After listening to the 5 Senior Na Koa Wahine list their top reasons for playing softball for UH, one can say without question that they played with pride and humilty. They all stated how much they loved to represent not only the University of Hawaii, but the entire State!

So much of what they accomplished was added to the record books. Kelly Majam is a fine example of the record setting performance these women posted. They, along with their supporting teamates, played with extreme passion. It’s kinda sad to see them have to bring it to a close.

So let’s celebrate those fabulous five Seniors and wish them well. We can all look forward to coach Coolen building another winning team. There is no doubt that he will continue to recruit and develop the next winning group of Na Koa Wahine!

I hate senior days. I hate them even more when you get to know their families and get to see these great kids more often than some do. You already invest emotions when you simply cheer for them, add in all the other stuff and its a heart-wrenching day.

After everything died down and everyone was eating and relaxing, I asked Coach Coolen, “how do you go thru this every year?”

He paused, and said you have to it just comes and you are never ready for it when it happens. He said he was thinking about it all day and even then, when the time comes, it just comes and you find out you can never really “prepare” for it.

I know Kelly Majam got the most press over the years and deservingly so, but all of these girls had CLASS and never did anything negatively.

Not sure if this was mentioned in the papers or news, but Parnaby had offers to play professionally after her sophomore season, but immediately shut those offers down. I dont think people understood how much she loved it here and loved playing for UH. She was going to finish no matter what.

Jessica has a great family behind her and that girl is a beast. Hawaii Nei should be proud that one the most prolific UH players is a local product and Kauai should be may go down as one of the most decorated local girls to have ever played D1 softball and not just at UH, but ANYWHERE.

Brynne Buchanan and Tara Anguiano are just prime examples of how to be good teammates that accepted their roles early on. For Anguiano, playing behind Iwata is like a life sentence, very difficult to see the field, but Anguiano didnt want to transfer out, she loved the coaches, loved the program, loved the school, loved being here. She said she’d continue to work hard and she wouldnt want to go anywhere else. For Brynne, she was really one of the locker room leaders this season. Getting the team organized for various things and being the liason for contacts between the coaches and the rest of the team when they needed to get everyone together for something. Again she was originally Majam’s back up but they found a spot for her in the outfield and she has had some gems out there through out the season.

This really was a balanced class in so many ways and I think the freshmen were really emotional last night, more so than in the past.

5 QUALITY human beings were honored last night and for those non-softball fans.. you people really missed out on watching a special group of student-athletes.

That was a great senior night. The Bow-bombers are back and good timing too as they close out league play and enter the postseason.

Too bad for their senior night they couldn’t do what the basketball teams do and give them a last shot or home run for that matter. I mean for all the records those seniors broke it would only be fitting to give them one last swing out the fences because they probably won’t host in the NCAA tournament. I guess they let it all out during the doubleheader. hehe!

Always tough to say goodbye to the seniors. Especially those with whom one has “connected”. Reliving the moments is at best bitter-sweet. But it is something they will always remember.

Lots of my kids come back and love to reconnect with they program they built. These women will, too, and they will speak fondly of their time as a Wahine.

Kevin, you are a part of their lives . . . forever. That is something very special.

Way to go!

Can’t say enough about the Wahine SB Seniors. Kevin says it all. I know I will cry at the banquet tonight. GO WAHINE!!!

LBSU beat UC Davis, 1-0, today. The Softbows will need to beat Pacific at least once, this coming Friday & Saturday, to win the BWC outright, and gain the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. LBSU finishes the BWC at 14-7, the Softbows stand at 14-4, going into this weekend’s matches with Pacific. Go Softbows!!!!

whitey: Got to see a couple kings landed 15-20lb range from the guide boats. The only thing we killed were some bottle of Rogue brew (hehe) The osprey were diving into the river and got what they were fishing for. Got to try some freshly smoked King my friend did in his Traeger for 10 hours with alder wood. Ritz cracker, cream cheese with the smoked salmon on top. Haole pupu ono too! Got the invite for the “hana hou” next year with a “guarantee” since we will have two days to fish.

Load em up in Alaska in September when you go!

3-prong thanks for the info. will be going to Ketchikan in Sept for 7 days of “Rip The Lips”. But like you said, a few brews is priceless when fishing.

Wahine softballers need one win in the 3-game series against Pacific to clinch the BWC championship and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Regions. LBS finshed strong, taking five of their last six, while Hawaii went 3 and 3. Pacific dropped three to CSF but finds itself in a spoilers role if they can sweep the Bows at home.

First, Bill Simone Field is spacious as it goes 190′ down both lines, 205′ in the alleys and 220′ to CF. If we hit it hard and it finds the gaps, we are in business. If we hit under the ball and lift it high, the ball must travel further to exit the ball park.

Pacific doesnt hit long but they are a contact hitting team batting around .282 with only 18 HRs and a slugging percent of .371. Hawaii has a whopping .520 Slugging percent in a smaller home park. Their OB% is close to ours at .366 and their batters have wiffed 179 times compared to the wahine at 290. This is a game in which Kelly Majam can shine defensively as she has great range and a quick first step to the ball. Hopefully, Jess Iwata can move on her ankle to cover loopers as the spacing of our OF will be different in a bigger park.

The Tigers have stolen 30 bases so they arent going to burn us on base stealing. There is sufficient room in the OF for runners to make doubles or move from 1B to 3B on gapers or score from 2B on clean singles.

What jumps out is their pitching. They have three starters and a frosh closer–Carly Mortenson. Nikki Armagost is their ace with 119 innings and 12 complete games. Tori Shepard and Dani Bonnet each have 8 complete games and have logged 88 and 75 innings respectfully.

So, the wahine are likely to see 4 different pitchers in the series and unless Pacific is out in front, the starters will go 4 and switch. We have noticed this trend in the BWC to rotate pitchers freely so hard slamming teams like Hawaii can not get more than 2 looks in the batting order. Our wahine will have to have wise pitch selection and adapt quickly to get separation.

Finally, we know Kaia will go two games, prolly one on Friday’s DB and the other on Saturdays final, if we have not clinched by then…fans have to be pleased with our wahine cat bounce against UCSB…they will be ready…Cal Bears continue their slide without the injured Jolene Henderson as they have dropped their last seven and lost by 8 runs or more in 4 of those games, yielding an eye popping 74 runs to their conference opponents in that 7-game span. I dont see how they host a region….

Thanks for the inside look into the Wahine Seniors. This senior class will be greatly missed by me. Home they decide to stay here to work and continue to be excellent role models for our children.

Finally got home from the Na Wahine Softball banquet, was a smashing success. Good time had by all. Good to see Kelly Gentle in da house along with Stepahine Ricketts. Was an excellent send off for the five seniors and also the underclassmen.

Coach Bob gave a shout out to you, ST and all the Tsaikos who “adopted” Na Wahine. He and the team are grateful that we did. Good job to those who supported Na Wahine Softball.
