Dunnachie is "still negotiating"

By Stephen Tsai on April 28, 2013

Former UH punter Alex Dunnachie has been invited to try out with the New York Jets at the May 12 mini camp. But he said he has not received a contract offer and he is “still negotiating with a number of clubs.” As for Internet reports of a possible deal, Dunnachie said: “People get hold of things that may not necessarily be true.” Dunnachie was not selected in the seven-round NFL draft that concluded yesterday.

Aftermath

By Stephen Tsai on April 26, 2013

Here’s what we learned from the spring game: • The offense can get vertical. • Taylor Graham has a strong arm. He also has the shooter’s mentality in which he doesn’t let previous plays affect current throws. • Chris Gant has emerged as a gimme-the-ball receiver. The Warriors spent the offseason recruiting play-making receivers. There was one on campus all along. • Mike Andrade and Hunter Thomson were supposed to be fill-ins on the defensive line. They proved they deserve […]

Spring game

By Stephen Tsai on April 25, 2013

The Warriors’ spring training ends with today’s first Black-White game. It will be a chance to watch some of the Warriors’ younger players, such as quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, fullback Marcus Langkilde, defensive tackles Hunter Thomson and Mike Andrade, cornerback Anthony Pierce and linebacker Julian Gener. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at Ching Field. The unusual opening time is because of the lights. In constructing sand volleyball courts on the mauka side, the row of lights were disconnected and relocated. […]

Spring game: Choosing sides

By Stephen Tsai on April 24, 2013

There was a lot to digest entering last night’s draft for the Warrior spring game. “Commissioner” Norm Chow had ordered so much food from Ige’s that the start of the draft was delayed by an hour. The jan-ken-po method  (rock, paper, scissors) was used for pick selections. A confidentiality agreement prohibits revealing who won the most, uh, hands. But Lewis Powell, who is head coach of the Black team, credited “Jedi mind tricks” for each of his successes. The Spring […]

Tuesday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on April 23, 2013

It was a successful spring practice for the offense this morning in Manoa. The 90-minute practice featured situation drills involving the red-zone attack and two-minute offense. After the practice, UH coach Norm Chow confirmed that Jeremy Higgins and Sean Schroeder will be co-No. 2 quarterbacks exiting spring training. (Schroeder is recovering from back surgery and will be at full health in early July.) Taylor Graham will remain No. 1. Ikaika Woolsey still is in the picture; Chow said the competition […]

Feeling the draft

By Stephen Tsai on April 22, 2013

Strategy rooms have been abuzz as football coaches prepare for this week’s draft. After video reviews, evaluations, interviews and discussions, it all comes down to this: Rock, paper or scissor. The jan-ken-po winner between “head coaches” Chris Naeole and Lewis Powell will determine who gets the first pick in tomorrow’s draft of UH football players for Thursday’s Spring Fling intrasquad game. The way it works is each position already has been split into two groups. If one coach decides to […]

Weekend replay

By Stephen Tsai on April 21, 2013

It’s 11 a.m. You look left. You look right. Left. Right. There are no cars in sight. Then you cross the street. Tweet! Tweet! You’re cited for jaywalking. You argue: No harm, no foul. Sorry, but rules are rules, after all. It’s 14-13 BYU in the fifth set in Provo. UH’s Jace Olsen appears to tie it with a kill. But the down ref rules that earlier in the play, UH middle blocker Nick West’s foot crossed the line under […]
