Who's the boss?

By Stephen Tsai on May 14, 2013

It was a defining moment when UH decided to call all of its men’s teams the “Rainbow Warriors.” What is known, definitely, is that it is the community’s power brokers — not the UH administrators, not the people — who make the decisions. AD Ben Jay was correct, in February, when he decided there needed to be one name for the men’s teams  His handling of the situation, two months into the job and without getting more input, was too […]

Pollard cut

By Stephen Tsai on May 13, 2013

According to the Jets’ Web site, former Warrior receiver Royce Pollard has been released. He was on the practice squad last year. * * * * * Picture Zach Randolph, the Memphis Grizzlies’ 6-foot-9 post player. Now picture somebody jumping completely over Randolph, with a half-inch to spare. That somebody was Layton (Utah) High’s Marcus Kemp, who won the 5-A Regional Championship this past weekend in Syracuse, Utah. Kemp won the high jump (6-9 1/2) and long jump (22-7). Kemp, […]

WarriorNY gallery

By Stephen Tsai on May 12, 2013

I was out and about yesterday — OK, mostly when I wasn’t out I was knocked out — so I apologize for not posting WarriorNY’s photos of the Jets’ training camp. I’m grateful he posted on the comments thread, but I thought we’d give him proper placement today. Here’s Mike Edwards: * * * * * Here’s Royce Pollard: * * * * * And Alex Dunnachie: * * * * * I was thumbing through a First Hawaiian Bank […]

Graduation Day; Clay rewarded

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2013

Congrats to the Warriors participating in today’s graduation ceremony. If you can’t see the pictures, well … that’s because after being stuck for 45 minutes between the Punahou and UH exits, I figured, ah, I’m going home. But Na Koa Mike will post links to the photos. Congrats again. * * * * * Every day I go to UH I’m amazed that the freeway on-ramp is right before the off-ramp. * * * * * Congrats to Charles Clay, […]

Talking the talk

By Stephen Tsai on May 10, 2013

Quarterback Andrew Manley, who recently received his requested release from his New Mexico State scholarship, has initiated discussions with UH about the possibility of playing for the Warriors. The Warriors still are determining if they have an available initial scholarship (they’re limited to 25 a year), meaning Manley might have to be a walk-on during the fall semester. He also would need to gain admission into UH. But those are questions that will be answered in the coming weeks. For now, […]

Stepping up to the mic

By Stephen Tsai on May 9, 2013

With Darnell Arceneaux’s departure, OC Sports is seeking a color analyst for its telecasts of Warrior football games. Suggestions, anyone? Arceneaux, a former Saint Louis School head coach and quarterback, recently was hired as Occidental College’s quarterbacks coach. Former Kahuku High coach Doug Semones is the Tigers’ head coach, and former UH coach/center Brian Smith is the offensive coordinator. Occidental is a Division III school in Los Angeles. The Tigers play their home games at Jack Kemp Stadium. * * […]

What's next for Manley?

By Stephen Tsai on May 8, 2013

Because of what’s reported as a family situation, former Leilehua quarterback Andrew Manley has requested — and received — a release from his New Mexico State scholarship. What’s next for Manley, who will be a fourth-year junior this fall but might be eligible for an exemption allowing him to transfer without redshirting? And do those plans involve UH? * * * * * While the search initiates for a successor to UH president MRC Greenwood, it is important to remember […]

What's next?

By Stephen Tsai on May 7, 2013

The UH president is retiring. The UH-Manoa chancellor is being, well, like someone who needs a self-editing button. So what’s next for the UH athletic department? It would be in the best interest of the department and the school to hire a sports-friendly president. Division I sports is good for a community that does not have a pro-sports team. It’s helpful in increasing enrollment and raising money for the school. For all of the controversy, MRC Greenwood had the athletic […]
