want to see an alligator later? What if it was a near-deadly encounter in some Florida swamp? Now, if you were at the zoo, then yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing an alligator later.

  83. Capitolist/WassupDoc October 5, 2012 11:39 am

    Just announced:

THE NFL AND HTA DESIGNATES PRO BOWL COMMITTEE

HONOLULU-The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the state’s tourism agency, in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), is pleased to announce the designation of a Pro Bowl Committee comprised of Hawaii business and community members. The Committee is chaired by Dr. Edison Miyawaki, a local business leader and limited partner of the Cincinnati Bengals. The goal of the Committee is to support the NFL’s continued investment in Hawaii by providing unparalleled experiences for residents, visitors, players and their families, NFL representatives and team owners during Pro Bowl Week in 2013.

The 49-member Committee will play a key role in developing and implementing programs to increase Pro Bowl Week and Game Day attendance, generate broad media exposure, increase community engagement and support, raise military involvement, create business partnerships and opportunities, enhance player and family experiences, and develop inbound travel packages for domestic and international visitors. The Committee member list is attached.

“We are pleased to welcome the Pro Bowl back to Hawaii in 2013 and look forward to working with the Pro Bowl Committee to enhance overall resident and visitor experiences during the week,” said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the HTA. “This event has been home to Hawaii for more than 30 years and is very special to us. The Pro Bowl and events attract visitors and their spending, provides worldwide exposure for our Hawaiian Islands, creates economic opportunities for local businesses, and generates social, recreational and charitable benefits for residents and especially our youth.”

The 2012 Pro Bowl attracted 48,423 attendees (18,873 of which were visitors), contributing $25.3 million in visitor spending and $2.8 million in tax revenues. Pro Bowl Week events generated an additional estimated $4 million in local economic activity, while annual NFL charitable donations exceeded $100,000 in 2012. The Pro Bowl broadcast also reached 12.5 million viewers nationwide.

Committee chair Dr. Miyawaki’s experience with the NFL dates back to the 1970s when he established an NFL training camp for local athletes aspiring to play professional football. In 1994, he became the first Japanese-American to purchase minority ownership of an NFL franchise. For the past two decades, Dr. Miyawaki has played an instrumental role in securing the Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

  87. Pauoa Boy October 5, 2012 12:06 pm

Excited to see Fonua in there banging heads. Wish Vele would’ve remained as a linebacker but if he’s on the field playing FB, then it’s all good. Would be fun to watch a Kahuku/Farrington combo knocking heads together.

USD – people don’t call it the University of Spoiled Daughters for nothing…

  99. Dennis Halloran October 5, 2012 12:44 pm

I was in the fourth graduating class of USD, when it was a Men’s College. Great memories as most of us were transfers with checkered pasts. I still serve on the Alumni Board and have a room with my name on it in the Alumni Building donated by an old roommate. Buses are really a tribute to when we only traveled by bus to games in a 30 year old Flexible Bus. I would have stayed in San Diego, but not many jobs in 1960 and the Draft loomed for me. Ironically, you can’t beat the food at the Dining Facility on Campus of USD and public is welcome. Homecoming is there tomorrow but still nursing my wife’s skin cancer dressing, so I’ll miss USD and UH games. Going to Mater Dei HS homecoming tonight however. May all the good guys win!

Yes, I am one of those rich alumni of USD

    Guess what, chicken butt.

    You wish, jellyfish.

    Winnah winnah, chicken dinnah.

    No worry beef curry.

    Watch your lip potato chip.

    No can, rubber band.

    All pau, for now.

Yup… gangnam style… I can see ST going on that one…

Someday I may try exercising… walking to the stadium and up to the yellow section once a month is about it for me…

  120. Kevin October 5, 2012 1:10 pm

    The NFL helped/authorized this committee?

Is this the real committee or just replacements?

  121. LizKauai October 5, 2012 1:10 pm

  123. jimmy the lock October 5, 2012 1:11 pm

Save money, no need go gym, no need buy special diets or supplements. Just need to be motivated. Take portions of P90X and Insanity. Tone it down for the less mobile person. Just one hour a day is all it takes. Do your P90X/Insanity for 30 minutes, then go walking for 30 minutes. There, all pau. Now enjoy life and do over tomorrow.

  124. LizKauai October 5, 2012 1:11 pm

  127. Kevin October 5, 2012 1:14 pm

That gangnam thing is FAR from amusing. I appreciate absurd and off the wall stuff for laughs but what the hell???

Reminds me of that American Idol ratings ploy William Hung.

  128. jimmy the lock October 5, 2012 1:15 pm

Oh, forgot. You can google P90X and Insanity and take exercise ideas from that. Only cost is PC/laptop and wifi. Or you can Bing it.

  129. jimmy the lock October 5, 2012 1:19 pm

I’m amused with Gangnam style, just because I can do it. 😆

We are here in San Diego for the UH Football game against San Diego State.

We started in Provo Utah for the UH Football Game against BYU.

The day after the BYU game we were in the Hotel Jacuzzi with the mother of the BYU Freshman Running Back

Jamal Williams , who ran for about 155 yards. She said that her son is only 17 years old.

Stayed in Las Vegas for a few days before driving to San Diego.

    Weather here is great.

Gasoline here is more expensive than Hawaii (around $4.64 per Gallon and going up daily.

  207. madeinhawaii October 5, 2012 5:47 pm

One of my big fears is that this contract we entered to with the MWC may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Did they just sell our team out? With the Olympic sports in the Big West, and all the burden of these additional expenses to the MWC, the profitability of football is minimized. If ticket sales continue to drop and we lose the Sheraton Bowl… it may ultimately be in the best financial interest of UH to drop football completely.

  208. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 5, 2012 5:48 pm

I suppose.. and then we’d have to play the likes of HPU.. Chaminade… Hilo regularly to cover some of the travel expenses… BUT if BB and Baseball become the “Only” game in town… will they generate more?

Furthermore… the State would save an estimated $300 million if they don’t have to build a new stadium.

  223. PolyMom October 5, 2012 6:14 pm

Dennis– who went to USD…the girls from UCSD like myself loved when you guys would invite us to your football games. The USD guys always treated the girls to dinner after the games. And no hanky panky. Our Moms back in Hawaii loved you guys for being gentlemen. Since UCSD did not have a football team…sorry nerd school it was USC games to watch Mosi Tatupu or USD games. Thanks for the memory of those fun times.

Kind of enjoying the game. Waiting to see who blinks first.

  226. Shoko October 5, 2012 6:26 pm

    223. Kind of made me chuckle when you mentioned HPU (no offense to HPU folks). Now Chaminade might be the UH MBB ticket to the Maui classic. You could probably throw in BYU-Hawaii as well.

Not sure if it would generate more playing those teams. However, it would create an in-state rivalry. And thats a good thing.

  236. Dennis Halloran October 5, 2012 7:14 pm

    Poly Mom,

There was no UCSD when I was in College. It was Cal Western, San Diego State and USD.

A lot of people don’t realize that San Diego is the 3rd biggest college town in USA now especially counting 2 huge JC’s. and 4 law schools.

USD was so small in 1958 that our entire Men’s College had a joint social event with Alpha Phi at San Diego State. That really ticked off the College for Women that outnumbered us 2 to 1

  237. Moocher October 5, 2012 7:27 pm

so a mobile quarterback, quick release, quick decision making quarterback chucky K couldn’t get it done against BYU

to all those that said shroeder is the problem and needed to be replaced by a more mobile quarterback who gets rid of the ball quickly-well…you saw tonite that the quarterback is not the problem. BYUs defense is that good where it will stop the run and that makes it difficult for receivers who then cannot get separation.

the other thing…aranda is looking like a genius right about now with the aggie D.

i don’t think people jump off the bandwagon. during the ride some people sit quietly and patiently and others make noise. but we all want the same thing in the end and are all trying to get to the same place in the end.

  238. madeinhawaii October 5, 2012 7:32 pm

    Moocher…

Are we talking about the same Utah State team? You want to compare UH against Utah State.. Bwahahahahahaaaaa! .. I saw a Utah State team that scored against BYU.. did UH? I saw a Utah State team that stopped BYU more often than not and kept them to a measly 6 points… I saw a Utah State team that was in the game until the final minute… They played a very respectable game on defense… and did one better than us on Offense…

    represents to the nation now.

  242. islandman October 5, 2012 8:04 pm

    Boise 7, BYU 6 ; BYU 6, Utah St. 3; BYU 47, Hawaii 0.

Boise has tough defense; BYU has tough defense; Utah St. has tough defense with D. Aranda as coordinator. Hawaii needs improvement on defense and offense.

  243. Moocher October 5, 2012 8:05 pm

    MIH

what you saw were the aggies scoring 3 more then we did…with a mobile quarterback, a quick decision making quarterback and a quarterback with a lively arm. hence…blame shroeder becase he apparently is none of those??? seriously???

I say credit BYUs D more then blame shroeder. because if people want to knock shroeder on those 3 things and then you have a quarterback in chucky K who has all those things and a better O-line to boot and only gets 3 more then we did…it says the quarterback is really not the bigger of the problem yet so many threw shroeder under the bus.

and what you also saw was just how bad kaumeyer is and how good aranda was/is. let’s hope coach K can dial it in.

what you saw once again was a great BYU D that mobile quarteback or not they will hold you back. Boise didn’t score an offensive touchdown, hawaii didn’t, and neither did the aggies…yet so many chose to blame shroeder???

i’m not talking about anything else except for the argument that shoreder has got to go.

  244. Moocher October 5, 2012 8:19 pm

to be clear, i don’t believe shroeder is to blame where some are asking to remove him. we aren’t that good to be throwing the quarterback under the bus just yet…

  250. NinjaWarriorTurtle October 5, 2012 9:25 pm

No one is blaming Schroeder. Well, most people aren’t. The offensive line had some leaks which led to hurries and sacks. Give credit to BYU’s defense. What a surprise that Anae has retired due to a bad knee.

  251. Old School Dave October 5, 2012 9:27 pm

Whoops. Info on Anae already posted. Sorry about that.

Read that ticket prices for the Utah-USC game yesterday ranged from $99 to $1200. The students get in for free, though. Great student support there.

It’s a sad day when we compare ourselves with Utah State or SJSU and think they play better football than we do. What next, NMSU?

  253. kev-1 October 5, 2012 9:40 pm

    SAWARRIOR,

Yes, Penn fights Rory in December I think. It will be on the Fox card. One of many huge fights slated for live tv. It will be a tough fight for BJ. Rory is talking mad $hizzle, though, and that does nothing but motivate Penn. I recall when Florian talked smack, BJ gave him dirties. Same thing with Diego Sanchez. I hope he does the same with McDonald, but that guy is pretty big and nasty. I am hoping for the motivated BJ.

  254. kev-1 October 5, 2012 9:40 pm

Any university… ANY university with an athletic department at ANY level with an administration that is effective, efficient, and is dedicated to growing their athletic department can and will overtake us unless things change.

Look at Texas State. Just prior to announcing they were joining the WAC originally, they had just completed several millions of dollars of upgrades to their softball and baseball stadiums and their student body along with ADMINISTRATION made several initiatives to raise monies to get to the D1 level. Their administration and student body were in agreement with an increase in the student athletic fees….

The current culture over at Manoa couldn’t manage this in their fantasies.

  260. madeinhawaii October 5, 2012 9:53 pm

  269. Old School Dave October 5, 2012 10:25 pm

In the old WAC, schools like Utah invested a lot of money to improve their facilities, recruiting budgets, salaries of coaches which benefited their football program and they pulled away from UH after 1992. The same thing is now happening at Utah State.

I am starting to think that administration thought getting into a different conference was a quick fix. Now it is becoming apparent to the public that UH is suffering from far more than just conference woes.

    ‘Swhy, send ya’ll + + + POSITIVE THOUGHTS + + + to the football Warriors.

Because if THAT doesn’t work. And, admittedly, if at the end of, what’ll we give it? 5 years, to be conservative about it, for consistent winning seasons? Highly, highly, highly suggest the football team go to a lower division.

$#1(, can have all games down at a slightly expanded/trimmed up Chang field. More student involvement. GO to a Div. II game if you can; you missing out if you’ve not been. Way more fun than being in a hallowed out, rustbucket like Aloha. Games at Ching field would certainly lose its charm for those who like making trouble at Aloha (and, something tells me they’d be very reluctant doing their antics at UH-M itself).

I cannot believe the number of people who miss the “intimacy” and “cozy” atmosphere of Klum gym . . . but, won’t consider the same for football.

UH-M is a known, recognized, respected university. It’ll be far from folding if the football suddenly don’t end up bringing in Div. 1 money.

Gotta consider. That’s it. Oysumi and positive thoughts.

it’s typical of us in hawaii.

compared to a lot of places yeah we are laid back and then we wonder wow…look at those guys now.

for 20 years + we cannot even get a grip on rail.

so many teams came in and out of the wac and we stayed there 30 years???

in the islands we get content so easily and we sit and then we grumble and then we criticize and finally we wake p to make a move and change and then we realize we often have a huge gap to make up…then we settle for less then we should and say….that’s ok.

of corse other teams will pass us by. the only innovator coach we had was hated because he tried to close the gap and push us ahead and in hawaii we not used to that. if we change, we like slow change but in todays world slow change is no change.

The economics of flying teams to Hawaii require a sizable paying crowd to break even…but football has to make millions for UH to be able to afford to pay for all of the other sports (almost all of the rest lose money).

Put it this way: according to the audited UHAD records, Upper Campus provides about $10 mil of UHAD’s $30 mil budget. Upper Campus provides more money to UHAD than the vast majority of schools that play football. If football doesn’t bring in enough money (D-IAA won’t work, their schools cannot afford to fly to Hawaii), then football goes away. If football goes away, 85 female scholarships go away also…killing a lot of women’s sports at UH.

If UH goes from 30,000+ football attendance to 5,000 or 10,000 at Ching Field, the economics no longer will work for football.

I like that you are thinking positive and wishing the best for UH. But wishing for an intimate crowd at Ching Field for UH football games isn’t wishing the best for UH.

Mr. Kobayashi has been a strong and generous supporter to UH. MRC already is way down and it looks like Apple is dropping quickly also if people like Mr. Kobayashi will go public with their discontent.

  296. Garret October 6, 2012 4:26 am

The lower parts of the stadium and its parking lot seemed pretty crowded for the 30k or so that were at the Army game. The parking lot is going to be crazy if they actually have more than 50k in the stadium and the crowd could get loud if SDSU gets a lead.

My biggest wish would be for UH to score on their first drive. The team needs a shot of confidence and the crowd (except for our Hawaii section) needs to be kept out of the game.

A side wish of mine is that the UH fans who go to road games and insist on getting UH fans to make noise while UH has the ball on offense finally realize that it is better to make noise when UH is on defense. I’ve been to about 15 UH games on the mainland and it happens over and over.

    Hi Garret and Maddog50!

  299. mo808 October 6, 2012 4:49 am

Garret, I hope the people who go to away games read your post above! Make noise on defense and only after a touchdown when we’re on offense!

Dennis…that was the year I was born. School in SD was lots of fun. UCSD the year I started was the first school with co Ed dorms. Moms hated that!

Try to catch the new piece on Manti Te’o. But get your Kleenex ready. Great piece done by ESPN on Manti and the race for Heisman.
