Everyone's 15 minutes

By Stephen Tsai on May 6, 2013

This week, head coach Norm Chow has scheduled 15-minute meetings with each of his players. The meetings will involve player evaluations, critiques of the staff and goals. * * * * * Tight end Ethan Watanabe, who redshirted as a freshman in 2012, will be going on a church mission. * * * * * Placekicker Tyler Hadden, who underwent double-hernia surgery earlier in the year, is set to be cleared to work out. He did not participate in spring […]

Rainbow Wahine and HUGS

By Stephen Tsai on May 5, 2013

There are many options for a college student on a Saturday evening before finals week. Members of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team spent their free time attending a monthly HUGS dinner. HUGS — Help, Understanding and Group Support — is an organization that provides support for seriously ill children and their families. There are many gifts. One of those most meaningful is time. * * * * * Good luck to former UH quarterback Cayman Shutter, who is eligible for […]

Harry situation

By Stephen Tsai on May 4, 2013

We all know that know-it-all newcomer who mistakes Hawaii’s laid-back lifestyle for indecisiveness. Heck, I was that guy. And then one day in social studies, while acting like how that guy acts, I got hit on the head with a wad of paper. It proved to be metaphorical. “Hey, Katonk,” Harrison Kawate whispered. And then Harry, who would become one of my best friends and the MC at my wedding, gave the talk that all newcomers should receive. I’m reminded […]

GAs line

By Stephen Tsai on May 3, 2013

There is no timetable on when (or if) the Warriors will fill two openings on their staff. The NCAA allows each Division I team as many as four GAs and two interns. Jordan Wynn (offense) and Jared Vanderbeek (defense) are the GAs. Ed Ta‘amu (offense) and Lance Samuseva (defense) are the interns. If the Warriors were to  decide to  hire additional GAs, they need to initiate the process beginning with advertising the openings. * * * * * * If […]

End of the Rainbow?

By Stephen Tsai on May 2, 2013

The Letterwinners’ Club sent this letter to the AD: Dear Ben: May 1, 2013 As members of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Letterwinners Club Board of Directors, we request that you hold off on changing the nicknames of the University of Hawaii athletic teams. This hasty decision has caused considerable divisions among the supporters of UH Athletics. You claimed that you consulted with all your coaches – all of whom work for you. However, you failed to consult with […]

Cup runneth out

By Stephen Tsai on May 1, 2013

Half full or half empty? On the athletic department’s third floor — home to most of the coaches’ offices — the coffee cup is empty. Until recently, a company donated coffee. But times are hard, and the company no longer could afford the donation that equated to about $5,000 a year. Yes, that was a hill of beans. There have been e-mails exchanged that address the problem. For now, please excuse the Walking Dead. * * * * * * […]

Price of spring football

By Stephen Tsai on April 30, 2013

After 15 on-field sessions spread over five weeks, there wasn’t much more to be said of the Warriors’ spring training. So for the final team meeting of the spring, the podium was turned over to a guest speaker — Mike Price, former UTEP and Washington State head coach. Price retired as UTEP’s head coach in December. Price’s son Aaron is the Warriors’ offensive coordinator. Mike Price and Norm Chow have been friends for decades. They first met when Price was at […]

Empty closet

By Stephen Tsai on April 29, 2013

The NBA’s Jason Collins today became the first active pro athlete in one of this country’s major sports to disclose he is gay. Newsworthy? Of course. It is especially significant for victims of bullying and discrimination. But shocking? Nah. Of course, there are gay athletes. There also are gay pastors, PTA presidents and CPAs. Gays have played, coached  and administered at UH. What was significant today was that  a player coming out was not the lead sports story. (Tim Tebow’s […]
