End of the Rainbow?
The Letterwinners’ Club sent this letter to the AD:
Dear Ben:
May 1, 2013
As members of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Letterwinners Club Board of Directors, we request that you hold off on changing the nicknames of the University of Hawaii athletic teams. This hasty decision has caused considerable divisions among the supporters of UH Athletics. You claimed that you consulted with all your coaches – all of whom work for you. However, you failed to consult with your booster clubs and your key corporate supporters before making this decision.
When you met with us in January, you stated that you were in the process of evaluating the athletic department. You mentioned that you were contemplating recommended changes to nicknames for all the athletics teams. You also said that you would be moving slowly on this and would seek our input and the input of others before moving forward on any changes to the nicknames. However, a couple of weeks later, your public announcement that all men’s programs would be renamed the Warriors caught many by surprise.
At our February board meeting, it was decided to send you this letter. However, the Board wanted to give you the opportunity to meet with us to discuss your decision. After more than two months of attempting to meet with you, we are disappointed that you have refused to meet with us to discuss this issue.
The nickname issue has supporters on both sides. Some support changes, while others support the status quo. Our recommendation to you in January was to focus on bringing our athletic boosters, supporters, and fans together. Your decision to make a change to the nicknames was one of the worst ways to bring our supporters together.
Our main priority is to support our alma mater, our athletic program, and our current athletes. We want to focus on fundraising and alumni support, however, our Board continues to struggle with understanding your priorities.
UH Athletics Program has gone through very difficult times and we are hoping that your leadership will begin the healing process and bring everyone back together. The University of Hawaii Athletics Program is so vital to the well being of our local community, and the nicknames of our teams are not mere names, but representations symbolizing the importance of our athletic programs.
We look forward to supporting you in the future, but cannot support your decision to cast aside decades of athletic history and the boosters who recall these fond times.

We are giving away an old-school T-shirt. (It’s new, but again, oddly wrinkled.)
If you wish to enter the drawing, please post: I want my UH football.
Avis will choose a winner.

Apologies for the different fonts.
Hey, this computer stuff is tricky.
I want my UH football.
If I win, I’ll donate it for auction at the next Pigskin Pigout.
The real blame goes back to lack of leadership in 1999/2000 that failed to do TWO THINGS:
-Tell June Jones “NO” with regards to the removal of “Rainbow” from the football program.
OR
-Work with Jones to unilaterally apply Warriors across the board and solidify this “modified/new” brand.
Hey top ten. Sweet. Good afternoon from Texas tsaikos. I want my UH football
I want my UH football
I want my UH Football! Top something.
I say make the change to Warriors. Works better for me.
I believe the REAL healing process / disconnect with the fans has very little to do with the nickname.
More focus on enhancing the customer experience at live games, ensuring coaches in all programs to “up” their programs in academics and athletics, and improved marketing will “heal” any issues fans have with UH athletics.
Gratz to DaMenehune!
Its already Warriors for good starting in the summer.
Ben Jay needs to STAND HIS GROUND! I believe he will!
1st World Problems.
Warriors, but only so I can make top ten.
Someone tell the Letterwinners Club that no one is stopping them from calling the teams whatever they want. They should hear some of the names I call them at times. 🙂
I want My UH football.
Good leaders aren’t neccesarily popular or well-liked people. Wishing Jay the best on this issue.
Too late already. I like em both but I think it’s time to move on. Warriors.
Our main priority is to support our alma mater, our athletic program, and our current athletes. We want to focus on fundraising and alumni support, however, our Board continues to struggle with understanding your priorities.
If you read this over and over again, well not really, just once carefully, its very contradictory when contested against simple logic.
Good morning all.
I want my UH football.
Ok, OK, I want my UH football.
The “logo” happens to be my absolute favorite – hands down!!!!!!!!!
Why am I not surprised by the Na Koa letter to Mr. Jay? While I believe it would be good for UH, its players, students, and fans that there be more consistency in use of “nick names” for the different sports program, what transpired is more of a “ram it down your throat” style?
It appears more appropriate and sounds better when you use Rainbow Wahine for all the female sports. For the Kane, now comes the difficult part as football using “Warriors” seem more appropriate with the “H” tapa logo. But, for baseball and basketball, I prefer Rainbow Warriors.
Let me support the players!
Good morning everyone!
I want my UH football.
Ooppppppsss, here I go again using another name instead of mine – at least it’s not Mrs A-House.
I want my UH football, chee.
I applaud Ben Jay’s decision and the speed in which he made the CORRECTION.
Jay said he loosely “polled” fans, employees, boosters, not officially, but got a feel for their opinions and it was a mixmash of all kinds of things. Jay was smart. He knew if he made an official inquiry to several groups the result would be equally as mixed and they would get no where and it would take a longer time to get to nowhere.
He put his foot down and took control.
Too many times in Hawaii, things and decisions are attempted and take forever and this is one case where a select group of people are used to that slow-paced process.
Not all decisions should be made so quickly but some issues that shouldn’t be issues linger in the processes in Hawaii and enough was enough.
If I was Jay, I would have done the same thing.
Sometimes a leader does need to seek efficiency!
Can’t please everyone all the time.
As my friend Abe was quoted, but I changed fool to please.
You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not please all of the people all of the time.
Stick to your guns Mr. Jay.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!!
I want my UH football.
Once more – Yell “GO WARRIORS” or yell “GO BOWS” or “GO WAHINE” but don’t just sit on your … (hands?).
A rose by any other name …
KEVIN:
Pomai can’t make the CC – will you be there?
i just need to know if I have to rename the blog.
I want my UH football.
also, just noticed I used Na Koa instead of Letter Winners Club – sorry – apologize.
Yet, this entity represents all of the former student athletes from UH.
Point to ponder: what do “former” student athletes believe they should receive from UH once their playing days are over? Ideas on how to make the program better and not just “we need $$$”. Wonder what other schools do in this area?
Is this an area that UHAD should consider and create a plan? It does provide “feed back” to what transpired while the student was at UH. Do we not look for “feed back” to determine the success of an idea or goal or objective and what area(s) to improve on?
On the next Leahey & Leahey: BJ Wie.
Tom,
Unfortunately not. Kind of running around today. Took today and tomorrow to get things ready for the weekend’s festivities.
I want my UH football!
I watched Leahey&Leahey last night and I’m wondering what is going in with Jim he looked terrible.
yea, tom mui you tell all those who attend games and sit like a lump and get irritated by those around who jump and yell and sulk when things go wrong.
perhaps we are still in the “generational” set where the Oriental reticence ways are still with many of us as we try to break the yoke that binds us to the old ways while we live with the “new” ways? perhaps the generation before us will be forever tied to their prior upbringing and their children will gradually release the old and accept the new?
be not mistaken that many of the “old ways” are invalid cause I hold many dear and true; not out of respect for my late parents or my grandparents, but to my own self.
Rainbows feel weak. Warriors feel strong with a fighting spirit. Let’s move on. It’s a done deal. I agree and support Ben Jay. It’s also fine to keep the Rainbow Wahine.
Agree with Kevin #4. Blame this all on June Jones and Hugh Yoshida and the rest of the people in power at the time in the UH AD. No one said a word when these changes came about. I also liked the Larry Price era Rainbow Warrior decal, but, it is what it is, as the saying goes. I like the “H” on the helmets and I think it’s one of the best looking helmet designs in the nation. Bring back the strictly green and white uniforms and no more black and silver. Dark green can look menacing, too.
I want my UH Football.
Thanks Avis and ST. Email sent.
ST, now why would you want to change the name of the Warrior Beat?
Is this not primarily for football altho some of us take it to the extremes.
Why is there a controversy regarding Warriors? Hawaii football has been the Warriors for ten, eleven years. The only men’s team where Rainbows seems appropriate is the baseball team. The name Rainbows is steeped in Hawaii baseball and I can see it would be difficult to accept a name other than Rainbows, a name that has been synonymous with Hawaii baseball. But that is a view other than the main reason for the change. BJ claims standardization is essential to branding. That is the basis for the change. So I guess its time to move on.
How will maintaining/reverting back to “Rainbows” go to help with repair and maintenance of the facilities, building new facilities, or funding a year-round training table?
I want my UH football

Time to move on already!!!

University of Hawaii hired Ben Jay as its AD to bring a business culture to Manoa. The program as it exists is a financial disaster. While we should always be thankful for the history and tradition of past athletes and teams, the program needs to move forward if it is to thrive. The use of a singular identity for all programs makes economical sense. “H” is our logo and “Warriors” is our name. Imua is our direction and success is our aim. I have not seen any other viable plan. Now let’s put butts in those seats.

Why did so many mainland announcers have problems and mispronounce the name Star Lotulelei? Same with Manti TE’AU. What’s so hard?

Winning!!!
Kevin:
Tuesday night we went to the Call The Coach Show with Bob Coolen at the Kani Ka Pila Grille at The Outrigger Reef Hotel. We got to meet Coach Bob Coolen who introduced us to his wife and son. It was a good show. One caller asked Bob what does he do in his free time.
You probably already know the answer. In his spare time he enjoys taking care of the field.
He says that he finds it relaxing. I did not know that he used to be a Lifeguard on the Mainland before coming to Hawaii and enjoys spending time at the Beach with his family.
He was also telling us that Kelly Majam is tied for 9th place in NCAA Women’s Softball History in Home Run’s. When you think about that, it really is incredible.
Good Luck to The Wahine Softball team on their last Homestand this weekend.
Welcome to the Tsaiko Ward.
Welcome to the Tsaiko Ward.
WARRIORS fo me, please.
I find it frustrating and embarassing-just makin ladat wit dat word; especially on national telecasts when sports casters can’t determine what UH’s nickname is.
I bet u, Al Michaels wud prefer, WARRIORS?
I want my UH football.
Nothing Majam, Iwata, and Parnaby does really surprises me anymore.
They’ve gone above and beyond what anyone expected and they started making noise three years ago.
Even what Kaia has done this year doesnt surprise me too much because she was always a legitimate starter at the D1 level. But like Coolen said, I was surprised at how much she would have to be used this year even though it was a no-brainer she would be our workhorse.
If one wants to compare the impact these three have had on their sport, I will say this is the most DOMINANT and impactful set of seniors for any sport at UH in the last decade.
There are a great group of kids coming into the program in the next two seasons but for those that didnt really follow or appreciate UH softball the last four years, those people MISSED out on greatness.
I want my UH football soooooooooo bad!
Another thing that most people do not realize is how tough these three ladies are and have been.
Majam BEAT cancer.
Iwata playing with a shoulder injury from last season, a torn labrum as reported publicly.
Parnaby has had her face broken twice. Orbital bone/cheek in fall 2009 and will play this weekend with NO mask with a broken nose.
These ladies do not make excuses and dont take days off.
I want my uH football!!!
Don’t matter what the nickname is just win games will solve problem.

Brynne Buchanan and Tara Anguiano round out the class with the kind of attitude and perserverence that many programs can benefit from.
The lack of playing time during their careers didnt stop them from being dedicated teammates and good students. They NEVER complained, they knew their role and with patience comes rewards. Both are tremendously RESPECTED amongst the team and when not all will play, as with any team sport, they are a good example of being great teammates with class. They never made excuses for why they didnt play earlier and this is sadly becoming a lost art in college sports.
As the article today notes, both Buchanan and Anguiano have great familes that have supported them from day one.
What has the members of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Letterwinners Club Board of Directors done for the UH Sports? Apparently nothing the athletic complex is still looking like the Shizzille hit the fan and still not sure if there is soap or toilet paper in the bathrooms. Maybe the University of Hawaii at Manoa Letterwinners Club Board of Directors should get off their HIGH and MIGHTY Thrones and help raise MORE $$$ for the athletic dept. and stop worrying about their Silly Logos and Nick Names. Ben’s priorities are to take UH to the next level. But it sounds like from this letter some people want to stay right where we are at.
GO BENJAY!!!! GO Warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO BOWS!!!
Why not go back to the “Fighting Deans”? It’s gender neutral. If Wake Forest can make a “deacon” look menacing, or Maryland can do the same to a turtle and Ohio State to a family of nuts, I’m sure we could “angry up” a Fighting Dean”….and while there are a number of teams nicknamed “Warriors”, I can’t think of any called the “Fighting Deans”.
That should make the old school guys happy, the new school guys happy (if we can properly “angry up that mascot), keep the gender thing out of the discussion, keep the “H” (incorporate it in the “angry fighting dean” look) and have a unique nick name.
Ridiculous? well it goes along with the keep the old, out with the old/in with the new arguments going on. Just a tongue in cheek addition to the discussion.
i want my football!
Dear Letterwinners Club Board of Directors,
Get over it!!!!
Go Warriors!! Go Rainbow Wahine!!

Hi Tsaikos
I want my UH football
Bring back the “Fighting Deans.” 🙂
Was wondering, why do the school songs for Wake Forrest and Kamehameha Schools have the same melody? Again, mean no disrespect to both institutions or to any graduates.

FYI No. 19/23 University of Hawai’i softball team (38-10, 15-3 Big West) host its final home series of the season against UC Santa Barbara (28-21, 9-9 BWC). Saturday will be “Senior Day” for five Rainbow Wahine—Tara Anguiano, Brynne Buchanan, Jessica Iwata, Kelly Majam and Kaia Parnaby. Saturday will also be “Power in Pink” day to recognize breast cancer awareness.
Old School Dave:
your #56 – it’s because they don’t give a “hoot” of how “other” names are pronounced – all they know is the “American way” and it starts from the top down and, it appears in their mind, that they will ALWAYS be correct!
ever hear how Honda is pronounced? how about Hyundai? or, Subaru? heck certain politicians and news media types still use Burma when the name of that nation was changed to Kampuchia over 2 decades ago.
This just out on the SA front page online:
Despite a plea from the University of Hawaii Letterwinners Club, athletic director Ben Jay said he doesn’t anticipate reversing his decision to change the school’s nicknames.
In February, Jay announced that the school would officially begin calling its men’s teams ‘Warriors” starting July 1, while all the women’s teams will remain the “Rainbow Wahine.”
Currently various men’s teams go by “Warriors,” “Rainbow Warriors,” and “Rainbows.” Jay said the change is for branding purposes and to avoid confusion.
The UH Letterwinners Club sent Jay a letter Wednesday, saying, “we request that you hold off changing the nicknames of the University of Hawaii athletic teams.”
Jay, who is on the mainland, said today he hasn’t had an opportunity to respond to the letter but, “I don’t foresee any change” in his previously announced plans.
He said the switch will take place July 1, as announced.
Meanwhile, another opponent of the name change, Stephen Chinen, has announced a “Rally 4 Rainbows” Friday at 5 p.m. at Bachman Hall.
“Warriors” is too generic. Hawaii is unique and the “Rainbow” moniker accurately describes our state’s melting pot of cultures. I say “Rainbow Warriors” for men sports and “Rainbow Wahine” for women’s.
A-House,
My view is not what former UH Athletes expect from UH but what each one of us can give back to the school that gave us an education and the opportunity to compete.
It is not always monetary donations (although in these challenging times that is a good option) but joining former and current student/athlete support groups, purchasing season tickets, and buying that fundraiser ticket. Even contributing to this blog as a support mechanism for UH Athletics is a plus.
Rainbows? Warriors? Rainbow Warriors?
Same school but the name has been shortened. Yes I wish it was still the same as in my playing days but change has come about and if the name change makes the program better off then I can still wish but the change has my support.
I was one of the signers to the above referenced letter. I found it somewhat disconcerting that the AD did not meet with the only organization on campus that represents all former athletes and is completely voluntary for membership.
Be that as it may, GO WARRIORS!
Kampuchia?
I want my football.
…and Burma Shave cream.
I want my uh football!!!!
:O go WARRIORS!!!!!!
Kelly Majam, Kaia Parnaby, and Jessica Iwata, are players that only come around in a lifetime. They are not only outstanding players, but also outstanding students and individuals, also. Someday, hopefully soon, they will be honored as members of the Circle of Honor.

Will our Fearless Leader be at the CC today?
ST, the SA was on track to renaming the blog after a mutated avian species until you took it back.
Other schools are finding ways to raise funds to build new athletic facilities in order to be competitive Here at UH we put our energies and fight over the names of our teams.
http://www.utahstateaggies.com/strengthandconditioningcenter.html
Mr. A-house – Burma = Myanmar, not Kampuchia.
Hmmm… hungry for some Myanmar/Burmese food.
i wonder how many people will be at the rally tomorrow.
Would Ben Jay dream of renaming the Buckeyes (his alma mater and former employer) ito “rebrand” them and freshen up their image? Of course not. The football team has been the “Warriors” for 10 years because the character-challenged June Jones changed the name to rebrand himself as a great coach so he go on to better things after he took the UH football team to the Sugar Bowl. Has June renamed the SMU team? They wouldn’t stand for it.
Time for tradition to count: UH had always been the Rainbows and calling the teams the “Rainbow Warriors” is a good compromise (like on the old T-shirt that’s being given away). And, as was pointed out, why should the Rainbows baseball team (which has a better record and bigger fan base than UH football) have to change its name?
top 100
or….#100 is good too!
Hi Don:
Long time no hear!
I hear from or see Murray Cassidy from time to time at games through x-mas card.
Yes, I definitely agree that there are multiple ways for many if not all to make a contribution be it in support of UH athletics or non-profit organizations.
For “lower campus”, support can come in $$ or labor/materiel or exchange of product(s0 for free advertising, etc. Guess for lower campus, the $$$ is the best way today; yet, “sprucing up” can be done in so many ways to make the “quarry” very nice. Back in 1948, my uncle lived above the quarry near left field of Murakami Stadium. I used to cross the street and watch them break rocks to feed the “belt” leading to the crushing machine.
not at all realizing that years later, I would be in the “quarry” for tennis, learning how to golf, dancing – yep, ballroom style as part of PE class – it was either swimming or going to the quarry.
I recall my freshman year, we had to report to Coach Sakamoto at the swimming pool to see if we had to learn how to swim or move to the quarry. He say, —— jump in and swim, so I do and kept swimming until he yells ‘get out of my pool and go down stairs”.
What kind of letter is this? Some support , yet others want status quo. No sense in talking to these guys they can’t even make up their mind within their own membership.

jm2375 and old school dave:
eye new it was one of them – mind keeps getting fuzzier and fuzzier – damn, maybe eye am doomed to be like my late Mom
regarding the nickname……What would be the way to resolve the issue once and for all?
A vote of some kind?
A new AD that ramrods it thru without even discussing it with the Letterwinner organization? , “My way or the Highway?”
if people are tied to tradition, shouldn’t we just go back to the gold helmets and be called the Fighting Deans?
nICE,… i LIKE fighting Deans!
Loas = Kampuchia
maybe the “nerves or fibers” are connecting again?
most colleges in changing their name usually have the students vote on it. this was done by one person, is that the democratic way. the nickname of a school does not only affect atheletes and the atheletic programs, it is the nickname of the who was or is involved on the school, even alumni, etc. why not put it to a vote, it is only fair.
perhaps the contents of the Letter Winners Club is not as important as the commitment by Jay to discuss with them, as he promised, before making the change – would it have made a difference? maybe or maybe not!
whom do we really support? the school? the student/athlete? the school’s nickname?
but, it’s important that those in positions of authority keep their promises unlike the military or politics wherein the “boss” can make any changes he/she wants without keeping his/her word – however, if you want the respect of your superiors, peers, or subordinates, integrity is very important.

Hey couple of bloggers jumped on that old “Fightin Deans” nick name. Now let’s angry ’em up and scare the cr_p out of whoever comes our way. Gold helmets? Okay, so be it, no moa gold in Hawaii..how about “Olivine” (sp?) youk now the color of stuff the newcomers to the islands found on Mt. Leahi and thought was diamonds?
Now we represent!

After reading the letter, made me wonder who is on the Board and who are the Director’s? I googled and now I know. I feel the names should be posted but didn’t want to do so without ST’s approval. I’ll check back later.

the one thing no one is mentioning: The “H” logo is f’n awesome! it’s not just a “nice” logo or a “good” logo – it’s one of the best in the country. for that reason alone, I prefer “Warriors” or any solution that will allow us to keep using that logo.
I want my UH football.
Who cares if Ben Jay changes the name. We only care about wins right? If the teams win everybody is happy, if the teams lose everybody will blame the name change. Some people act like it’s the end of the world. Jesus Christ just let it go already…………

WARRIORS it is! Move on Letterwhiners. UH needs a new direction and Ben Jay is the man!
this name stuff reminds me of that old Busch Natural light commercial with Raymond J. Johnson Jr, you can call me Ray you can call me Jay you can call me Ray J just don’t call me Johnson.
132. RB:
I am so with you on this. Move on already.
Warriors sounds better than “rainbows” to me and is way more marketable.
Good thing for leadership. Just like JJ when he more or less unilaterally
changed the FB team to Warriors – that is leadership. Not every little thing
can be a group decision or unequivocal. As the alumni/boosters point out there are supporter of both sides – that’s when you need deciders, leaders to drag the rest forward into the future. Its no big deal to me just think its better.

UH athletic director rejects plea to change his mind on team names
By Ferd Lewis

The UH Letterwinners Club Board of Directors have been off of the throne for a while.
We have purchased tables at multiple fundraisers, hosted receptions for former athletes and guests prior to reunion matches, provided graduation stoles for scholar athletes to wear during the ceremony, purchased day planners for all UH scholar/athletesw, and set up pre-graduation receptions for scholar athletes & families.
Lest I forget, $50,000 was donated from the UH Letterwinners Club for the remodel of the Nagatani Academic Center.
Confused
As in any group there was board consensus reached in having the letter written but not all board members were/are drawing a line in the sand over the name change
What is at the end of the Rainbow?
I want my UH football.
I agree with #123 RB. The main thing is if the team wins. I don’t know why everyone is calling it a name change, he technically didnt change the name of the University, he just unified all the nicknames of the teams for the university to be the same. Regardless of which nickname was chosen, I respect what Ben Jay did. He made a decision on something that has been an issue for quite some time and is sticking to it. Obviously he can’t please everyone. Had he chosen Rainbow Warriors, you’d have a different group of fans making complaints. As fans we should be concentrating more of our efforts on supporting our teams rather than bickering about which nickname we like the best. In the end, it’s just a nickname.
I think it’s hilarious people think it should be left up to the voters. We did the same thing for rail and look how that turned out. Even after the election, the debate still continues.
The Willamette Valley was in its full Spring Glory today on our trip to the coast with my #2. Just beautiful.
Tomorrow, Spring Chinook (King) Salmon fishing with the old college buddies. Haven’t seen one of them for 33 years. Gotta Hanapa’a………got lomi(hehe).
…………….oh, and I want my UH football!!!
I think Ben Jay has already indicated his priorities. He made the decision to brand the team as Warriors; done. Now he moves on to higher priorities facilities and fundraising.
Does anyone remember if Iowa Hawkeye fans went crazy about changing the emblem and team colors when Hayden Fry went from SMU to Iowa. He changed the colors to the black and gold of the Steelers because he thought the colors were more intimidating.
The funny thing is even though UH will be known as WARRIORS they still will be called RAINBOW WARRIORS on ESPN, Sportscenter, opposing teams commentators, and some media outlets. LOL it always happens.
I thought Kampuchea was tied to Cambodia and not Laos. You lost in Asia A-House?

I WANT MY RAINBOWS too!
ST thank you for posting this letter. There is a large supportive group of fans out there that was not being heard.

I truly do agree with each of the ideas you may have made available to this post. They are very begging all of which will surely get the job done. Nevertheless, the actual blogposts are incredibly quick for freshies. May you want expand these folks a little from when? We appreciate you the posting.
Did anyone look up the amount of sales done with UH merchandise since the changing of the logo. Not only in dollar volumn but also the amount of items sold. Items sold will be a better indicator. I’ve personally seen more people on the streets today wearing merchandise with the H logo than merchandise with the rainbow on it back when that was the nickname. However there are more people living on Oahu than 20 to 40 years ago.
100 years from now 99% of us will not be living on this planet. Which nickname will do more for the merchandising sales and tradition? One thing is for sure a winning tradition in all sports will help the sales and if that name whatever it is from today will be a tradition of itself. Is Warriors or Rainbows the best alternative? Is there another nickname to consider that we may all be overlooking?

I want my UH football.
And I want my daddy’s records.
#9 You’re wrong. I am a Rainbow Baseball fan first and foremost. The name has everything to do with my resentment and anger toward Ben Jay. Our baseball program already has all the things you’ve listed: customer experience at live games, coaches upping their programs in academics and athletics, and improved marketing. Ben Jay took away our identity. We were never Warriors. Maybe you’re referring to the football program which already carries the Warrior name?
#24 A speedy correction is your opinion. In my opinion it was a speedy DECISION, speedy and incorrect.
To completely sever the Rainbow name is a slap in the face to those of us who cherish the name for all it represents. Tell me this, how would changing all the names to Warriors increase attendance, donations, and fund more facility upgrades? How would changing the name to Warriors vice Rainbow Warriors do this?
Oh, and by the way, I could be wrong, but in the Ch2 interview that Sam Spangler conducted with Coach Trap @ the Les the day the decision was made, I heard Coach say ‘Rainbows’ or ‘Warriors’. Did BJ not present the ‘Rainbow Warrior’ option to those he polled? Because that option would be the compromise to bring the UH family together.
Will AKA change their name? Effective July 1, the Rainbow Warrior ceases to exist in UH Athletics.
And lastly, for all those who say ‘get over it, it’s only a name’, you’d be reacting the same way we Rainbow backers are if BJ had gone with Rainbow Warriors. If it’s only a name, why not compromise? Because you know deep down it’s more than a name. For us it’s tradition and history, for you it’s not being associated with being gay.

I want my UH football.
Back in ’68 when I was a freshman the teams were called the Rainbows. Larry Price added Warrior to the nickname. Never really liked the name Rainbow Warriors, liked plain Rainbows much better.
The Warriors vs Rainbow{s}{Warriors} debate had been going on for over a decade. Ben Jay took a stance, which in his mind would end this debate. Each name has it’s passionate supporters but in my opionion these passionateones are in the minority.
It is my belief the majority of Fans have a preference for one name or the other but will take a sideline seat rather than get directly involved in the debate. Most seem to realize that “officially” the Men’s teams are the Warriors. It still won’t stop me or the others from referiring to the teams as we want to.
“here we go Rainbows, here we go….”
It was the WARRIORS that went 12-1 in 2007.
As i recall June Jones changed the name because he felt Warriors were a better representation of the uni and Hawaii in general. He also stated that Warriors would sound better when Hawaii would be mentioned as a top 20 team in the polls. We were there a few times I look forward to being there again. GO GREEN, GO WARRIORS.
while UH partisans argue over a nickname, the SEC goes about getting TV revenues for EACH school estimated to be about $34 million annually.

Ben Jay said that names will be the official team names but fans may call the teams anything they want to, i.e. ‘Bows, Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors, or Warriors. Food for thought: to be consistent why not “Rainbow Wahine” and “Rainbow Kane”? Anyways, just thinking. Go Warriors! Go Rainbow Wahine!
okay. i can relate to that t-shirt logo.
I want my UH football.
I want my UH football.
For branding purposes, he had to stick with one or the other. I’ve been around for both nicknames and personally like Hawaii Warriors over Rainbows or Rainbow Warriors.
If hard core Rainbow fans want to cheer on the Bows at games, go right ahead. No one is stopping you.
Don Weir (We-Ah):
So why doesn’t the Board disclose in the letter what they want the nickname to be. The letter does not tell anyone (Ben Jay included) what the board wants. Don’t think the man has time to sit in on a meeting and wait for you guys to come up with a suggestion or a choice. Make it clear. Tell him what you want and then ask for the meeting, otherwise you just wasted paper and a stamp.
Women should just be “Rainbows”.
Warriors and the H was a marketing strategy. a VERY GOOD Marketing strategy, btw… because UH had a new logo to sell. (mahalo, JJ)
Keeping an (now) old name without a new marketing strategy and campaign to go with it feels like an empty, uninspired bureaucratic move that will not win hearts, minds and $$$ for the Athletic Dept.
i can understand the sentiment being displayed by the alumni lettermen/women, afterall, that was what they were called back then. that is what they are proud of.
but, the times they are a changing.
moving forward, when apparel and paraphenalia sales are as big, if not bigger, than gate revenue, the re-branding to warriors and wahine is a good move from a marketing/retail perspective.
the alumni will always refer to the good old days when warriors were rainbows and the rainbow wahine were rainbow women. that is their legacy and no one is taking it away from them.
afterall what’s in a name? it is the character beneath the jersey that most exemplifies and embodies the individuals who make up the teams for our university of hawaii. which to me is more important in the end.
…nuff said
I like Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors and Warriors. I was at UH from 1967 to 1971. But I applaud Ben Jay for making the decision. There is too much decision by committee, task forces, voting by stakeholders, consideration of what the unions will think, etc., so nothing ever gets accomplished in the long run.
There will ALWAYS be naysayers on everything now and in the future. We need leaders not timid committee men. Go for it Ben! Do what you think is right. The program has been stagnant for too long. We need leadership and strong decision making.

Change is always painful. Next step get over it! Hawaii Warriors across the board is simple to remember.

#175…Agreed al…On the marketing side as well, we could always have throwback jerseys and other paraphernalia that would sell like crazy….just like the last two T-shirts ST had as prizes.

let’s just go back to the FIGHTING DEANS already!! We could hire VILI dress him up like Dean Martin and let him run around the stadium!!!
Lest we forget about leaving it in the hands of the student body, didn’t a NorCal institution change their nickname to: Banana Slugs or something like that?
Leave it alone, we’ll all get up tomorrow and cheer the team on: if confused just say, “Go Team, Go” and leave it nameless, leaving the name part to the writers, merchants and whoever.
I bet the next big debate in this “dead time period” will be the uniform colors. Next?!?

#159 ‘Anuenue is a natural part of Hawaii and I love that it has been used to represent Hawaii sports. It is a symbol of unity and a kind of unbroken strength in diversity that will last long after war is relegated to myth.’
Which is why the so called rebranding should be Rainbow Warriors.
all of my tori richards, kahala, tommy bahama aloha shirts all sport the embroidered warriors “H” logo. very expesive stuff, but that is my way of supporting UH athletics, which is actually priceless in the bigger picture. you better believe i wear them with pride!
Al,
Been down in Baja fishing for a while.
Missed out on the CC’s and many of the Spring games.
I’ll get in touch.
The names may change but the game is the same.
Hey, UH Letter Winners Club, SHUT UP already and stop the baby-like whining, it’s annoying, it really is.
Thing is, after the 1999 UH football season under head coach June Jones, the record turnaround season, and prior to the 2000 season when the name change was made, nobody heard from your whining butts.
Since 2000, and under two different Athletic Director (Frazier and Donovan), there were years of opportunity to fight the fight. However, silence, out of sight out of mind.
Now, out of nowhere, like 6th grade girls who had their “Hello Kitty” purse taken away, you all have tears running down your faces.
Stop, it’s time to retain what little dignity you as a group have left.
I want my UH football
Let’s move on, my memories of Rainbows were from the 70’s and 80’s and most recently Von Appen era which left a bad taste in my mouth for the nickname. Warriors are more appropriate.

Ben Jay….no listen to the fans stuck in a time warp.
Hey, I liked my childhood but I can’t get that back.
it is such a simple thing to comprehend…..nostalgia equals the past. Change equals the future.
lettermen’s club, any club, any fan….they will support the WARRIORS, so don’t worry about them because a true fan will support a team not a name. They can’t seem to understand that Warriors is a name that both fits Hawaii, and fits in marketing to a broader base nationally and internationally.
Rainbows fade away, warriors fight forever.
so people saw a rainbow and wanted to name the teams rainbows…people are we that looney? There was also a sun, why not call us suns? There was also mountains, why not call us mountains. There were birds, trees, wind, air, clouds, rain…i mean all of these things and we fall for a “story” and take on the name rainbows. we let a few people from decades ago call us rainbows….so why not let people from a decade ago call us warriors?
rainbows in the age of college football today–really? Get with the times oldies. nostalgia is the past, change is the future. today, it’s about business and warriors is a better business fit on a broader scope then rainbows or rainbow warriors.
I am glad Ben Jay saw this right away and stamped his ideals on it.
Seriously to sum it up compare these two phrases…
Rainbow Nation
Warrior Nation
do we really need to say more or see more then this?
Yes sell t-shirts that say rainbow nation and see who your market will be…a very small and niche’ market it will be. Sell t-shirts that say warrior nation and your chances to sell those shirts will be far far greater indeed.

Good evening!

Lets go Warriors! Pound USC!! I want my UH Football!!
Nothing wrong with Rainbow Warriors. Everyone has stated the rationale for this name – the traditions, legacy, Hawaii, legend, and uniqueness. Fear that this Rainbow is tied to gays is a mainland concept but in a broader sense, it represents the spectrum and this is what Hawaii is.
I think the main reason why there is dissension is not so much the name change but the lack of involvment from those that feel affected by that change. If you involve them in the decision-making process, they might become intellectually and emotionally vested and be more open to the idea and less resistant. Change rarely comes without obstacles, but there are ways to facilitate change and minimize the negative impact.
Anyway, whether its Rainbow Warriors, Warriors or whatever, just win and I’m happy.
In sports related news…
“The NCAA Division I Board of Directors has suspended rule changes passed in January that would have allowed unlimited electronic communication — including text messaging — from college coaches to football recruits.”
“Also, Thursday, the board indefinitely suspended plans to raise academic requirements in 2016 for initial eligibility at the Division I level. If enacted, the changes would have forced many first-year student-athletes to sit out of competition as “academic redshirts.””

pomai…think, “koa anuenue” = rainbow warriors
IMO there has already been too much energy expended on this, 13 years too late.
Some things that I have asked that no one has ever been willing to answer.
1. Why did you wait so long? The die was cast 13 years ago and you wait till now?
2. You want surveys and public meetings? Who pays for the printing, postage, tabulating votes, meeting room rentals and other misc costs?
3. Regardless of how this whole thing turns out. I hope everyone who has proclaimed themselves as “passionate” fans, turns out IN PERSON to support the student-athletes who play for our state university regardless of what nickname is used.
Rainbows, Rainbow warriors, warriors….. it doesn’t matter to me too.
what does matter to me is the difference in which is more marketable and can bring in more money, a broader fan base, etc.
this why you often hear….”this is business, its not personal”. but we are taking this way to personal. all you have to do is ask yourself since rainbows, rainbow warriors, warriors all fit hawaii, which of these will then fit the national and international landscape to be the best fit in marketing and growing the name of UH sports.
Many things are unique to hawaii….and we tend to be defensive and protective about things-especially change. but in a fast changing environment as college football the fact is you have to be marketable.
win yes, but if we talk nostalgia, a big part of nostalgia is the JJ era warriors. we have nostalgia and success with both names so i for one cannot buy into the nostalgia song and dance. and for people who insist on changing the name please offer other reasons then nostalgia, please offer other reasons then that’s who we are because you don’t speak for everyone. please tell us how by putting in the word rainbows we become more marketable.
As jim leahey wold say…hawaii is polynesia’s team. i for one think if all polynesia had a say….warriors over rainbows in a rout.
al if I am not mistaken that phase is a modern phase. I guess I should have clarified that I was talking about pre 1900.

I want my UH football.
I want my UH football!
I want my UH football!!
It’s none of my business, so I’ll leave the settlement for those who may know what’s best for the program otherwise. I do have a question though. If we have had minor issues that have surfaced recently and in the past on ware an tear to our facilities (Soap dispenser/Light bulbs/ locker rooms/ect.) why are we as supporters, (clubs, organizations, ect.) doing anything about it to fix it? It maybe be a complicated process and probably there are steps to be taken. I think it would be better to subcontract a crew to work the facility, then to just donate money to the program that would probably end up else where. The T.C. Ching ohana has done just that. Far more things right now to worry about than the the nicknames. It’s the players, coaches and loyal supporters that make the team what it is. Not the names on there backs, the number, or the teams nickname. Continue to support, regardless.
So can I get my UH football back now?

AL: Your offer to donate three cans for one pound of peaberry still on the boards – even if the peaberry is not from Hawaii Island?
Stand your ground, Ben Jay. Mark Takai and the other Letterman had some 13 years to “do something” about the Warriors replacing Rainbows in 2000. I suspect, that everyone was afraid to say anything or go against the brainchild of June Jones and his buddy Leigh Steinberg.
I want my UH football… All da way from Las Vegas!
Let’s see, what was our Warrior record last year? 3 and 9 you say. And who did we beat to get there? Stop using a single season’s record as an arguent for naming our program. The 92 teams Lettermen might argue the name change differently. The 11-2 record that ended in a win speaks for itself.
………I want my UH Football.
Fellow Hawaii Fans. Please show some class as we debate this issue. Thanks.
And for a change of pace. Seth Curry is a Baller!
I didn’t like the change when it was first made, but I’ve gotten used to it over the years. Warriors and Na Wahine it is. Next!
(Even though I hate to admit it, my favorite NBA team changed cities and nicknames over the years – Baltimore Bullets/Washington Bullets/Washington Wizards)
On a side note, how many teams now wear black unis, even though black is not one of the school colors?
Re-branding went from an important $211K/year job supporting the Chancellor’s vision to perhaps an afternoon of contemplation for the AD.
http://www.hawaii.edu/news/article.php?aId=5233
The fact that the decision was made without consulting many key UH booster organizations seems clear now. Despite the complaints and requests for dialogue, the AD hasn’t felt compelled to explain either the need for urgency, or been able to describe the payoff in anything but the most superficial of terms.
“The words – warriors, wahine, and rainbow – represent who we are as a university and athletics department,” Athletics Director Ben Jay said. “By utilizing these two nicknames, we keep with our tradition and are able to have a consistent branding and marketing message.”

分析的很透彻,很欣赏你的看法,学习了。
UH athletic director Ben Jay sent this email to Rally4Rainbows organizer Stephen Chinen.
Mr. Chinen,
Mahalo for your e-mail.
As my assistant Jeannie Lee previously informed you, I am currently attending meetings on the mainland and will not be available for the rally. However, I’m glad we were able to meet in order to share views and opinions.
When the decision was made in 2000 to change the nickname of the football, men’s volleyball, golf, and tennis teams to Warriors, I’m sure there were individuals that were against the decision because of their strong affinity for Rainbows.
Now, 13 years later, the Warrior nickname has been embraced by many and I am not aware of any past organized campaigns to change the nicknames of these four men’s teams back to either Rainbow Warriors or Rainbows.
After arriving at UH, it soon became clear that a decision had to be made to unite the remaining three men’s teams (men’s basketball, baseball, and swimming & diving) with the other four under a common nickname in order to end a branding situation that has caused confusion both locally and nationally and hampered marketing, licensing, and merchandising initiatives.
Based on numerous conversations with UH fans, I did not hear a consensus on what the men’s nickname should be but individuals were clearly in agreement that a decision had to be made and was long overdue. One of the key factors in the decision was that Warriors is the nickname of the majority of our men’s teams, including the one with the largest fan following (football).
We are changing the nickname of three of our seven men’s programs and not “all” of them. As I mentioned, four have been Warriors since 2000. In essence, we are not “making” a decision to adopt the Warrior nickname for our men’s sports, we are basically “finishing” the decision made 13 years ago, so that our brand identity is clear and unified.
Your efforts have not gone unnoticed and we appreciate the feedback and passion that has been expressed. We’ve also received feedback from many who are in support of the Warriors and Rainbow Wahine nicknames. We know we will not be able to please everyone but we are moving forward.
Please understand that we are not removing Rainbow entirely, since our women’s team’s will remain Rainbow Wahine and the “Let’s Go Bows” cheer will always be a part of the cheerleaders and fans’ repertoire. Also, there are plans to continue to honor the Rainbow tradition, including a “Retro Night” during the upcoming football season and a line of retro merchandise that is currently being sold. Other initiatives will also be planned.
Mahalo for your support of our men’s and women’s student-athletes and I hope to see you at many UH sporting events.
Aloha,
Ben
You know someone has to make the hard decision and not be wishy washy so I give credit to Ben Jay. Now for individuals to express their displeasure and resentfulness towards Mr. Jay is awfully narrow in that point of view. You should not make it so personal because none of the history is being ignored or callously looked down on. I have great memories of those times but change happens. I have great memories of the old Termite Palace but change happens. We have been mired in too many indecisions and it has cost the program dearly. The old internal system in the athletic department will need to be over hauled and changes will happen too. We have to give Ben Jay the chance to make these changes so that our program can move forward and not be stuck with all this negative syndrome. Which reminds me of the analogy of the a’ama crabs in the bucket.
#191, #230. Talk about disrespecting your school, as I assume UH is “your” school.
I read nothing in their letter to BJ that could remotely be labeled as whining or crying like 6th grade girls. There was a big ruckus when JJ changed the name of the football team and it’s been simmering ever since.
I applaud BJ for taking a stand and choosing one official nick name. He’s said many times he’s not trying to erase Rainbows from men’s athletics but was trying to unite all the men’s sports under one banner – Warriors, to maximize the brand.
Getting back to your comments. The people you are mocking are all former UH athletes. I suspect many were proud to be called a Rainbow or Rainbow Warrior. They’re the ones that walked the talk in their day. It is well within their rights to express their views without being ridicued by ones that only talk the talk.
I want my UH football.
265 – cocobean – Couldn’t agree more!!!
Guys and Gals . . . NO WORRY!!!! Soon enough, the fans that want the nickname to remain “Rainbows” won’t even be able to remember their own names. Once that happens, the argument will fade.

Al wants Peabody coffee from hightide, so offers to donate 3 cans of coffee to the UH coaches if hightide gives him some. That’s a private deal. But Al asks for more contributions of regular coffee to give the coaches…???
Is this the real Al or a phony trying to create a Quiote windmill cause?
I must be really cheap. I do not feel compelled to donate coffee grounds to coaches who have 6-figure $alaries. Not that I don’t like them, but they should be able to afford $6/week for their own coffee– or is it in their contract that coffee must be provided to them free?
Now, if the coffee was to help student athletes or their training table or a booster club to provide coffee for the team and supporters after a night game, maybe I would relent.
Of course, if Al was volunteering to run the coffee mess for the coaches every morning, that would be acceptable.

Is Stephen Chinen campaigning for this issue on our dime (state tax dollars)? I sure hope not. I am a proud and loyal UH alum myself. I was there to witness the marshmallow man. And the first version of “the warrior” that looked like his cousin. The male cheerleader who wore that costume was from Arkansas. He called his dad “Poppy”. Nice guy. In a horrendous outfit that was insulting to native Hawaiians. Not his idea and not his fault. Times change. Ben Jay is a smart guy. He knows what he’s doing. Too many things in Hawaii never improve because of the a’ama crab syndrome. Stephen Chinen seems to be that a’ama crab that keeps pulling the other crabs down just when they got a hold of the rim of that 5-gallon bucket. I haven’t met Ben Jay but he has certainly gained my attention and admiration in the short time that he’s been here. He’s a doer. As Haleakala mentioned, too many things in this state are attempted to be done via committee. Or task force. Or consensus. Or highly paid consultants or attorneys. And things take forever or never get done at all. Ben is a man of action. And a man who obviously sees the big picture. He’s got my vote to be the next UH President.

In a post above, it was quoted that Mr. Jay said fans still could use the “Let’s Go Bows” cheer. That is obviously true. Fans can chant anything they want or use the tommahawk chop, etc. But it is the meaning of the whole thing. Should the cheerleaders lead in “Rain” “Bow” cheer for the whole stadium like they used to do? There was a lot of pride and connection by those who attended games. And the players who played as Rainbows weren’t high draft picks but played hard and exciting and fans loved it. Even when JJ changed the name, there was controversy (remember Joe Moore?). Mr. Jay should have, and still could, make a great decision by officially adopting the name Rainbow Warriors for the reasons so well stated by other bloggers.
Good? Bad? Sometimes compromise stands in the the way of change. Only time will tell if “the road not taken” was the right choice.
I do not believe that Mr. Jay can, at this point, change his call. He will just have to live with the consequences of that decision. Leaders, accept the responsibility of decisions made. Good leaders will freely admit to owning bad decisions made. Great leaders learn from bad decisions made by owning and addressing them and not placing blame elsewhere.
We’ll see where the new AD will fall as time goes on. We’ve seen how the top at UH has lead when a bad decision was recently made.
UH Alum- That is the point I keep trying to make.
I think Chinen is expecting US to pay for all the surveys, encounter groups, meetings etc. It would add up to multiple tens to hundreds of thousands. No one has ever said “I will pay for it” just the typical “they should” “he should” “someone ought to…” that people in hawaii give.
I wish there was a “Like” button here.
UH Alum:
May 3rd, 2013 at 1:19 am
GO WARRIORS!!!
I WANT MY UH FOOTBALL

I want to apologize to Kevin. You were right all along re the name change. Ben Jay’s response to Chinen’s email confirms this.
I would like to know why BJ didn’t release this statement to the press back in February when he made the name change. It’s obvious his decision was made before he got on board, the public deserved to know the reasoning behind it. BJ needs to learn how to interact with the local community.
To Stephen Chinen, much mahalo. Although the rally is a moot point now, your intentions are heartfelt. It was because of your persistence that much was revealed. You are a good man.
For me it’s a sad day in UH Athletics because the Rainbow has truly faded. Not to discount Na Wahine but for me, Rainbows will always be my beloved baseball.
Having said that, the Basebows & Softbows have games today.
Go ‘Bows!
