Nicknames are not confusing, but rather necessary, when differentiated by gender. But by sport for men’s teams is silly. There is little appeal in calling women’s teams ‘Warriors.’

btw…coach chow was very appreciative in our efforts to support the staff with coffee. he went on and on about coffee, football, and hawaii. he truly was surprised at the wb’s tsaikos and apologized for not being an avid reader.

small kine trivia: coach chow is not a coffee drinker but knows how important it is for the coaching staff’s morale.

wow. this is quite an impressive, young staff assembled here.

Two thoughts before I hele on:

1. Title lX and gender equity does not refer to team names; it’s all about opportunity. Some wiseacre will probably pop-up and say, “if that’s the case, let’s be truly ‘equal’ and make all teams co-ed.” C’mon, let’s not waste our time going down that sorry path. Gender is an obvious crossroads where differentiation makes sense. If we took a survey of ALL female athletes in Hawaii on their preference of a team name. How many of us seriously think they would vote for a male-associated name? SERIOUSLY.

2. There are a few sports whose seasons overlap for males and females (ex basketball). I personally like being able to tell right away who’s being the topic of discussion. But that’s just my personal preference.

There is one problem with “Rainbow Warriors” and that is that the term is used in so many other ways– as the name of the Greenpeace ship sunk by the French, in reggae songs from Jamaica, the Rainbwo state with the title “Rainbow Warrior” and “warrior for the Rainbow”. Songs about the Greenpeace vessel, and songs about the fight for rights of the LGBT. If you search itunes you will probably find several of these songs and albums for sale– probably at least 20-25 references.

I still wear my old aloha shirt with the UH Rainbow on its sleeve.

I had Tommy Kaulukukui as one of my HPE teachers and go back when it was RAIN …BOWS … echoing in the Old Termite Palace.

Then June Jones came in as coach and we began to use the nickname “WARRIORS”. That was a long time ago and a new generation came about cheering for the WARRIORS.

Maybe that was the time to rant about the team’s nickname.

I like the Pontiac muscle cars and the bullet-nose Studebakers.

But this too has passed.

We have complained before about the downtown crowd/legislators interfering with the running or interfering with athletics at the UH.

We have complained about upper campus trying to run or interfering with the athletic department.

Right or wrong, we cannot have the Athletic Department run by well-meaning committees.

Let Ben Jay do the job for which he was hired.

And cheer on the WARRIORS, the BOWS, the NA WAHINE – your choice – but let the man run the department without a bunch of well-meaning consultants screaming on the sidelines.

My two-cents.

That leads to the question of whether the UHAD will provide “something” individual to each member like we did for several years. Last year, I believe Jim D got them a gift.

and then it leads to the wahine “water polo” who scored a BSC championship last weekend. Hope they are also recognized by UHAD.

How to start a Marketing campaign…for coffee for the coaches.

First get the Tsaid’s involved..

Second…make i easy to give.. so the whole state can participate.

Third..Have a simple donor slip….

The Plan…

Have Tasiko’s or ne one that wants to get involved..and help go to their local market..

small store etc… and ask if they would put up a promotion signage in the coffee section.. with buy one … give one.. and when the customer buys coffee… regardless of brand… take to the check out ..where they will fill out the donation slip with name…(or can leave blan)k)

with small printed note… for the coacking staff, University of Hawaii..

Now imagine these are in all Foodland/Sack and Save stores in Hawaii… Sum on on here must know Jenai Suillivan… they are great supporters of most all things related to Hawaii… and have a great family history of “Sully” and his generosity to the peopleof Hawaii… then repeat this 20 or more times… add to the list.. Star Markets… Costco…Wal Mart…Safeway… etc etc etc.. you get the idea…. and do this for all islands.. must have Taiko’s all islands.. and you will see people from all walks of like… willing to donate..as now it becomes easier.. for them to give.. Have young brothers donate the shipping… or Hawaiian Airlines or even FEDEX…or Brown trucks people….I am sure so many would like to help and so many more would want to give…but you have to make it easy and simple and in their back yard to participate…sure it will take lots of work.. but have a Tsaiko’s all islands…(have one here in manila also he he he) the super markets and stores would dearly love it ..as it will bring shoppers to their stores… one stipulation I would personally make is..to ask “Norm” if he would not mind sharing the “1,000” cans of coffee.. with all the coaches to be split percentage wise among all sports…. How about getting the Kona Coffe makers involved.. or Yuban….Hills Bros… etc… think they would help… then make sure that the Tasik’s keep this staff from all islands.. involved.. for the next campaign…run the campaign for 2 or 3 weeks only… should be enough..and the coffee companies maybe willing to pay for the printing if they can put their logo on the….sign in the coffee section..and keep it simple and make sure … all major ones are involved…don’t make it exclusive. only.. can use the same are work for all.. and just change the logo of … the coffee company.. ..

Look what this does…

Brings all the coaches together at UH cuz their field will be getting benefits they maybe cannot get on their own..

Brings the community together…for the UH…all sports ..

Brings the various companies together helping all sports at the UH…

Brings the Tsaiko’s together as a group and make them stronger on all Islands..

Bring our Ohana from all Islands together….helping in their small way..

IMHO this coffee thing is ridiculous, what is the average salary of the Head Coaches? You mean to tell me that they can’t afford to buy coffee and then each person who gets a cup of coffee puts in $.25 to buy the next can. Come on now…………….

Honestly,

The Warrior and Rainbow Wahine work in the case of Hawaii. For one is there another FBS/D1 schools in the State of Hawaii? Or another school that represents Hawaii on the FBS/D1 level? No and No. Nobody going to confuse the teams that play for University of Hawaii, men or womens by the names Warrior and Rainbow Wahine. Because Hawaii only has 1 school that represents Hawaii at the FBS/D1 level period, unlike other States that have multiple schools playing at the FBS/D1 level.

But the football team name change was and is a nessecary evil because of the non Hawaii population perception of the relationship to the word “Rainbow” as refering to something else that it clearly doesn’t stand for. But that misunderstanding can lead to negative outcomes for the program and fans. Negative as in fights with other fans for using “Rainbow” in that misunderstood way or recruits not wanting to attend because of association of the word “Rainbow” in male sports and the examples are plentyful about the name Rainbow. As ridiculous as this sounds to most all of us University of Hawaii fans, it does have merit to just name the mens sports Warriors and the womens sports Rainbow Wahine.

I think this is a battle of the older die hard Hawaii fans wanting to re-live and re-associate the past, that by no fault of anybody has gotten twisted into a word play that should have never been, but did. And are pitted against the younger die hard Hawaii fans who want to keep the name as Warrior for mens sports thats is more universally accepted world wide and doesn’t carry a “loaded misunderstanding”.

First World Problems

The SOFTBOWS can WIN the BWC TITLE, if they sweep Santa Barbara. Fullerton St. beat Pacific, in the 1st game of a Double Header, 5-3. Pacific is now 4 games back in the loss column, along with Long Beach St.

coaches salary are some of the lowest in the nation for a wannabe d-1 program. some are still living in the offices. half the staff will be grad students, interns, and volunteers.

some of the higher paid coaches tend to take care of those guys with this and that.

okay, so the story goes that there was a coffee distributor who donated around $5k a year in coffee. but, times are hard and they had to pull back their generosity.

surely, you’d think that the ad department would at least provide coffee. i am guessing that the ad is not a coffee drinker.

the good news is that the distributor left the coffee makers behind.

Foldgers coffee at costco is pretty cheap. It may not be the best tasting in the world, but it does its job and for “free work-room coffee” I think it is fine.

Looks like this coffee concern isn’t a one time deal. Perpetual.

Arguing over Rainbows or Warriors is wasting a lot of energy for nothing.. It’s like arguing about Coors Light or Bud Light, I definitely prefer one over the other, but just give me beer and I’m happy.

No problem in keeping the “H”. The H was well executed and over time, whether ten years or fifty years, it too shall be modified to represent UH. The old rainbow menehune logo was amateurish by art standards and it reflect on those who approved it. I thought the UH with the rainbow tail was a good logo but it doesn’t have the more wider marketing appeal as the H. Good art is critical to product marketing. Rainbow Warriors ties both sides of the community together. Why not, Mr. Jay?

one head coach is already buying dinners, certificates, gas cards and the like for the staff that are either ga’s, volunteers, interns, and students.

tough to see somthing that would boost the morale of these younger coaches/volunteers/students such as having coffee or not having coffee. what business does not have a coffee station for their employees?

especially, when the head of the department(not a head coach) has his office completely renovated at probably ten years worth of coffee.

the coffee will benefit all of the staffs not just football.

like one guy said, its up to you, no one is shaming you into donating or not. i have met some of these fine young people and you know what they don’t do it for money. most are underpaid or not at all. i’ve coached, though not at this level, but, its no different from any level that the amount of hours you put in is no less than double the hours that the average man puts into his career.

for me, i appreciate their efforts and if i can treat them to some coffee then it is a feel good for me. it is in the same breath that i have volunteered for years to feed the homeless.

side note and congrats to Campbell HS D1 boys baseball and D1 girls softball teams for winning the 2013 OIA titles. can’t recall it ever happening but I maybe wrong.

I will always be a rainbow as that was the symbol that drew me to Hawaii and something very special in my lifetime experiences and memories. I see it as a symbol of Manoa and the special nature of our school and teams. We all learned about this as our unique sports tradition. But, that was my day and life and times and I do not have reason or intent to push my views on the future generations of athletes and fans. College sports is now a big business, and what seems to be happening is a “branding” and “market positioning.” I have not seen evidence, but am assuming that the name change, is a pure business decision. AD please spell out the objective, strategies, targets and tactics of this change. Am sure it was not a spur of the moment decision. Was there research, polling, focus groups that initiated this directive? I know when this is explained properly, all of us old Rainbows will buy in.
