Observing the 25 limit

By Stephen Tsai on January 30, 2013

An NCAA amendment apparently limits a team to sending out 25 letters of intent for next week’s signing day. The rule was intended to prevent schools from trying to over-sign. It should be interesting to see what happens with grayshirts or players going on church missions. In the past, a player had to wait until his 19th birthday to go on a mission, enabling him to attend college for a year. Now a mission can begin a year earlier. At […]

B-Y … who?

By Stephen Tsai on January 29, 2013

When it comes to the UH-BYU series, to quote the woman in Red: “We are never, ever, ever, getting back together.” The aura of the rivalry had long faded. When every trivia list about the series involved references to Dick Tomey as a UH head coach, well, this one had gone the way of Kona jackets and gold-dipped leaves. And after Kahuku running back Aufaga Wiley makes his decision between the schools, what’s left to discuss? The series’ revival was […]

Bee effort

By Stephen Tsai on January 28, 2013

Norm Chow and a couple of assistant coaches are in the Beehive state — Utah — meeting with recruits today. They are making home visits with their four UH commitments — Ammon Barker, Marcus Kemp, Drake Miller and Elijah Tupai. UH also is believed to be recruiting two other Utah players. The Utah prospects are scheduled to visit Hawaii this weekend. Tomorrow, the UH group heads to Florida. * * * * * Happy birthday to A-Joe.

Home stretch

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2013

The Warriors today complete the penultimate recruiting weekend before entering the home stretch. There were nine prospects in town this weekend. Overall, the Warriors are awaiting decisions from about four prospects. They recently received a commitment from linebacker Jamie Tago of American Samoa. Tago, who is 6 feet 3 and 205 pounds, will sign as a grayshirt and join the Warriors in January 2014. There is a possibility that wide receiver Stacey Howard of San Bernardino Valley College might not […]

UH pro day to SD

By Stephen Tsai on January 26, 2013

UH will conduct its pro day in San Diego on March 19. The past several years, the Warriors would hold pro day at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. They would try to piggyback the event to pro days by UCLA and USC to attract more NFL scouts. This year, the Warriors made proposals to hold pro days in Las Vegas or San Diego. The NFL approved San Diego. The Warriors and San Diego State will serve as co-hosts. […]

UH lands receiver; Dunnachie invited to combine

By Stephen Tsai on January 25, 2013

Yep, it’s true. Alta High wide receiver Ammon Barker has committed to UH. He initially pledged to UCLA. * * * * * Congrats to punter Alex Dunnachie on his invitation to participate in next month’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Dunnachie will be joining long-snapper Luke Ingram and cornerback/returner Mike Edwards. Dunnachie had gone largely unnoticed during the season because of a three-game suspension. A player must participate in 75 percent of a team’s games to be listed in […]

Edwards receives combine invite

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2013

Former UH cornerback/returner Mike Edwards said he has accepted an invitation to compete in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He said he has been asked to report on Feb. 20. Edwards and San Diego State corner Leon McFadden have been training together in Arizona. They became friends during the Mountain West media preview this past summer. * * * * * Trayvon Henderson’s commitment is a boost to this recruiting class, but the Warriors are not done. It appears […]

Sacramento safety commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on January 23, 2013

Trayvon Henderson, a safety from Grant High in Sacramento, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Henderson said he is 6 feet 1 and 195 pounds. He said he projects to play safety, but if he gains more weight, he might move to linebacker. Henderson said he will visit UH next week. But he said he does not need the visit to make the decision. “I’m going to be a Warrior,” Henderson said. “It’s […]
