It’s a wrap
The offseason conditioning program concludes today with the final round of testing in strength and speed drills. It also is the last chance for a player to best Saui Matagiese for the largest biceps. He’s unofficially at 53 centimeters.
Testing was spaced this week because of the gap between the end of the first summer-school session and the start of next week’s training camp. Per NCAA rule, scholarship checks are not distributed when a player is not enrolled in classes, forcing several mainland players to head home for three weeks.
* * * * * *
One hundred of the 104 roster spots for training camp have been reserved. There is some flexibility while medical statuses are confirmed. Players who are physically unable to participate in training camp might be brought in Aug. 26, the first day roster limits are lifted.

First!
Congratulations Grandpa and Grandma!
Mr. A-House:
Alas, I was not watching television. I was transcribing interviews from the MWC media preview.
It was fascinating that a Colorado reporter asked 15 questions in a row. He wouldn’t really wait for the coach to finish before firing off another question. You can hear the Idaho reporters grumbling in the background.
Mr. Colorado started off every question with: “Tell me about … “
The slow, grinding inexorable journey to August 29th continues…
Another signpost passing and the light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view.
…and I am not sure that I should finish this last cup o’ joe!
Good Morning Gang. Happy Aloha Friday!
top 10 =)
7 come 11
bat
Now that that is over with. Goodmornin’ Tsaiko Country :).
Good Morning Folks!
Best wishes to the Chow Ohana on the new grandbaby!
Good Morning. Happy Furlough Friday. Not sure if this was posted. From Na Koa for those that secured parking @ Aiea Elementary:
In response to your question posted on our website, the Aiea parking lot generally opens 3 hrs before kickoff. The school will be releasing the students at 12:30pm that day to accommodate our parking schedule and avoid any traffic problems and safety issues. Aiea parking gates will, therefore, open as scheduled at 2:00pm for the 5:00pm season opener kick off against USC.
Do they still have furloughs?
Let’s get it on!!! Football time
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Football is in the air! (What’s the latest on the long snapper?)
Aloha Kakou! As they would say in NYC, Mazal Tov to all the Chows!
Naim visiting this weekend?
State employee furloughs are done, but Federal Govt. employees have started their round of furlough fridays.
It’s the cirrrrrrrrcle of life!
I love how the feds create two classifications of employees of “essential employees” and “non-essential”, as to who will be furloughed. Nothing like creating a subordinate hierarchy to increase staff morale; “bully, you not essential and you not getting paid…..”
Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy Aloha (Furlough) Friday!
Congrats to Grandpa and Grandma Chow!
Training camp starts next week? Football is in the air!
Boolakanaka, thanks for yesterdays post regarding the Redskins. I did talk to my sis-in-law last night and she doesn’t feel threatened, offended, harmed, or insulted by that term. Be that as it may, there are differing values and points of views in our world today. The main thing is we can all get along without getting all huhu and act all lepo.
My wife works for DOE (12 mo employee)and they still have furlough days although they were told by governor to not call it that. Instead it’s referred to as Directive Leave With Out Pay or DLWOP. Same smell!!!
Jimmy it’s all about having a robust, but respectful debate. At the end of the day, it is certainly not about convincing the other side, rather it’s the recognition that we probably have more areas of commonality than not.
Gratz to the new Grandparents.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, how/why did Naim approach UH?
What, we don’t have enough local spam so now we have to start importing it? -_- SMH
Very well said, Mr. New Favorite nic, aka Boolaknaka. We do have more in common than not, and respectful debate is key.
What’s important here is not to say anything you wouldn’t repeat in public.
We are familiar with a lot of the same people, you and I.
Boolakanaka that should read… lol, sorry! Cold meds.
The reason I ask about the DE Naim is that it doesn’t just rain random crazy luck from the heavens.
Live Aloha and GO HAWAII!!!
BEAT USC!!
Is warriors FB locker room renovation completed?
28,
That’s what I’d like to know. Out of all the possible schools out there, this highly recruited DE chose to contact UH… Which isn’t even a bottom level BCS school, yet neither even a top tier mid-major conference. But still yet he chose to contact Hawaii? Hmmmmm… Something doesn’t make sense here.
Nice anniversary write up on the blog the other day Mr. Tsai. I remember when this first started. I wrote Stephen an email, saying he shouldn’t let folks post more than once on any given day. With keen foresight, he ignored me and the blog has been a huge success ever since.
I read this thing pretty much everyday now. Thanks for doing this for us Mr. Tsai.
I wish I could say that I have sage wisdom and that my parents and relatives taught me well ( they did to a certain extent), but much of that is just being brought up in Hawai’i, and well the wifey….and to put up with my ridiculous antics for 20+ years, well she knows a thing or two about getting along and developing consensus. Plus, when you grew up in Hawai’i you know the fine line between saying a smart crack and getting a false crack…..that is to say, you betta respect da bruddha next to you.
Top tier mid major football school… Not conference
Morning ev1,
Dad works for the federal. They have furlough Fridays but work on Saturdays and he works overtime. So really no more furlough.
I can smell the pigskin in the air! !!!!!
Sometimes no need figgah out the what, why, how, and where, and just accept the guy is considering being a Warrior. Hakuna matata.
It appears when Chow said our program will be a fierce recruiter, he meant it.
The type of assistants/position coaches we have on staff must also be playing a huge role in this. Kids are confident in what they see in UH’s staff.
Testing is great, but you can’t measure the heart of a Warrior!
Let’s Go Rainbow Warriors!
Puka da Trojans!
43,
Like ST said.. Hawaii didn’t contact him. HE contacted Hawaii. He’s the recruiter. Not Hawaii. But why contact Hawaii first? Out of all the other choices he has.
Boola, you’re a good man!
@45 Matty, While out paddling my 1-man canoe yesterday, and looking back at the island, I realized how spectacularly awesome it is to be living here in paradise. Maybe he (Naim) does too.
Congratulations to Saui Matagiese for the largest biceps.
But why is it measured in centimeters?
Ipu, 53 cm sounds larger than 20.87 in.
Spam, that reminds me, stupid joke Friday.
Mr. Chicken G advertises himself as the stud of all roosters so the local farmer buys him to take over stud duties from his aging reliable rooster.
Mr. Chicken G arrives at the farm and looks over at the hen house with eyes wide open. He stares down the aging reliable rooster. The aging reliable rooster don’t take sh*t and offers a challenge to Mr. Chicken G. “I challenge you to 5 laps around the hen house and the winner stays and the loser leaves. Mr. Chicken G being all proud of himself accepts the challenge and arrogantly tells aging reliable rooster he can have a head start.
The hens gather and peer out from their little windows of the hen house. The race starts and aging reliable chicken has a huge lead. The hens are clucking loudly and before you know it Mr. Chicken G is catching up. Aging reliable chicken is still leading after lap two but Mr. Chicken G is closing fast, the hens are in a frenzy!
This startles the farmer thinking a mongoose is trying to break into the hen house and he grabs his shotgun, runs out to the hen house and sees the 2 roosters running around.
Heading into the last lap aging reliable chicken is still leading but Mr. Chicken G is right up his ass.
Seeing this the farmer shoots Mr. Chicken G and says,
“Damn, this is the 4th gay rooster I bought this year, damn!’
On the DE’s interest…
UH no ka oi. If a precedent is being set in terms of UH football perception then I say “about time!”.
Sometimes the allure a program on the rise and a change of scenery are just what the soul has ordered. That, and maybe a little luck π
The only thing that matters is he WANTS to be a Warrior!
Hope he enjoys his visit and feels at home.
yea….what’s the inches??
As I understand it, DE’s arrival is pushed back to early next week.
If all goes right, according to people in the know, then it will be a one-way trip. They’re burning the canoes. He’ll stay for the duration. If things don’t work out, uh … I guess he can fly back. I mean, this is 2013.
i have furlough mondays till the end of the federal fiscal year.
mattyboy maybe the buggah stay interested in more than just the school…
In this case does size matter?
There actually is a little history between the DE and UH. One of the pitches UH uses is: “Be part of building the program.”
Well, the guy commits elsewhere, and that’s that. It was a prayer shot, anyway.
But then UH gets a call out of the blue. DE says he’s leaving his program after a semester and he wants to be part of “building a program.”
What do ya know? The guy listened.
If he were to have stayed, he’d probably be at least a couple of years away from getting on the field. He has skills, but they need refinement. If he comes here, well, the window is shortened considerably. No offense to anyone, of course …
Primo: 20.87 inches. You old-timers remember the wrestler Steve Strong? I think his biceps were advertised at 21 inches.
I think there are some guys at 24-Hour Fitness with 20-plus-inch biceps.
Bodybuilders can reach that.
But UH isn’t building bodybuilders. You need a little flexibility to play football, even at the three-technique.
The whole point of the contest was to break up the monotony of offseason training.
Which leads to another twist: One of the guys who probably could have been among the leaders had to limit his weight training for a week because he received a new tattoo on his biceps. Apparently there’s some rule about stretching new art; sort of like why you’re not to drive a new car over a certain speed for the first few weeks.
20.87 bigga dan my calf….sheesh!….
When people end a thought with “No offense to anyone…” π
What’s impressive about Saui is that he’s very athletic, probably because of his background in martial arts. I saw him do a one-handed cartwheel a couple of weeks ago. It’s hard enough for some of us to push a cartwheel … (No offense, of course.)
DPK:
I’m doing a theme here.
To paraphrase Rod Stewart: The ad-libbed lines were well-rehearsed.
IWWTHM,
Are you coming to lunch today?
SJ-Macro, got you message.
ST: are we going to see you?
Happy Aloha Friday, all!
A-House,
The games for our 14U team has been at area Middle schools, very nice facilities. The 16U team played at area High Schools, also very nice, the high schools we’ve seen are all designed identically. So far every gym has been air-conditioned. Later, gotta get the team fed.
Go Boom!
I think I saw Cocobean yesterday.
It was one of those magical moments when our eyes met and it was like … I know you from somewhere. Think, Tsai, think.
Then again, I’m absolutely, positively sure I saw James Harden in the Cosmo elevator on Monday. He was carrying red bags. The Rockets’ color is red. He had adidas shoes. The Rockets wear adidas. Oh, and he had that long beard. I said: “You’re …” He nodded, smiled and left. Another magical moment. Maybe.
When you buy a new car you drive it like you stole it. There’s no engine break-in time for racing cars. They drive it like it’s a…racing car.
Key is to change oil after first 500-1000 miles to get out the residual metal shavings, so I heard.
Another key is BMI, get big difference between size of flab vs. size of muscle.
Mahalo ST!
Woohoo, I just did a roundoff hearing the DE update!
Slugger:
I don’t think I’ll be able to make it.
I’m so sorry.
But I’ve got to finish my stories this afternoon.
I’ll try to draw the curtains so A-House can’t admire my 25-centimeter biceps.
Jimmy:
I actually just had a BMI as part of my physical.
After reading the results, they thought my name was Haagen Dazs.
At least they didn’t think your name was Moby.
Any clues on how this DE is?
who*
A three-legged cowboy dog limps into a bar and says, “I’m looking for the man what shot my paw”
48.
Oh no ST! Tropical Storm Flossie will be here about that time.

graham, the name was written above.
Lord a mighty, jimmy! That was the funniest joke I’ve read in for ever! You are absolutely killin’ me! π thanks – feelin’ cheddy today with a week long cold, but you’ve brightened my day a lot.
Graham: Naim Mustafaa, an early admit to OK State.
ST,
I understand now.
Make that two jokes, jimmy, that rooster one was the killer tho. π
ST: how do you push a cartwheel? Or do you mean pushing a cart wheel?
Da Punchbowl Kid (upper case p), thanks. We need more genuine smiles and laughs in our life.
On the other hand, I probably pissed of the puerile Mr. Chicken G.
trying again…happy birthday tsaiko ohana, warrior beat, and the lovely leila!
happy anniversary wena and steohen…31 years is awesome by today’s standards.
could never finish this post yesterday.
Not sure how the 80s bows fared in terms of arm sizes, but Ana Tuiasosopo had guns, the freakish thing was that they were almost all triceps. On the recent news around PED, back in the day, at least when I was around, there were no testing, but without casting aspersions, man there was some straight out hercules strong dudes. I remember watching Niko, doing sitting down military press at 235, not once, but a whole set. Then again, poly boys are some strong mofos.
I read every Bobbsey Twins book.
There was Bert, Nan, Freddie and Flossie.
I always wondered what happened to Flossie.
boola –
And all of us from that era also remember the story about the time Niko was doing power cleans on an olympic bar – and pulled upward with so much torque that he broke the bar…
You read all 72 books?
Congrats to the growing Chow clan!
Happy Aloha Friday, ka kou!
“Trojans looking forward to season opener at UH” (SA breaking news, updated)
With just 70 scholarship players this season due to NCAA sanctions, USC football coach Lane Kiffin said the Trojans will need to get the most out of what they have beginning with the season opener against Hawaii.
“We’ve got to maximize every player on our roster and how they can contribute to help us win and get ready to beat Hawaii,” Kiffin said today at the Pac-12 Football Media Day in Culver City, Calif.
UH plays the Trojans Aug. 29 at Aloha Stadium. The NCAA maximum on scholarships is 85.
The Trojans, ranked No. 1 to start the 2012 season, finished a disappointing 7-6.
DE has some great NFL bloodline. Wasn’t the father with the Vikings.
Mazel Tov to the Chow ohana. I guess that baby outfit I bought for the baby better get in the hubs suitcase. Now gotta get little Atticus his big brother present to. Another blessing to the Warrior ohana.
What’s my “Naim!” Pretty impressive if we can get him.
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/814941/naim-mustaffa
Boolakanaka: is it Boola Kanaka or Boo-laka-naka? Things that make me say “hmmmm?”
………..oh, and Let’s Go Bows!
What ever happened to the Bow-Zos? Student section should resurrect that at the Stanley.
http://youtu.be/caIQ_sy27as
Visiting DE wants an education, as well as playing in the NFL. Although he was referring to his previous college, it shows that he is also considering his future after NFL.
βNot just that. But they have my major in Business. Iβm going to try to open a sports bar one day. Theyβve got a great hotel and restaurant industry program, and I will be learning about how to run a business.β
Smart kid, choosing Hawaii. Get to live in Hawaii, get on the football field, then go to the NFL, then open a sports bar later with a Business degree. Need more kids like that to figure it all out.
Mr.Blog Host. Sorry it wasn’t me. I’m a 62 year old asian with thinning gray hair. 5’5″ about 20lbs overweight for my height. We’ve never met in person. I’ve always admired you from afar at various UH sports venues.
BTW. Can you think of any Radford High School football players that played for UH around 1981-85? (this one’s for you boolaK)
UH has a good Travel Industry Management degree. How about that. . . our academic programs are assisting in attracting top football prospects.
Two guys come to mind: Brian Norwood and Ken Niumatalolo.
Oh, duh jack and Marty Sims.
ST, on a different note, I noticed that Benny Fonua was not on the 2-deep at SOLB (in the Media Guide). Is he hurt?
UH’s Travel Industry & Management is ranked 3rd nationally. There’s a few good things going on in Manoa.
Boolakanaka.
I said I wouldn’t guess anymore what number jersey your wore for UH. But are you one of the Sims? From the clues you gave I gathered you played for Radford…yes…no?
Nope….what wants to be a ram? Much respect to Velasco!
Auwe, Richard Spellman and Tavita Sagspolu was there for a quick cup of coffee .
http://www.montereyherald.com/sports/ci_23727995/hawaiis-anchor-monterey-alum-michael-milovale-proves-be
Ahhhhh….Gaylord Kuamoo actually transferred to Radford.
Boolakanaka.
During the 80’s I ilke many fans thought UH’s colors should have been black and blue to signify the bruises Hawaii’s D would put on EVERY that came into our house. The O would get in their licks also.
You played during an era when physicality was the teams’s hallmark.
this may be from yesterday, my bad, but i am curious as to how eligibility-wise willis wilson can play for us in 2013 if he played for washington last season in 2012 and played in a game? did he graduate from there? just wondering
williamson, he’s joining UH as a walk-on, therefore he can play.
thanks jimmy – looks like i figured it out. according to the NCAA rules, i don’t know that you can play in an actual game for one school one season and then another the next in the same NCAA Division, even if you are a walk-on(unless you graduated, or left before the 9th day of classes or something). the Washington u website says he played in 1 game in september 2012, but I think it’s a mistake, because other websites say he was kicked off the team in august 2012 (before the season), which would explain why he can come here and play without sitting out a year(technically 2012 he didn’t play).
Re: Bobbsey Twins.
Don’t know how many books there were, but I read the entire series.
I think the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew came out of the same publishing company. Those series have been re-released, but you can’t get the Bobbsey Twins anymore.
According to a previous blog, Wilson had 1 carry for Washington last season.
Yep, walk-on to walk-on can play immediately. Charles Clay did. (Clay, by the way, is now on scholarship.)
Clay’s mom is a blog reader, so say nice things about him β or she’ll hurt you.
Wasn’t Wilson a walk on at UDub, not on scholarship. That’s the reason he can walk on and play at UH this season.
109–ahhh we got a detective in the house! And I was just playing about the Rams…they had some really loaded teams especially in the 70s, Wally Ho, Richard Conte, Vernon,Homer Jones, the Salanoas, Arthur Smith….
Clay’s mom, you sure molded an awesome son.
nani desu ka?
James Von Rohr
Geoff McDonald
Happy Bday Tsaikos!
I don’t know why I keep reading DR’s column in the SA. I must be a gluten for punishment. He is so depressing.
114-I assumed that it was a blog for a Kikada reunion…..
Boola – don’t forget Verner AhChing, the Punahou transfer who helped power the Ram’s running game, alongside Wally Ho.
Alo Faleafine…
Okay, what local high school did we (let’s speculate if we don’t have facts) the most on field players (all local choosing to stay home were productive, even if they only saw a little if any actual time “under the lights”)?
Would that be Farrington?
119—damn that was the name I was searching for…..damn! Great call! If I recall correctly, he averaged an unheard of 14 yards a carry–which is just not of this earth. Prior to his transfer he was in the same backfield with Mosi…(which also reminds me to give props to the other great ILH running back of that time Ed Kini). With that, Verna died several years ago, maybe 2009.
122–Hmmn, I want to say Waianae or Kahuku,….
I was thinking Waianae, too. I did not think Kahuku as up until recently many of their players were either, BYU, Utah or Colorado bound.
I ask because there seemed to be a lot from Radford.
Boolakanaka & DPK: is Wally Ho the same as “Timmy” Ho?
I don’t think so…I know the Ho family, (brothers wally and nathan) they owned a service station on Kamehameha Highway, and lived above it…But, to be clear, Timmy Ho as in the younger brother of Reggie Ho, of Notre Dame (who I have always despised) fame and national championship glory?
Just joining the multiple personality club.
Best Regards,
3-Prong. hehe
Boolakanaka: Thats him then. Dad of the same name owned the station. Timmy was Wallys nickname. Motorcycle accident right?
Das da one….His younger brother, Nathan, I think got an MBA from Columbia if I am not mistaken. Smart guy, obviously, but a little overkill for a family run service station….
Learn how donations and membership dues support the Rainbow Warrior football team.
http://www.nakoa.org/2013/07/how-are-my-donations-being-used/
seems like we can be competive this year against USC in the same way we did the last time they came to aloha stadium. bryant moniz and kealoha pilares had incredible games against the trojans that year, including a hookup on a TD screen pass, with pilares displaying his NFL class speed on that particular play.
Wow . . . lolos on parade.
@wafan… π
No kidding wafan!!!
@Na Koa Mike…I’m going to put it out there and just ask…Na Koa does do lots of things for the football team. Do you also have why your admin cost are, travel, and other non related expenses direct for the football team? I’m asking as lots of folks want to know but do not want to put it out there. I rather be straight and just ask. That has prevented some in the last couple of years from donating way less money then in the past. Also, I would love to chat with you sometime. Like expenses on the road games, ect. I have lots of questions just with the USC game last year? Don Weir, and Tom Mui have my direct email address if this is not the right venue to answer. Mahalo Nui Mike!
i’ll have my eggs over easy with fried rice and english muffins extra butter.
don’t forfet the ketchup and mayonnaise for my spam.
At one time UH was able to field an entire O-line made up of Crusaders.
Sure miss T-bone’s guitar work
