Another day in paradise

There are a couple of benefits to the Warriors’ commando-styled approach to the road trip to San Diego.

By departing tomorrow afternoon, the players will have another full day of classes. Also, it gives the coaches an extra day to set the travel roster.

On the bubble is receiver Darius Bright, who resumed practicing yesterday. He missed the past two games because of a shoulder injury. It appeared Bright would need another week of rehabilitation. But yesterday, he took some of the reps with the first unit. If he can play, he would provide a boost for a receiving group that already is without Allen Sampson and Justin Clapp.

The extra day in Hawaii also extends the competition at left guard (Kapua Sai and Chauncy Winchester-Makainai) and strong-side linebacker (TJ Taimatuia and Jerrol Garcia-Williams).

John Hardy-Tuliau is now a floater between safety and cornerback. The move opens the way for more playing time for safety Marrell Jackson. In any case, the Warriors will rotate a lot of players on defense this week.

Happy birthday to one of the friendliest Warriors ever — Gary Wright. Remember when he used to dance to this song during pre-game warmups: Atomic Dog.

    Warriors, keep fighting.

This many true Freshmen in the lineup or at least in the conversation – is it more a reflection of the team’s lack of depth, or the quality of the Chow’s first year recruits?

  18. Stephen Tsai October 4, 2012 7:41 am

If a team is going to activate players, this is probably the best — and latest — time to do it.

There’s enough season remaining that a chance to play in eight games as a freshman is worth relinquishing a redshirt.

  19. jeezy33 October 4, 2012 7:41 am

    17. I think its 3 things.

    1. depth

    2. quality in young recruits

    3. these are chow’s guys he brought in. you have a junior who was recruited under old coaching staff who is playing at the same level as a freshman who you brought in and recruited as a coach, the edge definitely goes to the freshman. More time to develop and more upside moving towards the future.

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid October 4, 2012 7:42 am

    #9 – Mr. Tsai –

    Yep.

Here’s hoping the Warriors can make the most of the injury situations. On the bright side, some of our talented youngsters will be getting playing time as a result.

Not a fan of Greenwood or Apple. And the hearings are bringing to light a lot of sloppy procedures.

Everything will go away if Donovan is reappointed the AD– with or without the search (there is even more political pressure now at the capital to bring Donovan back).

However, it takes away from the fact that Donovan is the single person in the administration almost 100% at fault for the Wonder debacle. And depending on how you feel about Norm Chow, Donovan exercised poor judgement in working against the appointment of Chow as Head Coach (some now think this was great judgment).

Maybe the new blood is what is needed at the moment. These freshmen are all eager to prove their worth and will go hard on the field. Besides they can be molded early, so they don’t develop bad habits. In any case if they are ballin better than a Senior or Junior on the field, than so be it. I mean Samia obviously stood out among the DT’s and is only a Sophomore. Regardless, as long as the boys can play and trust each other, execute, and play with heart than all is good. After re-watching the past couple games a little closer, there were a lot of plays that just weren’t executed properly. I think Coach Chow, Coach Lee, and Coach Kaumeyer really need to make sure the boys get it thoroughly before trying to expand the playbook and making them think too much. There were alot of missed assignments, missed tackles, plays being over-run, etc… Coaches and players just need to keep things tight, focus, and execute the way we know how. Past two games got out of hand, time to bring things back into perspective and buckle down… I think if we play with passion and within ourselves, we can grind out a much needed win. Schroeder, Coach is giving you the opportunity and sticking with you, so time to shine, go out and get something! I think we can edge out a win here.

Does that mean MRC will have to look for a new position for the Chancellor? The damage to UH’s image that these guys are doing is horrific. Dobelle was a saint compared to these two.

  48. jimmy the lock October 4, 2012 9:16 am

Losing 6 lbs over 3 weeks will not dramatically cause noticeable loose skin syndrome.

However, losing 50 lbs. is like losing a 7-year-old in the 50th %-tile range. Lose it slowly and you can minimize the loose skin. Avoid mirrors.

  49. jimmy the lock October 4, 2012 9:17 am

I swear Apple would make a good DJ. Man can he spin.

  50. al October 4, 2012 9:28 am

jimmy…that’s true. about weight loss. but, today studies have been done by medical research such as the univ of florida that prove otherwise that rapid weight loss is even more effective.

the problem with most fad diets is that one loses the weight and then goes off the diet. when they go off the diet they regain all that they lost and then some because the body wants to go back to what you were. its all because you are what you eat and if you don’t take care of what is inside your body chemically you just regress back to what you were before. your body goes in to rewind. however, there are proven methods available.

  51. al October 4, 2012 9:29 am

But I must say, the feisty little football program has probably put the school on the map with future students as well as athletes. Winning on television pays for itself.

In the Navy, if the Commanding Office is ashore for whatever reason, and the ship is in the control of the XO and a new Ensign is at the helm of a ship and it goes aground, the Commanding Officer is held responsible, even though the ship may be thousands of miles away.

  62. Independent Thinker October 4, 2012 10:02 am

I dont want to ever again see another day or time in Hawaii when we pay a college football coach $1 million dollars to coach a college team.

I would also like to see tuition before affordable at all UH campuses. Tuition should be no more than $5000 a year for in state tuition, and no limit for out-of-state. Most families can scrape together $5000 a year to send their kids to school. The proposed $12,000 + per year, for residents, which takes effect soon, will make college out of reach for most families.

If high profile coaches, high pay for admin and coaches = college costs too much for most families, then I say high profile costs too much.

  63. NinjaWarriorTurtle October 4, 2012 10:04 am

Utah St. got a bargain paying Gary Anderson $765K/annual salary to remain with the program thru 2018. He could get much more elsewhere but seems his assistants’ salaries will get nice boosts in the deal. I like a coach that takes care of his staff.

  64. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 10:05 am

    Kapahulukine,

That’s $765K if all the incentives are met. Highly doubtful. I think even Coach Chow has a number of incentives that could boost his pay up considerably, too.

  65. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 10:14 am

    Independent Thinker:

Hawaii shouldn’t be exempt from similar costs associated with all other in-State schools in the States. I believe our tuition is still a bargain and football coaches get paid over 1 million at most institutions of this size competing at the D1 level. Football should pay what it must in order to stay competitive and PROFITABLE otherwise. Same with the other revenue generating sports.

ST – George Allen could have gotten pneumonia if he took a deep breath & got Gatorade in his lungs. Those drink buckets should be sterilized after each use, but if it wasn’t or not real clean, there could be bacteria in the drink. Fluid in the lungs can cause pneumonia if there’s bacteria. One of my coworkers was recently put on a course of antibiotics to prevent pneumonia cuz of the fluid in his lungs.

In this age of endless communications, there is absolutely no excuse for not knowing what your subordinates are doing. If any activity involves any amount off the budget radar as an extraordinary expense e.g. $200,000.00 the President, Chancellor, AD, Legal etc must know about it. Not knowing it is a failure of your fiduciary responsibility and is cause for termination without a buy out.

  83. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 12:00 pm

    AlaWai,

Sadly that’s only $200K… mismanagement, poor judgement, and what have you, have cost UH nearly $1 million more. Who should be terminated for that?

  84. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 12:03 pm

I also want to know why the UH president mansion costs an average of $250,000 a year to maintain? How many homes in Hawaii cost nearly $2 million to maintain over the course of 8 years?

That new athletic training complex to be the biggest in the MWC, students having a record of being favor and voting FOR an INCREASE in their student athletic fee, etc..

The right ingredients for growing a healthy athletic program.

    They are investing… INVESTING.

  88. wafan October 4, 2012 12:22 pm

  91. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 12:37 pm

$200K is what? 0.5% of the athletic budget? Was it a deliberate action to benefit a friend or family member? Or was it an unfortunate incident? If it is an unfortunate incident, is it one of many or the first that one can learn from? Were there safeguards in place prior to that that should have been instituted of was that an oversight that existed prior to existing management? In my business 10% loss due to employee error, negligence, poor quality of materials, accident, erroneous purchases, etc. is expected… I think a similar, but much larger company writes off 20%…. 0.5% doesn’t sound that huge a loss on an annual basis. Got to see the whole picture and see what pans out… how big a difference does it make from previous year expenditures?

  92. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 12:40 pm

Is it the employee or the system that ultimately failed? Every department head overseas the system and makes changes as deemed appropriate, but someone above him or her has to approve those changes… Who makes the final check of the operating system for each department?

  118. AlaWai October 4, 2012 2:56 pm

While its been said that UH should be run like a business, it is in fact a public trust. The administrators are custodians of a multi million dollar trust. As a state institution it must be held to a higher standard. Unlike private business, there is no “write-off.” There is no errors and omissions insurance. Would you entrust .5% of your money to individuals which do not follow good business practices? Would you donate your money to individuals who try to figure things out on there own after they have been defrauded. They then created a smoke screen and victimized other non-responsible employees, failed to inform the HPD and now are playing a legal shell game about the truth. The public trust has been eroded to the point where the school will not only have difficulty raising funds from the community. It will also make it difficult to obtain federal funds and grants. This is a replay of the KSBE Broken Trust tragedy and very disturbing.

  119. tommui October 4, 2012 3:21 pm

    @120 AlaWai

When Regent Carlson testified, he mentioned that certain Regents had their own responsibilities – and I did not know whether there were subcommittees involved with those responsible Regents.

When the Broken Trust (KSBE) took place, each trustee had their own kuleana – his/her own private fiefdom which led to all sorts of problems as trustee A didn’t know what trustee B was doing and C was in the dark as to what A & B were doing.

If the Regents are doing the same …

  120. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 3:41 pm

    AlaWai,

We do that whenever we deposit money into a bank. Banks make a lot of horrendous decisions that quite often lose money. Probably more than 0.5% since the interest they pay these days is practically 0%.

  121. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 3:42 pm

Didn’t Bishop Estate lose hundreds of millions a few years ago? I’m sure they have a number of losing ventures against the ones that make them money.

  123. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 3:44 pm

To me, the real issue isn’t the 200K… it’s what transpired after that. And that involves everyone at the top.

  124. cee808 October 4, 2012 3:45 pm

The mistake to wire transfer the $200K has brought into the light more major concerns about the operation of the university than a like expenditure for a fact finding report. The Senate hearings transcripts should be helpful; but every time someone says they relied on the advice of counsel, start by substituting “we just did what we wanted & have lawyers for any fallout”.

  126. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 3:51 pm

A lot of dirty laundry seems to have been exposed as well… there are hints of personal vendettas being carried out over professional objectivity… Did MRC and Apple have it in for JD from well before the start of this incident. Was he being set up for a fall? Same with Mac… Did MRC have it in for Coach Mack because of his gay slander? What about Hinshaw… why wasn’t her contract extended?

  127. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 3:56 pm

One of the statements by MRC that really got to me was how she defended herself with by saying that the search for a new AD was certainly not as high a priority as the search for a new Dean for the Department of General Sciences.

To me, that’s not really correct. Not if you want the university to compete on the D-1 level. D-2 or lower? maybe.. but not D-1. D-1 requires a dedicated, high level of commitment from the Unversity’s highest levels. If we can’t get that, then maybe we should be competing at a lower level… in all sports because we will never be more than mediocre with an ocassional bright spot.

  128. AlaWai October 4, 2012 3:58 pm

@tommui Scary when the Regents text while they driving the bus and should be watching the road instead.

@cee808 Bernie Madoff said and did the same thing.

  129. tommui October 4, 2012 4:01 pm

#126 cee808 that is why I think Senator Kim and her committee should dwell deeper into the WonderBlunder. More into the circumstances of the wiring of the money. We know who issued it, who authorized it etc but it s the circumstances – the individual steps taken by each individual.

In light of Ferd’s talking to the various coaches – and their response was not wanting JD back but accepting the fact JD was not going to be the AD, to have one appointed right away. But the Chancellor stated that he took the action because no one wanted JD back and there may have been a exodus of coaches if he were sent back as AD –

I would believe that the Committee should look into the search for a new AD even prior to the WonderBlunder and whether the chain of command was followed – and whether this was a University decision or something started by outsiders.

ANd of course since this whole thing seems to have passed through the legal department of the UH, there should be a Q&A there.

The difference between Hawaii fans and the BCS big boys…

Penn State’s vice president for student affairs, became a nonperson when she attempted to discipline half a dozen football players who had been involved in a brawl in which several students were injured and one was beaten unconscious. Football coach Joe Paterno acidly referred to her in a radio interview as “that lady in Old Main” (the central administration building) who couldn’t possibly know how to handle students because “she didn’t have kids.” The coach angrily told Triponey that his players would not cooperate with any investigation because they would not “rat” on each other. Penn State President Graham Spanier asked her pointedly if she really embraced “the Penn State way.” Triponey received threatening phone calls. She was denounced on student message boards. Her house was vandalized. A “for sale” sign was put up in her front yard. She was no longer invited to university events, fellow faculty and administrative staff avoided her, and people turned their backs on her in the supermarket. Spanier successfully pressured her to resign in 2007. Her husband found work at the University of South Carolina’s medical school in Charleston, and the couple moved.

    http://www.truthdig.com/report/page2/the_perversion_of_scholarship_20120730/

Wouldn’t want it to be as bad as all that because looks what happened at Penn State as a result of the fanaticism…. but sports has to be held at a higher esteem by the upper campus admins for it to flourish and compete at the Division 1 level.

tommui & alawai: Regent Matayoshi’s statements that she felt the BOR had no choice but to accept without change Chancellor Hinshaw’s sabbatical deal & Mr. Donavon’s settlement were very troubling. If her view is representative of the rank and file BOR members, it is difficult to believe that this is not by design. After all the questionable justifications and from UH and BOR leadership for why they didn’t (seemingly) follow their own policy, it seems very unlikely that training and a review of policy will result in anything beyond more competent concealment. It seems to me that positive changes will not happen without additional (and more extensive) Senate action.

It is time to be thoroughly disgusted with all the shibai that was heard from the president, chancellor, the lawyers, the regents. Contradictions and lies and excuses shameful. We need change from top to bottom.

  142. Garret October 4, 2012 7:36 pm

No matter how bad things get with these hearings and the exposure of the UH Administration, at least in terms of the football program things aren’t as bad for UH as they are for Idaho…4 game scheduled so far for next season?

Idaho got permission from the State Board of Education in August to set an independent schedule and negotiate with the Big Sky. Idaho had four games scheduled at the time and has not announced any other opponents.

New Mexico State announced last month that it was also going independent in 2013. Athletic Director McKinley Boston said the program has nine games scheduled, including five at home. The Vandals and Aggies could play twice with one game on each campus.

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/2012/10/02/2295311/both-teams-needa-league-home-and.html

  143. Pomai October 4, 2012 7:49 pm

The Idaho fans might not like it but they should try to get in the big sky.

  144. Garret October 4, 2012 7:55 pm

One continual criticism I heard from the UH administration and their “leaks” is that JD wasn’t moving fast enough in the negotiations with the MWC. A theme seems to be that UH heard complaints from the MWC about JD.

If the negotiations weren’t going like how the MWC wanted, maybe that was because JD wasn’t giving them everything they wanted? RF and MRC got a lot of praise for getting UH into the MWC, and the MWC is good for UH. But it shouldn’t be called a “negotiation” when UH gave the MWC everything…PPV money, travel subsidies, even travel subsidies for any school the MWC might add in the future. UH was even told that they would pay travel subsidies to CUSA schools if the MWC joined with them.

If JD had given all that money to the MWC, wouldn’t he be criticized for giving up money that UH couldn’t afford? But since others in the UH leadership negotiated the deal, they don’t worry about the money and say that JD was too slow and not giving the MWC what they wanted. Maybe the reason why the negotiations were taking some time was that the MWC was demanding all of UH’s money and JD didn’t want to give in (or didn’t have that type of money to give up).

Note that JD negotiated the deal with the Big West and UH doesn’t pay travel subsidies to any new Big West members (SDSU, BSU) and last I heard UH has its PPV rights for everything with the Big West.

  145. Garret October 4, 2012 7:57 pm

Idaho has an open invitation to the Big Sky, the Big Sky’s commissioner has been public with the invitation. Getting the minimum required number of home games will be impossible for Idaho in my opinion if they don’t move “home” games to Washington State’s stadium.

  147. el burro sabio October 4, 2012 8:13 pm

    Garret,

I think that Idaho would have great trouble in getting “home” games even if it’s scheduled in Pullman, geography and Wazzou’s schedule works against them. NMSU will have a little easier time surviving independent due to geographical location and their rivalries with New Mexico and UTEP. Very unfortunate if Idaho has to drop down.

  148. el burro sabio October 4, 2012 8:23 pm

Hawaii had a much easier time completing a non-conference schedule 30 years ago. There were games every year against Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, or Pacific. Occasionally, San Jose State, Fresno State, and UNLV were on the schedule as well.

  150. madeinhawaii October 4, 2012 8:38 pm

Just really seems like UH’s admin wanted JD out and set him up for “failure”… limiting his negotiating authority then pushing him aside, taking the credit, while giving away the house. Just how much will UH receive from the MWC for being a football only member that MRC and Freitas were willing to give away upwards of $3 Million each year?

It is through the generosity of alumni school spirit that Universities survive, especially during austere times. It can be scary good, or just plain scary.

  155. Chicken Grease October 4, 2012 9:26 pm

There’s a S. Korean movie — some of you will know this one — called Memories of Murder about a serial killer doing his dastardly deed in the countryside in the 1980s. He (was most probably a “he” with his victims brutally murdered . . . the “r” word done to them) was never caught.

I believe the director of the film — same guy who directed the S. Korean monster movie The Host, by the way — once questioned if the serial killer ever managed to watch this dramatized version based on his evil doings.

    Which brings a Grease to . . . Given the popularity of Warrior Beat . . . wonder (pardon the pun) if the culprit(s) are reading this particular blog of late . . . just for kicks? . . . 😐 . . . ?

Beth does, seemingly, a masterful job of raising the ire and frustration, and boil over point of those they go catch and those that aid those they catch and those who know information on the whereabouts of those they catch. I mean, they play right into it. Beth’s going “nananana boo boo” all that. Insulting ’em and all. Nutty. Heck. If you know a fugitive, why hide him or her? They’re the one gotta face the music.

With reality television, though — a Grease is convinced, ALL reality television (read: don’t be surprised if one day you find out that your vote DIDN’T COUNT, America 😉 — there’s always a catch that makes it less real than what you even watch going on. “Dog” included.
