Big future

By Stephen Tsai on January 22, 2013

Defensive tackle Keti Salakielu of Green Valley High in Las Vegas has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. He’s big (6 feet 5, 295 pounds), strong and surprisingly agile. There’s one catch: He’s going on a two-year church mission after graduating high school. He will be playing for the Warriors in 2015. * * * * * Let’s see, the Mountain West Conference was looking to set up two six-team divisions. Hmmm. Mountain West. Mountain. West. Boing! After some […]

Yes, that was the Warrior linemen on the Ching field this morning. The other players had separate workouts the following session. Today is the first day of UH’s offseason conditioning program, a schedule that leads to spring training in March. According to the people in the know, some of the more physically fit were Iuta Tepa, David Griffin and, today’s star, Hunter Thomson. * * * * * Ben Jay is attending a specially called meeting on the mainland today […]

Casting call

By Stephen Tsai on January 20, 2013

The Warriors will stage a tryout for walkons on Feb. 15. Details will be posted later. * * * * * Blinn College wide receiver Vasquez Haynes will delay joining the Warriors until June after the NCAA ruled against a 54-page appeal. At issue was whether a high school class was considered to be a core course. If it were, then Haynes would have been considered an NCAA qualifier coming out of his high school, meaning he would not need […]

Tupa‘i also received offers from BYU, Utah, Utah State and San Diego State. He has notified those coaches that he will be accepting the UH offer. […]

Dejon Allen, a 2012 Dominguez High graduate, has met the requirements to play for the Warriors in 2013. Allen will join in June. He will count toward the 2013 recruiting class. Allen played on both the offensive and defensive lines at Dominguez. He will compete initially as an offensive tackle for the Warriors. Allen signed with the Warriors in February 2012. The Warriors reserved his scholarship while he worked on meeting eligibility requirements. The Warriors will have three offensive tackles […]

It’s not about us

By Stephen Tsai on January 17, 2013

Whenever there is a national story about something unfortunate — or, in yesterday’s situation, bizarre —  involving a resident of the 50th state, we always hear the refrain: This will make Hawaii look bad. The inclusiveness is because this is a state that treats each as his own. It is why many took an interest in Philadelphia when Shane Victorino played there, why we texted support for Jasmine Trias, why we watch Hawaii Five-O on Monday nights. And it is […]

Warriors land WR

By Stephen Tsai on January 16, 2013

Keith Kirkwood, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver from Neptune High in New Jersey, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Kirkwood was a star basketball player before deciding to play football during his senior season in 2012. He averaged more than 22 yards per catch. * * * * * When we first read this, we were bowled over: Deadspin article. * * * * * The relationship between UH and Kahuku began with the […]

Muir gets release

By Stephen Tsai on January 15, 2013

Blake Muir, who started 12 games at left tackle, has requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship. Muir recently underwent shoulder surgery and was not expected to compete in spring training. David Griffin, a transfer who begins classes tomorrow, is expected to compete as the No. 1 left tackle. If Muir had stayed, he probably would have moved to left guard. Ben Dew, Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, Mike Milovale, Kody Afusia and Kiha Sai will be competing at […]
