Waianae’s Kennedy Tulimasealii, Aiea’s Ualesi “Wes” Sale and Kahuku’s John Waa were raised on different parts of Oahu and attended different high schools. But they said they’ve become the best of friends. “We’ve known each other two good years,” Tulimasealii said. “We’ve seen each other at the camps and when we play each other.” Each committed to UH early. “John committed first, then me,” Tulimasealii said. “Then we got more and more people. It was a good thing.” Each held […]

By Stephen Tsai on February 6, 2013

David Fangupo, a defensive tackle/running back from Kealakehe High, today accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. He will sign his letter later this week. * * * * * It was no surprise that running back Diocemy Saint Juste was the first to submit a faxed copy of his letter intent. Wide receiver Marcus Kemp was second. Here are the new Warriors: • Ammon Barker, WR, Alta High (Utah) • Keelan Ewaliko, QB/WR, Baldwin High • Rashaan Falemalu, LB, […]

LB commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on February 5, 2013

The Warriors are close to completing the 2013 recruiting class after receiving a commitment from Darzil Washington, a linebacker from Eastern Arizona College. Washington, who is 6 feet 3 and 230 pounds, initially signed with Texas A&M in 2011. He did not meet the requirements to play for the Aggies. He will have three years to play three UH seasons. Here’s a video of Washington from an Ultimate 100 camp: Washington video. The Warriors are likely to fill two scholarship […]

Law is the flaw

By Stephen Tsai on February 4, 2013

There’s an old saying that if you can’t enforce a law, delegalize it. The NCAA can’t police its recruiting restrictions. The answer, according to a proposal, would be to lift the restrictions. That would mean unlimited texts to prospects, daily brochures and all-out visits. What does this have to do with UH? Texts won’t be a concern because everybody has an unlimited texting plan. But Hawaii’s isolation and UH’s budget will put the Warriors at a competitive disadvantage. The current […]

Kahuku’s Wily chooses UH

By Stephen Tsai on February 3, 2013

Kahuku running back Aofaga Wily told the Warrior he will accept a football scholarship from the Warriors. “I’m going to sign with UH on Wednesday,” Wily said. Wily received offers from BYU, Arizona and Washington. But he said he wanted to play in front of family and friends at UH. “I like the coaches and the program there,” Wily said. Wily’s 4,205 career rushing yards is second most in Hawaii high school football history. He is a three-time All-State player, […]

Class action

By Stephen Tsai on February 2, 2013

This is the final recruiting weekend and, if everything holds, the Warriors will be coming away with their best local recruiting class in several years. According to several in the know, the top three local prospects are Kennedy Tulimasealii of Waianae High, Isaac Savaiinaea of Punahou School and John Wa‘a of Kahuku High. The Warriors received commitments from Tulimasealii and Wa‘a. Savaiinaea, who once committed to Stanford, is now down to UCLA or Texas A&M. Wa‘a probably would have received […]

Clapp retires; Utah lineman chooses Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on February 1, 2013

Receiver Justin Clapp has accepted a medical retirement, head coach Norm Chow confirmed. Clapp, who missed most of the 2012 season following knee surgery, will remain on scholarship and serve as a student assistant coach working with the receivers. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English in December. Clapp will be missed for his grit and wit. He gave his all — including a lung, a couple of ribs and knee ligaments — to the Warriors. * * * * […]

Shutter gets CFL combine invitation

By Stephen Tsai on January 31, 2013

Quarterback Cayman Shutter has been invited to compete in the Canadian Football League’s combine on March 21 in Toronto. Shutter was born in Canada and lived there until he moved to Hawaii on Jan. 1, 2001 — 1/1/01. Shutter has met the CFL’s requirement as a “non-import” as a Canadian citizen who lived in the country for at least five years. A non-import is draft eligible four years after graduating from high school regardless of the player’s eligibility status in […]
